Donna Smallin Kuper

In this episode we meet Donna Smallin Kuper, a leading organizing and cleaning expert. The interview is much less about organization tips and tactics and more about Donna’s story, how she got started and her mindset.

Donna’s career as an organizer started when a publisher asked her to write a book on the subject – in 8 weeks! Those 8 weeks and the resulting book changed the course of her life and career.

Since then, Donna has continued to write and has authored 13 books – with more on the way. Her books have also led to several gigs as a spokesperson for various well-known companies. Most recently, Donna has followed her own de-cluttering advice when she and her husband sold their home and most of their possessions to travel and live in their RV.

This is a very special episode of the Networker For Business Women Podcast.  There’s nothing explicit in the content but because of the sensitive nature, you may want to listen to it first before you allow your children to hear it.

Amber is an online friend that I met through Twitter.  I spent a fair bit of time checking out her website and realized that her story is one that needs to be told again and again.

In fact, in many ways, her story is “our” story.  Who among us hasn’t had a day, a week, a season of life where we have asked ourselves “why me?”  But Amber, more than most, had every right to ask that question.  After a brutal attack at the age of 15 Amber could have become bitter and hardened.  Instead, Amber chose a different life for herself.  Through her faith, she chose to become “The Warrior”, “The Chosen” and not “The Victim.”

I believe that we all struggle with questions on why bad things happen to good people.  I don’t have the answers.  Through her experience and guidance from her youth pastor Amber was able to find enlightenment, purpose and peace through The Book of Job.

In case you are wondering I am Catholic, which, of course, means that I am a Christian too.  However, this podcast, this effort, this website has no religious affiliation per se.  This is a BUSINESS podcast and as such, everyone from any faith, or no faith, is welcome.  So take this episode in any way that is palatable to you.  If you share Amber’s faith, wonderful.  If you don’t, then take it as a philosophical discussion.

If you listen to this episode you’ll catch a glimpse of an interesting theory: The “Why”  is because we are all intertwined – across space and time and part of the overall plan.  The “Why” is because somehow we advance and serve one another through suffering.

I don’t know why bad things happen.  But I do know that now that I have discovered Amber, it is my duty as a fellow human to share her story with others so that they too can move bravely from Victim to Warrior.

So far, so good, but I must admit, this will take getting used to.

Anna Haupt – Hövding Founder

I don’t really know how I ended up watching a video on Hövding – “the invisible helmet” but the link that I saw on some social media site really drew me in.  The video showed two women riding their bikes.  One obviously had a helmet on.  The other, the video said, had an invisible helmet.

I looked and looked…”Perhaps the helmet is translucent,” I thought.  But no, the woman’s hair was waving in the wind.   I just couldn’t figure it out…the video kept teasing and implying.  Finally at almost at the very end, the secret was revealed.

It’s a fantastic video…you must…YOU MUST watch it…seriously.

Watch it and be amazed at how the story unfolds.  Watch it and you’ll appreciate the creativity of the two founders, Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin.  Watch it and prepare to be inspired to change the world in your own special way too!

In this episode of the Networker for Business Women podcast I interviewed Anna Haupt.  I’ve listened to the interview several times and each time I take away more – more business lessons and life lessons.  Mostly, I have to tell you that Anna is very gracious and down-to-earth.  She went out of her way for this interview for all of us and I couldn’t appreciate that more.  She also speaks perfect English.  I apologized to her for not speaking her language, Swedish, but she was just so understanding.

I can’t wait for you to listen to the interview and hear the passion in her voice as she talks about having to develop her own confidence – that one of the best part of the whole interview.  But kudos goes to her “very German and very harsh” professor (her words not mine) who made her and Terese realize that what they had developed was a million dollar idea.  As you’ll hear, it’s more of a billion or trillion dollar idea with multiple applications – this is just the beginning.  You’ll also hear her talk about the resistance that she and Terese experienced simply because they are women working in technology.   Sure, Anna and Terese were angry about that but they channeled their frustrations into proving that they were right and that their vision could become real.

I can’t believe I found her and had the opportunity to interview her!  What a find for us – Suzanne Wells, The Ebay Coach.  In this episode Suzanne talks about how her career selling online started after her divorce and job loss.  She needed to make some money fast and started selling on eBay.  In that first month, she made $1,500 and in just a few short months later started making more money selling online than she made at her previous job.

Do you really want to be the “cheap” brand?   I don’t.  In this episode Isabel explains why and how she has positioned herself as  a “Luxury Photographer!”

Take Away Points

1.  You can’t discount yourself rich.  There is always someone willing to offer a lower price.  Your only choice is to offer something different or better.  When Isabel concentrated on offering over-the-top service her business started to grow exponentially.

2.  The little extras mean an awful lot.  All of the extras that she does to keep in touch with clients is part of what keeps clients coming back.  This extra effort helps to bring in the referrals.

3.  The book I mentioned that Isabel told me about has really helped me to get a better understanding of Isabel’s process.  Worth Every Penny talks about how to build a “boutique” style business.  I am in the process of reading this book and I am loving it.  The books is written for photographers but don’t overlook it if you are not a photographer…it pertains to all of us!  The mindset and  the structure are pricessless.

4.  Her clients are happier now that they are paying more.  That sounds surprising, but is it?  She’s delivering much more now than she ever could have before.  Also, because she is targeting clients that don’t necessarily want the lowest price, her clients are never disappointed.  You see, there is always someone cheaper.

5.  Isabel is not afraid to walk away from clients that aren’t a good fit for her firm.  Every time I get “that feeling” about a client and don’t walk away I regret it.  How about you?  “No” is a difficult word for many…it is for me.  I’m learning to love “no” though.

6.  I love that Isabel looked for mentors in her industry and invested in her professional growth.  Who in your industry can you consult with?  As Isabel pointed out, be prepared to pay for the consulting and guidance that you need.

I’m not sure if this is a business tip, information, a prediction of the future, or what?  So perhaps we should just call it a “Lourdes told you so.”  The publishing industry is changing.  Forget that, it has changed and this is just the beginning.  There will be many opportunities forthcoming for you to build a new business and/or promote your current business.

Dafna Michaelson Jenet

Do you need to feel good about people and life again?  If so, this episode is for you!  I interviewed Dafna Michaelson Jenet co-founder, president and JourneyWoman for the 50 in 52 Journey.  The purpose of her Journey was simple: visit all 50 states in the USA in a year and interview the heroes that are making a difference in their community.

Dafna really gave herself over to this calling.  She quit her job and took on this effort in spite of being a single mother.  She cashed out her 401K to help fund the effort and her then boyfriend (now husband) even took money out of his own savings to complete the project.

The 50 in 52 Journey still continues to receive media attention.  Most notably, her story was picked up by CBS Sunday Morning – you can see the video embedded here below.

Amy Darigol – LuvCherie Jewelry

In this episode, I interviewed Amy Darigol, Owner and Founder of LuvCherie Jewelry.   I learned a lot from Amy!  She started and has grown her business in spite of suffering from Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.  She is growing it both online and offline and is already receiving significant attention from her community and the media for her work.

She talks about her experience with Etsy and well as her experience overall in growing her business.  She is proof positive that you can turn your passions into a thriving business.  Prepare to be really inspired!

Take Away Points

1.  Her about page on her website is something that we all need to look at.  Her video is very compelling and useful to building a brand.  We should ALL being doing video to build our personal and corporate brands.  You can find her website here and her about page here.

2.  She didn’t give up.  Her first sale took a little while, 3 months.

3.  She’s serving a niche.  She discovered something that is a true in all marketing, the smaller the niche, the easier the sale.  Her first piece that sold was an item that is “inspired by” shows, books, and characters that she really loves.  So she is definitely serving a niche – – individuals who love what she loves and want to wear jewelry.

4.  Amy talked about the importance of great photography on Etsy.   I love how she is learning to do better photography but has also bartered with an excellent photographer to help her.  You can find her photographer Richard Doyle, on Facebook here.  For new business owners especially, barter may make sense!  Remember to consult your CPA on how bartering could affect your taxes.

5.  Amy talked about Etsy in depth.  If you are selling on Etsy or thinking about selling on Etsy, then this episode is a must listen for you.  She talks about fees, sales tax, setting up your store, promotion and more!

6.  She’s selling both online as well as offline.  She has found that her online and offline efforts build on each other to build her brand.  She has realized that meeting with her community in person gives her immediate feedback on her work.

7.  She is networking with people that she would  have absolutely no other way to meet online through Twitter.  If you have a brand that could benefit especially from national or international recognition, you must be on Twitter.  But as you listen in, you’ll pick up on her understanding of critical social media etiquette – – it’s not about blatant selling, but instead about building a relationship.

I’m a big fan of using VA’s because I think it makes for a happier and more productive team.  It’s also a very affordable and efficient way of getting the help you need.  With a VA you can also leverage time and keep your company projects moving forward, even while you sleep!

Take Away Points:

1.  Suzie has clients everywhere.   Technology has increased her potential client base infinitely as she can work for clients all over the world.  Just think, you too can have a complete collaborative team working remotely for you.  Suzie shows us how working in different time zones is not a hinderance.  Instead, working across different time zones has helped her to serve her clients better through time leveraging.

2.  Suzie’s VA Business is a “lifestyle” business.  After going through the life-changing experience of caring for her mother and sister as they battled breast cancer, Suzie searched for an alternate way of working where she could help people and live on her own terms.  She took what she was good at and figured out how to do it “virtually.”  With her Internet hotspot she’s set up for business everywhere.

3.  I found it rather intriguing that Suzie  went 100% virtual after getting on Twitter.  She networks “online.”  The nature of networking has changed to expand to online efforts.  I talk about this all of the time.  It is important to meet face-to-face.  Nothing takes the place of meeting and networking in-person, but it is time to expand your horizons to meet people everywhere through social networking.  You can also bolster those local relationships through online networking.

4.  I loved Suzie’s calendar tip – – she has helped her clients take advantage of a cloud-based calendar even if they love Outlook through the use of gmail and a Google calendar.  She simply has them invite their “gmail” address in order to have online access to their calendar.  Brilliant!

5.  There are some barriers to using a VA.  For example, some people may find it challenging to delegate.  But it’s not easy to delegate to in-house employees either.  You must learn to delegate regardless to be successful in business.

6.  Suzie’s retainer packages are very interesting.  Her clients purchase a number of labor hours rather than a pay a month-to-month fee.  It’s an interesting business model and one that I’m considering for my business.

7.  I love that she does NOT handle accounting for her clients.  I appreciate that she knows her preferences and limitations.  Suzie shows us that it is ok to say “no I don’t do that” and refer the work to another trusted industry partner.

8.  If you are considering a career as a VA, Suzie says to look within yourself: you must keep your mind on organization, time management and self-discipline.

Patricia Ragan Tillman

You know how much I love The Shark Tank and The Apprentice.  In this episode I interviewed Patricia Tillman Ragan who is simulating the Shark Tank and Apprentice experience for her students.  She utilizes pop-culture, television, new media, and innovative instructional  design to prepare her students for jobs, entrepreneurship and a college education.  Wait until you hear what fun her students have!

Patricia is a career and technical education teacher specializing in business in Canastota, New York.  She teaches High School Grades 9 – 12.  Her goal is to get students hired or into the College of their choice.  In short, she is bridging the gap between education and business.  Her work has been recognized by Microsoft and Donald Trump and is supported by CEO mentors around the country as well as in her community.

She has been chosen to go to Barcelona in March of 2014 to represent her country,  the United States of America, with her programs, so that she can educate and learn from other educators all around the world.

Take Away Points

1.  Patricia utilized online and local networking in order to find the CEO’s she needed to make The Shark Tank experience possible.  In the episode she goes through her list of CEO’s from all over the USA but also mentions that her students skyped with Belfast, Ireland as part of the experience.  If you are only networking online or only networking locally, you are missing out.   Your networking efforts need to be balanced and supported by both online and offline means.

2.  I’ve mention it in every episode it seems, this is a small world we are living in today.  What an amazing time we are living in where we can impact and interact with others globally – – any one of us!  Patricia did a great job by recruiting mentors from all over.  However, I admire that she did not ignore  her community resources.  She utilized local CEO’s for the final phase of The Shark Tank experience.   Technology is great, but it is also very valuable to be able to interact well with individuals in person.  I found it interesting that the students found the in-person presentations particularly challenging.  To do well in business today, we must push beyond our comfort zone to be able to communicate our ideas face-to-face.

3.  I was impressed to learn that the  Mentors feel liked they learned more than the mentees.  That is a testament to the program that Patricia put together.  I have heard from individuals who regularly mentor others that it is one of the most rewarding and enriching experiences that they have taken part in.  Perhaps we should all be looking for those opportunities.

4.  Patricia used Skype to connect her students with the CEOs.  The most efficient and inexpensive way to communicate with others all around the globe is through Skype.  It’s easy but also a critical skill in today’s technology driven marketplace.

5.  Speaking of a technology driven market, I love how Patricia refers to her class as a “season” and video-taped her “show.”  I love how she talks about her utilizing social media to “make things go viral.”  I love how she has a YouTube channel.  She has her students interacting with and using all of the online promotional tools that we have available to all of us today.   Just think how far ahead her students are.  We should ALL be taking advantage of all of the technology that is available t us.

6.  One thing that I find so compelling is that she mentioned that both her Principal and Superintendent were behind her efforts 100%.  Patricia’s students are blessed that they are benefiting from an organization where ideas and innovation are supported.  This should challenge all of us to support new ideas in our own firms.

I am going to be your new favorite person with this week’s tip!  I always knew that I could “send” a document to my Kindle.  However, the document had to be a pdf and I had to email it to the special address and cross my fingers that it actually showed up there.  No more!  Now you can send a document of any kind to your Kindle just as easily as you could print it with these apps available for your PC or Mac.  You can even highlight text on a website and send that to your kindle.  But wait there’s more!!!  There’s a Chrome Extension for those of us rebels that loathe Internet Explorer and opt for the much more sophisticated of browers – Chrome!

Don’t have a Kindle you say?  No problem! All you need is a tablet or smart phone and use can download a Free Kindle Reading App and use that as a reader!

I use a Kindle reading device and an app for my iPad (yes I am a geek).  I love my Kindle because it is so easy on my eyesight that is always strained from hours of sitting in front of my computer.  There are several Kindle choices but I chose the least expensive option not so much because of the price but because the screen is perfect for hours of reading.  This device is not backlit and that is much more restful for my eyesight.  Yes there are “ads” but they are only there when the device is first turned on, the ads are not viewable when you are reading at all.   If you click below (affiliate) you’ll see full details on the one that I have.

Business Tip of the Week

BufferApp is a resource that you can use to schedule your social media posting.   You can “buffer” your posts that you don’t always have to be online to submit your status updates.  I’ve been using their paid service for a very long time now and love it.  I do not have any sort of affiliate relationship with them, so use them if you want to or not, doesn’t matter to me.

I do have a few cautions for you.  Please remember that social media is “social.”  So this tool should be used ONLY as a crutch to help you to post.  You still need to be genuine and interact personally.  The purpose of social media is networking and engagement, so make sure to still log into your accounts directly and engage with your community online, otherwise, your missing the boat.

In this episode I interview Vanessa Hayes of the Simple Life Together Podcast and of GetSimplifized.com.  This was a very powerful episode for me and I hope for you too as we learn as much about mindset for living “our best life” as we learn techniques and strategies for organization and simplification.

I love the Simple Life Together Podcast and know that you will too.  She co-hosts the podcast with her husband Dan and I love how they interact with one another and give each other room to shine on their show.  They set a great example of a wonderful marriage and partnership.  But even more than that, I come away from each episode with valuable tips and techniques to help me to keep focusing on what is important in my life.

In this episode I discuss my big “aha” moment.  I was  coincidentally,  reading The War of Art during the time that I was putting together this episode and realized that my tendencies to over-commit are simply symptoms of resistance towards doing that which means so much to me.

1.  Vanessa talked about getting the most interest in her GetSimplized business from YouTube.  Interesting don’t you think?  We’ll be covering YouTube in depth later (hint hint).

2.  Clutter can be physical and emotional.  Vanessa talks a lot about editing things and commitments out of our lives.

3.  If you have difficulty saying “no” then ask yourself why you feel compelled to say “yes.”

4.  Be deliberate in where you invest your time.

5.  Consider the cost of being a “slave to your possessions.”

6.  When organizing a space (like a closet), don’t just go out and buy containers as a first step.  Instead, get a good vision of what you want the space to look and feel like and “edit” first.  If you don’t love it, don’t use it, don’t need it, it’s gone.

I found the coolest FREE resource where you can test your Facebook cover image and profile picture.  I didn’t design my cover image on this tool because we have more sophisticated tools in our business.  I own Welhaven and Associates a marketing firm and we do graphic design in house.  But, I have used this tool to test the look of the images before uploading them “live” to Facebook.

Dixie “Dynamite: Gillaspie lives up to her nickname in this episode as she helps us to blast through the brick walls of “I can’t.”

Take Away Points

You’ll be challenged in this episode by her message of conquering the 4 main types of brick walls that she has encountered when coaching clients to over come their obstacles.  Specifically:

The Brick Wall of Style – Just because you feel like you “can’t” do it like you’ve been taught or like someone else (because it’s not just you) doesn’t mean you can’t do something.   Embrace your style and your abilities and sensibilities.

The Brick Wall of Circumstances -If you think you are not “something enough”, that is probably not a big enough issue as you think it is.  So if you aren’t old enough, tall enough, skinny enough, young enough, pretty enough, whatever, that is not an excuse.  As Dixie tells us, circumstances change or are unimportant anyway.

The Brick Wall of Consequences – Sometimes we avoid doing things because of the perceived consequences.  Everything that “could” happen is not inevitable.   Instead, Dixie shares with us that we should  assess the risk factors and our risk tolerance.  An easy way to determine whether or not you should move forward is to determine the worst-case-scenario and determine whether those consequences are worth it.

The Brick Wall of Design –  If your vision doesn’t exactly match the final outcome perfectly it can be stressful.  Goals will change along the way or the manner in which you reach is goal may be different than you anticipated but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Dixie shared with us that if  find ourselves saying “I can’t” a lot around a particular situation it may be because we don’t want to do something.

The first step in breaking through your brick walls is determining what you want to accomplish.  Finish this sentence…

“What I really want to do is….”

Dixie also spent time in the interview telling us about some of her strongest and most profound brick walls that she broke through.  Her story is touching and uplifting all at the same time.  We all have barriers.  No one’s life is perfect, and Dixie shares so much personal stuff, in order to help us.  Thank you, Dixie!

We’re all looking for ways to be more productive aren’t we?  Jane Garee posted on Facebook recently about how much more productive she seems to be when she is working in her local coffee shop.  And guess what, she’s right!  May of us are and now there’s research to prove it plus a free online app to simulate the hustle and bustle of a coffee shop.

5.  Andrew and Sarah didn’t just carefully plan and execute the writing and production of the book, but they strategized, expertly I might add, on the marketing of the book.  They reached out and paid homage to notable geeks on their books.  This got their books noticed, blogged about and sold.  She suggests doing the research on bloggers, podcasters and journalists in your niche and making sure to create something that they would WANT to promote.  By planning the marketing of their product before and during the writing process., they were assured the best chance that their book would get publicity and sales.

6.  Sarah and Andrew used the 80%/20% principle to move their business away from providing one-on-one service for clients to creating products for sale.  If we all concentrate our efforts on our best clients, we are sure to be happier, healthier and more successful.

7.  Sarah shared the many opportunities that have come as a result of stepping out and following through on their idea.  How many ideas have we all had that we don’t follow through with?  It’s time for all of us to start following through on our ideas, just like Sarah and Andrew did.

8.  I love how Sarah and Andrew work to their own strengths and really compliment each other in their many businesses.

9.  Sarah and Andrew are utilizing Kickstarter in order to promote and fund the production of the next 2 books in the series and an associated app.  You can be part of the project, just contribute to the campaign before the deadline of June 25, 2013.  Check out their campaign and be a part of the project!   But Sarah and Andrew don’t just depend on the organic traffic generated by Kickstarter itself create a successful Kickstarter Campaign.  Instead they continue to reach out to influential bloggers and podcasters to promote the effort.

11.  Sarah and Andrew have a separate area on their website where the media can download pictures, press releases files without having to ask for it.  This encourages a journalist on deadline to choose their story, over someone else’s because it’s just done!

If you love talk radio but are frustrate that shows are always on podcasts then you can use Dar.fm to record shows much like a DVR (or VCR) would record a television show.  You can try out their basic service for free but I subscribe to their paid service and it’s great.   I do not have an affiliate relationship with Dar.fm, I just really love the service.

Here is the outline that goes along with this episode

1.  Have an agenda- Have a pre-planned idea of who you are targetting and why.

2.  Identify the following individuals

• The “Obvious” – People who clearly and personally need your product or service.
• The Potential “Partners”  Those individuals who serve the same or similar market.  You have a clear potential to refer business back and forth to one another.
• The Influencer – Those well connected people that will help you because they can.  Keep in mind that:
  • The Influencers in a group might not be the really likeable, funny or charismatic ones.  Being fun is not enough to be considered influential.
  • Influencers seem to hold others attention
  • Influencers work hard to truly connect people
  • Influencers are involved in the community.  That “community” can be an online or offline community.
  • Influencers understand the value of social media and they have an adequate following on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and hte like.
  • Influencers promote others more than they promote themselves.
  • Influencers might have fun but are also “appropriate” especially online.

3.  Connect

• Try to have a memorable conversation at the networking event.
• Be “normal.’  Be yourself.
• Listen to what your target individuals have to say in their introductions.

4.  Follow Up

• Via email – DON’T SPAM!
• Written thank you notes
• Social Media
• Newsletter – DON’T SPAM!

5.  Meet with those individuals OUTSIDE of the networking venue

• Be up front about why you want to meet
• Don’t make it sound like a date
• Meet in an office or a public place
• Meeting can include a simple coffee, a phone call or skype!

In this episode I interviewed Jane Garee.  Jane is a sales trainer.  She’s really fun and funny but also VERY knowledgeable.  She was a very successful sales professional, manager and trainer in the corporate world for years before she decided to launch her own sales training firm.

Her story is compelling.  She gets really honest with us as she details the struggles that she had in “selling herself.”  I know that these are similar struggles that business owners often have in selling their products and services too.

If you take the survey (linked above) you’ll note that the survey is actually hosted by a third-party service titled Survey Monkey.

Feedback is so important in business and the possibilities are endless.   They have free and paid packages but the free one is great for most small business needs.  The only drawback is that the free version restricts you to 100 responses per survey.  That may sound like a lot but it goes fast and doesn’t truly allow for a scientific sampling.  But it’s enough to get you what you need on a small scale for most businesses.  It’s certainly enough to try out the service and see if you like it.

Information is EVERYTHING in business and even with just the free version you could poll your employees for feedback. or get feedback on your services from your clients.

Survey Monkey offers some pretty sophisticated market research services too where you could run some product testing and the like.  You are limited only by your imagination.

Why survey?  Because you want to give your market what it wants as efficiently as possible.

3.    The iPad is a very useful tool for photography!  Just check out some of  the photographs that Autumn took of her pieces.  Of course, she does great editing work too!

4.    You don’t want to make friends with everyone.  You want everyone to respect you.  Sometimes you have to say “no” and that might not win you friends and that is ok.

5.  Follow your “warm fuzzies.”

6.  Don’t be afraid of failing.   We can learn so much about being successful from Autumn’s attitude about “failing.”  Sometimes the most valuable lessons are learning what NOT to do.

Business Tip of the Week

One of the biggest mistakes we can make in business (or in life) is assuming that other people’s behaviors are in all about us.    Has this ever happened to you:?  I have certainly struggled with this.

One of the books that I read often, at least once per month is  The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book) .

If you want true freedom from struggling with your own expectations and pleasing others, this book is for you.  Seriously.  When I have a bad day, I read this book, at least parts of it, and it reminds me, that “it’s not all about me” and that gives me comfort.

I don’t believe that there is any way to truly succeed in business or life if we are not putting the Agreements into place in our everyday living.

I interviewed Sharon Cowan in this episode.  Sharon is all business and we have a lot that we can learn from her.  She purchased a small local cleaning company in order to grow it and position it for sale.  The company had 4 employees when she purchased it and she grew it to over 120 employees serving 4 counties.

Have you ever wanted to be “paperless’ but found that trying to run your office without paper actually generated more paper?   The paper monster in my office reached a critical high and I searched and searched for a paperless solution.  Sure there’s lots of scanners out there but I wanted something more.  What good is scanning something if you can’t organize it and find it again when you need it?  After a lot of research I settled on Neat Receipts and I’m so glad that I did.

Here’s what I love about Neat:

Nea Receipts is more than just a scanner, it’s a system that comes with very powerful software that recognizes the writing on the scanned documents.  This allows you to scan for a document based on just about anything that you can remember.  One of my biggest fears in going “paperless” was not being able to find my documents after they had been scanned.  Neat makes finding documents even easier than in a physical file because you can search by whatever word or string of words you can remember.

Pamela discussed publishing as an indie author through Amazon via Create Space an Amazon company.  I’ve covered Create Space before because I so believe in what Amazon is doing.  It’s revolutionary.  You can do as much or as little of the actual book preparation and production process yourself and/or hire Amazon’s editors and designers to help you.  (You can even hire Welhaven and Associates – hint hint to design the book cover for you…but I digress).

Pam also promoted her book on Kickstarter.com before it was published.  You must check out Kickstarter.com  It’s not just a way of getting funding for a project, it is a way of getting early PR for a project in process.  You should also check out IndieGoGo.com.  It’s similar to Kickstarter.com and I’ve heard from friends that IndieGoGo.com is a bit more flexible on the type of projects that they allow on their website.  I’ve not used either, so please decide for yourself.  But either way, crowd funding is an amazing way to fund a project, test a market, and get the pr machine rolling.

Question of the week:  What “hobbies” do you have that you wonder if you can make money from?

In this week’s episode I interview Bette Lee Crosby.  Bette is a very successful Indie Author.  Bette writes books specifically to appeal to women – which is reason enough to have her on this show, but I also interviewed her because she is very savvy about the business of writing.

In the interview Bette talked about her books as well as the publishing industry today.

I am very fascinated with the Publishing industry from a marketing point of view.  One of the most important things that  we can do to establish our credibility in the market place is to publish a non-fiction book in our genre.   I am fascinated by authors and, in particular, Indie Authors who are incredibly successful in the market place.

Bette defines an Indie Author as an author who is  independently published or published by a smaller press.  She explains that being an Indie Author means that you’ll spend time taking care of all of the details that Publishing Houses used to take care of for their authors in promoting their books.  However, you’ll keep more of the profits and you’ll have full control over the cover design, your editor, pricing etc.

Bette did give us some pointers if you want to be an author:

1.  IF you want to be an author, go fot it!  You don’t ever know until you try.

2.  Read, read, read!  You’ll learn a lot about writing by reading.

3.  Even before you start writing, think your story through.

4.  Writers write, just start putting something on paper and make a goal to write every single day.

5.  Look for a writer’s group in your local area.  Your participation in such a group can help you to learn and gain confidence.  You’ll even learn by sharing and critiquing others!

Business Tip of the Week

My business tip of the week is probably as much for me as it is for you and it’s “Pay yourself first.”  I’m not talking about just putting away money for savings.  I’m talking about putting yourself, your physical and mental well-being, your goals, your happiness first.

There will always be another load of laundry to do.  There will always be another client to serve or another project the boss needs.  There will always be demands that others will put on your time.  So often as women in business we are left with nothing but a tired body and spirit.  What about what YOU want and need?

 Business Tip of the Week

If you’re like me you are always looking for tools, tips and resources to make your business and personal life more fulfilling and effective.  I’m constantly listening, learning and trying new things.

In order to get more of “the right things” done, try this:  Chunk the project down into 1/2 hours segments of concentrated production time.  Wondering what I mean by “the right things?”  The right activities are those that will make you money and that you’ve been putting off.  Likely you are overwhelmed at the size of the project or fearful of the outcome.  But I have found that those 1/2 concentrated time periods really help to get things done and fast because you know you only have to concentrate for 1/2 hour.

Here are some tips:

1.  Really commit to to taking a break after the 1/2 hour time period.  The break actually helps you to be more productive when you return to this or another project.  But don’t take too long of a break.  Maybe go get  a glass of water or take a walk around the office.  Take enough of a break, about 5 minutes, to clear your head, but not so much that you are breaking more than you are working.  

2.  Eliminate all distractions for that 1/2 hour.  That means, no email, no social media, no phone calls, etc…  Just concentrate all of your attention and intention on the project at hand.  You’ll be amazed at how much you can get done when you do that.  Plus, it is so much less stressful to know that you’ll be able to check email or whatever after the 1/2 hour up.

3.  Try this for a week.  This work method takes getting used to but if you try this I think you’ll find it very useful and your productivity will soar.

I use a simple online timer.  Just click here to see the one that I use.  But you can use any old timer you want.    Go ahead and google online timer, there are thousands.  An egg timer works well too.  Your phone might even have an app.  Anyhow, just use whatever timer you like best.

A really cool website that Anne recommends is Rent the Runway  I’ve not used the service but I did check out the website after Anne recommended it.  This makes so much sense!  Why buy a designer gown to wear once for a fundraiser, wedding, or the like when you can just rent your dream dress for a fraction of the cost?  Brilliant!

In this episode I also announced some some amazing news!  Cliff Ravenscraft, “The Podcast Answer Man,” chose this Podcast as his “Personal Plug of the Week” in Episode 303 of his Podcast Answer Man Show.  Wow!  What an honor!  Cliff has produced thousands of podcast episodes across numerous shows.  He’s trained the best Podcasters, he influences Podcasting, so many people have become aware if Podcasting simply through Cliff.  To be chosen as his “Personal Plug of the Week” is amazing honor for this effort and a surprise  since this show is so young and I am so new to Podcasting.  Thank you Cliff!

Puppy Cake as Seen on Shark Tank

“If you want extraordinary results you have to put in extraordinary effort.”  That is Kelly Costello’s mantra and I do think she has done an amazing job of achieving the extraordinary.

Kelly was featured on Season 3 Episode 4 of Shark Tank.  If you aren’t familiar with Shark Tank you need to get familiar with this show.  The premise is simple, entrepreneurs and inventors present their ideas to famous investors aka  “The Sharks” in order to get funding and connections.  Kelly was actually contacted by the show’s producer and invited to apply to the show.

She didn’t get funded but that didn’t stop her.  She took what others may have seen as a defeat and really listened to The Sharks‘ advice to grow her business.   We can all learn from that advice too.  Listen in as I bring to you, Kelly Costello, owner and founder of PuppyCake.

Her tips on ensuring a great headshot include:
1.  Making sure that you “connect” with the photographer.  A photographer is an artist that can represent you better if you and they “like” one another.
2.  Communicate with the photographer on the use and desired outcome of the photo.  This will help them to make recommendations.
3.  Dress appropriately for your industry.
4.  Communicate with the photographer on possibly engaging a make-up artist and hair stylist.
5.  Some of the best photos are NOT staged but taken in someone’s place of business or in the course of doing their work.  A headshot does not need to be the classic headshot.
6.  Your headshots should be updated at least yearly or if you have changed your hairstyle or changed your appearance in some significant way.

To the left here is a picture that she took of my “furry child” Bella.  Wendy was very, very patient because Bella just loves Wendy and Bella is very wiggly.  Bella kept trying to kiss Wendy!  I was very impressed that Wendy took the time to meet Bella a week before the photo shoot in order to make sure that Bella was comfortable with her and so that Wendy could get a feel for how she was going to capture Bella’s personality.  Wendy is a true professional!  After the shoot, Wendy was very timely with her proofs and my prints and she even packaged them all up really cute.  She over-delivered with her exacting standards.  I can’t recommend her enough.
