Milestones: My Daughter's Early Learning, Part 2

For the next few months, I will be repeating my 'Milestones' series from 2013. I will begin with Part 2 to, once again, give new parents ideas about how to play with your 1 year old as well as the toys that I introduced. Shapes and Blocks

Once my daughter was 11 months old and ready to start crawling, I knew, with that, would come the need for more intense exploration. I knew she would want to explore new types of toys and objects. So, I decided that it would be best for her to start playing with different shapes, so that she could spend some time learning about what those shapes are; and what they looked like up close.

I began by purchasing the Hape Eco-Toys Animal Blocks set by Hape Toys. She spent almost her entire 11th month playing with her new blocks and enjoying her older toys as well. She seemed to really like the triangle shape the most and the brightly colored blocks (neon green and yellow mostly). Once she turned 1 year old (12 months), I decided that she needed to explore other shapes. She was excited to play with some of her birthday gifts which included the Edushape Sensory Balance Toy and the Melissa & Doug Chunky Puzzle of Safari Animals. So, we opened these gifts together and had fun playing with these new toys.

My daughter really liked the circular shapes the most. They came in blue, hot pink and yellow. She really loved the feel of these shapes since they were soft and easy to handle. I brought them with us wherever we went. She was always entertained and happy with this toy.

I also decided to arrange the blocks in sets of three where one block was in a different color. In the picture below is a typical arrangement that I put together for her. I noticed that she would study the blocks when she saw them in this arrangement.

Next on the list was the Melissa & Doug Chunky Puzzle of Safari Animals. She loved the animal shapes and would hold on to her favorite ones the most. She was not ready to place the animals back in the puzzle, but I figured that this would come with time. In the meantime, she could have fun enjoying the safari animal puzzle pieces!

After about 2 weeks with her new toys, I decided that I would need to play with her differently, because just having her sit and play with her toys was not going to be enough to entertain her.

After my daughter's 1st birthday, I noticed that she liked playing with my summer sandals. I decided to let her play with two pairs while I watched. She really enjoyed playing with the sandals, and eventually, as you can see in this video below, she sorts the sandals by type. I am in the background saying the word "shoe" or "shoes" depending on whether she was holding one shoe in one hand or if she was holding a shoe in each hand. In this way, we made a little game out of matching the sandals together.

I love this early video because she very happily sorts the sandals and is into her play time. Also, it gave me a chance to observe her learning process and enjoy the fact that she was having fun with my old sandals!

I hope the video was helpful to those trying to help their babies explore the big world around them, while having fun with their baby (without stressing them out before they have had a chance to become who they are supposed to be in life).

This series will continue over the next few months and I hope that new moms (and dads!) will have fun enjoying the videos, pictures, ideas and activities that I created for my daughter. In some cases, I created activities by accident while playing another type of game with her. By creating these activities, my time spent with my 11 - 18 month old daughter was enjoyable, happy and exciting for her.

I wanted to inform residents of Massachusetts that all children between the ages of 0 - 3 years old who qualify for the Massachusetts Early Intervention Program will receive services at no charge. The income-based fee was waived in 2013 for every income bracket (the fee was between $0 -$1500 per child based on income!).

Anyone can make an appointment with Early Intervention and they will send a team of professionals to your home to examine your baby or young child for any developmental delays (speech, motor, etc.). This meeting is at no cost to the family as well. If it is determined that your child needs services, they will send professionals once a week to your home and provide whatever necessary services your child requires. During Pregnancy: Let me suggest....

I wanted to share with my fellow moms and moms-to-be the products that I found incredibly useful during my pregnancy in 2011. These items were absolute necessities and completely worth the investment because of the relief, comfort and relaxation that I experienced using these products.

Snoogle Original Total Body Pillow

This pregnancy pillow was an absolute life saver! At 10 weeks pregnant I was feeling a lot of ligament pain at night and had a very difficult time getting to sleep. I bought the Snoogle that week and used it for the rest of my pregnancy and for several months post pregnancy. When I used the Snoogle for the first time, I had one of the most relaxing night's sleep that I had experienced in a long time. Prenatal Cradle Best Cradle

After the first trimester, I knew that the weight from my stomach and the ligament pain was going to be very uncomfortable when walking. I found the Prenatal Cradle Best Cradle support harness to be very helpful in relieving me from this discomfort. I could wear the Prenatal Cradle Best Cradle under my clothes to give me relief from the ligament pain and enable me to walk with comfort during the second trimester.

The Prenatal Cradle Best Cradle support harness should only be used during the first and second trimester only because, during the third trimester, the stomach is very heavy and the cradle will be too small to support your stomach's weight. In the last 6 weeks of my pregnancy, I really started to feel anxious about the big day. These feelings of anxiety were very paralyzing and I did not want to feel this way on the day that my daughter was to be born. I knew I needed something more than just soft music to relax me and give me some sense of control over these feelings.

I found www.hypnobabies.com and downloaded an mp3 from their website to help me relax and prepare for the big event. The video really helped calm me down dramatically.

I watched it 2-3 times per week for the last 6 weeks of my pregnancy. Hypnobabies.com has an extensive program to help women relax and feel calmer, especially during pregnancy. Pure Stress Relief by LifeScapes

I also listened to a stress relief CD called "Pure Stress Relief" by LifeScapes. This CD is a 3 box set that includes a piano music CD, a guitar music CD and a pure relaxation CD (this one was my favorite!). Both the music CD and the Hypnobabies.com mp3 really helped me to feel totally relaxed and calm during my pregnancy, which ultimately, made my labor a lot easier. (Just as a footnote, I was asked by the maternity ward doctors about the types of relaxation techniques that I had used during my pregnancy because I was so relaxed during labor).

Hyacinth Diffuser Oil by Seda France

In the final stretch of my pregnancy, the Pure Stress Relief CD, Hypnobabies.com mp3 and using Hyacinth scented diffuser oil with reed sticks (during early contractions) were an absolute necessity.

Inhaling the strong, sweet scent of hyacinth oil as soon as a contraction occurred significantly reduced the intensity of the labor pain, making the contraction more tolerable for me. Depend Underwear for Women (Maximum Absorbancy)

In the last month of my pregnancy, I wanted to be prepared in case my 'water broke' at an inconvenient time (in a store, in the car, etc.). I came up with the idea of wearing Depend Underwear for Women (Maximum Absorbancy). After I had my daughter, I continued to wear them for another 2 months post pregnancy. When I was four months pregnant, I decided to begin the shopping for my post pregnancy time and bought the Medela Breast Pump in the Backpack. This breast pump was an absolute lifesaver! With this breast pump I never suffered from being engorged and my husband could bottle feed our daughter (giving me a little break). The backpack version here allowed me to take the breast pump with me safely on trips and place it on my back which saved room in my stroller storage bag. My Brest Friend Breastfeeding Pillow

The My Brest Friend Breastfeeding Pillow was a life saver and wonderful to have when I fed my daughter. It has a built-in pillow for her head, making access to her food easier for her and more comfortable. The adjustable strap allows this pillow to fit a woman of almost any size in the postpartum period. The pillow is stiff and does not bend in the middle at all (making the breastfeeding easier), is well supported with comfortable padding in the back and has a removable cover for easy cleaning (the Boppy, for example, bends in the middle, does not fit properly around a women's mid-section and was not originally designed as a breastfeeding pillow).

Using the My Brest Friend Breastfeeding Pillow allowed me to feed my daughter without having to hold her up all of the time and wearing down my arm muscles in the process!

This pillow was suggested to me by the instructor for my breastfeeding class that I took prior to my daughter's arrival. She told me that the My Brest Friend Breastfeeding Pillow was the only one that was actually designed as a breastfeeding pillow - so I bought it right away! Lansinoh Nursing Pads

I initially bought the Lansinoh Nursing Pads and found these to be the most absorbent. These pads do not break down when wet, leaving part of the tissue lining on your skin. This can be an annoying problem when breastfeeding because the tissue lining sticks to your skin and has to be removed quickly before feeding. If your child is crying and hungry, you don't need layers from a cheap breast pad sticking to your chest and making more work for you at that moment.

Think of Creating new Storage Space

During the second trimester of my pregnancy, I decided that new storage space would be a necessity in the nursery beyond the closet storage. I needed it to be easily accessible and I wanted to be able to see all of the products and supplies that I had purchased as well. I went to Home Depot and bought 3 inexpensive wire closet shelving pieces (these ones can support 20-25 pounds of weight) and placed them behind the door to the nursery (which is normally a useless space). The diaper boxes were too heavy for the shelving which is why I placed them in the floor area of the storage space. I bought an asian-style room divider and used that to create a wall around the shelving so that it looked attractive, but hidden.

I also bought several 8 1/2 x 11 inch pre-cut plexiglass pieces and placed them on the shelving. This allowed me to place bottles and other small items on the shelving without having them fall over or fall through the prongs of the shelving - it also allowed me to line up all of the products in order to see them better (see picture above).

Home Depot can cut these closet storage shelving pieces to fit your space - just measure the space out beforehand. To cover the sharp, cut edges of the shelving, I bought ClosetMaid Large and Small Shelf Caps. This shelving/storage project (which I nicknamed "The Store") worked out really well for us and has been very convenient when accessing our baby supplies and storage. In addition, it made a great storage area out of a completely useless space in the nursery. Dealing with Stretchmarks

During my pregnancy, I found Jean, a fellow 'mompreneur', who sold a kit to help reduce the look of stretch marks after pregnancy. Her kit included St. Ives Blemish Control Apricot Scrub, St. Ives Timeless Skin Collagen Elastin Moisturizer, Aloe Life Aloe Vera Skin Gel and a hand-held wooden massage brush.

I applied the scrub to my stomach and scrubbed my stomach in a circular motion with the massage brush 3 times per month (every 10 days), after a 20 minute bath on each side of my stomach until my skin was slightly red. I then wiped my stomach clean with a wet cloth and mixed in a bowl a small spoonful of the skin collagen and a small spoonful of the Aloe Vera. I applied this mixture to my stomach with my hands. Every day I applied a small mixture of the Aloe Vera and the collagen to my stomach to help with the healing.

My stomach, 1 1/2 years post pregnancy

I used the kit regularly for 6 months post pregnancy and
intermittently over the next 12 months (in some cases only using the cream after bathing). This remedy was very effective in reducing the look of my stretch marks. At 1 1/2 years post pregnancy, my stomach looks a lot better and the dark scars have significantly faded.

I resumed using the kit (at 1 1/2 years post pregnancy) for 4 months straight. I used the healing cream for the next few months and took this picture to the right at 28 months post pregnancy. As you can see, the remaining dark scars have faded and my stomach skin no longer looks as severely scarred and damaged. I am happy with the result from using this kit, especially since it did not involve special skin treatments or surgery.

I found a great service for postpartum women looking to alter their old, pre-pregnancy jeans that don't quite fit anymore. This company recognizes that a lot of women are tired of ill fitting maternity jeans or are not able to find the right fitting jeans to fit their waist!

The website www.Belly-Jeans.com is owned by another fellow 'mompreneur', Cheryl Holst, who, after her 5th pregnancy, decided to use her sewing skills to make her jeans more comfortable during, and after, her pregnancy.

Cheryl can convert almost any pair of jeans into comfortable maternity jeans using a special elastic band, known as the 'Belly Band'. She offers different styles, fabric choices and other sewing services such as V-Fly extension, hemming and patching. She can also convert shorts, skirts and other 'jean-cut' style pants.

Here is a pair of my old jeans altered by Belly-jeans to fit my postpartum waistline (see picture to the left).

As you can see, my jeans have a fun waistband color that will compliment my baby's clothes and my stroller.

Diastasis Recti

According to the old Isis Parenting.com blog (now only on Facebook), "During pregnancy the two halves of the outermost abdominal layer, the rectus abdominis, can become separated. This separation is called diastasis recti, and the separation happens because the growing baby and uterus put a forceful pressure on the connective tissue that holds the two halves of the muscles together, causing the connective tissue to stretch apart and become weak." Unfortunately, left uncorrected, this condition can cause long term back pain. There are ways to reduce the stretched muscles and connective tissue in order to correct the diastasis. I know of three: Yoga, Pilates and crunches at home using a split. Livestrong.com: My Plate

I had used the "My Plate" application and database from Livestrong.com 6 months before I was pregnant to help me successfully lose weight. I absolutely love My Plate - you can set a weekly weight goal using their database, create menus for each meal in your day and check the database for food that you are not sure about in terms of calories, fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrates, fiber, protein and sugars. The My Plate program calculates the amount of each of these items based on your weight goal and intake. It also displays the correct amount of each item that you should consume per day! My Plate on Livestrong.com is a fantastic tool and I highly recommend using this site when you are ready to lose weight (you will lose it the right away!). Once you are signed up with a free account, set your weight goals and start a My Plate menu.

For online weight loss support, go to the tab called 'Community', click on 'Lose Weight' to join the weight loss support thread. This is a very positive and supportive group - one that I found very encouraging.

International MOMS Club

The MOMS Club, according to their website, 'is a support group designed for the at-home mother'. At-home mothers 'need a support group that understands their special needs as an at-home mother and we're it! We are the first, largest and fastest growing support group specifically for ALL at-home mothers.'

By joining the MOMS Club, I have been able to meet other mothers with children the same age in my neighborhood and attend or create play dates for the group at places in Boston that I have enjoyed with our daughter!

"The infamous "muffin top".

After pregnancy, many women notice an unwelcome belly bulge; sometimes called the “mummy tummy”, the “muffin top” or the “baby bulge”. Even if you were a fitness enthusiast before, during, and after pregnancy you may notice you just can’t seem to banish the bump! We often think that this new belly is from fat, but it’s actually due to changes in our abdominal muscle structure.

During pregnancy the two halves of the outermost abdominal layer, the rectus abdominis, can become separated. This separation is called diastasis recti, and is the cause of the dreaded belly bulge. The separation happens because the growing baby and uterus put a forceful pressure on the connective tissue that holds the two halves of the muscles together, causing the connective tissue to stretch apart and become weak. Although not all women get diastasis recti when pregnant, it is extremely common. Also, the more pregnancies you experience, the worse it may get.

How can you tell if you have diastasis?
To find out if you have diastasis, lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet on the floor. Place a hand over your belly button with your fingers pointing towards your toes. Relax your abdominal muscles and lift your head like you are doing a crunch, bringing your ribcage towards your pelvis. Press with gentle pressure and move your fingers from side to side to feel the right and left edges of the rectus abdominis. You have diastasis if the gap between the muscle is 2 fingers wide or more. You may even see a bulge or mound protruding. You can also move your fingers above and below the navel to see how long the separation is.

Can you prevent or reduce the separation?
The good news is, you can help reduce the separation of these muscles by avoiding the following movements:

Sitting straight up from a lying position. Instead, roll over to one side then use your arms to push you up without the help of your abdominal muscles.
Abdominal exercises that work the exterior abdominal muscles, like crunches and oblique crossovers. These will put additional strain on your rectus abdominis.
Lifting and carrying heavy objects or any other movements that cause the belly to protrude out upon exertion.

Can I improve the situation?
Yes. Wearing a splint over your post partum belly will help physically bring the two sides of the rectus abdominis together. Splinting while performing core strengthening exercises can help to heal the separation and strengthen the connective tissue. In addition, be aware of your core muscles. By engaging your core during movements such as climbing stairs or carrying a baby, you can prevent further rectus stretching and maybe even help shorten the gap.
For most women, diastasis recti resulting from pregnancy is unavoidable. However, knowing is half the battle, and once you know that you have diastasis, you can be more thoughtful of your exercises and habits to help get rid of that “mummy tummy”!

Milestones: My Daughter's Early Learning, Part 4

This month I continue to repeat my 'Milestones' series with Part 4 to, once again, give new parents ideas about how to play with your 1 year old. In addition, I share with new parents the toys and games I that introduced as part of the 'Milestones' series from 2013.

Colors

I knew that at some point I would need to begin focusing on introducing my daughter to lots of different colors in a creative and fun way in hopes that she could enjoy exploring colors beyond just the usual colored markers and finger paint.

When my daughter was 13 months old, I decided that I needed her to pay closer attention to colors. As mentioned in my earlier post "Milestones...(Part 1, October 2012)", I bought clothes that were much brighter in color that drew her attention to me and helped her to become more familiar with colors. She really enjoyed seeing me in these bright, happy colors and is familiar with her Mom's wardrobe. She now treats her Mom's wardrobe as a bright spot in our home.

My colorful wardrobe bought in the fall of 2012 and the winter of 2013 included lots of bright colors, including a pair of yellow pants (see picture to the right) converted into Belly-Jeans for comfort.

The outfits were bought from H&M, Ann Taylor, Gap and Old Navy. We had a lot of fun buying these outfits and I was always able to keep my daughter's attention and encourage her to focus on these bright and happy colors!

At 14 months old, I decided to use a different, attractive color nail polish on each finger and on one hand (my left hand) in order to expose my daughter to a different color every time I played with her or picked her up. She liked the combination seen below of the nail polishes that I arranged. I decided to keep the nail polishes on for 2 weeks. This gave her the opportunity to see these colors every day for a good amount of time. In this way, I could always have the same 5 colors on display for her to see all of the time, especially if I was pushing her stroller (baby facing me, she always saw my hands).

I enjoyed creating this arrangement of colors for her. Here is the list of the colors and brands:

Creative play

I really enjoyed watching my daughter use her toys in a creative way. In the video below, my daughter enjoys using her stroller toy's flower link as a bracelet. She had been using the flower link in this way for one week before I recorded this video.

Below is a video of my daughter at 16 months and 2 days old stacking her blocks. She stacks the blocks multiple times, including an attempt to stack a block onto a round-shaped block. I enjoyed observing her use as many blocks as she could to construct her different sized block creations.

Play and Direction Activity

When my daughter was 15 months old, I created an activity that involved playing a game with the Fisher Price Baby's First Blocks (Pink) (there is also a boy version here-*link*) by using the shapes as glasses on my eyes and having my daughter remove them and place the shapes into the bucket (without the lid on), see the video below.

This was a different use of this toy from what it was originally designed to do, but all toys can be played with in many creative ways - this is just one of those ways. My video below shows myself and my daughter engaging in this activity.

I came up with this idea one evening when my husband and I were playing with our daughter and I wanted to peek through the small holes in the shapes - I immediately grabbed my camera and recorded the video below. As you will see, this activity turned into a very fun game between us.

You will notice how incredibly happy my daughter is while pulling the shapes from my eyes and putting them back into the container (with the pink lid removed). At 15 months old, I introduced the Hape Zoo Animals Block Puzzle (http://www.hapetoys.com/us/en/p/happy-puzzle/zoo-animals-block-puzzle/1595). I sat with my daughter and set up the giraffe design first (as shown in the picture below) because it had a unique shape once completed.

After the set up, I realized that the best way to have my daughter play with this toy was to have her concentrate on one aspect of the puzzle first. I tapped my finger twice on each corner block of the puzzle: I did this to identify the corner pieces and help her understand how to start the puzzle using the corner pieces first.

My daughter typically reached for a corner block of the giraffe design and would turn over a few of the blocks to view the other sides of them. Watching her explore this puzzle and enjoy the friendly animal characters was a very interesting and delightful experience for both of us.

The Problem with "Clean-Up Time"

I wanted my fellow new moms to know that during my daughter's play time, I don't force her to "clean up" her toys (since I do not consider this to be a real activity with my daughter). I do not believe that "clean up time" is necessary, or educational for my child - it just frustrates her, bores her, causes her to protest and become angry. I do not want my child to resent play time with me because it would involve "clean up time" - and that the frustration from "clean up time" would affect her level of interest during this exploration phase of her life.

My Brest Friend Breastfeeding Pillow

The My Brest Friend Breastfeeding Pillow was a life saver and wonderful to have when I fed my daughter. It has a built-in pillow for her head, making access to her food easier for her and more comfortable. The adjustable strap allows this pillow to fit a woman of almost any size in the postpartum period. The pillow is stiff and does not bend in the middle at all (making the breastfeeding easier), is well supported with comfortable padding in the back and has a removable cover for easy cleaning (the Boppy, for example, bends in the middle, does not fit properly around a women's mid-section and was not originally designed as a breastfeeding pillow).

Dealing with Stretchmarks

During my pregnancy, I found Jean, a fellow 'mompreneur', who sold a kit to help reduce the look of stretch marks after pregnancy. Her kit included St. Ives Blemish Control Apricot Scrub, St. Ives Timeless Skin Collagen Elastin Moisturizer, Aloe Life Aloe Vera Skin Gel and a hand-held wooden massage brush.

I applied the scrub to my stomach and scrubbed my stomach in a circular motion with the massage brush 3 times per month (every 10 days), after a 20 minute bath on each side of my stomach until my skin was slightly red. I then wiped my stomach clean with a wet cloth and mixed in a bowl a small spoonful of the skin collagen and a small spoonful of the Aloe Vera. I applied this mixture to my stomach with my hands. Every day I applied a small mixture of the Aloe Vera and the collagen to my stomach to help with the healing.

Milestones: My Daughter's Early Learning, Part 3

This month I continue to repeat my 'Milestones' series with Part 3 to, once again, give new parents ideas about how to play with your 1 year old. In addition, I share with new parents the toys and games I that introduced in the 'Milestones' series in 2013.

Drums and Music

In some of the baby classes that I have attended, there were large drums provided for the children. At the time, I noticed that the babies in class did not know any consistent beats and typically hit the drum randomly. This was fun for them at first, but eventually became boring. My daughter was 11 months old when I decided that it would be better to introduce to her a consistent beat that I was familiar with from the song 'I Like to Be in America' from the play West Side Story.

The popular hand/foot clap combination from this song was a favorite of mine from my youth. I played this beat on the classroom drum for her several times, then let her attempt to repeat it. This was the only beat I played on the drums, or on a box at home, so that she would become familiar with it and, possibly, repeat it. Below is a video that I made in which I play this drum beat slowly for everyone to follow along:

Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, MA

The day before she was 13 months old, we visited the Peabody Essex Museum's children's area in Salem, MA and I wanted to show her the wind/sand exhibit that included a large circular wind machine with a thick glass top to allow the children to view the movement of the sand. When I placed her on the machine to view the sand, she took a few minutes to observe and then began using the glass top as a drum. I was amazed when she repeated the 'I Like to Be in America' song's drum beat that I had introduced to her one month beforehand! She repeated the beat using both hands for percussion. It was an exciting moment for both of us, and made me realize that babies could learn something like a drum beat quickly and make it a part of their play time. I was finally able to capture her repeating the drum beat in the short video below at 13 months old:

Also, at 1 year old (12 months), I decided to introduce her to some new classical music pieces that I thought she might enjoy. I have 'The Nutcracker' music on a CD and played the entire playlist for her one morning as we both sat together on the couch. The music was coming from my portable cd player/radio and she liked touching the speakers as well as some of the buttons on the front of the player/radio.

Over the next few weeks, I noticed that when she spoke in her 'baby talk' she sounded like she was singing some of the songs from The Nutcracker! I was pleased to hear her 'singing' these songs because these songs were meant for children and since classical music has a more organized beat, I felt it was probably easier for her to recall (as opposed to other genres of music).

Magazines

In addition to the music, at 1 year old (12 months), I thought that it might be fun for my daughter to experience playing with magazines and exercise her fingers by turning the pages. I had a few Dwell magazines, an Elle Decor and a few Parents magazines available for her to explore (I chose these magazines because they did not have inappropriate or indecent pictures). She went through each magazine and moved the pages back and forth. In some cases, I had to open the magazine in order to get her started. I noticed that she didn't rip any pages, she just looked at them carefully and enjoyed moving the pages along to look at more pictures.

Over the next few weeks, I noticed that she enjoyed picking up her books and flipping through the pages, examining the pictures and speaking as if she were reading a story. I enjoyed watching her entertain herself in this way. I could see that she was very happy and was enjoying her fantasy play.

Relaxing Scent

I noticed that my daughter really loved the scent of my Coconut Body Mist spray from The Body Shop. I noticed that she would relax more when she smelled this scent on me.

I wondered if I sprayed this mist anywhere, would she relax once she smelled this scent (because it smelled like mommy). Since she had become resistant to riding in the stroller, and didn't like being strapped in, I decided that I would pump the Coconut Body Mist spray a couple of times over the stroller seat to make it smell desirable to her in hopes that she would sit in her stroller without resistance when we were ready to leave.

As it turned out, the Coconut Body Mist spray was very effective in encouraging her to sit in her stroller and not resist being strapped in. I was so happy to see that the mist worked - and I noticed once I stopped spraying, she became resistant again to sitting in the stroller. I sprayed the stroller every couple of days so that the scent remained present in the stroller. I think she might have been comforted by the smell because it 'smelled like mommy' and made her relax. Once my daughter started to crawl at 12 months old, I crawled along with her and sang her name like elephants do for their young to get them to follow the mother elephant.

In the cell phone video above (pardon the graininess), you can hear me singing her name as she crawls towards me. While playing 'mommy elephant', I would sing her name after every third thump (my elephant moved very slow because of this).

Full body roll and chase (beginning at 1 year old)

In this activity, I would lay on the ground on my back, extend my arms over my head and slowly roll over onto my stomach and then over again onto my back. My daughter loved this because she could chase me and, at times, push me over onto my stomach. I loved doing this activity with her because she always laughed very hard and enjoyed turning over her mom.

After about 6 weeks of this activity (she was 13 1/2 months old), my daughter would lay on her back sometimes after playing with her toys. I decided that this was her way of signaling to me that she wanted me to play the 'game' full body roll and chase with her. As soon as I completed one full body roll, she immediately rose up, crawled over to me and attempted to roll me onto my stomach. This activity was really fun for both of us - she had a chance to play with me, get some exercise and I had a chance to rest a little bit on the floor!

Chewbeads Necklace and Block Sorting

With all of the little milestones that she had so far, I was most pleased on the day that she turned 13 months old and was playing with my pink Chewbeads necklace (www.Chewbeads.com). This was the day that she put the necklace over her head and wore it as a necklace for the first time! She then removed the necklace by pulling it carefully over her head again, unassisted by me. She did this a few times while I sat and observed.

Once she was done, she left the necklace on and began to crawl away - that is when I removed it immediately - for safety reasons, I did not want her crawling away with the necklace around her neck. As she grew older, I made sure that this necklace was always in a safe place.

What was most amazing about this event is that I had not shown her how to wear the necklace in our play time. She had only seen me put the necklace on in the morning every day. She obviously learned to wear the necklace by observing her mom and decided to try it on herself. By the way, if you decide to buy this necklace, the brighter, solid color (pink or green) necklaces are better than the darker ones. I noticed that my daughter's baby pals were more attracted to my pink necklace than a darker colored necklace. Her baby pals that had not been introduced to a brighter colored Chewbeads necklace became very excited once they saw my pink necklace and wanted to play with it, bite on the beads and wear it (including many of her boy pals!). Color, in this case, mattered to these babies.

Between 13 months old and 13 1/2 months old, my daughter became more selective with her blocks. She would collect her favorite blocks and place them in a see-through container (the blue container shown is originally from her infant toy the Melissa & Doug's Deluxe Fishbowl Fill & Spill Soft Baby Toy, http://www.melissaanddoug.com/fishbowl-fill-and-spill/3044.html ).

At this point, I decided that I would record which blocks she chose as her favorites. I took this picture above immediately after she was done choosing these blocks, placing them in the blue container and had crawled away. I found it interesting that she had chosen blocks that had animal printing as well as two different shapes of the non-printed blocks.

It was nice to see that after 2 1/2 months of playing with her blocks how much she appreciated these shapes and colors. Also, since these were her favorite blocks at the time, I decided to pay closer attention to her color choices and use this as a reference for future toys.

Open Creative Play Time

I decided at 13 1/2 months that my daughter's play time would include time in which I would quietly observe her play with toys and other items that she found interesting. I never expected her to have the type of creative play as she did in this next video.

During this video of her play time (she is 13 1/2 months old) I was able to capture her using new packages of diapers as drums and playing her own beat. This was an activity that she made up herself on the spot without any suggestion or intervention from anyone. I was so surprised to see my daughter creating her own 'toys' from items in the baby supply area of her nursery. Additionally in this video, she puts on the Chewbeads necklace and uses her feet for the first time to kick away some of her blocks .

Words

By 12 1/2 months old, she was using the words 'hey', 'this', 'that', 'that's', 'Dad' and 'Mama'. By 13 1/2 months old, she had spoken a few more words including 'why', 'look' and 'yes'. I was happy to see that by 13 1/2 months old, my daughter was using more than half of these words regularly.

As far as I was concerned at the time, speaking these words was another one of her milestones and showed me that her mind was progressing rapidly and that her level of knowledge was compounding at an accelerated rate.

Also, at 12 1/2 months old, I bought her a wonderful book called "Hugs" by iBaby. My daughter enjoyed this book like a toy and she played with it all of the time. The ribbons made the book interesting to her and allowed her to 'play' with it and the characters in the story.

I placed each baby animal into the proper sleeve with the matching 'Mommy' animal character. When I read each page, I pulled out the baby animal and identified the name of that animal, then placed the baby animal back in the sleeve. I began by purchasing the Natural Animal Wooden Blocks set by Hape Toys. She spent almost her entire 11th month playing with her new blocks and enjoying her older toys as well. She seemed to really like the triangle shape the most and the brightly colored blocks (neon green and yellow mostly). They now have a new version called Maple Blocks sold at Hape Toys here:

"Yay, my new shape toys - I can't wait!"

Next on the list was the Melissa & Doug Chunky Puzzle of Safari Animals. She loved the animal shapes and would hold on to her favorite ones the most. She was not ready to place the animals back in the puzzle, but I figured, that this would come with time. In the meantime, she could have fun enjoying the safari animal puzzle pieces!

I hope the video was helpful to those trying to help their babies explore the big world around them, while having fun with their baby (without stressing them out before they have had a chance to become who they are supposed to be in life).

This series will continue over the next few months and I hope that new moms (and dads!) will have fun enjoying the videos, pictures, ideas and activities that I created for my daughter. In some cases, I created activities by accident while playing another type of game with her. By creating these activities, my time spent with my 11 - 18 month old daughter was enjoyable, happy and exciting for her.

Most importantly, I wanted to inform residents of Massachusetts that all children between the ages of
0 - 3 years old who qualify for the Massachusetts Early Intervention Program will receive services at no charge. The income-based fee was waived in 2013 for every income bracket (the fee was between $0 -$1500 per child based on income!).

Anyone can make an appointment with Early Intervention and they will send a team of professionals to your home to examine your baby or young child for any developmental delays (speech, motor, etc.). This meeting is at no cost to the family as well. If it is determined that your child needs services, they will send professionals once a week to your home and provide whatever necessary services your child requires. May is Pregnancy Awareness Month!

I wanted to make my NetworkforMoms.org buddies aware again this year that the month of May is Pregnancy Awareness Month. The organization, Pregnancy Awareness Month, has a free event every year to help pregnant women, new parents, new grandparents and families with information about pregnancy and baby products.

Pregnancy Awareness Month (P.A.M), according to their website, is an 'organization dedicated to inspiring women during pregnancy with educational initiatives spotlighting nutrition, wellness and all around nurturing'.

During the month of May, P.A.M's. conference-style event in Los Angeles, California features a variety of products, specialists and experts in the field of pregnancy, motherhood and children.

This year the event will take place on Sunday, May 3, 2015 at Writer's Boot Camp at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, CA from 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.(click here for information). For those moms that may live in the Los Angeles area, or if you know someone who is pregnant or has small children and live in that area, feel free to pass this information along to them. New moms and moms-to-be will be thankful to you for making them aware of this event! Don't forget to mention NetworkforMoms.org!

In light of this event, I wanted to share with my fellow NetworkforMoms.org buddies products that I found incredibly useful during my pregnancy in 2011. In the last 6 weeks of my pregnancy, I really started to feel anxious about the big day. These feelings of anxiety were very paralyzing and I did not want to feel this way on the day that my daughter was to be born. I knew I needed something more than just soft music to relax me and give me some sense of control over these feelings.

I found www.hypnobabies.com and downloaded an mp3 from their website to help me relax and prepare for the big event. The video really helped calm me down dramatically.

I watched it 2-3 times per week for the last 6 weeks of my pregnancy. Hypnobabies.com has an extensive program to help women relax and feel calmer, especially during pregnancy. With this breast pump I never suffered from being engorged and my husband could bottle feed our daughter (giving me a little break). The backpack version here allowed me to take the breast pump with me safely on trips and place it on my back which saved room in my stroller storage bag. My Brest Friend Breastfeeding Pillow

The My Brest Friend Breastfeeding Pillow was a life saver and wonderful to have when I fed my daughter. It has a built-in pillow for her head, making access to her food easier for her and more comfortable. The adjustable strap allows this pillow to fit a woman of almost any size in the postpartum period. The pillow is stiff and does not bend in the middle at all (making the breastfeeding easier), is well supported with comfortable padding in the back and has a removable cover for easy cleaning (the Boppy, for example, bends in the middle, does not fit properly around a women's mid-section and was not originally designed as a breastfeeding pillow).

Using the My Brest Friend Breastfeeding Pillow allowed me to feed my daughter without having to hold her up all of the time and wearing down my arm muscles in the process!

This pillow was suggested to me by the instructor for my breastfeeding class that I took prior to my daughter's arrival. I resumed using the kit (at 1 1/2 years post pregnancy) for 4 months straight. I used the healing cream for the next few months and took this picture to the right at 28 months post pregnancy. As you can see, the remaining dark scars have faded and my stomach skin no longer looks as severely scarred and damaged. I am happy with the result from using this kit, especially since it did not involve special skin treatments or surgery.

This is a great product for postpartum women or teenagers (who experience stretch marks during their development).

I found a great service for postpartum women looking to alter their old, pre-pregnancy jeans that don't quite fit anymore. This company recognizes that a lot of women are tired of ill fitting maternity jeans or are not able to find the right fitting jeans to fit their waist!

The website www.Belly-Jeans.com is owned by another fellow 'mompreneur', Cheryl Holst, who, after her 5th pregnancy, decided to use her sewing skills to make her jeans more comfortable during, and after, her pregnancy.

Here is a pair of my old jeans altered by Belly-jeans to fit my postpartum waistline (see picture to the left).

As you can see, my jeans have a fun waistband color that will compliment my baby's clothes and my stroller.
I chose the 'Full DemiBand' Belly Band with the V-fly extension. I just love my Belly Jeans and am so thankful for this service. Thanks Cheryl!

Diastasis Recti

According to the old IsisParenting.com blog (now only on Facebook), "During pregnancy the two halves of the outermost abdominal layer, the rectus abdominis, can become separated. This separation is called diastasis recti, and the separation happens because the growing baby and uterus put a forceful pressure on the connective tissue that holds the two halves of the muscles together, causing the connective tissue to stretch apart and become weak." Unfortunately, left uncorrected, this condition can cause long term back pain. There are ways to reduce the stretched muscles and connective tissue in order to correct the diastasis. I know of three: Yoga, Pilates and crunches at home using a split. I attended classes at a Boston company, Isis Parenting, but they have recently closed (they only have an online presence now). I also had classes at Mama & Me in Boston, who have increased their number of classes for the 0 - 3 age group to meet the needs of former Isis clients and the Boston community, www.MyMamaAndMe.com.

Joining these classes is a great way to meet other mothers with children in the same age group and to make 'mommy' friends who can join you for play dates!

Presenting Your Present

I wanted to create a quick post for all of the moms who are wrapping Santa's gifts and need a little inspiration.

During this time of year, parents tend to rush when wrapping gifts, however, children take notice of the beautiful wrapping material as well as any added embellishments that you include in your finishing touches for your gifts. Here are my choices for fun and educational toys from my generation. These toys kept us interested and entertained for hours! I find that many of these toys have a certain charm that brings about a warm feeling of happiness that I experienced as a child. I hope that my NetworkforMoms.org friends will find these toys as fun and charming as I did, especially the ones that involved playtime with my parents!

Just as a reminder, retro toys were made according to old safety standards, that is why parents must always check the toys first for potential choking hazards, sharp edges, etc. to prevent accidents.

New Fatherhood: The Frank Interview

I wanted to share with my audience a recent interview with my husband, Frank, who you have seen here on NetworkforMoms.org. I'm sure some of you have wondered what Frank is like - let me say that he is a wonderful father, husband and friend. Frank wanted to have a daughter - he told me this when we were pregnant and prior to receiving our results from the amniocentesis. He got his wish and loves pink so much, he wanted me to paint all of the rooms the same pink color that is in our daughter's nursery! I was tempted, but decided to keep the pink in the nursery for now.

My husband, Frank, is an attorney (for almost 15 years) working for a small firm in Boston. Once we knew we were on our way to parenthood, Frank made the announcement and could not wait for the big day! Frank's experience during my pregnancy and after our daughter was born is one that I wanted to share for the benefit of new fathers or fathers-to-be. Without further adieu, here's my Frank:

Joy: Hi Frank, I wanted to interview you for NetworkforMoms.org and ask a few questions about your daddy experience. Can you describe how you felt once we knew we were having a daughter?

Frank: Excitement. Anticipation. My twin brother Michael is the best but I think I missed something growing up without a sister. I also spent too much time doing the 'right' thing: School and sports and part-time jobs meant studying by myself or running on all-men teams or working in restaurant kitchens. I didn't spend enough time with friendly, relaxed, interesting women. So meeting you (Joy) after law school was a real trip. You're so breezy and clever and fun. We clicked so the thought of having a mini-Joy (a daughter as bright and as lively) was perfect.

Joy: When you told other men that you were having a baby, can you describe some of those responses and how you felt about them? Also, did you feel that these responses were helpful?

Frank: Responses ranged from helpful to non-helpful. By helpful I mean: "Having a daughter means you'll fall in love with another woman." That's my favorite. Evelyn's the other woman in my life. Also: "Being a dad means you'll have a sense of purpose and direction you've never had before." "Being a dad means you'll always look forward to going home." By non-helpful I mean: "Being a dad means you'll be spending money for the rest of your life." Responses were mostly helpful.

Joy: Once our daughter was born and we showed her to family and friends, what surprised you the most about their reactions? For example, your Dad, Aunts/Uncles/cousins.

Frank: Their surprise was not so much that Evelyn was born but that I was now a "father". Their surprise was (and perhaps this is my surprise that I was now a "father" projected on them): We know Frank as a guy who studied hard in school and works hard as an attorney and listens to The Who and crashes on weekends in a small apartment in Beacon Hill with his brother. But now all of a sudden he's dating a woman who works in his building (is she older?) and they're moving in together (Brookline?) and they're getting married and planning a family? and they're having a daughter after 2 years of marriage? (such a pretty baby ... looks a lot like Frank's mom ...) In any event: Everyone (to their credit) did react positively to Evelyn (as pretty, warm, cuddly, inquisitive and well-behaved as she is) but were surprised (I think) that I was now a "father" and we were now "parents".

Joy: Was it hard to return to work after being home with me for 2 weeks?

Frank: Yes. A couple days before Evelyn was born, I "entered" the tunnel ... and 2 weeks later I "exited" the tunnel ... quite an experience in the interim ... Evelyn was now our daughter and you were now a Mom and I was now a Dad ... and you were doing what Moms do (everything) (diapers, bottles, feedings, bubble-baths, onesies, check-ups, indoors, outdoors, around the clock) and, 2 weeks later, I needed to do what Dads do (return to work) (in the usual course ... we're lucky the managing attorneys at my firm knew you and understood the 'process' ...) For the initial weeks, I did worry about you and Evelyn simply because you'd never 'done this before' ... but you always 'had the hang of it' ... and we figured out a routine (for weekdays when I was at work, for weeknights when I got home, for weekends when the three of us could go out together, to beaches, museums, parks, road trips). In no time (even less than 3 weeks I think) I could be at work one moment and off and running with you and Evelyn at night the next moment to Babies-R-Us and road-trips and family dinners out.

Joy: How do you feel now about the time that you spend with me and our daughter?

Frank: I love it. We both know ... for you and for me ... parenting is hard work ... parenting is tiring ... but ultimately parenting is a whirlwind of an experience that re-invents itself every day ... for me, parenting filled an emptiness I didn't know existed ... we're lucky that Evelyn is sweet, loving, playful, curious and as understanding as she is (in fact, she does seem to understand us).

Joy: What activities do you enjoy with our daughter the most?

Frank: Parks (Minot rose garden in Brookline), museums (Peabody-Essex in Salem, MFA), beaches (Singing Beach in Manchester, when it cools off in the fall). These are wide open spaces (indoors and outdoors) where Evelyn and I can run around, chase each other, explore and play. The interaction with Evelyn and freedom of these places are the best.

People in the Park

For the past two summers, I have enjoyed taking my child to play in Winthrop Park in our neighborhood. The people in the park that I have seen regularly have really enjoyed their time with their children and I have been pleased to see the many toy donations to the park.

The sand pit toys can be arranged quickly for easy access.

I have noticed that after the children played with the donated toys in the sand pit or the spray pool, as expected, these areas looked disorganized. Also, many of the donated children's vehicles were left in different areas of the park.

So, when my daughter was using the sand pit, I would dig out any buried toys and place them along the side of the sand pit so that children could access them and my daughter could find them. Once she was finished playing, I placed some of the items (that she had used) on the edge of the sand pit for the next child to enjoy.

I collected these vehicles nearby and placed them in an open area.

I have no problem organizing these toys while my child played in the sand pit because I want all of the children to be able to find the toys. Organizing and arranging the toys encourages the children to play and have fun in the sand pit.

Many parents that spent time in this park did not always realize that by not cleaning up after their child had played, the park looked messy, disorganized and unpleasant.

That is why I encourage parents to pitch in when you are in the park with your child/children and help make the park pleasant and fun for the children.

If you notice a broken toy, please remove and dispose of it -these toys are not safe!

I left the chalk behind for the children to have fun creating sidewalk drawings.

It was not a big deal for me during our time in the park to organize a few sand pit toys, arrange a few children's vehicles, remove a broken toy (these are dangerous for young children/babies) and bring sidewalk chalk to donate.

Extra chalk can be placed on tables to create drawings together.

On a recent park trip with my daughter, I took pictures of examples of a few things that parents can do in the park to help tidy up the park, make it safer and more fun for the children. For example, picking up a few small branches of leaves while walking with my daughter around the park equipment, or, removing some stones that may cause an accident.

Stones this size are too large to be in or near the play area, I remove them.

Again, if you are donating toys to the park, new toys are the best ones to give.

If you are bringing toys to the park for your children and their friends to play with, a good idea is to write your name on the toys with a marker in case one of your toys gets separated from the rest - other parents will see your name on them and place them to the side (if you want to include a phone number, that is optional).

Remember that some of the people in the park may have accidentally left their child's toy behind and will return to retrieve it, so it is best to assume that the toys in the park are not all donated.

Below I have created a list of useful suggestions for parents to review before their next trip to their local park:

1. Organizing for children's play: If your child is using the sand pit, dig out and organize the toys that are not in use. I saw many parents watching their children in the sand pit without realizing that many fun, interesting toys were buried nearby. If you dig them out your child will spend more time enjoying the sand pit. This is where a little effort on the parent's part can go a long way.

2. Remove obvious trash, including broken toys: I noticed that many of the parents did not remove broken toys - I suspect it is because they did not want to throw away something that was donated by another parent for the park. However, if the toy is broken (for example, wheels are broken and missing), it is simply time to place it in the trash without guilt because it is now a hazard for small children!

3. Remove excess branches and large stones: If you are walking with your child around the park and can scoop up stones and excess branches, that is greatly appreciated - this will help others avoid slipping/falling in the park.

4. Place children's vehicles in one, accessible spot: This is nice for the children because they know where the vehicles are located rather than becoming frustrated searching the park for their favorite vehicle. If you get chance to place a donated vehicle in the accessible spot, that is greatly appreciated.

5. Chalk: Donated chalk is always appreciated. I like to bring a typical $1 carton of sidewalk chalk, break each piece in half and leave the pieces behind for other children to enjoy creating sidewalk drawings. It is best to leave the chalk in an area of the park where parents are sitting (children feel safer when parents are nearby).

6. Donated, undamaged toys are appreciated: The most useful toys are sand pit toys (shovels, pails, etc.) and spray pool toys (ducks, pails). Children's vehicles are great to have as well, as long as the wheels are in good shape and the vehicle is still mobile.

7. Park equipment: When having your child play on the park equipment, I always stay right by her side climbing on the equipment with her, or walking alongside, to avoid injuries from falling through an opening accidentally.

I have seen children in danger of falling through the openings of the equipment because their parents were preoccupied with a phone call, talking to other parents or simply, sitting too far away from the equipment. I saw a small child (under 2 years old) fall off of the park equipment recently, so I encourage parents to stay with your children on the equipment and avoid these accidents!

I know the park benches are a temptation for parents, but it is better to stay on your feet with your small child and stay alert!

0 - 3 years old who qualify for the Massachusetts Early Intervention Program will receive services at no charge. The income-based fee was waived in 2013 for every income bracket (the fee was between $0 -$1500 per child based on income!).

Anyone can make an appointment with Early Intervention and they will send a team of professionals to your home to examine your baby or young child for any developmental delays (speech, motor, etc.). This meeting is at no cost to the family as well. If it is determined that your child needs services, they will send professionals once a week to your home and provide whatever necessary services your child requires. Mommycare: My Skin and Hair Care

Some friends and acquaintances have asked me over the last 10 years what I have used for skin care (for my face). Since I was 28 years old, I have used the same products and regimen for my face. Now in my 40s, I am very happy with the very youthful look of my skin. Also, as a result of using my skin regimen, I have never had, or needed, any type of facial or advanced skin treatment. Olay Active Hydrating Beauty Fluid (regular or sensitive skin): $12, I smooth this cream on the rest of my face and neck after applying the Olay firming cream, once in the morning and once at night.

Amazing Grass Organic Wheatgrass powder: $25, For the past 3 years, I have wheatgrass at least once per day mixed with juice. Wheatgrass helps with skin and hair health. Below I provide pictures of my face that were taken in January 2014 to show the area around my eyes and forehead. As you can see, the years of using this regimen has kept my skin smooth, hydrated and reduced the look and amount of wrinkles that I would have had by now. Ojon Damage Reverse Instant Restorative Hair Serum: $25, This was part of the Sephora gift bag. After washing my hair, I place the serum in my palms and smooth it only on the ends. The next morning my ends are soft, fluffy and healthy looking. Using Ojon in this way has minimized the amount of my split ends to the point where I have a hard time finding one!

Shea Moisture Raw Shea Retention Shampoo: $11, This is my regular shampoo and was not part of the Sephora gift. I discovered this shampoo in 2012. The one I use contains Sea Kelp and Argan Oil and is meant for dry hair.

My Pregnancy Shampoo/Conditioner:

I wanted to avoid chemicals as much as possible when I was pregnant and used these brands specifically because they were fragrance free (lots of chemicals can be hidden under the term 'fragrance' in a product's list of ingredients).

The Final Touch: My Make Up

Out to lunch for Easter, 2014.

Prior to my wedding, I was helped by a professional make up artist for my wedding make up. She used certain brands, gave me instructions to follow and I have enjoyed applying my make up using her suggestions over the years.

My original eye shadow primer was made by Urban Decay, but I now use a Benefit product. My original eye shadow by Laura Mercier came in a special palette for that season, however, I found another palette that complements my other make up and gives me a bright, fresh look.

May is Pregnancy Awareness Month!

During the month of May, P.A.M's. conference-style event in Los Angeles, California features a variety of products, specialists and experts in the field of pregnancy, motherhood and children.

This year the event will take place on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at Writer's Boot Camp at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, CA from 12 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. For those moms that may live in the Los Angeles area, or if you know someone who is pregnant or has small children and live in that area, feel free to pass this information along to them. In the last 6 weeks of my pregnancy, I really started to feel anxious about the big day. These feelings of anxiety were very paralyzing and I did not want to feel this way on the day that my daughter was to be born. I knew I needed something more than just soft music to relax me and give me some sense of control over these feelings.

I found www.hypnobabies.com and downloaded an mp3 from their website to help me relax and prepare for the big event. The video really helped calm me down dramatically.

I watched it 2-3 times per week for the last 6 weeks of my pregnancy. Hypnobabies.com has an extensive program to help women relax and feel calmer, especially during pregnancy. When I was four months pregnant, I decided to begin the shopping for my post pregnancy time and bought the Medela Breast Pump in the Backpack. This breast pump was an absolute lifesaver! With this breast pump I never suffered from being engorged and my husband could bottle feed our daughter (giving me a little break). The backpack version here allowed me to take the breast pump with me safely on trips and place it on my back which saved room in my stroller storage bag. My Brest Friend Breastfeeding Pillow

The My Brest Friend Breastfeeding Pillow was a life saver and wonderful to have when I fed my daughter. It has a built-in pillow for her head, making access to her food easier for her and more comfortable. The adjustable strap allows this pillow to fit a woman of almost any size in the postpartum period. The pillow is stiff and does not bend in the middle at all (making the breastfeeding easier), is well supported with comfortable padding in the back and has a removable cover for easy cleaning (the Boppy, for example, bends in the middle, does not fit properly around a women's mid-section and was not originally designed as a breastfeeding pillow).

Using the My Brest Friend Breastfeeding Pillow allowed me to feed my daughter without having to hold her up all of the time and wearing down my arm muscles in the process!

This pillow was suggested to me by the instructor of my breastfeeding class that I took prior to my daughter's arrival. She told me that the My Brest Friend Breastfeeding Pillow was the only one that was actually designed as a real breastfeeding pillow - so I bought it right away! I resumed using the kit (at 1 1/2 years post pregnancy) for 4 months straight. I used the healing cream for the next few months and took this picture to the right at 28 months post pregnancy. As you can see, the remaining dark scars have faded and my stomach skin no longer looks as severely scarred and damaged. I am happy with the result from using this kit, especially since it did not involve special skin treatments or surgery.

I found a great service for postpartum women looking to alter their old, pre-pregnancy jeans that don't quite fit anymore. This company recognizes that a lot of women are tired of ill fitting maternity jeans or are not able to find the right fitting jeans to fit their waist!

Here is a pair of my old jeans altered by Belly-jeans to fit my postpartum waistline (see picture to the left).

As you can see, my jeans have a fun waistband color that will compliment my baby's clothes and my stroller.

Diastasis Recti

According to the old IsisParenting.com blog (now only on Facebook), "During pregnancy the two halves of the outermost abdominal layer, the rectus abdominis, can become separated. This separation is called diastasis recti, and the separation happens because the growing baby and uterus put a forceful pressure on the connective tissue that holds the two halves of the muscles together, causing the connective tissue to stretch apart and become weak." Unfortunately, left uncorrected, this condition can cause long term back pain. There are ways to reduce the stretched muscles and connective tissue in order to correct the diastasis. I know of three: Yoga, Pilates and crunches at home using a split. Child Development Classes!

I attended classes at a Boston company, Isis Parenting, but they have recently closed (they only have an online presence now). I also had classes at Mama & Me in Boston, who have increased their number of classes for the 0 - 3 age group to meet the needs of former Isis clients and the Boston community, www.MyMamaAndMe.com.

Joining these classes is a great way to meet other mothers with children in the same age group and to make 'mommy' friends who can join you for play dates!
