Novell today announced the availability of a new subscription and support program designed to aid customers making the transition from their existing third-party Linux* distribution to SUSE® Linux Enterprise Server. The SUSE Linux Enterprise Server Subscription with Expanded Support program includes a three-year subscription to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server that provides technical support for a customer's existing Linux deployments for up to two years while they make the transition to SUSE Linux Enterprise.

The new program is in response to growing customer demand for help as they make the strategic decision to transition their data center Linux infrastructure from existing third-party distributions, such as Red Hat* Enterprise Linux and CentOS, to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. Many times, customers who want to move between platforms are constrained by factors such as IT resource limitations, application migration scheduling and training costs, which means they need time to make an orderly transition. In response to these challenges, Novell is providing technical support for a customer's existing Linux environment and is also delivering training and tools to ensure the transition to the SUSE Linux Enterprise platform is smooth and successful.

Economic Crisis (Intel's Fourth-Quarter Business Below Expectations)

Intel's Fourth-Quarter Business Below Expectations

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov. 12, 2008 - Intel Corporation today announced that fourth-quarter business will be below the company's previous outlook. The company now expects fourth-quarter revenue to be $9 billion, plus or minus $300 million, lower than the previous expectation of between $10.1 billion and $10.9 billion. Revenue is being affected by significantly weaker than expected demand in all geographies and market segments. In addition, the PC supply chain is aggressively reducing component inventories.

The company's expectation for fourth-quarter gross margin is now 55 percent plus or minus a couple of points, lower than the previous expectation of 59 percent plus or minus a couple of points, primarily due to lower revenue and other charges associated with the weaker-than-expected demand environment. Spending (R&D plus MG&A) is expected to be approximately $2.8 billion in the fourth quarter, lower than the previous expectation of approximately $2.9 billion, primarily due to lower revenue- and profit-related spending. For the full year, spending is expected to be approximately $11.4 billion, lower than the previous expectation of approximately $11.5 billion.

All other expectations are unchanged.

Status of Business Outlook

Today's announcement replaces the update previously scheduled for Dec. 4. From the close of business on Nov. 28 until publication of the company's fourth quarter results on Jan. 15, 2009, Intel will observe a "Quiet Period" during which the Business Outlook disclosed in the company's press releases and filings with the SEC should be considered to be historical, speaking as of prior to the Quiet Period only and not subject to an update by the company.

The above statements and any others in this document that refer to plans and expectations for the fourth quarter, the year and the future are forward-looking statements that involve a number of risks and uncertainties. This weekend i went to KL for window shopping.. And just spent out around RM500++.. damm why so much... hahaha.. I bought 2 Padini shirt (long sleeve), and 1 pant.., RM 50 for Touch n Go. I think every month i must buy at least 2 set of Casual dress. I need more...

I also wasted up my money for drink.. hahaha.. on Starbucks and Black Forest from Coffee Bean

I went to Kinokuniya also.. looking for the UNIX book.. but dont have it.. i need the HP UX... But i found the Novell original material for courses 3078 .. to expensive RM5XX.. forget the actual price already.... Wanna buy the Linux Magazine but.. all overthere is the last month edition..

Who gonna buy me this one??????

2nd Update.. as Pencacai Linux

1ST week at HP a little bit boring for me… Why? Because I didn’t start anything yet.. Only a few thing only I just know.. Why so late? Because we only have the limited Workstation.. My team only have the 3 Workstation and we need to share it out.. 12 member in my team.. we use the same pc.. we got 4 shift.. so all the Workstation is fully utilized by every time… 3 member times 4 shift equal to 12…

Early 2010 HP will transfer to the new campus @ cyberjaya.. Maybe on that time we no need to share the workstation anymore.. But that I’m still there on that times… HuHu… don’t know yet.. I got the chance to converted to the HP permanent staff.. I will go for it…

I this week also I already feel the good environment working here.. Never saw any issues or the bad style that show by the team member… They very nice and good person. But until today I don’t get my temporary badge yet.. So difficult to me.. even go to toilet also very difficult. Need to borrow other member badge or.. Must be escorted by someone hahahaha..

I really energetic to start my job.. I need to On Job Training first… The training material is private.. Can’t be download and can’t bring home also.. Must keep it on the share drive only.. That good because we have different of customer… so it Private and Confidential Issues …

Here I can’t find the hot CHICKS hahahaha.. where are they hiding..

How my life will move on during this couple of month / year.. I will start working on shifting rotation 4days work and 3 days rest / 3 days works and 4 days rest … Yes that means.. Every day I must work for 12 hours. Then go back just sleep and wake up on next morning or evening to work again.

I will update my knowledge about the UNIX administration. Seriously I never have any server experience before, 0 % . But I already attend the NCLP Course & Linux Server Administration Course before. So I have a little bit knowledge about that..

Yesterday I went to Cyberjaya for the induction. The funniest things I only the guy that wear jeans n tshirt hahaha… I never know the company dress code. Back to Intel I just wear the jeans n tshirt every day haha…no dress code in Intel… At there are around 5 guys including me.. the other 4 guy are Windows people…and I the only UNIX people over there(wearing the jeans n tshirt). Start from today I must wear the casual dress to work.. except on Friday.. can wear jeans..but must wear tshirt with color. I feel like in school already.. But this is the rules.. every employee should follow the rules.. u can’t break it.. Only Michael Scolfield can do that… So I will identify the business environment in my new working place –HP.. You should show you attitude and the corporate image to other. That the policies… Did you all meet your Managing Director before.. Yes I do today.. We went to the office tour.. and meet up the Managing Director.. He just can stop his meeting for a while… just too meet us.. He is the nice person..He also give us some motivation about the jobs and our career path after 1 or 2 year.. What should you do after that…? YES I need to take this opportunity as my ticket to fly….

Why I should do in my rest day.. Maybe on standby… If not.. What I must do…?

The first thing is study.. Learn more about UNIX.. Oh.. I forget about my NCLP exam again… I must sit it on 28… If don’t have leave on that day I will postpone again.. I need my working schedule now.. Plz… Currently I already have the 3 modules on UNIX SA & Networking. Yes time to learn something new..

That I should enjoy more… Yes I need it… I need to enjoy with my new jobs.. And spent more time with friends.. Do a lot of activity.. I’m in KL lol…not Kulim look the death town hahaha… I think I should be a little bit boring coz I don’t have any special Girl Friend… A little bit jaded.. I should look for it…? That I’m right… I no need to care about the other filling … also no need take about her… haha make my life enjoy and heaven huhuhu…I need to fulfill my life a lot of activity now (clubbing.. hahaha no way.. I’m not the smoker and drinker.. no need liquor on cigarettes).. I need to archive something that more and more better than now.. What that I doing last time let it go… Looking forward… We can’t get all that in the same time.. at least one in the particular times..

I will update the second part of my life in new workplace at HP later…

Certification - it the best choice for Linux geek

Today I got the Linux Format Magazine (LXF – October). On the top of cover got the “HOT TOPIC” = $$$$ Cash for knowledge - Get your Linux skills certified and walk into a dream job.. This what I’m doing right now.. Get more certs and earn more… and get the jobs that you like.

Some paragraphs that I copied from that magazine.

“All you need to do is get certifications-something that a potential employer will recognize on you CV.”

“Professional training schemes cost professional amounts of money, and if you’re lucky, this sum will be footed by our employer. Training is expensive, but that’s because the rewards are usually worth the effort in term of better pay and job satisfaction” Source LFX

For me the money is not the problem for the company… If employer wants the quality of services they should send the employee for the training… Hands on training.. No online material or eBook …Employee also can gain more skill/knowledge... it will represent the quality services for the employer...But I think it will work for the MSC/MNC status company. How about the local company that not have this status.. But make more profit... They should send also… Employer should take care of every employee.. Don’t make your employee leave if they have the skill that required for that job. To find the Linux people is not easy…trust me.. where to find this geek people…where are they.. all are in HP/IBM..hahaha

Last time when I attend the Novell Certified Linux Professional Course my instructor told me that NCLE more difficult than the RHCE.. When I do the comparison yes it true… but RHCT more difficult than the NCLP... But got the certain part that more difficult in NCLP is syslog-ng…. But now I can understand the concept of syslog-ng already..Thanks to my instructor…

But for future I don’t know yet.. I will go to Linux Certification (NCLE) or HP CSA (Because my new post is UNIX...) I think I should go to UNIX… this is suitable for me… Let me feel first...How the UNIX life…. Maybe I also can learn more about UNIX.. I will support SERVER... Server…no more Motherboard Certification... This experience very2 valuable for my future…

If you’re Linux User/ g33k / 1337 the certification is important.. You will specialized in the UNIX/Linux field… no more MISC stuff to be done… for sure no more windows….

My Stuck,,,Weekend

On the weekend I went to KL to take my offer letter and sign the agreement. I went three via train (KTMB Express Langkawi).. (This is the last time I take the train) .. damm the train very slow… I took the bed seat…but I can’t sleep coz the air cond… I feel warn n hot… I reach at KL Central around 7am.. I should arrived on 520am… Then on Sunday I hang out with my friend… we meet up @ KL Central...i’m sure that they will came late..hahaha… I arrived sharp at 10.. Make the phone call to wan & adib…..still sleep… huhuhuhuhu..

I think better take my breakfast first… I take Nasi Lemak Rendang Ayam + Fresh orange… I open up my lappy and check my mail.. and Friendster.. also some favorite site like linuxtoday.com . They wan and adib arrived at 11++.. we went to KLCC.. to meet Khairul..also fairuz and faizin…Then adib feel hungry like Somalia people..went to Secret Recipe to eat again.. then later Khairul coming.. we going to Kinokuniya… I’m looking some UNIX stuff..(HP-UX).. then later Fairuz (sarjan) & faizin (faizal hussein) arrived.. then we going to Burger King…(makan lagi…) I treat them.. coz they still student (they said that ..who has work need to treat us hahaha..…no man…) Then we went out got a lot of chatting, smoking (I’m not smoker k)… Until we feel bored.. we went back to cinema and watch eagle eye….

When I going to Cyberjaya to take my offer later.. I cant found the office…then I just cross the another road.. yes. Their office (MSC Status Company) is beside IBM… I like the interior design on my company office. They got the jungle/tropical design…the small garden very nice.. I like to work inside that building.. a lot of cute girl. But I cant find any malay over there…all look like the foreign.. India,US.. … next week on 3^rd November I will be in the induction from 10am at cyber.. And the next day I will go to HP tower to start my training.. first 2 weeks maybe on normal hours..but next 2 weeks.. I will work on shift rotation 8am-8pm / 8pm -8am.. 4 working days and 3 rest day..i;m sure that no leave on weekend.. hahaha…. Oh no….. Yes…now I thinking that I can work at Cyberjaya… it quite near to Ampang… and also I got MC yesterday… * don’t do to much during your holiday…later u will get sick and tired…

Ah damm.. yesterday i make the phone call to the NCLP exam centre @ CSA to postpone my exam coz i think i unable to take the exam on that date. My time to tight.. how to sit the exam.. i need to rushing... then need to take my offer later... then going back at late night...and next day need to work again... damm... I'm have give 150% preparation for this exam. I'm ready to take it..but i need time.. i think no need to rush to get this exam ASAP.. because i got the new job at KL. so its easy to me to schedule the exam and sit the exam.

Solution for e1000e

Remember on my previous post regarding the e1000e driver on linux the solution is disable the CONFIG_DYNAMIC_FTRACE. I got the info from LKML i hope that later no more problem like this because it will break all the hardware. Here i cut out the articles that post by Steven Rostedt

While debugging the e1000e corruption bug with Intel, we discovered
today that the dynamic ftrace code in mainline is the likely source of
this bug.

For the stable kernel we are providing the only viable fix patch: labeling
CONFIG_DYNAMIC_FTRACE as broken. (see the patch below)

We will follow up with a backport patch that contains the fixes. But since
the fixes are not a one liner, the safest approach for now is to
disable the code in question.

The cause of the bug is due to the way the current code in mainline
handles dynamic ftrace.  When dynamic ftrace is turned on, it also
turns on CONFIG_FTRACE which enables the -pg config in gcc that places
a call to mcount at every function call. With just CONFIG_FTRACE this
causes a noticeable overhead.  CONFIG_DYNAMIC_FTRACE works to ease this
overhead by dynamically updating the mcount call sites into nops.

The problem arises when we trace functions and modules are unloaded.
The first time a function is called, it will call mcount and the mcount
call will call ftrace_record_ip. This records the calling site and
stores it in a preallocated hash table. Later on a daemon will
wake up and call kstop_machine and convert any mcount callers into
nops.

The evolution of this code first tried to do this without the kstop_machine
and used cmpxchg to update the callers as they were called. But I
was informed that this is dangerous to do on SMP machines if another
CPU is running that same code. The solution was to do this with
kstop_machine.

We still used cmpxchg to test if the code that we are modifying is
indeed code that we expect to be before updating it - as a final
line of defense.

But on 32bit machines, ioremapped memory and modules share the same
address space. When a module would load its code into memory and execute
some code, that would register the function.

On module unload, ftrace incorrectly did not zap these functions from
its hash (this was the bug). The cmpxchg could have saved us in most
cases (via luck) - but with ioremap-ed memory that was exactly the wrong
thing to do - the results of cmpxchg on device memory are undefined.
(and will likely result in a write)

The pending .28 ftrace tree does not have this bug anymore, as a general push
towards more robustness of code patching, this is done differently: we do not
use cmpxchg and we do a WARN_ON and turn the tracer off if anything deviates
from its expected state. Furthermore, patch sites are statically identified
during build time so there's no runtime discovery of dynamic code areas
anymore, and no room for code unmaps to cause the hash to become out of date.

We believe the fragility of dynamic patching has been sufficiently
addressed in the development code via the static patching method, but further
suggestions to make it more robust are welcome.

Currently I got the new Vacancy offer from other company. The post is Technical Consultant (Unix Administrator Server Support Engr – Level 1) . Need to support the HP UX Server, but maybe I need to support some other Linux/Unix Distro. I hope that I will get involved in SLES server. I need the SLES experience more coz I willing to take my NCLP...on this October. My newest employer wants me to start on 3^rd November. How should I do?

My current company need at least 45 days noticed…oh dam… Now I can send the 2 weeks noticed only… That my newest company willing to pay my current company to get me inside. I’m in dilemma now…ohh….what should I do...Let them deal about me? … I’m quite sad lol.because my next project is ESX.. I want it… I want to learn a lot about ESX... We are waiting for the hardware only… (Server,Storage,Router,Rack,etc). Currently I already up the temporary server using the ESX 3. I love Virtualization / Cluster quite good if I have that experience on it.

The best solution is i must quit from current company to the new post hahaha... i'm happy now... i make the correct dessicion.. bcoz a lot of reason .. i dont like politic at office...

Who is this guy?

Greg Kroah-Hartman is a Linux kernel hacker. He is the current Linux kernel maintainer for the USB, driver core, debugfs, kref, kobject, and the sysfs kernel subsystems. He is also the maintainer of the linux-hotplug and created the udev projects. Additionally, he helps to maintain the Gentoo Linux packages for these programs, and helps with the kernel package. He works for Novell in the SUSE Labs division. He is currently working full time on the Linux Driver Project.^[1]

He is a co-author of "Linux Device Drivers, 3rd Edition"^[2] and author of "Linux Kernel in a Nutshell",^[3] and used to be a contributing editor for Linux Journal. He also contributes articles to LWN.net, the news computing site.

Kroah-Hartman frequently helps in the documentation of the kernel and driver development through talks^[4]^[5] and tutorials.^[6]^[7] In 2006, he released a CD image of material to introduce a programmer to working on Linux device driver development.^[8]

Warning for the e1000e driver on Intel NIC.. Who using the chip below plz dont install Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 6, SLES 11.1 BETA, OpenSuse 11.1 Beta. It will make the physical damage on the NIC chip. Beware of this kernel 2.6.27

Yes I already register for this exam and scheduled in on October 2008. I hope that the instructor and the exam center can handle the exam on that time. I left than 1 month to do some revision. After this i can hold my first Pro Certificate. NCLP then try get the NCLE. I wish that i can pass it with the higher mark.

NVIDIA the largest company that build the GPU in world announce that the want to do the workforce reduction around of 360 position that equal to 6.5% of their employee worldwide.

SANTA CLARA, CA—SEPTEMBER 18, 2008—NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA) today announced a workforce reduction to allow for continued investment in strategic growth areas. As a result, NVIDIA expects to eliminate approximately 360 positions worldwide, or about 6.5 percent of the Company’s global workforce. The reduction is expected to be completed by the end of the third quarter of fiscal 2009 ending October 26, 2008. NVIDIA will provide employees affected by this reduction with severance packages, counseling, and job placement services.

"Our action today is difficult, but necessary considering current business realities. Despite our reduction, we will continue to invest in selective high-growth opportunities like our revolutionary CUDA parallel computing technology and our Tegra mobile single-chip computer," said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO of NVIDIA. "We are taking fast action to enhance our competitive position and restore our financial performance. All of us at NVIDIA are determined to emerge from these challenges an even stronger company."

The Company expects to record restructuring-related charges of approximately $7 million to $10 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2009 in connection with the reduction. These pre-tax charges are comprised of severance and related expenses and are expected to be charged primarily against NVIDIA’s operating expenses.
