We attended the event this past week that was held at Green Spaces and we can't wait to attend more future events from these organizers. The turnout was great, the panelists had a wealth of knowledge and experience that they shared with everyone and we had a chance to chat with them afterwards. Here are a few faces from the evening.

Neuaura Designer Launching an Eco-Friendly Line of Ballerinas
November 8, 2011 - Here is a pleasant surprise for eco-friendly shoe lovers. Neuaura is introducing a new brand called Reneu!
Reneu is an eco-friendly footwear brand consisting of ballerinas that are casual and comfortable. Arti Upadhyay, the founder of Neuaura, was inspired to start Reneu because she wanted an easy to carry travel shoe that was eco-friendly and comfortable yet still had style and flair.
Upadhyay says, "I travel so much and I walk a lot every day so I wanted a comfortable travel shoe that was good for the planet, good for my feet and that would fit easily into my handbag.”
For the first season, the line consists of 2 ballerina styles in multiple colors made of eco-friendly materials such as hemp, organic cotton canvas and recycled materials. The footbed is made of anti-microbial molded memory foam and these adorable shoes also come with a cotton canvas travel bag. The design of the shoes is casual and classic with a contemporary shape that compliments the feet.
“When creating the line I decided to have a ballerina as the initial design because the silhouette can easily be paired with any outfit and be made as a comfort shoe” says Upadhyay. “I also wanted the shoes to be foldable so that they are easy to carry around.”
Upadhyay is also the designer of Neuaura which is an eco-conscious vegan footwear brand that focuses on women’s contemporary and casual styles. For Spring 2012, Upadhyay really has drawn inspiration from prints and colors on canvas and has creatively combined them with faux nubuck, laser cut materials, and faux suede resulting in a line that speaks “eco-chic”.
“This season more than ever I was really inspired by washed canvas, floral prints, raffia, cork and wanted to find a way to uniquely combine them with novelty and laser cut materials”, she says. “I wanted the underlying tone of the collection to feel earthy yet still be city-chic.”
Both Neuaura and Reneu brands are part of Neu Aura, Inc. which is committed to bringing quality, unique footwear that is animal free and eco-friendly. They do their best to ensure that their manufacturing process and materials leave minimal impact on the planet. Neu Aura, Inc has a giving back policy. Volunteering at the Liberty Humane Society

I started volunteering at the Liberty Humane Society in Jersey City, NJ. I have always wanted to volunteer at a shelter and I found a way to make time for it. The shelter does not euthanize for space (thank god!). I wouldn't be able to handle that.
I feel really sorry for these animals as many of them were victims of abuse and neglect and their owners just dumped them when they could no longer take care of them. I feel even more sad for the very abused pit bulls as for some of them it will take a special person to adopt them.
This shelter is full of employees and volunteers that really love these animals so I am looking forward to a fulfilling experience and hopefully I can make some impact on the animals and the people I interact with. The shelter is located right next to Liberty State Park so there's nothing more peaceful than taking a walk in the park with a dog. (and hopefully they have their next walk soon as many of them get anxious in the cage).

Event at the Arterie Boutique / Duckie Shoes in Montreal, Quebec CANADA

We had a wonderful event showcasing our Fall/Winter boots to Duckie Shoes customers (aka Arterie Boutique) in Montreal, Quebec. Winters in Montreal are really brutal so shoppers need boots that can withstand harsh winter weather including rain, snow, sleet (and salted roads and sidewalks) and of course the boots have to look great too!

I loved hearing feedback and getting a better understanding what consumers in Montreal look for when buying winter boots. As a designer it really helps me make improvements where necessary.

Can't have a vegan event without vegan treats and wine!

I attended a trend seminar in Asia earlier this year. A European trend forecasting company held the seminar and said that humor in shoes was going to be the trend for next season (Spring 12). Their slideshow included shoes with stuffed animals hanging off of it...very outrageous silly silhouettes. Well, whoever created these shoes is really following the humor trend for footwear! Some of these area really bizarre but nonetheless entertaining. I would love to see these on women in business suits.

Eco Fashion Event at Carbon DC - Sept 23, 2011

The eco fashion event at Carbon brought in some extraordinary individuals from the Ocean Foundation and The Humane Society of the United States. I had the chance to speak with them to learn about some of their work.

David Guggenheim, who calls himself the Ocean Doctor, is working on a coral reef project in Cuba. The coral reefs in Cuba have remained virtually untouched, unspoiled and they are finding a way to understand why and how and replicate this in other parts of the world where the coral reefs are endangered. His work will be featured on 60 Minutes with Anderson Cooper in a few weeks.

I met Heather Sullivan of the Humane Society for the second time and this time I was able to ask her a lot more questions about her work with the Humane Soceity. Heather told me how they coordinate interventions with animal rescue teams on issues like puppy mills. Once the puppies are rescued the Humane Society work really hard to help get the puppies adopted or find shelters for them. The Humane Society also allows employees to bring their pet to work. How cool?!

And the person who brought everyone together on this very special evening was Katherine of Carbon. She worked for the government for many years until she decided to follow her dream of owning an eco-friendly boutique. I can tell from the people that attended the event, the paintings on the walls and the brands that she carries that Carbon stands behind a great cause.

The eco-fashion show at Carbon in Washington DC, on Sept 23rd, was a fun filled evening. All the models walked down the runway in either the black patent Nashira style, the Kite shoe in either black or wine or Sayan pump, from our newest collection. Every style was paired with unique eco-friendly clothes from A.D.O. clothing. All the money raised that evening was donated to the Ocean Foundation.

Lupani School - Sekute Community

Here is some news about one of the organizations, AWF, that we are donating to this year.
In partnership with the Sekute Community Development Trust, AWF has rebuilt the area's only primary school. Once a dilapidated mud structure with thatched walls and a collapsing roof, the Lupani School has been transformed into a modern facility with six classrooms, several offices, and new teacher housing. AWF and the Trust built the school and provided needed furniture and amenities. For its part, the Zambian government will pay the teachers' salaries and maintain the school's facilities. This way, children will have a safe, well-equipped place to learn in an environment sustained through partnership. Families, in turn, will have a stake in the success of programs that conserve wildlife.

Just as the people of the Sekute Chiefdom are investing in conservation, AWF is investing in the people of the area, and helping them to build a better future. Please consider us in your charitable giving to allow other students in Africa the same chance at a brighter future.

Each season we pick a theme to name our shoes after and we try to stick to a theme that is related to nature or the universe at large. This season we decided to have a galactic theme and named all of our styles after stars in the sky. This was somewhat of a challenge as there were some names that were really long and complicated so we had to stick to the ones that were easy to pronounce and write. As you may notice, most of the names are Arabic derived as the names originated from the people who lived in the Arabian Peninsula thousands years ago. (It is so fascinating how advanced they were at that time - that's a whole different discussion!)

I am getting more serious about my yoga practice as it helps me stay healthy, connected and focused. I love the way I feel when I practice yoga regularly and now that I am committed, there's no turning back!
For the past several months I have been attending Om Factory in NYC. I highly recommend this school as the instructors are well versed and have truly excelled in their practice. I actually recommend taking classes with the different instructors as each has their own style to improve your practice. I love that the instructors constantly walk around the room to help each person either correct their posture or go deeper into it. The atmosphere in the studio is really warm and welcoming. Really happy that I found this awesome studio.
