Christian Stöcker, stellvertretender Ressortleiter der Netzwelt bei Spiegel Online, hat in sieben Thesen auf einem Forum des Branchenverbands Bitkom eingängig und stringent erklärt, warum ein Menschenfeind sein muss, wer das Internet für überwiegend schädlich hält.

De facto aber tut das Internet das gleiche wie jedes neue Informations- und Kommunikationsmedium seit Erfindung der Keilschrift - es nimmt mehr Zeit, Aufmerksamkeit und damit Energie in Anspruch, als es freisetzt.

Stimmt. Warum Facebook Gruppierungen so vernachlässigt, ist mir ein Rätsel. Ist es doch ein wichtiges Feature, weil damit Informationen und so die Nutzung des Dienstes organisiert werden kann. Vielleicht ist es neben den Grundfunktionen das wichtigste Feature überhaupt.

- “They put stuff out there, as gifts. Great content, great ideas, great insights, great personal connection. By giving so much of themselves, for free, every day, they build up huge surpluses of goodwill, so when you’re finally in the market for something they’re selling (and they’re ALL selling something, trust me), they’re first on your list.”

- “Warum gibt es eigentlich immer noch kein wirkliches Hauptstadt-Blog, kein Lokalblog für die Metropolregion Hamburg, kein Wirtschaftsblog, das täglich die Wirtschaftswelt beleuchtet?”

- “If by save you mean, “what will keep things just as they are?” then the answer is nothing will. It’s over.”

Facebook could make some interface changes that would make this news-reader model all the easier, but this use case is quite compelling already. Facebook will never replace a dedicated RSS reader (or 5) for serious professional use but the fact is that the vast majority of people online have not begun to take advantage of the powerful subscription options that the web now allows. Online syndication has huge disruptive potential, not the least of which is access to larger audiences for smaller voices than they’ve ever been able to access before.

Letztlich ist das nur die Weiterentwicklung des Abonnement-Prinzips weg vom offenen RSS/Atom hin zu übergelagerten, in sich geschlosseneren Systemen wie man es bereits bei Twitter sieht. Da diese in der Regel RSS-getrieben sind (und nicht über proprietäre APIs für Publisher etwa laufen), werden RSS und Atom bestehen bleiben - und mit ihnen die weitaus flexibleren, traditionellen Feedreader.

Letzten Endes scheint das alles auf eine Ausdifferenzierung des Marktes hinauszulaufen. Das “Einfacher aber weniger” für die Massen kommt mit Facebook. Und Kirkpatrick hat natürlich recht: Größeres Publikum ist gut für das Online-Ökosystem der Nischenpublisher.

Randbeobachtung: Gleichzeitig bekommt jede Publikation mit dem Like-Feature bei jedem Eintrag ein eigenes, kleines Digg auf seiner Fanpage. Nicht zu unterschätzen.

Natürlich ist das alles noch recht primitiv und wird sicher weiter ausgebaut.

Facebook wird durch diese Möglichkeiten und durch seine schiere Größe mittelfristig sehr wichtig für (Online-)Medien werden.

Bleibt nur noch die Frage, wann deutsche Verlage Fanpages für ihre Publikationen anlegen und dann anschließend dafür Leistungsschutzrechte von Facebook verlangen.

So entstehen sie dann die “führenden Köpfe”, die “Vordenker” und “Gurus”, die “angesehenen Experten” und “Halb-Götter”. Gern bezeichnen Redaktionen so etwas als “hoch einfliegen”.”

- “What I think iPhone vs. Android really looks like is Mac vs. PC TODAY rather than ten years ago. Today Apple produces high-functioning tightly-integrated products that people really like. But you are limited to those devices Apple chooses to produce. If you want a netbook, you can’t buy one from Apple. You want a phone with a physical Keyboard? Apple isn’t going to help you. I think ten years from now there are more Android devices than iPhoneOS devices. Probably a lot more. But I don’t think that means that Apple will have “lost”.”

• Wo wird die Abgabe eingesammelt?
• Was wird die Bemessungsgrundlage der Ausschüttung?
• Wer wird ausschüttungsberechtigt?
• Wie hoch werden die Verwaltungskosten sein?
• usw.

All das scheint keine oder eine nur untergeordnete Rolle zu spielen. Beispielhaft Peter Glaser in einem Beitrag für Deutschlandradio Kultur:

Solche Pauschalvergütungen sind im Übrigen nichts Neues. Mit Verwertungsgesellschaften wie der GEMA oder der VG Wort sind Erfahrung und Infrastruktur dafür längst vorhanden. Auch zur Erhebung der Downloads - also was wie oft heruntergeladen wurde - gibt es inzwischen von spezialisierten Unternehmen wie BigChampagne eine Reihe von Verfahren. Von dieser neuen Messweise würden übrigens viel mehr Urheber profitieren als bisher.

Zum einen darf grundsätzlich bezweifelt werden, dass der gesamten(!) Musikbranche eine weitere Verwertungsgesellschaft wie die GEMA wirklich helfen wird. Zum anderen gibt es schwerwiegende Argumente gegen diese vermeintlich offensichtliche Lösung der Downloaderhebung als Bemessungsgrundlage, über die ich unter anderem im Juni letzten Jahres auf netzwertig.com ausführlich schrieb:

Downloads als Grundlage: Die Idee, Downloads als Bemessungsgrundlage nehmen zu können, basiert auf der irrigen Annahme, man könne einen kostenlosen Download mit dem Kauf eines Tonträgers gleichsetzen. Da der Download dem Konsumenten nichts kostet, führt das zu unzähligen Problemen:
Ich kann Musik runterladen, die ich nie anhöre also auch nie konsumiere. Was wird dadurch möglich:
-Industrielle Manipulation durch die großen Majorlabels
-Mittels Botnet aufgesetzte verteilte Downloads von ‘pfiffigen’ Indie-Musikern
-Aktivisten, die nicht möchten, dass Britney Spears und co. XY vom Kuchen bekommen, veranstalten Aktionen, wie etwas alle Werke aller Künstler herunterzuladen, deren Name mit F beginnt.
-Künstler bieten nur Bundle-Downloads an, welche die Gesamtverbreitung ihrer Werke künstlich hochtreibt (Ich will nur Album 08/15, muss aber die drei vorhergehenden als ZIP-Datei mit herunterladen.)
-Um das eigene Idol zu unterstützen, kann man Freeware-Programme nutzen, welche automatisch nach Ablauf einer wie auch immer gearteten Datenspeicherung, die bereits heruntergeladenen Werke ein weiteres Mal herunterlädt und anschließend sofort wieder löscht. (Das Gleiche gilt natürlich in noch weit stärkerem Maße für jedes Szenario, in dem Downloaddaten nicht für einen bestimmten Zeitraum gespeichert werden)
-usw. usf.
Fazit: Da kostenlose Downloads keine mit Kosten verbundene Entscheidung darstellen, sind sie ungeeignet zur Messung der Nutzung und damit völlig ungeeignet als Ausgangsbasis für eine Bemessungsgrundlage.

Ich bin für die Legalisierung dessen, was nahezu jeder Jugendliche heute macht, weil es für ihn möglich ist (warum ist es möglich: weil für keinen Beteiligten zusätzliche Kosten anfallen). Ich bin für das Erkunden neuer Geschäftsmodelle in der Musikbranche und andere durch die digitale Disruption betroffenen Branchen. Ich bin nicht dafür, Hals über Kopf ein Verwaltungsmonstrum einzuführen, von dem eben nicht klar ist, ob es tatsächlich denen helfen wird, denen es helfen soll. Glaser schreibt:

“Es geht”, sagt der Mediensoziologe Volker Grassmuck, “gar nicht mehr um das Ob einer Flatrate, sondern nur noch um die Frage, wie und zu wessen Gunsten.”

Und genau diese Fragen werden einfach nicht diskutiert.

Es ist wirklich bemerkenswert, wie wenig die Befürworter der Kulturflatrate zu Diskussionen bereit zu sein scheinen, die über das Niveau von 2003 hinausgehen.

Kulturflatrate: Pro und Contra

- “wer an die offenheit glaubt, der muss auch an ihre konkurrenzfähigkeit in einem milieu glauben, in dem es auch geschlossene systeme gibt.”

Die ‘Offenheit’ kann an verschiedenen Stellen der Wertschöpfungskette schwächer oder stärker ausfallen und von da andere Ebenen beeinflussen. Aktuell sieht es so aus, als werden wir uns zumindest bei der Mehrzahl der Endgeräte mittel- bis langfristig zu einer eher schwach ausgeprägten Offenheit bewegen. Allerding ist es richtig, es als Unsinn anzusehen, jetzt von einem Endgame zu reden.

- “Unlike Wordpress.com, Buytaert tells me, Drupal Gardens isn’t really meant for individuals looking to set up their own blog as much as it is aimed to help organizations and small businesses set up a Drupal environment with multi-user blogging features, social integration, forums, custom content types, and so on.”

- “The big news is that FarmVille will reportedly be implementing Facebook Credits. While we’ve been hearing for a year-and-a-half that the Credits system was about to be ‘released’, this is probably the biggest real news so far. Farmville will not use Credits exclusively, but a “Pay with Facebook” button will be located beside the existing payment service offers, allowing you to buy Farmville Coins.”

Demnach sollen den Rechteinhabern (nicht den Urhebern!) durch Verletzungen von Imaterialgüterrechten 200 bis 250 Milliarden Dollar an Einnahmen verloren gehen und es würden 750.000 Jobs gefährdet. Das Problem an den Zahlen ist nicht allein, dass nicht klar ist, worauf sie sich beziehen. Gehen diese Jobs und diese Einnahmen pro Jahr verloren? Oder kumulativ? Über welchen Zeitraum?

Sondern dass bislang auch unklar blieb, wie diese Zahlen zustande kamen. Wer hat sie erhoben? Mit welcher Methode?

[..]nichts ist dran an den Zahlen. Ausgedacht, weitererzählt, zitiert, dann wieder zitiert, dann nochmal zitiert, und schon hat man Quelle über Quelle, auf die man sich berufen kann – völlig unabhängig davon, dass es nie eine belastbare Aussage gab.

[..] Ich gehe (weiterhin) davon aus, dass alles, was von dieser Industrie kommt, als falsch betrachtet werden muss, bis das Gegenteil bewiesen ist.

Matthias Spielkamp verweist auf einen lesenswerten Artikel auf Ars Technica zum Thema vom Oktober 2008, in dem beispielhaft der Umgang mit Scheinfakten aufgezeigt wird:

both numbers are seemingly decades old, gaining a patina of currency and credibility by virtue of having been laundered through a relay race of respectable sources, even as their origin recedes into the mists. That’s especially significant, because these numbers are always invoked as proof that the piracy problem is still dire—that everything we’ve done to step up international enforcement of intellectual property laws has been in vain. Soundcloud macht es genau richtig: Die richtigen Andockstellen im Netz finden und dann verknüpfen. Man vergleiche das mit den anderen deutschen Startups, deren Gründer glauben, sie müssten immer das Rad komplett neu erfinden.
