How do you recharge?

Dealing with diabetic neuropathy can be approached in a number of different ways.

There are two kinds of people. Those who get energy from being around people and those who gain energy by being away from people.

Most in my family are the more recluse kind. We prefer to be on our own, not in a crowd.

Not that we’re not a crowd on our own – with 8 kids and 10 of us in the house (well, we’re down to 8 now) there’s always a bunch of us around.

Although my wife would be quick to point out how quiet it can get – everyone disappears into the woodwork when there are things to be done.

Seems like nobody’s at home at all when the kitchen is piled up to the ceiling with dishes or the laundry needs to be done.

We are all wired differently. We respond to social situations depending on our temperament.

The same is true when we face a health issue.

Do we treat the symptoms of the problem or look for the underlying cause?

Here’s the key – your body is constantly working to maintain optimum function. It varies multiple systems constantly to maintain the status quo.

Hormones adapt, blood pressure, blood sugar, kidney filtration – innumerable systems adapt continuously to keep things healthy and working right.

Until.

If you apply enough pressure to the systems through toxins, deficiencies, and stress – it just can’t keep up.

Pour pounds of glucose into the bloodstream over years and decades – and finally, the body is pushed beyond its capacity to adapt – type 2 diabetes.

Do the above until insulin levels rise well above normal – finally, the blood pressure gets too high and stays there.

Treating the symptoms is the mainstream approach to this. Take drugs to lower blood sugar, and take extra insulin to overcome the insulin resistance.

Naturally, if you already have high insulin levels, injecting more insulin makes that problem worse – and blood pressure rises even higher.

So then we take drugs that lower blood pressure.

Then eat more high-glucose foods, and take more insulin and blood pressure meds.

Or…

Or stand back and look for the cause of the problem.

Cut the carbs (glucose) from the diet, and watch insulin sensitivity rise and insulin levels fall, along with blood pressure and all the attached health problems.

It’s not rocket science. If you do everything you can to support your body’s health – it will improve. If you constantly challenge things with toxic foods – your health will get worse.

But we get to choose. Hide the symptoms, or heal.

When it comes to dealing with diabetic neuropathy, you know where I stand.

You. Can. Heal.

How do you eat an elephant?

It’s an age-old question with an age-old answer.

“One bite at a time.”

There’s a lot of wisdom in that answer.

It’s how we approach healing all modern degenerative diseases as well.

Type 2 diabetes and its partners are obesity, neuropathy, retinopathy and kidney disease; arthritis; hypertension – the list goes on.

When looking at diabetic neuropathy, it’s a pretty big elephant. How do you eat the elephant of neuropathy?

First, there’s the metabolic disease that has developed over decades that needs to be dealt with. And multiple nutrient deficiencies. And toxicities from drugs that are routinely prescribed. Plus, the blood flow issues. And on and on.

Take some vitamin D – that’s only one bite

Alpha lipoic acid – one bite

Cut out the high carbs and add more fat to your diet – 100 bites over 100 days of changing your diet and eating habits.

It can be overwhelming.

Getting the right bites

So I built NeuroWellness to help you eat the elephant of Neuropathy.

To clear the fog and help you see each step along the way.

And the fastest, least expensive way to get started taking those steps is the toolkit – which is available for a little while longer.

It’s going to come down soon. I’m changing things up and rewriting the book, so it won’t be available in its current form and at its current price. (It’s cheaper than a dinner out without dessert!)

So if you’re looking to heal diabetic neuropathy, this is your moment.

But there are some who shouldn’t invest. The toolkit won’t do you any good unless you watch the videos, read the book, and then do the work.

If that’s not your thing, no worries – eating elephants isn’t for everyone. But know this:

You. Can. Heal.

Dr. Cam

Here‘s how to get started healing when you’re ready….

How to stop diabetic neuropathy

Type 2 diabetes is an epidemic in the west. The massive numbers of diabetic, pre-diabetic, and what I refer to as pre-pre-diabetic people are ever increasing.

And the interesting thing is we’re being told to keep doing what we’ve been doing (eating at least 60g of carbs per meal). That way, we can keep getting what we’ve always got. But it’s not how to stop neuropathy, to be certain.

The Bible talks about the wide road that leads to destruction.

It seems the same story is true when it comes to health.

We can follow the easy (but wrong) answer – and take the drugs and follow the “low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet.” Cheer up, they said, things could get worse – so I cheered up, and sure enough – things got worse.

But there are always more and more drugs to hide the symptoms of what we’re doing to our bodies through our diets.

It just doesn’t seem smart to continuously eat foods that are toxic to our bodies and hope that someone will make a better antitoxin.

That’s the wide easy (but not very successful) path.

The narrow way

But what about those that follow the narrow way?

The ones who choose the more difficult path?

The ones who stop eating the foods that are toxic and add foods that help their bodies heal.

They are focused on how to stop neuropathy. They take a few supplements to make sure their bodies have sufficient nutrients for healing.

And they’d likely add some proven techniques like massage, light, and vibration.

The power of professional light systems to help nerves heal and grow is unprecedented. Study after study shows a massive boost to both blood flow, and nerve growth using light.

Healing neuropathy.

It won’t be simple.

It won’t be easy.

It’s not for everyone. But if you’re still reading, you’re probably among those looking for a better way.

No, there is no “miracle supplement” or “one weird trick.”

Just a twisty, rough path that will actually lead to healing.

The nice thing is that you get to choose your path.

Nobody can force you to drop the doughnuts and eat the roast beef or put away the margarine and get out the butter.

It’s a path you have to choose, and then walk.

But when you do, know this:

You. Can. Heal.

One thing your cardiologist will tell you to avoid is things fried in butter.

And steak.

Especially the fat from steak.

This is the standard advice given to anyone who is diabetic or has high cholesterol, blood pressure, insulin levels – Okay. It’s basically the standard advice.

Non-Standard Advice

But a new Harvard study flies in the face of the “standard” recommendations.

It followed 2029 people who chose to eat a “carnivore” diet.

This means they ate almost no:

Vegetables (starchy or non-starchy)

Legumes

Fruit

Grains

Sugar or honey

Breaded or fried fast-food meats

Chocolate

Candy or desserts

Instead eating primarily:

Ruminant meat (Beef, lamb, goat and venison)

Pork, chicken and eggs

Fish

Organ meat

Salt

Instant death by eating anything fried in butter

According to the health guidelines outlined in the food guide – most of these people should become ill, and die of heart disease quite quickly.

What motivated them to adopt this kind of diet?

78% said weight/body composition

74% said focus and energy

56% said allergy/skin/autoimmunity

52% said digestive health

And 11% said diabetes.

They ate this way for an average of 14 months.

And you may wonder what they found after eating this way for 14 months. Here’s what they experienced:

93% improved or resolved their body weight/obesity

93% improved or resolved hypertension

84% improved or resolved cardiovascular issues

98% improved or resolved diabetes and insulin resistance

97% improved or resolved gastrointestinal issues

89% improved or resolved autoimmune conditions

96% improved or resolved musculoskeletal issues

96% improved or resolved psychiatric symptoms

92% improved or resolved urologic issues

92% improved or resolved dermatologic issues.

Reversed type 2 diabetes?

Of particular importance to my readers, 90% discontinued or decreased insulin, 92% stopped insulin for type 2 diabetes altogether, 100% discontinued other diabetes injectables, and 84% discontinued oral diabetes medications.

This means that there is no drug that comes close to having the spectacular health outcomes that the carnivore diet provides. It looks like we should be eating steak fried in butter.

The majority of the results for those suffering from type 2 diabetes come from eliminating the high carbohydrate diet we all suffer from.

“But what about heart disease from all that fat?”

While LDL tended to increase, it raised HDL (good cholesterol) levels to optimal for most participants. Overall, 56% saw an improvement in their lipid panels, while only 19% saw them worsen. (And we could have a whole discussion on how useful lipid panels are when it comes to heart disease since 74% of heart attacks occur in people with normal LDL levels.)

Don’t take my word for it, though. Check out the study here.

Over the past decade, more and more information is guiding us away from the SAD (Standard American Diet) and toward cutting the carbs to improve health and extend life.

One more nail in the coffin of maintaining the status quo and eating the “diabetic diet.”

You. Can. Heal.

Dr. Cam

Here‘s how to get started healing when you’re ready….

There was a time when good hard work was celebrated. Lauded even.

Those with “dirty jobs” were the heroes. They didn’t shirk their duties, but stepped up and got ‘er done.

And while there are still plenty of hard-working, nose to the grindstone, people who keep things moving out there, there seems to be an increasing number of those who think they deserve everything for nothing.

It’s become a right to get things for free. I want free healthcare, college, groceries. I want to own nothing and be happy.

It’s a human right to own a Tesla

I want my health back. But only if it’s free.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there is no free lunch.

Most people already know this. If you’re getting something for “free”, somebody is paying for it. Oftentimes it’s you.

It stands to reason that those who are willing to put in the effort will get better results than those who wait for others to provide for them.

Not afraid of dirty jobs?

Tired of waiting around for the next diabetes drug to come along, many people are reclaiming their own health.

Putting on the walking shoes, throwing out the doughnuts, and switching to water instead of soda.

And it works, almost every time.

They are dropping pounds and pant sizes, gaining energy and muscle, and healing nerves. People watch their A1c drop into the normal range.

There’s no free health.

It’s free to keep getting worse though – you don’t have to make any changes or do any work. Just keep doing the same things, and you’ll get the same result.

But if you are willing to invest your time, effort, and invest in your health – you can heal.

Dr. Cam

Alpha what?

What on earth is that, and why should I spend my hard-earned cash on it?

Well, first of all, we need to understand despite what you may have heard, Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA) is not a treatment for neuropathy, diabetes, heart disease or pimples.

ALA helps your body produce energy from glucose, among other uses.

There are a few ways that your body produces energy. For example, it can burn fat or glucose or turn protein into glucose to burn.

There are two ways to burn glucose. First, there’s aerobic respiration, which leaves water and CO2. Alternatively, there’s anaerobic respiration that leaves behind waste products like lactic acid (the stuff that makes your muscles sore after you work them very hard.)

ALA is an essential cofactor in at least five enzyme systems in your body, including two in the Kreb’s cycle – a necessary part of the aerobic energy path.

Putting Alpha-Lipoic Acid simply

In simple terms, it is an essential compound that helps our cells produce energy from glucose. Without it, the cells switch to anaerobic energy production leaving behind lactic acid.

If you lack Alpha-Lipoic Acid, your body won’t burn sugar as efficiently and create more lactic acid.

Lactic acid is also problematic for causing “neurological symptoms” like neuropathy.

It’s a wise addition to any type 2 diabetes regimen simply because you want an ample supply to burn glucose and protect nerves. It’s also why some people see a fantastic improvement when taking it.

If you have been very deficient, it will undoubtedly contribute to poor glucose levels and nerve damage. Adding more ALA in these cases can make a huge difference.

If there is a minor deficiency, the results will be less dramatic. But it’s still wise to correct the problem to allow your body to work as efficiently as possible.

Just do this

It’s found in foods like red meat, and spinach, but to rapidly increase levels a quality ALA supplement is an essential addition for any diabetic and diabetic neuropathy sufferer. But I’m not going to blow sunshine up your skirt and tell you it’s the solution to all your problems. It is just one element of a system that heals neuropathy.

So when you take it, do so knowing it’s only part of the solution, not the whole answer.

To expect it to fix everything is a bit like expecting to make a delicious chocolate cake with only baking soda. You need to put all the ingredients in, mix it, and bake it properly before you have a cake. Just throwing a tsp of baking soda in the bowl isn’t going to cut it.

But luckily, there’s a recipe for healing.

Yes.

No Admittance:

Bilbo Baggins set up barriers to keep others out. He even had a sign on his gate that instructed, “No admittance except on party business.”

He enjoyed his privacy and didn’t want to deal with the many interlopers who would like to disrupt his day. (Especially those Sackville Baggins’s)

Barriers can be an excellent thing. They keep people safe near dangerous cliffs, prevent damage to precious historical pieces, and even prevent damage to your body’s cells.

Nature is filled with barriers.

They keep you healthy and allow your nerves to operate normally.

Letting the interlopers in.

So when barriers begin to break down or work improperly in your body, you can have some severe problems.

One of the most critical barriers of your cells is the cell membrane. Composed of fat (lipid), it provides the barrier that only allows the right things in and out through its doors: the membrane controls who is allowed to enter and when.

If that glucose molecule really is there on party business, and he brought his friend insulin along (because insulin has the keys to the house), then the door is opened to him.

No insulin, no entry.

Ideally, this great wall of protection around your cells is composed of Omega 3 fats. But for most of us today, there’s a problem.

The Problem

We don’t eat omega 3 fats anymore (unless we eat a lot of wild fish). This causes our cell membranes to use inferior omega 6 or 9 fats, leading to leaky barriers that allow the wrong things in or out.

The result is run-away inflammation that can cause damage to nerves, joints, muscles and blood vessels. (I know for a fact that when I don’t have enough omega 3, my joints get cranky)

So this means we all need to eat more wild (not farmed) fish. Wild meat works, too, as it is much higher in essential fats. And when that’s not possible (or desirable), we need to take a good quality omega 3 supplement.

When your body has the right building blocks, it can heal and grow properly.

Marvelous Mitochondria

One of my professors once told me, “It’s all about the mitochondria dummy!”

It’s true. Mitochondria are a fantastic organelle inside the cells of your body. They are the energy producers allowing the cells to function normally with plenty of energy.

When your nerve cells function properly, the mitochondria produce plenty of energy from ample blood flow and nutrients that your body supplies. This allows them to fire correctly and send the appropriate information to your brain.

Everything feels normal. Your feet can sense floor the floor and don’t burn and burn or tingle.

But when blood flow starts to slow, the nutrients slow down as well. As a result, the mitochondria can’t produce the energy your nerve cells need. This leads to malfunctions since the nerves don’t have the energy to fire normally.

Type two diabetes

Advancing type 2 diabetes causes loss of blood flow, especially to the areas farthest from the heart (Toes, feet, fingers and hands)

To add insult to injury, the loss of blood flow causes waste products and advanced glycation end products to build up in the nerves. Add toxic drugs or damaging high blood glucose levels, and you have a recipe for disaster.

As the mitochondria stop producing energy, the nerves begin to send abnormal signals that confuse the brain. Strange sensations like a “walking on bubble wrap” feeling, numbness, tingling, burning, and even shooting shocks fire from these unhappy nerves. Cold feet feel hot; hot feet feel cold.

Balance – especially in the dark begins to worsen.

Drugs is the answer. Now what’s the question?

And the mainstream answer to the problem? Drugs. Drugs that further block the strange sensations to make things “feel” better.

It’s a bit like treating an infection in your leg with Tylenol. It will reduce the pain and lower your fever – but the infection will still be raging. So it’s not a solution – it just makes things feel a bit better while your leg gets sicker.

This is the reason that neuropathy is progressive – the causes aren’t being addressed.

Fixing your mitochondria.

What your mitochondria need is a flood of oxygen, nutrients, and the elimination of toxins and toxic drugs. They need balanced blood sugar. (Coincidentally, the exact things I help you do here.)

Making these changes allows them to start cranking out energy into the nerve cells again. Energy your nerves use for healing and to begin sending the correct signals to the brain.

It’s really not rocket science – there is much you can do to help your mitochondria (and your nerves).

You. Can. Heal.

When walking hurts

Here’s a question for Dire Straits – “How do you do the walk of life when walking hurts?”

It was back in 1985 Dire Straits released their catchy hit song “Walk of Life.” (As I write this, I have the song in my head.)

There are so many aspects to our daily life that we take for granted. Up and down the stairs, standing in the kitchen cooking, around the store to get some groceries. At first, type 2 diabetes doesn’t really change these things.

You can run about and get the groceries, but you have to make a stop at the pharmacy for some drugs, too, now. No biggie. Problem solved.

Solved? Or is that a lie?

Of course, you know the problem isn’t solved – it’s just hidden for a while. A pharmaceutical cloak of magic. It allows you to eat plenty of glucose (carbohydrates) still.

So a few burgers, fries, pizzas, cakes and gallons of soda later, type 2 diabetes gets worse. And the collateral damage to nerves, eyes, and kidneys progresses too. High insulin levels combined with high blood glucose levels increase heart disease risk, blood pressure, and the number of prescribed drugs.

Then the tingle in the toes starts. “Oh, it happens to people with diabetes. Neuropathy is progressive. Better get used to your new normal.” And more drugs are prescribed. (It’s a bit of a pattern, isn’t it?)

Eventually, the tingle turns into numbness. And then your feet begin to scream at you – burning, tingling, shocks that shoot through them. As neuropathy progresses, even maintaining balance becomes more difficult.

Stopping the downward spiral.

And so you can’t even do the walk of life.

It’s a downward spiral that is only good for the pharmaceutical industry.

The reason? Drugs don’t heal.

“Are you saying drugs are bad? That a person should never take drugs?” No. There are natural times when drugs can do you a world of good and even save your life.

But to try to “manage” type 2 diabetes with drugs while continuing to do all the same things that caused it in the first place – not ideal.

Changing how you eat so you can reverse type 2 diabetes, restoring lost nutrients, and actively working to heal nerves, on the other hand, is the ticket out of this mess.

You. Can. Heal. And get back to doing the walk, the walk of life…

Dr. Cam.

Here‘s how to get started healing when you’re ready….

How the TV helps you drug the fish.

If your fish gets sick, do you run to the pharmacy and drug the fish? Or do you clean the tank first?

If you turn on the TV today, and you’ll be quickly told that drugs are the answer. The multi-billion-dollar drug companies have your best interests at heart and are working hard to save you from every disease on the planet.

This is brilliant marketing. Even the governments (who don’t get elected without help from these wealthy companies) support this idea.

Health comes from a bottle in your local pharmacy. Or an injection that will save us from every disease on the planet. “Take two of these and call me in the morning.”

But is our ticket to health really only found through the government and pharmaceutical companies? Is AstraZeneca the way to get to 100% function in the body?

Ancient idea

There is an age-old idea that the body is MADE to be healthy. This is because it constantly works to maintain itself in harmony with its environment, and given the right food, water, rest and sanitation, it will stay healthy.

But if the environment isn’t good, food is toxic and water tainted, the body will malfunction. When this malfunction happens then, disease will develop. A disease that has a simple solution – get clean water or healthy food and allow the body to heal.

This idea is called the terrain theory. Maintain health and correct disease by ensuring a healthy environment for the body. Rest, diet, water, exercise and even social interaction all play a role in health.

Headed over some rough terrain

If someone has become pre-diabetic or type 2 diabetic – then there’s something wrong with their environment (have they become carbohydrate intolerant due to a low-fat diet, perhaps?) So changing how they eat would be the most logical solution to this problem (and surprise – Changing diet is the most effective method of reversing diabetes! – more about that in a future email.)

Or we could continue to eat the same toxic foods and take some drugs to hide our symptoms of type 2 diabetes. This is very good for the drug companies’ bottom line. And naturally, as it gets worse, we can take newer, more powerful and expensive drugs to hide the symptoms. It’s a downward spiral.

Of course, it’s not as simple as choosing between one or the other – sometimes, we need a combination of the two to maintain health.

I’m here to help you make sure your body has a fighting chance to heal – by having healthy terrain where disease can’t get a foothold. Maybe you don’t have to drug the fish.

You. Can. Heal.
