Bottle Your Own Wine at Nevada City Winery’s Annual Open House

The weekend of May 19th & 20th Nevada City Winery is celebrating 32 years of award-winning winemaking in Nevada County including thirteen years in a row of being voted Nevada County’s Best Winery.

At this year’s Open House become a winemaker for the day and bottle your own wines. Winemaker Mark Foster has produced two special barrels of a Zinfandel and a Cabernet Franc uniquely for this event. Amid the usual rows of barrels in the wine cellar, Foster has set up an entire bottling process in miniature. First barrel taste the wines. Then fill, cork, foil, and finally sign your label before putting it on the bottle. The Winery will have all the necessary supplies available so there is no need to bring any bottles.

This year’s label art depicts the front of Nevada City Winery including the Old Foundry Garage painted by local artist Mim Meakin.

The $10 per person entry fee ($5 for Wine Club Members) to the Open House includes all wine tasting, entry to the “Bottle Your Own” party in the barrel room, and a BBQ-grilled lunch.

Go to www.ncwinery.com for more event details. Nevada City Winery (530-265-9463) is located at 321 Spring Street, across from Miners Foundry.

The entry will be limited to 1980 and older vehicles, including vintage motorcycles. There will be a special class to allow cars of special interest to enter, such as race cars and exotics. A collaboration between Sierra Vintners and the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce

SAVE THE DATE – AUGUST 4TH!!

The Nevada City Chamber of Commerce and the Sierra Vintners are proud to announce their second annual Nevada City Uncorked, August 4, 2012 from 1-5pm in historic downtown Nevada City. With nearly 50 wineries and food vendors plus over 500 attendees from neighboring Foothill communities, we expect this event to be even better than last year. Locations will be set up all within walking distance on Spring, Pine, Broad and Commercial Streets. Attendees will be encouraged to visit local businesses, chat with merchants, and learn the history of our charming town while enjoying a sampling of local Foothill wines and food. From vintage cabs and beautiful chardonnays to delicious crepes and creative California cuisine, there will be something for everyone.

Opportunities To Get Involved:
1. Restaurant/Caterer off-site – We can pair your delicious food with a local winery at a tasting room or retail shop. If you choose to serve your food at a retail shop, a representative from your business will need to be present to set up and serve the food. You will be reimbursed 50 cents for every food taste ticket you turn in after the event. Cost is $0

2. Restaurant as venue – You provide the food and venue while hosting a visiting winery or pouring your own wine in your restaurant. If you choose to have a winery pour at your restaurant you will need to forfeit your liquor license during the hours of the wine stroll. If you prefer to pour your own wine, remember that there is no limit to the number of tastes you must provide and there is no reimbursement for wine. You will be reimbursed 50 cents for every food taste ticket you turn in after the event. Cost is $0 for Chamber members, $25 to non-chamber member (ABC license)

3. Retailer shop as venue – Host a visiting winery and restaurant/caterer. The Chamber will set up an existing table (or provide one) in your business where a winery will pour wine and a restaurant/caterer will serve their food. You act as the gracious host, and provide the festival atmosphere and help spread the word. Cost is $0 for Chamber members, $25 to non-chamber member (ABC license)

4. Sponsor – Sponsor this year’s commemorative wine glass and have your logo featured for attendees to enjoy for years to come. Cost is $500. Smaller sponsorship opportunities may include your business’ logo on posters and flyers, signage at the event, ads in the program guide and complimentary event tickets.

5. Advertise – Ad space is available in the program guide. Ads range from $25-$100. Please contact Cathy Whittlesey at the Chamber Office if you’d like to purchase an ad. Ads must be submitted camera ready along with payment no later than July 9th.

Outreach
Our aggressive press campaign begins 8 weeks before the wine stroll and includes 3 rounds of press releases targeting local and regional press, including print, online, TV, radio and social media. 600 program guides will be printed and distributed throughout Nevada County. Local media sponsors may include The Union Newspaper, KVMR, KNCO, NC Advocate and Food Art and Wine.

Tickets

Tickets are $35adv/$45day of. There will also be special wine club and group pricing available. This includes a commemorative wine glass to use at each wine tasting plus 5 food tickets. Attendees can purchase additional food tickets for 2/$5 or 5/$10. Must be 21 or older to purchase tickets.

For questions contact the Chamber Office at 530-265-2692 or info@nevadacitychamber.com

Dear Oriental Rug Lovers,

After 32 years of providing some of the finest hand-knotted rugs in the world, we are closing our Magic Carpet Gallery and reinventing ourselves by moving to a web-based operation. We will however, continue our expert wash and repair service.

The closing of our store means a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to purchase rugs from our hand-picked collection, at an incredible 30% discount. Our unique inventory includes new and antique classical and village rugs as well as some of the finest Cultural Survival rugs that are woven with hand-carded, hand-spun and vegetable dyed wool – the antiques of the future. As the global economy changes, we are seeing a dramatic impact on the rug weaving industry. This has led to a substantial increase in prices as well as a dramatic decrease in production of this magnificent art form. This is a golden opportunity to furnish your home or office from our unique collection of Oriental rugs at far below current retail.

This discount also applies to our new and antique statue collection, old Indian Gujarati embroideries, Navajo rugs, jewelry and old rug pillows. All our inventory may be viewed on our state-of-the-art website www.themagiccarpet.biz. We encourage you to come visit us in historic Nevada City. As always, we offer home-trials and free shipping.

We wish to thank all of you for your support and appreciation of this great art form.

To all of you who support the expansion of broadband infrastructure and the adoption of broadband service as quickly as possible, we need your critical feedback as we move towards beginning to hold community and neighborhood meetings. A draft summary of the Gold Country Broadband Consortium (GCBC) Kickoff Workshop is attached. It needs a lot of gap-filling, and I know you can do it. If we are to inform the public in, say, the Washington area of Nevada County, we need to have all of the information at hand about the services available from the nearby public jurisdictions, the school district, the health care providers, the libraries and others to offer in exchange for the community’s commitment to adopt broadband service as soon as it can be extended to them. We need the same comprehensive information across all the five counties in the GCBC.

So, if you were at the workshop and can correct or add to the notes that were captured, we need your input. If you were not at the workshop but you can correct or add to the notes that were captured, we need your input. If you were or were not at the workshop and are willing to help facilitate a meeting in your community, we need your contact information. If you are part of an organization that provides public, health care, school or library services via the Internet and are willing to participate in the community meetings – a great opportunity to market your organization – we need to hear from you. If you did not map your location and its associated broadband service (or lack of service) at the workshop or have not visited the GCBC web site to provide that input, please do so as soon as possible – http://goldcountryconsortium.wordpress.com/

Finally, if you haven’t done a speed test on your own Internet service, please visit the FCC site www.broadband.gov/qualitytest and don’t forget to send your results to russ@sedcorp.biz to update our project maps.

Thank you for your continued support! Together, we maximize our chances of reaching the goal of having broadband service available to every home and business in our region within three years. It’s a tough challenge – it makes me glad that we’ve got you on our team.

Spring Is Here, Turn in your Ear Muffs for Teddy Bear Ears!

AHH, the Teddy Bear. He was, perhaps your pillow, your pacifier, or your all-around best pal. If you were like millions of other kids, a teddy bear helped you weather the storms of childhood – and maybe a few decades beyond. In its 28th year, the Teddy Bear Convention in idyllic Nevada City will celebrate the enduring charms and trace the birth of the teddy bear, more than a century ago, to its permanent place in the contemporary scene as the ubiquitous plaything and highly prized collectible.

Cool, Hip, Funky, Fun – Just a few of the words that describe the traditional introduction to the Spring Season at the Teddy Bear Convention in Nevada City, CA, one of the loveliest and liveliest towns in the Sierra Nevada Foothills. The convention sales floor is stuffed with thousands of lively, lovable, unusual, old and new teddy bears, their friends, and all of their accessories.

Convention organizer, Dorothy Drake observes that “This is one of the longest running Teddy Bear events in the country. It is a friendly imaginative event that will enchant you for a long time.” What started as a simple Teddy Bear Picnic in 1984 has turned in to a 2.5 day ‘happening’ for teddy bear geeks, devotees and fans – of all ages. The theme, Teddy Bear Adventures in the Enchanted Forest, creates the ambiance and sets the stage for Teddy Bear Fever.

Thursday, May 10 at Trolley Junction (at Northern Queen Inn), 400 Railroad Ave., Nevada City – There are 3 ticketed events to choose from. For the crafter that wants to know more about how teddy bears are constructed, there are 2 classes. And if you are new to the area and want to see the sights, or soak up some history, you’ll love the afternoon tour that includes the Empire Gold Mine!

Friday, May 11 – 12noon to 5PM and Saturday, May 12 – 10AM to 4PM at Nevada City Elks Lodge, 518 Highway 49, Nevada City – Convention floor will be open to all with events for all ages to enjoy. Bring a can of food for the Nevada County Food Bank and get $1.00 off your admission.
Here’s what’s happening:

Exhibits: ‘Teddy Bears – Still Your Best Friend’ and a visual salute to the 28 year history of the Teddy Bear Convention

Celebrity Guests: look for Smokey the Bear, Red Riding Hood, Grandma, Goldilocks, and Raggedy Ann

Appraisals: Author and expert, John Port will be appraising visiting bears, so bring yours!

For our young (and not so young) visitors: Storytime with Roz, ‘It’s OK to Touch’ shopping area, and a fun make’n take project.

Teddy Dialogues Breakfast, Saturday, May 12 8:30-10AM (ticketed meal event). Start the day with a yummy breakfast at a teddy bear lover gathering featuring intriguing discussion topics.

On Saturday, May 12, 2012, the Nevada City Film Festival, Miners Foundry Cultural Center and Emily’s Catering and Cakes will present “BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S”, the 1961 classic romantic comedy film starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard, followed by a plentiful spread of sumptuous springtime hors d’oeuvres, plus live music and lots of dancing! “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” will be one of the wildest nights Nevada City has ever known!

In “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” struggling writer Paul Varjak (Peppard) moves into a New York apartment building and becomes intrigued by his pretty, quirky neighbor Holly Golightly (Hepburn). Holly’s lifestyle confuses and fascinates Paul; in public she flits through parties with a sexy, sophisticated air, but when they’re alone she changes into a sweetly vulnerable bundle of neuroses. Truman Capote may have written “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” but it was Audrey Hepburn who brought the naïve, eccentric café society girl, Holly Golightly, alive. The film also features Patricia Neal, Buddy Ebsen, Martin Balsam, and Mickey Rooney.

Following the film, dinner and drinks will be hosted in the beautiful Stone Hall. The Hall will be decorated just like Holly’s party in the film. Emily’s Catering and Cakes will serve a delicious spread including quail eggs benedict with basil hollandaise, mini sweet and savory pastries, mini crab cakes, mini brioche French toast, ricotta and herb stuffed mushrooms crispy chicken & waffle bites with rosemary honey, asparagus with passion fruit aioli, and an assortment of desert bites. There is something to satisfy both your sweet and savory tooth. Oh, and champagne, how could we forget the champagne! LeGacy Productions is proud to present Beth Henley’s award winning comedy-drama “Crimes of the Heart” at the Off Center Stage in Grass Valley through May 13th.

Directed by LeGacy co-owner and producer Sue LeGate, a local all star cast tells the story of the three Magrath sisters, Meg, Babe, and Lenny, who reunite at Old Granddaddy’s home in Hazelhurst, Mississippi after Babe shoots her abusive husband. The trio was raised in a dysfunctional family with a penchant for ugly predicaments and each has endured her share of hardship and misery. Past resentments bubble to the surface as they’re forced to deal with assorted relatives and past relationships while coping with the latest incident that has disrupted their lives. Each sister is forced to face the consequences of the “crimes of the heart” she has committed.

Nadia White (Nunsense, Angry Housewives), Kate Haight (Full Monty, Angry Housewives), Grace Fae (Into the Woods, The Andrews Brothers, Streetcar Named Desire) portray the three sisters, accompanied by Trish Adair (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Streetcar Named Desire) as the self centered uppity cousin “Chick”. And rounding out the cast is Josh Triplett (Death of A Salesman, On the Waterfront, Haunting of Hill House) as the ambitious lawyer Barnette Lloyd and LeGacy newcomer Brian Arnold as Meg’s old flame, Doc.

“Crimes of the Heart” plays Thursday through Sunday, with Thursday’s show at 7pm, Friday and Saturday at 8pm, Sunday at 2pm. Special Mother’s Day closing matinee May 13th will include cake and champagne after the show. Tickets are $18 in advance, and $20 at the door.

Back by popular demand, The Nevada City Film Festival, Crest Theatre and Miners Foundry Cultural Center present 2 nights of “Deconstructing The Beatles – A Multimedia Journey Into the Studio with The Beatles”, Tuesday & Wednesday, May 8 & 9, 2012. Hosted by composer, producer and Beatles expert Scott Freiman, this popular presentation SOLD OUT both venues this last February and has been hailed as “pure MAGIC”. The presentation features rare audio, unreleased video, numerous first-hand sources, anecdotes and more to uncover the reasons why their music continues to be loved by millions.

The historic Miners Foundry Cultural Center in downtown Nevada City, CA will host the first of this two-night extravaganza with the 2-hour presentation “Tomorrow Never Knows: Deconstructing The Beatles’ Revolver”. The Beatles’ Revolver is a groundbreaking album that routinely tops “Best Album” lists. The 1966 album launched a period of studio experimentation for the Beatles that coincided with the end of their concert performances. With memorable songs such as “Eleanor Rigby”, “Yellow Submarine”, and “Tomorrow Never Knows”, the Beatles pushed popular music to a place it had never been.

Wednesday night’s presentation at The Crest Theatre is on The Beatles’ 1968 self-titled album (commonly referred to as the White Album). The White Album is the bestselling album of the Beatles’ career. Its thirty songs span almost every style of music – from hard rock to country to chamber music to avant garde. Its recording took place during a remarkable year in Beatles history that included a lengthy trip to India and the arrival of Yoko Ono. In “Looking Through A Glass Onion: Deconstructing The Beatles’ White Album”, Mr. Freiman takes Beatles fans young and old into the studio as the band creates this masterpiece. Mr. Freiman will discuss the creation of “Revolution”, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, “Blackbird” and many other classic songs from the White Album.

Hospitality House to host benefit concert at Utah’s Place
Saturday, May 12th, 7pm, 1262 Sutton Way in Grass Valley

On May 12th at 7pm, Hospitality House will open the doors of Utah’s Place for a benefit concert to help raise money for costs associated with permitting and renovation of the new space. The concert will feature Brendan Phillips (Utah Phillips’s son) and Bodhi Busick, The Moore Brothers, and two of Utah’s long-time friends and fellow folk singers, Larry Hanks and Deborah Robbins. Admittance to the show will be by donation.

Hospitality House is looking to begin renovations of Utah’s Place so it can open its doors to shelter up to 54 people experiencing homelessness in Nevada County. The crucial phase of permitting is underway, and work will begin in the early summer. This concert will help raise funds to continue the process. If you have not had a chance to see the new space, this is the perfect opportunity to come hear great music and learn more about Hospitality House and Utah’s Place and contribute to its continued success.

About the Performers:
Brendan Phillips, Utah’s son, has been touring extensively with his band, Fast Rattler as well as playing a number of well-received solo sets at shows along side performers like Tracy Grammer, Peter Yarrow, and Meklit Hadero. After 3 years in Portland Oregon working as a community organizer with Sisters Of The Road (a 30-year-old nonprofit that provided hot meals and community organizing trainings to people experiencing homelessness and extreme poverty) Brendan has moved back to Nevada County to reconnect with this community and volunteer with Hospitality House. Recently, Brendan and Fast Rattler teamed up with virtuosic guitar player and songwriter, Bodhi Busick to record an EP titled “Hand On The Plow”. Bodhi and Brendan will share the stage and debut songs from the new EP at the show.

For decades, Larry Hanks has been delighting audiences with his rough-hewn bass vocals, tastefully spare 6 and 12-string guitar accompaniments, and virtuosic Jew’s Harp playing. Listeners respond warmly to his easy, unpretentious mannerisms, and a loving approach to the repertoire he painstakingly selects to reflect the many facets of the human condition. Larry Hanks brings charm, depth, and a heart full of tenderness to every song he sings. Influenced by the music of Sam Hinton, Leadbelly, and Woody Guthrie, Hanks is also known for his many old songs of the American West– both sad and rollicking cowboy and work songs, topical and political songs, and Traditional American ballads. Larry has performed with hundreds of musicians throughout his long career. Some of them include Gordon Bok, Jody Stecher, Mike Seeger, Utah Phillips, Michael Cooney, Geoff Muldaur, Malvina Reynolds, Roger Perkins, Janis Joplin, Fred Holstein, Mike Marker, and Kenny Hall, to name a few. Over the past few years, Larry has teamed up with his wife and musical partner Deborah Robbins to perform all over the country. They recently released their first duo record titled “No Hiding Places”. Larry and Deborah are both long-time friends of Utah’s and are honored to be included in this wonderful evening of music.

FINAL 4 SHOWS!
Thursday (7pm), Friday (8pm), and TWO shows on Saturday (2pm and 8pm)

Nevada Theatre, 401 Broad Street, Nevada City

Written by John Patrick, Adapted from the novel by Vern Sneider, Directed by Diane Fetterly

Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra opens its 18th season with the Tony award-winning comedy, The Teahouse of the August Moon, from April 12 to May 5, 2012, at the Nevada Theatre. Teahouse concerns the clash of cultures that resulted from the American Occupation of Okinawa from 1945 to 1952 following World War II.

In the play, Captain Fisby, is assigned to carry out “Plan B”. In a tiny Okinawan village, he is to begin the process of Americanization by instituting a local democratic government, establishing a capitalist economy, and building a schoolhouse (Pentagon-shaped) in which the village children will be taught English.
