Google is selecting cities to install super fast Internet access. To be selected, all we have to do is convince Google that they are welcome here and that we’ll help them test their new technology.

Part of our invitation to Google will be a video to be filmed Sunday, March 14 starting at 1pm.

It isn’t DSL. It isn’t Cable. It isn’t Satellite. Google’s project will use light to deliver Internet speed more than 100 times faster than current DSL and cable speeds. That’s 1 gigabit per second, which we’re calling a GoogleBit!

The benefits are more than just for families at home. The availability of super fast networks would be a huge competitive advantage for existing businesses and would attract new green businesses to complement our creative and high-tech residents.

Ray and Linda Pullizi of Nevada City have been named as Duke and Duchess for this year’s event.  The selections were announced this week by the Nevada City Mardi Gras Committee.

The honorees will join Parade Grand Marshal Bob Breck of KNCO Radio as featured guests in the 2010 Nevada City Mardi Gras Parade on Sunday, Feb. 14.  The parade rolls down Broad Street beginning at 2 p.m.

For nearly 20 years, the Andersons have been among the chamber’s most active and enthusiastic volunteers, said Executive Manager Cathy Whittlesey.

“They’re always there when you need them,” said Whittlesey.  “They’re the kind of people who roll up their sleeves and get the job done.  They always have smiles on their faces.  Their hearts are truly in Nevada City.”

Denise Anderson, who pursued a career in banking, served for 17 years as the Nevada City Chamber’s treasurer.  Gerry Anderson, a self-employed contractor, helps with special event organization and has lent his construction skills at the chamber office.

The Pulizzis have been very active volunteer supporters of Mardi Gras in recent years.  They and fellow members of the Boozefighters Motorcycle Club are among the event’s most avid supporters.

Local radio station executive Bob Breck has been named grand marshal of the 2010 Nevada City Mardi Gras Parade.   The honoree will be featured prominently in the annual Mardi Gras Parade, which rolls down Broad Street beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 14.

“Bob Breck is a great choice for grand marshal.  He and KNCO do a wonderful job for the community,” said Cathy Whittlesey, executive manager of the sponsoring Nevada City Chamber of Commerce.   “They have always been very supportive of the chamber’s events and activities.”

Breck is CEO and part owner of Nevada County Broadcasters, operators of KNCO NewsTalk 830 and Star 94 FM in Nevada County and KUBA in Yuba County.

He is a radio and television graduate of San Jose State University who has an extensive background in the broadcast industry.  He has held positions in news, programming and radio station management and development.

Active in the community, Breck is a past chairman of the Grass Valley/Nevada County Chamber of Commerce and past president of the Grass Valley Rotary Club.  He has been involved with numerous other community groups.

Breck and Anna, his wife of 29 years, reside in Alta Sierra and are the parents of two children, Bobby and Alison.

NEVADA CITY –  Gaily masked characters, pirates, Cajun cookin’ and midwinter fun come to the Sierra foothills Feb. 13-14 as Mardi Gras 2010 is celebrated with Old West style in historic Nevada City.

Nevada City’s main drag, Broad Street, becomes a West Coast Bourbon Street as merry spectators fill the downtown historic district for the annual Mardi Gras parade.

The Sunday afternoon Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14) family parade moves down Broad Street beginning at 2 p.m.   Colorfully masked and costumed characters and societies ride, march, dance and strut through an appreciative crowd, handing out beads, trinkets, bangles and more.  Everyone is encouraged to wear their own festive Mardi Gras attire.

This year’s 18th annual celebration kicks off on Saturday night (Feb. 13) with the annual Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball in historic Miners Foundry at 325 Spring Street. The masquerade ball runs from 8 p.m. to midnight and features dancing to the live southern rock of the Holcomb Brothers Band.   Traditional Cajun food will be available, including Cajun sausage sandwiches, chicken and sausage gumbo, Manuale prawns, southern style cole slaw, red beans and rice and bread pudding.

Activities surrounding Sunday’s free family parade include a Mardi Gras Street Faire from 11- 4 p.m. Food, drink, craft and clothing vendors will set up booths on North Pine and Commercial streets, with plenty of room for families with children and baby strollers.

Nevada City is known for its classic small town spirit and lively community events.   With a population of just 3,000, Nevada City swells to thousands more for the annual Mardi Gras celebration.

Visitors should plan to arrive early to get a good vantage point along the parade route.  Out-of-town visitors should book local accommodations early.

Nevada City is located on the scenic western slope of the Sierra, midway between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe. From Sacramento, take eastbound Interstate 80 to Auburn and Highway 49 north to Nevada City.  From Marysville and the north valley, take eastbound State Route 20.  From Reno, take westbound I-80 and westbound State Route 20.

The Nevada City Chamber of Commerce will present the annual Mardi Gras celebration on the weekend of February 13 and 14, 2010.  This celebration is organized to have fun and to specifically bring more local people and tourists to downtown during a traditionally slow time of year.

The Nevada City Chamber has several Major sponsorship opportunities to help support the Mardi Gras, and this year in addition, we are offering another way to support the Mardi Gras by sponsoring bands in the parade, like the Ophir Prison Band, and Local school bands. In addition, you can help underwrite other expenses incurred by the Nevada City Chamber associated with the costs of putting on this great event.


This year’s Mardi Gras Ball, on February 13 features a Traditional Mardi Gras theme, with colorful costumes encouraged for the Ball. The Music for The Ball is a triumphant repeat performance by local favorites, The Holcomb Brothers Band, with delicious Cajun food fare served during the event.  Tickets are only $10 in advance and may be purchased at The Nevada City Chamber office and other locations to be announced.  On Sunday, February 14 the parade rolls out at 2 pm with floats and marching bands to be enjoyed by all.  A family friendly Street Fare will be held Sunday on Pine Street, sure to be fun for all.


The Mardi Gras Parade and Ball have become so popular that we must provide adequate advertising, security and facilities for attendees. In addition, we pay stipends to the parade bands that perform, and insurance. Frankly, we are always in need of financial support from the business community of Nevada County.  We believe that all commercial and professional businesses benefit when so many local people and out of town tourists visit Nevada City.
