Painted in summer of 2012. This is a portion of the Maine Monument by Columbus Circle in New York City at the southwest corner of Central Park. The sculpture was sculpted by Atillio Piccirilli. The painting shows a figure from the back sculpture group known as "The Post-Bellum Idea: Justic Receiving Back the Sword Entrusted to War." And a pigeon sits contently by the water trough.
Painted on location in downtown New York city, this painting shows the Brooklyn Bridge at sunset. At the base of the bridge, some distance away, can be seen Pier 17 with masts behind the pier (which are historic boats, schooners owned by the Maritime museum). I\'m not a fan of modern buildings, but in this case the Continental Center, which is shaped octagonly, reflects the sky in the opposite direction creating an interesting transition of harmonious colors with the sunset.
Painting showing the bright red building exterior with large windows at Washington Square North at the corner of Fifth Avenue (across from Washington Square Park) and a pink rose bush and classic old lamp post and old iron rail fence. With the exception of the "NO Parking" sign, the scene could be from the mid-1800's.

Painted in late August, in Washington Square Park. I had passed through the park a day or so previous and had noticed this tree with it's burnt orange coloring (for one thing astonished of the first sign of Autumn) and what's more a yellowish, autumn-y tree behind it and then surrounding yellow-green trees and was impressed by the color harmony. If that weren't enough it was all contrasted by the coolish-blue of the building and space behind the trees, poking out through the "sky-holes", and this was further heightened by blue tarps being used for construction - a painting waiting to happen.

I'm reposting this blog entry from October 2006 as I'm making it available as a print and greeting card on FineArtAmerica.com

This was painted en plein air in 2004 in New York city. This painting shows the Brooklyn Bridge, an icon of New York, at late afternoon. In the distance clearly visible is Pier 16.

I'm a little sad that I sold this painting. It may not have been painted with consummate skill but it is a record of being there at the Brooklyn Bridge at a particular time when the color and sunset effect were particularly beautiful which of course it will never quite be again, and I feel I did capture that. Oh well, perhaps I'll do a copy and make it even better!

Palace of Fine Arts

I'm happy to say that I've started using a new service which will allow me to sell prints at various sizes and configurations in addition to offering the original for sale. This is the first painting made available like this.

This is a painting of the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, California. The scene shows the beautiful, classical architecture on a clear, sunny day with a bright blue sky, not a cloud in the sky, in the morning light of August, 2011.
This is similar in subject to the previous entry. Painted in the same location with a different point of view. An artists gains momentum repeating a similar motif by gaining familiarity with the subject matter.
I painted this on my recent trip to San Francisco. It is a view of an area called "The Panhandle". It forms a "panhandle" with Golden Gate Park meaning it is to the edge of the park and marks the entrance to the park. There are beautiful, large and old trees found within the panhandle and beautiful historic houses bordering the panhandle, and nearby, about two blocks, is the Haight Ashbury district.
This is a watercolor painting done in early August (2011) in Central Park, New York. There are pink flowers (either roses or tulips, I’m not sure) seen in the background, and some people sitting on benches in the foreground, relaxing, enjoying the day and the sculpture of Christopher Columbus. The painting is done with spontaneity and use of drybrush can be seen in foliage of the nearby trees.

This was painted a few weeks ago, I believe at the beginning of August (2011). It is a large watercolor of a street scene in New York City, looking down the street along 14th Street (in lower Manhattan), there is a grocery store to the left and buildings on the other side of the street and plenty of greenery and trees which is perhaps what attracted me to the scene. And a wide sidewalk with people passing by. Looking at the painting back in my studio I felt the colors were too weak and a bit washed out, so I used watercolor pencils (made by Derwent) to enrich and intensify the color. I selectively used washes of water which intensifies the color more and then came back and selectively drew again with the watercolor pencils. As a result there is a strong contrast of colors and excitement to the piece. The pencils were also used to accentuate the people a bit more as well.

This was painted on the Brooklyn side of the Brooklyn Bridge in the park called "Brooklyn Bridge Park". It was painted on a late afternoon day as the sun was setting, there was a beautiful sky with some clouds catching sunlight, a beautiful view of the Municipal Building which one can get a good view of it's classical structure and it's tower and you can even make out the gilded statue on top, "Civic Fame" (to the left of the bridge, the taller more square building is Verizon Building.) Other buildings can be seen, apartment buildings of lower Manhattan and thorough fairs leading off and onto FDR highway.
There were many people out and about that day in the park, many of them there to view an outdoor movie in another part of the park. In the painting pep ole can be seen sitting on the park bench and standing about, relaxing, looking at the East River and the view of Manhattan.

This painting of the Williasmburg Bridge at Twilight was started at dusk or sunset and went on until it was dark and incandescent light sources came on. It's a twilight scene, what James Abbott McNeil Whistler would call a "Nocturne", perhaps experimental to a degree, at least in my oeuvre. Liberal use of gouache was used in painting the city lights. Warm glow and reflections in the foreground are from electric light or artificial light sources. Being on location, painting on the spot, in front of the motif, brought out a sense of spontaneity, emotion and poetry.
This was painted in McCarren Park in Brooklyn on a late afternoon. In the background is the dome of the Eastern Orthodox Church located there; the park is located near Williamsburg and Greenpoint neighborhoods. In the background, people are playing baseball, the fence to the right is part of the baseball field and catching the last rays of sunlight of the day as is the dome itself and the trees and long shadows can be seen on the ground. In the foreground a spectator is enjoying a live band which is just out of view of the painting.
I found this park in Greenpoint when I first moved to Williamsburg over 20 years ago. I was familiar with sculpture of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, particularly the Sherman Monument at Grand Army Plaza in Manhattan, which this statue reminded me of very much. Yet here was this beautiful winged victory not amidst the clamor and excitement of Manhattan, but right in my own quite (at the time) back yard. The sculpture was created by Carl Augustus Heber. Since moving here, things have changed, some buildings have been torn down like the Old Dutch Mustard Company, most of the classical ornamentation of the New York side of the Williamsburg Bridge has been removed, newer buildings obstruct more picturesque buildings and churches. And it occurred to me that I've observed these changes and yet, a younger generation will come along and accept things as they are and lament changes later as they get older. Yet this park, McGolrick Park, looks just the same as when I moved here and in fact it hasn't changed since it opened in 1891. That may be why I still have a strong emotional reaction visiting this park and seeing this monument dedicated to the soldiers of World War I of Greenpoint.
I started this painting on the spot, on the East River looking at the Manhattan Bridge from the Manhattan side, and felt it was weak in color and lacking in darks so I developed it further in the studio with gouache and a slight bit of pastel.
A hot, late afternoon on the East Side in downtown Manhattan looking west at the corner of 1st Avenue and 10th street . The sun is just out of view to the left and the tree is in "rim lighting" creating a golden lining as it were (the effect created when something is back lit, a "halo" effect) - a golden lining of yellow-green-gold. The sunlight effect can be seen and felt in the clear plane distinctions (front and side) of the buildings due to the side of the buildings receiving strong sunlight as the sun lowers on the horizon. There was a lot of street activity which is indicated as well - passersby on the street.
This was painted on the lower west side of Manhattan along the esplanade that runs a great distance along the Hudson River from Battery Park. This scene was somewhat north of Battery Park near where the NY Waterways ferry operates. The painting was done in the late afternoon, at sunset, with people walking and enjoying being out. Looking out in the distance is the Hudson River and the land mass and buildings of New Jersey receding into space.
This was painted in the morning in Washington Square park looking east when the light was just hitting a patch of daisies. The daisies stood out dramatically as everything else was in the shade except for the sunlight which got through the trees creating a dappled effect on the walkway. One can see into the distance from the walkway which goes out onto the street and beyond. A monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi stands in the shade, click here to read more about this monument. in Washington Square Park.
This painting was done in the heart of Chinatown in New York City - on Mott Street where it meets Pell Street. The painting shows the Church of the Transfiguration and shows people walking about, going about their business and enjoying the day.
Painted by the Conservatory Water in Central Park, this is a painting of summer - people enjoying a pleasant day sitting on the bench in th morning near a lush, flowering garden.
The beautiful bright yellow-orange flowers, tulips I believe, against the cool green foliage, with a sunflower, caught my eye in the Central Park Conservatory Garden. There is a lot of variety and interest in the painting, but the flowers are the star.
This is a watercolor painting done in the morning of what I feel are two of New York city's most beautiful sculptures. They are currently located behind the New York County Clerk building I say "currently" because they were originally installed in front of the Surrogate'a Courthouse in New York (itself an amazing building). The sculptures were created by Philip Martiny who was a student of Saint Gaudens. Click here to find out about these wonderful statues.
I love the broad view as the East River (which is technically not a river at all) opens into the port of New York, (also known as Upper New York bay) one can see a broad expanse of sea and sky. The most distant land visible on the left is Governors Island. Coming nearer is lower buildings of lower Manhattan and Pier 16 and then finally of course the Manhattan tower of the iconic, world-renown, Brooklyn Bridge. Atop the tower are the stars and stripes; the good ole' US Flag proudly waving.
This is a iconic view of the Williamsburg Bridge in an increasingly popular and trendy neighborhood (my home of 20 years.) The painting was done just as the chromatically lit clouds faded. The sky got darker and a faint glow remained from the sun which had sunk below the horizon. The city scene got darker and the glow of the city lights became more prominent and the bridge showed its display of lights along the cables like a Christmas tree.
