Game Review - Blacklight: Retribution, an MMOFPS from Perfect World Entertainment

"Blacklight: Retribution is a free to play high-paced online multiplayer FPS shooter with a number of game types and maps. The game appears to as of today have no current single player at all other than training. The game types are Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Domination (a ticket type of game), King of the Hill (objective capture) and Kill Confirmed which is similar to Team Deathmatch, except players can collect tokens from their dead opponents for extra Combat Points, and pick up their own from dead teammates, to form a kill denied. Siege and Netwar modes coming soon."

I've been playing this for 11 straight hours, and all i can say was that i am amazed by the game, the idea of an urban-futuristic setting is wonderful, and sufficient enough to accomodate 16 players battling each other. What makes this game different from other mmofps, such as War Rock, is the simple gameplay, NO VEHICLES, so players must test their reflexes in mouse-handling to win this game. There's even a ranking system everytime a match ends, adding bonuses like experience and GPs (a sort of in-game currency system, used for renting/buying weapon parts and equipments, which lasts for 1-7 days, depending on the player's total GP).

Speaking about weapon parts and equipments, there's also decorations that can even add some stats. We're talking about deep customization here. Premade guns and pistols are available and is cheaper than buying parts, although it becomes un-customizable. But it is good if the player has little GP (275 GPs for one premade weapon, and this price applies to every other premade weapon).

Now let's talk about graphics. Blacklight: Retribution is one of the best MMOFPS with Crysis 2 graphics. My laptop has an Intel HD 2000 and it runs this game buttery smooth (at low settings, of course), and requires a decent GPU, like Nvidia's Geforce GTX series, to run this at godlike settings. Enough RAM is required too. Also, don't forget, the higher the settings are, the more bandwith you need to have. After all this is an online game...

So, that's it about the game. IGN gave an 8.5 out of 10, praising the game for its graphics, gameplay and deep customization. Gamespot's, however, was more harsh, giving the game a 6.5 out of 10 ("Fair"). Although they praised the shooting mechanics and item balance, they criticized the game for being too generic and hoped that the planned Siege and Netwar modes will help it stand out.

Make your computer talk and respond similar to “Jarvis” in the Iron Man movies

Let me start off by saying Merry Christmas to all of my AMAZING Torching Igloos viewers! Your support means the world to me, and seeing as how this is our first Christmas together, I wanted to do something special. So my gift to you is a sweet tutorial on how to make your Windows 7 computer more human-like so you won't feel so lonely during the holidays. This is also a great way to show off for your friends... tell them for Christmas you got a talking computer that does whatever you want it to do. You'll be amazed how simple this is, requiring just a few free downloads, some MINOR scripting (seriously, my 5 year-old nephew can do it), and your imagination.

Before we get started, I have to confess... I originally did this a few years ago when I owned a Macbook. Yes, I know... Blasphemy! While Apple made the process relatively easy to do (even though finding documentation wasn't so easy), once I purchased my PC I found that this task was a little more difficult to address. When I say it was a little more difficult, I don't mean the actual process... trying to find information on how to make it happen was the difficult part. Fortunately for you, I've done the research and testing, so now you can partake with ease. Now on to the good part.

Required Materials:

* Windows 7 or Vista based computer (32 & 64-bit both work). I can't promise these steps are exactly the same for Vista (who uses Vista anyway?) so you're on your own if you're stuck with that crappy OS.* At least 2 gigs of memory. I believe it will work with 1 gig, but the more the merrier... and trust me, you want to have lots of memory for this feature.* At least a dual-core processor. Again, might work with less... but it's going to be brutal.

* A microphone. If you have a laptop with one built in, that's perfect... if you're on a desktop, something with good sensitivity would be best. A headset is fine I guess, but you're not going to be very cool trying to give your computer commands from across the room unless you have a wireless headset.

* Windows Speech Recognition (it's built in... I'll tell ya how to enable it)

* Windows Speech Recognition Macros

* An imagination (this is the difficult part, if you don't think outside the box... it's not going to be as impressive).

* Speakers (yes, I know this seems obvious... but you never know).

If you've been keeping up with Torching Igloos, you'll remember I featured Windows Speech Recognition Macros in our article "More Awesome programs that are FREE!" we're going to use this program, and the speech recognition feature already built into Windows 7 (btw this should also work for Vista). So go ahead and download Windows Speech Recognition Macros here.Before you install the Macros, make sure your microphone is attached and functioning properly (if you don't know how to do that, you're probably on the wrong site)... then go ahead and enable Windows Speech Recognition in your Control Panel (Start Menu/Control Panel/Ease Of Access/Speech Recognition/Start Speech Recognition). While you're at it, it's a good idea to take the speech tutorial to familiarize yourself with some common voice commands. You should also go ahead and visit the section that says "Train your computer to better understand you." Neither is required, but going through the steps provided by these tutorials will help make the process of bossing your computer around a lot more efficient. An additional bonus you'll get after training your computer to better recognize your voice... less problems with it responding to ambient noises and other voices in the room. So go ahead and take the extra 10 minutes to learn these processes.

You now have Speech Recognition working, and if you did the tutorials like I suggested... you're probably trying out all kinds of cool voice commands to make your computer function without even touching your mouse/keyboard. Surprisingly, yes... it's THIS easy! This is just the beginning of the fun though. Using Windows Speech Recognition Macros you can automate almost any function on your computer. So let's go ahead and install Windows Speech Recognition Macros. Just double-click it from where you saved the download (for fun, see if you can do it without touching your mouse/keyboard using only your voice). Then follow the proper prompts. Once you have it installed, make sure you have it create a desktop shortcut. Once this shortcut is created, I highly suggest copying it into your startup folder. To access your startup folder quickly, you can just pull up your Start Menu, click "All Programs, " scroll down to "Startup," right-click and choose "open." Then copy your Windows Speech Recognition Macros shortcut to this location. By doing so, you allow the program to automatically start whenever you boot your computer.

So what exactly is this Windows Speech Recognition Macros thing you've just installed? To put it in simple terms, it's a cool little program that allows you to create custom automations for windows that execute whenever you say a trigger word or phrase. This is where you're going to want to put your imagination to use. This is also where you "Teach" your computer how to talk back to you. I'm going to show you a couple little scripts you can make to get you started.

Let's start with something simple. Think of a name for your computer... for this example I'm going to name my computer Jarvis (it seems only fitting). First, make sure your Speech Recognition is enabled, and Windows Speech Recognition Macros is running. In your task manager (the bottom right-hand corner of your task bar) double-click the Windows Speech Recognition Macros icon and when the window pops up asking "What should the macro do?" click "Advanced." For those of you familiar with creating websites, this should be a welcome site. WSRM uses XML for commands... which makes creating custom commands relatively simple. For those of you who aren't aware of XML, it's still easy. Here's a quick synopsis of what you're looking at:

<speechMacros> - This is the starting Tag, it just tells the computer that this XML file uses the Speech Macros to execute.

<command> - This is the command to be executed. Each command is basically one action... in most cases you will only need one, but for some automations you'll want to include more than one. You'll see an example of this later.

<listenFor></listenFor> - This tells the computer what word or phrase to listen for in order to do an action. Notice that there is a closing tag (</listenFor>), this tells the XML that this spot in the code is where to stop doing whatever function... in this case stop listening for a word or phrase once the computer hears it.

</command> - The closing tag for the "Command" tag... again, in XML every tag will have an opening/closing tag and what happens between the two is how it knows what to execute. In this case it knows that the command is finished once the word/phrase has been detected.

</speechMacros> - By now I think you can figure out why this is here.

Since I'm going to name my computer Jarvis, I'm going to tell my computer to listen for it's name by changing the <listenFor> tags to say the following:

The entire macro looks like this now:

So my computer is now listening for it's name, Jarvis... but nothing is going to happen. We have to give it a way to interact, so we're going to add the <speak></speak> tags which allow for the computer to speak whatever text we insert between the tags back to us. I want my computer to have a bad attitude, so I'm going to add the following:

Go ahead and hit "Save" then "Create" and then "OK." You might want to make sure you know where WSRM is saving your macros before you hit "Create" though... I just save mine in My Documents under a folder called "Speech Macros." Once you save these you can easily edit them by just double-clicking on the macro file.

You've now created your first speech macro. Now let's test it out! If you don't have your computer already listening for voice commands, just say "Start Listening." Once your computer has acknowledged that it's in listening mode, Now say "Jarvis." If you've done everything correctly, your computer will say "You're not Tony Stark! ALERT! ALERT!" in a female voice. If you're not a fan of the female voice, back in your control panel where you setup your speech recognition, on the left hand side there's an option called "Text to Speech" click on this and under the "Voice Selection" tab there's a couple you can choose from. Hopefully more people will start using speech recognition and force Microsoft to release cool voices. Wouldn't it be awesome if you could have Jarvis' actual voice or Darth Vader... or something cool like that? Go ahead and play around a bit with the <listenFor> and <speak> tags and create some macros that give the sense of interaction with your computer. On my old system... since I worked in a bar full of foul-mouthed rockstars, I had various four letter words programmed in so when someone would cuss, my computer would say "You shut your mouth when you're talking to me!" Just a little example of some of the fun you can have.

Making your computer respond with words is fun, but it can get old quick. So let's have your computer do some other functions using voice commands and macros. One of my favorites is a weather script I modified (it was originally on a Windows 7 forum so I don't take credit for writing this... only for modifying it for my own needs). This script is a little more in depth, but look through it a bit and see if you can figure out what it's going to do. Notice it's a two-part macro. (in case the pasted script doesn't work properly due to spacing/cut-n-paste factors, you can just download this macro here and extract it using winzip or some other utility.)

This macro does 3 things:

* Listens for the phrase "Pull Up The Weather In [City Name]" thus, starting up your default browser and sending it to weather.com with the city you named.

* Listens for the phrase "Is it cold in [City Name]?" thus, reading you the weather forecast for the mentioned city.

* Assigns the city name specified to the proper zip code so the computer can retrieve weather information for the designated city.

This macro also uses javascript to decipher some of the functions... but that's not important right now. I'm not a huge fan of javascript myself, and I certainly don't expect you to use it for your everyday macros, but in this macro it serves it's purpose. Now if you've actually looked at the code, you'll notice it has some serious limitations. First of all, it's only designed to choose from one of 2 cities... Columbia, Missouri (where I currently live... yes, feel sorry for me) and Nashville, Tennessee (where I used to live and should have stayed... AWESOME town!). So if you want this macro to choose from your own choice of cities, you need to change the city names and zip codes in the <item> tags. Someone who knows more about actual Javascript can probably come up with some better code that listens for any city and converts it into the proper zip... but obviously the author and my own skills are limited, so we'll just work with what's available. Besides, if you don't tell people... nobody will know that it's just simple scripting. It's not how the magic trick happens... it's how amazing the illusion seems to the target audience.

Having the weather forecast read to you is pretty cool, I've experimented a bit with some other text-to-speech automation scripts using RSS feeds (News, Sports, Etc) and I've found that while it actually works... most RSS feeds toss a lot of code into the descriptors, so sometimes it can sound pretty messy. You'll have to play around a bit and see what works best for you. If you come across anything cool along these lines, please let me know. I'm always looking to improve my speech macros. I'm also going to spend some time cleaning up our RSS feeds here at Torching Igloos and I'll create a macro for those so your computer can read you the Torching Igloos news.

While I was researching the various speech recognition functions of Windows 7, I was appalled to discover that some of the most common Windows tasks aren't supported (or are difficult to find information on). Some examples: Restart, Shutdown, Volume Up/Down, Empty Recycle Bin. You would think that as basic as these tasks pose to be, Microsoft would have included them in Speech Recognition. Well, if they did I certainly couldn't figure it out (hell, Einstein couldn't tie his shoes so it is completely possible that I'm just missing something obvious). So, here's a few macros to make some of these tasks simple. Unfortunately a few of them do require some outside assistance in order to function properly.

Restart Computer: (You say "Nuke It" and the computer acknowledges and restarts your system.)

Some other cool things to note while we're playing around with speech recognition, "Mouse grid" which brings up a grid for mouse movement, and a cool Firefox add-on called Firesaywhich allows you to control many of Firefox's functions using voice commands. With all of these new tools, and some creativity you can have your computer saying/doing all kinds of cool things. Try setting up play lists to suit your moods so when you come home from work, you can just tell your computer what kind of mood your in and it will automatically load up your favorite music player with the songs you want to hear. Invite over your girlfriend and impress her with music cued to certain words you say during a romantic dinner you've prepared for her (btw I'm single ladies). Setup your media center to start movies just by saying "I want to watch (insert movie name)" the possibilities are endless, and the ability is now yours. Now go impress somebody with your new found wizardry!

How To Install and Use ADB Tool

Android Debug Bridge (adb) is a useful utility that lets you communicate with Android device, emulator instance, and even Android Virtual Machine. Although adb offers many kinds of features for Android-powered devices like transferring files, installing apk applications, and remounting memory card. It is widely used to root Android smartphones.

There are 2 ways to install adb tool:

Install adb tool in Android SDK

Download and install Android SDK
Open SDK Manager and install Android SDK Platform-tools package
After finished installing, navigate the directory where Android SDK is installed

Press Shift key + right click on platform-tools folder and clickOpen command window here. Or,
you can also use Windows Command Prompt (MS-DOS) navigate to platform-tools (On my computer, adb.exe is locate in C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools)

cd c:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools

Dual Boot Android-x86 and Ubuntu

Wanted to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on your laptop/netbook like the Asus Transformer Android Tablet? A brief description for my scenario before setting up dual-booting environment with Android-x86 and Ubuntu. I have Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin running on my computer and going to dual boot with Android-x86 4.0 RC1 Ice Cream Sandwich. Be sure to readthis if you want to dual boot Android-x86 and Microsoft Windows.

Things you will need:

Android-x86 4.0 ISO (Download the iso which supports your computer. I download android-x86-4.0-RC1-asus_laptop.iso)
UNetbootin
USB Pen Drive

Let's begin. Assuming you are running Ubuntu on your computer,

Install UNetbootin from Ubuntu Software Center.
Insert USB Pen Drive and run UNetbootin.
Choose Diskimage radio button, then select the Android-x86 ISO. Click OK.

After UNetbootin installed bootloader, click Reboot Now to restart computer.
Enter into BIOS and change USB drive to first to boot USB Pen Drive when computer startup. Save the changes and it will restarts again.
You arrived on the UNetbootin bootloader, choose Installation - Install Android-x86 to harddisk to install Android-x86.
Choose the partition to install. You have to know your computer's harddisk partitions well. Example, sda1 = 1st partition, sda2 = 2nd partition, sda3 = 3rd partition, and so on.
Select Do not format to keep existing data. Else, choose a filesystem to format. Android-x86 should works on ext2, ext3, fat32 and ntfs. Note that the filesystem must match the partition id.
Choose Skip to skip boot loader GRUB installation. Otherwise, you will have to reinstall GRUB again with Live CD Ubuntu.
Choose No, not to let /system be read-write. Choose Yes if it is necessary for you to debug.
After Android-x86 installation is completed, it is optional to create a fake SD card. Having a fake SD card you are able to access apps which requires the existence of memory card like Gallery, Music Player, etc. 2046MB is the maximum size for fake SD card.
Select Reboot to restart computer.
Enter BIOS and change harddisk to boot first. Save and exit.
Boot into Ubuntu and open 40_custom GRUB file by entering the command in terminal:

gksu gedit /etc/grub.d/40_custom

Add the following code at very bottom of the 40_custom GRUB file:

menuentry "Android-x86 4.0 RC1" { set root='(hd0,3)' linux /android-4.0-RC1/kernel quiet root=/dev/ram0 androidboot.hardware=asus_laptop acpi_sleep=s3_bios,s3_mode SRC=/android-4.0-RC1 SDCARD=/data/sdcard.img initrd /android-4.0-RC1/initrd.img}

Note for code above:

I installed Android x86 on sda3, so I use (hd0,3). For example, if you installed on sda5, change it to (hd0,5).
Change asus_laptop to which iso you download. For example, if you're using eeepc iso, change it to eeepc.
Remove SDCARD=/data/sdcard.img if didn't create fake SD card.

Make it executable and update GRUB:

sudo chmod +x /etc/grub.d/40_custom sudo update-grub

Done. You should be able to dual boot Android-x86 and Ubuntu if you followed the steps above correctly. Note that you have to press and hold Shift key while your computer bootup in order to display GRUB menu. Otherwise, the menu won't shows up.

Run ARM Apps On Android x86 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich

Android x86 early adopters had various compatibility issues running Android on x86 CPU in the past. Now Android on x86 has getting better development and support. Thanks to the developers who spent many hours to hack to make things work. Buildroid's mastermind Daniel Fages who builds "Buildroid for VirtualBox" successfully runs ARM apps on Android x86 platforms.

Due to the Android x86 platforms are incompatibility with NDK apps which are compiled only for ARM processors, we can found lots of popular Android apps like Angry Birds and Acrobat Reader aren't compatible with Android x86. On Android Market/Google Play, it states "Your device isn't compatible with this version" on certain apps, kind of a letdown. Now with Fages' hack, we can download the ARM apps from Google Play app and run them on Android x86.

Fages' hack was based on Intel's Medfield-powered Android smartphone. He looked into the Intel's "binary translation" function that contains "houdini" library and ARM libraries, which enables ARM apps running. Also a modified "Dalvik"'s "libdvm" library. He used the libhoudini, ARM libraries, and libdvm on Android-x86 2.3.7 Gingerbread and the ARM apps works. However, Android Ice Cream Sandwich is much more complex that he can't just simply replace the Ice Cream Sandwich's libdvm. With hours of efforts, Fages managed to make it work finally.

Simple as usual, import the Buildroid OVA file to VirtualBox and it is ready to fire up. (Please click here for installation details)

If you get VirtualBox error message while starting Buildroid like this below:

To solve this, go to Settings > Network, change Attached to: NAT under Adapter 1tab. Buildroid should able to start. (It works for me)

Thoughts
Although not all ARM apps work correctly, it is a major step for Android x86 to supports huge number of Android applications. I ran Angry Birds Space on Android x86, it is very laggy. The game got slightly better on reduced screen resolution of 640 x 480 - 16 but still not on desired performance. I also installed Samsung Galaxy S3's S Voice on Android x86, the app runs without crashing but no mic supports. Please don't get frustrated if any apps don't work correctly because this is just a test version at this current stage. The whole operating system works without any problem on my computer so far.

Setup Hardware OpenGL for Linux Android x86 VirtualBox (also runs ARM apps)

As the post title, this Android x86 VirtualBox image runs ARM apps like Angry Birds games with OpenGL hardware acceleration. OpenGL is a standard specification cross-platform graphics API for 2D and 3D graphics processing hardware. The video below shows how the OpenGL performing with Angry Birds Space:

Here's how I setup Hardware OpenGL for Linux Android x86:
First of all, your computer must have graphics chipset with OpenGL hardware acceleration enabled. During this guide, I will setup this VirtualBox image on my HP mini 210 Ubuntu 12.04 Operating System. You'll need an Android x86 OVA file and buildroid_renderer package which can be download here.

Install VirtualBox from Ubuntu Software Center.
Open VirtualBox, click File > Import Appliance... to import the Android OVA. After import, don't start the Android Virtual Machine yet.
If you already have libGL.so in /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/ directory, ignore this step. If you don't have it, please install libgl1-mesa-dev package (sudo apt-get install libgl1-mesa-dev) and you should have libGL.so in that directory.
Extract the buildroid_renderer package. (tar -xvzf buildroid_renderer_XXXXXXXX.tgz)
Open Terminal and navigate to buildroid_renderer package location and execute buildroid.sh (./buildroid.sh) and a blank window appear.
Now start your Android Virtual Machine in VirtualBox. Wait for awhile the blank window will show up the Android 4.0.4 ICS user interface.

You can change the window size while executing buildroid.sh For example,./buildroid.sh -width 640 -height 480 the window size will open in 640 x 480 size.

Fix: iTunes Error 3194 When Restoring/Updating iOS

If you've been trying to update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you might have encountered the iTunes error message saying that your iDevice could not be restored because an unknown error occurred (3194).

Getting error 3194 is most probably because you have been using TinyUmbrella, it has set your system's host file pointing to Cydia's SHSH caching server.

To fix iTunes error 3194, simply open TinyUmbrella, uncheck Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit in Advanced tab. Open iTunes and try upgrade again. The error message shouldn't appear anymore.

Add "Open in Chrome" Bookmark in iOS Safari

Google Chrome for iOS platform is the most popular free iOS app since the release in last week. The sign shows Chrome is a welcome addition to iOS users. However, due to the Apple's restrictions to third-party iOS web browsers, the users can't change their default web browser in iOS. It could be the security reason but it seems the actions of Apple allowing third-party web browsers for download in App Store contradict their restrictions for changing the default web browser in iOS. The choice of web browser needs to be universally changeable, otherwise it never feels right to use third party web browser in iOS.

The default web browser in iOS can be changed by a free jailbreak tweak called Browser Changer. It also allows you to open the Home Screen Shortcuts with the browser of your choice. Browser Changer can be found in BigBoss repo. See the Browser Changer in action:

If you don't wish to jailbreak your iOS device, there is a workaround with the helps of javascript code by Jon Abrams which will launch the current page in Chrome by tapping the bookmark. Here's how to do it:

Copy this code:

Launch Safari and bookmark any webpage you like.
Open Safari bookmarks, tap Edit button.
Rename it to "Open in Chrome" or any name you want.
Replace the URL by pasting the javascript code.

This bookmark will open the current page you are visiting in Safari with Chrome. Not the best solution but definitely come in handy on non-jailbroken devices. For your information, the Home Screen Shortcuts won't work because the URL can't be customized.

Those who have tried to run Android-x86 on Virtualbox before probably know its Internet connection is not playing well together with Virtualbox. Here's a good news, Daniel Fages is building Android operating system which support to run in Virtualbox named 'Buildroid for VirtualBox'. After trying it, this is the best Android virtual machine I have tried so far. Everything is working, including Internet.

How to Install Windows on Mac?

There's been a lot written about Apple's dramatic release of Boot Camp, a free download that lets you repartition your Intel-based Mac's drive and install Windows XP as an alternative operating system, but even the magazine coverage I've seen doesn't give you screen-by-screen details. So let's see what we can do about that!
Your first step is to make sure you have an Intel-based Mac: any G4 or G5 Mac will not install Boot Camp and you won't be able to dual boot into Windows XP. You can still run an emulator like Microsoft Virtual PC, but it's an inferior solution and my own experience with VPC has been that it's glacial and useless for all but the most simplistic of Windows applications. You'll also need to be able to burn a CD during the process: make sure you have a blank, burnable CD disk on hand.
Now, download Boot Camp from the Apple site and double click on the ".dmg" disk image that's dropped onto your desktop. Here's what you'll see:
Your first step, as highlighted in the "Read Before You Install" document, is to print a copy of the Boot Camp Beta Installation & Setup Guide. Trust me, you'll want it!
Double-click on the "BootCampAssistant.pkg" icon and you'll be able to install the Boot Camp assistant:
As with all Mac software installs, this will require you to type in your administrative password. It's probably the same as your default account password:
A few seconds of activity later, you'll have the software successfully copied onto your computer and can quit this first installer.
Now your first challenge: finding the new installation assistant! It turns out that the program is installed on your computer in Applications --> Utilities --> Boot Camp Assistant. Launch it and it's quite possible you'll see the same message I did:
No huge problem. Quit by clicking the "Quit" button, then go to Apple's Support Downloads and check their Available Firmware Updates list to click directly to the firmware update for your own Intel system. For my Mini, I simply go back to the downloads page and scan down for the name of my system.
Once the correct firmware update is installed, you need to reboot, but not in the usual fashion. Instead, press and hold the power button on the Mini itself -- it takes about ten seconds -- until the power indicator light flashes repeatedly to begin the update. Your system will boot and you'll see the Apple icon and a progress bar:
That will advance, it took me about 90 seconds total, and you'll reboot again, ready to go!
Finally, we're ready to actually start working with Boot Camp itself. The first step is to read all of Apple's warnings:
Okay, now let's proceed. First choice: do we want to burn a Macintosh Drivers CD, which contains important device drivers for Windows XP so it can access the various hardware parts of the Mac, or do we already have one. I don't already have one, so I'll choose the default of "Burn a Macintosh Drivers CD now":
I slip in the blank disk and the system tells me it's "ready to burn". Click "Burn" and it'll do everything necessary to create the Windows XP drivers CD. This took a few minutes on my Mini, but it wasn't terribly long.
Next step is much more exciting: it's time to partition the hard disk!
Partitioning is a geeky buzzword for something that will actually make a lot of sense to you, believe it or not. The idea is that if you have a large hard disk, why not configure it to act like two small hard disks? Or three? In this way, smart system administrators can isolate accounts, minimize out-of-disk-space errors and disruptions, and so on. With Apple Boot Camp, we'll want to partition the default disk to allow us to have one "disk" that represents the Windows XP world, and another "disk" that represents Mac OS X.
By default, Boot Camp offers up a pretty tiny partition for Windows, as you can see:
I'd recommend that you make it bigger if you're actually going to use Windows for anything important; Microsoft recommends 10GB as the smallest reasonable and functional partition, for example. If you're just playing, however, 5GB will probably work fine (until your first big game install). I'll make mine 8GB to be somewhere in the middle.
Change the partition sizes by clicking and dragging on the vertical bar between the two areas until you have the size or sizes you desire. With my Mini configuration, it left me with 66GB for Mac OS X, of which 20GB is free, and 8GB for Windows XP.
Once the partitions are set up as you desire, click on "Partition" and keep your fingers crossed (there is a slight chance it'll actually mangle everything on the disk. Not likely, but I would definitely recommend you do one good, clean backup before you start experimenting with Boot Camp).
The disk partition is what we Windows folk call non-destructive or dynamic, which means that you don't have to reformat and then reinstall everything on both "sides" of the partition. That's a very, very good thing. :-)
Once the partitioning is done, you're ready to install Windows itself:
Fortunately, I have a pristine new copy of Microsoft Windows XP Pro with SP2 included for PCs without Windows (who would have thought I'd think of my Mac as a PC without Windows?) and that's what I'll use. My thanks to Microsoft for sending it along...
Insert the WinXP installation DVD, wait for it to be recognized by Mac OS X (it'll show up on your desktop with a cheery name like "VRMFPP_EN"), click on "Start Installation" and kiss Mac OS X goodbye.
After a bit, you'll see the unfamiliar blue screen of a Windows installation:
Press ENTER or Return on the keyboard to continue, agree to the Microsoft warnings and legal restrictions page, and you'll finally get to the "choose partition" list:
Take your time here to ensure that you pick the correct partition! You want to use Partition C: which should match the size you just set too: notice on my screen it's 8407MB, which is about 8GB, as expected. Move the highlight bar down to the correct partition and press Enter to actually install WinXP.
Now you need to pick a partition formatting option. The two main choices are NTFS or FAT. NTFS is more modern and supports very large partitions, but can't interoperate with Mac OS X. FAT, on the other hand, can't support partitions larger than 32GB, but is compatible with the Mac. You'll see why that's important later. For now, select FAT and do a full, not a quick, format:
Now some time will pass while the partition is formatted using the Windows FAT32 format. It took my system about five minutes to fill in the progress bar:
I won't document every single step involved in installing Windows XP as it's pretty straightforward. Just make sure you have your product key available for the verification step of the process. It's in the package within the Microsoft Windows XP disk, and it's really a good idea to use a new version of the OS rather than the same key you've used with other PCs in your office or home. Worst case, you can skip the verification step and have 30 days of "trial period" before you have to deal with finding a valid key to enter for verification purposes.
Once you've finished the full Windows XP install, which can take rather quite a while, your system will reboot and you'll want to eject the WinXP install disk and slip in the Mac drivers CD you burned earlier in the process.
With Windows, this is done by going to My Computer and right-clicking on the optical drive D: then selecting Eject. Slip in the Mac disk and everything should just automatically launch and start up. If not, look for and double click on the file Install Macintosh Drivers for Win XP.exe. Here's what you'll see:
I admit, it's kind of weird to see a Mac installation program running within Windows XP on a Mac computer, but it's a brave new world out there.
Probably, during the installation process, you'll learn that various components of your Intel-based Macintosh haven't passed the Microsoft Windows compatibility test:
Apple assures us that it's safe to continue anyway, so I did. Three times!
Then you get to go through a few waves of "new hardware found", and in all cases you can simply accept all the default settings for each wizard, as those guys in Redmond call 'em, and proceed. Finally, you'll get to the last configuration screen:
Click "reboot now" and if the hardware compatibility Gods are smiling upon you, the Mac will reboot right into Windows and you'll be the proud owner of a Macintosh that can run Windows natively, astonishingly enough.
One last tip: to select which OS you want to run, hold down the OPTION key when you start up the Mac and you'll be able to see both Mac OS X and Windows XP:
Use the arrow keys to move to the choice you desire, then press Enter or RETURN to select it and zoom into that mode.
When you do boot into Mac OS X, you'll notice that there's a new hard disk on your desktop too, called "NO NAME". Click on the name, count to five, and click again, then type "Windows XP" and you'll forevermore realize what it is. And yes, you can navigate through it and find your data files from when you're running Windows, but I'll talk about that in another article!

Learn binary code

Learning the Binary Code System couldn't be easier with the system you are about to read.
Typically when trying to convert binary into numbers people refer to a chart of some sort to get their numbers. From now on you will be able to convert numbers into Binary and Binary into numbers within seconds.

What you need to learn is the Binary Code. Essentially all you need to do is memorize the numbers 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256 etc... The pattern here is add the number to itself to get the next number. It's that easy. 1 plus 1 is 2. 2 + 2 is four, 4 + 4 is 8 etc...
The Binary Code is a series of 1's and 0's (ones and zeros).
A binary number looks like this: 110011
Remember those numbers I should you? 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 etc?
When you are learning the binary code, all I ask you to do is write the numbers in reverse. So:

See how this is written? We start with 1, then 2, 4, 8, 16 etc and it is done right to left. This is important as it makes learning the Binary Number System a piece of cake.

Now what you need to do is image underneath the Binary Number System is putting either a 1 or a 0 (one or a zero) under each number, starting from the right to the left.

So if we were to put a 0 underneath the number 1 in the chart above, then a number 1 under number two above, then another 1 above number four we would have an image like this:

Where 1 1 0 is the Binary Number.

So how do we convert 110 into a number? Simple. Wherever there is a 1 add the numbers above it together. In this case add the 4 and 2 giving 6.

Therefore 110 in binary is 6 in decimal.

So how about doing this in reverse? What is 22 in binary? What we need to do is put a 1 underneath all the numbers that will allow us to add up to 22. We can't use 32 as it is over 22. We can use 16 and the numbers below. But we need to use the numbers until they add up to 22.

So let's try it.

16 + 8 = 24 so that brings us over 22 and we know then we can't use 8 next.

16 + 4 = 20. Ok so we are nearly there. 20 + 2 = 22 great we reached out number. So with the Binary Number System just mark off underneath the numbers a 1 wherever we used the number. Where we didn't use the number put a 0.

So we can now see that the number 22 in Binary is equal to 10110.

Microsoft Excel dapat digunakan sebagai database terbatas untuk menyalin nomor ke dalam format lain. Salah satu format yang berguna adalah kode bar standar, yang hanya merupakan font yang dapat diinstal dalam Windows. Ada dua jenis font bar code, yang disebut "kode-39" dan "kode-128". "Kode-128" kode bar memiliki carriage return spesifik dan "ruang" simbol, sementara "kode-39" font bar code tidak. Ketika membuat kode bar yang membutuhkan carriage return, "kode-128" font adalah salah satu yang diperlukan.

Caranya:

1. Download "Kode-128" bar huruf kode jika tidak telah terinstal di sistem Anda, Windows Vista dan Windows 7 baik datang dengan font kode-128 sebagai bagian dari paket font mereka default. Klik kanan pada file zip. Dan uncompress isinya.

2. Copy isi ke folder FONTS untuk sistem Anda, ini biasanya di C: \ WINDOWS \ folder.

3. Pastikan bahwa Kunci Nomor diaktifkan ke "On" (ini adalah "NumLock" tombol pada keyboard Anda.

4. Mulai Excel, kemudian masukkan informasi ID Anda ingin mengkonversi ke dalam format kode bar di kolom A. Sisipkan simbol carriage return ASCII dengan menekan "Alt" dan memasukkan "0109" dengan keypad numerik.

5. Masukkan formula "= A1" dalam sel B1. Pilih sel B1 dan mengubah font ke "Barcode-128."

6. Copy sel B1 dan paste ke bawah untuk baris sebanyak yang Anda masukkan nomor ID pada Langkah 4. Anda akan berakhir dengan dua kolom, salah satunya dengan data numerik untuk produk Anda, dan yang lainnya dengan kode bar yang cocok, diformat dengan benar.

Seharian ini rencananya mau bikin list untuk majalah PC Media dan info Linux.. udah bikin kotak di MS. 2. lalu menu Edit lalu pilih Insert Barcode
3. Beri nama barcode-nya next,

Jika temen2 belum membaca artikel cara mengubah webcam menjadi CCTV, saya sarankan untuk dibaca dulu, soalnya artikel ini saling terkait. Sebelumnya ada syarat agar CCTV bisa di akses oleh komputer lain ( hehe..ada syarat segala) Syaratnya adalah komputer yang di pake buat memasang CCTV dan perangkat (komputer, laptop, HP) yang di pake buat melihat CCTV harus punya koneksi internet.

Sekarang kita akan membahas tentang tentang tips/cara menjadikan iPhone sebagai modem WiFi, maksud gini, iPhone kita akan kita jadikan sebagai modem, tapi tanpa perantaran/menyambungkan melalui USB, tapi kita langsung bisa melayari internet di komputer tanpa membutuhkan USB lagi, mantap khannn....!! Ni sedikit cerita, karena saya selalu membuka internet di laptop tapi dulu nya selalu menjadikan iPhone sebagai modem yg di hubungkan melalui USB, sehingga iPhone menjadi panas, dan kemungkin besar kalau iPhone udah terlalu panas akan rusak, kan sayang kalau iPhone yg kita sayangi tiba-tiba rusak di sebabkan terlalu panas, nah.. Untuk menghindari hal-hal yg tidak kita ingankan terjadi inilah solusi yg terbaik karena dengan cara menjadikan iPhone sebagai modem WiFi iPhone kita akan relatif normal dan tidak panas walaupun kita layari internet di laptop berjam-jam!

Bahan-bahan yg kita perlukan tidak terlalu susah kita dapat dan bisa kita perolehi secara gratis, tapi software ini khusus untuk iPhone yg telah melakukan proses JailBreak,bagi anda yg udah jailbreak silakan cari software nya di cydia,

So.. Inilah cara nya yg harus anda perhatikan baik2,
1. Buka cydia dan klik "search"
2. Ketik "Mywi" dalam kotak pencarian yg telah di sediakan,
3. Install mywi tersebut,

Tapi jika setelah anda cari di cydia dan mywi nya tidak ada, anda harus melakukan cara ini terlebih dahulu, setelah tutorial ini selesai baru anda lakukan cara di atas dari no 1/3, karena kemungkina juga di cydia anda belum ada mywi nya!
Nah perhatikan baik2,
1. Buka cydia di iPhone anda,
2. Pilih "Manage"
3. Touch di tulisan "Sources"
4. Pilih "Edit" yg ada di posisi kanan atas cydia anda,
5. Sentuh "Add" yg berada di kiri cydia anda,

7. Touch tulisan "Add Source"

Okay.. Kalau itu udah anda add, barulah anda cari balik Mywi nya di cydia, dan install sampai selesai, kalau udah install ikuti lagi cara2 berikut ;)

Inilah cara menjadikan iPhone sebagai mode WiFi:
1. Silakan on kan WiFi di setting iPhone nya terlebih dahulu.
2. Buka software (mywi) yg anda download tadi,
3. Touch tepat pada gambar Laptop nya yg ada tulisan "Laptops"
4. Pilih Fatest setup: WiFi Hotspot,
5. Lalu "WiFi Hotspot" di on kan kalau masih dalam keadaan off,
6. Hotspot Name, itu bisa anda gantikan nama nya sesuai dengan kemauan anda,
7. Buka laptop anda dan cari dan connect WiFi nya sesuai dengan nama yg anda isi tadi di Mywi
8. Selamat menjelajahi internet via iPhone mode WiFi.

How to change a BlackBerry to be a pc's/laptop's modem

Untuk Internetan dengan menggunkan BlackBerry sebagai modem caranya sangat mudah tinggal setting BlackBerry dan ikuti langkah-langkah yang ada di bawah ini untuk menjadikan BlackBerry sebagai modem untuk internetan.

1. Anda harus menjalankan BlackBery Desktop Manager, lalu hubungkan komputer/laptop anda dengan BlackBerry melalui kabel data yang tersedia. BlackBery Desktop Manager bisa didapat dari CD yang menyertai pembelian BlackBerry Asli, atau dapat didownload di website BlackBerry.

2. Buka Control Panel pada windows, pilih Phone and Modem Options.

3. Pada kotak Phone and Modem Options, klik tab Modem

4. Klik pada Standart Modem – COMxx. Jika anda pernah menginstal modem lain, maka pada The following modems are installed, bisa jadi tidak hanya berisi 1 modem Standart Modem. Kode COMxx adalah menerangkan nomor port COM USB yang menjadi target hubungan antara komputer/laptop dengan BlackBerry anda. Jika anda telah mencolokkan kabel data hubungan tersebut pada salah satu colokan USB pada komputer/laptop anda, maka selanjutnya penggunaan modem Blackberry hanya bisa dilakukan pada colokan USB saat anda menginstal.

5. Klik tombol Properties.

6. Pada kotak dialog Standart Modem Properties yang baru muncul, klik tab Diagnostics.

7. Klik Query Modem

8. Perhatikan informasi yang muncul, jika BlackBerry anda terhubung dengan baik, maka akan muncul informasi ATxx – Research In Motion BlackBerry IP Modem. Jika anda telah menginstal banyak modem, maka informasi yang muncul pun akan banyak sesuai modem yang telah terinstal. Pastikan bahwa Research In Motion BlackBerry IP Modem ada dalam informasi tersebut.

9. Masih pada kotak dialog yang sama, klik tab Advanced. Lalu pada Extra initialization commands, tuliskan kode berikut sesuai dengan kartu provider :untuk Telkomsel :

- Buka Control Panel, pilih Network Connection

- Pilih Set up my connection manually
- Klik Next
- Pilih Connect using a dial up modem
- Klik Next
- Pilih modem sesuai dengan settingan awal (diatas) tadi yaitu Standart Modem
- Klik Next
- Tulis untuk nama ISP (ISP Name), misalnya : My BlackBerry Modem
- Klik Next
- Isikan Phone Number dengan nomor *99# atau *99***1#
- Klik Next
- Untuk Username dan Passwoord tidak perlu diisikan.
- Klik Next
- Klik Finish
- Pada Control Panel – Network Connection, icon My BlackBerry Modem (sesuai nama yang anda berikan) bisa dipindahkan atau di-send ke desktop, agar gampang ketika menggunakannya.

Cara Menjalankan BlackBerry sebagai modem
- Jalankan BlackBerry Desktop Manager
- Hubungkan BlackBerry ke komputer/laptop
- Klik icon My Blackberry Modem yang anda buat tadi
- Klik Dial

Bagaimana Cara Membuat Aplikasi Android?

Pengantar

Kalau bahas Android, pasti pikiran kita terlintas pada sebuah perangkat bergerak (mobile) touch screen yang saat ini sedang marak macam Galaxy tab dll. Ya memang, produk yang saya sebut tadi meggunakan android untuk sistem operasinya. Android sendiri adalah sistem operasi yang dikembangkan oleh Google yang berbasis Linux dan bersifat open source. Perkiraan saya beberapa waktu ke depan sistem operasi ini bakal naik daun terus. Makanya, mumpung masih ada kesempatan, yuk belajar bikin aplikasi berbasis Android! Kali-kali bisa jadi ladang rejeki

Persiapan

Pada tutorial android ini yang kita perlukan untuk membuat aplikasi Android adalah seperangkat PC dengan OS Windows, Mac OS X ataupun Linux (bacaSystem Requirement). Setelah itu download aplikasi-aplikasi di bawah ini sebagai:

JDK (Java Development Kit). Sesuaikan dengan OS yang kita punya.
Android SDK.
Eclipse IDE for Java Developer, sebenarnya pake Netbans juga bisa, tapi saya lebih nyaman pakai Eclipse.

Oke, kalau semua sudah terdownload, mari kita install satu persatu.

Instalasi

JDK

Dobel klik file executable yang sudah didownload tadi. Ikuti instruksi sampai selesai. Kemudian tekan tombol Finish.

Android SDK

Untuk menginstall Android SDK, kita membutuhkan koneksi internet yang bagus karena pada proses instalasinya nanti, Android SDK akan melakukan proses download file pendukung yang terbilang cukup besar (total lebih dari 300MB tergantung apa saja yang ingin kita install).

Oke, langsung klik dua kali file executablenya. Ikuti langkah-langkahnya sampai proses instalasi selesai.

Andoid SDK Tools dll

Setelah proses instalasi Android SDK selesai, jalankan aplikasi SDK Manager yang terdapat pada Start Program>Android SDK Tools. See picture below

Silahkan pilih versi Android yang ingin diinstall, saya rekomendasi minimal Android versi 2.2 (API 8) yang Anda install. Perlu diketahui, aplikasi yang didevelop menggunakan versi Android lebih tinggi tidak bisa dibuka pada android versi di bawahnya. Untuk proses ini, harap bersabar ya, karena cukup memakan waktu lama apalagi kalau koneksi internetnya pas pasan. Komputer saya saja terpaksa saya “panjer” karena kecepatan internet cuma 20 KB/s.

Oke, Klik Install untuk memulai proses intalasinya. Tunggu sampai proses selesai ya.

Membuat AVD (Android Virtual Device)

AVD atau istilah lainnya emulator adalah aplikasi Android yang bisa kita gunakan untuk mengujicobakan aplikasi yang sudah kita buat. Cara membuatnya adalah klik menu pada Start Program>Android SDK Tools>AVD manager.Setelah muncul, klik tombol New pada bagian kanan. Akan muncul seperti ini.
Setelah itu, klik AVD yang baru saya kita buat, kemudian klik tombol start untuk mencobanya. Berikut ini hasil AVD yang sudah saya buat.

Bisa buat online, bisa buat FBan.

Oke. Sampai pada proses ini kita telah berhasil menginstalasi Android SDK pada PC kita. Selanjutnya adalah proses instalasi Eclipse sebagai IDE softwarenya.

Install Eclipse IDE

Untuk Eclipse, cara menginstallnya adalah cukup dengan mengekstrak file yang sudah didownload tadi ke direktori yang kita inginkan, misalnya C:\eclipse. Buat shortcut untuk memudahkan pengoperasiannya kemudian letakkan pada dekstop. Setelah itu jalankan eclipse dan setting workspacenya sebagai tempat menyimpan semua project, misal C:\eclipse\workspace.

Install Plugin ADT untuk Eclipse

Agar Eclipse bisa langsung terintegrasi dengan Android SDK yang sudah kita install sebelumnya, kita harus menginstall plugin ADT for Eclipse. Caranya adalah jalankan Eclipse kemudian klik menu Help > Install New Software. kemudian tambahkan repository baru.

Klik OK kemudian tunggu beberapa saat hingga muncul seperti ini.
centang Android Development Tools, klik Next dan ikuti langkah instalasi sampai selesai. Tanda instalasi berhasil adalah akan muncul menu seperti gambar di bawah ini:

Akhirnya selesai sudah instalasi eclipsenya, Android developmennyapun siap digunakan. Happy Coding..

Windows 8 adalah nama sistem operasi (OS) untuk versi mendatang dari Microsoft Windows. Versi ini membawa banyak perubahan dari OS Sebelumnya, termasuk didukungnya Microprocessor ARM selain prosesor Intel/AMD x86 sehingga mempercepat penggunaan Windows 8 di komputer layar sentuh seperti Tablet.
Antarmuka Windows 8 yang bernama "Metro UI" (didasarkan pada OS Windows Phone 7) mempermudah pengoperasian di Tablet/Slate (Tetapi bisa dinonaktifkan di versi PC biasa). Microsoft mengeluarkan versi Developer Preview untuk menampung feedback dari developer di seluruh dunia, untuk pembangunan Windows 8 yang lebih baik.

SEJARAH

Di Consumer Electronics Show 2011 di Las Vegas, Microsoft Mengumumkan Bahwa akan mensertakan dukungan untuk sistem-di-chip (System-on-a-chip) (SoC) dan mobile ARM processors di Windows 8.

Versi 32-bit Milestone 1, build 7850, dengan tanggal build 22 September 2010, telah dibocorkan ke BetaArchive, sebuah komunitas beta luring, yang tidak lama kemudian bocor untuk P2P / jaringan berbagi torrent pada 12 April 2011. Milestone 1 Mensertakan antarmuka 'ribbon' seperti yang dimiliki Microsoft Office 2010 untuk Windows Explorer, sebuah Pembaca PDF yang disebut Modern Reader, pembaharuan task manager yang disebut Modern Task Manager, dan ISO Mounting Bawaan.

Versi 32-bit Milestone 2, build 7955, dibocorkan ke BetaArchive pada 25 April 2011. Fitur build ini adalah sebuah 'pattern login' baru dan seterusnya.

Versi 64-bit Milestone 3, build 7959, dibocorkan lagi ke BetaArchive pada 1 May 2011. build ini dianggap penting sebagai bocoran publik pertama Windows Server 8, serta build 64-Bit yang pertama kali bocor.

Sistem minimum yang diperlukan oleh Windows 8 sama saja seperti Windows 7 (dengan tambahan resolusi layar harus 1024x768 untuk interface Metro UI, dan layar multisentuh untuk menikmati fitur-fiturnya)
