No true, born-again, Reformation Bible believing Christian should ever observe “Christmas,” or rather, the “Merry Mass of Christ.” The holiday is an utter blasphemy forbidden to be celebrated by the godly Puritans in their colony of Massachusetts. This wicked feast of the devil first known as “Saturnalia” only began to be officially observed with the presidency of Episcopalian Jesuit Temporal Coadjutor President Franklin Pierce (1853-1857)—the man who used Commodore Perry to open up Japan in 1853 having been closed to the Jesuits for over 200 years. Of Rome and her Christmas, the great Scottish minister Alexander Hislopwrote in 1858:

“If Rome be indeed the Babylon of the Apocalypse, and the Madonna enshrined in her sanctuaries be the very queen of heaven, for the worshipping of whom the fierce anger of God was provoked against the Jews in the days of Jeremiah, it is of the last consequence that the fact should be established beyond all possibility of doubt; for that being once established, every one who trembles at the Word of God must shudder at the very thought of giving such a system, either individually or nationally, the least countenance or support. Something has been said already that goes far to prove the identity of the Roman and Babylonian systems; but at every step the evidence becomes still more overwheming. That which arises from comparing the different festivals is peculiarly so.

“The festivals of Rome are innumerable; but five of the most important may be singled out for elucidation—viz., Christmas-day, Lady-day, Easter, the nativity of St. John, and the Feast of the Assumption. Each and all of these can be proved to be Babylonian. And first, as to the festival in honour of the birth of Christ, or Christmas. How comes it that that festival was connected with the 25th of December? There is not a word in the Scriptures about the precise day of His birth, or the time of the year when He was born. What is recorded there, implies that at what time soever His birth took place, it could not have been on the 25th of December. . . .

“Indeed, it is admitted by the most learned and candid writers of all parties that the day of our Lord’s birth cannot be determined, and that within the Christian Church no such festival as Christmas was ever heard of till the third century, and that not till the fourth century [after the creation of the Roman Papacy at Constantine's Council of Nicaea, AD 325---EJP] was far advanced did it gain much observance. How, then, did the Romish Church fix on December the 25th as Christmas-day? Why, thus: long before the fourth century, and long before the Christian era itself, a festival was celebrated among the heathen, at that precise time of the year, in honour of the birth of the son of the Babylonian queen of heaven. . . . In Egypt, the son of Isis, the Egyptian title for the queen of heaven, was born at this very time, ‘about the time of the winter solstice.’ The very name by which Christmas is popularly known among ourselves —Yule day—proves at once its Pagan and Babylonian origin. ‘Yule’ is the Chaldee name for an ‘infant’ or ‘little child;’ and the 25th of December was called by our Pagan Anglo-Saxon ancestors, ‘Yule-day,’ or the ‘Child’s day,’ and the night that preceded it, ‘Mother-night,’ long vefore they came in contact with Christianity, that sufficiently proves it real character. Far and wide, in the realms of Paganism, was this birth-day observed. . . . But there is indubitable evidence that the festival in question had a much higher reference than this—that it commemorated not merely the figurative birth-day of the sun in the renewal [longitudinal reversal---EJP] of its course, but the birth-day of the grand Deliverer. . . .

“Now the Yule log is the dead stock of Nimrod, deified as the sun-god, but cut down by his enemies; the Christmas-tree is Nimrod redivivus [revived to new life, EJP]—the slain god come to live again. . . .

“There can be no doubt, then, that the Pagan festival at the winter solstice—in other words, Christmas—was held in honour of the birth of the Babylonian Messiah [the slain Nimrod reborn as Tammuz, and in Egypt, the slain Osiris reborn as Horus---EJP]. . . .
“The thing is incredible. Lady-day and Christmas-day, then, are purely Babylonian.”*

Thus Christmas—the Merry Mass of Christ—is the present day observance ofSatan’s coming Babylonian Messiah. In Babylon he was Nimrod reborn from Mother Semiramis as Tammuz; in Egypt he was Osiris reborn from Mother Isis as Horus. This great prophetic myth of Satan is to be literally fulfilled in the coming Antichrist/Man-Beast of I John 2:18/Revelation 13:3-10. But from whence shall this prophecy be fulfilled? From no other place than the Jesuit Roman Papacy! For every pope is, in fact, an acting Osiris, the vicar of the long-awaited Horus. The final pope of Rome will be slain to be reborn from Holy Mother Church as “the beast” (Daniel 7:11; Revelation 13:3-10) Indeed, the final pope—Roman Papal Caesar—is to be slain, the tree cut down in the forest. He then will be brought back to life to recover from his mortal sword wound (Revelation 13:14), the tree brought into the home for decoration. He will then be possessed by Satan (disembodied Lucifer), the tree topped with a star—”Lucifer” being “the star of the morning” (Isaiah 14:12). And the means, Satan’s foremost great Second Cause to bring his ancient, prophetic, Babylonian myth to pass is none other than the diabolicalSociety of Jesus which is in fact, Satan’s Society of Horus!

When you hear the word "Halloween" what images appear? What "spirit" is invoked at the whisper of Halloween? Halloween openly promotes death, devils, witches and flagrant "appearances of evil" (1 Thess. 5:22). Halloween leaves most people scratching their heads questioning, "How and where did Halloween come from"? This article unearths the hellish tomb of Halloween to exhume its sinister "covenant with death and hell."

Halloween began over 2,000 years ago among the Celts and their pagan priests called the Druids. The Druids are, without question, history’s king of the occult. Witchcraft, Satanism, paganism and virtually all facets of the occult acquire instruction from the Druids. From the popular jack-o’-lantern, trick-or-treat, costumes, to the pranks, ghoulish ghosts, demons, goblins and witches – Halloween owes its morbid birth to the Druids.

Samhain occurred on November 1 and signified the death of summer. Samhain, a night celebrating death and hell, was the Druids most important ritual. It was a terrifying night of human sacrifices. And it was the original Halloween.

The Druids believed, during Samhain, the mystic veil separating the dead from the living opened. The Druids taught these roaming spirits loosed on Samhain went searching for a body to possess. The frightened Celts would masquerade as demons, evil spirits and ghosts, hoping to convince the roaming evil spirits, they were another evil spirit, and leave them alone. The Celts also prepared meals as "treats" to appease the evil spirits from "tricks" or malicious acts; hence our custom of "trick or treat." May I remind you, this is what occurred on the original Halloween night! Today, Halloween lives and breathes with the foul stench of the diabolical Druids.

The Druids also celebrated the festival of Beltane. The word Beltane (Beltaine, Beltinne, Beltain, Beiltein) literally means the "fires of Bel." Bel is the same god called Baal, found over 80 times in the King James Bible. The Lord condemns Baal worship probably more than any other false "god."

Agenda 21 isn’t coming. It is here. Most don’t know about it. They’ve never heard of it, but it is creeping in the back door right now. So, look behind you. It may already be in your backyard.

What is Agenda 21? It is a United Nation’s program presented and approved in Rio in 1992. At that time American conservatives laughed it off. “This is too crazy,” they said. “Impossible. It will never happen. Not here!” Well, it is happening. It is happening here and it is happening now. Agenda 21 and related programs will eliminate many things we hold dear. These have been declared “unsustainable” and will be abolished. Here are some of them:

All private property rights (property ownership)
All forms of irrigation, pesticides & commercial fertilizer
Livestock production and most meat consumption
Privately owned vehicles and personal travel
Use of fossil fuels for power generation or mechanized travel
Single family homes
Most forms of mineral extraction and timber harvesting
Human population must be reduced to fewer than 1 billion people

It’s not coming from Washington D.C. or state legislatures for the most part. It is seeping in through local city and county governments. Agenda 21 brings with it stealthy code words, comforting words such as “smart growth,” “social justice,” “bio-diversity,” and “sustained development.” You will hear them often. Translated these terms effectively mean total environmental dictatorship and the elevation of the pagan practice of the worship of Mother Earth. Not a joke.

Jesuit Papacy Endgame: Slain/Risen Pope turned Antichrist/Man-Beast to Rule World

The Reformers were right! Every pope is an antichrist and the devil’s Roman papacy (later supercharged and fully Jesuitized by 1814) is the dynasty of the antichrist popes. What they missed was the scriptural truth that the final Roman Papal Caesar (Daniel 9:26-27) will be murdered and rise from the dead (Revelation 13:3-5), then to be the one-of-a-kind Antichrist/Man-Beast. These prophecies about this most powerful of Satan’s popes yet to come is the foundation of Satan’s foremost prophetic myth—of the slain and risen Horus possessed by Set/Satan then to rule the world from rebuilt Babylon city as the invincible Phoenix-King.

Presently, it is the Jesuit Papacy and its International White Power Structure, administering the Black Pope’s International Intelligence Community perfected during the pope’s Cold War Hoax (1945-1990), that rules the world from Rome. Indeed, Rome, sitting on seven hills/mountains (Revelation 17:9),“is that great city which reigneth over the kings of the earth” (Revelation 17:18).

When the last and final Roman Papal Caesar/“Pontifex Maximus” comes to power, one of his acts will be to confirm an existing international peace treaty/covenant for seven years (Daniel 9:26-27).

This covenant/treaty will be for the security of Jerusalem (Daniel 9:24, 27). Finally “peace and safety” will have arrived for Israel, the pope’s revived “Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem.” The world will rejoice, the Israeli-Arab conflict (secretly perpetuated by Rome since the pope’s inception of Israel in 1948) will have ended. The final pope will be a world hero—for 1260 days!

Towards the ending of the 1260 days (the first half of the 70th week of Daniel yet future) this final Roman Papal Caesar will undergo a change. This Seventh Roman Caesar-King (the first six kings being Caligula, Claudius, Nero, Vespasian, Titus and Domitian of the First century) will be slain. All the world will mourn! His death with a sword will be regarded as the greatest blow to “world peace” ever perpetrated; for it was this Man—this pope—who ended the conflict in Israel!

The slain Roman pope will lay in state for a few days, probably three days, ensuring the world will be informed of his death during the funeral at Vatican City. The heads of state will will all be in attendance. The Black Pope will be overseeing the drama, for he knows this pope is different. This pope, like the mythological Egyptian Horus, must live again! This pope, like the dying phoenix, must rise from his ashes, “reborn” to new life!

On the last day of the 1260-day false peace enjoyed by Jerusalem, the slain pope rises from the dead by the working of Satan. He will step out of his casket in view of all world leaders present at the funeral. Shock and awe will grip the globe as all nations behold this Man whose “deadly wound was healed” (Revelation 13:4). At this moment, Satan, along with his fallen angels, will have been cast out of heaven and confined to the earth (Revelation 12:9), he then to possess and indwell this Man— “the Beast” (Daniel 7:11; Revelation 13:3-10). Truly, this will be “a Kodak moment!”

The first act of the slain and risen pope—now the Antichrist/Man-Beast—will be to secure the subordination and service of his Ten Roman kings (Revelation 17:16-17). Without them, He will not fulfill his destiny. They are imperative in Satan’s quest of securing international worship of himself through this Man (Revelation 13:8). Seven of these kings will willingly give their allegiance to the Man-Beast; three will be forcefully submitted (Daniel 7:8, 20).

Having consolidated his power, the Ten Kings of the Man-Beast will then destroy Rome with Vatican City by fire (Revelation 17:16). A few well-placed, high-tech weapons will do the job and the world will again witness the unthinkable—the physical destruction of the most important city on earth for the last 2000 years! That incineration will include the coveted and priceless Vatican library along with Rome’s treasures in art and architecture. All the Roman gardens—gone!

The second epic act of this Man will be the killing of the Two Hebrew Prophets in Jerusalem (Revelation 11:3-12). These Two Witnesses—the returned Moses and Elijah having been with Christ at his transfiguration—will have finished their 1260-day ministry calling for Israel’s national repentance, but to no avail! The Antichrist’s murder of Moses and Elijah will render this White-Gentile, Roman Man-Beast invincible to the world. Indeed, the world shall cry:
“Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?”

The third epic event of this Man will be his breaking of the his seven-year, international peace treaty (Daniel 9:27) and his declaration of being “God Almighty” within the rebuilt Temple of Solomon! (II Thessalonians 2:4) This act begins the Great Tribulation as warned by the Lord Jesus Christ (Matthew 24:15). Ah, the dream of Satan’s Knights Templars, revived as the Society of Jesus/Society of Horus, will finally come true! The Man-Beast’s Hebrew False Prophet—on this very same day—erects a talking statue in the Jerusalem Temple, the False Hebrew Propohet demanding international worship of this “image of the beast” (Revelation 13:11-18). This statue is “the abomination of desolation” (Matthew 24:15)—the statue of the Man-Beast desolating the Hebrew Temple of God in Jerusalem (Revelation 11:1-2)!

The fourth bombastic act of the Satan-possessed Antichrist/Man-Beast will be his removal to the new world capital—the rebuilt City of Babylon! (Presently, the pope’s US military commanded by select Knights of Malta are conducting the war of urban renewal in Iraq while the pope’s gigantic construction companies—including CFR-Dick Cheney’s Haliburton now based in Dubai!—are rebuilding Babylon under guard by US forces! Yes, this is the foremost reason for the war in Iraq!) At this time Satan’s risen Horus will be known as “the Assyrian” and the “King of Babylon!” (Isaiah 10:5; 14:4) He will rule the world for “forty-two months” (Revelation 13:5; 12:6) during which the Lamb of God will judge the world with His Seal, Trumpet and Bowl judgments (Revelation 6-19).

The end will be the Second Coming of “the Word of God” (Revelation 19:13), He then to establish his world kingdom over all the kingdoms of the earth for one thousand years (Daniel 7:14; Revelation 20:4), and later, to continue forever in the new earth!

In conclusion, the Jesuit Papacy is the necessary tool by which the Risen Son of God will bring his infallible Word to pass. The risen pope turned Antichrist/Man-Beast (the Seventh Roman Caesar-King turned the Eighth King, yet is the same body of the Seventh King) will yet rule the world. When I stated above that the Jesuit Papacy is the necessary tool by which the Risen Son of God will bring his infallible, written Word to pass, this statement was premised upon the doctrine of Almighty God the Father using evil men to bring His counsel to pass for His eternal glorification and praise! Such was the case of Joseph; for he was wickedly sold into slavery by his brothers but what they intended for evil, God worked and weaved for good (Genesis 50:20). Such was the case of Judas; though responsible for his sin of betraying the Son of God (Matthew 26:24), he was chosen by Christ Jesus for that very purpose (John 17:12). Such was the case of those Jews and Roman Gentiles who crucified Christ; though responsible for the murder (Acts 7:52), they voluntarily, without compunction or coercion, crucified the Son of God—His death by crucifixion having been determined by God the Father (Psalm 22:16; Acts 4:27-28) before the foundation of the world (Revelation 13:8). Yes, God determined the slaying of His beloved Son, but not the sin and crime that brought it to pass. These wicked men, whose spiritual father was the devil (I John 3:8-10) fulfilled the counsel of God—of their own choosing, of their own fallen will enslaved to sin.

God is not the author of sin; God forbid that any should charge Him with folly, namely, that he is the First Cause of all things—including sin. (This belief is a heresy of certain Calvinists, they preaching God ordained the Fall of Man, thereby rendering the mercy of God in Christ a mere divine stage play and an unspeakable mockery of fallen men.) But God takes all things that have ever, are now and will ever transpire—including the sinful works of Satan as well as the evil works of men—and weaves them to fulfill the determinate counsel of his will (Ephesians 1:11). By this principle, God is using Satan and his greatest, human Second Cause in the earth at present, to fulfill His counsel in bringing the Antichrist/Man-Beast to world power some day. For every sin each high Jesuit commits he will be held personally accountable; yet God, whose ways are past finding out, will work every sinful act to fulfill His eternal counsel, He making the wrath of man to ultimately praise Him (Psalm 76:10)!

A Challenge For Calvary Chapel Pastors to Take a Stand Against Apostasy

The Bible teaches that a one-world religion will be a characteristic of the Last Days. While Jesus Christ is preparing His bride, Satan, God’s adversary, is preparing the crowning of the harlot.

This counterfeit harlot “bride” is being set up to prepare the way for the counterfeit “Christ.” This anti-Christ church will come in the name of the Church of Jesus Christ. This is the scenario that the Bible defines.

We are seeing this happening right before our eyes, yet so few see it. Is this largely due to Christian leaders who are blinded by their pride (Obadiah 1:3); and, hiding behind their accomplishments, they are driven by this pride, refusing to listen to those who are trying to warn them? Do these shepherds really know they are pulling the wool over the eyes of the very sheep they are supposed to be protecting?

This short commentary is another effort to warn those whom we know and love who are being seduced by Satan’s plan. Satan is a world schemer, and he has done this through the ages. There are many ways and means that Satan uses to seduce those who have believed and those who have never believed.

When Does a Shepherd Warn?

A true shepherd always warns his flock when danger is near. Imagine what happens when the shepherd falls asleep. Like a shepherd, pastors are to warn their sheep. Not only do they feed them, but they never let wolves come into their midst. Wolves can look harmless if they are wearing sheep’s clothing. The Bible warns that this is one of the ways that Satan works. Let us not forget that he comes as an “angel of light,” and his ministers come as “ministers of righteousness” as mentioned in 2 Corinthians 11.

Just like shepherds need to be alert to protect their flocks of sheep, so too pastors need to protect their “flocks” of believers. However, this doesn’t always happen - especially when many pastors look to a single pastor who, in essence, has replaced Jesus Christ. The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ should be our “good shepherd.” When we put a man between Jesus and ourselves we are only asking for trouble.

If there was ever a time for Christian pastors to be discerning about the invasion of false doctrine, it’s now. In previous commentaries, we have been warning about this very problem. Apostasy doesn’t happen overnight. It sneaks up, one compromising step after the next, and it is a symptom that something has gone very wrong. When many pastors are caught up in following one man and the decisions he makes, this can be the recipe for disaster and the beginning of a cult. Humans are humans, and God is God. Once more, check out history, men are fallible and can easily be misled. Pride is a snare that any one of us can fall prey to, and it is a dangerous trap that we should resist and flee from.

Elders are to be part of local church government, keeping pastors true to the Word of God. When elders are forced to be puppets, they are nothing more than objects of manipulation. God’s design for true biblical leadership is abandoned for the “Moses model.” Remember, Moses disobeyed God, and as a result, he never made it into the Promised Land.

How Is Calvary Chapel Being Led Down the Road to Rome?

The evidence is growing that Calvary Chapel discernment is fading away. Some wonder if this has something to do with the lack of discernment in the formative years of Calvary Chapel. If an organization starts out with no discernment and doesn’t correct that, doesn’t it make sense that it will not have discernment in the future? As we pointed out in an earlier commentary bad roots produce unhealthy fruit.

While many sheep are still blindly following what they believe is biblical Christianity, the influence of Rome on Calvary Chapel is becoming clearer every day to those who have “eyes to see.” Those who do see what is happening are disheartened to watch the warning signs appear almost daily, and yet still there is silence from those who could speak up and make a difference. If you count up all the senior Calvary Chapel pastors, all the associate and assistant Calvary Chapel pastors, and all the Calvary Chapel youth pastors throughout the world, you are probably looking at nearly four thousand men. Yet, to our knowledge, not one Calvary Chapel pastor is publicly challenging the organization to whom they have placed their trust, their affiliation, and their commitment. We are not talking about private conversations going on behind the scenes – we are talking about public denouncement of deliberate apostasy. The silence of these nearly four thousand men is deafening, and the results of this silence is that many sheep are confused and being led astray with a false sense of security that everything is ok because their pastors say nothing.

Yesterday, in a discussion with a retired Calvary Chapel pastor, I was told that Understand The Times is confusing the sheep by presenting the evidence that apostasy is happening around them. Does this mean that we should ignore the facts and cover up apostasy by becoming silent as the others are doing?

When God showed Nathan sin, he went to David and told him. I am sure it was not easy for Nathan. Has biblical truth changed? Are we to cover our eyes and walk away and say, “all is well”? If that is the case, then we invite skeptics to show us the chapter and verse.

Commentary by Roger Oakland: Another spirit or the Holy Spirit?

The Bible teaches there is another spirit, another gospel and another Jesus? If God is God, why would such deception exist? The answer is very simple. Satan, the father of lies, is the great deceiver who wants to be God. His plan is to deceive the world in the name of the Savior, Jesus Christ.

Therefore, if the Spirit of God leads the lost to the Son of God, could it be that that “another spirit” is how the devil leads the whole world to the antichrist? These are questions that every Christian should think about, especially in the Last Days when deception is on the increase.

For some time now, I have been thinking about these things. How does Satan deceive, and should a Christian be aware of how Satan works? The Bible is full of references that warn believers to wake up and to expose darkness.

Further, the concept of checking out the roots of a tree has been constantly on my mind. What does it means to check out the roots of a tree with reference to Christianity? Some time ago, a friend of mine gave me an illustration he believed had an important spiritual implication. The illustration was that of a simple drawing of a tree that was filled with ravens sitting on the branches. While some branches represented biblical truths, other branches represented teachings that had infiltrated the body of Christ and were clearly devious plans of Satan.

As for the roots of the tree, some of the roots were embedded in healthy soil and thus provided essential nutrients to the tree, while other roots were embedded in soil that was polluted with poison, and of course, did much harm to the tree. Further, the illustration showed that this tree was a hiding place for the ravens.
I will never forget this illustration as this is what is happening to fellowships and entire denominations within the Christian church today. Bad roots eventually produce bad fruit. While this should be obvious to those who say they believe the Bible, that’s not always the case. The human beings, who make up the tree, cannot see because they are part of the tree, and they have become blinded. It would be easy to recover from this blindness if they would only turn to the Word of God to gain understanding and discernment.

Christianity is full of examples of tree-like denominations full of ravens because Satan is the master deceiver, and he knows that men follow men instead of Jesus. While the Roman Catholic Church claims to be the Mother of All Churches we know this is not true. Jesus said His church would be built upon the true cornerstone. And He is that cornerstone. [4]. When we follow men instead of Jesus Christ, we have the ingredients for a spiritual disaster. Such is the case that we will try to analyze in the rest of this commentary.

A Counterfeit spirit is not the Holy Spirit?

Wouldn’t it make sense that if the Holy Spirit points the lost to the truth, then a counterfeit spirit called “another spirit” points those who are lost toward deception? This is the devil’s plan as recorded in the Bible. In our research, we have discovered this is one of Satan’s favorite strategies. How many have believed they have been led by the Spirit of God when later it becomes obvious that they had been seduced by a spirit of deception? This is why it is so important to have discernment, which only comes from knowing God’s Word and allowing His Spirit to lead us.

For example, I have known people who believed they were being blessed by the Spirit of God because they laughed hysterically, barked like a dog, slithered on the floor like a snake, or even clucked like a chicken. At first, they said they were not sure if it was God that was causing them to behave that way. Their line of thought went like this: if it was God, they did not want to miss out on what God was doing; thus they were willing to take the risk.

As you can see this line of reasoning is not reasonable. What if it was not God that was causing them to behave in these unusual ways? Would that mean they had been deceived by Satan? This is a serious situation
History shows the danger there is in following a man or woman who claims to be a Christian because he or she has an ability of making people “feel” like they are being influenced by the Holy Spirit.

On a number of occasions, I have heard testimonies from people who were first-hand witnesses of the “Jesus Movement.” They give testimony that one of the leaders had the ability to make them feel like the “spirit” was “flowing all over them.” The person who is speaking in the following clip states there would never have been a Calvary Chapel movement or a Vineyard Movement without Lonnie Frisbee who acted very strangely:

Here is another example of a testimony from a person who claims that Lonnie Frisbee had an “anointing” called a mantle. Today, there are those who believe there is about to be another Jesus movement and that this so-called anointing that Frisbee had is about to be released.

Now, here are the facts. Feelings can be very deceptive. Feelings or emotions should never be relied upon for determining truth and the presence of the Holy Spirit. Believing that one can receive a transferable anointing from a man or an object is nothing more than witchcraft. Following a man under the influence of drugs is not following Jesus and His Word.

Many who were under such an influence felt all kinds of things. They even saw things that were in their minds as the result of LSD. How much confidence would you put in a person who said he was a convert of Jesus Christ who was stoned Saturday night and then preached Sunday morning? Is it possible that “another Jesus” was often represented during this former Jesus movement?

Can Bad Roots Produce Bad Fruit?

While God saves sinners from all sin, does this mean that sin can be covered up by ignoring that sin never happened? Further, there is another piece of evidence that needs to be considered. It is possible to start out right and to end up wrong, isn’t it? What if a group becomes so proud of themselves they refuse to be corrected. Remember, pride comes before a fall.

Now that we are living in a time of great deception predicted by the Bible as the Last Days, is it possible that the ravens are coming home to roost in the dead branches of the trees? Could those branches have died because the roots absorbed poison by certain false doctrines that crept in unawares? Would the dead branches be the perfect nesting place for the enemies of God who are out to destroy all those who truly follow Jesus Christ?
Some time ago, after doing some research and gathering of the facts, I became suspicious because of some of the testimonies that I heard about the roots of the Jesus Movement. Here is one example that you can listen to and watch and see for yourself:

Furthermore, let us consider the connection of Kathryn Kuhlman with the Jesus Movement. She was a promoter of the Protestant Charismatic movement and in ecumenical unity with Rome. Does that sound an alarm? How can someone who has partnered with Rome be part of a true Jesus Movement?

Anyone who has done their research knows that the Jesuit plan is to bring the separated brethren back to the Roman Catholic Church. The Roman Catholic Jesus is the Eucharistic Jesus and must be worshiped in a container called a monstrance. (See Another Jesus? While I am not saying that no one was saved during that time, I am saying that godly discernment was not used by the leaders of the Jesus Movement just as godly discernment is not being used by today’s Christian leaders either.

How devious is Satan?

Have you ever considered what spiritual deception is? We should never underestimate Satan’s ability to dupe the world or the church. In fact, the Bible teaches that a counterfeit church will be prepared for a counterfeit “Christ” in the last days. This means that pastors and church leaders who once were strong Bible believers and teachers will be seduced and become pawns of the deceiver. This is what is called the Great Falling Away.

So, the question is this: are we living in the very days that the Bible predicts this will happen? Could it be that another spirit is preparing the way for another Christ, and another gospel is masquerading to prepare the way for the harlot?

This is a time to check your faith and test all that you believe with the Scriptures. Finally, remember the tree with the ravens in the branches. Bad roots can produce branches that are unproductive that may even be the nesting place for false teachers that come home to roost. Check out the roots of the tree that your faith is based upon.

One final thing! Please watch the following video clip of Skip Heitzig’s 2010 production called Riptide. Skip promotes Lonnie Frisbee and Kathyrn Kuhlman as if they were heroes of the faith. It also promotes “another Jesus movement.”

Is it possible that this proposed new Jesus Movement that is being created will partner with the Second Pentecost that is being promoted by the Roman Catholic Charismatic Movement? That would mean that this proposed another Jesus movement would be the equivalent of “Another Jesus” movement also called the Eucharistic Reign of Jesus.

Introduction

For some time, Understand The Times has been warning pastors of churches that were formerly considered to be Protestant and evangelical about the spiritual deception that is currently underway and seducing them into the One World Religion. As time has passed, it seems that these leaders no longer consider themselves Protestant or evangelical. They are ecumenical. Instead of protesting against the rule of Rome, they are now actually partners with Rome and even promoting a globalist Dominionist plan to transform the world in what they believe is a great revival or great awakening. While many innocent sheep follow these pastors and leaders and do not realize what is happening, the Lord is calling watchmen and watchwomen to sound the alarm. The question is, how many are listening?

These watchmen and watchwomen are concerned about apostate leaders who should know better,
but they are saying and doing nothing to warn about the apostasy.
In fact they are promoting apostasy as if it is not happening.
While the sheep may consider their leaders to be supporters of the gospel and therefore evangelical,
it is apparent one cannot be on the road to Rome and also be promoting the gospel of Jesus Christ that

Either you are for Jesus Christ and against apostasy, or you are against Jesus Christ and for apostasy.
Ecumenism and joining hands with the world religions is not of God.

There is one God, Jesus Christ our Creator and our Redeemer.As time passes, there are fewer warning about how close we are
to the demise of biblical Christianity.
Many who once were blowing the trumpet have now either gone to sleep or they have forgotten what
they once believed to be important.

The Counter Reformation started by Rome and the Jesuits continues today unnoticed by the apostate
churches that are uniting with Rome for many different reasons. They have lost their way as they have been
sidetracked by a number of things – love of money, power, and prestige. They have even changed their view
on the Word of God and what it teaches about the return of Christ. Some pastors say that Jesus did not even
warn about apostasy as a sign of His soon return. They claim that a P.E.A.C.E. Plan and a One World Religion
is much more important and we should spend our time and energy working together to solve our social problems.

We have personally been involved in trying to wake up church leaders who are
leading their flocks astray. Either they know they are deceived and are covering
up what they are doing, or they are ignorant of what they are doing and just
deluded. Either way, our experience has not been good. These leaders do not
want the light to shine upon the very darkness they have allowed to creep in.
Instead of checking and correcting the course in which they travel, they spread
lies and rumors about those who are confronting them with the truth.

They do exactly what the religious leaders did in Jeremiah’s day. They ignore the message and proclaim that
the messengers have lost their minds.
While we have been threatened by pastors who have told us to “shut up” and that God “hates us for dividing
the brethren,” let me publically state that dividing the brethren is not our desire or intention. While we realize we
cannot judge the motives since only God sees the heart, it is biblical to be inspectors of fruit. What may look like
good fruit may not always be good fruit. A pastor can appear full of love and beaming with smiles behind the pulpit,
but in his office and behind his desk, he can exhibit a personality like a despot. So which pastor is the real pastor –
Pastor A or Pastor B?

Paul said it very clearly and with words of warning with regard to how some spiritual leaders can appear:
But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them which desire occasion;
that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we. For such are false apostles, deceitful workers,
transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an
angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness;
whose end shall be according to their works.[1]

The Great Delusion and the Lie

The Scriptures reveal that the Last Days will be a time of great deception and even strong delusion.
2 The reason for this is simple. Satan, the god of this world, has a plan to deceive the world and the church in
the name of the Savior. In order for this to happen, the greatest deception in the history of mankind must be
pulled off in the Last Days. Those who once believed the truth will fall away from the truth. Worse than that, the truth
will be replaced by the lie which apparently the whole world will believe. The world and the world’s religions will also
be duped into embracing a One World Government and a One World economy headed up by the antichrist.

The Bible forewarns this will happen, a plan authored by man and inspired by Satan. This best can be described as
the three-legged stool or 6-6-6 Plan that we read about in Revelation chapter fourteen. For those who have followed
the plans of Rick Warren and Tony Blair, it should be obvious this plan is underway. Those who warn others about this
plan are called the “resistors” and are being silenced, removed, or ridiculed for their stance against the
“new thing” that “God” is doing.

As one would expect, this plan would not just happen overnight or in a couple
of weeks. In fact as one looks at an overview of Church history, we can see there
have been numerous attempts by Satan to wipe out those who have
held to biblical faith.
If he can convince people to believe they are followers of the biblical and
historic Jesus when instead they are set up to follow a man who claims
that he is Jesus Christ, the ultimate delusion will have been pulled off.
This is what the Bible says will happen in the Last Days.

The Counter- Reformation

The best way of understanding Satan’s agenda is to analyze this spiritual deception in light of what we call the
Counter Reformation. While we do not intend to lay out all the details here, understand that Satan uses human pawns
to pull off his bidding. History bears this out. If humans are going to be used as pawns in an organized way then
someone or some organization must be involved.

Again, one needs to be a student of church history to see the whole picture. Most church goers today know nothing
about church history. They know nothing about the many who gave their lives because they were dedicated to the
truth – this martyrdom of saints began with the disciples and continued right on past the reformation.

Most today know nothing of the masses that were slaughtered by the Roman Catholic Church during the Counter
Reformation or the Inquisition. They are clueless that the Counter Reformation is still underway today and that the
hope and final goal of the Counter Reformation is to have the world bow to the pope in Rome as the pontiff who
represents Jesus Christ here on earth and establishes the ‘Kingdom of God” here on earth with the “presence”
of Jesus.

The players presently playing this ecumenical role are the Jesuits. Lighthouse Trails and Understand The Times
recently wrote a commentary exposing the Jesuit plan. These clever deceivers have a calculated plan to win back the
separated brethren to the Mother of All Churches in Rome.

When we read the Bible, we know there must be a global religion for peace that embraces all religions in the name
of the Savior. If Bible believing churches are not going to stand up and warn about this deception, they will eventually
become part of the deception. Writing the book Faith Undone was an attempt to warn this generation what is
going on as the emerging church clearly and cleverly devised a plan to bring this ecumenical unity about.

The Effects of the Emerging Church

Faith Undone explained how the road to Rome is being established through the
introduction of mysticism, contemplative practices, and outright Peter Drucker
and Rick Warrenism; but writing and publishing this book has not
been without a high cost - since the book was released, an all out assault from Satan
has mounted to stop its warning.

Faith is truly being undone, and the Word of God is under attack; those who love the
Word of God can see it even though they are only a remnant.

Jesus asked the question that is recorded in Luke 18:8: “When the Son of Man
returns will He find faith?” If this is the indicator of how bad the deception will be, what should those who
still have biblical faith be doing?

It should be no surprise then if we are living in the last days that there would be signs indicating the final falling away
is underway. We believe this is the case.

Pastors and leaders who were once looked up to as great men of God are showing signs that they are willingly
following various avenues to Rome. Whether they know they are being deceived or not may be difficult to prove
because they often keep silent. However their silence is deafening. It is hard to understand how a born again
Christian can show any support whatsoever toward the ecumenical apostasy. If you are not publically against
ecumenical apostasy, could your silence possibly be an indicator that you are likely for it?

Many pastors and Christian figures are forming alliances they would never have before. At one time, these pastors
warned the sheep to look out for dominionist political/religious agendas and to remain steadfast boldly proclaiming
the gospel according to the Scriptures. Now, the picture is much different - these pastors who say nothing about
ecumenism allow themselves to be infiltrated by spokespersons whom they never would have allowed in their pulpits
before. Some of these bad alliances are made with men who are knowingly aligned with Rome and the Roman
Catholic Dominionist agenda to take over America and the world for “Jesus.”

While this happens, many of the sheep don’t see. The wool is being pulled over their eyes.
The shepherds have become wolves in sheep’s clothing. Another gospel and another Jesus is being prepared
because there is another spirit at work. This counterfeit plan looks so good to those who do not have discernment
that they cannot and will not say anything about it.

Worse yet, there are leaders of churches who claim “God is with them” while all the time
they are fleecing the flock.Sheep, because they look to men and not to
Jesus, believe whatever their pastors tell them (or does not tell them).
Satan’s strategy is to get men to follow men and their methods and movements rather than Jesus
and His Word.

It’s the perfect setup for the final delusion when the world follows a man
who is embodied by Satan.

Judgement Will Begin in the House of the Lord

Perhaps you are one of those who is aware of the trends that clearly show biblical Christianity is under attack. Maybe
you have even tried to warn your pastor or the Board of your church, and they were not interested in hearing what you
had to say. Over the past few years we have heard countless stories from people spread throughout the vast
spectrum of church denominations who all have similar stories. Many have been asked to leave their churches
because they would not participate in ecumenism or the contemplative eastern mystical practices that lead to the
ecumenical delusion.

While there are few signs at present that indicate help is on the way, the one thing we know is that Jesus said the
Church of Jesus Christ will not be defeated. Jesus said “Upon this rock I will build my church.” The rock was not and
is not Peter whom the Roman Catholics say was the first pope. The rock is the true foundation of the Church that is
faith in Jesus Christ alone.

While I do not claim to know the future when it comes to all that will happen in the present church, I believe it is safe
to predict something that few are predicting: the death of the churches that operate like corporations is just on the
horizon. While this may sound foolish to those who have built up their invincible empires which include properties all
over the world, radio stations and radio networks, many are detecting that something is terribly wrong. These
churches have become nothing more than big businesses driven by greed. The pastors are the CEOs. Their boards
are made up of puppets or “yes” men who have little or no power.

Many of these large institutions have been allowing sin in the camp for a long time. You’ve probably read about some
of this on the Internet. What kinds of sins? Sexual misconduct brushed under the carpet and not dealt with;
mishandling of donor funds; mishandling of and even illegal financial ventures overlooked and sometimes even
encouraged; spiritual abuse against church members by pastors and elders who have become arrogant and proud,
and so on. But I believe God is going to judge the house of the Lord before He judges the world. Scripture tells us
that the things done in secret will be exposed and brought to the light. Just like it says in the Bible, your sins will find
you out. When this happens and the lines are drawn between the dots, many sheep will be so devastated they will
not be able to cope. How tragic. The men they trusted in have let them down.

Come Out of Her

This is a time in history that every professing Christian leader and pastor should take very soberly. It is a time for true
humility and true repentance. If there is not humility and repentance, Christian pastors and leaders need to know –
your sin will indeed find you out. Better to willingly humble yourself and repent than to wait for God to bring His hand
of judgment upon you. If you are leader who is part of the apostasy come out from among her; if you are a leader
who is sitting on the sidelines in utter silence while spiritual havoc is taking place, humble yourself and repent and
you too, come out from among her. The days are short – there is no time for any believer to compromise.

The Word of God not only helps us to understand our times and the agenda to lead the poor sheep on a path
towards spiritual suicide, the Scriptures also give us a clear solution. The harlot is the counterfeit bride that is
prepared for the antichrist. Surely we can see this happening. The true Church will not disappear but remain
triumphant even though faith in Jesus Christ will be a rare commodity.

Come out of her, means just that. If you are caught in the web of deception that has been woven by the many
tentacles of the strong delusion, now is the time to be bold and take a stand. In the circles that I have been part of
for the last three decades, few pastors that I know are willing to separate from the comfort of their position or the
security of their job.

We are in the final stages of the delusion, and God is warning loud and clear. The Word of God has never changed.
Either you are for Jesus Christ, or you are against Him. There is still time to repent and do what is right. Will you be
counted in that number? [2]

Strange Fire: The Rise of Gnosticism In The Church

FOREWORD
The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us. (Ecclesiastes 1:9-10)
Some books are written before their time. This is one such book. It was never our privilege to know Travers van der Merwe but we had heard of his exemplary walk before God and man while on Earth. While battling cancer, a painful ordeal that lasted for many years, Travers and his wife Jewel penned this book. He saw an ancient heresy arising in the modern Christian church and it weighed heavily on his heart.

After the book was completed, it lay dormant for several years. In the meantime much was happening in the Christian church nationally and internationally to confirm that there was a revival going on - not accompanied by repentance and a turning away from dead works - but of Gnosticism.

Gnosticism has a chameleon-like ability to appear like the genuine article, true Christianity, and thus has managed to transform itself to fit the times in countless new wrappings over the centuries. It particularly adapts itself to that place where the ideas of the east and west meet. Whenever eastern mysticism and western rationalism collide, one can find there the seedbed for a pseudo-Gospel that mimics the real thing.

Gnosticism is fool's gold, shiny and beckoning on the surface, yet phoney. Modern Saints are poorly equipped to recognise the counterfeit. Much Gnosticism enters the Church via the popular Christian media, where the real and the false get mixed up in a garbled soup of doctrines and teachings. The rise of the New Age movement, and the extent to which it has permeated Christian thinking, further clouds the issue. How is a Christian to sort out these strange teachings?

When Jewel first sent us the unpublished manuscript for the book it was because we had been asking her for more information about the rise of modern Gnosticism. The book, she said, would answer many of our questions. Indeed, it did. So many, in fact, that we then began pressing her to let us publish the book. We believed that it should be widely disseminated and read by Christians who were seeking to understand their growing uneasiness with the "new" moves of God, signs and wonders, "laughing revivals", and ecumenical unity.

Strange Fire is a brief, easy-to-understand book that explains how to tell the Truth from the Lie. It doesn't dwell on the spectacular manifestations, but concisely illustrates modern Gnosticism. The real gold of the Gospel is presented in such a way that it outshines the fool's gold of Gnosticism. Readers will have no doubt as to which is which. This handy tool enables even the unlearned to discern Gnosticism the next time they encounter it.

This is one little book that may save a soul from walking into the error and falsehood so prevalent in our time.

In years past, Pope Paul VI once read a papal encyclical that boldly called on the nations of the world to ban sovereignty and form a world government.
As reported by William T. James in a book he wrote called Foreshocks of the Anti-Christ, published in 1997, he noted that Paul VI held a staff with a bent cross, a symbol of Lucifer with an emaciated Jesus arms stretched out in a Masonic triangle with pine cones at his feet.

Coincidentally, Pope John Paul II throughout his tenure carried the same staff.
And just like Paul VI, John Paul II called for a “New World Order”, dedicating an entire Jan. 1 2004 speech to this concept while extolling the virtues of unity and sanctioning the work of the United Nations.

In another book entitled Broken Cross: Hidden Hand in the Vatican, the mention of the staff with the bent cross in the hands of John Paul II come up again, the writer quoting a Masonic encyclopedia regarding its hidden meaning:

“A broken or bent cross is a symbol used by satanists, black magicians and sorcerers of the middle ages making use of it to represent the Biblical term the ‘Mark of the Beast,’” said the author, reminding us that it is just another blatant symbol of the Anti-Christ.
With the Pope now declared as the moral religious by all government leaders as well as the likes of 33 degree Freemason, Billy Graham, the tool used by all those in the New World Order camp to bring about their synthesis of change will be the United Nations.
And it is clear when one studies the intent of the UN, its purpose is both political and spiritual.

Let’s look to organizations created by the UN as well as quotes from the several top UN officials, past and present.

In 1994, in a World Goodwill Newsletter that publication reported the creation of a UN Interfaith Organization called the Temple of Understanding, the goal being to create a “spiritual UN.”

As to touch more on the issue of God's omnipresence; Allan Turner, at Allanturner.com, says:

The God who is eternal, and therefore not limited by time, is omnipresent, and not limited by space (Psalm 139:7-10; Proverbs 15:3; Jeremiah 23:23,24). He is universally present to all of space at all times. Even so, this does not mean that He is dispersed throughout the infinite reaches of space, so that every part of space has at least a little part of God. In other words, God is not present in all space; He is, instead, present to all of space. This means that the unlimited God in His whole being is present at every point of our space. Perhaps a better way to express God's omnipresence is to say that all space is immediately present before Him.

God's omnipresence does not prevent Him from manifesting Himself in a localized place. In fact, although His self-existent, eternal, and infinite Being is present to all of space equally, He has, on occasion, entered space at specific points and become present in it for a specific purpose. These “theophanies,” as they are called, most often involved redemption. For example, the pillar of cloud bearing the glory of God that appeared before the Israelites (Exodus 33:9; 40:34; I Kings 8:10ff) is but one example of such a case. Of course, the most dramatic incident of God entering time and space was the incarnation itself (John 1:14; I Timothy 3:16). Consequently, Jesus was called Immanuel, or “God with us” (Matthew 1:23). But, in entering time and space, God, in His self-existent, eternal, and infinite Being, did not cease to be omnipresent. He was, in fact, still present to every point of space, holding everything together by the word of His power (Colossians 1:17; Hebrews 1:3). In fact, it is evidently the omnipresence of “God with us” that is the subject of John 3:13, which says, “No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of God who is in heaven.” If omnipresence is not under discussion, then pray tell me what is? Remember, these words were being spoken by God Himself while manifested here on this earth in the person of Jesus Christ. Another example of God interjecting Himself into time and space would be the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4), as well as His indwelling of the body of every Christian (I Corinthians 6:19). “Mind-boggling,” you say? Yes, but such is the nature of the great I AM.

The Creator of the Khazarian Jew

Joseph Renan

The idea of the Khazarian Jew first came from a French-born Philosopher named Joseph Ernest Renan. Joseph Renan was a man who lived during the 1800s, and was brought up with a Roman Catholic background. Ernest Brenan, most of his young Catholic adult life, pursued an education in the Catholic schools he entered. His goal first was to become a Catholic priest, but he later decided that he did not wish to become a priest anymore.

Joseph, throughout his life, adopted strange views on racial and theological matters -- views which aren't too uncommon to this day and age. Joseph was a skeptic to much pre-established thought and belief. Joseph believed that through his study of Hebrew that the books of Isaiah and the Pentateuch were written by more than one author, and that the book of Daniel was clearly false.

Josephs racial views were, although fairly common in Europe during his time, deluded and slightly disturbing. Joseph had an assorted beliefs on racial peoples ranging from the Chinese, Europeans, Blacks, to Jews. Joseph believed that Europeans were the, superior, race of masters and soldiers; Chinese, superior in their manual dexterity but having no sense of honor; Blacks, the race of tillers of the soil, to be treated with kindness and humanity for all to be well; Jews, 'an incomplete race,' limited by dogmatism and unable to integrate within a cosmopolitan civilization. According to Joseph, the Chinese and Blacks are 'not military creatures in the least.'

One of Joseph's most famous works was his book entitled The Life of Jesus, where he attempts to establish the historicity of the existence of Jesus, but actively denies the claim that Jesus is the Son of God and the miracles which the Bible recorded of Him being of supernatural origin.

Renan's beliefs on Jesus were as follows

Jesus never did any miracles

Jesus was not born of a virgin

Jesus was a maniacal conman, disillusioned with fame and want for recognition

But he had a great moral message!

Alleged Khazar ancestry of Ashkenazim

The theory that all or most Ashkenazi ("European") Jews might be descended from Khazars (rather than Semitic groups in the Middle East) dates back to the racialism of late nineteenth century Europe, and was frequently cited to assert that most modern Jews aren't descended from Israelites and/or to refute Israeli claims to territory also sought by Palestinians. It was first publicly proposed in lecture given by Ernest Renan on January 27, 1883, titled "Judaism as a Race and as Religion." It was repeated in articles in The Dearborn Independent in 1923 and 1925, and popularized by racial theorist Lothrop Stoddard in a 1926 article in the Forum titled "The Pedigree of Judah", where he argued that Ashkenazi Jews were a mix of people, of which the Khazars were a primary element. Stoddard's views were "based on nineteenth and twentieth-century concepts of race, in which small variations on facial features as well as presumed accompanying character traits were deemed to pass from generation to generation, subject only to the corrupting effects of marriage with members of other groups, the result of which would lower the superior stock without raising the inferior partners." This theory was adopted by British Israelites, who saw it as a means of invalidating the claims of Jews (rather than themselves) to be the true descendants of the ancient Israelites, and was supported by early anti-Zionists.

In 1951 Southern Methodist University professor John O. Beaty published The Iron Curtain over America, a work which claimed that "Khazar Jews" were "responsible for all of America's — and the world's — ills beginning with World War I". The book repeated a number of familiar antisemitic claims, placing responsibility for U.S. involvement in World Wars I and II and the Bolshevik revolution on these Khazars, and insisting that Khazar Jews were attempting to subvert Western Christianity and establish communism throughout the world. The American millionaire J. Russell Maguire gave money towards its promotion, and it was met with enthusiasm by hate groups and the extreme right. By the 1960s the Khazar theory had become a "firm article of faith" amongst Christian Identity groups. In 1971 John Bagot Glubb (Glubb Pasha) also took up this theme, insisting that Palestinians were more closely related to the ancient Judeans than were Jews. According to Benny Morris:

"Of course an anti-Zionist (as well as an anti-Semitic) point is being made here: The Palestinians have a greater political right to Palestine than the Jews do, as they, not the modern-day Jews, are the true descendants of the land's Jewish inhabitants/owners."

The theory gained further support when the novelist Arthur Koestler devoted his popular book The Thirteenth Tribe (1976) to the topic. Koestler's historiography has been attacked as highly questionable by many historians; it has also been pointed out that his discussion of theories about Ashkenazi descent is largely unsupported; to the extent that Koestler referred to place-names and documentary evidence his analysis has been described as a mixture of flawed etymologies and misinterpreted primary sources. Commentors have also noted that Koestler mischaracterized the sources he cited, particularly D.M. Dunlop's History of the Jewish Khazars (1954).

Koestler himself was pro-Zionist based on secular considerations, and did not see alleged Khazar ancestry as diminishing the claim of Jews to Israel, which he felt was based on the United Nations mandate, and not on Biblical covenants or genetic inheritance. In his view, "The problem of the Khazar infusion a thousand years ago ... is irrelevant to modern Israel". In addition, he was apparently "either unaware of or oblivious to the use anti-Semites had made to the Khazar theory since its introduction at the turn of the century."

Nevertheless, in the Arab world the Khazar theory still enjoys popularity among some anti-Zionists and antisemites;) Such proponents argue that if Ashkenazi Jews are primarily Khazar and not Semitic in origin, they would have no historical claim to Israel, nor would they be the subject of God's Biblical promise of Canaan to the Israelites, thus undermining the theological basis of both Jewish religious Zionists and Christian Zionists. In the 1970s and 80s the Khazar theory was also advanced by some Russian chauvinist antisemites, particularly the historian Lev Gumilyov, who portrayed "Judeo-Khazars" as having repeatedly sabotaged Russia's development since the 7th century. According to Bernard Lewis:

"This theory… is supported by no evidence whatsoever. It has long since been abandoned by all serious scholars in the field, including those in Arab countries, where the Khazar theory is little used except in occasional political polemics."

I wish to put in the RECORD the secret treaty of Verona of November 22, 1822, showing what this ancient conflict is between the rule of the few and the rule of the many. I wish to call the attention of the Senate to this treaty because it is the threat of this treaty which was the basis of the Monroe doctrine. It throws a powerful white light upon the conflict between monarchial government and government by the people. The Holy Alliance under the influence of Metternich, the Premier of Austria, in 1822, issued this remarkable secret document :

SECRET TREATY OF VERONA

The undersigned, specially authorized to make some additions to the treaty of the Holy Alliance, after having exchanged their respective credentials, have agreed as follows :

ARTICLE 1. The high contracting powers being convinced that the system of representative government is equally as incompatible with the monarchial principles as the maxim of the sovereignty of the people with the high divine right, engage mutually in the most solemn manner, to use all their efforts to put an end to the system of representative governments, in whatever country it may exist in Europe, and to prevent its being introduced in those countries where it is not yet known.

ART. 2. As it can not be doubted that the liberty of the press is the most powerful means used by the pretended supporters of the rights of nations to the detriment of those princes, the high contracting parties promise reciprocally to adopt all proper measures to suppress it, not only in their own states but also in the rest of Europe.

ART. 3. Convinced that the principles of religion contribute most powerfully to keep nations in the state of passive obedience which they owe to their princes, the high contracting parties declare it to be their intention to sustain in their respective States those measures which the clergy may adopt, with the aim of ameliorating their own interests, so intimately connected with the preservation of the authority of the princes ; and the contracting powers join in offering their thanks to the Pope for what he has already done for them, and solicit his constant cooperation in their views of submitting the nations.

ART. 4. The situation of Spain and Portugal unite unhappily all the circumstances to which this treaty has particular reference. The high contracting parties, in confiding to France the care of putting an end to them, engaged to assist her in the manner which may the least compromit them with their own people and the people of France by means of a subsidy on the part of the two empires of 20,000,000 of francs every year from the date of the signature of this treaty to the end of the war.

ART. 5. In order to establish in the Peninsula the order of things which existed before the revolution of Cadiz, and to insure the entire execution of the articles of the present treaty, the high contracting parties give to each other the reciprocal assurance that as long as their views are not fulfilled, rejecting all other ideas of utility or other measure to be taken, they will address themselves with the shortest possible delay to all the authorities existing in their States and to all their agents in foreign countries, with the view to establish connections tending toward the accomplishment of the objects proposed by this treaty.

ART. 6. This treaty shall be renewed with such changes as new circumstances may give occasion for, either at a new congress or at the court of one of the contracting parties, as soon as the war with Spain shall be terminated.

ART. 7. The present treaty shall be ratified and the ratifications exchanged at Paris within the space of six months.

I ask to have printed in the CONGRESSIONAL RECORD this secret treaty, because I think it ought to be called now to the attention of the people of the United States and of the world. This evidence of the conflict between the rule of the few verses popular government should be emphasized on the minds of the people of the United States, that the conflict now waging throughout the world may be more clearly understood, for after all said the great pending war springs from the weakness and frailty of government by the few, where human error is far more probable than the error of the many where aggressive war is only permitted upon the authorizing vote of those whose lives are jeopardized in the trenches of modern war.

Mr. SHAFROTH. Mr. President, I should like to have the senator state whether in that treaty there was not a coalition formed between the powerful countries of Europe to reestablish the sovereignty of Spain in the Republics of South and Central America?

Mr. OWEN. I was just going to comment upon that, and I am going to take but a few moments to do so because I realize the pressure of other matters. This Holy Alliance, having put a Bourbon prince upon the throne of France by force, then used France to suppress the constitution of Spain immediately afterwards, and by this very treaty gave her a subsidy of 20,000,000 francs annually to enable her to wage war upon the people of Spain and to prevent their exercise of any measure of the right of self-government. The Holy Alliance immediately did the same thing in Italy, by sending Austrian troops to Italy, where the people there attempted to exercise a like measure of liberal constitutional self-government ; and it was not until the printing press, which the Holy Alliance so stoutly opposed, taught the people of Europe the value of liberty that finally one country after another seized a greater and greater right of self government, until now it may be fairly said that nearly all the nations of Europe have a very large measure of self government. However, I wish to call the attention of the Senate and the country to this important history in the growth of constitutional popular self-government. The Holy Alliance made its powers felt by the wholesale drastic suppression of the press in Europe, by universal censorship, by killing free speech and all ideas of popular rights, and by the complete suppression of popular government. The Holy Alliance having destroyed popular government in Spain and in Italy, had well-laid plans also to destroy popular government in the American colonies which had revolted from Spain and Portugal in Central and South America under the influence of the successful example of the United States. It was because of this conspiracy against the American Republics by the European monarchies that the great English statesman, Canning, called the attention of our government to it, and our statesmen then, including Thomas Jefferson, took an active part to bring about the declaration by President Monroe in his next annual message to the Congress of the United States that the United States should regard it as an act of hostility to the government of the United States and an unfriendly act if this coalition or if any power of Europe ever undertook to establish upon the American Continent any control of any American Republic or to acquire any territorial rights. This is the so-called Monroe doctrine. The threat under the secret treaty of Verona to suppress popular governments in the American Republics is the basis of the Monroe doctrine. This secret treaty sets forth clearly the conflict between monarchial government and popular government and the government of the few as against the government of the many. It is a part, in reality, of developing popular sovereignty when we demand for women equal rights to life, to liberty, to the possession of property, to an equal voice in the making of the laws and the administration of the laws. This demand on the part of the women is made by men, and it ought to be made by men as well as by thinking, progressive women, as it will promote human liberty and human happiness. I sympathize with it, and I hope that all parties will in the national conventions give their approval to this larger measure of liberty to the better half of the human race.

No. 66.] Rome, November, 1863

Sir: As I expected at the date of my no. 65, I reached here on the 9th instant, late in the afternoon.

On the 11th, at half past 1 p.m., I sought and promptly obtained an interview with his Eminence, the Cardinal Secretary of State, Antonelli. I at once explained to him the object of my mission to Rome and he instantly assured me that he would obtain for me an audience of the sovereign Pontiff.

His Eminence then remarked that he would not withhold from me an expression of his unbounded admiration of the wonderful powers which we had exhibited in the field in resistance to a war which had been prosecuted with an energy, aided by the employment of all the recent improvements in the instruments for the destruction of life and property, unparalleled, perhaps, in the worlds history. He asked me several questions with respect to President Davis, at the end of which he observed that he certainly had created for himself a name that would rank with those of the most illustrious statesmen of modern times. He manifested an earnest desire for the definitive termination of hostilities, and observed that there was nothing the government of the Holy See could do with propriety to occasion such a result that it was not prepared to do. I seized the utterance of this assurance to inform him that but for the European recruits received by the North, numbering annually something like 100,000, the Lincoln Administration; in all likelihood, would have been compelled some time before this to have retired from the contest, that nearly all those recruits were from Ireland, and that Christianity had cause to weep at such a fiendish destruction of life as occurred from the beguiling of those people from their homes to take up arms against citizens who had never harmed or wronged them in the slightest degree. He appeared to be touched by my statement, and intimated that an evil so disgraceful to humanity was not beyond the reach of a salutary remedy.

His Eminence, after a short pause, took a rapid survey of the affairs of the nations of the earth, and drew a rather somber picture of the future, particularly of Europe. He did not attempt to conceal his dislike of England, his want of sympathy with Russia, his distrust of any benefits which might be expected from the congress proposed by France. "If old guaranties," said he, emphatically, "are of no value, new ones will be to feeble to resist expediency when sustained by might."

This is but a short and otherwise imperfect outline of one of the most interesting official interviews I ever enjoyed, an interview which was of lengthened duration and marked from beginning to end with extreme cordiality and courtesy by the distinguished functionary by whom it was accorded. I will add, lest I may not have been sufficiently explicit on that point, that it took place in his office in the Vatican, where he receives all the foreign ministers.

No. 67.] Rome, November 14, 1863

Sir: At 3 o'clock on the afternoon of yesterday I received a formal notification that his Holiness would favor me with an audience, embracing my private secretary, Mr. W. Grayson Mann, to-day at 12 o'clock.

I accordingly proceeded to the Vatican sufficiently early to enable me to reach there fifteen minutes in advance of the designated hour. In five minutes afterwards-ten minutes prior to the appointed time-a message came from the sovereign Pontiff that he was ready to receive me, and I was accordingly conducted into his presence.

His Holiness stated, after I had taken my stand near to his side, that he had been so afflicted by the horrors of the war in America that many months ago he had written to the Archbishops of New Orleans and New York to use all the influence that they could properly employ for terminating with as little delay as possible the deplorable state of hostilities; that from the former he had received no answer, but that he had heard from the latter and that his communication was not such as to inspire hopes that his ardent wishes would be speedily gratified.

I then remarked that "it is to a sense of profound gratitude of the Executive of the Confederate States and of my countrymen, for the earnest manifestations which your Holiness made in the appeal referred to, that I am indebted for the distinguished honor for which I now enjoy. President Davis has appointed me special envoy to convey in person to your holiness this letter, which, I trust, you will receive in a similar spirit to that which animated its author."

Looking for a moment at the address and afterwards at the seal of the letter, his Holiness took his scissors and cut the envelope. Upon opening it he observed: "I see it is in English, a language which I do not understand." I remarked: "If it will be agreeable to your holiness, my Secretary will translate its contents to you." He replied: "I shall be pleased if he will do so." The translation was rendered in a slow, solemn, and emphatic pronunciation. During its progress, I did not cease for an instant to carefully survey the features of the sovereign Pontiff. A sweeter expression of pious affection, of tender benignity, never adorned the face of mortal man. No picture can adequately represent him when exclusively absorbed in Christian contemplation. Every sentence of the letter seemed to sensibly affect him. At the conclusion of each, he would lay his hand down upon the desk and bow his head approvingly. When the passage was reached wherein the President states, in such sublime and affecting language, "We have offered up at the footstool of our Father who is in Heaven prayers inspired by the same feelings which animate your Holiness," his deep sunken orbs visibly moistened were upturned toward that throne upon which ever sits the Prince of Peace, indicating that his heart was pleading for our deliverance from that causeless and merciless war which is prosecuted against us. The soul of infidelity--if, indeed, infidelity have a soul-- would have melted in view of so sacred a spectacle.

The emotion occasioned by the translation was succeeded by a silence of some time. At length his Holiness asked whether President Davis was a Catholic. I answered in the negative. He then asked if I was one. I assured him that I was not.

His Holiness now stated, to use his own language, that "Lincoln & Co." had endeavored to create an impression abroad that they were fighting for the abolition of slavery, and that it might perhaps be judicious in us to consent to gradual emancipation. I replied that the subject of slavery was one over which the Government of the Confederate States, like that of the old United States, had no control whatever; that all ameliorations with regard to the institution must proceed from the States themselves, which were as sovereign in their character in this regard as were France, Austria, or any other continental power; that true philanthropy shuddered at the thought of the liberation of the slave in the manner attempted by "Lincoln & Co."; that such a procedure would be practically to convert the well-cared-for civilized Negro into a semi-barbarian; that such of our slaves as had been captured or decoyed off by our enemy were in an incomparably worse condition than while they were in the service of their masters; that they wished to return to their old homes, the love of which was the strongest of their affections; that if, indeed, African slavery were an evil, there was a power which, in its own good time, would doubtless remove that evil in a more gentle manner than that of causing the earth to be deluged with blood for its sudden overthrow.

His Holiness received these remarks with an approving expression. He then said that I had reason to be proud of the self- sacrificing devotion of my countrymen from the beginning to the cause for which they were contending. "The most ample reason," I replied, "and yet, scarcely so much as of my countrywomen, whose patriotism, whose sorrows and privations, whose transformation in many instances from luxury to penury, were unparalleled and could not be adequately described by any living language. There they had been from the beginning--there they were still more resolute, if possible, than ever, emulating in devotion, earthly though it was in its character, those holy female spirits who were last at the cross.

His Holiness received this statement with evident satisfaction, and then said: "I would like to do anything that can be effectively done, or that even promises good results, to aid in putting an end to this most terrible war, which is harming the good of all the earth, if I knew how to proceed."

I availed myself of this declaration to inform his Holiness that it was not the armies of Northern birth which the South was encountering in hostile array, but that it was the armies of European creation, occasioned by the Irish and Germans, chiefly by the former, who were influenced to emigrate (by circulars from "Lincoln & Co." to their numerous agents abroad) ostensibly for the purpose of securing high wages but in reality to fill up the constantly depleted ranks of our enemy; that those poor unfortunates were tempted by high bounties (amounting to $500, $600, and $700) to enlist and take up arms against us; that once in the service they were invariably placed in the most exposed points of danger in the battle field; that in consequence thereof an instance had occurred in which an almost entire brigade had been left dead or wounded upon the ground; that but for foreign recruits the North would most likely have broken down months ago in the absurd attempt to overpower the South.

His Holiness expressed his utter astonishment, repeatedly throwing up his hands, at the employment of such means against us, and the cruelty attendant upon such unscrupulous operations.

"But, your Holiness," said I, "Lincoln & Co. are even more wicked, if possible, in their ways than in decoying innocent Irishmen from homes to be murdered in cold blood. Their champions, and would your Holiness believe it unless it were authoritatively communicated to you, their pulpit champions have boldly asserted as a sentiment: 'Greek fire for the families and cities of the rebels and hell fire for their chiefs.' "

His Holiness was startled at this information, and immediately observed: "Certainly no Catholic could reiterate so monstrous a sentiment." I replied: "Assuredly not. It finds a place exclusively in the hearts of the fiendish, vagrant, pulpit buffoons whose number is legion and who impiously undertake to teach the doctrines of Christ for ulterior sinister purposes."

His Holiness now observed: "I will write a letter to President Davis, and of such a character that it may be published for general perusal." I express my heartfelt gratification for the assertion of this purpose. He then remarked, half inquiringly: "You will remain here for several months ?" I, of course, could not do otherwise than answer in the affirmative. Turning to my secretary, he asked several kind questions personal to himself and bestowed upon him a handsome compliment. He then extended his hand as a signal for the end of the audience and I retired.

Thus terminated one among the most remarkable conferences that ever a foreign representative had with a potentate of the earth. And such a potentate! A potentate who wields the consciences of 175,000,000 of the civilized race, and who is adored by that immense number as the vice regent of Almighty God in this sublunary sphere.

How strikingly majestic the conduct of the government of the Pontifical State in its bearing toward me when contrasted with the sneaking subterfuges to which some of the governments of western Europe have had recourse in order to evade intercourse with our commissioners. Here I was openly received by appointment at court in accordance with established usages and customs and treated from beginning to end with a consideration which might be envied by the envoy of the oldest member of the family of nations. The audience was of forty minutes duration, an unusually long one.

I have written this dispatch very hurriedly and fear that it will barely be in time for the monthly steamer which goes off from Liverpool with the mails from the Bahama Islands next Saturday.

No. 68.] Rome, November 21, 1863

Sir: I confidently trust that my Nos. 66 and 67, giving detailed accounts of my audience with the sovereign pontiff and of my interview with the cardinal secretary of state, will have been in your possession some days previous to the arrival of this. Lest, however, they may have been delayed on their way to their destination, I will state that my reception at the Vatican was cordial in the broadest sence of the word, and that my mission has been as successful as the President could have possibly desired it to be.

On the 19th I had a second interview with Cardinal Antonelli. I intended it to be of short duration, but he became so much interested in the communications which I made to him that he prolonged it for nearly an hour. He took the occasion to inform me, at the commencement that the acting representative of the United States had obtained an interview of him the day before to remonstrate against the facilities afforded by the government of the holy see to "Rebels" for entering and abiding in Rome; and that he, the cardinal, promptly replied that he intended to take such "Rebels" under his special protection, because it would be making exactions upon elevated humanity which it was incapable of conscientiously complying with, to expect them to take an oath of allegiance to a country which they bitterly detested. I may add, in this connection, that such passports as you may issue will receive the visa of the nuncio at Paris or Brussels, and that there is now nowhere that the nationality of a citizen of the Confederate States is not as much respected as that of the United States except in the dark hole of the North of Europe.

We have been virtually, if not practically, recognized here. While I was in the foreign office the day before yesterday, foreign ministers were kept waiting for a considerable length of time in the antechamber in order that my interview might not be disturbed. Frequently the cardinal would take my hand between his and exclaim: "Mon cher your government has accomplished prodigies, alike in the cabinet and in the field."

Antonelli is emphatically the State. He is perhaps the very best informed statesman of his time. His channels for obtaining intelligence from every quarter of the earth are more multifarious and reliable than even those of the French. His worst enemies accord to him abilities of the very highest order. They say that he is utterly unscrupulous as to the means which he employs, but that no other man could have saved the temporal power of the Pope. He is bold, courageous, resolute, and is a great admirer of President Davis, because he is distinguished by those qualities, qualities which, if supported by good judgment, will, in his opinion, ever win the object to which they are devoted.

Of course I can form no conjecture when the letter of his holiness to the President will be ready for delivery. Weeks, perhaps months, may elapses first. With my explanations to him upon the subject of slavery, I indulge the hope that he will not allude, hurtfully to us, to the subject. As soon as I receive it I will endeavor to prevail with him to have the correspondence published in the official Journal here, or to give me permission to bring it out in the Paris Moniteur. Its information would be powerful upon all the Catholic governments in both hemispheres, and I would return to Brussels and make an appeal to King Leopold to exert himself with Great Britain, Prussia, etc., in our behalf. Thus I am exceedingly hopeful that before spring our independence will be generally acknowledged. Russia alone will most probably stand aloof until we are recognized by the North, as she has now, at least ostensibly, identify her fortunes with that distracted and demon-like division of the old Union.

So far my mission has not found its way into the newspapers. I wish to keep it secret in order that the publication of the letters may, from the unexpectedness, cause a salutary sensation everywhere when it occurs.

I have reason to believe that what I have said in high places in relation to Irish emigration to New York were words in season.

Sir: The cardinal secretary of state, Antonelli, officially transmitted to me yesterday the answer of the Pope to the President. In the very direction of this communication there is a positive recognition of our government.

It is addressed "to the Illustrious and Honorable Jefferson Davis, President of there Confederate States of America."

Thus we are acknowledged, by as high an authority as this world contains, to be an independent power of the earth.

I congratulate you, I congratulate the President, I congratulate his cabinet; in short, I congratulate all my true-hearted countrymen and countrywomen, upon this benign event. The hand of the Lord has been in it, and eternal glory and praise be to His holy and righteous name.

The document is in the latin language, as are all documents prepared by the Pope. I can not incur the risk of its capture at sea, and, therefore, I shall retain it until I can convey it , with entire certainty, to the President. It will adorn the archives of our country in all coming time.

I expect to receive a copy of it in time for transmission by the steamer which carries this (via New York) at Nassau.

I shall leave here by the 15th instant, and will proceed to Paris and from thence to Brussels and London.

The example of the sovereign pontiff, if I am not much mistaken, will exercise a salutary influence upon both the Catholic and Protestant governments of western Europe. Humanity will be aroused everywhere to the importance of its early emulation.

I have studiously endeavored to prevent the appearance of any telegraphic or other communications in the newspapers in relation to my mission. The nature of it, however, is generally known in official circles here, and it has been mentioned in one or more journals. The letters, in my opinion, ought to be officially published at Richmond, under a call for the correspondence by the one or the other branch of Congress. In the mean time I shall communicate to the European press, probably through the London Times, the substance of those letters.

I regard such a procedure as of primary importance in view of the interests of peace, and I am quite sure that the holy father would rejoice at seeing those interests benefited in this or any other effective manner.

Sir: Herewith I have the honor to transmit the copy sent to me yesterday of the original, in Latin, of the letter of the sovereign pontiff to President Davis. I have taken a duplicate of it. A period of more than a week elapsed between the date of the letter and the delivery of the copy.

I shall repair to Paris immediately where, after conferring with Mr. Slidell and Mr. Mason (from each of whom I have just received the kindest of letters), I shall proceed to Brussels. After a stay there of a day or two, I shall go to London. The Christmas season will be a propitious period for exciting the sympathies of the British public in behalf of the sublime initiative of the Pope. The people of England are never better in heart than during the joyous anniversary of the birth of Him whose cause was "Peace on earth, good will toward men."

Strange to say, a recent number of the Court Journal of London contains one of the most beautiful encomiums ever written upon the eminent purity of character of his Holiness.

We have lately received with all kindness, as was meet, the gentlemen sent by your Excellency to present to us your letter dated on the 23d of last September. We have received certainly no small pleasure in learning both from these gentlemen and from your letter the feelings of gratification and of very warm appreciation with which you, illustrious and honorable sir, were moved when you first had knowledge written in October of the preceding year to the venerable brethren, John, archbishop of New York, and John, archbishop of New Orleans, in which we again and again urged and exhorted those venerable brethren that because of their exemplary piety and Episcopal zeal they should employ their most earnest efforts, in our name also, in order that the fatal civil war which had arisen in the States should end, and that the people of America might again enjoy mutual peace and concord, and love each other with mutual charity. And it has been very gratifying to us to recognize, illustrious and honorable sir, that you and your people are animated by the same desire for peace and tranquility, which we had so earnestly inculcated in our aforesaid letters to the venerable brethren above named. Oh, that the other people also of the States and their rulers, considering seriously how cruel and how deplorable is this intercine war, would receive and embrace the councils of peace and tranquility. We indeed shall not cease with most fervent prayer to beseech God, the best and highest, and to implore Him to pour out the spirit of Christian love and peace upon all the people of America, and to rescue them from the great calamities with which they are afflicted. And we also pray the same most merciful Lord that he will illumine your Excellency with the light of His divine grace and unite you with ourselves in perfect charity.
