Happy with your systems integrator, but need to virtualize MEDITECH? We can help.

Many hospitals and organizations have their IT systems integrator of choice that they've been working with and are completely happy with their service. A common situation that exists is the great majority of these integrators do not work with MEDITECH, and that often creates a hole in the hospital's infrastructure upgrade plans.

New Age Technologies specializes in MEDITECH migrations and Data Protection services. We don't sell servers or storage hardware, so there is no conflict with the existing systems integrator. We frequently partner with companies that sell the hardware components, and even the delivery services for the non-MEDITECH portion of the project, and we work with their team to enable them to deliver the complete solution.

We focus on successfully moving MEDITECH systems to a virtual platform as well as the design and implementation of the storage and backup solutions for MEDITECH. Our delivery methodology is structured to incorporate a high degree of quality control and communications to the users who are impacted by the migration to minimize their downtime.

If you are a systems integrator or an organization that needs MEDITECH migration services, we can help.

VMware Desktop Certifications and FastTrack classes

The new VMware Desktop certification is intended to identify individuals with the capabilities and experience needed to move software applications from traditional desktops to virtual desktops. So far, one certification, the VMware Associate 4 - Desktop is currently offered and VMware recommends taking the VMware View Install Configure Manage course to prepare, which is certainly a great course for those, who are experienced with vSphere, but not with VMware View. For a more advanced look into VMware View, especially for anyone who may be interested in seeking further VMware Desktop Certifications (the soon to be release VCP - Desktop and VCAP - Desktop), I recommend taking the new VMware Desktop FastTrack class which combines contents from the following three classes into one: - VMware View:Install, Configure, Manage
- Application Virtualization with VMware ThinApp
- VMware View: Design Best Practices

The VMware View Desktop - FastTrack class is a 5 day, 10 hour per day class, which New Age Technologies is currently offering in Indianapolis, Louisville, Cincinnati, and Nashville.

Additionally, VMware now offers FastTrack classes for vSphere. The vSphere Advanced FastTrack class combines two advanced classes, the vSphere Troubleshooting and vSphere Manage for Performance classes. The vSphere Automation class combines PowerCLI class with vSphere Install Configure Manage class. These are the best classes to take to prepare for the new VCAP-DCA exam.

Here is a link to our schedule: http://www.newat.com/training_schedule/

Here is a link to VMware Certification portal: http://mylearn.vmware.com/portals/certification/

--

I am one of the participants in Techtarget’s Server Virtualization Advisory Board. Every couple of months we get questions posed by the editor. This month’s question is what are we thankful for in the virtualization industry.
I talked to Beth Pariseau at SearchServerVirtualization.com about the transitional time that backups are in now for companies. Eventually, the tipping point in organizations allows for a virtualization-based backup solution. Here is the link to the article:

This is a podcast I did with Colin Steele from Techtarget's searchservervirtualization site discussing XenServer growth. From our practical experience in the field, there are two schools of thought at the decision-maker's level that are quite common. Many companies see XenServer as part of the XenApp/XenDesktop stack while others want to keep only one hypervisor, and it's vSphere.

The General Sessions have been pretty informative so far. Its been a bit funny how VMware have mentioned in the middle of other presentations about them buying companies as almost an afterthought. Integrien and TriCipher both are good purchases and TriCipher is a really important one to get the SSO addressed to enable cloud adoption.
The most striking thing to me though is how much VMware have shifted a bit on their approach to desktop virtualization. They sound very much like Citrix now as far as placing the end user experience as the primary success factor to desktop virtualization.

MEDITECH Virtualization is Possible with VMware and New Age Technologies

Virtualization at a glance…

Virtualization lets you run multiple virtual machines on a single physical machine, with each virtual machine sharing the resources of that one physical computer across multiple environments. Typically customers will save 50-70% overall on IT costs by consolidating resource pools. Therefore, unused processing power from each physical server becomes a part of the resource pool, and CPU’s that were typically running at 5-15% capacity on independent servers can now be used at 60-80%. Ultimately the user is unaffected by the change. VMware noted the following as some of the key benefits for virtualization.

“Run multiple operating systems on a single computer including Windows, Linux and more.

Let your Mac run Windows creating a virtual PC environment for all your Windows applications.

Reduce capital costs by increasing energy efficiency and requiring less hardware while increasing your server to admin ratio

Ensure your enterprise applications perform with the highest availability and performance

Build up business continuity through improved disaster recovery solutions and deliver high availability throughout the datacenter

Improve enterprise desktop management & control with faster deployment of desktops and fewer support calls due to application conflicts” (http://www.vmware.com/virtualization/why-virtualize.html)

Can MEDITECH be virtualized?

MEDITECH applications typically run much more efficiently in a continuous mode and can reach up to 40-80% utilization on servers, networks, and storage. Each environment is unique, but overall the questions are the same. They are:

1. What is your current CPU, memory, and network utilization?

2. When are your peak application times?

3. How would virtualization impact these numbers?

4. What would be the ROI?

By running a VMware Capacity Planner across an environment these questions can be answered. This gives the client a unique look at the utilization of their environment and if virtualization is recommended. Not only can we look at the present conditions we can recommend what is possible in the future. New Age has successfully migrated major hospitals all over the US that all utilize the MEDITECH application. Overall each location and client is different but the goal is common. What do you want to achieve with your IT department. Here are the Top 5 Reasons from VMware to Virtualize Software.

Get more out of your existing resources: Pool common infrastructure resources and break the legacy “one application to one server” model with server consolidation.

Reduce datacenter costs by reducing your physical infrastructure and improving your server to admin ratio: Fewer servers and related IT hardware means reduced real estate and reduced power and cooling requirements. Better management tools let you improve your server to admin ratio so personnel requirements are reduced as well.

Increase availability of hardware and applications for improved business continuity: Securely backup and migrate entire virtual environments with no interruption in service. Eliminate planned downtime and recover immediately from unplanned issues.

Gain operational flexibility: Respond to market changes with dynamic resource management, faster server provisioning and improved desktop and application deployment.

Improve desktop manageability and security: Deploy, manage and monitor secure desktop environments that users can access locally or remotely, with or without a network connection, on almost any standard desktop, laptop or tablet PC” (http://www.vmware.com/virtualization/why-virtualize.html).

When facing the annual budget every CIO has to choose where the investments should be made for the betterment of the organization. Who would not want to be able to claim a 50-70% savings due to an invaluable investment into the future? We recognize that MEDITECH virtualization requires more than a technical solution mindset. We at New Age understand the criticality of MEDITECH and our whole team understands that it impacts real patients, nurses, doctors, and administrators. In our next blog, read about what to consider when virtualizing MEDITECH.
