They keep coming to the United States — the men and women from rural Mexico — to work in the flower fields, nurseries, avocado groves and sundry jobs throughout the country. Some would say that they are coming as criminal invaders.

So say rabid anti-immigrant groups such as the Center for Immigration studies (CIS), a John Tanton uber-radical organization in Washington.

There are an estimated 12 million (or fewer) illegal mostly Mexicans living and working in the country.

“I really feel that the Justice Department will be on the winning side of history. I feel strongly that this law is unconstitutional. The Justice Department is doing the job of defending U.S. citizens,” said Mary Rose Wilcox, a supervisor for District 5 in Maricopa County, Ariz. “I think when justice needs to be served, you should never look at political costs.”
While more people in California than anywhere else in the country support the nation’s new health care reform law, that’s largely the result of an overwhelming endorsement from ethnic minorities, according to results released today by the non-partisan The Field Poll.

In March, after months and months of wrangling on Capitol Hill, President Obama signed the landmark Health Care Act of 2010 that expands subsidized health care to millions of uninsured Americans and requires all legal residents to have health insurance or pay a fine. A number of state attorneys general -- all Republicans -- are challenging the law, saying the mandate is unconstitutional.

Many of those polled say Obama’s health care bill should only be a first step with more changes needed. This view is strongest among Latinos, blacks, Korean Americans and Chinese Americans.

Statewide, 52 percent of California voters generally support the new law and 30 percent strongly support it. While non-Hispanics whites in the state are evenly split about the new law, majorities of voters across five of the state’s other major ethnic populations are in favor of it.
Barack Obama to make the first move on immigration reform and for Republicans to reclaim the issue from the fringe.

“The only way we can make this happen is with presidential leadership, and President Obama has failed to act,” said Alfonso Aguilar, former chief of the U.S. Office of Citizenship, appointed by George W. Bush, Thursday during a teleconference of conservative leaders representing faith, business and political groups. “If President Obama were to step up and seriously address the issue, Republicans would step forward and work with him to develop a plan that works. It’s the president’s turn.”

Religious leaders in Arizona said the state’s new law is already having a devastating effect on their congregations. Since SB1070 was signed by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer Friday, making it a crime to be undocumented, clergy say their parishioners have begun flocking to other states, and ministers who serve the poor are afraid that they could be prosecuted for aiding undocumented immigrants.
Jan Brewer signed SB 1070 into law on Friday, making Arizona the first state in the nation to make it a crime for a person to be undocumented.
More than 3,000 people demonstrated outside the state capitol and hundreds gathered at the church to protest the law. Human rights activists, religious leaders and congressmen called for peaceful mobilizations, boycotts and, if necessary, civil disobedience to stop the legislation they believe would lead to racial profiling, unsafe communities and economic turmoil.

Fifteen to 20 million people will remain uninsured under the health care reform bill, the majority of them undocumented immigrants. Undocumented immigrants will not be required to buy insurance or pay a fine of $750, a requirement that applies to the rest of the U.S. population. Certain groups will also be exempt for religious or ethnic reasons, such as American Indians.

Undocumented immigrants will not benefit from the expansion of Medicaid benefits or from government subsidies created to help citizens and residents to buy private health insurance in the exchange program.
The largest public investment in America’s infrastructure since the Great Depression, Obama called it “the most sweeping economic recovery bill in our history.”

But a year later, many Americans are still hurting. And while the Labor Department reports the unemployment rate for whites has begun to fall (to 8.4 percent in January), it continues to rise for ethnic minorities. For African Americans, it is 16.5 percent and for Latinos unemployment is 12.6 percent.
In a 5-4 split vote, the Court lifted the ban against corporations spending money from their own treasuries for political advertisements aired within 30 days of a primary election and 60 days of a general election and lifted restrictions on corporate spending to support or oppose candidates. The majority was composed of justices appointed by Republican presidents, while the dissenting minority consisted of three appointed by Democratic presidents and one by a Republican president. By the way, Justice Sotomayor was among the dissenters who, in Justice Steven's opinion, sharply argued that the Court's ruling "threatens to undermine the integrity of elected institutions across the Nation."
According to the Center for Disease Control, Black and Hispanic children have a greater number of H1N1 deaths since the epidemic started sweeping the nation last March. The agency is not clear about the reason for the disparities. “Blacks and Hispanics are represented in a greater proportion among seasonal and H1N1 deaths in children, than their representation in the U.S. population,” says a report from the CDC, released to the NNPA News Service. “The reasons for more severe outcomes among Black and Hispanics are unknown but may be related to the frequency of underlying conditions that increase the risk for influenza complications in that population or the timing of medical care and or treatment … This racial ethnic disparity requires further study.”

Last week, the Public Policy Institute of California released its latest report, “Californians & Higher Education,” which reflects a spectrum of perspectives on California’s higher education among different ethnic groups. PPIC polled 2,502 adults in five languages – English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese.

Eighty-one percent of Latinos and 76 percent of African Americans believe that college education is necessary for a person to become successful, the report found. Only 57 percent of whites and 66 percent of Asians share the same perspective.
What can you tells us about Presente's origins and purpose?

Presente.org is born of the need to help the Latino community use media and technology to advance its agenda, and to build its power. One of the key ways to do that is to amass a list of people, much like Moveon.org did previously. You build that list by organizing campaigns. Presente.org was born earlier this year, actually. Its first campaigns were around the hate killing of Luis Ramirez in Pennsylvania and the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor. Those were the dress rehearsals for our most ambitious campaign, which was the “Basta Dobbs” campaign [Basta means “enough” in Spanish].
But the effects have been even harsher for African-American and Hispanic retirees and baby boomers heading for retirement, according to a new study by AARP.

AARP’s “Closer Look” survey of almost 1,000 Americans ages 45 or older shows that in the past year ethnic boomers and elders have struggled to pay their medical costs; had trouble paying for food, heating and other essential needs; lost jobs or saw their hours cut; and were compelled to hunt for affordable housing in greater percentages than their white counterparts.

“We are seeing a disappearing middle class,” stated David Certner, legislative policy director of AARP.

Social and economic differences long preceded the recession, but Certner said the “differences have been exacerbated for African Americans and Hispanics.”
A new survey by The Barna Group found that Latinos are assimilating the faith of the Caucasian population faster than predicted, essentially mirroring the faith of the nation's white population, reports the Latino Print Network. However, there were several key differences in religious beliefs: Latinos remain somewhat more likely to believe that a good person can earn his or her way into Heaven; and Latinos are twice as likely as the general population to be aligned with the Catholic church (44 percent vs. 22 percent, respectively). Read the rest clicking below
The event will feature free talks by such groups as the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Occupational Health and Safety Administration. For those who can’t attend the seminars, local radio stations will host three talks on labor rights during which a labor lawyer, a consulate representative and others will respond to call-in questions from listeners.
