Regional Conference Brings State and Federal Information to Local Providers and Consumers

Eastern Carolina Council Area Agency on Aging (ECCAAA) will hold its second annual regional conference, “Living Wise and Aging Well in Eastern Carolina,” on March 6 – 8, 2012 at the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center.

It is increasingly difficult for aging service providers to travel to state and national conferences because of tight budgets and smaller staffs. Therefore, it is our goal to bring information from state and federal agencies to the local level. This year’s conference will feature more workshops and offer pre-conference intensives for providers. Workshops will address Medicare issues, sustaining health promotion programs for older adults, avoiding scams, healthy aging and senior nutrition programs, grandparents raising grandchildren, culture change, aging and driver safety, and many more.

In addition, the “Living Wise and Aging Well” conference will feature interesting workshops for consumers such as researching genealogy at your local library, active outings, positive aging: fitness for the brain, and hoarding. “This year we are reaching out to the older adult consumer. Based on the feedback from last year, we developed workshops related to their requests, and we think they will be very pleased,” says Tonya Cedars, Director, Area Agency on Aging.

The keynote speakers for the conference include Dennis Streets, Director NC Division of Aging and Adult Services; Kevin Robinson, Deputy Commissioner, Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP); and Rodney Kemp, Storyteller and Crystal Coast Historian. The conference is open for everyone including professionals, older adult consumers, caregivers, and advocates.

Eastern Carolina Council Area Agency on Aging is part of a national network of organizations established to respond to the needs of older adults. ECCAAA plans, coordinates, and develops services for adults aged 60 or greater, family caregivers of older adults, and older adults living in long term care facilities according to mandates in the Older Americans Act.

Our agency strives to secure, promote, and provide essential services to enhance the quality of life in a changing society. We meet this challenge through advocacy, coordination, building alliances, and promoting public awareness guided by integrity, vision, and sustained commitment. We serve nine counties including Carteret, Craven, Duplin, Greene, Jones, Lenoir, Onslow, Pamlico, and Wayne.

Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris

Ratio Theatre Company and Outback Steakhouse will present the fourth production of their 2011-2012 season, Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, March 9th -18th at the Scottish Rite Auditorium 516 Hancock St. New Bern, NC. The poignant and passionate music of Belgian songwriter Jacques Brel is brought to life in this two-act musical review based on the music, lyrics and commentary of Jacques Brel, with additional material by Eric Blau and Mort Shuman. Directed by Ratio managing partner, Joey Infinito, with music direction by Judy Harrison, this show features a cast of four polished and professional singers; John Paul Andrews, Andrea Owens, Michelle Roys and John Van Dyke.

Jacques Brel was born in Brussels, Belgium in April 1929 and died in October 1978. He was known worldwide as a Belgian Chanson singer-songwriter, a film actor and director. Although he recorded most of his songs in French, he became a major influence on English-speaking singers and songwriters such as David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and Rod McKuen. English translations of his songs were recorded by many top performers in the United States, including Celine Dion, Ray Charles, Judy Collins, Dusty Springfield, Joan Baez, the Kingston Trio, Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra, Liza Minelli and more.

Brel's songs review the complex themes of life and death, from both spiritual and psychological perspectives, often applying the use of metaphor in his lyrics to make social commentaries on issues such as romantic love, growing old and the middle class obsession with material possessions, alcoholism, and drug addiction.

Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris debuted Off-Broadway in 1968 at The Village Gate Theater in Greenwich Village and ran for more than four years. The production enjoyed considerable international success, and has since played throughout the world.

Performance dates are Fridays and Saturdays March 9th, 10th, 16th and 17th at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays March 11th and 18th at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $22 at the door.

20th Anniversary Corvette Event

The Twin Rivers Corvette Club was founded to provide a focal point for all Corvette Communities in the Eastern North Carolina areas such as, New Bern, Morehead City, Winterville, Greenville, Chocowinity, Havelock, Jacksonville, The Twin Rivers Corvette Club had a very humble beginning with just 4 cars and 6 members in 1981. Since then, the Twin Rivers Corvette Club has now swollen to be able to boast a 2011 membership that included 105 cars. The fellowship and the comradery, as well as the love a classic automobile, invite additional member to come join us. The TRCC supports the Wounded Warriors, MADD, The Food Bank of Eastern North Carolina, The Honor Flight, Carteret Community College and our own GYSGT Michael S. Casey Annual Toy Run to the Marines and their families at the New River Air Station. Meetings are held at 7:00 PM on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at Carolina Grill Restaurant in New Bern. Please arrive at 06:00 PM to join other members for a pre-meeting dinner and socializing.

"We are gearing up for MUMFEST to include the new venue of SeaFair, the 228 foot yacht with three floors of art from local, area and national artist. It will be docked at the Hilton marina, arriving in New Bern on the 10th of October. We invited the Arts Council to partner with us for a Thursday night reception which will be a fundraiser for both of our organizations. We are also expanding the Boat Show, which will now be called Outdoor Life, to bring in businesses that deal with outdoor recreation…biking, kayaking, stand-up boards, fishing etc. We believe it will attract a lot of interest and are encouraging local businesses to participate as vendors, have demos and displays. Every year we add something new to keep the festival fresh and still have old favorites. With the addition of SeaFair and Outdoor Life we should attract record crowds." - Susan Moffat-Thomas

Kindergarten: Ready, Set, Go Parent Information Sessions

Parents who have a child entering public school kindergarten in Craven County this year are encouraged to attend Kindergarten: Ready, Set, Go, a free information session to help parents prepare for their child’s transition to kindergarten.

Children must be five years of age on or before August 31, 2012, to be eligible for public school kindergarten in North Carolina for the 2012-2013 school year.

Two information sessions will be offered and parents may select the session that they would like to attend. The first session will be held on Tuesday, February 21st at the Central Office of Craven County Schools, located at 3600 Trent Road in New Bern. The second session will be held on Tuesday, February 28th in Havelock at Trinity Presbyterian Church, located at 206 Miller Boulevard. Each information session will run from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM, with check-in starting at 5:30 PM. The sessions are for information only; they do not replace kindergarten registration, which will be held on March 9th in the child’s elementary school.

Representatives from Craven County Schools will present information about various aspects of kindergarten enrollment, including requirements, registration and assignment policies. They will also share information that parents can use in helping their child prepare for kindergarten. Each family attending will receive a packet containing kindergarten readiness materials and information about Craven County schools. These information sessions are sponsored by Craven County Schools and Craven Smart Start, Inc.

Pre-registration is required to attend the sessions. Parents should register by February 17th for the February 21st session and February 24th for the February 28th session. To register call the Child Care Resource and Referral Program of Craven Smart Start at 252-672-5921 Extension 21 or send an E-mail or complete a form with the child’s preschool or child care program.

Photo Exhibit commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War

Judy Hills and the Civil War Exhibit

The Coastal Photo Club of New Bern is commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War in North Carolina with a traveling exhibit of 50 photographs. The images, in color and monochrome, include depictions of re-enactments as well as studies of faces and memorabilia that vividly evoke the era.

Contributors to the exhibit are local photographers Chuck Colucci, Jim Dugan, Judy Hills, Jeanne Julian, Tom McCabe, Rick Meyer, Becky Preece, and Tom Whelan.

The exhibit will be on display at the New Bern-Craven County Public Library through February 27th, and then will move to Blockbuster in New Bern as well as the Fort Macon and Kinston/Lenoir County visitors’ centers, The History Place in Morehead City, the Onslow County Museum, the Pamlico County History Center, and the Coastal Carolina Airport.

Also exhibited in the library through February 28 is “Freedom, Sacrifice, Memory,” 24 images from the state archives, the North Carolina Museum of History, and historic sites. New Bern is one of 50 libraries across the state to host the exhibit sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources.

The "Golden Platter" and "Bubblin Brown Sugar" coming to New Bern!

Milton Bullock, aka the "Golden Platter", accompanied by Mary Tate, "Bubblin Brown Sugar", will be coming to New Bern for a Twin Rivers Lions Club fund raising event on April 14, 2012 at 8:00 pm at the New Bern Civic Theatre.

Milton is a former member of "The Platters", whose favorite hits include "Only You", "The Great Pretender", "My Prayer", and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes".

Mexican Ballet Folklorico Quetzalcoatl Show

St. Paul Catholic School is proud to announce a one night performance, of the Mexican Ballet Folklorico Quetzalcoatl. This show will be brought to you directly from Chicago, through the generosity of NCSN Construction Company, LLC, in New Bern, NC.

This is not a ballet as Americans think of it. The Mexican Ballet Folklorico, represents music and dancing from a variety of regions in Mexico. You may see a polka, then a ceremonial dance, something comical, followed by dancing to Mariachi music.

This show performs nationwide and has 28 years of experience, with 50 dancers, ranging in age from 8 to 50 years. The wardrobe consists of authentic costumes made in Mexico. What a wonderful way to learn about our Mexican neighbors in a 2 hour performance.

Come join us at 7pm on Friday, March 30th at St. Paul Family Life Center, located at 3005 Country Club Road, New Bern, N.C. This is directly behind St. Paul Catholic Church and ample free parking is available.

The cost of admission for adults is $12 and $8 for children, with a maximum price of $40 per family in one household. Net proceeds to benefit the school.

Neuse River Senior Games Scheduled for April!

Broadway Babes - Neuse River Senior Games 2011

Registration Now Open

The Neuse River Senior Games (NRSG) and Silver Arts competition are scheduled for April 17-26 at various locations throughout Craven County. The Silver Arts competition is planned for April 18-20. Senior games are an excellent health promotion program for adults 55 years old and better.

Active athletes compete in the various activities such as bowling, swimming, horseshoes, cycling, track and field, croquet, bocci, and shuffleboard. The games are a great way to stay active and meet new friends. “We have enjoyed some mild weather this winter; getting outside and staying active has kept me motivated for the games”, says John Pugh, NRSG Ambassador. Senior Games participants compete against others in the same age and gender categories in a variety of athletic events designed for individuals of various fitness levels.

NRSG planners hope to register more than 250 participants this year. “We work hard to promote not only the games but Silver Arts, everyone seems to enjoy that creative competition as well,” says Johanne Pryor, NRSG Coordinator. Silver Arts celebrates the accomplishments of North Carolina’s senior artists and includes Heritage Crafts such as basket weaving, quilting, and wood turning, Visual Arts such as drawing, painting, and photography, Literary Arts such as poetry, short stories, and essays, and Performing Arts such as singing, dancing, and instrumental.

The Neuse River Senior Games encompasses six counties including Craven, Duplin, Greene, Jones, Lenoir, and Pamlico. Qualifiers in the local games may go to the North Carolina Senior Games (NCSG) Finals held every fall in Raleigh. Every other year participants who qualify at the State Games may continue on to the National Senior Games.

Registration for the 2012 NRSG and Silver Arts ends Friday, March 9th.

This April, the GAL (Guardian Ad Litem, District 3B) program is going to raise awareness about this issue with a powerful visual aid. They plan to have a traveling demonstration of children's shoes on display that represent every child that lost their lives due to abuse or neglect.

Please donate old, worn and used shoes from your home, yard sales or thrift stores. The worn out, the better. And BLUE. We would like BLUE shoes, since Blue represents Child Abuse Prevention Month.

They will be collecting BLUE shoes until the end of March. Please do your part and help stop child abuse.

The New Bern Sun Journal will be the ONLY drop off site at 3200 Wellons Blvd, New Bern, NC 28562, Monday - Friday, 8 am - 5 pm.

Camp Broadway is for ages 6 and older and costs $200.00 per child.

Did you see Sweeney Todd, Chicago, Hairspray or Wizard of Oz? Aaron Williams directed all of these productions. He has won best director at the North Carolina Theatre Conference in 2005 and 2006. He studied acting at the American College in London, England and has a B.S. degree in Broadcast Journalism and English. He has performed in the role of Tim in Noises Off, Kenickie in Grease, Paul in Moon Over Buffalo, Lt. Cable in South Pacific and Lenny in Rumors. He is a certified English teacher and currently works at Craven Early College as a drama and English instructor. He is Vice Principal Panch in RiverTowne's production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee which opens February 16.

Book Lovers' Affair at the New Bern Farmers Market

New Bern Farmers Market hosts its 8th Annual Book Lovers' Affair on Saturday, February 18th from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm.

The market specializes in home grown and homemade. What is more homemade than local talented writers who have written, and in some cases, self published their own books?

Many of these authors write about people and places right here in this area. The settings for Karen Dodd's novels are places that people who live in Eastern North Carolina know and love. James (Jim) White writes about living on Portsmouth Island and Flavius Hall tells about life in the 50's and 60's in New Bern.

Other local authors at this year's event are James Preston Hardison, Earl Mills, Mary Lois Miller, Phil Bowie, Bettye Green, Deborah Wallis, and Richard Grayson. Meet the authors, chat, and take home a copy signed by the author especially for you.

Community Unites to support Empty Bowls Event to Fight Hunger!

If you didn’t buy your tickets early, you missed out on today’s sold out Empty Bowls event to Fight Hunger!

900 tickets were sold, raising about $20,000 to feed the hungry and help the Craven Arts Council. Empty Bowls is a joint outreach project by Craven Arts Council and Gallery and Religious Services Community (RCS) to help prevent hunger.

What a fun-filled event at Temple Baptist Church in New Bern. Everyone seemed a bit overwhelmed by the amount of artwork, both bowls and paintings, it was hard to choose only one!

Area restaurants, community groups, and businesses joined forces to make soup and chili for almost 1,000 patrons. It was another hard choice to decide which ones to choose from!

Special thanks to Jim Bisbee, Potter and Co-owner of New Bern Artworks and Company, and Sculptor Mitch Lewis for participating in the video.

Side note, Mitch Lewis uses his sculpture exhibit to spread public awareness and motivate change to affect the genocide in Darfur. Learn more about this important project by visiting his website: http://mitch.fineartstudioonline.com/.

It was nice to see how local artists, businesses, churches, civic groups, and citizens come together to support our community!

2012 Annual New Bern Heart Ball

The 2012 Annual Heart Ball will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the New Bern Convention Center. National Night Out Committee to present Award to NBPD Chief Summers!

We are happy to announce that the New Bern's National Night Out (NNO) event has won an honorable mention award from the National Association of Town Watches.

This award is going to be presented to NBPD’s own Chief Toussaint Summers at the upcoming February 14th Board of Aldermen meeting at City Hall. The meeting starts at 7 pm and we are first on the agenda.

We realize that many of you are also involved in the Community Watch Group meeting being held on Monday, February 13th at the substation at the mall, however, we want to invite you to attend the Board of Aldermen meeting as well to receive the recognition you each deserve for your hard work in putting on yet another successful National Night Out.
