How to change my IP address? The Internet Protocol (IP) address of a computer on a network is the unique address (at that point in time) that a computer is identified by in a network. It is also the layer that sits atop the TCP/IP layer so that packets can be sent along to this address.

There are two types of IP addresses:-

Static IP: This IP address is assigned by the network solely for a computer and does not change every time the computer is connected to the network. This is to ensure same settings in a Local Area Network (LAN) or a Wide Area Network (WAN) or even a Personal Area Network (PAN). These settings remain intact and thus ensure that the computer gets access to all the data it needs very fast. This type of IP address allocation is used by expensive broadband customers, or by express desire.
Dynamic IP: This IP address is allocated by the network router by using the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). This protocol dynamically allocates an IP address to the computer when it connects to the network, from a pool of IP addresses. This kind of allocation is used in most broadband services as this reduces costs for the Internet Service Providers (ISP's). Thus the IP address of the computer changes every time it connects to the host servers.

To change the IP address of a computer, it is necessary to know what kind of IP address the computer is assigned to and which IP address indeed that computer should change. To change the LAN IP address, one must know what the LAN connection's name is, as well as the original router settings etc.

Change IP Address

The steps to be followed for Windows XP are:-

Open Control Panel from the Start Menu. On Microsoft Windows systems, this is the place where all the settings of the computer reside and many changes can be made here.
Click on Network Connections – the place for all internet connections' settings to reside and new connections can be made and existing connections can be edited or deleted.
Double Click on the LAN connection. One must know the LAN connection's name. Contact the system administrator for detail.
A Menu will pop up with a lot of options. Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) option and click on Properties.
Write down these settings somewhere and then change the IP address of the system.

Twitter

Twitter has become immensely popular in recent months growing from the tech industry into mainstream culture. A presence on Twitter is another must to remain relevant in the industry. Twitter is a great way to market your products and services and interact with existing customers, partners, or industry experts.

Social Media Websites

Social media websites are a great way to see what people are talking about and a platform to promote any free content you may be producing (ie. your blog). You can join the major social media websites such as Digg and StumbleUpon, but I strongly recommend finding niche social networks in your industry to drive targeted traffic.

Social media websites are a great way to launch a viral marketing campaign. For more detailed information on how to do so, read this guide to viral marketing.

Skype/IM

Increasingly, businesses are providing customer support and sales calls via instant messenger or Skype. Hence, this is one trend you don't want to get behind, especially because it is so simple to implement. I recommend having accounts on AIM, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Chat, GMail Chat, and Skype.

Branding Tip

In order to get the most branding value out of these accounts on other websites, stay consistent. Use the same name and images on every account you make so people who see your profile on two or more different web sites will make the connection and associate your online brand image with your company.

Azoogle Contest Round 2 Winners

Tweetmeme Button Increased My Retweests by 100%

Around one month ago I wrote the post Experimenting with the Tweetmeme Button. It marked the day when I introduced the Tweetmeme button on this blog, to evaluate what kind of results it would produce.

The Tweetmeme button reports how many retweets your posts get, and the cool thing is that they have backward compatibility. In other words, I was able to calculate how many retweets my posts were getting, on average, before I had the button installed.

I simply installed the button and went on to count the number of retweets on the latest 20 posts. It turned out that, without the button, my posts were getting on average 26.9 retweets.

After that I waited for 20 more posts to be published, and counted the retweets again. It turns out that, with the button, each of my posts was getting on average 51.8 retweets. In other words, the addition of the Tweetmeme button below the posts increased the number of retweets by almost 100%. You can cross check this result yourself by browsing through the posts on my archives.

Now I am planning to move the button from the bottom left to the top left of my posts, to see if this will also positively affect the number of retweets. Within 20 more posts we will know, so stay tuned.

This music video was shot for Sour’s Hibi no Neiro (Tone of everyday) from their first mini album Water Flavor EP. The cast were selected from the actual Sour fan base, from many countries around the world. Each person and scene was filmed purely with a webcam. The end result is pretty amazing and must have taken weeks of editing. One thing for sure, it’s not an editing that I would want to do!

This week I got an email from the Pingdom CEO mentioning that they are now offering free accounts. That is good news for all small bloggers out there.

Pingdom is basically an uptime monitoring company. In other words, after you create an account with them, they will monitor your website. Should it go down, they will immediately notify you about it, either by email or by SMS (or both). The service can check if your website is up every minute if so you specify, and they make tests from several locations around the world to make sure it is really down.

Until last week you would need to pay $9.95 monthly for a Basic account, which can monitor up to five websites. Now they introduced a Free account (which is not a free trial, but a standard account). The only limitation is that it can monitor only one website. Other than that, you have access to all the features.

My last post showed you how to add an Aweber newsletter sign up box inside your Facebook Fan Page. Now, I’m going to show you how to optimize it to increase the sign up rate.

Now You Can Use Dynamic Subject Lines for Your Feedburner Emails

This was probably the most requested feature in the history of Feedburner. Until yesterday, if people subscribed to your blog via the Feedburner email service, all the subject lines of your emails would be static, containing either the name of your blog or some other text that you would specify.

This is obviously annoying because subscribers can’t know what the email is about before they open it. On Daily Writing Tips we have close to 10,000 email subscribers, and at least once a week one of them would email us asking how come the subject lines only contained the name of the blog….

Well, good news (spotted by Problogger and Technotip). Feedburner was probably working on that feature already, and today they finally released it.

Now you can use the code ${latestItemTitle} to make the subject line of your emails equal to the title of your latest post. Once logged in Feedburner, you can do this under “Publicize” > “Email Subscrptions” > “Email Branding.”

You will find the code there, with some examples of how you can use it. Cool stuff.

Username has many important qualities, it instantly represents you. If you join a social networking site, then you need to have a cool username to gain focus and visibility. Username should be creative, unique and should be able to represent you in all means.

First thing to remember is others need to remember your username, so keep it short and cool.
Misspells have a great impact and look different from others. For example: you can use krazy instead of crazy. But too many misspells spoils the beauty of the thing.
Using too many numbers and special characters is not advisable. You can use one or two numbers like your birthday at the end of the name e.g. krazy11
Most of the sites do not accept special characters in the username field so check for its availability first.
As microblogging is the hot trend, people can write you short messages up to 140 characters only. So keep your username short to save characters.
Your username should not be a tough twister and it should be easy to pronounce so that you do not find it difficult to tell others.
If possible try to include your first name in the username so that people can easily find you.

Twitter is a good platform to promote your business. To gain more followers on Twitter use the same trick as above, do not worry if the username is little long. As long as it says what your business is all about. For example ABC_softTech

The Value of Checklists in Increasing Productivity

One of my main obstacles when it comes to work is staying focused. There a million sources of potential distraction, especially for bloggers and web entrepreneurs who spend a good deal of their time in font of the computer and on the Internet. There are thousands of interesting pages to visit, videos to see, content to read, etc.

Yet, I have found that a good way to overcome these distractions and stay focused is through making a simple checklist of everything that needs to get done in a given day. I have tried dozens of different approaches from downloading software which tracks how much time I spend a day on certain sites like Digg and Facebook and limits my access to these "time wasting sites" to literally blocking sites in my browser where I spend to much time. However, I have found that the simplest solution of just creating a daily checklist, has been by far the most effective solution. Simplicity is bliss.

To illustrate my point I want to share an example from my blog AMBeat.com. AMBeat was built as the ultimate resource for entrepreneurs. It features advice articles, start-up profiles, interviews, news analysis, and more. Hence, there is a lot of work that needs to be put in to keep the site going strong. I need to write articles myself, which often takes an hour or more per piece, research new start-ups to profile, conduct interviews, find qualified individuals to make guest posts on my website, and more. Not to mention this is just for the content of the website, never mind design and server issues, marketing, or monetization.

As you can imagine, running the website is very time intensive and can get very confusing. Through the use of checklists I have solved both these problems, saving time and getting myself organized.

For AMBeat, I divide my checklist into three different categories, content, promotion, and other issues. I then create a list of short term goals that need to be completed within the next week or so.

For the sake of this example, lets use the "content" category of my checklist. I know that in the short term, I need to have at least five in-depth articles written this week and more planned for following weeks. From here I can make a separate checklist for each article complete with everything which needs to get done for that article (research, interviews, etc.) and the deadline for completion of these activities. With these checklists in hand I can go to work completing everything that needs to get done in a timely fashion.

I have similar checklists for the other categories as well. What this does is create a hierarchy of checklists which organizes all the work that needs to be done. With this hierarchy, I can then create a schedule of what I need to do on any particular day and get to work. Once all the work for the day is completed, then I can surf the web.

I have found that this tactic has cut my work time down by more than half. Tasks which took three hours because I would get caught up with E-Mail and IM, now get completed in less than 90 minutes because I am completely focused. Once I am done with a task, then I sign on to AIM or check GMail.

So, if you are having trouble staying focused or feel like you are wasting time try to use this tactic to help you become more productive. It is dead simple to implement and though it requires a little bit of will power to stay on track, when used correctly it is highly effective.

5 Best Sites to Get Answers to Your Questions

The Internet is a rich resource of information on all things imaginable. But while you can just key in a query on the Google search box, you are not sure you would get the right information. This is especially true if you are looking for answers to specific questions. And because of search engine optimization, you're not sure if the site at the top of the result page is there because it's genuinely helpful, or if it's simply there because it's the best-optimized webpage.

Here are five resources that you can use to get answers to questions.

1. Mahalo Answers

Mahalo describes itself as a human-powered search engine with its content mostly user-submitted and edited by a handful of Mahalo's editors. Similarly, Mahalo Answers are made up of user-submitted questions with answers provided by other members. Mahalo's community members are encouraged to submit good quality answers to questions because of the "Mahalo dollars" system. When you ask a question, you can offer a tip to other users who can provide the best answer, which is then chosen either by you or from votes from the community.

To get an answer to your question, first try searching for existing answers to the same or similar questions. Type in your question on the searchbox, and check whether other people have asked—and answered—the question. If you can't find existing content, click the "Ask a Question" link to submit your own question.

2. Yahoo! Answers

Yahoo! Answers works much like Mahalo Answers described above. You can ask questions, answer questions, and if you're just in the mood for exploring what other people are asking about, you can browse by topic or search.

When you ask or answer a question, you are required to login to your Yahoo! account. An added option of Yahoo! Answers is that it can automatically notify you if one of your contacts (from your Yahoo! Address Book) asks a question. Yahoo! also uses a fan system, in which users can be fans of others, so they can follow the answers being posted. Yahoo! uses a point system—you "spend" points for asking questions, and you "earn” points for answering. Depending on how many points you have accumulated, you are assigned a user level, which dictates how many answers or questions you can post per day.

3. Answerbag

Answerbag is another service similar to Mahalo Answers and Yahoo! Answers. The interface is likewise similar—you can search for existing answers by typing in keywords or a question, and if you don't find what you need, you can submit your own question. The nice thing about using the Answerbag’s search functionality is that when it lists possible matches, it also displays the best answer along with the question, which makes it easy to browse for the information you need.

Another difference with Answerbag is that it categorizes the question according to the type and difficulty. These can be "social," which are casual or conversational questions that you would usually ask a friend or relative. These can be "expert," which can be educational questions that are best answered by well-researched and well thought out responses. These can be "local," which are, as the name implies, specific to certain countries, regions or cities. And these can be about "shopping," which are questions about business, commerce or products and services.

4. Twitter

Twitter has been hailed as one of the most flexible platforms for exchanging information online—in 140 characters or less. Originally conceived as a microblogging or lifestreaming application, Twitter has expanded into being somewhat a messaging platform where users can exchange public and private messages both with the rest of the Twitter community or within their own networks.

Aside from messaging, Twitter is also considered a rich ocean of data and information that can be mined. Featuring its own search engine, users can look for discussions and "tweets" on just about any topic imaginable. While you don't usually run searches in the form of questions, you can input keywords or hashtags (which are keywords that start with the hash like #football), which people use to attach keywords in their tweets.

If you can't find what you're looking for with a regular search, you can simply tweet your question, and your message will be read by people who follow you. Assuming you have a considerable following (anywhere from dozens to hundreds), a few friends will most likely respond to your questions with useful replies.

The power of Twitter is not only the number of people exchanging thoughts and ideas, but in its ability to deliver realtime results for your searches. The Web interface for search notifies you whenever there are new posts that match your query. Power users use client-side software like TweetDeck, which enables a user to run multiple columns, each with its own keyword or #hashtag query. These applications will pull feeds from twitter.com on a regular basis, so you are kept posted.

Another advantage of Twitter is that it can be used on different platforms. Apart from the Web interface, Twitter can also be used on mobile phones through phone-based applications (for the iPhone, Symbian or Windows mobile) or SMS. You can get answers to your questions even while on the move.

5. Forums

Lastly, another good resource we can recommend for finding answers to questions are forums. These types of websites have been popular even before blogs, Wikipedia, Twitter and other websites existed. Forums are mainly community-driven. Therefore, how useful a forum will be will depend on how active the community is.

Forums are also specific to a topic or niche. For instance, if you want to get information about mobile phones, you should join a forum that specializes in mobile phones. The same goes for other topics. Remember that when you need to ask a question on a forum, it's always polite to use the search feature first, to see if other people have asked the same question, and if these have been adequately answered.

When you're looking online for answers to questions, sometimes it's best to skip the generic Google search and instead go for something more structured.

Extend Mobile Phone Battery Life

Turn-off wireless connection like Wi-Fi if you are not using them. Most of the people leave Wi-Fi on even in the areas where there is no Wi-Fi network.
Nowadays third generation phones are making their presence in the market. Mobile devices like iPhone 3G, Blackberry and other models have a 3G feature that is useful for fast browsing experience. Turn off 3G feature if you do not use it or if there is no 3G service. You can still browse internet using the GPRS and EDGE services with your phone.
Vibrating alert is another big power hungry feature in the mobile phone. Using vibrating alert is good when you are in meetings or in a library, otherwise you can turn off vibrating alert. Moreover, there is no need of keypad tones and you can reduce ringing volume of the phone if you are not working in a sound polluted environment.
Your mobile phone display also uses lot of power to illuminate. Reduce screen brightness to the lowest level possible where you can see things on the screen clearly. In most of the smart phones, you can load number of applications and utilize them. Terminate applications as soon as you finished working on them. Pressing end key does not terminate the application, they still remain running in the background using up the battery power. You can see all the background applications running on your phone by long pressing the menu key and terminate all the applications that you do not need.
Games are other power hungry applications, they use lot of power and most of the games do not allow the screen to dim or turn off. Play games less to save more on the battery. Even listening to songs and radio on the phone also uses lot of power. So think before you start playing games or listening to songs if you are on low battery.
If your phone supports automatic updates of emails or browser then change the update intervals let us say every 1 hour or so to save more on the battery power. Try using few email accounts and disable automatic update feature if you do not really need it.
Network coverage in another important factor that comes into picture when speaking about battery power. If your phone is in weak network coverage area or in no network area then switch off your phone or keep it in the flight mode to save on the battery. In the less or no network area phone uses lot of battery power to stay connected or to establish a connection with the network.
Turn off BlueTooth when you are not using it. Most of the people ignore to turn off BlueTooth even if they are not using any BlueTooth devices.
Recharge your battery every now and then to ensure that all the electrons in the battery move freely. Modern Lithium-ion batteries work well even if you recharge them before they discharge completely but it is good habit to recharge it after three fourth of the battery is discharged. This will not only improve battery’s performance but also improves its lifespan.
Avoid over heating of the battery to prevent damage to the mobile phone and to the battery. Keep your phone away from the direct Sun heat and any other radiations. Your phone battery works fine in the temperature range of 10 – 35 C.

Joanna Penn describes The Creative Penn as a site …

aimed at people who are interested in writing, self-publishing/print-on-demand and internet marketing for their books (in print/ebook or audio format).

That is a great niche, there are thousands of people struggling to get their book written, published and sold. I know the pull of books very well myself.

Joanna has self-published her print book using print on demand, and also e-books, along with marketing via clickbank, so she has practical hands on knowledge of what she writes about. She also has created an online course called Author2Zero which teaches people “how to use Web 2.0 tools to write, publish, sell and promote your book”.

You know already what I am going to say … yes, Joanna is an Authority Blogger

The content of the blog is great, and Joanna has a great personality that comes across very well in text (as you would expect!), audio and video. While the video is not “slick”, and on occasion lighting and audio suffer a little, I actually think the character of them is an asset and warms you to get more engaged rather than putting you off.

In terms of promotion, the site is currently No 6 on Australia's top writing blogs. This score is based on Google PageRank, Alexa and Technorati scores. Essentially, if Joanna gets a bunch more links then she will be able to top that list.

My first impression was that the red dominates. Spend too long reading and you might get a migraine I guess this pushes people to subscribe to the feed, heh.

"Noisy" layout

The layout is also very busy. There are literally hundreds of links per page - far too many choices without giving clear demarcation and some sense of content hierarchy.

Choose what you want the visitor to do next, then work your layout to support that focus.

As it stands the visitor might well get so confused they do not hang around, I imagine this is reflected in the bounce rate statistics.

Change the colour scheme so red is used only to draw attention to specific focus areas rather than as a block colour. Right now the background dominates, and the colour combinations used in the content cause confusion rather than attract. If you look at my blog, I use spot red for very important locations, and orange as a general “look at me” colour. The rest of the scheme is very much in a supporting role. Make the content come to the fore, the background should, well, be in the background.
Simplify layout and use graphics and HTML boxes to differentiate, clarify and segment the content to add more legibility and context. Right now the layout is “noisy”. When the visitor is given too many choices they make no choice at all. At the moment rather than being helpful the layout is inhibiting the visitor. You need clear sign posts, and remove the clutter. Reduce the categories down to seven as a maximum, lose the Tweets and the tag cloud.
Build links by offering viral blog content resources and networking with other bloggers and writers. You already do a good job of networking, and offer some great free content. What you need to do is turn those around to your link advantage. Repackage some of your already written content and put those to work as series or big resource potsts, then promote promote promote in social media. Also create a writing competition where folks can win copies of your books. Anything to bring the links in to boost your link count and traffic, and in turn grow your PR, Alexa and Technorati scores.

As it stands the vast majority of your links go to the homepage, which is not going to help with your search traffic as you want topical, keyword focused deep links as well as general domain linking for good long term growth.

I would also grab the variation of your domain without “the” (”creativepenn” versus “thecreativepenn”) as some people will instinctively write it without as well as with.

You do not need to throw away your branding. In fact I would suggest the DIYThemes Thesis Theme for WordPress as your base theme, with your existing header would be an excellent evolution rather than a radical departure. This will also give you the advantage of an excellent framework that will make full advantage of the links you grow.

Summary

Right now the content is great but being let down by usability issues. These are easy to resolve, either with the help of a great designer or simply by moving over to a customised Thesis Theme install.

Web Site Story – Epic Internet Musical

Remember the movie West Side Story? It was one of the best musicals ever made. Well, the good forks at College Humor has created their own version call Web Site Story that is nearly just as epic. How College Humor comes up with this stuff, I have no idea. Whatever they are doing, they need to keep it up.

For those who don’t know, West Side Story is a musical Romeo and Juliet story. It was released in 1961 and was the winner of 10 Academy Awards. I highly recommend you watch if you’re into tragic love stories where the guy gets killed in end. Fortunately, Web Site Story has a much happier ending.

Improve Your Search Rankings with Internal SEO

Earlier this year I wrote a post about the stimulus package that passed Congress in February. I titled the post Government Stimulus Package because I thought the only thing it was stimulating was government. I got lucky with this, because apparently a lot of people searched for the phrase "government stimulus package" to learn about what was in it.

The post did ok on Digg and Reddit, nothing spectacular but it brought in some traffic. It may have gotten a few other links, but not a ton. A few days after the post was published, I noticed that I was getting some traffic the search engines. The post was on the front page of Google, around 6 or so for the keyword phrase "government stimulus package." This is the first step in improving your SERPs.

1. Look at Your Stats

Find out which pages you are getting traffic to from the search engines and what keywords are being used to get there. This is where we need to focus. Improving your ranking for a term from 7429 to 43 takes your traffic from 0 to 0. If you can improve from 9 to 1, you will see a huge increase in traffic if it is a phrase that people are searching for.

Now that we have a few pages that are getting some traffic and the keywords they are getting it from, we have to do a little keyword research.

2. Keyword Research

The first step is to find out which phrases we want to target. Look at the keywords that are getting the most traffic and find out where you currently rank. You could use your web analytics program for this, and then check the rankings on Google.

At this point, you can also use a keyword search tool to find out how much traffic each of these phrases gets.

Now we want to focus our efforts on the terms we rank the highest for that get the most search traffic.

3. Internal SEO

Have you ever written anything similar to this before? Go through your archives and find where you have mentioned this topic before. Update the old article with a link to the new one using the keywords you are trying to rank for.

If this is a topic that people want to know more about, consider writing another post or two expanding on the first one. In each new post, link to the original article with one of the keyword phrases you are targeting.

Next, go back to the post you are hoping to rank higher. Is the keyword already in the article? Consider making it bold. Is there a section where the phrase would make a good header? Consider adding it. Don't stuff the article full of keywords as you still want the people that come to enjoy your writing. However, if these changes can be made without affecting the quality, they may help improve your ranking a little bit.

These things do two things. They show the search engines what your pages are about (hopefully the keywords you are targeting) and they show them that they are important pages. The more links you have pointing to the page, the more important you are making it in Google's eyes.

4. Watch your Rankings and Traffic Surge

I went back to my post and made the keyword bold when I used it. Then I went through the archives and found another post that talked about the stimulus package and added a link to the new post. I also wrote a few more articles in the following weeks that talked about the stimulus package, so I linked back in each of those as well. The result? I moved up to #1 in Google for the phrase "government stimulus package" before it passed. It brought thousands of visitors to my blog, and the week that the bill passed is my highest traffic week ever.

The part of this that is really powerful is that all of this was done several days after the article was posted. The regular readers had read it already, and anyone who was going to link to it already had. I was then able to move from #6 to #1 in Google simply by telling Google what the page was about and that I thought it was important. Never underestimate the power of linking to yourself internally.

I have since dropped behind irs.gov and recovery.gov, but that post has been viewed more times than any other. It also gave me a valuable lesson in SEO that has helped increase my search traffic to many other posts as well.

When it comes to auto-following people on Twitter (either manually or with third party applications), there are basically two camps: those who claim it is a bad idea, and those who claim it is a good idea.

People who say auto-following Twitter users back is a bad idea use the following arguments:

When you auto-follow everyone back, in a matter of weeks you will be following thousands of people, and it is impossible to keep track of what they will tweet.
If you auto-follow you will end up following spammers, scammers and bot accounts that are automated, with no real humans behind them
Even if auto-following will give you more followers, those followers will have low quality, because you won’t be able to build real relationships with them.

The folks who think auto-following is a good idea, on the other hand, have the following arguments:

Auto-following will increase the number of followers that you have, so you will be able to leverage a bigger audience on Twitter (for whatever goals you might have)
Auto-following is also polite. If someone takes the time to read your tweets, it is only fair that you do the same with theirs.
By using Twitter tools and applications it is still possible to follow a large number of people, get value out of their tweets and interact with them.
