About the Author:

Born in Mississippi in 1954, Brian M. Talgo later grew up in Westchester County, a northern suburb of New York City.

After wandering aimlessly about the US for several years, working mainly as a carpenter and stonemason, he relocated to Norway in 1981 after foolishly vowing to leave the country if a certain third rate actor became president. After many years abroad he has grown comfortable with his expat status.

The proverbial jack of all trades, Mr. Talgo eventually studied and nailed down a degree in ecology (University of Oslo) but shortly thereafter found himself wandering again, this time down the path of information technology. He currently works as an IT engineer at the University of Oslo, Blindern, while gazing longingly out over the fjords, waiting for his longship to come in. In the meanwhile he writes to fill in the time.

The author presently lives in Oslo together with his wife, son, two cats and a seven-foot avocado tree. A daughter has wisely flown the coop. The Beauregarde Affair is his first major foray into the world of literature.

I'm a writer... At least, I write...

I was five when I wrote my first short story - it involved a car going over a cliff, Jessica Fletcher and the Phantom Raspberry Blower. It didn't have much of a plot (he did it, she solved it) but it did have rather colourful (crayon) illustrations and it did make me realise that writing was for me.
At 12 I wrote my first novel during the school summer holidays. Loosely based on the Famous Five, with a bit of James Bond thrown in, it was an adventure story and my teacher made me read some of it out in class. And that's when I realised that I wanted people to hear my stories and read my work.

Over the intervening years, I have written various short stories, plays, poems and novels in different genres, including romance and children's books. Just like the protagonist in my novel, Shades of Gray, I was the owner of travel agency for 12 years (mostly in the 90's). But this is the only similarity between myself and John Manning! (I never ventured into the cocaine business, I swear.)

I grew up in Greenville, NC and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Economics. All through high school and college, I was notorious for scribbling out stories and ideas for novels (hey, this was before wordprocessors!) and always kept them in a top secret shoe box. (and the box is so top secret that I've been trying to find it for 15 years!).

After college, I fell into the travel industry by accident and was able to grow a travel business into an Inc. 500 company. The agency grew through the use of the Internet and by acquiring three other companies. Late in the 1990’s, I became familiar with the story of one of the my company's clients who was murdered in Durham, NC and was a suspected drug smuggler. This story and the subsequent downfall of the travel agency industry (and my company) after 9/11, planted a seed in my head that grew into my first published novel, Shades of Gray. I began writing this novel in 2003, shelved after completion in 2006, and revived in 2011 thanks to a great friend from a writers group in Cary, NC.

Today, I live in the Raleigh, NC area. I am the father of three, and have been happily married for 20 years. I enjoy (mostly) attending my kids sporting and school events, supporting the local real estate industry, and watching fine films with my wonderful wife. Whenever possible, I enjoy the beauty of North Carolina’s mountains, running, camping, and short walks on the beaches of the Outer Banks (several references to OBX in my book) . I am also an avid reader (time permitting), and a social media goofball. Most evenings I can be found tapping out my next novel, due for release in late 2013. Stay tuned!

The effect of Justine’s death is unknown upon Barrington’s wife, Bernice, who has been institutionally confined for psychiatric reasons. Additionally, Justine’s husband, Kevin Rutledge, a scientist working on a top secret government computer project, has disappeared without explanation.

Chauncey must wade his way through a zany cast of memorable characters to gain information on the murders, but is vexed at every turn. He must first contend with Luther Del Dotto, police lieutenant and personal nemesis, who puts Chauncey down at every opportunity because of his weight and low career status.

He then suffers the indignity of being twice abducted by powerful parties interested in his findings. The first is by Armand Duvalier, suave but brutal crime boss, who hires Chauncey to find Rutledge to recover gambling debts. The second is at the command of Apollo, a federal intelligence agency head, who is also seeking Rutledge for national security reasons.

Despite Chauncey’s earnest efforts, the body count climbs as his investigation widens. He is always a step behind the killer which causes his self-esteem to further plummet. It is not until he survives a brutal attack on his own life that he is able to bring a complex case to conclusion and achieve personal and professional redemption.

Author’s Biography and Publication History

Dan Anderson was born in Vidalia, Georgia, whose claim to fame is being “The Onion Capital of the World.” His family moved to Florida to escape the stress caused by all the publicity from living in such a famous place.
His fascination with humor became evident when he was elected the Wittiest Senior in his high school class (it was a small class and he was too chubby for Most Athletic, too ugly for Most Popular, and too dumb for Most Likely to Succeed).
He graduated from The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee thanks to curricula outlines (think Cliff’s Notes) and buying the notes of students who had actually attended classes.
After college, he was drafted by the Army and served with the Americal Infantry Division in Vietnam. However, he was shipped back to the states a year later when it became apparent that his lethargic military skills had no discernible positive impact upon the war.
On a positive note, he later managed to obtain his MBA from California Lutheran College in Thousand Oaks, California by milking the G. I. Bill until his educational benefits ran out.
Forced to seek employment, and lacking demonstrable talents, he found a career with good pay and low demands: an executive position with a large U. S. financial corporation. When it eventually became evident that he was an imposter in the areas of leadership, organizational theory, and decision-making, he was downsized (i.e., a polite business euphemism for being fired).
He then wandered into insurance and investment sales with another financial company and became wildly successful. This was a total surprise to his colleagues since he rarely showed up at the office, and scheduled few appointments with clients in order not to overtax himself and interfere with his afternoon naps.

Having honed his writing skills completing unemployment applications and wildly fictitious resumes, it was only natural that he would become an author of fiction. He elected early retirement and took up writing on a fulltime basis. Killing Me Softly With Your Love is a republication of Bad Vibrations, his first mystery, which was published in June 2008 and has won a number of literary awards including:

So be it. Ranulf gritted his teeth as he grasped the leading leg and pushed. It was like fighting against a brick wall, the calf barely moving. A lamb was difficult enough, how much more so a calf? Just as he was wondering if one man was strong enough, a shower of pebbles rattled down the bank. Concentrating on the calf, he barked.

“Don’t just stand there. Get down here!”

“I beg your pardon!” A woman’s voice answered.
With a flash of annoyance Ranulf glanced upward.

A wide eyed young woman in a straw bonnet peered down. “I say, is everything all right?”
“Does it look all right?” Muttering under his breath, all he needed was some sensitive Miss fainting on him. “Go! Fetch help from the house.”
He saw her hesitate, biting her top lip. “But you need help now.”
A contraction clamped around his arm as the cow's tail switched across his face, stinging his eyes like a cat-o-nine-tails.
In a flurry of muslin and lace the Miss slid down the bank, landing with a thud in the ditch.
“Ouch.” She rubbed her ankle. Ranulf glared back, dark eyes flashing.
“You should have gone to the house.” Damn it all, she could make herself useful then. “Hold the tail aside.”
Pulling a face she limped over. Ranulf's eye lingered for she merited a second glance. Of middle height with a tidy waist and curves where God intended them, she appeared quick witted and bright eyed. Without further ado, she stripped off her gloves throwing them onto a bramble bush. Long, sensitive fingers grasped the muddy tail. Practical, Ranulf thought, silently impressed.
“Why didn't you go for help?”
“There wasn't time.” Her bonnet slipped backwards, revealing a quirky face with a pointed chin, her lips finely drawn with an arched cupid's bow. The sort of face an artist could lose himself in, all shades of the sea to be found in deep emerald eyes framed by a tangle of chestnut hair.
Ranulf tightened his grasp and pushed. Sweat beading his brow. The calf retreated an inch.
“What are you doing?” Her voice was gentle and calm, if somewhat deep for a woman. Ranulf guessed it would be husky in bed, whispering over a pillow after a night of passion. Her eyes were on him - deep green eyes, lively and entrancing. Suddenly he remembered that he was undressed to the waist, her curious gaze on his skin as he was gripped by the idea of those lily white hands gliding over his naked chest, her almond shaped nails digging into his skin. He shook away the thought, trying to remember her question.
All innocence and interest she watched, blushing faintly in a charming way and yet, he realized, no wilting flower. He shook his head. The woman had asked a question, damn it. He would answer.
“The calf is breech.” He grunted, “I need to push her back into the womb to turn her…” He wanted to shock this stranger, to test how bold she truly was. She stared back, biting her top lip, exaggerating her snub nose.
“Ah!” Her gaze met his.
“Think of the calf as a carriage in a narrow driveway. To turn it around you push it back into the stable yard…”
“What can I do to help?”
“Nothing.” He growled.
Throwing him an angry look, she anchored the tail with a log and scrambled round to the beast's head. After a moment‟s thought, she placed her pelisse under the cow's head stroking the broad nose and crooning words of comfort.
“She's relaxing.” Ranulf's arm was numb from the contractions. He fell forward, as the first leg finally slid back into the womb. "That helps." His hair had come free from the ribbon, falling thickly about his shoulders. He glanced at the Miss. She was leaning forward, her bosom straining against a tight bodice, a satisfying cleavage between her breasts. He swallowed hard. She was odd looking, he decided, not exactly beautiful but eye catching none the less. Her face showed character, determination…and her complexion too healthy to be fashionable, rosy cheeked and peppered with freckles which with a hint of sunlight burst into a profusion.
The Miss was glaring at him now, her skin glowing bright pink. Had he been staring? His heart raced as he returned to the calving.
