Cat Lavoie was born in the small town of Jonquière in Québec, Canada. At the age of nineteen, she packed up her things (mostly books) and moved to the big city of Montreal where she currently lives with her tempestuous cat Abbie--who is both adorable and quite possibly evil.

An incurable Anglophile since her university days where she studied English Literature, she can often be found daydreaming about her next trip to London. Since she's an expert at the art of procrastination, Cat is easily distracted by cooking and home improvement shows--even though she's not particularly good at either.

Cat grew up watching soap operas and legal dramas and--had she not decided to be a claims analyst by day and write chick lit by night--she would have probably become a designer suit-wearing lawyer. Or a character on All My Children (which is what she really wanted to be when she was twelve).

Cat is not sure whether she's a geek or a nerd--and is afraid she might be both. Breaking the Rules is her first novel.

PA novels are often about cataclysmic events, survivors fending off dangers at every page, zombie attacks, aliens destroying everything for inscrutable reasons, or as a fulfillment of the latest religious prophecies. "Daimones" is nothing of the sort.

The novel puts a few survivors in a world having experienced a planetary culling of the human race but there is no immediate cause to be pointed at for the survivors. The Apocalypse has arrived, but why and how remains unknown in a frustrating and fearful reality for the family around which the story evolves, untill the last third of the plot.

"Daimones" explores moral and emotional issues as well as the mechanics of everyday survival for this family: all evidences point for them to be the only people left alive on Earth. The exploration of human relationships and their importance, of personalities and memories, are at the heart of the tale. Confusion, sadness, and fear start to mix into the main character's mind, Dan Amenta.
We are led to feel the disbelief, the anguish, the grief, the frantic search for other survivors through his eyes and the 1st person narration.

Finally, when Dan and his family do find other survivors...they experience the absolute terror of first contact. The ending brings some closure about the catastrophe to this family, but also lays a heavy burden and responsibility on Dan, and opens up the novel to the sequel in the trilogy.

Being a scientist at heart--and by formation--the premises and what happens in the story are very plausible and realistic, if the tale were to be true...

“Who the hell are you?” Georgi demanded. “And what are you doing back here?”
Camden James held both palms up in a gesture of surrender. When the lady at the shop counter sent him to the workroom he had hoped for a more welcoming response.
“I come in peace.”
“What?” Georgi couldn’t hear a word over the music. She moved to turn down the volume as the man shouted:
“Me friend.”
She cocked one eyebrow at him, watching as a red flush colored his face.
“Little early to tell, isn’t it? We haven’t been formally introduced yet.” Her heartbeat had returned to normal and she was over her initial fright. Commonsense told her whoever this man was; he wouldn’t get past Irene and the Happy Gardeners if he didn’t have a bonafide reason to do so. Georgi placed the scissors back on the work bench.
“Me florist” she said.
A slow, warm smile spread across Cam's face. He liked a gal with a sense of humor.
“Now that fact we are sure of” he said.
“What can I do for you?” she appraised the man before her, recognition dawning. Mr. Gorgeous, it was hard to forget those blue eyes—or his great butt. He filled her work room with his presence, taking up all the space and the air or so it seemed. This made her feel small and feminine at the same time. Not to mention just a little off kilter.
“I need some help and the kind lady out front felt sure you would be most accommodating.”
“Irene did, did she?” Georgi made a mental note to have a word with dear, kind Irene about meddling in her private life. I can find my own dates, thank you very much. Providing she felt like dating of course, which she didn’t. But for Irene to infer she would be 'accommodating' was a bit much. It was no use rustling up Tall-Dark-and-Handsome as temptation. This was the third time this month Irene had thrown a man in her path.
“Well, I don’t know what Irene told you but I'm not interested in being accommodating.” She crossed her arms to emphasize her point.
“Oh,” said Cam. “That's disappointing. I had my hopes up.”
“Sorry to dash them so quickly but I'm super busy and just do not have time for dating anyone - no matter how handsome they are.”
“I'm sorry” Cam blinked in confusion. “I was only looking for advice on flowers for a wedding. You've been recommended to me by Wendy Richardson. “
Wendy Richardson was one of the biggest wedding planners in Brisbane. Georgi blushed at her mistake. God, she'd even said she thought he was handsome! Hoping he hadn't noticed that bit of her tirade, she wiped her hands on her apron and stepped out from behind the work bench, hand outstretched.
“When you said Irene sent you through, I assumed…I mean, I thought…never mind. I'm Georgiana MacIntyre.”
“Georgiana of Georgi's Garden.” He smiled a slow, warm smile.

We were on our last game when Carol came up to serve. She hit a nice one but José got to it and gulped a mouthful of sand to set it up for Boyd who spotted it for Greg to come in and spike. Everyone could see it was going to crash right at my feet, but there was no way I could get to it; I was half a step away when a lean figure in cutoffs dashed through the middle of the game and dove directly in front of me.

Wild brown hair all tangled up in the setting sun, he flipped the ball onto my waiting hands as if by magic. His grin was electric. It lit up the gloaming as if he’d swallowed the sun. Without a sound, he twisted like a fish escaping the hook and raced around the corner just as some chick with a water balloon appeared on the horizon between the dorms.

“No fair!” Greg cried as I set the ball for Ronnie.

She got it in their weak spot near the back corner—she was good at that—the back left corner was Boyd’s territory. He came charging under the net on the pretense of anger, and tackled her in the bed-soft sand thus effectively ending the game.

At that, we all flopped down, exhausted. I looked around for the smiling boy who’d saved my game, but he was nowhere to be seen.

“Who was that?” I asked the group at large.

Boyd cocked an eyebrow at me. “Quinn Rose,” he said. “Math major, I think.” Our school was small, a branch of The University of Texas. Everyone knew someone who knew everyone else. It was like six-degrees of separation on steroids.

Carol grunted affirmation. “Chick chasing him was Delilah, his girlfriend.”

I nodded as if it were really no big deal, but Ronnie’s radar had been alerted by something in the tone of my voice.

“Want me to pass him a note at recess?” Her voice was so coy I wanted to throttle her. Instead, I hopped up, brushed the sand from my shorts, and started toward the dorm. Carol jumped up to accompany me.

“Pizza?” Greg called.

Carol and I turned at the same time. She looked at me and I looked at her. “Sure,” we said in unison.

That night, after pizza and beer with Greg and José, Carol and I went for a stroll on the quad. I loved the splashing refrains of the fountains in the brick courtyard. It was the best place for smoking—back then, you could smoke damn near anywhere.

“He likes you,” Carol said quietly.

“Greg?” My voice was deep because I’d just inhaled.

“José.” She didn’t look at me so I couldn’t judge whether she was serious or facetious. “Greg too, I think.”

I stopped walking. I thought we were all just friends. Romantic entanglements were not something I wanted with either of these guys.

“Nah,” I tried to keep it light. “We’re all just buds. Ronnie’s the one every guy fantasizes about.” After I’d said it, I felt kind of small. Maybe I was a tiny bit jealous of our roommate; after all, she was tall and slim with long smooth red hair. Compared to my average, stocky body, and wavy brown locks, she was a supermodel. I didn’t really care that all the guys zeroed in on Ronnie, though. I was so timid I much preferred the background. I was really surprised Carol thought the two guys had even noticed me.

I mulled it over later that night while I lay in my narrow, dorm-sized bed, but when I finally dozed off, it was with another name in my head: Quinn Rose. His face was in shadow, twisted away from me toward the lights that limned the sand-court, but his crazy hair was lit from underneath, and his smile was everywhere.

Christopher Tozier lives in the north Orlando, Florida area and has been selected as a 2011 Individual Artist Fellow for by the State of Florida. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Creative Writing and English program where he served as Poetry Editor of The Madison Review.

His first novel, Olivia Brophie and the Pearl of Tagelus, is a middle-grade fantasy and the first of a series. The book won a silver medal in the 2012 Florida Publishers Association President’s Awards. It is also being taught widely in Florida schools. The author is currently partnering with Archbold Biological Station in Lake Wales, FL in developing an integrated curriculum, blending Language Arts standards with a Science curriculum. Olivia Brophie and the Pearl of Tagelus is a unique fantasy that features central Florida natural history, in particular the Florida scrub.

Tozier’s poems have appeared widely in journals such as Tampa Review, Post Road, Saw Palm, San Pedro River Review, The Literary Review, Cream City Review, The Florida Review, Maryland Poetry Review, and The Wisconsin Review. He has a scientific note published in The Florida Entomologist.

Christopher Tozier is also an active blogger, featuring photography and writing based on life in a Florida scrub.

Fasten your seat belts. Grab on to a good friend and all of your inner resources, for this book is not an easy read. Almost like a soap opera with every page a cliffhanger, this book is one of the most overwhelming, yet persuasively caring books I have every read. Most of all, even in its occasional brutal honesty, it is one of the most helpful pastoral looks at spirituality, especially for the bereaved, that I have ever read.

Andrea Maresco is a bereaved parent. Her young son died of respiratory complications. The death of any child is a horror packed in surprises. The child (Benjamin) died of respiratory problems that were not expected…just like the death of a child is never expected, and certainly never welcome. The book is the diary of feelings, experiences and insights of a woman who lost a child, lost a husband, lost a marriage, nearly lost her own emotional wellbeing, and on many occasions, felt she had lost the God she had come to know and to trust.

Most of all, this is a book about spirituality. While she speaks from the Christian perspective, her honesty and her definitions enable all of us to learn from her experience, fitting her pathways into our own, and reclaiming our own spiritual vitality. This is the book at its best. It is the reminder that spirituality is never easily worked. To suggest that someone is “saved,” and now has it all together, is faulty in both definition and theology. Spirituality is always about relationship, however personalized, and journey or growth.

One strong caution with this book. While it is about bereaved parents and broken relationships, it is, as stated earlier, brutally honest. It is not a book I would give to a newly bereaved or particularly fragile griever. It may be more than some can handle. It is mandatory reading for counselors, lawyers, clergy, group facilitators and others who work with bereaved parents and troubled families. The book is also a wonderful invitation for those who seek meaningful spirituality (even if not particularly comfortable in a Christian framework).

Daniel was born in Durban in 1983. For many years, he worked as a programmer but found little fulfilment. Now he writes about his experiences of growing up and many of the social problems that society faces today. He is a public speaker and hosts speeches and workshops on parenting and related subjects. He has been featured on local radio several times. His aim is to help children have a better start to life.
