SYNOPSIS

In a space of time starting just a few months before the events shown in the first film, a family return home to an apparent burglary attempt. Nothing seems to have been taken other than a necklace belonging to the mother's sister (Katie, from the first film). Soon afterward, strange things start to happen - their Hispanic nanny starts to talk about evil spirits, they notice things moving around the house and going bump in the night. As the time of the first film approaches, certain similarities start to make themselves known...

REVIEW

For my money, the first Paranormal Activity was a masterpiece of modern horror. There was a certain level of backlash, just as with The Blair Witch Project (another movie I enjoyed a lot), but the film was, in my mind, incredibly effective. This might be partly because - due to the difficulties of getting hold of English language cinema screenings in my area - I "obtained" the original screener version. That is, I saw the film with the original, much more effective, ending, alone in the dark in my apartment. It scared the absolute shit out of me, which is why it takes pride of place in my Blu-Ray collection now.

I tried to recreate those conditions with this film, but sadly the film just isn't as good. Shot on a much higher budget, the film tries to expand out the story of the first film by having multiple characters and multiple cameras around the house. This way, we switch between multiple static security cameras, and also get certain character points of view with handheld cameras when things really ramp up.

The problem with this is that we have too much going on, and it dilutes the razor sharp narrative that made the first so effective. There, we had a simple back-and-forth between two characters and saw the changing dynamic within the couple's relationship during the day. Each night, we returned to the same static shot, and were left with bated breath for each scare, scanning the darkness of the doorway, wondering what might come next.

With this sequel, we have a lot of characters - parents, daughters, housekeepers, a dog, a baby... The film has to spend a little bit too much time setting things up and suffers for this in the opening third. When things do start to happen, the multiple cameras dilute the scares, as the anticipation is lost to some degree. Yeah, we see everything from a levitating baby to the family pet being attacked by an invisible force, but it seems somehow silly without the buildup.

Having said that, it's one of the better "found footage" movies that has come along recently. It's worth a watch, and ultimately ties in with the original in some interesting ways. Starting about an hour in, there are some genuinely creepy moments and a few very effective jump scares. By that point, however, the film had pretty much lost mean and the end is rather convoluted. Here's to the third movie, hoping they get on track...

Director: Christian Alvart
Starring: Dennis Quaid, Ben Foster, Norman Reedus, Niels Bruno Schmidt

SYNOPSIS

A man awakes from hypersleep on board a massive intergalactic spacecraft. He can't remember who he is or why he's there, but he knows there's something wrong - there are no lights, the door to the bridge is stuck closed and all data suggests he's been there a lot longer than he should have been.

Another man wakes up soon after, and they have to work together to work out how to rescue the ship - and what the human-like creature roaming the corridors are. Did they kill the crew, or is the related to a form of space madness known as Pandorum?

REVIEW

Pandorum is one of those strange movies that simultaneously seems both highly original and utterly derivative. The basic plot is nothing particularly original - survivors trapped with a massing force of merciless killers - but here it seems almost fresh.

Testament to this is the opening, where we see a couple of hoary old clichés - the Alien-style waking of the astronauts, combined with amnesia. The latter is a plot device that usually tends to annoy the hell out of me and stinks of lazy writing (I nearly threw large objects at my TV when the amnesia plotline suddenly appeared in the first season of 24, for example!). Here, however, it's well handled and seems organic to the plot.

Similarly, the mutated creatures on board the ship are essentially little more than a variation of Firefly/Serenity's Reapers, themselves fairly derivative, yet here they seem fine. In fact, while virtually every frame of the film can be traced back to a previous sci-fi or horror movie, I enjoyed the hell out of this.

Part of this might be the cast - Quaid is always great, Forster makes a decent hero, and the supporting cast are equally fine. In the same way, Alvart's direction is top notch, making the most of what was clearly a very low budget for this kind of movie. While some of the plot twists are a little convoluted, and some of them visible from a mile away, this is definitely worth your time.

Director: Tobe Hooper
Starring: Dan Byrd, Denise Crosby, Rocky Marquette, Stephanie Patton, Adam Gierasch

SYNOPSIS

A divorced mother moves her children to a small town, intending to make a new start running the town's mortuary. The building has been closed for some time

REVIEW

Back in the 1970s, a new master of the horror genre emerged with a blackly comic, masterfully written and subtly directed movie named The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. His name was Tobe Hooper, a man who has gone on to be one of the more unfortunate names in horror history. He has directed one other seminal masterpiece - Poltergeist - but this has been plagued by constant rumours that producer Steven Spielberg and not Hooper himself was actually behind the camera.

Other than that, he has walked a painful line between innovative independent movies and bigger budget studio fare, all of which have had varying degrees of success. Some films - Spontaneous Combusion, Invaders From Mars, Night Terrors - were all-out disasters while others - Death Trap/Eaten Alive, Lifeforce - were noble failures that are decent enough films but just didn't click with audiences.

In the latter category, I'd place Hooper's 2004 slasher remake The Toolbox Murders. It's a decent enough film, though a little uneven and with a rather silly supernatural/witchcraft angle that didn't really belong. But, the direction was solid and it seemed to promise much for the future. Unfortunately, word was that despite this movie being based on a script by Toolbox writers Adam Gierasch and Jace Anderson (with a cameo, if highly disguised, acting performance by Gierasch), it was a dismal failure.

So, having just caught up with it, what's the verdict? Not good, I'm afraid. The direction is fairly flat, with a TV movie feel that makes it seem more like an extended episode of Masters Of Horror than anything that belonged on a movie screen. There's a few characters who are inserted for no other reason than the be annoying and/or "quirky", and the central motivation of the characters to be in the mortuary in the first place is pretty unconvincing to me. The movie also dragged so that by the time the inevitable undead action happens, it doesn't really have any effect.

There are a couple of nice touches, however. I liked the way that the central teenaged characters were drawn - though the annoying bullies that the son comes across are exactly that. The image of lines of fungus growning and feeding from human blood is kind of nice, and there's a couple of nice touches when we finally meet the enemy. But, it really is too little too late.

With Hooper's career having basically stalled yet again (only 2 episodes of Masters Of Horror since this, and a long-gestating adaptation of Stephen King's From A Buick 8 that may or may not be completed), this is a sad testament to a great talent who has been too often completely wasted. Let's hope he returns to form before he retires - but I keep saying that about Carpenter, Argento and Romero as well...
Director: John Simpson
Starring: Keir O'Donnell, Katheryn Winnick, Laura Breckenridge, Jessica Lucas

SYNOPSIS

Three girls, who had all been involved in ridiculing a boy when they were young children, encounter separate but linked fates involving a traffic convoy, a clown and a creep old house.

REVIEW

This was strange one for me in the sense that I was peripherally aware of it for a long time before I'd gotten round to watching it, and it left me with a feeling of both disappointment and pleasant surprise.

First of all, I didn't expect it to be a portmanteau style of movie with intertwining stories. So, like most viewers, the abrupt end & switch after the first story caught me by surprise. That first story was a strong start, effortlessly building tension to a shock twist. The second story is equally strong, though to be fair creepy clowns aren't hard to pull off. But, it all seemed to be a great little gem of a movie.

Unfortunately, things fall apart during the third act. The final story isn't anywhere near as gripping as the previous two and it's also the one where everything ties up and gets explained. The explanation is left wanting, and more than a little silly with characters whose arcs are never truly resolved. it's a shame, especially as director Simpson seems to be a real talent when he gets going (his 2004 effort Freeze Frame was similarly flawed but occasionally brilliant).

As a side note, I don't think I've ever seen any movie get unjustly attacked so much on IMDB for similarities to other movies! The clown features heavily in advertising though only really shows up in one story, leading to claims that it's everything from a remake of Stephen King's IT to a complete rip-off... I certainly wouldn't go that far, it's a great movie for much of its length and short enough so that its flaws never outstay its welcome.
Director: Michael Mann
Starring: Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard

SYNOPSIS

The true story of the notorious Great Depression bank robber John Dillinger, and the attempts to catch him by FBI agent Melvin Purvis.

REVIEW

Maybe it's because I'm neither a big Michael Mann fan nor opposed to digital filming techniques, but I don't see what the fuss was about with this movie.

On the one hand, people were lauding it as a new masterpiece of crime cinema, ushering in a new level of realism to a stale genre and injecting new life into an era often seen as staid and stale on screen. On the other hand, there were those who attacked Mann's decision to use ultra-crisp HD photography and modern movie-making techniques as being at odds with the action on screen.

All in all, I think both of these opinions are misplaced. The visual style and music generally worked for me (although I have to admit I saw it in standard definition). It's not bad, and it certainly didn't seem to anachronistic to my mind. However, it's no masterpiece. It's a decent enough thriller with many of the same tropes used by Mann in his earlier movies - especially Heat. The cast is fine though unspectacular. the supporting cast is great, but not given a great deal to do. The period detail is fascinating but not noticeable after a while. The whole movie is... well, OK.
Starring: Michael Douglas, Kiefer Sutherland, Kim Basinger, Eva Longoria, Martin Donovan

SYNOPSIS

A long-serving Secret Service agent is caught up in a conspiracy when he is implicated in an attempted Presidential assassination.

REVIEW

Not bad, this one but it's one of those movies it's difficult to say something interesting about! The movie is a fairly straightforward conspiracy thriller, whereby some characters are efficiently introduced (mostly Douglas and his affair with the First lady and antagonistic relationship toward Sutherland). Things happen, Douglas has to clear his name and it all ends mostly as you'd expect.

The cast is great, the direction solid and the script fair, but it doesn't really do much when all is said and done. in fact, I saw it just a day before writing this review and details are already blurring to some degree. Any movie with this kind of cast is worth watching and it's a decent rainy afternoon timewaster, but you know you've not got a classic when the most notable thing is that the President is played by the guy who played Sledgehammer!
Director: Chris Weitz
Starring: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Ashley Greene, Rachelle Lefevre, Billy Burke, Michael Sheen, Dakota Fanning

SYNOPSIS

The story started in Twilight continues with Bella's romance with vampire Edward causing problems. He doesn't want her to be turned into one of them, but her presences around blood-lusting vampires is causing tension. Edward decides to leave but that only puts Bella in the path of Victoria - who still vows vengeance over her lover's death - and also into the arms of Jacob - Bella's childhood friend who is actually one of a family of werewolves, the vampires' mortal enemy.

REVIEW

It's something of a surprise that I watched this film given a number of factors. One is that I'm a hardcore horror fan, so any attempt to water down or manipulate the genre tends to be annoying - and few come more manipulated than this series, which ignores much of established lore while aiming everything at the teenage love story market. The other is that, as expected, I hated the first film.

There's many reasons for that, but most of them have been repeated on the net ad infinitum - Bella's pathetic need to be controlled by men, the thinly-veiled Mormon propaganda, the sparkly vampires, etc. But, it's enough to put me off ever sitting in front of this series. yet, for various reasons, I found myself coerced into giving this one a shot. You know what? It's not as bad as the original, although you have to slog through a lot of tired and dumb love story to get to the (relatively) good stuff.

Much of the first half of the film is taken up with typical romantic tropes (as well as heavy-handed nudges toward Romeo & Juliet). Bella is afraid of growing old while Edward remains eternally young. His decision to leave is understandable, if astoundingly badly communicated. From there, Bella mopes around literally for months before latching on to Jacob, who then decides (for reasons nakedly obvious in the first film) to dump her as well.

From there, the most pathetic heroine in recent movie history actually starts growing a backbone to some degree. Well, she's been "developing" one during the film since she worked out that doing something stupidly dangerous allows her to see Edward. But, she starts fighting back a little, and then does something proactive when she has a chance to save Edward instead.

Here's where the film gets a little more interested as the mythos of the world is opened up a bit. Vampires apparently have a hierarchy, and a council named Volturi based in what seems to be Italy (kind of) have the power of life and death over vampires. That is, if a vampire breaks certain rules, they kill them. One of the rules is exposing the existence of vampires to the wider world, and Bella has to rush to stop Edward (who though stupidly contrived serious of situations thinks Bella is dead) from doing this to get himself killed.

It's all fairly stupid, of course. Bella is one of the most obnoxiously selfish and stupid characters ever committed to film - not a good sign for our supposed heroine. Edward is as distant as ever (literally this time for much of the movie), and you never really get to see why, exactly, she would choose him over the much more likeable Jacob other than that's what the script says. The "daredevil" aspect is utterly laughable, although not quite as stupid as the vampire baseball in the first movie, and the whole thing ends on a "yep, we're making a sequel" not, though that was of course obvious by this point.

So, not a complete waste of time and the climax is at least interesting, but why this series is so popular escapes me. I might end up watching the next couple of movies just to see if the dark areas I've heard that the novels finally start to contain is translated on screen, but I still have no expectations.

Director: Marc Price
Starring: Alastair Kirton, Daisy Aitkens, Kate Alderman, Leanne Pammen, Tat Whalley

SYNOPSIS

Colin is a freshly turned zombie, who stumbles around his neighbourhood during a zombie outbreak.

REVIEW

There's 2 things that really made this otherwise pretty minor movie stand out when it was released on DVD last year. First of all, it's an unusually staged movie, taking from from the point of view of a zombie during a zombie uprising. Second, it was apparently produced for a budget of £45 (about US$65)!

Now, there's problem inherent with both of these facts, and it doesn't take long for either of them to become visible. To start with, following a zombie around isn't actually all that interesting. After all, especially as we're talking about the grunting, shuffling, George Romero-style zombie, we don't get a lot of dialogue. So, we see Colin shuffling from one place to another watching or participating in some attacking of human beings. Price does try to pad the movie out a little bit with flashbacks to Colin's living self and a few other detours, but the movie does drag a little (at 97 minutes, it's also at least 20 minutes too long).

Compounding this problem is that £45 doesn't buy you much. The film seems to have been done on an experimental basis, using free software, previously existing digital media and unprofessional or volunteer actors. The price of this is of course the quality of the finished film. It doesn't look good, and while the actor portraying Colin himself isn't too bad, the supporting cast isn't very good.

Overall, like El Mariachi, Pi, Primer, Clerks and all the other "made for nothing" movies that get a lot of press, this is an inspiring movie that makes you want to get up and make a movie instead of just watching or writing about them! Unlike those movies, however, it's no classic and while it should be applauded for trying something different with the overpopulated zombie genre, it's pretty mediocre and wouldn't have gotten much attention had its reported budget not been so ridiculously low.

Director: Chris Columbus
Starring: Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario,, Sean Bean, Pierce Brosnan, Steve Coogan, Rosario Dawson, Kevin McKidd, Uma thurman

Based on the novel by Rick Riordan.

SYNOPSIS

Percy Jackson is a high school student who struggles with school and his ignorant stepfather. He's got few friends, struggles to study at school and has a very low attention span. However, one day he's attacked and forced to confront his actual identity - he is a demi-god, son of the ancient Greek God Poseidon. Unfortunately, he's also falsely accused of stealing Zeus' lightning bolt and has to travel to hades to rescue his mother and clear his name.

REVIEW

Well, this was a surprise. I'm usually fairly good at predicting the artistic (if not always commercial) success of movies and this has "pathetic cash-in" written all over it. The plot sounds like a mere re-tread of the Harry Potter movies, and it's directed by the man who brought us the first two Potters - frankly mediocre before they got really good with the 3rd movie.

So, imagine my surprise when it turned out to be actually pretty good, and very entertaining! Part of this might be the fact that it's based on Greek mythology. The script has fun rearranging the famous myths for a new setting, and manages to have a fairly light hand at introducing them. They're never heavy-handed - no drawn-out exposition scenes for newcomers to the classic characters - and there's a lot of cameos for famous actors playing them. Everybody seems to be having fun and the film just keeps moving.

There's pretty much nothing that really stands out as not working here. The central cast are capable, the effects are good, there's enough darkness to satisfy the source (e.g. Medusa really does kill people when they turn to stone) and it doesn't drift too far into sentimentality. About the only real downside is that seeing Pierce Brosnan as a centaur is a little strange to say the least!

Overall, a great afternoon piece of entertainment, and I'm hoping a sequel will be forthcoming.

Director: Al Adamson
Starring: Roy Morton, Tacey Robbins

SYNOPSIS

A family is held under siege following a jewel heist, as the thieves responsible had hidden the diamonds in the father's truck.

REVIEW

Al Adamson was one of the most infamous names in drive-in and exploitation fare during the 60s and 70s. He was mainly notorious for the cheapness of his fare, and the fact that he'd often re-edit existing material re-release it under a different title.

This, in fact, was one of his most notorious productions having been re-edited and re-released many times under such titles as Blood Of Ghastly Horror, The Man With the Synthetic Brain and Echo of Terror. This original version was thought lost, but it's managed to surface on Troma's DVD label and popped up for some reason on the UK satellite channel Movies4Men.

It's pretty much as you'd expect from Adamson's output. It's very cheap, with some bizarre non-sequiturs (such as the bizarrely racist doll the young girl carries around with her) and some extremely bad editing and acting. the soundtrack is notably annoying, and almost every sequence in the film is padded out to ridiculous lengths.

Still, it does have a strange charm about it, although certainly not recommended for anyone other than those with a high tolerance for crap.

Director: Tom Hooper
Starring: Michael Sheen, Colm Meaney, Timothy Spall, Jimmy Reddington, Henry Goodman

Based on the novel by David Peace.

SYNOPSIS

The story of Brian Clough's disastrous 44 day reign as manager of Leeds United in 1974.

REVIEW

This is an unusual movie for me, as I really, really don't like football. I'm not particularly keen on most sports, but growing up in the UK it's hard to avoid football in particular and it can be annoying. I don't care about the game and although my interest can be piqued somewhat by the World Cup, even then I only care about the result and not the tactics or behind-the-scenes action.

However, I'm not so prejudiced that I can't recognise good drama and filmmaking and this is a film that proves it. Flashing back and forth between Clough's early days at Derby Country and his resulting rivalry with Leeds United manager Don Revie. The motivations and dynamics of the characters are laid out very clear, and you don't have to like football to get Clough's drive to beat Revie's results at Leeds or his relationship with management partner Peter Taylor.

As ever with what is essentially a small-scale drama, the performances are what counts and this has some great ones. Michael Sheen is great as ever and gives a great imitation of Clough's mannerisms, and he's ably backed up by the likes of Timothy Spall, Colm Meaney and Jim Broadbent. It's also nicely topped off with some footage of the real players in action at various points and the real people portrayed at the end of the film.

This film (and the book it's based on) has been criticised for straying from the truth a little too much, but it doesn't matter too much in my mind. It's a neat movie that holds the interest of even a football luddite like myself, and well worth the watch.

Director: Colin Strause & Greg Strause
Starring: Steven Pasquale, Reiko Aylesworth, John Ortiz, Johnny Lewis, Ariel Gade, Kristen Hager

SYNOPSIS

A Predator spacecraft orbiting Earth is carrying a payload of alien creatures, who impregnate one of them and cause the ship to crash near a small American town. A disparate group of local people have to fight against the odds, while a Predator is sent to help destroy the alien threat.

REVIEW

I did have high hopes for this at one point. One of the great problems with the first AvP was that it was PG-13 and seemed to miss the point of both franchises at the same time. The Antarctic setting of that movie seemed to go against one of the main things we knew about Predators, and the modern-day setting undermined some of the issues raised in the Alien franchise. The rating meant there was little gore, and even the sound effects for the creatures seemed off.

So, here we were with a movie built from the ground up to be an R-rated movie and the red band trailer looked awesome. But, I never bothered watching it until now... The buzz was deadly, suggesting that the movie was a mess and that every great shot was in the trailer. There was also the problem of the movie being set in the modern day - no, the problems of modern American teenagers and a dysfunctional family have no place in either franchise. So, I skipped it.

Thankfully, it's not that bad, although my low expectations may have had something to do with my relatively positive reaction. First of all, the movie has some balls - something that's missing from most Hollywood movies. We see children and pregnant women actually come to some harm and not used as mere props to tease the audience. We see the effect that an organic acid would have on a human being. We see glimpses of the Predator homeworld, as well as a few more tidbits about Weyland-Yutani's origins.

But, it's a pretty average slog for the most part. Worse, the directors seem to be the kind of fans who think it's clever to drop distracting "homages" to the other films. So, we get a character named Dallas, a little girl that's obviously meant to be a reference to Newt, one character that shouts "get to the chopper!", countless music cues, etc. It's distracting and although it would have been nice in a better movie it's just a little silly here.

Worse, several points of the plot seem to contradict both their own internal logic and what we already know about the creatures. For example, the predator that's dispatched to clean up on Earth has vials of blue liquid which he pours over the alien's victims - presumably to stop indigenous life from being aware of them. Why, then, does he skin and hang the first person he attacks, drawing attention to him and his prey? The Weyland-Yutani corporation clearly get hold of a beam weapon toward the end of the film, so why was no beam weapon available in Aliens? Why did breeding with the Predator suddenly alter the aliens' lifecycle?

It's a shame as this had so much promise, but it's not that good. not terrible, but not anywhere near what it should have been...

Director: Koldo Serra
Synopsis: Gary Oldman, Paddy Considine, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Virginie Ledoyen, Lluís Homar, Yaiza Esteve

SYNOPSIS

In the 1970s, two couples take a trip away to the north of Spain, where one of them spent a lot of time as a child and is renovating his parents' old home. They're not looked upon kindly by the locals (although grudgingly accepted when it transpires that one of the couples speak fluent Spanish) but they keep themselves to themselves - up until they discover a deformed young girl locked away in a shed.

REVIEW

Since Frightfest co-organiser Paul McEvoy has joined the team at the UK Horror Channel (formerly known as Zone Horror), I've noticed a definite rise in quality of fare on the channel. While there's still the fair share of shot-on-DV zombie movies and crappy knock-offs produced by The Asylum, many of these are now being replaced by actual quality movies. What surprised me with this movie is that not only is it a great movie that wouldn't look out of place on the regular Frightfest schedule, I'd never actually heard of it before!

This is especially surprising as it's a movie with a definitely A-list pair of leads, and it's a Spanish co-production, so with that being my current adopted home, you'd have thought I'd have seen something...

Either way, it's a solid production with a lot of concentration on the character aspects of the piece. Oldman is cocky and arrogant, obviously comfortable with the language and local customs of the village (although he's not been there for many years), which Considine is the fish-out-of-water, trying desperately to understand what's going on around him and dealing with a rocky marriage on top of it all.

The story is slow-moving and familiar in many ways - we have the redneck hicks, the deadly secret and the fight for survival. But, the direction is solid, the script tight and the performances almost universally excellent with a few nice surprises near the end.

it's a well-kept secret as far as I'm concerned (although feel free to call me out on this if it seems obvious to you!), and I'll be very happy if gems like this surface on the channel in future.
Director: Scott Charles Stewart
Starring: Paul Bettany, Lucas Black, Tyrese Gibson, Adrianne Palicki, Dennis Quaid, Charles S. Dutton

SYNOPSIS

The archangel Michael returns to Earth in order to help defend a group of people trapped in a remote diner. Angels are possessing the living and killing in order to get at the as-yet unborn baby being carried by one of the waitresses.

REVIEW

I've heard a lot of bad things about this movie, but I actually enjoyed it as a throwaway piece of entertainment. To be honest, it really depends on what you want from the movie. If you're religious and you don't want to be offended, stay away, as all we really get here at the end of the day is a Night Of The Living Dead scenario in a diner being attacked by angels that don't bear much direct resemblance to the biblical stories.

Same goes to anybody who's expecting anything deep, meaningful or particularly scary. There's not a lot here that we haven't all seen before, and even the pseudo religious elements were done better in The Prophecy, 15 years ago.

That said, former special effect man Scott Stewart does show some style behind the camera. He's made a fairly entertaining ride that doesn't really hold up all that well on a scripting level but does the job. A great cast, including the underused Dennis Quaid and Dutton do help quite a lot as well.

So, not the atrocious work I'd been lead to believe but an entertaining timewaster with some unusual action setpieces. Apparently, Stewart likes this subject matter as his next film (entitled Priest) is also a religious-tinged action fantasy starring Paul Bettany...

Director: Kevin Hooks
Starring: LeVar Burton, Louis Gossett Jr., Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew, Tim Russ

SYNOPSIS

Kunta Kinte and Fiddler encounter a freed slave who is soon captured and enslaved once more for helping other slaves escape to the north. However, he still has friends on the underground railroad that might help him escape once again.

REVIEW

The original miniseries of Roots made television history, breaking viewership records and – due to more diverse modern viewing habits – will probably never be beaten as the most watch programme in TV history. One of the most notable revelations was a young actor, LeVar Burton, whose strong portrayal of the enslaved African Kunta Kinte was a breakout performance. Sadly, the plot required that he was replaced by a different actor to portray Kinte's later years.

During the 1980s, however, Burton had become a well-known actor both for his role as Geordi LeForge in Star Trek: The Next Generation and for hosting the children's book show Reading Rainbow. With a sequel to the original miniseries having taken Alex Haley's family history to the modern day, it was decided to revisit an earlier part of Kinte's life, here before Kinte has his foot removed for trying to escape too many times.

It's a rather slight and realistically pointless exercise, but it's nice to see these characters again. Gossett Jr. and Burton seem to effortlessly slide into their old roles while it's intriguing to see Burton teamed with future Star Trek actors Mulgrew, Brooks and Russ.

Being a TV Christmas special made in the 1980s, as well as being a story to which we know the ending (i.e. we know that the attempt to get Kinte and Fiddler to freedom is doomed), there is a mawkish feel to the whole thing as well as a feeling of general pointlessness to the whole exercise. Having said that, it's nice to see new footage from this classic TV series.

So, a bit of a throwaway exercise but there's enough here to keep interest so long as you don't expect anything too special.

Director: Tim Burton
Starring: Johnny Depp, Freddie Highmore, Helena Bonham Carter, Deep Roy, David Kelly, Noah Taylor, Missi Pyle, James Fox

Based on the novel by Roald Dahl

SYNOPSIS

Charlie is a young boy living in poverty with his parents and grandparents. Every birthday, he gets the same present - a chocolate bar from the Wonka factory, which is located near by. Nobody has seen Wonka for years, he lives apparently alone as a recluse, yet his factory keeps operating with nobody entering or leaving the building.

One day, Wonka announces that there are 5 golden tickets randomly included in his bars and the children who receive them will be taken on special tour of his factory, which is a very unusual and magical place indeed...

REVIEW

Despite being a much-loved children's classic and a favourite of many children, Roald Dahl reportedly hated the original adaptation of his classic novel, retitled Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory. I can certainly see where he's coming from at point, though it's probably the best version of his story that could have been filmed at the time. There's something extremely strange and disturbing about Gene Wilder's portrayal of Wonka, and the music, and it has both a slightly cheesy and creepy aesthetic.

As the title suggests, this is a more faithful adaptation of the novel, though it falls somewhat short due to familiarity with both the source and Burton's work, while Depp's Wonka is no match for Wilder. Depp has clearly based his performance on Michael Jackson which, while creepy in a more overt way, doesn't really match Wilder's unnerving yet hypnotic performance as the eccentric Wonka.

That having been said, the movie does seem to stick to its aim of being as close to the book as possible and does a great job of it (at least, from what I can remember from reading it many years ago). From here, I suppose how you take the movie depends on your familiarity with not only the book, but also the previous movie and Burton's overall body of work.

For those familiar with both the book and Burton's other fantasies (as I am), it's a little disappointing as in there are few surprises. I know that I'm a long way from being the target audience, but I found the movie both visually impressive and rather predictable. The other thing worth noting is the Oompa-Loompahs, which are all here played extremely well by one actor, Deep Roy. It's quite impressive, though fans of the original don't seem to like the non-orange-faced look.

Overall, an enjoyable movie though younger kids will probably enjoy it much more than I did.
Starring: Timothy Olyphant, Dougray Scott, Olga Kurylenko, Robert Knepper, Ulrich Thomsen, Henry Ian Cusick

Based on the video game series.

SYNOPSIS

Agent 47 is an assassin bred to be the ultimate killer, working for a shadowy agency named "The Organisation". However, he is betrayed and targeted by the same organisation and has to fight a political conspiracy in Russia.

REVIEW

Here we have another pleasant surprise, but not a massively spectacular movie. I had avoided this for a number of reasons, but mostly the history behind the movie. First of all, it's a movie based on a videogame, which rarely works once the script's been through the studio meat-grinder. Very few movies based on games escape as enjoyable pieces of entertainment in their own right, and fewer still manage to do so while bearing any resemblance to their models.

On top of that, there were a lot of stories about trouble on and off the set. Original star Vin Diesel (a perfect physical match for the game character) was replaced by Olyphant - an actor who annoyed me no end in Die Hard 4.0. He just seemed... wrong. On top of that, director Xavier Gens (whose Frontiere(s) I enjoyed quite a lot) was apparently fired from set and the studio ordered reshoots that caused major deviations from the source material.

So, I was quite surprised when I found myself actually enjoying this movie. Never above the level of mindless entertainment, but it kept me engaged and involved throughout. Olyphant isn't bad here and doesn't seem anywhere near as wimpy as I expected. While the storyline is pure connect-the-dots action thriller stuff, it has a nice wraparound and is focussed as much on an Interpol agent as it is on the "bad guys" and the protagonst.

Overall, not bad but it didn't set the world alight. But, compared to Uwe Boll videogame adaptations and similar cinematic atrocities, it's very good.

Director: Ti West
Starring: Noah Segan, Alexi Wasser, Rusty Kelley, Marc Senter, Giuseppe Andrews

SYNOPSIS

In the first Cabin Fever, the last surviving victim of the flesh-eating virus managed to make it to the local river before dying. Unfortunately, an unscrupulous “spring water” factory is taking untreated water out of the river to sell to a local high school, just in time for the senior prom. One batch of punch and a few fatalities later, not to mention quarantine by the army, and things don't look good!

REVIEW

I had pretty low expectations for this movie going in, ironically because of its credited director's own statements. I was in London for Frightfest last year, and West did a Q&A while promoting his new movie House Of The Devil (a very good, if slow moving, film by the way). There, he answered a few questions about this sequel to Eli Roth's début, and essentially said that the movie had been taken out of his hands and re-shot, and that he was only credited because the traditional “Alan Smithee” credit was no longer available. From what he said, it sounded like this was going to be an abortion of a movie, edited down from his original splatter-filled vision.

However, it's not only pretty good, but also on the hardcore end of what you'd normally expect from a studio sequel. For a start, while parts of the movie are definitely played for laughs, it's nowhere near as uneven as the first film. The high school element helps fill up the cast with bodies for splatter gags, while the inevitable massacre of the prom is pretty well done, there's only so much a disease can do. So, we get a bunch of army guys with mysterious and nefarious motivations while Guiseppe Andrews returns as the stoner, cheerful but dumb and incompetent local cop who ties the events together.

There's pretty much it. I can't recall everything West said in the Q&A but I do remember him saying something about the opening and closing animations. They're pretty bad, I can see the style they were going for but they don't really work and stink of "we have plot holes to fill but won't allow the budget to shoot live action". The epilogue is also pretty tacked on and doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and there are lurches in tone throughout the movie that do indicate tampering - especially as House Of The Devil is such a tightly constructed work, it's difficult to reconcile the messy work here as simply being West's own.

Overall, it's an enjoyable movie that, despite its many flaws, still manages to be a fun little movie that's better than most direct-to-DVD movies, though I would hope that a director's cut would become available at some point in the near future.
Director: Pete Riski
Starring: Skye Bennett, Noah Huntley, Dominique McElligott, Ronald Pickup, Mr. Lordi, Kita, Amen, Ox, Awa

SYNOPSIS

A father and his autistic daughter are stuck in a lift along with a security guard, a nurse and a few other people at a hospital. The lift soon moves again, but they find the hospital suddenly deserted apart from some murderous, demonic creatures.

REVIEW

Dark Floors is a movie that's actually a hell of a lot better than its gimmick gives it any right to be. It's a movie showcasing Lordi, a band that made some waves a few years ago by winning the cheesy, middle of the road Eurovision Song Contest, a pop music content that pits all European nations against each other to see who can write the best song. Lordi made waves because they won despite being a Finnish heavy metal band who wore elaborate troll make-up and costumes. That obviously caught the eye of some movie producers, because this movie followed not long afterwards.

Happily, this isn't the mess it deserved to be from its inception. What we have here is a pretty standard “alternate dimension” story (the type that just allows large locations to be used for minimal budget) where a handful of disparate characters have to find their way out of the place they've found themselves accidentally transported to. Here, the characters are never particularly annoying (apart from one guy you just know won't see the end credit!) and are often quite interesting. The central dynamic between a distraught father and his autistic daughter is particularly unusual and helps speed the movie along its mere 90 minutes of running time.

What also helps is that Lordi are apparently a band with low band egos. Whereas many bands would demand every possible second of screen time and derail the movie in the process, their appearances here are kept to the minimum required for the story. We don't even see one of them until almost 30 minutes into the film, and their appearances are kept spread relatively thinly throughout. This is nice as it makes the movie a “proper” horror story rather than a simple ego trip, and keeps the film enjoyable even if you don't know or care who Lordi are.

Overall, not a record-breaking or ground-breaking story, but an entertaining horror story that surpasses its cheesy roots.
Starring: Matthew Wolf, Amy Weber, Shaley Scott, Eliza Swenson, Griff Furst

SYNOPSIS

In the distant future after a long losing battle against an invading force of giant robots, humanity has one last chance to regain the planet.

REVIEW

During the 50s and 60s, it was quite common for B-movie producers to rush to market with copies of upcoming Hollywood productions. Producers such as Roger Corman, who worked quickly and cheaply, sometime found that they could actually beat the major production to screens and siphon off some of the bigger production's market this way. One famous example is Rocketship X-M, which beat its expensive, painstakingly realistic model Destination Moon to screens, leading to lawsuits and many advertisements about which was the "real" movie!

During the 80s and 90s, this tactic fell by the wayside somewhat, as independent production companies such as Cannon fell by the wayside (ironically, partly due to several flop Indiana Jones rip-offs such as Firewalker and King Solomon's Mines) and Hollywood based their movies on expensive effects technology that the independents could not hope to replicate on their budgets.

So, fast forward to the modern day, and enter The Asylum. With digital technology, this direct-to-DVD specialist has found it easy to rush out what have become termed "mockbusters", harking back to the hucksters of old. You can see where they're coming from just by looking at a majority of their titles: Alien vs. Hunter, I Am Omega, Snakes On A Train, even a couple of War Of The Worlds movies since the source is in the public domain.

Here, we get the inevitable cash-in on the first Transformers movie ( a sequel to this was produced to cash in on the sequel to that film). However, it's worth noting that it's really as much of a rip-off of the future war sequences in the Terminator movies as anything made by Michael Bay.

Once you realise this, it's pretty much by-the-numbers stuff. We get a few battle sequences – mostly loaded in the back end of the movie due to the relatively expensive CGI required – surrounding “character” scenes. It's pretty much soap opera stuff, mostly typical of movies like this that have to fill time with dialogue rather than action, and it's pretty blandly directed. It's completely unaffecting, to the point that when one character has the revelation that he's actually a cyborg, it was met by eye rolling and “meh” from me rather than the intended shock.

That said, it's a passable time waster and it's probably the best of the Asylum-produced movie I've seen so far. Given that more than one of their titles has enabled me to get to sleep, that's hardly a recommendation though.

Director: Joseph Green
Starring: Jason Evers, Virginia Leith, Leslie Daniels, Adele Lamont, Bonnie Sharie

SYNOPSIS

A brilliant surgeon has been experimenting with transplants on the edge of the possibilities of current medical science. Travelling back to the lab one day, he's involved in a car crash that leaves him unharmed but decapitates his girlfriend. Distraught, he manages to bring her head back to life and sets about finding a replacement body. She's not so convinced, however, and sets about using her new-found telepathic link with one of his failed experiments to get revenge on the man now imprisoning her.

REVIEW

This is one of those strange movies that acts as a kind of bridge between the different eras of horror movies, from the rather staid and dry '50s to the gory and hysterical late '60s B-movie. Originally shot in 1958 but not released until 1962, this would surely have been a rather shocking movie to those who saw it back then, and yet the set-up would have been familiar to most.

The story itself essentially combines two classic set-ups – the mad scientist with a living head or brain in the lab (see the novel Donovan's Brain and its many adaptations), and the attempts to restore a former beauty despite her will as in the French classic Eyes Without A Face. Here, we flash between the scientist's attempts to obtain a new body and his girlfriend's first lamenting of her condition and then plans for revenge.

Unfortunately, it's with both of these sequences that the movie starts to wear out its welcome. The scientist's travels might have been salacious back in the late 50s, but viewed today it's interminable padding. We see several nightclub sequences that amount to absolutely nothing, culminating in a dialogue exchange with a model “man hating lesbian” (who apparently became such after dating our “hero”) that's probably far funnier today than it would have been back then.

We don't fare too much better back in the lab. The surgeon's assistant, left with a deformed arm after an unsuccessful previous transplant attempt, seems to spend an inordinate amount of time *almost* catching the girl in her attempts to communicate with the mute creature behind a locked door (another failed experiment) and the shtick wears thin quite quickly. Ditto the voice-overs/monologues from the girl as she explores her new-found powers and then finally demonstrates them in a rather unimpressive show of power.

The movie does redeem itself and show its cult origins toward the end, however. I must admit I was rather shocked at the climax, which features 2 rather surprising displays of gore that wouldn't loom out of place in a movie made 20 years later had the movie not been in black and white. First, we see somebody get their arm ripped off. Not only is this surprising for the era, we also see an unprecedented sequence where the victim takes altogether too long to die, rubbing their bloody stump all over the place leaving a trail of blood. When the creature behind the door is finally revealed, not only does he bear an uncanny resemblance to Sloth in The Goonies, but he also has no problem biting a chunk out of someone's neck in full close-up, followed by a shot of the torn flesh that could come from any modern zombie movie you wish to name!

Overall, while the movie does wear thin at many points and feels like a 45 minute movie stretched to feature length breaking point, there's still much to recommend it. Not quite the lost classic many have claimed, it's a very useful movie to watch at least ones.

Director: Sergio Martino
Starring: Michael Sopkiw, Valentine Monnier, Anna Kanakis, Romano Puppo, George Eastman

SYNOPSIS

In the near future, following a nuclear holocaust, no children have been born for 15 years. With humanity on the brink of collapse, one man is given a mission: to go into the hostile ruins of New York and rescue a woman believed to the the one remaining fertile female.

REVIEW

So, does the above synopsis sound familiar? One has to wonder whether or not P.D. James watched this movie before writing the original novel of Children Of Men. OK, probably not! Inevitably, this movie isn't quite as classy or as innovative as the 2007 adaptation of that novel, though it has much to recommend it.

Directed by giallo master Sergio Martino, this is one of numerous New York based, post-apocalyptic movies that followed in the wake of both Mad Max 2: Road Warrior and Escape From New York. Among such company as Bronx Warriors and The New Gladiators, this is probably one of the better movies in the cycle, with Martino's direction being swift and the script imaginative on the typically low budget that keeps action relegated to sewers and warehouses for the most part.

The cast is reasonable for this kind of fare, with the main trio of heroes being very good and the always welcome George Eastman's appearance in the final act made me smile quite a lot - anyone familiar with video nasties and other Italian movies of this period will know his fact for sure!

Of course, it suffers in other ways typical of the period. The dubbing's fairly bad, the acting is passable at best with most cast members relying on charisma rather than acting chops. it all ends with some rather silly twists, but again no better or worse than similar films of the era.

Not Oscar material, but a great little movie if you fancy a no-brainer time-waster on a lazy afternoon...

Director: Mimi Leder
Starring: Antonio Banderas, Morgan Freeman, Radha Mitchell, Robert Forster, Rade Serbedzija

SYNOPSIS

A master art thief recruits a younger man to help him steal a rare set of Fabergé eggs from a highly secure building. However, his stepdaughter's romance with the man, his debts to the Russian mafia and an obsessed cop on his trail all threaten to derail his plans.

REVIEW

Well, file this one under "meh" for me, again... It's not a bad little thriller, the cast is great and the plot manages to pile on some decent twists toward the end, some of which were genuinely surprising. but, the movie as a whole just didn't really grab me as much as I'd hoped.

Maybe, it's just the weight of the clichés that put me off - I mean, how many movies are there now about master thieves and their proteges? Maybe it's just that Leder's direction doesn't grab me? Her two best-known movies (Deep impact and The Peacemaker) failed to grab me either, and she seems to have spent most of the intervening years producing and/or doing TV work.

That said, Freeman and Banderas are as likeable as ever, while the supporting cast do their job well (it's always nice to see Forster in a decent role). Worth your time, but definitely nothing special.
