Opera Software recently announced that it was starting to look to the future, which as far as the Opera browser is concerned, involves a species of predatory fish.

With Build 2005, the Norway-based browser vendor is offering early adopters the chance to take the Alpha release of Opera 11.10 “Barracuda” out for a spin.

But end users need to understand that this release is designed for testing environments, and should not be deployed into production, especially since various problems, crashes included, are to be expected.

“In this build, Core has been upgraded from version 2.7.62 to 2.8.99, which is a pretty big step forward. With this Core upgrade comes the implementation of the Web Open Font Format (WOFF),” revealed Manuela Hutter, from the Opera Desktop team.

“In addition, a batch of changes to network compatibility has been implemented. The purpose of these changes is to modify our network behavior so that we are more compatible with other web browsers.”

Mac OS X testers will undoubtedly notice that Opera 11.10 “Barracuda” Alpha Build 2005 is designed to play a tad nicer with Facebook, Live Mail/Hotmail, and Google Docs, with the number of crashes having been reduced.

However, there are still issues that plague the release. But users should not read all that much into this, since Build 2005 is an Alpha snapshot after all.

Opera 11.10 “Barracuda” Alpha Build 2005 will not deliver HTML5 media playback on Mac, and it will not, at least for the time being ace the Acid3 Test, with mouse panning being broken on Windows.

Changes introduced include: “Disable Cookie2 by default, with an option to enable it again; send more compatible Accept header on second request; disable TLS 1.1 and 1.2 by default; make sure redirects from http to https are labelled secure; remove the use of master password for client certificates; added a preference to disable cross-network protection,” Hutter added.

Again, this is just the first release of Opera 11.10 “Barracuda,” and it will certainly be worth watching where Opera Software will take this version.

Microsoft has made available for download the Antarctic theme pack which is now live on the Windows Personalization Gallery.

Situated at the opposite poles of the Earth, the Arctic and Antarctica are still home to some amazing sceneries, as well as to a variety of species.

The imagery included in both themes does an excellent job of depicting these remote locations, as well as examples of the local fauna.

People which find penguins to be amazing are bound to get a theme to their liking with the Antarctic collection of background images.

I’ve included a number of screenshots with the imagery in the Antarctic theme with this article, to serve as previews of the content.

However, since the theme pack is available free of charge, there’s really nothing stopping users from downloading it.

Windows 7 users will be able to install it by simply clicking on the theme pack file. Customers running operating systems other than Windows 7 should still download the theme and extract the wallpapers with an archiver.

“Life at the bottom of the world: Penguins frolic in this free Windows 7 theme featuring images of Antarctica and the South Atlantic's natural beauty,” reads the theme’s description.

And here’s a small tip. Microsoft has packed metadata along with each wallpaper. Users should right click the wallpapers, select Properties and then the Details tab.

The information accompanying the wallpapers is designed to reveal a tad more about the contents of the photo.

I highly doubt it that there are that many users capable of telling the difference between scenery from the Weddell Sea and the Adelie Sea, so the metadata will provide additional details.

Norton Internet Security 2011

Norton Internet Security 2011 contains some changes to its interface, although the design is heavily reminiscent of the previous version. It keeps the dark theme, punctuated by yellow text, but moves the large graphic security status indicator from the main interface window up to the taskbar and system tray icons. As long as you don't mind the lack of empty space in the interface, it works quite well.

Security controls have been condensed into three sections in the main window: computer protection, network protection, and Web protection. To the right of each category is a series of controls, which by default are all active. Click on one, and its gold indicator moves to the right and changes color to red to show that it's been deactivated. A window then pops up, asking for how long you'd like to deactivate the service. This cleverly resembles Windows 7's "postpone reboot" option for system updates, so even novice users should find it recognizable. Click on the name of a control, such as Antivirus, and a pop-up appears summarizing what the feature does.

Below each category are several controls specific to that area of protection. So, under computer protection, there are text buttons for instantly initiating a scan, for forcing a virus database update, for accessing your History or Quarantine, and for viewing Application Ratings.

At the bottom of the interface is a wide, short map of the world covered with blinking yellow dots. Each one, according to Symantec, represents a threat to one of its users that has been successfully blocked. The visual is cute, but completely irrelevant to your personal safety. More interesting is that below the map there are a series of mobile-app-style buttons. From there you can access Norton Online Family, Norton Online Backup, and Norton Safe Web without having to jump into your browser.

The main interface for Norton has changed again, although it retains its color scheme. The new UI is impressively easy to use. Norton AntiVirus 2011 users won't get the Web protection section, and they'll see fewer app-style icons at the bottom.

Features and support

There aren't many new features in Norton Internet Security 2011, or even new major features. What's changed is in how Norton presents its features--across the board the program is easier to navigate--and how the features operate.

The reputation-based security checks where your programs were installed from and when they were installed, and compares that data against the 58 million users participating in the crowd-sourced Norton Community Watch to see if any of your programs should be red-flagged. Norton's System Insight component has been bumped up to version 2.0, which is the proprietary internal network that warns you when your programs unnecessarily hog system resources. This gives some extra heft to the system performance map, where you can click on any spike and see what caused it.

The second iteration of Download Insight applies the same reputation-based logic to new downloads, and the third version of Norton SONAR (Symantec Online Network for Automatic Response) looks for suspicious software behavior and automatically chooses protective actions. You can toggle how aggressive SONAR is in the Settings window.

Internet suites have included system monitoring and repairing tools for some time. Through charts and settings windows, Norton lets you see its impact on your system, and how your system at large is doing.

Along with the quick scan, full system scan, and the custom scan for viruses and malware, you can now have Norton scan your Facebook wall for malicious links. There's also on-demand reputation-based quick scans, full scans, and custom scans for users who want Norton to immediately scan their installed programs. After completing a scan, Norton provides users with a summary report. More-detailed information, including scan duration and a deeper dive into threats discovered, can be read under the History option from the main window. There's also a link so that you can follow in case you believe that Norton missed something in its scan, although as the reputation-based protection matures, the need for on-demand scanning becomes less of an issue when compared with the "always-on" protection offered here.

The bootable recovery tool isn't new, but it now comes with a feature that automatically creates a CD, DVD, or USB-based bootable device. The USB component is especially important on optical-drive free systems such as Netbooks.

Norton continues to dabble in free security offerings, including the Norton Online Family parental controls, the "lite" version of Norton Safe Web, and the new Norton Power Eraser. Power Eraser is a new tool that will aggressively clean your computer of fake antivirus programs and other malware that prevents legitimate security tools from being installed.

Norton now offers a Facebook wall scan, for checking links on your wall to see if they're malicious.

Interface

The changes to AVG's interface in the 2011 version are minor but actually improve usability quite a bit. The top and left navigation sections have been redecorated with light text on a dark background, although the main controls in the center of the window retain their standard black text on a white background. The safety status icon at the top of the interface has been simplified and made larger.

A new one-click Fix button for automatically repairing security breaches appears at the top along with the old red X when your system safety has been compromised. It disappears when your system gets a clean bill of health.

Joining the one-click Update button on the side nav this year is a one-click Scan Now button. There's a cleaner look to the nav, as well, with bigger fonts and timestamps for the most recent scan and most recent update.

For those not familiar with the interface, AVG has placed icons for its security components in a central pane. Double-click on one to access more information and basic configuration settings for each specific tool. Advanced settings are available under Tools on the menu bar at the top of the window.

The new interface changes are small, no doubt, but they do make AVG easier to use.

Features and support

AVG Free has some new protective features this year, too. The software offers what it calls "smart scanning," which leverages AVG's behavioral detection network to scan known safe files once, and only rescan them if it detects changes. As with its competitors, AVG's network is made up of its user base anonymously contributing data up to the cloud. You can choose to opt out of contributing your data when you install, or from the options menu. AVG says opting out won't negatively affect your security.

The never-ending mantra chanted by security suite vendors sounds a lot like "faster scans, easier to use, better performance," and AVG has released a new version of AVG Anti-Virus Free 2011 that it says accomplishes all three. Certainly, the scans are faster, it does install more quickly, and some tweaks to the interface have made it easier to use.

The smart scanning tech also gives you a built-in system resource manager that prioritizes scans. If a scan is scheduled to begin while the computer is in use, it will automatically restrict the scan so that it runs slower but doesn't interfere with the computer's other tasks. When it detects the computer idling, it will then allocate more power to the scan. The feature comes with a slider so you can customize how sensitive it is.

Another big improvement has been to AVG LinkScanner. LinkScanner, which comes with AVG Free but is also available as a separate download, now scans links posted on Facebook and MySpace. It adds a green check next to safe links, a red X next to unsafe ones, and adds a notice below the link stating that it's been evaluated by AVG.

Concurrent with this new release, AVG has opened a new Web site called Threat Labs. The site is designed as a click-through landing page for people who want to learn more about the LinkScanner's ratings, but it's also available directly so that non-LinkScanner users can evaluate links on the fly.

Another important new feature is the resource-managing slide at the bottom of the window. Drag it to adjust how big of a burden the scan will be on your system, including the default setting for

taking more resources only when your system is idle.
