They're Making An Andre The Giant Movie, But Who On Earth Could Play Him

2016-05-10T08:03:00.000-07:00

While most biopics try to tell larger than life tales, the story of Andre "The Giant" Roussimoff is one that is hard to beat. His stature was only exceeded by his reputation, as both a wrestling legend in the World Wrestling Federation and an actor in such classics as The Princess Bride. Now his story of extreme fame, and his secret pain, is about to be brought onto the big screen – all thanks to his daughter.

Variety broke the news today that Andre's daughter, Robin Christensen-Roussimoff, is helping the biography, Andre the Giant: Closer To Heaven, become a motion picture. Under the guidance of production house Stone Village, which is run by producers Scott Steindorff and Dylan Russell, the 2015 graphic novel detailing the life and times of the man more simply known as "Andre the Giant" is on a bit of a fast track to production. Which leaves a burning question hanging in the air: who's going to play the man, the myth, the legend himself?

While there's no official casting mentioned in the item announcing the film's production, one man comes to mind when it comes to playing the role of Andre the Giant. Robert Maillet.

NFL's Vikings draft German wide receiver Boehringer

2016-04-30T21:46:00.001-07:00

Los Angeles (AFP) - The Minnesota Vikings made German wide receiver Moritz Boehringer the first European drafted directly to the NFL on Saturday, taking him in the sixth round.

Boehringer got interested in the gridiron game five years ago at the age of 17 -- when he saw a video of Vikings running back Adrian Peterson.

Peterson's team took him with the 180th selection overall in the 2016 draft that began on Thursday.

"I can't describe how I feel right now, just happy to be drafted," said Boehringer, who played four years in a German league but unlike the other Europeans who have made it to the NFL has never played in North America.

Germany's Bjoern Werner, for example, was drafted in the first round in 2013 by the Indianapolis Colts after playing collegiate football at Florida State University.

"I follow the Vikings, just because (Peterson) brought me to football," Boehringer told an NFL Network television interviewer minutes before he got the call from the team -- who were urged on by NFL Network commentator Mike Mayock.

Woods books accommodation for Memorial, say sources

2016-04-30T21:33:00.002-07:00

Tiger Woods has made accommodation plans for the Memorial tournament in Ohio, sources have told Reuters, suggesting the Jack Nicklaus-hosted event could mark the former world number one's PGA Tour return from back surgery. Although Woods has made no commitment to the Memorial, and his plans remain fluid as he rehabilitates his body, it makes sense that he would want to compete in at least one tournament before the year's second major, the U.S. Open. The Memorial tournament, to be played from June 2-5 on the Muirfield Village course in Dublin, a suburb of state capital Columbus, is held two weeks

Donna Edwards Blasts The Media And Democrats

2016-04-29T08:09:00.000-07:00

WASHINGTON — If you ask Rep. Donna Edwards, the polls and the newspapers — and even, on some level, people in the Democratic Party — have it wrong.
Days before the Maryland Democratic primary, in which the congresswoman hopes to defeat her colleague in the de facto race to replace retiring Sen. Barbara Mikulski, Edwards told BuzzFeed News that it’s misleading to poll this close to election day, sharply critiqued recent Politico and Washington Post pieces about her candidacy — and said that the suggestion within her own party that she is unqualified is racially coded.
Edwards’ race against Rep. Chris Van Hollen was always considered a challenge, but she has proved far more competitive than expected, keeping even with him in many polls. On Thursday, however, a Monmouth poll in the state put Edwards down double digits to Van Hollen.
She’s not worried about the poll, she said, casting it as misleading.

Uber To Pay Up To $100 Million To Settle Suits With Drivers

2016-04-27T07:55:00.000-07:00

Jeff Chiu / AP

Uber announced Thursday it had agreed to pay up to $100 million and make numerous policy changes as part of a settlement in two class action lawsuits filed by drivers.

The settlement represents a major victory for the ride-hailing company. The case began when Uber drivers sued in California and Massachusetts, arguing they should be classified as employees. Uber countered that its drivers are instead contractors, and thus not entitled to the same benefits as full-time employees.
The settlement allows Uber to continue classifying its drivers as contractors.
As part of the settlement, Uber also agreed to pay $84 million, with another $16 million contingent on the company’s value increasing in the future, Shannon Liss-Riordan, an attorney who worked on the case, said in a statement to BuzzFeed News.
Uber made several policy concessions to drivers as well, including providing more information on why drivers have been banned from the service and helping to create “drivers associations.”
Uber will also allow drivers to place signs in their cars telling customers that “tips are not included” and would be appreciated, according Liss-Riordan.
Other concessions to drivers include policies that prevent drivers from being kicked off the service for low acceptance rates, policies that provide drivers with warnings prior to deactivation, and panels where drivers can appeal their termination to their peers.

AC/DC lead's 'darkest day'

100+ CNN

AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson is speaking out about his hearing loss.

Fans knew that Guns N' Roses front man Axl Rose would replace Johnson on AC/DC's "Rock or Bust" world tour. But on Tuesday, Johnson, who has been with the band for 36 years, detailed what led to his decision and what he called the "darkest day" of his professional life.

Singer Axl Rose to join AC/DC "Rock or Bust" world tour

"On March 7th, after a series of examinations by leading physicians in the field of hearing loss, I was advised that if I continue to perform at large venues, I risked total deafness," Johnson said in a statement. "While I was horrified at the reality of the news that day, I had for a time become aware that my partial hearing loss was beginning to interfere with my performance on stage."

Johnson, who joined AC/DC in 1980 after the death of original singer Bon Scott, said he was having trouble hearing the guitars and other musicians on stage.

AC/DC reschedules shows to save lead singer's hearing

"Our fans deserve my performance to be at the highest level, and if for any reason I can't deliver that level of performance I will not disappoint our fans or embarrass the other members of AC/DC," Johnson said. "I am not a quitter and I like to finish what I start, nevertheless, the doctors made it clear to me and my bandmates that I had no choice but to stop performing on stage for the remaining shows and possibly beyond."

Johnson said doctors have advised him that for now he cannot perform in loud stadiums or arenas. But he said he has no plans to leave the music industry permanently.

"My doctors have told me that I can continue to record in studios and I intend to do that," Johnson said in his statement. "For the moment, my entire focus is to continue medical treatment to improve my hearing. I am hoping that in time my hearing will improve and allow me to return to live concert performances."

AC/DC is expected to soon announce the rescheduling of 10 U.S. dates that will include Rose at the microphone.
