Management Aptitude Test- MAT

Management Aptitude Test or MAT Syllabus

MAT is the MBA entrance test conducted country-wide by the Centre for Management Services (CMS) of All India Management Association (AIMA). It is usually conducted four times in a year in February, May, September and December. MAT is conducted in all major cities in the country and in leading cities abroad.

Eligibility
The minimum qualification for appearing in MAT is graduation in any discipline from any recognized University or equivalent recognized degree. A final year student in any undergraduate (i.e., B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., B.Tech., etc.,) can also appear provisionally. Usually, there is a minimum percentage requirement in graduation, which is different for different MIs / University.

MAT Syllabus
The Management Aptitude Test or MAT is the test conducted by All India Management Testing Service for entering into MBA or equivalent post graduate programmes.
There are five papers in MAT:
1. Language Comprehension
2. Mathematical Skills
3. Data Analysis
4. Intelligence & Critical Reasoning
5. Indian & Global Environment Section

Paper Pattern:

Tips and Strategies

The paper is objective with multiple choice questions. You will have to be quick and alert to score high in the paper. In this article, you will find some tips and tricks to prepare for MAT:

* Time is of utmost importance in MAT. It is advisable to stick to the time schedule given below to finish the paper on time:
o 30 minutes for English section that assesses verbal ability and language comprehension,
o 40 minutes for Mathematics where quantitative aptitude is evaluated,
o 35 minutes for Data Interpretation that judges the candidate's data analysis skills and understanding of data sufficiency,
o 30 minutes for Reasoning Ability, where intelligence of a candidate is judges along with his or her critical reasoning skills, and
o 15 minutes for General Awareness section, where candidate's knowledge of Indian and global environment, especially of contemporary issues, are judged.

Each section has 40 questions.

* Though similar to CAT in its structure, MAT is easier compared to it. Its pattern is more predictable and unlike CAT (which emphasizes on application of knowledge), MAT is based on knowledge itself. Thus, students who are good in memorizing formulae and standard set of questions and answers, often grab high scores on this test.
* Thorough practice of sample MAT tests available from a variety of sources such as book, CDs and online, can prepare you well for the real examination. Achieving 85 to 90 per cent scores in a MAT exam can be considered a good attempt.
* For English section, grammar is very important and question-types include analogies, synonyms and antonyms, match the list, idioms, one word for many and fill in the blanks.
* Though not all institutions accept MAT scores in General Awareness, you still need to prepare for it. Reading newspapers is the best way to keep yourself abreast of the current affairs and developments in India and world in general.
* For Language Comprehension, two strategies are commonly used:
o Reading the passage and attempting to solve the answers, or
o Have a look at the questions and then read the passage, so that you know what to look for.

Decide your own strategy, depending on your inclination, comprehension skills, personal aptitude and difficulty-level of the passage.
* Having formulae on your fingertips, being strong in mental calculations and developing your own short cuts will prove very useful to score speedily in Mathematical and Data Interpretation sections.

Reasoning section requires thorough practice of all types of questions. Since there are no fixed formulae to tackle them, the scores depend on how much you are familiar with myriad of questioning patterns.

Top 5 MAT Colleges

Alliance Business Academy (Bangalore): Alliance Business Academy is ranked among the top 15 private B-Schools in India. The fine quality of its placements and its superior infrastructure make it a preferred choice for AIMA MAT top scorers each year. The AIMA MAT cut-off for ABS is between 93-98 percentile. Alliance Business Academy has an A++ grade in the list of management institutes in India.
Christ College Institute of Management, Bangalore: Based in Bangalore and one of the best known colleges of Bangalore, CCIM has a reputation for culture, quality and of course, good placements. The usual cut-off for getting a call from Christ college through AIMA MAT score is about 95 percentile and above, but there have been cases where candidates have received calls at a score of 92 percentile.
Indian Institute of Finance (Delhi): IIF was launched in the year 1987 as an Independent Non-Profit educational institution to advance education and research in Finance. IIF has made separated scholarly parts acclaimed nationally and internationally. It is ranked at 30th place amongst Top 100 out of 3,546 Universities in Regional and Global Ranking of Indian Subcontinent Region. The usual percentile for MAT is 90 percentile and above.

Its quality education and location in Delhi makes it a preferred choice among AIMA MAT takers too.
IMS (Ghaziabad): The minimum graduation score to get admission through AIMA MAT in IMS is 50%. Based in Delhi NCR region, IMS campus is 25 acres. The AIMA MAT cut-off for IMS usually lies between 80 to 85 percentile.
BIMTECH (Noida): The lush campus of BIMTECH in Noida, the NCR of Delhi takes candidates for various programs through AIMA-MAT score. Their selection process is followed by a GD and PI. The AIMA MAT cut off for BIMTECH is 85 percentile and above.

All of the above mentioned MAT colleges are reputed management colleges. Those who score above 95 percentile in MAT exam 2011 December & 2011 February should look at above mentioned MAT colleges. Although these positions keep changing a little bit, but broadly the best of MAT colleges remain the same.
