Review: Top Secret Target

`Top Secret Target` is a mass market love inspired paperback book by author Dana Mentink. It's a great book for readers who enjoy suspense. From the very first chapter, this book has you sitting on the edge of your seat. Lieutenant Ethan Webb's ex-wife is on the hit list of the Red Rose Killer.

Kendra Bell, PI, looks like Ethan's ex-wife. Working together can they stop the killer before he kills Jillian? `Top Secret Target` is more than a suspense book. It's also a book on love for animals. Kendra loves her cat and Ethan loves his K-9 dog, and the animals love their owners.

I highly recommend this book for fans of suspense.

Review: The Audacious Molly Bruno

`The Audacious Molly Bruno` is a woman's book of prayer and godly living by author Marie Armenia. Marie is the daughter of Molly Bruno. In the introduction to the book Marie likens the life of a Christian to that of making a meatball. Beginning with softening the meat (heart). Marie leads the reader step by step through the process of making a meatball and how it relates to the process God does in perfecting His people. The producers of `War Room` depicted Molly Bruno's real-life prayer-warrior for the part of "Miss Clara" the movie's prayer-warrior.

Molly went home to be with the Lord when she was 92, she lived a good long life and left behind a multitude of life lessons which are listed in this book. Also included are several scripture references to life lessons. The main thing about this book is not the focus on Marie's mom even though she was a woman of huge faith, but the focus is on Christ Jesus and how He answers prayers. I did not read this book by coincidence, I believe it was God ordained.

I recommend this book to Believers and Seekers of the true faith, whether a young or mature believer in Christ, this book is for you. Or, maybe you just want a recipe for making a good meatball, that is included in the back of the book. This is one book every woman will want to refer to again and again.

This new digital album features 19 tracks, including two new songs, five recordings never before released and 12 more autobiographical songs selected by Cain as companion tracks for his first book and audio book, Don't Stop Believin': The Man, the Band, and the Song that Inspired Generations, which became a Publisher's Weekly bestseller following its release May 1 (Zondervan Trade).

The title track and new song about one’s legacy, “The Songs You Leave Behind,” is being premiere-streamed now by Billboard and features guitarist Miles Schon (the son of Journey guitarist Neal Schon). The second new song on the album, “What Else Have I Missed,” is dedicated to Cain's children and highlights the talents of Grammy Award-winning songwriter Gary Baker and legendary steel guitar player Dan Dugmore.

The never-before-released songs on the project include “Waitin’ On The Wind,” “Crossing The Great Divide,” “Shine,” “Mixed Blessings” and “The Day They Became Angels,” the latter track commemorating the tragic school fire in which 92 of Cain’s grade school classmates died. Cain first performed the song during the standing-room-only Memorial Mass, 50th Anniversary of the fire at Holy Family Church in Chicago.

“The fire shook my faith as an eight-year-old child,” remembers Cain, “but when I look back now, I see a thread of redemption. That tragedy forever changed fire codes around the world, saving countless others.”

Several more tracks that appeared on Cain’s solo albums Anthology (2001) and Back To The Innocence (1995) were remastered for the new album at Cain’s state-of-the-art Addiction Sound Studios in Nashville by producer, mixer David Kalmusky known for his work on multiple Platinum albums.

The songs provide the soundtrack as Cain released the first memoir by a member of the band Journey. `Room on the Porch Swing` is an Amish romance novel by author Amy Clipston. Allen Lambert's wife has passed away, after being violently sick, and he is left with their new baby, Mollie, to raise by himself.

Laura Riehl is a friend of the Lambert's so she tries to help take care of Mollie. Laura's beau is jealous of Allen because Laura spends most of her time at Allen's house taking care of Mollie. Would jealous feelings break a good friendship?

This is a novel that pulled me in with its twists and turns. It is a novel of family and friendship. There were several Amish words, but if you read it in context they are easy to understand and don't take away from the novel.

I recommend this novel to fans of the Amish.

1. The last place you visited/patronized where you felt like you were given 'the royal treatment'?

I was given the royal treatment Mother's Day week. My son fixed supper and washed dishes each day for a week. We had leftovers on the weekend, so I didn't begin cooking until the Monday after Mother's day.

2. The last task you completed that was a 'royal pain'?

Washing dishes..I have degenerative disk disease so standing at the sink to wash dishes is usually painful. I usually have to sit down half way through to take the tension off my back.

3. How have your strengths helped you succeed? How have your faults hindered you?

Not sure how to answer this so I'll leave it alone.

4. If you found a remote that could rewind, fast forward, stop and start time, what would you do with it?

I would rewind my life, and knowing what I know now, I would do things differently.

5. Any special plans for the Memorial Day weekend? Will you in some way honor or recognize the meaning of this day (remembering people who died in service to their country)? Have you ever been to Arlington National Cemetery? Does your town do anything special to mark the day?

I have never been to Arlington National Cemetary. Our town has a Veterans Memorial Park where they usually do something. However, hubby is on call so we probably won't do anything this year.

`The Wedding Quilt Bride` is a Love Inspired inspirational romance book by author Marta Perry. The heroine, Rebecca Mast, returns to her childhood home after the death of her husband leaving her a widow with a 6-year-old son, Elijah.

Rebecca refuses to give up her independence, not wanting charity or someone working for her with no pay. She was depending on the sale of her farm, to her brother-in-law, to keep her afloat and able to pay her bills. All was going well until she receives a letter stating her brother-in-law couldn't pay the first month's payment.

The hero, Daniel King, blames himself that his younger brother left the Amish community and is living as an Englisher. After finding out his brother is alive and well Daniel wants to go find him and bring him back home. The lesson learned here is, "We can't keep people from following their own paths, no matter how much we love them." (pg# 81)

A quote I like is found on pages 151-152. It says, "Don't worry about tomorrow. Just do what God puts in front of you right now and leave the rest to Him."

I thought this was a well-written book, just long enough to tell the story.

`My Father's Business` is a first-hand account of author Cal Turner, Jr., Cal Turner, Sr. and Luther Turner by former CEO of Dollar General, Cal Turner, Jr. It's about Cal's journey of self-discovery and by sharing what he has learned he can teach readers how to flourish and work together for the good of organizations, communities, and our world.

Cal's grandfather, Luther Turner, became a dedicated student of life with only a third-grade education. He valued other people's information, insight, and perspective. He opened their first store, Turner's Bargain Store with a third-grade education and a monthly income of just $225. Cal, Sr. went to Vanderbilt University with only an eighth-grade education. This shows the dedication of the family.

When Cal, Sr. sold his wares for only $1 he was told it would never work. So he started with the store that had already failed as a Junior Department store in Springfield, Kentucky. The second store to sell everything for $1 was in Memphis. With hundreds of customers lining up to come in when the store opened its doors the Memphis store sold $1.1 million in the first few months. With this new concept of selling merchandise for $1, the stores' names were changed to Dollar General.

When Cal, Jr. began working for his dad his job was to unload the trucks and stock the stores. When he began opening stores hundreds of people would stand outside the door waiting for it to open. It took them four days from beginning to end to ready a store for customers. They would hire people that came in from the streets.

One night when Cal, Jr. was eleven-years-old the song `The Old Rugged Cross` entered his mind and he became a Christian at that moment. It was not so much about religion as it was a relationship with Jesus. As an aside, he became a Methodist because that's what his mom was. He felt a calling to a true ministry to a hurting world instead of an institutional ministry.

I liked this book and the intriguing information about Cal, Jr. and his family. It was interesting to see inside of maintaining a store(s). I recommend this book to an Economics student, entrepreneurs, or anyone interested in retail stores.

Review: CSB The Study Bible for Women

`The Study Bible for Women` has articles that help a woman understand Biblical womanhood. There are lots of tools for the woman of the Word. There are over 500 word studies, footnotes, 25 color-full maps, answers to the hard questions (ex. Is it ever right to take revenge?), timelines, and more. I like that there are two attached ribbons to easily flip from one piece of scripture to another without losing your place.

This durable Bible would make a great gift for a young bride because there is a place to write the family tree for the wife and the husband, The Ketubah marriage contract with a place for the bride to record her own Ketubah contract, a place to write family milestones with date/location and description, plus a place to write names of her spiritual mothers, along with their spiritual gifts, and scripture passage.

I think one of the best features is the character profiles, listed in alphabetical order. Ex. Abigail: An Intelligent Beauty, Anna: A Prophetess; and a whole list of others. I read Song of Songs as my introduction to this Bible. I found it easy to read and I like that it tells you who is speaking whether man or woman.

The only thing in his room was a t.v., a coffeemaker, and a clock. Where was he? Where had he been for eight months? After the eight months of missing, he woke up at The Willows Lodge, Woodinville, WA.

He was a defensive end at the University of Washington before they let him go because of his temper. Now he was no longer a teammate, his family had started a new life and they didn't want him back. His temper started when he was growing up with an abusive father. One day things changed and he was no longer living a Jekyll and Hyde lifestyle.

At least Toren thought he had conquered his evil self, but it was a very real struggle. He didn't want to be evil but the evil side felt strong. What was he to do? This is a Jekyll and Hyde type story where a person has a good side and a bad side and whichever side is fed is the one that wins.

One truth the reader can glean from this story is to take life moment by moment. Don't live for the past, or the future but live for today. Our infinite God loves us more than we can imagine.

I learned that when the prodigal son came home the father never mentioned his sin. He doesn't even say, "I forgive you." What he does is even greater than that. The father's response was to call for his ring to be put on his son`s finger. His shout is for his robe to be brought and put on his son's shoulders. His cry is for the prized calf to be killed for a feast. The celebration of his son's homecoming. Toren learned that`s how Father God's love is for him. There is no condemnation! Just love! He is waiting for his lost child to come home.

This story reminded me of Pilgrim's Progress. In the end, Toren had to decide which mountain he wanted to climb. Which mountain he wanted most.

Worship ministry UPPERROOM independently releases its third recording, Moments, May 18 with global distribution for the first time through The Fuel Music. This new five-song digital album is a collection of songs curated out of the ministry’s Prayer Room that has since gone on to inspire not only the members of UPPERROOM, the church in Dallas’ creative Design District that started in 2010 but millions more around the globe.

Called to gather the Lord’s people daily for corporate worship, praise, thanksgiving, adoration, and intercession through song and scripture, UPPERROOM opened its doors without much fanfare. Today, people around the globe are singing their songs and around 100 vocalists, songwriters and musicians contribute their talents to leading people in worship three times a day, six days a week.

“The power really comes from the Prayer Room,” shares Meredith Mauldin who leads UPPERROOM’s songwriting efforts, including a writing intensive once every three months where UPPERROOM’s songwriters are gathered in one place to expand melodies and lyrics, often spontaneously birthed in worship. “Basically, what we’re doing is stewarding the songs that we’re getting in the Prayer Room.”

Although UPPERROOM has been leading people in worship and prayer for eight years, it was only recently that they began to release their music to the culture at large. Much like dripping medicine from an IV, they slowly began to quietly drip organic moments from their worship sets on YouTube.

“We have a unique worship culture. One of those viral videos propelled a song Elyssa Smith wrote to new heights, and all around the world, in an unexpected fashion. Elyssa leads worship at the church’s second location, UPPERROOM Denver, and during a set with her brother and one of the Prayer Room directors, she spontaneously began singing what would become the chorus to “Surrounded (Fight My Battles)”: “This is how I fight my battles. It may look like I’m surrounded, but I’m surrounded by You.”

Multiple Grammy Award-winning Michael W. Smith heard the song after his producer discovered it on YouTube and decided to record it as the title track for his 2018 live worship album. Shortly after its release, he performed the song live on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

“We didn’t really do anything; and the Lord, He’s just breathing on it,” Smith says of the song that bears her name. “We’re just so humbled by the whole thing.”

“I think the title of the album is really indicative of the heart behind the project, which are these moments of a community that’s living this lifestyle around the presence of Jesus,” shares Miller. “We really are just capturing moments from our community that we feel like the Lord is highlighting.”

I love the layout and structure of this durable navy leather touch CSB Worldview Study Bible. The Scripture font is large enough to see without eye strain, this also includes the footnotes. The Bible opens flat so it's easier to keep your page open and there are two attached ribbons to hold your place.

This study Bible has many essays which include such topics as `What is a Christian Worldview and Why Does It Matter?`, `A Biblical View of Music`, and `Do My Beliefs Fit a Christian worldview?` There is also a comprehensive, easy to use, concordance at the back of the Bible, along with several colorful maps. The tools at the beginning of each Bible book are very helpful in understanding that book. They tell the circumstances of writing that book, how that book contributes to the Bible and the structure of that book. Those tools also list how the book fits in with a Christian worldview (teachings about God, teachings about humanity and teachings about salvation).

This Bible would make a great gift for a student of the Word. However, I would like to see the title change from Worldview Study Bible to Christian Worldview Study Bible. I almost decided not to review this Bible because of the title.

1. What would you say is your biggest day to day challenge?

My biggest day to day challenge is keeping enough towels washed for a houseful of guys.

2. May 16th is National Biographers Day. What's a biography you really enjoyed reading? Is this a genre you read regularly?

I am drawing a blank on biography. I would usually read an autobiography. In that case, I would say the one that still sticks with me is: `Halo Found Hope` the memoir of Helo Matzelle

3. How important is keeping a clean house? Do you need to de-clutter your life?

I think a clean house is important when we're talking about clean floors, clean bathrooms, and clean clothes. When we are talking about clutter that is a matter of someone's perspective.

4. You're the 8th dwarf. What's your name?

That out of all my mom's kids I was the one who moved the furthermost away. I can remember telling my mom that I would never move far away. At present, I have lived in 4 different southeast states.

Review: Be Still, My Heart

`Be Still, My Heart` is a set of (7) contemporary Christian romances. I will be reviewing 2 of the romances. `All in Good Time` by author Diana Lesire Brandmeyer and `The Inn at Cherry Blossom Lane` by author Jennifer Vander Klipp.

` All in Good Time` is a story about a grandmother, Sandra, whose husband is a POW and declared deceased after missing for many years. Kevin is Sandra's first love and he is back in town for their class reunion. Sandra's granddaughter, Lucy, will be moving in with her. This is a story about love and the reader will want tissues close by.

`The Inn at Cherry Blossom Lane` is a short story about a hidden room and a diary written by a once-famous actress. I was pleasantly surprised at the brief mention of an author friend of mine, Liz Tolsma.
Claire, the heroine, trusted the hero, Alex, enough to make herself vulnerable with him, but did she trust him enough to love him? Claire learns that ultimately God is in control.

I give this book 4* out of 5* only because I wish they were longer and meatier. I would like to see these books rewritten as stand-alone books.

Review: Cornerstones

`Cornerstones ~ 200 Questions and Answers to Learn Truth` by B&H Kids, a division of Lifeway. This beautiful hardback book is great for kids of all ages and includes a parent connection section to involve the whole family.

The text is organized in brief questions, one or two per page, with thoughtful answers. This organization is great for even the youngest child. Parents can ask the questions while in the car, at the park, almost anywhere to help the child have a biblical worldview, no matter where they are. It's also helpful if the children ask the questions of an older child or an adult.

I love the dazzling pictures throughout the book, they are drawings which have brilliant color. There are (7) chapters that focus on one theme each and each chapter is color-coded. The themes are God, Creation, Jesus, Salvation, The Bible, Discipleship, and The Church and Last Things. Last Things speaks of Jesus return. There is also a ribbon attached to the book to help hold the reader's place, as well as Scripture verses dispersed throughout the book.

This book would make a great Christmas or Easter gift.

There is also a special parent guide that can be bought separately to go along with `Cornerstones`

Review: How To Be A Perfect Christian

`How To Be A Perfect Christian` is labeled as a humorous book by The Babylon Bee. I read the first chapter and wasn't laughing. I wanted to cry as it seemed to put Christians down instead of build them up. When I decided to review this book I thought it would be light-hearted and not heavy laden.
It's true Christians aren't perfect and we all try to put Christianity in our own little box of what it looks like. Personally, I find this book to be a waste of my time.

The hardback cover is well made and I even like the cover photo. But, I was surprised this book came from a Christian publisher. I knew by the title the book would be tongue and cheek, but it actually seems to put down all Christians. I felt ill at ease after reading the first chapter and didn't read anymore.

I would not give this book to a young Christian or a Seeker. I will not recommend it. I am giving this book 2* because I like the cover.

`Redeeming Ruth` is a Christian living/Inspirational book on relationships by author Meadow Rue Merrill. This is a true story of one family's decision to adopt, what they went through to adopt, and the amazing love of God.

Ruth is a young orphan from Uganda, she was abandoned shortly after birth, she has a devastating diagnosis, and is visiting a family in North America. If she goes back to Uganda as an orphan with physical problems she has a high chance of dying. If she stays in America she has a higher rate of survival. But the odds are against her. Who will want to adopt an African child with Cerebral Palsy and other problems?

Meadow and her family decide they want to adopt her but they had to go through several channels for the adoption to go through. Meadow and Ruth had to fly to Uganda to stand before the deciding judge, Ruth needed her Visa and a physical within one month's time while in Uganda.

Before they went to Uganda they went through several snags here in America. Ruth needed her British Transit Visa. Even though this is a big book and the reader may be inclined to think Meadow and Ruth had plenty of time they were really on limited time from the family's decision to adopt and for the adoption to be finalized. Meadow went through a very difficult time while adopting Ruth. The reader learns how God is in control whether the problem is minute or huge.

A favorite quote from the book is on page 89. It reads, `Let my heart be broken by the things that break the heart of God.`(Bob Pierce ~ World Vision)

I recommend this book to readers who are thinking about adopting, and fans of inspirational books.
This would also make a great book club choice because of the Reader's Guide at the back of the book.

Anne, thank you for taking time out of your much busy schedule to answer an interview.

(1) What is the easiest thing about writing?

I don’t think any part of writing is easy. But once I write the first draft, I really enjoy going back to polish my story. I get to work with words, add humor or suspense or emotion, and submit my writing to beta readers who often give extremely encouraging feedback. Writers need to hear from readers about how their books touched readers and perhaps even changed their lives.

(2) Please tell our readers what is up next for you.

I’m presently writing a novella with the working title, Texas Law, which may or may not be changed. This novella will be part of The Pinkerton Detective collection which will release in early June. It’s set on a ranch in Texas near San Antonio. Stagecoach bandits rob the heroine, Cat Divine, of the ranch’s mortgage money. The disfigured desperado promises Cat he will return and kidnap her as his woman. Her father hires a Pinkerton Detective to track the money and protect his daughter.

(3) What kind of research was required for your book `Her Reluctant Hero`?

Her Reluctant Hero often takes place in the skies between Dallas and Tampa. I live in the Dallas area and have lived in Tampa, so the research there is from past or present observation. Josh Langford, the hero is a Viet Nam combat pilot. Josh’s exploits are taken from real life stories related by family members. Josh’s life as fireman and reporter are also taken from life experiences. Laura Richards, the stewardess’ work, hairstyles, clothing etc. are also gleaned from family memories. So, all research on that book is taken from real life.

(4) Describe your main characters in one sentence each and tell us who you would cast in their roles if Hollywood wanted to produce `Her Reluctant Hero` as a movie.

Laura is a small-town girl out in the big world striving to find herself, heal a broken heart, and become independent. Josh survives unbelievable odds and returns from the war with one desire—to marry the girl he left behind—but jilted. Jennifer Lawrence as Laura Richards and Ryan Reynolds as Josh Langford.

(5) Favorite quote:

“You were right, but you didn’t have to break up with me to prove it.”

(6) What energizes you and what wears you out?

Parties. They energize me because I love being with people. And Parties because I’m actually an introvert.

(7) How do you strive to bring God glory in every situation?

I’m not sure that I do strive to bring glory to God in every situation. But I do try to find His will and obey what He tells me. I’m still a sinner saved by God’s grace and trust Him that I bring glory to Him with my writing. I try to allow the Holy Spirit to grow the gifts of the spirit within me with His love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness and goodness.

(8) Just for fun, beach or mountains?

Just for fun, I like to hike in the woods, but not necessarily the mountains. I love the outdoors and prefer sailing on a boat to sunning on a beach. I love to take long walks, then sit in a comfy spot and read a good book. Usually, my reading consists of research.

(9) What is your most favorite book of all time?

Of course, my favorite book that I read almost every day is the Bible. Another great favorite is any book I’m currently working on as well as any book I’ve written. Sorry, I am rather biased.

(10) What is the message you hope readers will leave with after reading `Her Reluctant Hero`?

Luke 19:10: The Son of Man has come to seek and save that which was lost. Though the verse primarily speaks of salvation, the meaning extends to a life lived or Him rescued from one that hasn’t been.

I like how you are able to take real-life happenings and make them a part of your writing. I believe when an author can do that the reader becomes so much more involved in the storyline. In the book, we see that God's love for us is not dependent on us. His love is steadfast, He does not waver. I believe the author wrote this book to the church as a whole. Lisa says, `For too long we have been known for what we are against rather than what and even whom (Jesus) we are for` Charles Spurgeon wrote, ` We are bound to love our enemies, but we are not bound to love God's enemies.` (see page# 131)

At the back of the book, Lisa has a whole section devoted to lessons from Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. Some of the lesson topics are `Words can refresh and restore life or hide what it takes`, `The mouth of a fool gets him in trouble`, `The truth will always outlive a lie`, etc.

I recommend this book to all women who may be searching for something more.

I like most everything I ate as a child. However, there are things I will eat now that I wouldn't eat as a child. I am learning to actually like yogurt. But I don't think I'll ever like coffee.

I like to think I am in control. ha! I am learning to give God the control even if I don't like the way things are going.

`Her Reluctant Hero` is a short historical romance paperback book by author Anne Greene. The year is 1968, Laura Richards is in a plane somewhere between Dallas and Tampa. Seven years earlier her family home burnt to the ground. That was when Laura met Joshua Langford, he rescued her from that fire. He was her hero. After dating a few years he asked Laura to marry him. However, in 1965 her life turned upside-down. She thought she had seen the end of Joshua.

In 1968 Laura unexpectedly sees Joshua on the plane where she is a stewardess. During Joshua's tours in the military, he wrote her weekly without ever hearing from her. Now his job as a reporter has him do a report on the same airlines Laura is on. He always made sure Laura was scheduled on the same plane and same time as himself. Josh had made a mistake that cost him his friendship with Laura, now he wants her back.

As the stewardesses were getting dressed for the job I had to laugh as I remembered the beehive hairdo with tons of hairspray of the 60's, which were mentioned in this book. As well as the Go-Go boots.

Melanie, another stewardess on the same plane, was a bit of a flirt with the men on the plane and that's just the way Eastway Airlines wanted their stewardesses. They were advertised to be lovely ladies and the airplanes were advertised as a bachelor pad in the sky. I felt a bit uncomfortable with this, but am glad I read to the very end.

`365 Trivia Twist Devotions` is a huge paperback book for pre-teens through older teens and adults by B&H Kids. a division of Lifeway. I love the cover which gives a vivid explanation of what the reader will find inside. A book full of fun facts and spiritual truths for every day of the year. Each devotions page lists a Scripture verse, an `Also on This Day` fun fact, and the devotion of the day. The devotion begins with a fun fact then matches it with Scripture. Example, on March 31, 1889, the Eiffel Tower opened. According to the devotion the Eiffel Tower was built to show man's achievements. But, that wasn't the first structure built to honor their own achievements. The first structure was the Tower of Babel.

The text of this book is written about 5-6 short paragraphs per page, one page per devotion. This organization is ample for this age group. Each devotion is stand-alone and usually relates to what happened on that day in history. The primary medium is drawings drawn on every page.

I am very excited about this book and look forward to reading it with my husband. I recommend this book to pre-teens, teens, adults, and any reader interested in trivia. What a fun way to have devotions as a family or alone. I give this book 5* out of 5*
