My career prior to motherhood was a photo-lithographer. I was one of the first female apprentices in the Government Print.

During the time I was at home with my children, I pursued my passion for cooking and attended courses at Wellington Polytechnic, which gave me the confidence to cook in restaurants and also run my own catering business.

Ten years ago I went back to the Open Polytechnic and qualified as a Real Estate agent, a position I still hold.

I am on the Board of the Zonta Club of Mana as fundraising convenor and I have represented the club on the selection panel for various 2nd chance education scholarships we support. I am also a volunteer for Women’s Refuge.

I am very interested in people from all walks of life and I believe this, accompanied by my mantra that ‘girls can do everything’ puts me in good stead as a Trustee for NHWT.

Along with her involvement with the New Horizons Trust for Women, Jo is also President of Zonta Club of Manawatu. Jo believes the Trust has a strong role in supporting education, innovation and research which benefits women.

2012 sees the celebration of 20 years of awards to women for second chance education and research from New Horizons for Women

The trustees are planning a celebratory dinner and invite you to put the date into your diary NOW:

Date: Friday 23 March 2012

Time: 6pm (For AGM) and 7.30pm (for dinner)

Where: Massey University, Wellington

We’ll send you a formal invitation in a few weeks with the detailed information. At this stage we expect the dinner to cost $70. Places are limited.

Please pass this message on to your friends and contacts in case we don’t have their email address.

Twenty years of raising money and providing monetary awards to women who aspire to reach their goals and new horizons. That’s quite a milestone that the New Horizons for Women Trust has reached!

However over time we’ve lost track of many of you and we’d like to keep you in touch with current events and hope you can join us next March. So please contact us to let us know where you are now. Even if you can’t make it in March 2012, then we can send you newsletters so you can see how the Trust has grown and what it has achieved over 20 years.

The award is made to a woman or group of women seeking more knowledge and skills, or developing an activity which will help them build a more peaceful world – at home, school, the workplace, or in the community.

Peace is broadly defined as – elimination of violence within families, lessening of conflict between groups within society, freedom from civil disorder, and cessation of war. It extends to activities which foster mediation or resolution of conflict by means other than violence.

Dunedin Playback Theatre Company receives the award for its project “Moving Forward”. This is a series of workshops the company will run in various locations using playback and socio-drama to raise awareness of the subtleties of family violence, and work to reduce the isolation of those affected by family violence.

The company consists of Sandra Turner, Cinnamon Boreham, Penny Warren, Glenda Wallace, Chrissy Hollamby, Karen Jacquard, Tui Cleary, Miriam Noonan and Faye Garman.
