The Institute of Medicine will convene an ad hoc committee to organize and plan a public workshop that will explore alternative cost-effective systems that would meet requirements for BioWatch as an automated detection system for aerosolized agents (alternatives to Generation 3). Systems identified need to be capable of being deployed by the Department of Homeland Security by 2018 and enable day-to-day environmental surveillance that would be of value to the public health and medical community.

Improving the Health, Safety and Well-Being of Young Adults

Young adults (aged approximately 18-26) are at a significant and pivotal time of life. They may seek higher education, launch their work lives, develop personal relationships, and pursue other endeavors that help set them on healthy and productive pathways that last through adulthood. However, research also shows that the transition to adulthood can be a time of increased vulnerability and risk, including, for example, concerns about unemployment and homelessness; lack of access to health care; mental health issues; and increased binge drinking, illicit drug use, and driving under the influence.

The workshop will feature invited presentations and discussions that will: Provide an overview of the scope and trends of current sources of financing for long-term services and supports for working-age individuals with disabilities and older adults aging into disability, including income supports and personal savings; Consider the role of families, business, and government in financing long-term services and supports; and, Discuss implications of and opportunities for current and innovative approaches.
