Valentine's Day is a festival that cherishes love and romance. The festival falls on February 14 every year and is celebrated in several countries across the world including US, UK, Canada, Japan, France, China and India. Though the festival commemorates the martyrdom of a Christian saint called St Valentine, the festival as it is celebrated today has little religious significance. In present times, Valentine's Day has assumed a secular and global flavor and is celebrated by people of all ages and races.

As we all know eBay is the place for buying almost anything imaginable. However there are things that we must watch out for if we intend buying on eBay. Never forget the rule caveat emptor, or buyer beware. As in all facets of life this rule rings true and even more so on eBay. There are steps you must take to be sure that you know what you are buying, do that and you will really get a great deal on an iPhone. On the other hand if you are not careful you can have great disappointment and lose your money. So listen up and take notes.

Firstly, know exactly what you are buying and if you don't know, ask the seller. They are obliged to answer your questions. Watch out for conflicting information between the title and the extended description. As an example there was a listing for an unlocked 16 GB iPhone, at least that was what the title said. In the description it said that, and it was clearly stated the phone is locked, then they stated that they are using it with a carrier other than AT&T so it clearly must have been unlocked. You could ask the seller for clarification of the issue, but my reaction would be to look for another phone.

Do you know the difference between unlocked and locked? We will give you a brief rundown here. If the phone is unlocked, it means the firmware has been hacked and now you can insert any chip that will work on your chosen mobile network. Different countries have different carriers so you should find out what is available to you and what services they are offering. Some features of the phone can be lost if you go away from Apples recommended carriers. Where your iPhone will work has nothing to do with the chip but with wiring of the phone and the radio frequencies of the carriers.

The terms "unlocked" and "new, unopened box" are incompatible. You have to open up the box and hack into the firmware in order to unlock the iPhone. Apple does not ship unlocked iPhones. In order to hack into the iPhone you must open the box, and hook the iPhone up to a computer. This is hardly unopened. Locked means that the firmware that Apple shipped the phone with is intact and untouched. These phones will only activate and work on the AT&T network. However, a locked phone has no issues or troubles with any firmware upgrades whereas an unlocked phone must be careful when updating to be sure they do not re-lock the iPhone.

Three very important words to look out for when purchasing anything on eBay are, refurbished, new and used. If an instrument has been refurbished, hopefully by the manufacturer, it has been take from not performing the way it should to an as new state. Find one of these and you should get a decent phone at a realistic price. If the seller is for real he will declare what the phone is, either new or refurbished, but watch for those les scrupulous sellers that may not disclose this fact. As always if you're not sure ask. If in doubt shop elsewhere.

There are many phones that are similar in appearance to the iPhone, but clearly are not. There is only one iPhone. You will see phones called A88 iPhone, PDA, cell phone. This is not an iphone but a look alike. Make sure that any phone you are considering as an iPhone is the Apple brand.

Very important when buying on eBay, make sure that you know the sellers return policies and only pay through PayPal using your credit card. Some will ask you to pay direct to their account.. I never do that, I go somewhere else. Never ever pay with cash or checks or wire transfers or money orders. No, no, no, just don't do it. Stick with Pay Pal and if a dispute arises you have recourse through that company. Sorry if that sounds like a plug for Pay Pal, but we are opening ourselves up to the scammers of the world when we shop on eBay and I have found not safer way. So if you find a seller who does not take credit cards or Pay Pal then I would be most suspicious. Remembered "caveat emptor" and go somewhere else to buy.

eBay tries their hardest to make it safe for you to shop, but you must do your part by educating yourself and giving yourself the best chance of getting a good deal.

Before you buy an iPhone on eBay do your due diligence and research what you want and don't be disappointed.

Coke Dabbles in iPhone Apps

Coca-Cola has launched “Spin the Coke”—a new application for iPhone users.

The brand describes the game as a way to “break the ice or to give that someone special a not so subtle hint.” The application can be downloaded at the iTunes store for FREE.

"Coke is about bringing people together," said Freddie Laker, director of digital strategy at Sapient, the Coke roster shop that created the app. "It is about youth culture, and sitting around playing spin the bottle epitomizes that."

It joins another free application Coke created for the iPhone. The Magic Coke Bottle app is a twist on the Magic Eight Ball. Users can shake their iPhone's Coke bottle image to get answers to life's burning questions. Players can choose from five backgrounds and two themes, with each background having different music. They can also customize the bottle between the classic Coke and the modern version.

Coke joins several big name brands like Target and Nike looking to connect with users through the popular Apple phone. Some are emphasizing utility, others whimsy. The goals are the same: get users to bring their brands onto their phones and with them at all times.

Nike has gone the utility route with a recently released application for Nike Training Club, its third and most advanced iPhone app. The app, developed by digital agency R/GA, lets users design workout plans from videos on NikeWomen.com, which are then transferred to the iPhone. The idea is for women to have a customized workout plan, which is combined with a calendar function. Users get points for completing workouts, part of an effort to motivate them to continue.

A challenge for brand applications is they compete with many other similar offerings from developers. Brands, including Coke and Nike, have a spotty track record on Facebook creating applications with much staying power.

Spin the Coke, for instance, is just one of several spin the bottle applications available in the iTunes store. The Magic Coke Bottle, likewise, competes with other Magic Eight Ball-type applications. Apple has approved an estimated 16,000 applications for the iPhone.

"It's gotten to the point now that you actually have to put something out that can cut through the clutter and it has to be promoted properly," said Laker.

Coke will promote the application on its own properties and via blogger outreach, he said, with the goal being to reach the list of the top 25 free apps for the iPhone.

It has been revealed that yellowsn0w (the popular iPhone unlock tool) has reached version 0.9.8, being capable of unlocking even iPhone 3Gs under firmware 2.2.1. While not announced on the iPhone Dev Team's blog yet, the makers of the tool tweeted the news just hours ago.

The iPhone Dev Team's post reads, “iphone_dev: yellowsn0w 0.9.8 is on Cydia for those who were seeing wifi or slowness issues with 0.9.7. This is NOT anything related to 02.30.03 baseband.”

At least one user confirms that “the Wi-Fi issue is gone on [his] UK O2 prepaid 3g 16gig running an O2 Germany and Swisscom SIM.” The post ends with a sincere “thanks” going out to the iPhone Dev Team.

An extended description of the update, as posted over at the hackint0sh forums, goes a bit like this:

“The 0.9.6 version worked for many but it had a hard-coded address for the airplane mode call. The hard-coded address changes depending on FW version (2.2 vs 2.2.1 so far). The 0.9.7 version tried to make it universal and applicable across all future updates. Although it worked for most people, it did have the side effect of keeping wi-fi off after the toggle. The 0.9.8 version fixes that at the expense of going back to hard-coded addresses. That affects us more than you.”

The release of yellown0w, scheduled for New Year’s Eve, was postponed a day due to a small problem and finally, it has been released into the wild.

Yellowsn0w is the first working iPhone 3G unlock program that doesn’t need any tampering with your SIM card. In fact, you won’t notice any difference in your iPhone’s operation, except of course that your 3rd-party SIM now works after installing.

Yellowsn0w can be installed using both Windows and Mac systems, and easily uninstalled using Cydia, iTunes or the good old Command Line

According to the DevTeam, v0.9.6 of Yellowsn0w should “should fix EVEN MORE problems,” although they did not go into specifics of this release. So if the previous versions of this unlock hack did not work for you, try this one out…. or wait for the final v1.0 to come out, which probably should not take too long to arrive judging by how fast new versions are coming out.

As before, Yellowsn0w is available via Installer.app/Cydia at the following repositories: http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com (Cydia) or http://i.yellowsn0w.com (Installer.app).

And, of course, prior to being able to use it, you will need to

upgrade your iPhone 3G to the latest iPhone firmware version (v2.2) from Apple and then use QuickPwn to activate and jailbreak the device.

Installation instructions and additional notes are below…

To use it:
1. Install BossPrefs and Yellowsn0w from Cydia/Installer
2. Disable everything in BossPrefs
3. Reboot your iPhone using BossPrefs
4. Wait for the iPhone to boot up
5. Take out your SIM card and reinsert it back in
6. Wait a moment or two
7. In settings turn on Airplane mode
8. Turn off Airplane mode
9. All done!

Additional notes:
- As of v 0.9.4 there’s no longer a one-minute delay step. If you don’t see your carrier when your homescreen comes up, you may still need a SIM reinsert (for now).
- If you are in the U.S. and are trying this with T-Mobile, you must turn off the 3G switch in Settings.
- No PIN support yet
- The unlock will silently quit on anything other than baseband 02.28.00. It detects the wrong version and just quits to avoid any damage. Please double check your Modem Firmware setting in Settings->General->About.

There are a couple of flight sim games for the iPhone, however, according to SnakeHead Software, their game Flying Aces is the first true dogfight flight sim for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

The game puts you in control of an F-15 Eagle flying over the Persian Gulf and uses accelerometer controls to give you a more realistic flight experience. There will also be a ranking systems for players to compete against one another. The more A.I.-controlled enemy fighters you shoot down, the higher your rank will be.

This version of the game will be available on the App Store sometime in November for $7.99. SnakeHead Software is planning to release a multiplayer version of the game sometime in the future. At that point, the game will be priced at $9.99. According to the company, users that purchased the first version of the game will "most likely" be able to get the upgrade for free.

The app, released by Azure Talon Software, is a jokes database that pulls content from online sources. The end result is a new joke every time you open the app, or hit the easy-to-spot refresh button in the upper right-hand corner of the iPhone’s screen. Only one server is currently available to draw content from, but the developer promises at least two new sources in future updates.

Part of iLaugh’s appeal is its simplicity and ease of use. The app has a grand total of two screens, the first being the main display and the other being a source selection screen. The main screen consists of a top bar with the App’s name and the refresh button, while the bulk of the display is taken up by the content window, which shows the jokes. There is no bottom menu bar, just a small “i” button which flips the screen, taking you to the server selection page. Graphics and palette choices show a keen eye for design, making the app a pleasure to use and the content easy to read.

Few days ago,Dev Team are that much closer to unlocking the iPhone 3G.
Apparently this fails the "integrity check" but still keeps running anyway. I call that progress!

The Dev Team notes the ability to modify the baseband is useful but they are unsure as to how close they are to unlocking for real.

Tencent Releases QQ Version For iPhone

Tencent (0700.HK) released a WiFi version of its instant messaging (IM) tool QQ for Apple's (Nasdaq: APPL) iPhone and began offering free downloads of the version in the Apple iTunes Store on Monday, reports CnBeta. QQ formerly only supported GSM, and users must download iTunes before installing the QQ software, said the report.

There have couple of new features buried within the iPhone 2.2 beta. Apple has apparently made underlying changes to the iPhone's frameworks that are not yet exposed to the end user. These findings include:

- Support for Japanese emoji icons - a popular feature for Japanese phones. The lack of emoji support has been blamed as part of the reason for slow iPhone adoption in Japan.
- Support for Google Street View for the Google Maps application. Street View allows users to view panoramic street level photographs in select cities within the Google Maps application. The feature was recently demoed on Google's Android phone.

Finally, Apple has also addressed one common request within the iPhone's Keyboard settings, allowing users to disable the iPhone's auto-correction.

Adobe’s senior director of engineering told attendees at the company’s Flash on the Beach conference in Brighton, England on Tuesday that Adobe is working on a version of the Flash Player for the iPhone.

Aside from the seemingly perpetual lack of copy/paste, MMS, and video recording on Apple’s iPhone, support for Flash content is another important and yet missing feature.

Mobile Safari may be the most advanced mobile web browser ever created to date, but its lack of support for Flash, even if the built-in YouTube player makes up for it a bit, somehow drags it down.

Adobe has been committed to bringing Flash to the iPhone for some time. But since Apple has the ultimate say on whether or not to allow the Flash Player on the iPhone, and Apple CEO Steve Jobs told shareholders earlier this year that he didn't think the current player is good enough for the iPhone, the situation is still up in the air. But Betlem added that once Apple gives its approval, Adobe will have the player ready in a very short time.

Flash support is one of the major features still missing from the iPhone. Without it, users are unable to completely recreate the desktop Web experience on an iPhone.

If you are a software developer and publisher for the iPhone, you will now be allowed to discuss the process of creating the programs for the handset. This means that a number of people will now be able to launch their books describing how the process works

Apple explained its decision stating: "The NDA has created too much of a burden on developers, authors and others interested in helping further the iPhone's success."

The NDA made life difficult for iPhone conference planners, who had to limit topics of discussion, and publishers, who had to delay their iPhone books. Some developers paid each other a dollar so they could say they were subcontractors and therefore permitted to discuss iPhone software.

With Google's launch of its Android powered mobile phone, T-Mobile's G1, Apple may have to try harder to keep iPhone developers happy or risk seeing them switch allegiance to the Google Android platform development community. Google offers through Android an open-source mobile operating system and allows developers to freely develop, distribute and collaborate on applications they code.

Thousands of programmers were affected by this policy.They were not able to talk to the press, or write in trade journals. Not even among themselves - and this was a major barrier for them to progress faster and share programming techniques or collaborate with other developers.

Apple had maintained the NDA was in place to help maintain Apple's competitive edge by keeping mobile rivals in the dark about application development and Apple's iPhone app approval process.
