Did you know that the Seamen's Church Institute serves over 60,000 seafarers, truckers, port workers, and visitors at its International Seafarers' Center in Port Newark each year? As an agency of the Episcopal Church, SCI has been tending to the needs of this important community for 175 years. Through its ministries of chaplaincy, education, advocacy, and its volunteer knitting program, SCI supports the maritime community. Funding for these vital programs comes from many sources, including our special events and community outreach grants.

We hope you will support SCI and join us Monday, May 4, 2009, for a special golf outing that will help raise money for the Institute and the Port Newark International Seafarers' Center, currently under major renovation. Details of the Golf Tournament in Maplewood, NJ are below.

Country Clubs Fight an Exodus according to the Wall Street Journal: ...a study of private clubs by the National Golf Foundation, released last spring, determined that 10% to 15% of clubs are in financial distress. At these clubs, memberships are down 29% from their peaks (whenever that was for each club), rounds are down 22%, and 57% are operating at a loss. "When guys from the industry sit around talking, the word is that something like 20% of private clubs won't be here in five years," said Dana Garmany, the chairman and chief executive of Troon Golf, the country's largest manager of golf courses, many of them private.

About our host, Ted Stampoulos, owner, Martini Bistro and Bar, Millburn, New Jersey
"I feel a special attachment to this organization. My sister Roseanne suffered from a brain tumor and is now an eight year survivor. Over 1.4 million people each year sustain a traumatic brain injury; 80,000 in the metropolitan area. After a brain injury, individuals face many obstacles while trying to return to life in their community. Opportunity Project helps individuals meet and overcome many of those challenges."

Fundraisers like this enable Opportunity Project to provide services to people who may have no financial resources. No one is turned away due to lack of funds.â

About Opportunity Project, Inc.
Founded in 1993 by people with brain injuries and their families whose mission is to bridge the gap between medical services and offer vocational and social support systems to help our members rebuild and maintain satisfying lives. Membership is open to anyone over 18 with a brain injury regardless of their ability to pay.

Opportunity Project, Inc. maintains a 14,000 square foot facility that houses the organizations administrative offices, library, lounge, conference area, kitchen facilities and computer work stations. A work oriented Clubhouse environment is provided where our members can through their work, build vocational skills, self-esteem and confidence in their ability to accomplish productive activities. Through the Clubhouse facilities members receive information about benefits, transportation, and education and employment opportunities. The Clubhouse is not a traditional rehabilitation facility because it is set up around a work day rather than treatment groups or therapy.

<img src="/gimbellogo.gif" alt="Gimbellogo" align="right" border="2" height="110" hspace="4" vspace="4" width="110" /">The MS Center at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, NJ announces its 11th Annual Charity Golf Invitational will take place on Monday, September 15, 2008 at Knickerbocker Country Club in Tenafly, NJ. The Center’s National Spokesperson, Pro Golfer Brett Massingham will once again serve as the Outing’s Honorary Chairperson. Mr. Massingham, who has multiple sclerosis, gained national attention when he qualified for and played in the PGA tour’s Los Angeles-Nissan Open in 2002, becoming the only person ever with MS to compete in a PGA Tour event.

Mr. Massingham will offer a group golf clinic prior to the 12:30PM shotgun start, will play in the tournament and provide a special inspirational quality to the event. We are also thrilled to have Ms. Maggie Weder’s participation again this year! Maggie is an MS patient from North Carolina who is also an amateur golf champion and decorated armed forces officer. She traveled to New Jersey for our past 4 events and has become an instant family member of the MS Center!

The Annual Golf Outing has been a significant fund raising source for the MS Center in years past, and is even more important given the current fund raising climate.

“The demanding economic conditions and tightening reimbursement policies in the public and private sectors continues to place our Center in difficult financial circumstances. Our ability to provide comprehensive care to people with multiple sclerosis remains extremely challenging”, says Scott Guevin, Assistant Vice President of the Center. “Our annual outing has become a crucial contributor to our ability to operate as we have in the past.”

This event has drawn an increasing number of players and media attention over the past few years, particularly due to Mr. Massingham’s and Ms. Weder’s involvement. More and more corporate sponsors have chosen to become involved and gain positive exposure through the local media, health care and business community. Sponsorship and player opportunities are available for this event, but do fill quickly as the summer golf season progresses. The day will consist of a clinic with Brett, massages for all, Shotgun Start, our famous long drive contest with Maggie, a fabulous goodie bag which includes Footjoy Golf shoes for all, followed by cocktails, dinner, auction and awards.
