Casio Computer Co., Ltd. has unveiled a remarkable blend of technology and tradition with the release of the S100X-JC1-U, a limited-edition calculator that elevates everyday functionality into the realm of art. Launching on April 9th at a price of 99,000 yen, this exclusive model is limited to just 650 pieces worldwide. By integrating the refined beauty of Japanese lacquerware into its flagship S100 series, Casio has created an object that is as much about emotional value as it is about precision performance.

Each calculator is meticulously hand-finished by skilled artisans at Yamakyu Shikko, a long-established lacquerware maker rooted in tradition. Crafted in Sabae City, the body undergoes the intricate “tamenuri” technique—where translucent amber lacquer is layered over a red base to produce a deep, evolving reddish-brown hue. Using 100% natural lacquer derived from purified tree sap, every piece achieves a rich luster and dignified presence. The entire process, from lacquering to drying and final assembly at Yamagata Casio, takes over a month, ensuring that no two calculators are exactly alike.

Beneath its artisanal exterior lies the reliable engineering of the S100 series, the only calculators in Casio’s lineup still manufactured domestically in Japan. It features a low-reflection, high-contrast LCD with navy-blue characters inspired by fountain pen ink, offering exceptional readability in any lighting condition. Completing the experience is a thoughtfully designed package—a sturdy presentation box adorned with traditional gold motifs on a deep black background, finished with a gold foil-stamped Casio logo. The S100X-JC1-U is not merely a tool, but a celebration of craftsmanship, heritage, and timeless design.

Augment AI has unveiled the wena X, inherited from Sonny as the world’s smallest smartwatch, bringing a distinctly Japanese sense of minimalism and precision to the wearable space. The company will launch crowdfunding for the device on GREEN FUNDING starting at 11:00 AM on March 20, where early adopters can secure the wena X loop rubber edition at a special “super early bird” price of 46,800 yen ($295), limited to the first 500 units.

Early details suggest a compact AMOLED display embedded into the band, gesture controls, and a week-long battery life, all while remaining compatible with standard watch heads. Health tracking, notifications, and even NFC-based payments are integrated into the slim module, reinforcing its identity as a “hidden smartwatch” rather than a conventional wrist computer.

What makes the wena X particularly compelling is its cultural and design sensibility—it’s less about tech dominance and more about seamless living. In a market crowded with attention-grabbing devices, this understated wearable caters to users who value subtlety, craftsmanship, and practicality. If anything, the wena X signals a distinctly Japanese direction for wearable tech: smaller, smarter, and elegantly invisible.

South Korea is looking to develop a new kind of public transport – supposedly ‘train-like’ and capable of hitting an unbelievable 621 mph. Once developed, this super-fast train will travel inside a high-tech low-pressure tube at almost the speed of sound. This valiant initiative by South Korea is a stepping stone towards the country securing a well-deserved place among other countries contending in the ‘futuristic technology’ domain.

A state-run institute will collaborate with Hanyang University and other research groups to develop this new ground transport in the next three years. Once complete, this would help cover the journey from Seoul to Busan in flat 30 minutes, a sharp contrast to the current three-hour trip.
An official stated that this transport system will be based on ‘Hyper-tube technology’, a mode of passenger and freight transport that propels floating vehicles akin to pods, via tubes below a partial vacuum, at speeds up to 800 mph. This technology was first proposed by Elon Musk, Tesla Motors’ CEO.

These hyper-tubes are suspended off the ground to safeguard from earthquakes and other weather-related problems. Passengers can sit in individual or group pods, which would be accelerated with magnets. Tickets would be priced at approximately USD 20 each way, and the capsules housing around six to eight people would leave at half minute intervals. It has been estimated that building a line from LA to San Francisco would work out to around USD 16 billion. However, critics opine that it could cost close to USD 100 billion.

America-based Hyperloop (a proposed futuristic travel system that can possibly transport people at 740 mph between distant locations), took the lead last year by raising USD 80 million for development, and they are still working to make this futuristic mode of transport see the light of the day. If the development comes to fruition, it will be double the speed of the world’s current fastest ground transport – the magnetic levitation (Maglev) train, capable of attaining speeds up to 500 km per hour.

Although both are friction-free technologies, Maglev trains cannot compete with hyper-tube trains in terms of speed – Maglevs are slowed down by air resistance, while the latter moves in a vacuum and can hit speeds almost twice of that achievable by Maglevs.

Yves Béhar’s Fuseproject studio recently unveiled a line of responsive apparel, christened the Aura Powered Clothing collection, at London’s Design Museum’s New Old Exhibition. This exhibition is a unique platform wherein designers can explore and leverage diverse avenues/approaches to make a real difference in people’s routine experiences in later life. Aura Power Clothing (first prototype) is one of six projects that the Design Museum has commissioned for the New Old Exhibition.

Designed in collaboration with robotics company Superflex, the Aura Powered Clothing collection is no less than a miracle cure for the elderly having mobility issues. These special, ‘smart’ garments come embedded with “electric muscles” or pods, to help aged wearers walk, stand, and even climb stairs with considerable ease.

Made using lightweight and flexible fabric, Aura Powered Clothing aims to equip ageing people with higher strength levels. This is made possible through a series of motors contained in hexagonal pods, positioned at the legs, torso, back, and hips. All of them are embedded with sensors, and each of them leverage artificial intelligence to not only sync with the body’s natural movements, but also muscle power to help the wearer sit, get up, or stay upright.

In addition, the sensors and pods are functionally aligned with the wearer’s muscular composition. A band within the soft fabric sections get tight around certain body parts so as to offer appropriate lumbar support.

Fuseproject and Superflex’s choice of design, materials and color are a far cry from the typical clinic look and ‘sickroom aesthetic’ as they refer to it – They refuse to confirm to conventionalism, and are focused more on performance, comfort, looks, and even style.

It seems like Superflex has come up with the concept of Powered Clothing to use technology to empower people, especially the aged, to freely engage and interact physically, socially and emotionally with the world, and enhance their physical ability to help them live a more active life. Together with Fuseproject, they plan to continue developing this concept further. The duo envisions that their Aura Powered Clothing collection will sooner or later start being used by athletes and differently-abled individuals too.

Well, the Elago W3 is not only designed in a manner that makes it work perfectly with all Apple Watch series, but it also encases the smart wearable behind a facade that bears an uncanny resemblance to a vintage Macintosh classic.

The stand supports Nightstand Mode and works with either charger, however the latter does not form a part of the package. Adding to the Elago W3’s authenticity is a phony disk drive slot that the stand comes equipped with.

London-based social enterprise Uji recently came up with an innovative and highly durable wheelchair for the disabled inhabiting developing countries. Named SafariSeat, this all-terrain wheelchair happens to be Uji’s first project.

A social enterprise company having resolved to make a real, honest difference, Uji operates on open-source principles. Their chief philosophy and ultimate objective is to design tools to pull people out of the poverty web, and help the disabled live independent, dignified lives.

In cognisance of the fact that 1 person in every 200 people in East Africa requires a wheelchair and gets confined by his/her disability, designer Janna Deeble, a Kenyan citizen, returned to the country in 2015 after studying abroad, to develop this unique wheelchair. Deeble’s inspiration culminated into designing the brilliant SafariSeat after he met a Samburu man named Letu, disabled with polio since birth, permitting him only to crawl and making him completely dependent on others. Deeble noticed Letu’s lack of access to good healthcare, appropriate wheelchairs or any other critical medical assistance. Deeble further understood the depth of the situation when in his early years, he himself suffered an accident that left him wheelchair-bound for months.

What sets SafariSeat apart from regular wheelchairs is its use of a simple (patent pending) mechanism akin to a car suspension, which allows all the wheels to stay firmly on the ground at all times, rendering maximum stability. SafariSeat can easily move through rough terrain, offers enhanced biomechanical efficiency and is equipped with pump levers to move and control it – The top lever is for power, the bottom allows speed control. Further, there is only a mild pressure shift as one rides the wheelchair, and blood flow is stimulated too, significantly lowering risks of pressure damage and pressure sores.

In addition to making this special wheelchair a low cost and open-source solution, Deeble will also make SafariSeat’s blueprints absolutely free, which will function as part of an open source toolkit/manual enabling even the most basic workshops to manufacture these wheelchairs using bicycle parts, for use in the local community. Apart from assisting people with disabilities, this will also open up opportunities for sustainable employment. SafariSeat is easy to repair too.

After the initial launch of a £30,000 crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to develop SafariSeat last October, Uji has now successfully surpassed its original target by an impressive £16,000. These additional funds will be used to build more such wheelchairs, set up a higher number of workshops and a disability outreach programme to make SafariSeat accessible to people in East Africa’s remotest areas, says Deeble.
Janna Deeble hopes his brainchild will set several others free from their disabilities, just like Letu.

Game Boy – The very popular handheld gaming system by Nintendo, sunk into oblivion a little over 10 years ago, despite numerous updates and iterations made to it from time to time. And while there’s no word of Nintendo re-launching the much-loved portable console, another company named Retro-Bit is gearing up to end the Game Boy’s decade-long hibernation. Enter Super Retro Boy – pretty much a replica of the original Nintendo Game Boy. However, other than the conspicuous compact form factor, there really is no other similarity between the two handheld game buddies.

The Super Retro Boy will feature a scratch and shatter-resistant TFT HD display, and a powerful 2,500 mAh rechargeable battery will keep it charged for up to 10 hours. On its launch in North America in August 2017, Super Retro Boy is expected to cost USD 80.

The Super Retro Boy will retain all of the original Game Boy, including Game Boy Advance cartridges, Game Boy Advance titles and Game Boy Color. However, it also has an extra pair of buttons on the face, below the standard A and B set, which may probably make playing certain titles slightly more challenging on the Super Retro Boy. It is expected though that Game Boy fans won’t mind trading that challenge with having their prized (and almost extinct) Game Boy back again.

Norway has introduced a revolution in a very basic but essential activity – grocery shopping. Kolonial.no – the country’s biggest online grocery store, has started beta testing new self-driving vehicles, featuring the slogan “I am full of food from the internet”. The vehicle demo took place on November 11, 2016, in Baerum, Norway.

Kolonial.no came up with this ingenious initiative in collaboration with Acando, an IT consulting company. The world’s first self-driving grocery store is the outcome of their collective decision to try new technological possibilities in grocery delivery.

Marketing Manager of Acando, Marianne Sorby Rogeberg, revealed that the average price of each such self-driving vehicle would be approximately USD 240,000. In the initial stages, they would probably use around 30 vehicles, and this number would swell to 100 or more in course of the first operating year.

At a recent press conference, Co-Founder and CEO of Kolonial.no, Karl Munthe-Kaas, mentioned that “The idea is to use the already existing automatic and self-driving functions to deliver groceries in a simpler and cheaper way”. He added that these autonomous grocery delivery vehicles do not drive over 40 km per hour, are tested safe, and can easily stop wherever they are instructed to. Customers can either have their groceries delivered at their door step or pick them up at one of the 30 designated pick-up points. In addition, an online app will help customers track where exactly the autonomous vehicles are located, helping them figure out when and where they would prefer to have their groceries delivered/picked up.

The country opines that this clever initiative by Kolonial.no will not only ease grocery shopping management, but the plummeted distribution costs will get passed on to consumers, bringing about cost-effectiveness and saved time as well.

Munthe-Kaas called on the Norwegian Government to pass new regulations in order to facilitate these new innovations, at a gathering where Norway’s Transport and Communications Minister, Ketil Solvik-Olsen was present. Corroborating his complete support and approval, Solvik-Olsen termed this project “Revolutionary, driven by many smart people.” He also said that he would introduce a bill to approve projects like these next spring, anticipating the Government’s decision next summer.

The Chinese smartphone market has officially welcomed the latest Gionee M2017 – a metal-and-leather luxury smartphone packed with powerful specs, including 6 GB of RAM and a huge 7,000 mAh battery capacity. The chief USP of this impressive smartphone is its massive battery power, which has been achieved through two battery units of 3,500 mAh each. It is believed that Gionee has managed to marry the two batteries and have them intelligently communicate with one another, similar to how a portable battery pack takes ‘charge’ once the main battery drains out.

Design and Features
The 7,000 mAh battery boasts of its own smart power management system that Gionee claims can deliver almost 32 hours of talk time, up to 26 hours of non-stop video playback, and around 915+ hours of standby on a single charge. Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 facilitates fast charging, and the phone runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, along with the company’s own Amigo OS 3.5 on top.

The robust 5.7-inch Gionee M2017 packs a curved quad HD AMOLED screen, QHD resolution, sapphire glass protection and Adreno 510 graphics. It offers a minimum storage of 128 GB (expandable to 256 GB), dual SIM support, an 8-megapixel front camera and two rear cameras (12 MP and 13 MP) that promise a very impressive 2X optical zoom. A front-facing fingerprint scanner is yet another notable addition to the already splendid phone feature list.

Downsides
No headphone jack, No microSD slot, Use of a mid-range 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 653 processor.

Release and Price
On January 6th, 2017, the Gionee M2017 will officially go on sale in China. However, Gionee is yet to reveal details about the possibility and time of an international release.
The Gionee M2017 is available in black and gold colour options, and comes in two editions. The starting price (standard model) is priced at RMB 6,999, roughly $1,007, for a 128 GB version.
The luxurious 256 GB model sports an Italian custom alligator leather back, and its cost leaps straight to RMB 16,999, i.e. $2,446, slightly more than double of the lower version’s price.

Reuters reports that Uber has taken this step hoping to give its company image a facelift before mayor Manuela Carmena, a progressive and environmentally conscious local leader who is proactively working towards implementing several important vehicle pollution measures.

Carles Lloret, Uber’s MD for Southern Europe, reportedly told Reuters that these cleaner electric vehicles are part of the company’s efforts in doing their best to align their operations with the city’s vision, particularly to battle automobile pollution. Uber is operating in Madrid with restrictive licenses, and Lloret has expressed hope of being able to bag a higher number of licenses in the near future, even for greener cars.

A few years ago, Uber had to face some hostility from Madrid’s regulators and transportation providers. In 2014, UberPOP service was driven out of Spain after facing regulatory issues and hostility from the taxi industry. A year later in April, Uber expanded its UberONE services, boasting of professionally licensed drives. This year’s addition of electric cars is contained in this premium service, inclusive of conveniences like in-car Internet connectivity.

Uber is hoping to garner some legitimacy and goodwill with this recent move. The company hopes that this electric vehicle fleet will introduce a revolution and liberalization in the otherwise restricted car-sharing sector.

Another reason why ardent Apple fans are awaiting the new year with bated breath is the upcoming release of the iPhone 8, expected to mark the 10th anniversary of Apple’s original iPhone launch.

The highly-anticipated iPhone 8 will be an absolute overhaul of the existing iPhone design. Apple fans are looking forward to this smashing brand new, and “rumoured” edgeless design, as they could possibly do with some freshness after the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus handsets continue to sport the same design Apple has used for the third year in row now.

While it is not known what the iPhone 8 is exactly going to look like, there are some designers’ visions of the upcoming smartphone. Several reports say that the next-gen Apple iPhone 8 will have an OLED display curving down on both sides, and taking up a lot more space on the face than is the case with the current iPhone designs. One of the ways Apple will achieve this is by switching to the super-slim OLED display technology. Another is that Apple will most likely do away with the home button and implant a new kind of Touch ID fingerprint scanner into the display itself, thus eliminating the need for extra space below the screen.

Recently, Apple blog iDropNews posted a series of iPhone 8 concept images, showcasing the beautiful display, subtly sloping around the edges and seamlessly blending in with the bezels.

While there is presently no clear indication of how close this design is to the actual upcoming Apple iPhone 8, it is true that the phone’s concept images doing their rounds online are raising the anticipation further.

To celebrate the new Star Wars film Rogue One that released this December, ardent Japanese Star Wars fan and Twitter user @HanakiMasatoshi decided to build a neat, cutting-edge model of the Star Wars’ Millennium Falcon, and introduced a twist to the model. What gives this model an edge over other models that other fans have built over years? – Well, this one levitates.
This brilliant effect was made possible by @HanakiMasatoshi by using a magnetic levitation system that allows the object to hover 2.8 inches above its base. The system has been created by Crealev, a Dutch company.

This happens to be the second time this Japanese creative genius has showcased his smart levitating creations by building a floating reproduction of Han Solo’s prized possession. Last year, he built a smaller model that levitated at a slightly lower height – timing his first state-of-the-art creation to release around the debut of The Force Awakens.

The Star Wars franchise plans to release a new film every year in December, at least for the next three years. This hopefully means that @HanakiMasatoshi’s flying fan tributes will accordingly be updated every year at the corresponding time. Let’s wait and watch!

Nissan recently revealed its new LEAF details, saying that now every trim will be equipped with the 30-kWh battery pack, slashing the entry price to get the 107-mile range.

In the 2016 version, the 30-kWh pack was only available in the higher-end LEAF SV and SL versions. However, the same pack, which is supposedly Nissan’s best in-class range, is now also fitted into the new LEAF S with the price upped by $1,600. Arguably, this still remains the most economical price to receive the 100-mile plus range.

Additionally, in roughly half an hour, the battery can be quick-charged to 80% right from the low battery charge warning. It is estimated that it should take around six hours to charge on a home charging system (Level 2, 240 Volts) using the 6.6 kW on-board charger.

For ardent EV fans, the new LEAF offering is a tad disappointing as they were hoping for a better battery pack upgrade. However, rumour has it that Nissan will most likely leapfrog the ~40-kWh battery pack and eventually introduce the 60-kWh battery pack that has been on the cards for a while now.

However, it is also true that the currently offered 30-kWh battery design ups the vehicle’s capacity without adding bulk to the size of the battery pack. This is primarily because the structure of the laminated lithium-ion battery cells has been largely improved, along with better electrode material with revised chemistry. As a result, it delivers higher power density and offers improved overall battery durability.

The vehicle’s exterior is V-shaped with up-slanting halogen headlights. The exterior also showcases a standard rear spoiler, LED tail lights that are aerodynamically shaped, and a flat underbody with a rear diffuser. Standard on all SL models are fog lights and LED low-beam headlights.
As far as the interiors are concerned, there’s a digital instrument panel with a power meter, speedometer, battery temperature gauge, drive mode indicator, balance energy gauge, distance-to-empty display and capacity level gauge. The interiors also feature a percentage state-of-charge display. An interesting inclusion in the LEAF SV and SL models is that they exhibit a list of nearby charging stations on the NissanConnect info screen.

These models also include standard NissanConnectSM with navigation, with which, you get a 7-inch colour display with multi-touch control, HD radio, Nissan Voice Recognition for audio and navigation, SiriusXM Traffic and Travel LinkTM for weather, movie listings, fuel prices, stock and sports information. However, the SiriusXM subscription needs to be separately purchased.

Also standard on SV and SL versions is the NissanConnect EV system which allows the user to connect to the vehicle remotely, allowing monitoring of the battery charge level, starting charging event control and switching on heating and AC systems before getting into the vehicle. Safety features include Traction Control System, Vehicle Dynamic Control, four-wheel ABS, and six air bags.

The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices for the Nissan LEAF are $30,680 for the LEAF S, $34,200 for the LEAF SV, and $36,790 for the LEAF SL. Destination and handling charges would amount to $865. Financing options are also readily available, you can learn more about car rates here. The Nissan LEAF has already gone on nationwide sale at LEAF Certified Nissan dealers. As of last month, over 100,000 units of the 100% electric Nissan LEAF have been sold in the US, and more than 238,000 units have been sold in other parts of the world.

At a recent event in Munich, Huawei announced two new smartphones – The (Vanilla) Mate 9 and the Porsche Design Mate 9. The sleek limited-edition Porsche Design Mate 9 is packed with a plethora of performance and aesthetic variances that are hard to miss. Although there are several similarities between the two models, there are some interesting additional premium features in the Porsche Design model.

When it comes to a toss-up between the Huawei Porsche Design Mate 9 and the Mate 9, here’s everything you need to know:

Design
The Porsche Design Mate 9 and standard Mate model differ largely in terms design. The former offers a more premium look and feel compared to the standard model, and is sleeker, slimmer, and weighs lesser. The Porsche Design model features the Porsche Design logo at the back, which serves as a marked distinction between the two Mate 9 devices.

Fingerprint sensor positioning
The Porsche Design has a front-mounted fingerprint sensor, and in the standard model it is rear-mounted.

Dimensions
The Porsche Design model measures 152 x 75 x 7.5 mm, with a weight of 169 grams. The standard Mate 9 measures 156.9 x 78.9 x 7.9 mm and weighs more at 190 grams.

Color options
Being a limited-edition model, the Porsche Design is available in just one colour – Graphite Black. The standard model offers more color options – Champagne Gold, Moonlight Silver, Mocha Brown, Space Gray, Ceramic White and Black.

Display
Porsche Design Mate 9 – Smaller, sharper, curved
Standard Mate – Bigger, flat and lower resolution, 5.9-inch Full HD, Pixel density of 373ppi

Camera
Rear camera – Both have a 20 MP monochrome sensor with a 12 MP RGB sensor. These have an aperture of f/2.2, 4K video recording capability and optical image stabilisation. Both also have a 4-in-1 hybrid autofocus, combining contrast focus, laser focus, depth focus and phase detection focus.
Front camera – 8MP in both, with autofocus and an aperture of f/1.9.
Both offer the Leica partnership on the Huawei P9.

Resolution
The Porsche Design model has a 5.5-inch screen with Quad HD resolution, resulting in sharper pixel density at 534ppi. This model has a curved display and is equipped with AMOLED technology, hence the colours are a lot more vibrant.
The standard model has 2.5 D glass, making the screen curve neatly into the frame.
Both phones have 16.7 million colours, however, the Porsche Design model offers 100% colour saturation as opposed to the standard model’s 97%.

Hardware
The standard model comes with 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, along with microSD expansion support (through the secondary SIM slot). The Porsche Design Mate 9 offers 6 GB RAM and 256 GB storage, but no microSD support.
Both phones offer the Huawei Kirin 960 octa-core processor and Mali-G71 MP8 graphics. Also, both are dual-SIM, have a 4,000 mAh battery, and support quick charging technology, dubbed “SuperCharge” by Huawei. Both support USB Type-C.

Software
Both phones run on Android Nougat with the brand’s Emotion interface placed on the top in EMUI 5.0. The software experience rendered by both is almost the same, however, the Porsche Design model’s overall performance is likely to be a tad superior thanks to the boosted RAM.

Price
The Porsche Design Mate 9 is priced at € 1395 that’s roughly $ 1550, while Huawei Mate 9 standard model comes at half the price at € 699.
Although the Huawei Mate 9 is bigger and weightier than the Porsche Design model, the plus point is that it has a larger screen and more colour options. The Porsche Design model on the other hand has more RAM and storage, has a sharper display and of course is more premium. On the downside, it costs more and does not offer microSD support.
Starting next month, the limited-edition phone will be available in Porsche Design stores in select European cities (excluding UK). From January 2017, it will be on sale worldwide, in select Huawei retail stores in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, barring the US.
