Villiger: Newminster Superior Round Slices

This has been a very enjoyable smoke. The coins are sliced very thin, and they were easy to rub out. I got a medium strength Virginia flavor, with a pleasant spiciness from the Kentucky. This is a serious value, and on that basis alone it should probably get bumped to a 4. I found this very tasty and not a tobacco with a lot of complexity. You get the slightly sweet and mellow with just enough spice to notice but not overpower. I did not experience bitter as another reviewer did.

Peter Stokkebye: Aromatic Dutch Slices

I am on my first bowl of this, and I may come back to revise things if it grows on me or I get weary of it quickly.

This is a solid, pleasant, unassuming smoke. It does not require a lot of attention, and it delivers a basic tobacco flavor with just a whiff of a sweet topping. It is packaged as a rubbed out sliced and resembles Amphora. I would never characterize this as an aromatic, and I doubt most people would. It has been a very good smoke and has not shown any tendencies to but hot.

Sutliff Tobacco Company: Moulin Rouge

Delicious brother to the wonderful Molto Dolce. This will be my back up when/if
ever I want a break from Molto Dolce (another Sutliff blend).

It's got a nice fruity flavor and room note, pretty sure I detect subtle hints of
pineapple, pia colada, and green apple. Maybe like a juicy fruit type flavor as
well. It's a pleasurable smoke, little moist like all of Sutliff's aro's drying it out
makes it lose flavor so it's an undesirable thing to do.

Room note is nice, tin note is nice, and flavor is nice.

Again I am pleasantly surprised by how well the tin note transfers over to the
taste of the smoke.

I'd recommend this to anyone that likes aro's.

Lane Limited: 1-Q

I'm fairly new to pipe smoking and a friend of mine gave me a small
bag of the 1-Q to try out when I picked up a few corn cob pipes.
This stuff smells great in the bag and tastes great during the
smoke. Like I said, I'm a novice here and am continuing to learn
more about pipe smoking and types of tobaccos that I enjoy, but the
1-Q is really a great combination of light aroma and flavor. The
flavor is not overpowering and the smoke is cool with a little
sweetness from the Cavendish. I think this will continue to be my
standard for a while.

You can't go wrong here. I do notice that if I'm looking for a bit
more flavor or punch, I'll have to find another aromatic with a
stronger more consistent flavor during the smoke, but overall, this
will do fine, especially with the very pleasant room note.

Dunhill: Elizabethan Mixture

I think the return of Elizabethan Mixture is exciting. I hadnt smoked it since the late eighties. This mixture really has a simple tobacco taste, and my recollection tells me its awfully close to the original. Like most tobaccos, so its said, is cased, but E.M. doesnt appear topped IMO. That is why many reviewers recognize its dry earthy note. It is said that much of the sense of taste includes, if not requires, the sense of smell for the overall sensation. So that could be why, in some reviews, the piper scorns the blend due to it tasting like a cigarette (tobacco), when rather, the blend isnt heavily influenced by a topping. Ive also been smoking plenty of University Flake and its topping effects the taste and room note. E.M. is bright and darker Virginians with a nice touch of Perique. It starts out monochromatic but as you advance through the bowl the flavors deepen with a pure tobacco taste. I dont feel that this is a nicotine bomb, yet it satisfies me. My go-to tobacco Royal Yacht is cased and topped to the bejeezus, but I love it. Compare R.Y. and E.M. by the tin note and mouth feel, and youll see the smoke of Royal Yacht has an unnatural sweetness, whereas E.M. doesnt. As someone else said E.M. is similar to Peases Tribute, I say a bit like Fillmore, by its earthiness and dryness on the palate, or as Pease describes Embarcadero being brut rather than demi-sac. When I search out a change of pace tobacco I always smoke at least a full tin to determine if the tobacco has merit. It took several days of exclusively smoking E.M. to really understand and enjoy the blend. Hard puffing ruins the beautiful smoke. I also prefer my tobaccos to be drier, especially Virginians, to deliver pleasure. Anyhow, I like this tobacco for its simplicity- it satisfies me.

Momoyama: Momoyama

This was the first pipe tobacco I smoked. I live in Japan and found this in an old general store. The tin was from 2002 and cost me about 7 bucks.

As soon as I opened it, it gave off a scent of plum wine, figs and other berries. It was relatively moist even after 11 years!

It smoked realtively cool and evenly, it did have a little bit of tongue bite so please be careful.

I don't know how many of these are still around but if you can find the pre-MacBaren version, I would recommend it. I'm about half way through my 50g tin and it just gets better after every smoke. Very nice for an aromatic and definitely no synthetic casing taste.

Gawith, Hoggarth & Co.: Balkan Mixture

I read somewhere that this blend was commissioned by Wellers Tobacconist in Surrey to fill the gap in the market caused by the disappearance of Balkan Sobranies Original Mixture. I dont know how many recreations we now have of that tobacco, but I hope people continue to experiment. I seem to enjoy most of them, perhaps because I dont care whether or not theyre faithful to the original.

G&H Balkan Mixture is a very enjoyable tobacco. I find it somewhat reminiscent of Esotericas Margate. Its medium-full, with plenty of Virginia sweetness in the background supporting a moderate amount of smoky Latakia and creamy Orientals. The Latakia is mouth-coating and somewhat blunt, but the other tobaccos are elegant enough to maintain balance. In the tin, its a thin ribbon cut, a roughly equal mix of light and dark brown with lesser quantities of black and golden leaf. Tin aroma is dominated by the Latakiaa sweet, musty, smoky quality. The fine cut makes this easy to pack, light, and burn.

Ive always been mostly a foul-weather Latakia smoker. I love the heck out of mixtures when its cold or wet outside, but rarely smoke them when the sun is shining and the birds are singing. Ive enjoyed this mixture for a few years. But I fell head over heels in love with it last winter. I spent a month living in a hotel room (a 4th floor walk-up with one of the only western-style toilets in town) in a cold, wet, farming village in south-western China. The whole place smelled of creosote and charcoal. I was there over the New Year celebration (endless fireworks) and most of the places I visited were unheated, so people sat around little charcoal fires inside their drafty, cement block homes. My smoking companions were a half pound of BM and a few Falcons. Ive traveled a lot, but I dont think Ill ever find a better combination of pipe-tobacco-weather-community-mood, etc. It was utterly sublime.

G. L. Pease: Old London Series: Sextant

Popping a young tin of Sextant, the proof-y smell of (un-spiced) rum wafts right up, as expected. Next up is something mentioned by Dr. T (below), that I want to address, namely the Liquid Smoke condiment that some affectionately refer to as "barbeque sauce", which I happen to roundly loathe, almost as much as I loathe ethylene glycol. Like Dr. T, I also associate both with McClelland, which partly explains why I mostly avoid that marque. Fortunately, as with GLP's JackKnife Plug, the hated "smoke" scent fades with time. Still, I'd rather do without it altogether. The other tobaccos are pretty much "merged" under the dominant scents, but generally there is a "substance" similar to a medium/full English, tempered and "strengthened" by GLP's deep and mildly pungent signature KY. Moisture is typical for a GLP ribbon, with minimal water(!) as a humectant.

Prep in my dry climate is no more than setting some ribbons in the sun to dry, followed by a careful load with as many of the ribbons as possible oriented vertically. Smoked thoughtfully (best with all GLP blends, IMO), Sextant is Lat forward, and overall it is delightfully fragrant, including the rum. Withal, the Orientals quickly begin to spice things up, at which point I automatically adjust my cadence to taste. The VAs come up about 1/3, accompanied by muted but fragrant incense, and this is when it gets really good. I recommend minimal poking rather than tamping, and if you can smoke it all the way down in one shot, so much the better. The aftertaste is delightful, sort of like Margate Plus, with VA sugar, along with the spice and the strong KY tobacco. Like some other reviewers, I also notice and appreciate the "creamy" mouth feel.

For me, this is a fairly "easy" smoke - for a GLP blend - and it is an easy recommendation for lovers of full English blends who are also ready for the "extras" that Sextant packs. Like other GLP blends, there is a rough-and-ready, tobacco-forward quality that is an acquired taste. As for "strength", I would say Sextant is considerably stronger than medium., like many of GLP's blends that include his KY.

IMO, all GLP blends are best smoked with your brain in gear, and Sextant is no different. Also typical of GLP blends, breathing and cellar time are very good to Sextant.
