New Rul: Talking is not the essence of democracy

Voting is. John McCain was criticizing Barack Obama for failing to say if he will participate in 10 town-hall meetings with him. McCain ended by saying "The American people deserve to hear us debate, that is the essence of democracy". But I hear people talking and even debating in places with no democracy, like Iran, Russia and even Iraq! Just being able to talk doesn't make up a democracy, voting is what makes up a democracy. But in a country where less than half the citizens vote, democracy says democracy isn't very important.

New Rul: Shock tactics do work

But that doesn't mean they should still be used. A school in California visited 20 classrooms in one high school one Monday morning to announce several of their classmates and friends have been killed in DUI car accidents that weekend. The only catch was those students weren't really dead at all, just absent from school that day. The police officers and school officials used this scare tactic to try to deter students from drinking and driving. And they got their point across, students and teachers alike were crying for hours before they found out it was a hoax. But once you start lying to get your point across, it undermines the credibility of your argument. We have to fight ignorance with truth, not lies.

New Rul: Stop being lazy and do your job

... or get a new job. The TSA announced that they will be installing body scanners in the 10 biggest United States airports. This gives TSA agents a black and white (but detailed) image of your body and everything on your body. Maybe while they're checking everything out they can make sure I'm cancer free and in generally good health. They protect your privacy by "blurring people's faces", but it's really not the face I'm concerned about. I'm not wearing pants over my face. It just seems like the TSA is getting lazier and lazier, and with a sexy distraction like full body scanners I can see this hurting aviation security more than helping it.

New Rul: Don't pay for your munchies with marijuana

Some genius in New Zealand had this brilliant idea when he was at a gas station and realized he had no money when it was time to pay. So instead, he offered the clerk some marijuana to pay for his munchies. Even better, this guy was so high he didn't even realize there was a police officer standing right behind him, and he was immediately arrested. Listen up dude, if you're so broke you have to pay for munchies with pot, and so high you don't see the cop standing right next to you, it's time to put down the pipe and get a job.

New Rul: Free speech is number one for a reason

In a recent trial in Kansas City, the judge told a woman who was raped, that she wasn't allowed say the word “rape or “sexual assault in front of the jury. The judge's reason was that the defendant's right to a fair trial and presumption of innocence trumps the accuser's first amendment right to free speech. I don't think it should be up to the judge to tell this woman whether or not she was raped. It might be one thing if she was lying about being raped, but telling a rape victim she can't say the word "rape" deprives her of the words intended meaning, and of pleading her case properly to the jury. It's not a coincidence that our founding fathers chose to make the first amendment free speech.

New Rul: People can change

Robert Byrd is a 91-year-old United States Senator. He has admitted to joining the Ku Klux Klan in 1942, and he campaigned against civil rights legislation in the 60's while in congress. Yet today, Senator Byrd endorsed Barack Obama for president of the United States. In all fairness, Mr. Byrd has spent many years of his adult life repenting the racism of his earlier years, but endorsing Barack Obama really shows how people can change, and why it's so important to make Obama the leader of the free world.

New Rul: You don't have to buy a school to get your kids a good education

That's what Will Smith is doing. Until how, Will Smith and his wife have been home-schooling their two children (aged 9 and 7), and unlike most home-schooling parents they realize they can't teach their children everything. So the Smith family found 8 other home-schooled children and built a $900,000 school for them all to attend. There's no word on whether or not Xenu will be their teacher. Mr. Smith is leasing the campus for three years, plus he'll cover all the extra costs such as utilities.

New Rul: If you can't hear a helicopter crashing down on you, you probably deserve to die

Apparently a college student in Canada was killed after a helicopter crash landed on his head in the middle of the street! Why was this brilliant student unable to avoid the helicopter? He was listening to his iPod and was unable to hear (or see) the helicopter that was about to land on him. And while this was a freak accident, if you're walking around listening to music so loud you can't hear anything around you, it was only a matter of time until a Hummer ended you anyway.

New Rul: Stupidity is not a crime

Even if it should be, it's not up to the judges to decide this for us. Today the father of an 18-year-old girl was sent to jail for six months because his adult daughter failed to pass her General Equivalency Diploma test. The judge originally had good intentions in mind, but now he's officially lost his mind. He ordered the father to "stay on top" of his daughter's education because she had trouble in high school (while living with her mother). Now the 18-year-old girl has an 18-month-old daughter of her own, she's a legal adult, and her father is being punished for her in-actions. I can't be the only person that thinks either this judge has gone bad shit, or this isn't America anymore. Family or not, an American adult should not be punished for the actions of another adult, period. And what are we going to do about all the parents who have children with Down's syndrome? And since when was it against the law to not get your GED? We can make our own choices in this country, and if somebody chooses not to be educated that's their choice, but they shouldn't be allowed to be judges!

New Rul: Keep your pot away from the pot-trial

A woman in Houston who was a juror in a marijuana-possession case, was caught smoking a joint outside the court house before the trial! What's worse is she didn't even bring enough for the whole jury. But maybe she should have, and if everybody in the court room was high they would see how stupid it is that we're wasting so much time and money over a plant. Plus the judge wouldn't remember why anybody was there and the case would be dismissed.
