This specific passage talks about showing favoritism to the “rich,” but I believe there is a broader context. We should not condemn those who are different than ourselves. All of us need the blood of Jesus for salvation.

In our world today, there are a lot of people who have very different life experiences than our own. Some of them have walked a very different path and may have come to Christ later in life. They may have different hairstyles, clothing or even (gasp!) have tattoos.

Friends showing Religious Cross TattooWhile we’re on the subject of tattoos, let’s address the question “Does God condemn tattoos?” The most relevant passage is in Leviticus 19.

“Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves.”

If you look at the passage in cultural and historical context, Moses is warning the Israelites against pagan worship and practices. Cutting of the flesh is prohibited, but would that also apply to medical procedures? I think not.  The prohibition here is against the cutting of flesh as part of a ceremony honoring false gods.

Archeological evidence shows the Canaanites would tattoo themselves with the names or symbols of their favorite gods. It does not condemn the modern custom of aesthetic tattooing. (Unless you’re tattooing yourself with symbols of false religions.)

The New Testament does not address the issue of tattooing specifically, so it’s really just a matter of taste.
