Why Does [...]

The final version of Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) was released on August 27, 2001. It was released at the same time as Windows XP and was the last version of IE to be called “Microsoft” Internet Explorer, later version being referred to as “Windows” Internet Explorer.

It’s aims were noble: more privacy, reliability and flexibility.

Why Does IE6 Cause So Many Problems

Internet Explorer is a very popular piece of sotware. It is included in distributions of Windows and is the default web browser. This means that all home users and particularly office users will have it as their default browser when they first start using Windows. According to Market Share from Net Applications, it is still the most widely used web browser, with 22.08% share of the market.

The reason it causes so many problems is because it is so old and full of vulnerabilities and lack of support for modern web standards.

Why Won’t People Upgrade?

Many web developers have become totally fed up with the frustrations of testing and developing for IE6 and are forever bemoaning people to upgrade to either a different browser or a more recent version of IE. If you find know somebody who is running IE6 on their personal PC, you could probably convince them to upgrade.

When it comes to office users, the problems is not that people won’t upgrade, it’s that they can’t. A survey by Digg in August 2009 revealed that 3 out of 4 IE6 users were using this browser because they had no choice.

Office Users and Corporations

Large companies and particulary Government organisations all over the world rely on Internet Explorer and force their employess to use it. Since it is a standard part of Windows, it is supported by Microsoft and they will guarantee to support it until 2014.

Unfortunately, the software contained many bugs, flaws and failed implementations of web standards. Web developers were forced to introduce “hacks” and workarounds to get web pages to work as expected in Internet Explorer 6.

However, due to bad coding techniques and lack of foresight by these developers, many of these workarounds are not forward compatible. Companies may have invested in 10 year web projects back in 2001. At that time web developers could only work with what was released at the time. And that was IE6. There was no competition back in those days. Indeed, if Firefox had not been released, IE6 could very well have remained the only web browser available today.

It is difficult to find a case to convince IT administrators to invest in upgrading. While you may quote savings of 25% on future web development tasks, is this really significant in comparison to the potantial cost of updating business-critical web applications?

In a nutshell, if all the IE6 installations in the world were upgraded tonight, there would be a lot of broken web applications tomorrow morning. For a hospital or a school or a government department this is unacceptable. For them it is much easier to continue to use IE6 rather than invest time and money making sure applications work in more up-to-date versions of IE.

What Should We Do About It?

Some massive sites on the internet such as Digg and You Tube have publicly discussed the idea of blocking IE6. Sites like these probably don’t receive a lot of traffic from office users (or at least they shouldn’t) so blocking these users probably won’t cause a lot of impact.

However, what if a site like Google decided to block IE6? It is fair to say that Google is well used by corporate users and it would cause a whole lot of trouble if this ever happened.

Until Microsoft do something about forcing corporate users to upgrade IE6 we are going to have to continue to support it. So just get used to it!

These days many people own a large number of domain names. One of the problems that we come across is how to manage all the email for these domains. If you may only receive a few emails each day for each website you run, does it really seem worthwhile logging into your email system for every website multiple times each day?

What would be ideal would be if email sent to any address for any of your domains was routed to a single email account.

In this article we are going to look at how to manage email for multiple websites from a single login system. We are going to use the free version of Google Apps for Domains to do it.

Sign Up For The Service

If you aren’t already a user of Google Apps the first step is to sign up. Google Apps is great and it gives you access to email, document collaboration and a calendar for your organisation. They also offer an upgraded version you can use if you like, but we will stick with the free one for now.

Navigate to the Google Apps for Domains Homepage and click the standard edition.

Google Apps Introduction Screen

The next page will give you a comparison between the standard and premier versions. If you want to continue with the free signup click the blue “Get Started” button in the top right corner.

On the next page you can either enter a domain name you currently own, or opt to register one through Google.

Google Apps Registration Screen

You are then required to enter the administrator’s contact details as well as answer some questions about your organisation. Google also notifies you that you must be able to change your MX records (so email sent to you is routed through Google) and create CNAME records for your domain (so you can use friendly URLs such as mail.mydomain.com).

You only need to set this up for your primary domain name. We will add more domains later on.

Create A Catch-All Email Address

One thing I like to do is get my website visitors to send emails to a specific address that is relevant to the subject they are contacting me about. For example, if I am looking for beta testers for new software I would like people to email beta@newwebmasters.net. However, I don’t want all the hassle of having to set a new email address up.

Manage Email Settings in Google Apps

This is where a catch-all email address comes into play.

Let’s create one in Google Apps.

First of all, ensure the email address you want to use has been created.

Next, click Service Settings then Email and scroll down to Catch-all address. Enter the username of the person to whom all email should be sent and click Save Changes.

From now on any email sent to an address that doesn’t have an account setup will be routed to the email address you just picked.

Add Multiple Domains

A great feature of Google Apps is the ability to add domain aliases. Say for example if you own mydomain.com and mydomain,org, you can add one as an alias so email sent to a user on either domain will be routed to the same email inbox.

To add a new alias click Domain Settings and then Domain Names. Click Add a domain alias to start adding a new domain. Every domain you add will have to be verified before it can be used.

The screenshot below shows the domains currently set up on my account.

Domain Aliases on Google Apps

From this you can see that any email sent to chris@mywebcards.net and chris@page-checker.com will be forwarded to chris@newwebmasters.net.

But now we have all email for all of our domains forwarded to a single email address, how do we keep them sorted and organised? This is where Google’s fantastic filtering and labelling comes in useful.

Filter and Sort Incoming Mail

Google Apps Email has all the features that Gmail has. This includes the labelling and filtering system.

You must login to the catch-all email account you just created. It is important that you use the correct account.

First of all, let’s create a new label for each domain we are expecting email from. In the screenshot below we have set it up for our 3 domains, mywebcards.net, newwebmasters.net and page-checker.com.

Labels in Google Apps Email

To set them up click Edit Labels at the bottom of the Labels box in the left hand column. Type your label in the Create a new label box and click Create.

Next we have to filter all our incoming mail so it is assigned the correct label.

Firstly click Create a filter at the top of any page. It is the small text just to the right of the search box.

In the To box enter *@yourdomain.com. So for example, in the screenshot below we have entered *@newwebmasters.net. This will catch all mail sent to anybody at this domain.

Using filters in Google Apps Email

You can click Test Search to check the correct emails are being picked up. Otherwise just click Next Step. You can apply the label to emails that have already been received by checking the Also apply filter to conversations below checkbox.

Next you need to choose an action to perform on these emails. Check the Apply the label checkbox and choose the appropriate label you created earlier. Click Create Filter to action your changes.

You then need to repeat these steps for each domain you have set up.

Each email you receive should then be filtered into the appropriate label you have just set up.

This is very useful to help you manage your email on multiple domains and I hope you find these steps useful.

Ebay is a strange place. And the people who shop there are even stranger.

I won some Amazon vouchers that I didn’t really want so I decided to see if it was worth selling them on Ebay. Just because I didn’t want them doesn’t mean I want to sell them for below face value.

Looking through the listings quite a few of them struck me as odd. Take a look at this one for example.

Amazon vouchers on Ebay selling for more than face value

I don’t know what went through the head of that 6th bidder when they put in a bid of more than £100, but I assumed it was maybe just an error.

Looking through some of the completed auctions, I soon realised this was no error, it seems to happen quite regularly.

More Amazon vouchers on Ebay selling for more than face value

So what is happening on Ebay? Why are people willing to pay so much for vouchers? If anybody has any ideas then please let me know.

Search engines are keen to provide us with lots of advice about building good 404 erros pages. Let's see how well they follow their own advice.

Google is pretty good about giving information to webmasters about how to design good pages that get listed in Google. They tell us to use descriptive title tags, how to prevent duplicate content problems and how to check if your site has been hacked.

Google 404 Error Page

Yahoo 404 Error Page

Bing 404 Error Page

They also provide information on how to produce good 404 error pages. At the bottom of that article they provide a list of items to include in your 404 error page (read more about HTTP status codes). These are supposed to help the user find what they are looking for and to ensure they stay on your website.

In this article we are going to look at the 404 error pages on Google, Yahoo and Bing to see how many of these guidelines they follow themselves. The sites are given a mark out of 10 for how well they meet each guideline.

We are going to access the following URLs:

http://www.google.com/fake-page

http://www.yahoo.com/fake-page

http://www.bing.com/fake-page

Tell visitors clearly that the page they’re looking for can’t be found. Use language that is friendly and inviting

Google

The page – www.google.com/fake-page – does not exist.

The message that the page cannot be found is pretty clear although the error text is the same size as the rest of the page.

Mark: 4/10

Yahoo

Sorry, the page you requested was not found.

This text is larger than the rest of the page, is in bold and is centered. It is very clear that the page cannot be found.

Mark: 8/10

Bing.com

Let’s try that again

Although there is some explanatory text below, this is a terrible header to use for an error page. It is very vague and really doesn’t help the user.

The text “That web page doesn’t exist. Let’s see if we can help you find what you are looking for” is much more useful. If they used this as the header they would definitely improve the page.

However, it is the only error page that actually used a <h1> tag for the page header.

Mark: 4/10

Make sure your 404 page uses the same look and feel (including navigation) as the rest of your site.

Google

The page features the standard Google search box and logo at the top and the familiar links to popular Google sites such as Videos, Maps and News.

Mark: 8/10

Yahoo

Features the Yahoo logo and the links back to the homepage and help sections. Doesn’t feature the standard links to Yahoo Mail that seem to feature on a lot of Yahoo pages. However, each section of Yahoo seems to have its own style and design so this would be a difficult rule for Yahoo to follow.

Mark: 5/10

Bing

Has the standard site header, log and search box at the top of the page. It is even customised for your location and whether you are signed in or not.

Mark: 10/10

Consider adding links to your most popular articles or posts, as well as a link to your site’s home page.

The way I read this is that Google is recommending that as well as linking to your homepage, you should direct users to some popular sections of your site that they might be looking for.

Google

The only link to the homepage is via the Google logo at the top. Aside from that, the only even remotely useful link is to the help center. And the help topics it links to are not even specific for the error we have encountered. Not very helpful at all.

Mark: 2/10

Yahoo

Yahoo features a link to the homepage via the logo at the top and a text link in the main body. There is also a link to a list of Yahoo’s services and Yahoo Help Central. Like Google, this help center doesn’t link to a specific page that is relevant to our current problem.

Mark: 3/10

Bing

Bing features their logo at the top which links to the homepage and a text link to the help pages. As with the other two, not a link to help us with our current problem.

Mark: 3/10

Make sure that your webserver returns an actual 404 HTTP status code when a missing page is requested.

All the pages returned proper 404 headers. It would have been terribble news if they hadn’t.

Mark: All sites 10/10

Use the Enhance 404 widget to embed a search box on your custom 404 page and provide users with useful information to help them find the information they need.

None of the search engines actually uses this widget, but what it is trying to achieve is very useful.

It provides a search box and tries to extract query data from the URL to put in this box. This then allows you to search the current site for what you are looking for.

It also tries to list some close match URLs (see an example).

Let’s see if the search engines have any of these features in their sites.

Google

Google has a search box, but it doesn’t just search Google, it is just Google’s standard web search.

There is no list of closest match URLs either. So say if I accidentally typed in this URL:

http://www.google.com/analatics

Google should be clever enough to know that I am really looking for Google analytics. But it doesn’t, and that’s very disappointing.

Mark: 0/10

Yahoo

Yahoo sufferes from the same problem as Google, no list of closest match pages and the search box doesn’t just search Yahoo.

Mark: 0/10

Bing

It seems this is standard practice on the big three search engines. No list of closest matches and no search box for just bing.com.

Mark: 0/10

Total Marks

Google

24/40 = 60%

Yahoo

26/40 = 65%

Bing

27/40 = 67.5%

You can see that each search engine has similar marks, and that they are fair, but could definitely be improved.

It seems that search engines could do with a dose of their own medicine before telling us how to design our own 404 pages.

Amazon offers affiliate programs for all its websites. This article will help you display the correct affiliate code to your visitors.

Many websites that feature product reviews or recommended reading lists like to link people to Amazon so they can look at the product and buy it for themselves. The authors of these websites like to put their Amazon affiliate tag into the link so they can earn a small comission from the sales.

The problem that I, and a lot of people have, is that Amazon has many different sites and you need to sign up to the affiliate program for each site separately.

For example, if you are registered with the amazon.co.uk affiliate program, you cannot use that affiliate tag on a link to amazon.com.

Make money all over the world

Perhaps you think “why not just sign up to each affiliate program separately? This is not a problem. The problem comes with making sure your website visitors see a link to the correct Amazon store for them.

For example, visitors from the US should see a link to amazon.com, with your amazon.com affiliate tag. Visitors from France should see a link to amazon.fr with your amazon.fr affiliate tag.

Identifiying The User’s Country With Maxmind

Maxmind is a service that takes any IP address supplied by you and tells you the country, state (or region), city and latitude and longitude. The service is not free, but the prices are very reasonable. You can get 200,000 IP address lookups for just $20. There is nothing to download as you simply make your lookup request to the Maxmind servers. Also, the credits never expire so you don’t have to use them up within a certain time limit.

You have to supply the service with the IP address to look up first. There are many ways to detect a user’s IP address in PHP, but this is how I go about doing it:

function getRealIpAddr()
{
    if (!empty($_SERVER['HTTP_CLIENT_IP'])) //check ip from share internet
    {
      $ip=$_SERVER['HTTP_CLIENT_IP'];
    }
    elseif (!empty($_SERVER['HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR'])) //to check ip is pass from proxy
    {
      $ip=$_SERVER['HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR'];
    }
    else
    {
      $ip=$_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'];
    }
    return $ip;
}

Once you have detected the user’s IP address you need to access the Maxmind web service. There is some sample code on the Maxmind website, but I will guide you through it now using PHP.

Maxmind offer two services, one that returns the location and the other which returns the location and ISP details. We will just use the location one as all we are looking for is the country.

The service is accessed with the following URL:

http://geoip3.maxmind.com/b

It takes 2 parameters:

i (lowercase I) – which is the IP address you are checking

l (lowercase L) – your own licence key

Here is an example with a dummy IP address and licence key

http://geoip3.maxmind.com/b?i=123.54.566.4&l=123abc456def

This is the PHP code that we are going to use to return our information:

$query = "http://geoip3.maxmind.com/b?l=" . $license_key . "&i=" . $ipaddress;
$url = parse_url($query);
$host = $url["host"];
$path = $url["path"] . "?" . $url["query"];
$timeout = 1;
$fp = fsockopen ($host, 80, $errno, $errstr, $timeout)
	or die('Can not open connection to server.');
if ($fp) {
  fputs ($fp, "GET $path HTTP/1.0\nHost: " . $host . "\n\n");
  while (!feof($fp)) {
    $buf .= fgets($fp, 128);
  }
  $lines = split("\n", $buf);
  $data = $lines[count($lines)-1];
  fclose($fp);
} else {
  # enter error handing code here
}
echo $data;
$geo = explode(",",$data);
$country = $geo[0];
$state = $geo[1];
$city = $geo[2];
$lat = $geo[3];
$lon = $geo[4];

After all this effort we get what we were trying to find.

Contained inside the variable $country is a two letter country code that indicates the visitor’s location.

Those that are relevant to us are:

US – USA

GB – Great Britain (UK)

CA – Canada

FR – France

DE – Germany

JP – Japan

CN – China

These are all the countries that Amazon operates websites in. The ones that you choose to use depends on the target audience of your website. Most English langage sites will just focus on the US, UK and Canadian markets.

How to Display The Correct Product Links

Now we finally get to the meat of the article. We have joined our appropriate affiliate programs, detected where our visitor is, so now we need to display the correct code.

if($country == "UK")
{
     // Display our UK affiliate code here
}
elseif($country == "CA")
{
     // Display our Canadian affiliate code here
}
else
{
     // Display our US affiliate code here
}

What this code does is displays the Canadian or UK affiliate code if the user is in either one of those countries. If not, then display the US code. The US code will be displayed as a fall back if the script cannot detect the location, or the visitor is in one of those countries we are not catering for.

Geographic targetting is not 100% reliable and you should always have a fallback incase the scripts encounter any problems (like displaying affiliate code for the US site if the script is not sure where the visitor is from).

I hope this code helps you to make a lot more money from Amazon. Feel free to post any comments or questions below.

There are many backup solutions available for your website. But none of them seem to address the most common situation: backing up shared Linux hosting using a Windows computer. Let's solve that today.

I have been looking at the issue of backups quite a lot recently. I am going to jump straight into the problem that I have faced:

Most webmasters used shared hosting on Linux servers but want to backup their webserver to their Windows computer.

It sounds like a pretty simple problem to be solved, but unfortunately there are very few methods available to perform a backup in this situation. Most solutions you come across will happily give you instructions to create a compact, archived version of your site and then save it back on your web server. This is all well and good, but what do we do with these? If the server fails we will lose the backups too!

Likewise, there are plenty of solutions that work perfectly if you are backing up onto a local Linux installation, but most people are running Windows and want to get a local copy of the backup on their own PC. These are the people who this tutorial is aimed at.

Ensure You Have Everything You Need

This tutorial is for people who wish to backup any particular path on their server. You need to have SSH access. You also need to be running Windows.

Install Cygwin

Cygwin is a program for Windows that emulates a Linux-like environment. It provides Windows users with a colllection of tools to perform various tasks commonly performed on Linux installations. This is the software we will be using. Visit www.cygwin.com and download straight from the homepage.

Next, run the setup.exe file you just downloaded.

At the introduction screen, click next then select Install from Internet and click next.

On the next screen, choose a directory to install Cygwin. Make sure you choose a path that doesn’t contain any spaces. A good choice is C:\cygwin. Then click next. The next screen will ask you where to store the installation files. You can set this to the same directory you chose for installation on the previous screen. Then click next.

One more screen will appear for you to choose your internet connection method. The default choice of “Direct connection” is usually fine. Cygwin will download a list of mirrors. Choose one that is close to you and then click next. It will take a few seconds to download the list of files.

Choose Elements to Install

The next screen is a bit busy and might seem confusing, but it just lists every application that you can install in Cygwin. By default they are grouped by category. You can click + next to each category to view the individual applications.

Click the View button at the top right of the screen and the view will change from “Category” to “Full.” This will allow us to select the specific applications we want to install.

We need to be careful which applications we choose here. Some will be chosen by default. Choose the applications listed below by clicking on the word “Skip” for each one. The word skip will change to the version number to signify it will be installed. The applications are all listed alphabetically.

rsync

openssh

openssl

The program will automatically choose any other files that are required, so just accept anything else that Cygwin chooses for you. Click Next to start download.

You may have to wait several minutes while the files are downloaded and installed (see below).

Once installation has completed click Finish. We now have a working installation of Cygwin in which to perform our backup.

Running the Backup File

Cygwin has now installed the tools to perform our backup. This is what our backup script looks like. It assumes that you have installed Cygwin in c:\cygwin. Save it as backup.bat so it can be executed.

@echo off

C:
chdir c:\cygwin

echo set date format........................
echo ...
echo ...
echo ...
echo ...

rem get date, make if file name friendly
FOR /F "tokens=1-4 delims=/ " %%i in ('date/t') do set d=%%k-%%j-%%i

echo Running rsync........................
echo ...
echo ...
echo ...
echo ...
c:\cygwin\bin\rsync -aze c:\cygwin\bin\ssh username@example.com:/home/user/public_html "/cygdrive/d/bk/%d%"

So what does this script actually do? It connects to your server at example.com and backs up the public_html folder to the folder D:\bk. The folder name will be based on the date, for example D:\bk\2009-06-21.

Cygwin lists all your drives in a folder called /cygdrive. So the C: drive will be located in /cygdrive/c and the D: drive will be located in /cygdrive/d.

This is the line that you need to edit:

c:\cygwin\bin\rsync -aze c:\cygwin\bin\ssh username@example.com:/home/user/public_html "/cygdrive/d/bk/%d%"

c:\cygwin\bin\rsync is the path to rsync. This path is correct if you have installed Cygwin in C:\cygwin

c:\cygwin\bin\ssh is the path to ssh.

username@example.com:/home/user/public_html is your login to your SSH server and the path you wish to backup.

“/cygdrive/d/bk/%d%” is the path where you want to save your backup. %d% refers to the date in the format YYYY-MM-DD. In this format the backup will be saved in D:\bk\2009-06-21.

Edit all these variables as is necessary.

Run Your Backup and Check Eveything Works

Since you have saved the file as a backup.bat file, you can simply double-click it in Windows and it will execute. Ensure your backup directory exists and double-click backup.bat to execute it.

The way the script is setup, it will always ask you for your SSH password. It is possible to set up your server so SSH access is always granted.

You can use the Windows task manager to execute your backup regularly.

Let me know how you get on with it or if you run into any problems.

Backing up your web server is something that people know about, but don't necessarily do. Let's look at why its so important.

As a webmaster it is very difficult to find time for anything that isn’t part of your core business. This means that administration often suffers. It is hard to devote time to doing something that doesn’t produce new content and isn’t immeditaly obvious what you have done.

But the one thing that you should never neglect is backups. You can compare it to insurance. Chances are you won’t need it, but when you do, you are very thankful you took the time to do it.

Doing backups is not as easy as it should be. A lot of time and effort is required to set it all up. But fortunately they can be automated to a high degree. And don’t forget to test them too. Even when a backup appears to have gone without a hitch, the only way to know whether it’s of any value is to attempt to restore the information. If it can’t be restored, the backup is worthless. And it’s not good to find that out just after your hard disk has died.

Most good web hosting companies generate their own backups. These are all well and good, but you cannot rely on them. The backups they make are for their own purposes in case of hard disk failure. If you find you have accidentally overwritten a file that you shouldn’t have, this is where your backups come into play. Your webhost’s backup will not be suitable for situations like this.

If you host uses Cpanel, you have the chance to generate your own backups at will. You can take a full dump of your web server space, including all files, email filters and databases. Unfortunately, you have to save it to your webserver or transfer it via FTP. Don’t forget to keep copies of your own backups however. If you store your backups on the same server as your files then it’s not a backup at all! It is all time consuming and tedious, but it is still essential.

So it’s worth putting some time into developing a good backup strategy and sticking to it.

Bandwidth and server load have historically been concerns of the competent webmaster. We look at whether we still have to worry about it.

Make sure network capacity is sufficient for your website

Please note: This article was written from the perspective or a website developer. I am not a networking or HTTP expert and this article is designed for people who have general responsibility for running websites. Feel free to leave any comments below.

Introducing Two Old Friends

Bandwidth and server load are two factors that can affect your ability to run a website.

Bandwidth actually has two meaning when refering to running a website. Firstly it can mean the network capacity for web traffic back and forth at a given time, i.e. how much data can be transferred per second.

Alternatively it means the amount of data that is allowed to be transferred in a specific interval, such as one month. Both are important when running a website. As files are uploaded and downloaded, emails exchanged, and web pages accessed, network bandwidth is being used.

Total monthly bandwidth is a cap that all hosting companies place on sites in order to share the total network capacity equally between all the sites. Cheap webhosting is available because hosting companies can cram multiple websites onto a single server. For sites with relatively low traffic and data demand, this “shared” hosting is perfect. It is cheap, but sufficient resources are available to run your site smoothly. Hosting companies monitor sites in order to keep one site from accidentally or deliberately consuming all the network capacity.

Even websites on dedicated or virtual private hosting will have a bandwidth limit, but they will be significantly more generous than the limits on shared hosting.

Server load is a much less commonly discussed subject. It refers to CPU utilisation on the server that hosts the website. The CPU (central processing unit) is the component in a computer that processes information and commands from programs, ordering memory to be used a certain way, moving files from one place to the next and more. For example, every time MySQL needs to access and process some information from the database, the CPU will perform all the calculations.

Server load is displayed as a number usually in the format x.xx. The aim is for the server load to be as low as possible. Basically, a higher server load means the server is under pressure to do more work.

There is no cut off as to what is an acceptable server load and what isn’t, but it generally accepted that your server load can increase by 1 for every CPU your server has and all should be OK. For example, if your server has 1 CPU a server load up to 1.00 is OK. Whereas if your server has 3 CPUs the server load is acceptable up to 3.00.

Memory capacity on any computer is limited. In a perfect world, every component of a server would get access to as much of the CPU as they needed. Unfortunately this cannot always be the case. Special operating system functions control how the processing time is shared out among all the competing processes. The server load indicates how “in demand” the server currently is. It constantly changes and will ebb and flow throughout the day.

But Is It Important

While keeping an eye on your bandwidth usage and server load is not the most important, or most exciting, or administrative tasks, it is still important. If you use up all your bandwith your webhost could potentially charge you a lot of money. Even worse, your website could be unavailable until you get the problem sorted out.

It is completely unacceptable to run out of bandwidth and if you ever get as close as using 75% of your available bandwidth, get the situation sorted immediately. All you need is for your site to get popular on Digg or Stumble Upon and you could potentially use a huge amount of bandwidth in a short period of time. If those visitors start receiving a message that your site has run out of bandwidth, you are losing out on a great many number of visitors.

High bandwidth plans are extremely cheap these days.

Server load is beyond your control. You don’t have any influence on how many websites are crammmed onto a single server or what the high demand times are for those sites.

Conclusions

After exploring bandwidth and server load our conclusions are quite clear. In this day and age of super cheap hosting there is simply no excuse for running out of bandwidth. We have also learned that server load is important, but we have no control over it. If you find that your server has a consistently high server load, it is time to consider to moving to a new host, or perhaps looking for VPS hosting.

Ranking for popular terms can be difficult. A good solution is to rank for some common misspellings of popular terms. Spelling errors get a surprising number of searches every day.

Over the last few weeks I have noticed a significant number of visitors to this website searching for “plagirism.” The first thing that struck me was the spelling of the word. Plagirism should be spelt “plagiarism.”

Currently, 2.5% of this website’s search traffic comes form people searching for “plagirism.”

According to Google’s Adwords tool, plagirism has 4 400 searches per month. This may be just a tenth of what plagiarism gets, but plagirism (incorrect spelling) has 10 500 results in Google, while plagiarism (correct spelling) has 6 360 000. There are a lot of numbers to look at, but can you see which would be easier to penetrate the first page of search results for?

Here is the data summarised in a table:

I then decided to look at a list of commonly mispelled words to see how I could gain traffic by taking advantage of these. There are a lot of words that would be tricky to drop into your website, the likes of “consensus,” “embarass” and “foreward” would be difficult to find a place for.

Here are some good words you might want to look at, together with their monthly search volume and number of results in Google. You can also take a look at a list of commonly mispelled words in Wikipedia.

Some Caveats

As you probably know, whenever Google encounters a spelling error it will offer to redirect you to the correct spelling. Obviously this will take away some of your traffic and you need to bear this is mind, particularly when looking at the number of montly Google searches.
