NYC.gov recently released an update on cycling trends in the city.

Introduction
Over the past two decades, New York City has seen tremendous growth in cycling, reflecting broad efforts to expand the city’s bicycle infrastructure. In the mid-1990s, NYC DOT established a bicycle program to oversee development of the city’s fledgling bike network. Since then, NYC DOT has led the charge to build an expansive network that serves an ever growing number of New Yorkers. These efforts were accelerated following the release of PlaNYC in 2007, which set ambitious goals toward creating a more sustainable city, and have been expanded further—with increased emphasis on transportation safety and equity—under the framework of OneNYC.

Since 2010, NYC DOT has expanded and enhanced the on-street bike network by nearly 300 miles, including more than 40 protected lane miles, with a record 12 miles installed in 2015. NYC DOT is on track to install even more protected lanes in 2016, with over 15 new miles planned. With this expansion of bicycle routes on City streets, along with the miles of new greenway paths in public parks, and the introduction of bike share, there have never been more people biking in New York City. Creation of local bike networks beyond the Manhattan core, in communities such as Long Island City and Brownsville, encourages people to use a bicycle to get around their own neighborhoods to run errands or visit friends. Development of new stretches of path along greenways such as the Brooklyn Waterfront and Bronx River makes it more enticing for cyclists to take recreational rides and provide comfortable spaces for parents with young children to go for family bike rides. Miles of protected on-street bike lanes are emboldening the more cautious and risk-averse New Yorkers to take to the streets on a bike, while Citi Bike makes cycling a more convenient option for quick trips around the city and multi-modal commutes—even for those who do not own a bicycle.

This Cycling in the City brief sees to answer two basic questions:

How frequently are New Yorkers using cycling as a mode of transportation?

How is that frequency changing over time?

In addition to the customary three Saturdays of car-free streets on Park Avenue and Lafayette Street this summer, the city will be trying out something new for Summer Streets. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on August 13, car traffic will be limited within a 60-block area of the Financial District.

The 13th will be the second Saturday in this year’s Summer Streets schedule. For the new car-lite zone, motorists entering the area will have to pass through NYPD-staffed “vehicular traffic entry points,” where they will be encouraged to drive five miles per hour or less. With minimal car traffic entering the neighborhood, the streets will open up to “cultural programming, including walking tours and other activities,” according to City Hall’s announcement.

About the Tour

Bike the Boros: NYC Century is a friendly, non-competitive ride. It starts and finishes at Pier 97 on the Hudson River Greenway. New this year, the ride features three courses: The Imperial Century — 100 miles, The Metric Century — 62 miles and The Half Metric Century — 31 miles. Each course taking you on your own adventure. Visit “The Course” section for more information.

There are no road closures so riders are asked to please stay to the right of the road. Be sure to ride at a safe speed and obey traffic laws at all times. We ride rain or shine.

The Course

Route Details

31 miles — The Half Metric Century
This route is ideal for riders looking for something more than the average Saturday stroll. The route travels through historic Downtown Brooklyn, past idyllic Prospect Park, through the artistic enclave of Williamsburg and follows the East River all the way to Astoria Park in Queens. The route begins at Pier 97 at 7:30 am. You should expect to finish between 11 am and 3 pm.

62 miles – The Metric Century
This route is not for the faint of heart, but it’s rewards are many. Riders travel out to Far Rockaway, Queens and beautiful Fort Tilden Beach. The route takes riders along miles of the Queens Greenway, through the serene, car-free Forest Park and up to Kissena Park, before cutting west through northern Queens to Astoria Park. Route begins at Pier 97 at 6:45 am. You should expect to finish between 12 pm and 4 pm.

100 mile — The Imperial Century
The full 100 mile tour is for experienced cyclists only. 100 mile riders continue on into eastern Queens, along the waterfront on Little Neck Bay and under the Throgs Neck Bridge, before looping back to Astoria Park and continuing into the Bronx. This part of the ride is hilly and the most challenging. The route then winds down into northern Manhattan and historic Harlem. The route begins at Pier 97 at 6 am. You should expect to finish between 12 pm and 6 pm.

Please note: All routes begin and end at Pier 97.

The 2016 Five Boro Bike Tour is Sunday, May 1st.

New York’s Five Boro Bike Tour is the largest recreational cycling event in the United States. Every year on the first Sunday of May, over 30,000 riders participate in the 40 mile ride around New York City. The route, closed to automobile traffic, takes riders through all five boroughs of New York City, across five major bridges, and finally across New York Harbor on the Staten Island Ferry. It is a lot of fun for cyclists of all skill sets and highly recommended.

Start & Schedule
The Tour begins in Lower Manhattan in staggered start waves, which correspond to the color of your bib and bike plate (which you’ll receive when you pick up your rider packet at the Expo). In the event that members of your group are assigned to different start waves, please ride together in a later wave. Check back for more details.
Bag Restrictions
No bags with shoulder straps (including backpacks and hydration packs), no panniers or bags that hang on the side of your bike, no covered baskets, and no bags over 420 cubic inches.

Note that in accordance with the criteria above, the Manhattan Portage bag that is included in the VIP package will not be allowed on the Tour.
Rider Identification Kit (RIK)
The RIK, which you will receive in your rider packet, comprises a helmet cover, bib, and bike plate. The complete RIK must be visible at all times in order to participate in the Tour.
Rules of the Road

Wear your helmet. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

Have your RIK visible at all times: attach the bike plate to your handlebars, affix the bib to your chest, and wear your helmet cover. You will be asked to leave the Tour if any element of your RIK is missing.

Respect other cyclists.

Human-powered bikes only0

Use hand signals to indicate that you are slowing down, stopping, turning, or changing lanes.

Keep to the right; pass left. (Call out “On your left” when passing a cyclist.)

Move completely off the road if stopping for any reason.

Do not ride against the flow of the Tour.

Do not use your cell phone while riding.

Maintain adequate distance between yourself and other cyclists—especially on downhills.

Control your speed and be prepared to slow down for congestion or road hazards.

Keep at least one hand on the handlebars at all times.

Do not wear earbuds or any other form of headphones.

Slow down when approaching a security checkpoint and make sure your complete RIK is visible.

No photos on bridges or their access points. Your camera may be confiscated.

What to Bring

Cash for spare parts, parking, food and merchandise at the Finish Festival, etc.

Photo identification—you may be asked to show it.

Cell phone

Water bottles (You can refill them at rest areas and water stations along the route.)

Weather-appropriate clothing (Be sure to check the forecast.)

Sunscreen

Sunglasses

An extra bike tube; make sure they’re the correct size with the correct valve—either Presta or Schrader.
Patch kit in case of a flat

Finish Festival: The Finish Festival at Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island is closed to the public. By the time you reach the Finish Festival at Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island, you will have conquered five boroughs and five bridges—including the longest bridge span in the Americas. Kick back and relax. You’ve earned it.

Ten years ago, on April 16th, 2006, NYCBikeMaps.com launched as New York City’s first interactive bike map.

Admittedly, it was slow loading, prone to crashing and incomplete, but it harnessed the power of Google Maps to help cyclists navigate the City as interest in cycling began to grow rapidly and the City increased investment in cycling infrastructure.

Looking back, it is incredible to see the progress that has been made: since 2006, more than 500 miles of new bike lanes and bike paths were added to New York City’s streets while the number of people cycling nearly tripled. The cycling community in New York City is robust, resilient and it is an honor for NYCBikeMaps.com to be a part of it.

Looking forward, it is exciting what New York City can achieve if momentum is maintained, Vision Zero becomes more than a political slogan and streets are designed for people.

Recent NYPD actions and lawsuits from powerful people indicate there is a ton of work still to be done, but support for cycling infrastructure is strong and more New Yorkers are cycling than ever before, so it is a great time to grab a bike and go for a ride.

A huge thanks is due to more people and organizations than can be thanked individually, but here are a few:

The 1,750,000 people who have visited NYCBikeMaps.com and collectively viewed our maps more than 5 million times

Transportation Alternatives for their tireless work advocating for bicycling, walking and public transportation

StreetsBlog for their non-stop coverage of the NYC cycling ecosystem

Google for providing the Google Maps API, a steady stream of traffic from search and a nice call out a decade ago during the Summer of Green initiative

Gothamist for frequent coverage of cycling in NYC, as well as being the very first website to link to NYCBikemaps.com

Janette Sadik-Khan and Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who together ushered in a sustained period of growth in NYC cycling infrastructure

The NYC DOT for building out the bicycle network and providing detailed printed bike maps

CitiBike for bringing bike share to NYC

Vaccaro and White for providing legal representation to cyclists

Why We Ride
Bike the Boros: Staten Island is a chance to experience New York City’s southernmost — and most bucolic — borough as never before. Saddle up for this adventure through the hills, shores and byways of Staten Island. Whether you choose the half-century (50-mile) route or the 35 miler, you’ll get the satisfaction of taking life by the handlebars. And, with every revolution of your pedals, you’ll help usher in the era of Vision Zero: zero deaths or serious injuries in traffic in every corner of New York City. That means safer streets for you and yours!
Ride With Us
If you enjoyed Transportation Alternatives’ popular Tour de Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island series, you’ll love our revamped Bike the Boros series. It’s built on the same premise — celebrate NYC streets by biking on them with gusto — and with even more fun and forethought! Bike the Boros is designed to introduce you to the life-saving work we’re doing on NYC streets as you pedal them with a few thousand of your new best friends.
