CUNY and IBM team up to open unique school in NYC - NEW YORK (AP) - The City University of New York and IBM will open a unique school that merges high school with two years of college, allowing students to earn an associate's degree, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday in announcing a series of ambitious educational initiatives.

Those students will be "first in line for a job at IBM," Bloomberg said in his announcement, made on MSNBC. - More Here.

Middle School may be Detrimental to NYC Students

A new study of New York City public school students suggests that moving to middle school can be more detrimental to students’ continued academic progress than staying in a K-8 school.

According to the study, which was posted online by the journal Education Next, students who move from elementary school to middle school experience a bigger dip in mathematics and language arts achievement than their K-8 counterparts do, and they tend to be absent more often. Read more here.

Best New York Sidewalk Cafe | There are many great restaurants with sidewalk seating in New York City, and I am obviously only speaking from my limited experiences.

Bistro Ten18's sidewalk seating has a great view of the Cathedral. The wait staff at Bistro Ten18 are incredibly knowledgeable. They always suggest the perfect wine for the always original daily specials. We love sitting out front, drinking wine and watching the people go by at Bistro Ten18.

I love the easy steaks, and skirt steak is definitely easy. But I love when I find someone that does it the best. The absolute best Skirt Steak on the Upper West Side goes to Thai Market. Thai Market is awesome dining in or delivery/takeout. They have the stickiest, most delicious rice (Thai Hom Mali Rice) I've found. Goes perfect with the Skirt steak and bok choy. Also try their starter called the Thai Market Crepe. It's served with a perfect cilantro compote, which by the way, also goes well with the skirt steak... so get extra.

My wife an I love the Sangria, and we have had a few different types of Sangria. Last night we were drinking Salam's Pomegranate Sangria. We got a pitcher of it and drank it up. It was easier to drink than Gatorade. We left Salam's with a perfect buzz. Salam's serves Middle eastern cuisine... but I cant say if its good or bad as we didn't eat anything on our visit. If they invite us back then I will gladly post a review of our dinner. :) If the food is as good as their Sangria, then I'm sure it's fantastic.

Best Teriyaki Chicken in NYC

The best Teriyaki Chicken in NYC, in my opinion is at Ozen. I understand that there really isn't anything special about this dish, but I've loved it as long as I can remember, and Ozen's way is as good as I've seen. The chicken is juicy, the sauce is perfect and the vegetables that accompany are steamed perfectly. I take white rice, but they do have really good brown rice as well. They are an Asian fusion restaurant, and everything we have ordered has been great.

The shredded pork w/ green bean is also good. I've never gone to Ozen, I've only ordered delivery. Ozen's delivery is always fast and proper. Out of the many deliveries we have placed, 100% of them have been hassle free.

That's what I said after I ate a sandwich from Buster's Cafe - UWS location. The sandwich I got is called the Buster Brown. The Buster Brown is black forest ham, artichoke hearts roasted red peppers, and Havarti. Artichoke hearts on a sandwich is something I've never thought of, but it's nice and good, good n' nice.

New reports have NYC Tourism Sliding a bit. New York Restaurants are a big reason New York City's tourism is large. It is easy to see how fast a sinking economy affects an industry such as this one. Not only do NY restaurants have to deal with its neighbors cutting back on their eating out budgets, they are also seeing less tourists. Only the strong restaurants or the restaurants who successfully evolve to the current situation will survive.

Chop't in New York, specializes in salads... as their name indicates. I was impressed to find that Chop't organically washes every salad ingredient and then completely dries the ingredients before they put them in your salad made to order. Most salads cost less than $10; all are individually tossed to order.

Chop't has seasonal specials, which change every 60 days, such as the “Detox Club”. It’s made from mesclun, shredded red cabbage, carrots, radishes, cucumbers, Granny Smith apples, pumpkin, and sunflower seeds. The Detox dressing uses lemon, olive oil, cayenne pepper, and maple syrup. All the salad ingredients are, as the New York Post says, “maniacally hacked into bite size pieces” by employees using “the curved blade of a mezzaluna.”

Mobys Restaurant Burned Down

Moby's Vegan restaurant, TeaNY on the Lower East Side of New York burned down last week Thursday. June 18th
The Teany restaurant - which the producer / DJ co-owns with his former girlfriend Kelly Tisdale - was hit by flames on Thursday evening (June 18).
Moby said that thankfully no one was hurt and that Kelly is working hard to reopen the vegan restaurant as soon as possible. But I checked today and the web site is shut down...

Israeli Gelato Upper West Side

Israel’s largest gelato company, Aldo has opened a store on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. They are offering old favorites like its delicious signature, Belgian Waffle flavor. They also offer American versions of Israeli favorites at their NYC store. The American store is called Screme and is generating a lot of buzz. They are located on Broadway between 69th and 70th.

Excess Salt Ban in New York Restaurants

First, there was a ban on the trans fats. Then calories were posted on menus. Now the New York City health department is fighting excess salt.

About 3/4 of the salt New Yorkers eat come from prepared and processed food. You would think that it would come from the salt we add. That is exactly why NY officials want the food industry to help cut back.

The food industry has already been making cuts to salt in processed foods, or at least offering a lower sodium option. New York officials are talking with Campbell Soup's people on exactly how we can steadily reduce salt in all food sold in NYC. Changing how things operate in New York City gradually affects things across the country and then the world.

Some salt is necessary in a diet but most of us get twice as much as we should get. Too much salt can contribute to high blood pressure, which is the source of many health problems.

Manhattan Restaurants

A recent Wall Street Journal article estimates that Manhattan, New York has 300 to 400 Top Tier Restaurants. That is compared with 30 or so for Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles respectively. The article was written by Joseph Epstein and can be read in its entirety here.

Epstein feels that the ratio gap between cities is so large because of how demanding New Yorkers are. I don't know about all that. I feel that it surely has a little to do with the demanding locals, but I think the main reason Manhattan has such a huge amount of killer restaurants is simply competition. There is nowhere like New York. New York's tourism is almost completely centered around its Manhattan restaurants. there is always a new restaurant doing things a little different. The constant competition in such close proximity has driven the quality perpetually higher and higher.

Manhattan Restaurant Fredericks Bankrupt

The Manhattan restaurant, Frederick's Madison at 768 Madison Ave between 65th and 66th streets has filed for bankruptcy. Frederick’s downtown is still up and running. Frederick's Downtown is located at 637 Hudson st. NY, NY.
They join a growing list of upscale Manhattan restaurants that have either had to go bankrupt or cut corners in service and quality. I'm sure that riding this economic downswing is difficult as they have to survive financially while maintaining their reputation. That would take some creative thinking.

Blockheads Mexican Bull Dog

Last night we ate at the Upper West Side location of Blockheads. (951 Amsterdam - @ 106 street - 212.662.4919)
I had the tacos and a couple Mexican Bull Dogs. The Mexican Bulldog (In picture) may look like a Frat Boys dream drink, but it is actually delicious. The Mexican Bull Dog is a frozen margarita with an upside down, ice cold corona sticking out the top. As you drink, you allow more corona in to the margarita. The waitress suggested including a shot of sangria in mine. It was a good suggestion.
Blockheads does a good job at feeling like a local restaurant even though they are a chain. The food is always delicious and the atmosphere is chill. They have played decent house music every time I've eaten there.
