Welcome to the New York Flyers RSS feed. All data contained in this data feed is updated at least weekly.
The New York Flyers was founded in 1989, with the goal of establishing a running club open to individuals of all athletic abilities and experience levels. In 1991, the Club's objectives were expanded to embrace multi-sport activities, such as duathlons and triathlons. We are currently the largest running club in New York, with over 600 runners, duathletes and triathletes
The Flyers are the New York Road Runners' official pace leaders for the New York City Marathon training runs. In addition, our social and charitable activities include training runs in the Palisades, the Hood to Coast relay, and the annual Toys for Tots run.
You can find out more about the New York Flyers on the team's website.

FLYER NEWS FLASH - 08 Nov 2009 10:56:58

From the website that thinks rest is overrated. . .

Time for a deep, cleansing breath

While Philly runners are gearing up for their big event in two weeks, New York City Marathon competitors (except for the crazy individuals double-dipping at Philly) are taking some much-deserved rest. This was a points race but times won't be official until November 16, so I can't tell you how we did relative to other teams just yet.

The results page is showing up wonky in two browsers on my PC, so I can't tell you much about how our most stellar individuals ran either, but according to

what Chrome deigned to show me, Steve Kasarsky notched an eighteenth place finish in the 55-59 age group in 3:12:48 (7:22 pace), and Chris Morgenroth knocked out ninth in the 45-49 age group in 3:16:42. We also had one sub-3:00 finish, achieved by Michael Hirsch with a 2:54:35 finish (6:40 pace). Congratulations to both our male and female superstars, and more full results when I can get them. In the meantime, if you have a story of your own to share, make sure you get it on the Flyers Blog by sending your story via email to Vice President Lara Kail.

Song for the unsung heroes

Very special thanks and appreciation to the photographers on the scene for the New York City Marathon: Memories of the day (and maybe a few things you don't want to remember) were captured and posted courtesy of hardworking photographers Bob Cowin, Cheryl Spinner, Derek Rose, Rob Butler, Sandy Altman, and Richard Brounstein. We really appreciate all your hard work and dedication.

Driven

The holiday season is upon us, but it won't be a happy holiday season for some New Yorkers without your help. For the second year in a row, the Flyers are partnering with the Food Bank for the City of New York to raise $3500 in donations for the needy between now and the Flyer Holiday Party. This year, instead of both fundraising and collecting food, we're focusing solely on

fundraising. You can help brighten the holidays by making a tax-deductible donation via our Virtual Food Drive. You can also find more background information on what we're doing and why right here.

When the occasion arises, will you rise to the occasion?

Club election season is upon us, and nominations are now open for the roles of President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Member at Large. Anyone who is a Flyer in good standing is eligible to run, and you can nominate yourself or as many other people as you want. This is your chance to choose who you want to shape the club in 2010, so let your voice be heard! Check the nominations page for the election schedule, role descriptions, and other important election news.

Even better than men in tights

Check Monday's New York Post for a photo shoot featuring our very own Pat Duffy, who recently completed an Off-Off-Broadway stint skirling through the mists of Brigadoon, in full kilt and bagpipe regalia. No word yet on whether he managed to sneak the Flyer logo into the shoot, but take a look tomorrow just in case.

Philly is just around the corner

Philly marathoners, Dave Kleckner is organizing dinner the night before. If you're running in Philly and haven't heard from Dave yet, shoot him an email if you want to join in on the fun.

A glorious day to be a Flyer

Results are still coming in from the 2009 New York City Marathon, but we already know that there were PR's and BQ's a-plenty. I spotted Scott Cohen, John Whitfield, Pat Duffy, Iris Chen, Isabel Johnston, Janet Hanson, Madame President, Karen Merz, and Vicky Tiase all looking strong and steady at mile 22, and I learned by skulking around the reunion area afterwards that Janet, Madame President, and Chris Morgenroth all qualified for Boston, with Madame President and Chris setting powerful PR's in the process. Points race writeup to come; in the meantime, thank you to all the wonderful Flyer volunteers who helped make the race so very special.

I may not win the marathon, but I'll probably beat you to the bar

Volunteers, runners, and Flyer spectators alike: Get your sneaks back on and run right on down to the post-marathon party, from 4:00 until they kick us out.

Well, sign me right up

On Saturday, I overheard several women discussing the Nike Women's Half Marathon. One explained, It's the best race you'll ever do because every finisher gets a Tiffany necklace AND a fireman!.

We got game

We got press, too: Yet another excellent New York Times writeup, this time of our Last Ten Miles Run. Thanks to Jens Hewerer for the link.

Aren't you glad this one was on Sunday instead of Saturday?

Mother Nature cut everyone a break for the Poland Springs Five Miler by diverting Saturday's torrential downpour elsewhere. The Flyer women distinguished themselves with a second place team finish,

and Michelle Reeves kicked it out with a first place team finish, fourth Flyer overall, and fourteenth in the 30-34 age group in 36:12 (7:14 pace). Alysia Lew and Margaret Blake took second and third for the team

in 36:21 (7:16 pace and eighteenth in the 30-34 age group), and 37:30 (7:30 pace). Kate McKeown blasted across the finish line in fourth place for the Flyers in 38:13 (7:38 pace), and Jennifer Coyne wrapped it up with a bow on top

in 38:27 (7:41 pace and sixteenth in the 40-44 age group).

In the men's race, Drew Guthrie took a swashbuckling first place for the Flyers and fourteenth in the 40-44 age group in 32:46 (6:33). John Whitfield and Paul Pasternak crossed the finish line in a shootout for second and third, separated by a mere second in

34:49 (6:57 pace) and 34:49 (6:57 pace). Fabrice Boucher knocked out a solid fourth place finish in 35:36 (7:07 pace), and Veteran runner Walt Looney clocked in as the fifth male Flyer and thirteenth in the 55-59 age group in 36:18 (7:15 pace). Age group honors also went to Marisa Harris for a seventh place finish in the 65-69 age group.

If I sit on my butt and just think about running, does that count?

I don't exactly know what a virtual run is, but anyway there's one hither.

Slow off the mark

Apologies to Papa Bear for the delay on posting his race report for the Harry Murphy 5K, held on October 11. We are proud to present it forthwith:

It was a beautiful day at Van Cortlandt Park. Temperatures were 58 (as opposed to 71 at last week's race and 79 at the season opener on August 30.) and this brought some good fimes for one and all. I saw David Toung and Melissa Chase and it turns out we were the only Flyers there. I managed a second place in my age group only two steps and one second ahead of the next man in my age group, which was unknown to me when I passed him in the last few seconds. It just shows you should run like hell and not try to figure out who's in what age group. David and Melissa were both sixth in their groups and all agreed it was simply a great day to be there. It turns out there was a kids race and a college race going on at the same time so the park was just full of runners. Even the No. 1 train was running on time, so who could ask for more.

Can the last 10 miles be your best 10 miles?

We're less than 14 days and counting to the NYC Marathon. Flyers were out in masses on a rainy Sunday morning running the last 10 miles of the marathon. This was more important this year because, for the first time in years, the NYC Marathon course has changed.

Island time

In the fifth and final event of the NYRR Grand Prix Half Marathon Series, a hardy group of Flyers marched across bridges and water (and in a few cases, not too many streets away from home) for the Staten Island Half Marathon. The Flyer women scored a solid second place finish in their division,

and Shirling Tsai took a powerful early lead and held it for the duration of the race. She finished first for the team, fourth overall for the Flyers, eighth in the 30-34 age group, and twenty-first woman overall in 1:32:59 (7:05 pace).

Deanna Culbreath came in second for the team and fourteenth in the 25-29 age group in 1:36:12 (7:20), followed by Staten Islander Kelley Santamaria, who placed third for the team and sixth in the

40-44 age group in 1:37:05 (7:24 pace). Janet Hanson scored an impressive seventh in the 45-49 age group and fourth for the Flyers in 1:48:20 (8:16 pace), and Monique Hoogenboom captured tenth in the

45-49 age group and fifth for the Flyers in 1:49:42 (8:22 pace).

In the men's race, Leslie Lam coasted to a first place Flyer finish in 1:24:25 (6:26 pace), followed by DJ Van Hoogstraten in 1:27:55 (6:42 pace and twentieth in the 40-44 age group).

Andreas Werder captured top honors as the second-place finisher in the 55-59 age group as well as taking third for the Flyers in 1:30:48 (6:55 pace). Brett Saffer clocked in for fourth in 1:38:44 (7:32 pace), pursued by Tom Baxter, who

wrapped up the team points in 1:39:03 (7:33 pace).

Well, missed that one

Did you know there was a cross country race last Sunday? Three Flyers did, and they made their way up to Van Cortlandt Park for the Fred Lebow Cross Country 5K. Amy West and Sheila Qiu represented for the women,

finishing first and second for the team, second in the 35-39 age group and third in the 45-49 age group, and twelfth and twenty-fourth women overall in 23:02 (7:25 pace) and 24:36 (7:56 pace).

Geoff Wells proudly sported his Y chromosome as the first and only Flyer male to race, crossing the finish line in 25:22 (8:10 pace), taking seventh in the 55-59 age group.

At the risk of distressing marathon appetites

If you've been saving up your manky shoes for donation, wait no longer: Dave Kleckner and Diane Zinn will be collecting gently used running shoes for Soles 4 Soles at the Marathon Pasta Party.

A good day to be a cabbie

If you're worried about getting to the Staten Island Ferry on time for the New York City Marathon, check the new Taxi Share Board for carpooling buddies. Your wallet will thank you for it.

Grey is the new black

Thanks to photographer Bob Cowin and photoshaper Andreas Stresemann, not to mention our lovely spokesmodel Madame President, you can see a preview of the new grey twentieth anniversary Flyers/fortieth anniversary New York City Marathon celebration shirt in the Online Store. http://milwaukeelakefrontmarathon.blogspot.com/The Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon is a wonderful small marathon (capped at 2300) held in early October. I ran this one in 2006. It is well organized with lots of community support and a beautiful, gently-rolling course.
