Welcome to the New York Flyers RSS feed. All data contained in this data feed is updated at least weekly.
The New York Flyers was founded in 1989, with the goal of establishing a running club open to individuals of all athletic abilities and experience levels.
FLYER NEWS FLASH - 13 Jul 2009 08:42:07

From the website that believes: "I get email...therefore I am"

Nice Long Training Run

Now we are most thankful for the unseasonable cool weather. OK, this weekend was hot and humid and not one that makes you say "I just wanna run 20 miles right now". But it was still cooler than average and I for one was glad for that by the second loop. I'm referring of course to the Long Training Run #1 for which the Flyers did an excellent job pace leading. There are too many Flyers to mention but you know who you are and we are most thankful for being out there and keeping everyone on pace. Also, I know there are thousands of runners training for their marathons who are also most thankful. Long Training Run #2 is right around the corner so please don't hesitate to sign up. We really need you.

Some people can get faster during the Recession

Check out this WSJ article entitled Fast Times for Jobless Runners about how some people are posting their best running times ever in this economy. Maybe it is a coincidence. Thanks to Francine Alfandary for the link.

Independent

In celebration of Independence Day, there were no NYRR races this weekend. We hope you had some well-deserved R&R in preparation for weeks of fun-filled Flyer events. First up is the West Side TGIFF on Friday night. On Tuesday, July 14, come out and get some culture (whether you want it or not) at the Flyer Philarmonic Picnic. The picnic is sandwiched (mmmm. . . sandwiches. . . ) between two free BRiX classes led by our own Scott Cohen, one on Tuesday and one on Thursday. On Saturday, July 18, Heather Marcellis will take you on safari with a shovel on behalf of the Central Park Conservancy, and the following morning brings with it sunshine (we hope) and a trip to Van Cortlandt Park as part of the Marathon Training Program.

I'll be on vacation from Friday night through the following week, so I'll leave you in Richard's capable hands for the next couple of weeks. See you on the flip side, and hopefully the place won't burn down while I'm gone.

Hopeful

Thanks in part to weather that actually borders upon being seasonable, thirty-four Flyers turned out for the Achilles Hope and Possibility 5-Miler on Sunday. There were no team awards as awards are judged largely on the basis of categories of relative mobility, but

we'll show you the top five men and women Flyers anyway just because we can. In the men's race, Pat Duffy scored first for the team, second in the 45-49 age group, and twenty-third man overall in 30:34 (6:06 pace).

Gordon Roble knocked out a steady second place finish for the Flyer men in 35:18 (7:03 pace), followed by longtime Flyer Steve Kasarsky in 36:13 (7:14 pace and third in the 55-59 age group).

Steven Berger took fourth for the team in 28:29 (7:41 pace), and Ontario Flyer David Crossley flew in for a visit, fifth for the team, and seventh in the 60-64 age group in 38:30 (7:42 pace).

In the women's race, Shirling Tsai captured first for the team, second in the 30-34 age group, and nineteenth woman overall in 34:33 (6:54 pace). Nicole Mallory crossed the finish line for second, also

finishing seventh in the 30-34 age group in 36:13 (7:14 pace). Jennifer Zogg was close behind in 37:05 (7:25 pace and ninth in the 30-34 age group), and Kristina Hornberger made

it four in a row for the Open women in 38:07 (7:37 pace and eleventh in the 30-34 age group). Jaime Lorenzo made it a sweep for the thirty-something women with a seventeenth place finish in the 30-34 age group in 40:20 (8:04 pace)

Proud

The interminable rain also let up long enough this weekend for a strong turnout at the Gay Pride 5 Miler. Sean Johnson started the Flyer men out with a bang in 31:13 (6:14 pace and 9th in the

35-39 age group.) Eduardo Fajardo blasted across the finish line for a second place team finish, plus fifth in the 45-49 age group in 31:57 (6:23 pace). Jordan Hare came in shortly thereafter for third,

finishing in 32:32 (6:31 pace and twenty-fifth in the 30-34 age group). DJ Van Hoogstraten knocked out a fourth place team finish and eleventh in the 40-44 age group in 32:50 (6:34 pace), and Samuel Eisenstein

wrapped up the team points in 33:120 (6:38 pace).

In the women's race, it was time to shine for the thirty-somethings: Merisa Titlow called first for the team and first in the 30-34 age group in 32:25 (6:41 pace), followed by Cheryl Spinner in 36:13 (7:14 pace and seventh in the 30-34 age group).

Kristina Hornberger double-dipped with two races in two days to take third for the team in 38:10 (7:38 pace and seventeenth in the 30-34 age group). Taking a stand for the Master women, Sheila Qiu took fourth for the team and twelfth in the 45-49 age group

in 39:46 (7:57 pace), and Cheryl Pientka eased in for fifth in 40:50 (8:10 pace and twenty-second in the 40-44 age group). Other notabe age group scores included Dave Kleckner (thirteenth,

men's 45-49 age group); Peter Levine (fourth, men's 65-69 age group); Joe Jones (eighteenth, men's 50-54 age group); Donna Lopiccolo (tenth, women's 50-54 age group); and Laurie Harris (eighth, women's 55-59 age group);

Groupies

For all of you early birdies, Secretary Lisa Scheerer is leading a new 6:00 a.m. group run that starts from Engineer's Gate. We also need one or more new leaders for the Wednesday evening group run, as Dan and Lisa Guttman are departing New York for greener fields near Boston (close to the marathon start, if I'm not mistaken). If you're interested in

becoming a group leader, please contact Member at Large Dorian D'Angelo. For the full current group schedule, look hither.

Lead, follow, or bring me a sandwich

Once again, the Flyers are pace-leading for the New York City Marathon Long Training Runs. This is a great opportunity to get some long runs in while helping out your fellow fall marathoners, and you don't need to run a full twenty miles to do it.

Arches and Bridges and Father's Day

Despite the rainy weekend, the Flyers were out in Central Park. On Saturday, Andreas Stresemann and Scott Swanay led a large group through an informative and historic tour of the bridges and arches in Central Park

during our annual Bridges and Arches Run

On Sunday, during a consistent downpour while running the Father's day 5-Miler, Chris Webster came in as the first Flyer male in 30:27 (6:05 Pace) followed by Giancarlos Zambrano in 30:35 (6:07 pace) and the Laminator, Leslie Lam finishing in 31:12 (6:14 pace).

Flyer Women we led by Christine Morgenroth who finished in a fabulous 33:13 (6:38 pace) taking 2nd in the 40-44 age group.

A big New York welcome back to our former speedwork coach, now happily retired with Susanne in <strike>Vermont</strike> Florida. (Thank, you, Andreas Stresemann.)

The dash without the splash

Water? We don't need no steeeeeenkin' water. The Flyers proved that a dash without a splash can make a splash nevertheless, as both the Flyer men's and women's teams picked up third-place team finishes in the NYRR Dash 10K.

Michael White came on the scene with a first place finish for the Flyer men, plus fifteenth overall and third in the 25-29 age group in 26:09 (5:49 pace). Giancarlos Zambrano made it in for

second for the Flyers and ninth in the 25-29 age group in 29:18 (6:20 pace). John Whitfield and Ken Marks represented for the Master me, taking fourth and fifth for the team and eleventh and thirteenth in the 45-49 age group in

42:08 (6:47 pace) and 42:53 (6:55 pace). Samuel Eisenstein brought home the rest of the team points in 43:54 (7:04 pace).

In the women's race, Yael Michaeli clocked in with a first place team finish and twentieth in the 30-34 age group in 48:33 (7:49 pace). Secretary Lisa Scheerer and Victoria

Kyle took second and third in 51:07 (8:14 pace) and 52:27 (8:27 pace), and Katie Brown and Yvette Auyeung made it in for fourth and fifth in 53:48 (8:40 pace) and 54:08 (8:43 pace). Other age group honors went to our indomitable Veteran and Senior Veteran men and women. The honors list included Daniel Marks (seventh in the 50-54 age group), Michael Serrano (tenth in the 55-59 age group), Peter Levine (fifth in the 65-69 age group), Donna Lopiccolo (seventh in the 50-54 age group), Laurie Harris (seventh in the 55-59 age group), Marjorie Kos (second in the 60-64 age group), and Maria Harris (seventh in the 65-69 age group).

Off and running

The Flyer Marathon Training Program, organized by Glen Wiener and Brian Hsia, started with a bang and some very good press from the New York Times. Keep an eye on ye friendly Events Calendar as the training season progresses so that you can join in on the many runs and activities being planned as part of the fall marathon buildup.

Who is Randall and why does he have his own island?

The Tuesday Night Speed Series results at Randall's island are in.

Rambling

Last weekend, a group of Flyers eschewed the Mini for a somewhat wilder running extravaganza. Papa Bear was there, and here's his report:

On Sunday, a small group of Flyers forsook Central Park for the shady lanes and uncrowded running conditions of the Riverdale Ramble. It was hot and hilly, but it was also one of the best small town races in the area with superb support and planning by the host Van Cortlandt Park Track club, whose own members volunteered in lieu of running in their own race. There were 176 finishes and the 8 Flyers among them made a strong showing.

Most impressive was Melissa Filut's 3rd place overall finish (47:46), in spite of a recent non-running injury and never before having seen hills like those in Riverdale. See this link for a picture of a happy Melissa. Brett Saffer (47:39) made a very strong showing as well, finishing fourth in the 30-30 age group, only fourteen seconds out of the money. Rick Purdy (49:04) finsihed shortly thereafter and Richard Garland (57:35) had a five minute improvement on this tough course. John Halpin (58:21) had a strong come back race in his first 10K in over three years and Susan Snyder (61:35) improved her best time on the course by almost a minute and like Brett, was fourth in her age group, just nine seconds out of the money. Norma Harris finished her first Ramble with the words "Hills, Hills, Hills. Love em!!", and new Flyer and first time Rambler Cheryl Lawrence completed the Flyer contingent.

After the race there was a barbecue at the nearby Mr. McGoo's Pub (I kid you not, see the photo), where the beer and burgers were on the house.

Looking for an occasional change from crowded Central Park races? Try something in the outer boroughs. See you next year in Riverdale!

Bionic women

Despite some heat and a fair amount of humidity, Sunday's NYRR New York Mini 10K was an impressive spectacle. This one was a money race that drew international elites, and overall first place went to Rose Kosgei of Kenya in a shocking 32:43. It was also a points race for the women and the Flyers turned out in force, many sporting the classy new Nike Flyer Singlet, now available at Urban Athletics.

In the local club competition, Vicky Tiase scored first for the Open Women Flyers and eleventh in the 35-39 age group in 42:48 (6:54 pace). Chris Morgenroth knocked out second for the team in the Open Women's division and first for the team in the Master Women's division in

43:40 (7:02 pace and fifteenth in the 40-44 age group). Shevaun Teevan called third in 45:07 (7:16 pace and twenty-second in the 35-39 age group), amnd Cheryl Spinner came in for fourth in 45:12 (7:17 pace and twenty-first in the

30-34 age group). In the most impressive score of the day, Carrie Barratt triple scored with fifth place for the Flyers in the Open Women's division, second in the Master Women's division, and first in the Veteran women's division as well as fourth overall in the 50-54 age group in

44:16 (7:18 pace).

In the Master Women's division, Iris Chen joined Chris and Carrie in scoring for the team and taking the Flyers to eight place, coming in third for the Flyers in 46:45 (7:32 pace).

The Flyer Veteran Women copped third in their division, with Isabel Johnston crossing the finish line after Carrie for a second place team finish in 52:59 (8:32 pace and ninth in the

55-59 age group), and Monika Gross taking third for the team in 53:30 (8:37 pace and twenty-second in the 50-54 age group). Finally, the Senior Veteran Flyer women captured fourth place in their division, thanks to

Marjorie Kos in 59:22 (9:36 pace and twelfth in the 60-64 age group), Marisa Harris in 1:05:26 (10:33 pace and eleventh in the 65-69 age group), and Ronni Meltzer in 1:14:29 (12:00 pace).

As usual, the Flyer mens were out in droves to support the team. I spotted Jon Bennion and John Blaho doing volunteer work on the course. Bob Cowin, Andreas Stresemann, Richard Brounstein, and I think Nick Jesdanun were snapping photos for posterity, including a really lovely one someone got of me spitting. Jim Nicholas, Joe Jones, Brian Mayor, Pat Duffy, Mike Morgenroth, Leslie Lam, Jordan George, and many, many others whom I heard but didn't quite see all came out to cheer for the team, which was deeply appreciated all around. Between the impressive running and the equally impressive support, the Flyers have much of which to be proud.
Ed Altman received the following from Mary Wittenberg: "Thanks so much to you and all the Flyers! We greatly appreciate your assistance! Not only are the pacers quite good at getting the times right - your positive spirit helps keep everyone up. I started with the 7:30s - who were right on through the first lap and I heard they kept it up all the way through. Especially impressive at that pace! Was so good to see you out there with a big huge group around you. You have the tougher pace - with lots of first time marathoners. Thanks for starting them on the right foot. Super job to all - please relay our thanks and congrats." We couldn't have said it better ourselves!

Without the full and enthusiastic participation from the team, we wouldn't be able to pull off this event so successfully.Having said that, I do want to give some special notice to a few Flyers that take on extra responsibilities leading up to and on the day of the event.Jo Ann who, as Rachel noted, does most of the organizing beforehand. Andreas, who get the runners organized, and who created the great and helpful pace signs, and did some duty at the regroup point.Jordan, a first timer, on the mike at the regroup point. And, as noted, ALL the pace leaders, who really make a difference.Again, thanks!
