Welcome to the New York Flyers RSS feed. All data contained in this data feed is updated at least weekly.
The New York Flyers was founded in 1989, with the goal of establishing a running club open to individuals of all athletic abilities and experience levels. In 1991, the Club's objectives were expanded to embrace multi-sport activities, such as duathlons and triathlons. We are currently the largest running club in New York, with over 600 runners, duathletes and triathletes
The Flyers are the New York Road Runners' official pace leaders for the New York City Marathon training runs. In addition, our social and charitable activities include training runs in the Palisades, the Hood to Coast relay, and the annual Toys for Tots run.
You can find out more about the New York Flyers on the team's website.

FLYER NEWS FLASH - 22 Dec 2011 16:25:48

And Lara said to the more senior Flyer: "You are not old. You are age graded."

Flyer Women Place at Ted Corbitt 15k

On what was a beautifully chilly morning, but great for running, the Flyer Women again proved their superior running ability. Thanks to Christine Morgenroth finishing in 1:05:01, Elisabeth Alexander finishing in 1:05:08, Andrea Kent finishing in 1:06:48, Lara Kail finishing in 1:11:40, and Elle Green in 1:11:52, the Flyer women finished in 3rd place. Congratulations ladies.

The Flyer men ran their usual fast times led by Eric Friedman breaking an hour with a 57:18 finish, Tim Decker finishing in 1:03:02, and Eduardo Fajardo finishing in 1:03:09.

Congratulations to Andrea Kent for breaking her own Hall of Fame record for a 15k race with a finish time of 1:06:48 breaking her previous record of 1:08:38. Congratulations Andrea.

A somewhat healthier version of SantaCon
Cold temperatures notwithstanding, nearly forty Flyers toed the start line of the Jingle Bell Jog 6K in Prospect Park this weekend. David Vandenberg kicked things off for the men's team with a first place team finish and seventh in the 40-44 age group in 23:12 (6:14 pace).

Gary Smeal executed some awesomeness for the Flyer Veterans, taking second for the team and fist in the 60-64 age group in 26:05 (7:00 pace). Adam Marsh and David White picked up third and fourth for the Flyer men in

26:17 (7:03 pace) and 27:20 (7:20 pace), and William Nealon finished fifth for the team and fourth in the 55-59 age group in 27:35 (7:24 pace).

In the women's race, Katherine Ram placed first for the women Flyers, nineteenth in the 30-34 age group, and finished as the fourth Flyer overall in 26:46 (7:11 pace). Justine Allen and

Sarah Dahl went for second and third for the team in 28:09 (7:33 pace) and 28:23 (7:37 pace and fourteenth in the 40-44 age group). Carla Benton and Jodie Fischer brought it home with a close four-five finish in 28:30 (7:39 pace and thirteenth in the

20-24 age group) and 28:33 (7:40 pace and ninth in the 45-49 age group). Other age group honors went to David Gaines (seventh in the men's 55-59 age group); Katherine Hajjar (sixth in the women's 55-59 age group); and

Steven Estrine (fifth in the men's 70-74 age group).

Hello, winter. Now go away.
The arrival of a for-real temperature drop didn't keep the Flyers away from the annual Holiday Party. Thanks to Julie White and her team of enthusiastic helpers, more than a hundred Flyers gathered in the biggest space we've probably ever had for one of these things at Rockefeller University's Faculty House for food, festivity, and free-flowing alcohol. Guests also went home with a special Flyer mug, but don't worry if you missed it: You can pick one up at February's Awards Gala. If the Holiday Party was any indication of things to come, the Gala will be our most amazing event yet.

Lending a helping hand
Saturday also marked the close of the Flyer Food Drive Fundraiser. We came in at $2372 donated online, and since I know a couple of checks and company matches are yet to come, I suspect our final total will add up to just about our goal of $3000. Thank you from the bottom of our crusty little heart to everyone who took time and a few bucks out of their holiday budgets to help the less fortunate.

Braaaaaaains. . . more braaaaaaaains . . .
Sunday's Join the Voices 5 Miler points race wasn't actually about chasing off zombies, but something far worse: Brain cancer. A large group of Flyers came out to show their support and score points for the team in December's inter-club competition.

There were double and triple scores across the board, with three of the thirteenth place Flyers in the Open Men's division also locking down seventh place in the Master Men's division. Pat Duffy led the team with a triple score, finishing first for the Flyers in the Open, Master, and

third place Veteran Men's Flyer teams as well as ninth in the 50-54 age group in 30:00 (6:00 pace). Leslie Lam finished second for the team and just two seconds behind Pat, also taking fifteenth in the 35-39 age group in 30:02 (6:01 pace).

Sean Johnson and Eduardo Fajardo captured third and fourth for the Flyer Open Men and second and third for the Flyer Master Men, in 30:48 (6:10 pace and eighteenth in the 40-44 age group) and

31:50 (6:22 pace and fifteenth in the 50-54 age group). Eduardo also placed second for the team in the Veteran Men's division. Tim Decker finished up the Open Men's team points in 32:22 (6:29 pace). John Whitfield

closed the deal for the Flyer Veteran men in the meantime, finishing third for the team and twentieth in the 50-54 age group in 32:57 (6:36 pace).

In the women's races, the double and triple scores continued. The ninth place Flyer Open Women's team also represented the majority of the third place Flyer Master women and the second place Flyer Veteran Women.

Elizabeth Alexander and Chris Morgenroth came in for a one-two finish in 33:48 (6:46 pace and nineteenth in the 30-34 age group) and 33:53 (6:47 pace and second in the 45-49 age group). Chris also placed first for the Flyer Master Women.

Andrea Kent picked up third for the Flyer Open Women and second for the Flyer Master women as well as first for the Flyer Veteran Women in 34:14 (6:51 pace and fifth in the 50-54 age group).

Vicky Tiase followed up with fourth place finish for the Flyer Open Woemn in 34:48 (6:58 pace and ninth in the 35-39 age group), and Shevaun Teevan clocked in for a fifth place

Flyer Open Women's finish in 35:22 (7:05 pace and twelfth in the 35-39 age group).

Nina Parks-Taylor closed up the Flyer Master Women's competition with a third place finish, also taking second for the Flyer Veteran Women in 35:27 (7:06 pace and eighth in the 50-54 age group). Carrie Barratt

did the same with a third place finish for the Flyer Veteran Women in 37:04 (7:25 pace and eleventh in the 50-54 age group). There wasn't a qualifying team for the Flyer Senior Veteran Men today, but the Flyer Senior Veteran women represented with a sixth place finish in their division.

Martha Millard set the pace with a 46:00 finish (9:12 pace and tenth in the 60-64 age group), followed by Marisa Harris in 55:02 (11:01 pace and twentieth in the 65-69 age group) and

Karen Kenney in 1:06:43 (13:21 pace). Other age group honors went to Andreas Werder (ninth, men's 55-59 age group); Gary Smeal (ninth, men's 60-64 age group); and Janine Smith (tenth, women's 45-49 age group).

Running for Africa
Meanwhile, Sunday was also the inauguration of the Shoe4Africa 5K race. Facebook informs me that

Maria Dunn, Haidee Bowles, Jamey Allen, Drew Guthrie, Tim Decker, Dave Kleckner, and Bob Cowin came out to anoint the course with genuine Flyer sweat, and that Jo Ann Mannino and Janet Stafford graciously volunteered their time and energy to make it all happen. We should also note that it was a double dip for both Tim Decker and Dave Kleckner, each of whom also ran the points race.

Stuffed
It was a glorious weekend in New York, and not just because of family, friends, and lots of food. There were no races on the NYRR calendar, but results are in for the Fred Lebow Cross Country Championships 5K, held on November 20. The Flyers didn't field a full team in either the men's or the women's race, but

the age group finishes for the four Flyer participants are most impressive. Gary Smeal placed first for the team and third in the 60-64 age grup in 23:20 (7:31 pace), followed by Sheila Qiu, who picked up a third place finish in the women's

45-49 age group in 24:23 (7:51 pace). David Toung crossed the line in third place for the Flyers and eleventh in the 50-54 age group in 25:15 (8:08 pace), and David Salkin came in fourth for the Flyers and twentieth in the 40-44 age group in 39:44 (12:49 pace).

Parked
Meanwhile, last weekend the Flyers also took to Central Park for an afternoon of cookies, yardwork, and more cookies in the club's fall Central Park Conservancy Volunteer Day. Thanks and appreciation to Heather Marcellis and Dave Kleckner for organizing the event, as well as to volunteer gardeners Alan Gardner,

Adam Holtz, Anne Halpern, Deb Meyer, Ed Altman, Janet Hanson, Maggie Schwartz, Megan Lareau, Nikita Agrawal, Rachele Armstrong, Richard Brounstein,

Scott Swanay, Shira Zamir, Reyna Franco, Andreas Stresmann, Eric Friedman, Charlotte Pizarro, Luisa Pena, Martha Millard, and Robin Tallant. We are told that Reyna made the observation that Today

was a lot of fun. It is so good to give back to the park. It is our backyard. My suburban friends don't get it, but it is better than their tiny backyards (except they do get to BBQ). We'll scoff a well-done barbequed burger to that.

Support the team. Buy some stuff.

Hats and Brooks singlets are now in stock at JackRabbit, and the new singlets are priced at a low, low $22. Head over there and see them for yourself. It's worth it.
