I’m holding true to my belief that Brady needed seven to eight weeks to find his comfort zone. As the season went on, we noticed the progress Brady made, step by step.

His second half against Buffalo was a complete 180 of the first half. After being blitzed nearly to death against the New York Jets, Brady carved up Atlanta and starred down Baltimore’s Ray Lewis-led defense and came out ahead.

Not happy with his inaccuracy on deep balls against Denver, Brady put on a clinic against Tennessee, throwing six touchdowns and connecting on a handful of passes downfield. And Brady put it all together in London in a sound defeat of Tampa Bay.

What’s with teams not wanting to tackle Cowboy receivers? Miles Austin and Sam Hurd have just been embarrassing defenders left and right. Tony Romo has put his team in a position to take first in the East following their next game, which comes against rival Philadelphia. In Seattle, injuries abound for the second straight year. There is no way this team could fight for a division title.

Austin, 25, an undrafted free-agent from Monmouth University in New Jersey, had eight receptions for 171 yards and two touchdowns as the Cowboys improved their record to 4-2. 

The previous week, Miles established the Cowboys franchise record for receiving yards in game with 250 in a 26-20 overtime win versus the Chiefs in Kansas City and he now has caught 21 passes for 502 yards and five touchdowns to date in this 2009 season. 

Austin was a standout athlete at Garfield High School in the "Garden State" where he lettered in football, basketball and track and field.

Unfortunately for New York (4-3), their dominating triumph came at a great expense.

One week after the Jets lost defensive standout Kris Jenkins for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, offensive sparkplug Leon Washington fractured his right fibula on his first carry of the game.

Washington, 27, a 2008 Pro Bowl and All-Pro selection, had his lower leg snapped when he was tackled by Raiders defenders and the broken bone grotesquely pierced his skin.

“I could see blood spurting out,” said one player of Washington’s compound fracture. “I’ve never seen anything like that before.”

Running back Thomas Jones, who had shared carries with Washington in the backfield to date, said the Jets as a team are demoralized by the loss.

Every once in a while, Houston goes ballistic and puts up mega-points. Matt Schaub once again proves he’s a fantastic fantasy QB… five games a season. The Bengals aren’t an elite team, so you had to expect a letdown eventually after winning four straight. Now they dropped back with Pittsburgh, who are also 4-2, but technically behind since the Bengals beat them head-to-head.

(3-3) Baltimore Ravens 31 

Why won’t anyone beat the Vikings?! Steven Hauschka’s missed 44-yard field goal keeps the legend of Brett Favre in Minnesota going strong for another week. Who thought that the Baltimore defense would be the team’s weakness this season? They don’t deserve to be called “good” with the amount of points they’re allowing. Take that Ray Lewis.

I have loved the swagger and confidence that Rex Ryan has brought to this Jets team with his brash talk, and the ability to back it up.  But this infectious whining is not garnering any respect around the league.  The Dolphins are 2-3, so clearly there are teams who are able to deal with the wildcat offense.  And I wouldn’t call it a gimmick either, seeing as you have at least a thousand plays on tape of this offense.  They can’t do anything out of this formation that you haven’t seen before (except for maybe a

Notre Dame (4-1) currently has a seven-game losing streak to USC (4-1) and they have been humiliated by the Trojans in their last two contests by a combined score of 76-3.  

“I think that our university really, really could use this win,” Notre Dame Head Coach Charlie Weis said in the understatement of this millennium. 

The portly Weis, 53, who was given $40 million and a five-year contract to coach the Irish, has been roundly criticized for the ineptitude he has displayed on the sidelines since he was hired by Notre Dame in 2004. 

Weis, whose Irish are currently ranked #25 in the nation, lost a school record 15 games over a span of two seasons in 2007 and 2008 and he has been defeated in his last six consecutive contests against top-10 teams.

“First off, it was a complete embarrassment by our defense and by me,” said Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan to the New York Daily News. “Obviously, we need to prepare better. I didn’t have the defense prepared the way they should have been, and I take full responsibility for that.”

Ryan, whose hyped defense surrendered a total of 151 yards rushing and allowed Miami to score three touchdowns in the fourth quarter alone, was not finished expressing his utter disgust.

“I’ve been involved in some bad defensive performances, but I’ve never been involved in one as bad as this.”

The Jets invited Mayweather to their practice and he arrived with a slew of his flunkies before he addressed the team.

The main advice Mayweather offered the Jets was to not allow their loss last Sunday to the Saints in New Orleans to hinder their preparation for Monday night’s game against the Miami Dolphins.

“This is my first time coming to an NFL training camp,” said Mayweather, 32, the winner of six world boxing championships in five different weight classes. “I’ve bet enough money on them.”

Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs) endorsed the trade the Jets made this week to acquire disgruntled wide receiver Braylon Edwards from the Cleveland Browns and he predicted that Gang Green are legitimate contenders to win the Super Bowl this year.

With some downright horrendous match-ups this weekend, this edition of the Opening Drive is shorter than usual. Just writing about Cleveland versus Buffalo would put me to sleep. Let’s get things going with the most anticipated games of week four! 

Cincinnati Bengals (3-1) at Baltimore Ravens (3-1) 

While it’s way too early for the winner of this game to be named AFC North champion, it will give one team a sizeable advantage. If the Bengals can pull off the victory, there will be no questions as to their legitimacy. Unfortunately, they’re facing a Ravens squad that is fuming after their loss to the Patriots last week. Ray Lewis and that swarming defense will try to make a statement at the expense of their division rival.
