Shot celebrity photos for ACE Pictures

By Daryl Lang, Photo District News

Nov 3, 2009, 02:44 PM ET

Celebrity shooter A.J. Sokalner, admired by his colleagues for his quiet, passionate commitment to photography, collapsed Monday night outside an event in New York and died a short time later, according to his agency.

Sokalner was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital, said Philip Vaughan, owner of ACE Pictures. Vaughan said an emergency worker told him Sokalner had suffered a heart attack.

Sokalner collapsed minutes after entertainer Lady Gaga arrived at the ACE Awards, an event hosted by the Accessories Council at Cipriani on 42nd Street. He was part of a group of about 25 photographers working a rope line outside the venue, according to friend and fellow photographer Dennis Van Tine.

Bring Your Own Work Night - Friday November 6th

Please join the NYPPA at

“Bring Your Own Work” Night

Friday November 6th at 7:30pm “The Change You Want To See” Gallery located at 84 Havemeyer Street (off of Metropolitan Ave) in Brooklyn, NY.

The intent of this evening is to invite you to share your work with fellow NYPPA members to be projected onto a screen. Please choose to show what we would otherwise not have a chance to see in your daily published work. It could be a current project you wish to receive feedback for, personal work, something you produced 20 years ago, or perhaps your wedding work you do on the side. We especially encourage you to share multimedia work you have produced using Final Cut, even if just an experiment, and wish to receive comments. The newsroom no longer is as a place we hang around for a “chat” and this is why we have created BYOW Night.

A REQUIEM: TRIBUTE TO THE SPIRITUAL SPACE AT AUSCHWITZ: PHOTOGRAPHS BY SUSAN MAY TELL September 10 through November 1 - Artist talk Sept. 16, 2009, 7:00pm
While traveling to Prague and Budapest in Eastern Europe, photographer Susan May Tell learned of an overnight train to Krakow, Poland, and from there, a short local train ride to Auschwitz.
She took the opportunity to visit the concentration camp where, she says, "I walked the grounds in silence, in meditation, photographing the aesthetics, the mood, the sense of foreboding - and tried to capture the energy that lives in that space."
A Requiem: Tribute to the Spiritual Space at Auschwitz, a series of her photographs, is featured in the Main Gallery at the Griffin Museum of Photography September 10 through November 1. A reception is September 16, 7-8:30 p.m.

Marty Forscher, Tended Cameras and Owners, Dies at 87

FROM THE NY TIMES: by MARGALIT FOX

Marty Forscher, whose intimate knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the camera — and of the myriad ways in which photographers can unsettle them — made him for decades the most sought-after camera repairman in the country, died on Sept. 30 in Pittsfield, Mass. He was 87 and lived in Pittsfield.
The cause was heart failure, said his wife, Marian Forscher.
For more than 40 years, Mr. Forscher ran Professional Camera Repair Service in Midtown Manhattan. Founded in 1946, the shop was a Mecca for generations of camera owners, from the world’s most celebrated fashion, advertising and news photographers to wedding portraitists, threadbare students, bejeweled celebrities and anxious tourists.

Among the shop’s well-known clients were the photographers Richard Avedon, Joel Meyerowitz, Annie Leibovitz and Mary Ellen Mark.

On behalf of the New York Press Photographers Association I’d like to welcome everyone to the opening of our annual Pictures of the Year exhibit of the winning images from our 74th annual contest.

I am Ray Stubblebine, the president of the NYPPA, and I thank you for joining us tonight in celebration of some new beginnings for our almost 100-year-old organization.

First I want to thank Tim and Robert Forbes for providing us with space to hold our exhibition for the past 10 years, and the financial backing to produce it. And thanks to Bonnie Kirshstein, the Forbes Galleries curator, who had to supervise the preparation and hanging of the exhibit for all of those 10 years. Your generosity and support is so deeply appreciated. And thanks to Todd Maisel, who served as Exhibit Chair for most of those 1o years and worked tirelessly to produce the show, year after year. He deserves to be able to take a break.
