New Lynx Kittens Arrive

Introducing Carson and Lucy

The NEW Zoo is pleased to announce the arrival of two Lynx kittens, Carson and Lucy! Both cats are available for observation in the nursery at the NEW Zoo animal hospital as they are now old enough and strong enough to be in the public eye. Come and check out the kittens’ adorable little faces and huge paws between noon and 3:00pm daily.

Zoo officials are optimistic that the pair will assume residency in their permanent exhibit in future weeks. Carmen Murach, Curator of Animals at the zoo, now transports the kittens to and from the facility as they remain reliant on Murach for scheduled feedings and monitored, overnight care. Murach has honed her mothering capabilities of non-domesticated cats over the past year by having recently hand raised two orphaned African Lion cubs born at the NEW Zoo.

“Adult Lynx have large feet but you will be amazed at the size of Carson’s paws!” stated Murach. “They are adorable and sweet and love attention. They are an absolute hit with staff, volunteers and we’re certain they will be a hit with you too!” said Murach.

Thank You Lee and Kathy Anderson

The acquisition of Carson and Lucy was made possible through a generous donation from Lee and Kathy Anderson, animal lovers and active volunteers here at the facility.

Annual Tortoise Walk

Beginning at 10:00 am

Al and Tootie, the NEW Zoo’s wonderful tortoise couple, are getting ready to make their famous Tortoise Walk back to their summer exhibit outdoors. This is an annual event where the Zoo’s two 27-year old Aldabra Tortoises move from their winter facility to their summer home in the Children’s Zoo area. The event is quite an undertaking in light of the fact that Tootie, the female Aldabra, weighs in at approximately 270 pounds, and Al, the male, tops the scales at a whopping 390 pounds!

Come and encourage our two giants on as they hit the road on a journey which usually takes approximately 45 minutes. The fun will begin at the Children’s Zoo Barn and will culminate at the tortoise exhibit which is located at the entrance to Children’s Zoo area.

The tortoises are one of only a few animals that will see many generations of visitors over their lifetime. Currently, the Zoo is fundraising for a new Adlabra Tortoise Exhibit entitled “Land of the Giants” which will be of unprecedented exhibit design.

North American Aviary Reopens

During your visit, don’t forget to take in the newly renovated North American Aviary which has recently reopened. “The aviary has been closed for almost the entire 2008 season due to major ice storm damage to the exhibit”, Director, Neil Anderson stated. Subsequently, the exhibit has been completely renovated and the North American water fowl and bald eagle have been returned to their new home. “Visitors can expect to see over $200,000 worth of improvements to this exhibit. The North American Aviary is a unique experience for visitors. They are actually immersed into the exhibit with the free flight water fowl and an up close and personal experience with our bald eagle” stated Anderson.

Three Month Old Cubs Make Their Public Debut

After much anticipation, three of the NEW Zoo’s littlest African lion cubs have finally ventured outside to
explore their exhibit, frolic in what remains of the snow and interact with mom, Ajia.

Asani, Akeelah and Jamela can now be seen in their exhibit with Ajia on the weekend. Carmen
Murach, Curator of Animals, hopes to unite Shambe (father) with mom and cubs within the next week.
At that point, the entire pride will be available for viewing.

In a fitting tribute, the three cubs received African names, based in part, on their personalities.

Asani (a male) means ‘rebellious’
Akeelah (a female) means ‘wise’
Jamela (another female) means ‘beautiful’

“The cubs are having a fabulous time exploring the great outdoors and the nice warm weather we have
been experiencing” said Jessica Hutjens, senior zookeeper. “They seem especially interested in checking
out visitors who approach the window in the lion huts for a closer look” said Hutjens.

The NEW Zoo’s older lion cubs, Mandisa and Masamba recently made the journey to their permanent
home at the Naples Zoo in Florida. By all reports, both cubs are adapting to their environment and are
doing very well.

Stop on out and meet the adorable three month old trio! On behalf of all of our creatures, big and
small, we look forward to seeing you soon!

Lion Cubs to Call Naples Zoo “Home”

The NEW Zoo is happy to announce that six month old lion cubs Masamba and Mandisa are headed to their fabulous new home at the Naples Zoo in Florida on Monday, Feb. 2nd, 2009. Because there are only 169 genetically valuable African lions in the captive population, many zoos have been on a waiting list to participate in the breeding program. The lion Species Survival Program has approved the Naples Zoo as the lucky recipients of these cubs.

“We are thrilled to have found a home where the brother and sister team will stay
together until they are old enough (in 2 or 3 years) to be paired with mates and
produce babies of their own” stated Carmen Murach, Curator of Animals at the NEW
Zoo. In the absence of their mother, Murach was instrumental in hand raising the
cubs from birth.

The cubs will be making the trip in the Zoomobile accompanied by NEW Zoo staff.
“Because the cubs were hand raised, they are extremely adaptable, adventurous and
accustomed to new experiences. We expect their transition to their new home to go
very smoothly” said Murach. Stop by yet this weekend to wish Mandisa and Masamba
well before they embark upon their exciting new adventure.

The NEW Zoo’s younger (2 month old) lion cubs, Asani, Akeelah and Jamela
(accompanied by their mother Ajia) are expected to make their public debut in the lion
exhibit this coming week.

Sponsorship Opportunity

Chimpanzee Challenge

The NEW Zoo is currently seeking corporate sponsorship of a new and exciting educational experience. This new experience called the Chimpanzee Challenge is 2000 - 2500 sq. ft. of discovery, exploration, and fun. At the core, it is a giant themed maze. However, you’ll quickly discover there’s much more to it than simply finding your way to the end.

The Experience

Your mission: become a chimp and survive in the wild from infancy to adulthood by answering questions, dispelling myths, and revealing facts about the lives of chimpanzees.

Navigate the winding passageways of a rainforest-themed maze by answering questions and successfully reaching the four life-cycle stages from newborn to twelve-year-old adult. Correct answers lead visitors to three experience galleries that encourage role-play activities and in-depth exploration into the world and behaviors of chimpanzees. Answer incorrectly and discover dead-ends that expose the many threats facing chimpanzees in the wild.

What we need

The zoo is looking for financial support to offset the cost of bringing this wonderful experience to Northeast Wisconsin. We would like to bring this to your NEW Zoo during our peak months, June, July, and August.

For more information contact the NEW Zoo at 920.434.7841 or by email at Fisher_MA@co.brown.wi.us

New Animals at the NEW Zoo

Cougar “BB”

BB, a 7 year old female cougar, came to the NEW Zoo from the Charlestowne Landing Animal Forest in South Carolina. The zoo in South Carolina had rescued BB and another cat from a “backyard breeder” in Georgia where they had been living in a small, muddy enclosure. Now, BB roams happily amid the rocks, grass and trees in our beautiful Wisconsin Trails portion of the Zoo. Be certain to stop by and say “hello” to her as she is a cat who loves attention and will frequently answer!

Snow Leopard “Buster”

Buster, a 5 year old male snow leopard joined the NEW Zoo last week hailing from Potter Park Zoo in Lansing, Michigan. Buster is absolutely beautiful and is looking forward to our colder weather.

Prong Horn “Sundance” and “Medora”

This brother and sister duo came to us from the Great Plains Zoo in South Dakota. Sundance and Medora can be seen intermingling with the bison and elk in our gorgeous Prairie Grassland Exhibit.

African Penguin “Fat Tony” from Jersey

Tony is considered a “mail order groom” for our female African Penguin, Bobbi. The two have quickly fallen in love with Tony-another successful match courtesy of the AZA’s Species Survival Program. We are optimistic that Fat Tony and Bobbi will welcome little ones in the near future.

Curator Report: Lion Cub Update

Masamba and Mandisa are approaching their 3rd month of life and are becoming much more independent. Previously, the Animal Hospital had provided the perfect spot for visitors to get a good look at the cubs. During the first week of October, however, the cubs finally outgrew the nursery! Almost overnight, the young lions became more rambunctious and less willing to take long naps. As they are still too small to safely join the adult lions (who they continue to visit on a daily basis), they are now living in the former Sandhill Crane exhibit (past the llamas, across from the otters) where they can wrestle and play to their hearts content. The satisfaction of seeing well adjusted young lions happy to entertain themselves far outweighs the twinge of nostalgia for their more “cuddly” days!

Although the cubs are now eating the raw ground meat diet that all of our big cats are fed, they still get a bottle in the middle of the day. They no longer insist on a bedtime bottle but Masamba, in particular, really seems to appreciate the soothing effects of a bottle before his afternoon nap. Mother lions typically nurse their babies long after they have begun eating solid food. Nursing not only provides nourishment but is also important for reinforcing a sense of security and safety for the cubs.

The cubs have also taken up a new hobby – painting! It is an extremely messy endeavor but the results are impressive! Their creative artwork raised $1,000 at a recent auction.

Other Zoo News

A pair of Pronghorn from the Great Plains Zoo in South Dakota arrived in late September thanks to a generous donation from the Watermolen Foundation. Sundance and Medora will join the elk and bison in our Prairie Grasslands exhibit as soon as their quarantine period has been completed.

We are expecting the arrival of both a cougar and a snow leopard in the near future. Stay tuned for details!

N.E.W. Zoological Society Announces Official Opening of New Macaque Exhibit

N.E.W. Zoological Society Announces
Official Opening of New Macaque Exhibit

The N.E.W. Zoological Society is proud to announce the Grand Opening of the New Macaque (snow monkey) Exhibit at the NEW Zoo in Suamico on September 16th at 9:00 am.

The Macaque exhibit is made possible by a generous donation from the Elsie Jenquine Estate.

The new monkey house is much larger and provides a new tunnel and living space for the Macaques. In the wild, snow monkeys live in the mountains and hills of Japan. They are recognized by their red face and thick coat. They can live up to 30 years of age in captivity. The Macaques are social animals. They are expressive creatures because of their complex communication process which uses hand signals, body posturing and vocalizations.

The official opening ceremony is open to public with general admission.

Corporate Sponsorship Opportunity for Zoo Boo 2008

The New Zoo is excited to embark on their 16th year of providing a safe Halloween trick or treat alternative for the children of Brown County and surrounding areas by hosting Zoo Boo. This event offers the chance for visitors from all of Northeastern Wisconsin to enjoy their Zoo in a family-related, celebratory way. Equally as important, Zoo Boo the zoo’s largest fundraiser of the year. Thru the success of Zoo Boo, zoo officials are able to continue and even enhance efforts towards conservation, education and recreation year round by offsetting expenses associated with education programs, animal care and husbandry as well as facility related operational costs.

Zoo Boo will be held from 3pm to 8pm and event dates for Zoo Boo 2008 will be the second, third and fourth Fridays and Saturdays in October:

October 10th-11th
October 17th-18th
October 24th-25th

Attendance is estimated to exceed over 20,000 for this three weekend period. In an effort to offset expenses, the NEW Zoo is offering a corporate sponsorship opportunity which would afford naming rights for this incredible event. A corporate sponsor would receive radio, newspaper, television, billboard and magazine exposure.

Now, more than ever, the NEW Zoo needs extraordinary friends and support from organization like yours to solidify our success. Additional information about this opportunity can be obtained by contacting Maria Fisher, Operations Manager at (920) 434-7841 ext. 101.

Sincerely,

Curator Report: New Lion Cubs

We’ve had a traumatic few weeks at the zoo recently. Lioness Ajia gave birth to the NEW Zoo’s first lion cub but, unfortunately the baby did not survive. It is not unusual for first time mothers of many species to not be successful in their first attempt at raising young. Ajia was a very attentive mother but with only one cub to care for, it appears that her over enthusiastic grooming caused a problem. The baby’s umbilical cord did not heal over properly leaving a conduit for infection. Fortunately, Ajia seemed to recover from her loss quickly and has been happy and content back out on exhibit with male lion Shambe.

Lioness Etana gave birth to 3 cubs on 7/9/08. One cub did not survive. Three days after the birth, Etana began having contractions and it became apparent that she had retained an additional cub. This cub was, of course, not alive. An emergency C- section was required to remove the cub. Sadly, after a week and a half of multiple complications from this surgery, it became clear that Etana could not recover and she was humanely euthanized. Her death was an extremely emotional event for all of the staff, volunteers and friends of the zoo who knew her well. This tragedy reminds us that, for many species, childbirth (particularly for first time mothers) is a dangerous endeavor. We take comfort in the fact that we went to extreme measures and did all we could to try to save her.

On a happier note, Etana’s little cubs are strong, healthy and growing fast! The cubs (one boy and one girl) are being bottle raised and seem very well adjusted and happy. They first began play wrestling with each other on their 2 week birthday. Distinct personalities are starting to emerge and the little girl is reminding us more of her mother every day. The babies still require a late night feeding so they come home with me (or one of our fabulous zookeepers if I need a babysitter!) every night. In the morning, before the zoo is open, the cubs go for a visit to their father Shambe and their Aunt Ajia.

Our plan is for all of the lions to know each other well when the time comes for the cubs to join the family. Visitors can see the cute little cubs in the window of our Animal Hospital every day from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm.

Curator Report: New Baby Moose

The wait is over! We’ve seen several significant animal births at the NEW Zoo in the past couple of weeks. Zookeepers discovered the brand new moose calf during their early morning check at 6 in the morning on Memorial Day. Although we didn’t witness the birth, Mom moose, Flo was still busy cleaning the baby when keepers arrived. Zoo staff, volunteers and visitors alike were on hand to witness the little one mastering the art of walking (it’s not easy with those long, gangly legs!). Because Flo is a responsible mother, she is doing a great job of keeping her calf from approaching zookeepers. As a result, we are still not sure of the baby’s sex. Because the calf is obviously healthy, active and thriving, we see no reason to upset the baby (and incur the wrath of Mom!) just to capture it for a closer look! We’ll just need to be patient for a little while longer before we decide on decorating with pink or blue!

Our Trumpeter Swans have also welcomed a new brood into the world. Visitors were able to join proud father swan, Abner in watching the progress of the hatching eggs throughout the day on Tuesday, June 3. Mother swan, Cecelia frequently rose to her feet to supervise the activity below revealing adorable fuzzy cygnets along with their not yet adorable (still wet and slimy!) siblings. By the next morning the bumper crop of 8 cygnets joined mom and dad for a swim in the pond. The NEW Zoo has been working with the Iowa DNR’s Trumpeter Swan Recovery Program for several years to ensure the survival of the species in the wild. The cygnets raised by their parents here are eventually reintroduced into the wild and are helping to save their species from extinction. Several of the swans raised here are now an integral part of the Midwestern wild breeding population.

At the NEW Zoo, we are careful to only breed animals that we know will have good permanent homes either here or at other AZA zoos. Fortunately, we are involved in several captive breeding conservation programs and can look forward to seeing a few more baby animals this season. Zookeepers are keeping a close eye on the prairie dog colony and hoping to see new babies emerging soon. Because young prairie dogs spend the first several weeks of their lives underground, it is always a pleasant surprise when they finally show themselves in early June. Although we haven’t been able to confirm pregnancies yet, we join the African Lion Species Survival Program in hoping that both Etana and Ajia will produce cubs in the not too distant future!

Curator Report: Japanese Snow Monkeys

Japanese Snow Monkey, Kisho, made the journey to his new home at the Blank Park Zoo of Des Moines on Friday. Kisho has been entertaining visitors at the NEW Zoo since his birth here three years ago. Parents of small boys of the human variety always seemed to be able to relate to the high energy level and trouble making capabilities of this little guy. Ask any staff member or visitor to pick out the naughty monkey - they always point to Kisho!

In Japanese Macaque society, the dominant male rules the troop with the help of a select group of “inner circle” male friends. In exchange for acting as both body guards and enforcers, these buddies of the leader get lots of benefits associated with high social rank. Young males in a troop can either hope to someday work their way up the ranks or they can set off with a few of their best pals to start a new troop (young females usually stay with the family group but occasionally they leave to seek their fortunes also).

Kisho happens to have a genetic makeup that is extremely important to the survival of his species (he is actually ranked as the most genetically valuable male in the captive population!). He also seems to have leadership personality traits. Eventually, Kisho along with his new sidekick will be introduced to a group of females at the Blank Park Zoo. Although Kisho is not yet mature, The Species Survival Program (SSP) for Japanese Macaques hopes that in the next several years, he will assume the leadership position of the troop and help to produce the next generation of Snow monkeys.

Here at the NEW Zoo, the finishing touches are being put on the new Japanese Macaque building and the exhibit yard is about to undergo renovation. New rockwork with a pool and waterfall is scheduled for installation in June. A see-through mesh netting across the front of the exhibit will soon give visitors an even better view of the antics of these always active animals!

Get Ready to Get Lucky

Tallulah, the 6.5 foot American Alligator, accompanied by Zookeepers Jessica Hutjens and Ryan Taylor left the NEW Zoo amid flurries of snow on April 27 to return to her home in Florida. The Keepers report that Tallulah, who has been living at the NEW Zoo on loan for the past 3 years, seemed happy to bask in the Florida sun once again. After spending a day training with the expert staff at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm and Zoological Park, our Zookeepers loaded the newest addition to the NEW Zoo family into the Zoomobile and headed for home.

Lucky, a rare albino American Alligator is not yet 5 years old and still quite small, only about 3.5 feet long. Legend says that if you look into the eyes of an albino alligator, you are lucky, indeed. It is estimated that only about 30 albino alligators exist in the world. As with many other species, albino individuals are a rare occurrence in wild alligator populations. Albino alligators can not survive in the wild because without protection from the sun, the basking reptiles quickly suffer severe burns. Any animals who manage to survive the suns rays don't blend in well with their surroundings and are easy picking for predators. In captivity, the animals can be protected from both predators and the sun and can live a normal lifespan of 60 years.

We are hoping to get lucky out this Friday, May 9th if the weather is nice! Come stop by, meet Lucky, and hopefully get some luck yourself! Get Ready to Get Lucky!

Mayan project to start changes at NEW Zoo

By Tony Walter
twalter@greenbaypressgazette.com

Zoo officials received permission from the Brown County Education and Recreation Committee to send requests for proposals for an architect, general contractor and equipment for the Mayan Taste of the Tropics food court that is expected to become a zoo centerpiece.

"It's all part of our master plan," said Maria Fisher, operations manager for the zoo. "Everything in the building will resemble Mayan ruins."

The project, financed by $600,000 in bonding approved by the County Board, will include glass walls that will give visitors a view of some of the more scenic parts of the zoo. The food court will provide seating for 125 to 150 people and enable zoo officials to move the entire food service away from the present welcome center.

"The gift shop will be expanded to include the area that was our food service," Fisher said, noting that a different area will be used for admission.

The timetable will depend on the ability to hire an architect and contractor.

Springtime in the Lion's Den

Springtime – when a young male lion's fancy turns to thoughts of love! After a long introduction period, Shambe is living the good life as the most popular guy in town in the African Lion exhibit.

Shambe, our 3 year old male lion arrived here from the Lee Richardson Zoo in Kansas (where he was born and raised) on 12/21/07. After about a month in quarantine, he was moved into the lion building and where he could begin to make friends with our 4 year old resident females. Ajia, who had previously been trying to impress the granite statue of long time NEW Zoo resident Kitty (with NO success!) was definitely interested in the new guy - but a bit apprehensive at first. After a week of closely supervised visits, the two became good friends and began spending a portion of each day together. Etana, on the other hand, is not so easy to impress and found the new roommate situation quite annoying. Fortunately, Shambe is a very easy going guy and did everything he could to obey all the rules and behave appropriately. Eventually, he managed to win her over and all three lions are now romping and playing together in the exhibit!

The NEW Zoo is a participant in the African Lion Species Survival Plan – or SSP. SSPs act as a "dating service" for various endangered species to ensure the best possible genetic matches to ensure the survival of the species. All of the NEW Zoo lions are genetically valuable so the more cubs they can produce, the better for the species! Hopefully, before long we will have an entire pride of lions! If you aren’t able to come and visit soon, make sure you check out the latest in the social lives of the lions on the NEW Zoo web cam.

Rufus, The Red Wolf Arrives!

The NEW Zoo is extremely pleased to announce the arrival of "Rufus", a highly endangered male red wolf.

Rufus hails from the Wild Canid Center in St. Louis, MO having made the trip to his new homestead on Saturday, December 8th. He will be joined shortly by another female red wolf coming to the NEW Zoo from Tacoma Washington within the next week or two. Both animals are part of a very important AZA Species Survival Program (SSP) designed to help ensure the survival of selected wildlife species. It is both the NEW Zoo's as well as the US Fish and Wildlife Service's hope that Rufus and his new mate will breed and continue in efforts to save their species from extinction.

The NEW Zoo is proud to be one of only 38 zoos and nature centers in 21 states and the District of Columbia now cooperating in a national red wolf breeding program. As such, the zoo will participate as a valuable partner in efforts to restore the red wolf population. There are only 186 captive red wolves in the world with a total population in the wild estimated at no more than 133 animals.

Bellin Health Donates Ultra Sound Equipment

NEW Zoo staff is crossing one very important and much needed piece of medical equipment off their "Wish List". And, at the same time Bellin Health has expanded its community health care services to residents it never served before - inhabitants at the NEW Zoo. The partnership centers around the generous donation of an ultrasound machine!

Thoughtful team facilitator for Bellin's ultrasound/vascular department, Mr. Jeff Monck, took a recent field trip to the NEW Zoo and took notice of the Animal Hospital at the facility. "Naturally, I was curious as to what medical equipment a zoo hospital would have, so I poked my head in to see," he said. "I noticed right away that they didn't have an ultrasound machine."

Ultrasound is a medical imaging technique used to visualize muscles, tendons and internal organs with real time images. It's used to visualize a fetus during prenatal care.

As it turns out, Monck's department recently purchased new ultrasound machines with enhanced capabilities for Bellin and was contemplating what to do with an older model ultrasound machine. "I figured we'd see if the zoo had use for our older equipment," Monck said. And, "It turns out they did. Ultrasound equipment was an item on their wish list of sorts, so the donation offered a practical and meaningful way for us to keep this machinery in use."

NEW Zoo Director, Neil Anderson, is both elated and more than appreciative. "The donation of this equipment allows us to significantly upgrade the level of care for our animal collection," he said. "What we are going to be able to do diagnostically will be absolutely amazing. The Zoo is eternally grateful to Bellin for this wonderful contribution."

Dr. Tracey Gilbert, of Brown County Veterinary Hospital and Cat Care Clinic and Zoo Veterinarian, echoed those thoughts. "Our mission is to provide the best possible care for our animals," she said. "Very few zoos our size have ultrasound capability, especially of this quality. We will be able to diagnose more quickly and accurately organ problems such as liver and kidney disease, cancer and other conditions." The new unit will help with pregnancy diagnosis and monitoring, as well. "This generous donation from Bellin Hospital will help ensure that the animals at the NEW Zoo continue to receive state-of-the-art veterinary care," Gilbert said.

The donation reflects Bellin's philosophy of being a good neighbor, said Jeff Hoeksema, Bellin imaging services team leader. "As an active partner in the Greater Green Bay community, Bellin is always seeking opportunities to directly engage community members, causes, service organizations and other businesses for the greater good of the community," he said. "It's our goal to use these opportunities to help promote a healthful, nurturing environment for all. In this case, that includes our furry, feathered and scale-skinned friends at the NEW Zoo."

Our Exciting Future

The NEW Zoo is one of only seven AZA accredited zoos in the country that does not receive local or regional tax support for the zoo's annual operating budget. Progress continues on the exciting journey of implementing the Master Plan for the NEW Zoo.
