2014 Zoo Camp

The NEW Zoo is pleased to announce our 4th annual Summer Zoo Camp Program for elementary school-aged children. Children who participate are sure to have a WILD time!

The 2014 Summer Zoo Camp program will begin at 8:45am and end at 2:00pm daily. Children must be registered to attend a day that corresponds to their age group. A morning snack will be provided by the zoo, but parents should provide a non-microwaveable, non-refrigerated lunch for each child. Each day’s program will include educational presentations, live animal encounters, special tours or exhibit chats, and other fun activities like games and crafts. Children should dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.

The cost per day is $20 for Zoo Pass members or $25 for non-Zoo Pass members. Topics and schedule for each day are listed below. Ages listed below correspond to the 2014-2015 school year.

For students entering 5 year-old kindergarten

Paws & Claws

It’s time to investigate how animals eat, move, and look! We’ll focus on the adaptations that animals use for survival in the wild. After all, things like paws and claws are important for defense, finding food, eating, swimming, and more.

Animal Tails

Short tails, fluffy tails, long tails, spiny tails! Explore the world of animal tails and learn why animals have them and just what, exactly, they use them for.

For students entering 1st or 2nd grade

Eat or Be Eaten

What’s for lunch?? Children will discover the ways that animals are linked together in an intricate web of life. We’ll explore food webs and chains, learn about predator-prey relationships and about the important role every species plays in its ecosystem.

Call of the Wild

Squeak, roar, howl and hoot in this exciting camp where we learn about how animals communicate! We’ll explore the sounds animal use and also the soundless ways that animals share messages with one another.

For students entering 3rd or 4th grade

Life in the Leaves

Discover the world of animals that climb and fly! We’ll learn about life in the treetops and the animals that like to perch, swing, hangout, and leap through the canopy.

Under the Surface

Come explore life underground and underwater! We’ll study the champion diggers and burrowers of the world and get a first-hand look at what life is like for the creatures that spend much of their lives beneath our very feet.

For students entering 5th, 6th, or 7th grade

Trek through the Tropics

Explore the rainforest from top to bottom! Discover the wonderful relationships between plants and animals that make rainforests such biological treasures. We’ll learn about how rainforests impact our everyday lives - and how our everyday lives can have important impacts on rainforests.

Animal Architects

Animals can be amazing builders! Together we will learn what animals build and why - and even try to re-create some animal structures of our own. We’ll also explore how zoos create the perfect homes and exhibits for our own animals.

Pre-registration

Pre-registration is required and a limited number of spaces are available for each day’s session. To register, or for more information, contact the NEW Zoo Education Department by calling 920-662-2402 or by emailing info@newzoo.org. Registration begins on January 13th.

LightHawk Pilot Picks up Black-footed Ferret

Pilot to Transport Endangered Species on the Way to Oshkosh LightHawk Volunteer Pilot Picks up Black-footed Ferret Hitchhikers, Flies them to New Home On the Way to EAA AirVenture

This year, LightHawk Volunteer Pilot Michael Baum of Los Altos, CA will make an interesting stop on his way to EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI. The self-described aviation addict who is a driving force behind the Aviators Model Code of Conduct and donates flights through LightHawk will land in Loveland, CO to load a pair of endangered black-footed ferrets into his TBM 700 airplane bound for Oshkosh, WI.

The flight, arranged through LightHawk, a volunteer conservation aviation group based in the United States, will fly its passengers to the North Eastern Wisconsin (NEW) Zoo near Green Bay, WI. “These animals will play an important education and outreach role in their new home,” says Carmen Murach, Curator of Animals for the NEW Zoo.

“Transport by commercial airline is very stressful for wild animals,” explains Murach. “Airlines require that the animals arrive well in advance of their flights. They often spend significant amounts of time in non-temperature controlled, noisy cargo areas. There is just no way to explain to the animals that they are not in danger during this ordeal. The black-footed ferrets transported by Michael Baum will be spared frightening noises and uncomfortable conditions.”

The ferrets will travel in small plastic dog crates. No word on the in-flight snack.

Bringing the black-footed ferret population back from a startling low of 18 individuals to a more sustainable number is not just good for the ferrets, it’s inextricably tied to restoring the American Prairie. The black-footed ferret is considered a flagship species for the North American prairie. By helping these animals, a beneficial ripple extends to over 130 unique plants and animals, a lasting legacy for future generations.

Just as this is not Baum’s first trip to EAA AirVenture, this won’t be the first time he’s flown black-footed ferrets. In February 2012, Baum was joined by his teenage daughter, Kimberly when he embarked on a wintery flight to move the endangered animals to a new home. (Read more about this flight here.)

“I wanted her to know what it felt like to do something good for the environment, and to learn about volunteering for LightHawk,” he says. “She loves animals, and she was fantastic in ensuring the ferrets’ safety and comfort during the flight.”

Baum is currently scheduled to arrive at Basler Flight Service at Wittman Regional Airport, Oshkosh, WI (KOSH) on Saturday, July 27th with the pair of black-footed ferrets before they make their final transfer to the NEW Zoo.

About the Black-Footed Ferret

The ferrets to be transported this year will play an important education and outreach role in their new home at the NEW Zoo. It is essential to get people engaged with wildlife so that they care about ferrets and support ferret conservation. The black-footed ferret is a highly endangered North American species. In 1985, there were only 18 individuals left in the world. The species was saved by the initiation of a breeding program. Over 7,000 ferrets have been produced in this population, but the story is not over. With 600 found in 19 reintroduction sites spread out across the Great Plains in three countries, we are still battling to save the species fighting disease and habitat loss. By flying these ferrets to the NEW Zoo, we will be getting this conservation story out to more people.

You can learn more about the black-footed ferret recovery program (and watch a quick video of a curious ferret in the wild) at :http://www.blackfootedferret.org/.

About LightHawk

Founded in 1979, LightHawk is a non-profit a network of 200 volunteer pilots. LightHawk works in partnership with over 250 conservation organizations each year, providing flights for scientific research, aerial photography and educational tours that serve to protect land, water and wildlife across North and Central America. First- time mother Hoyo is doing a great job caring for her infant. The sex of the new baby is not yet known as Mom is cuddling it closely.

Father Manny is sticking close to the new mom and baby to offer protection from any perceived threat
The new baby is the 3rd offspring for father Manny. Curator of Animals, Carmen Murach says: “Manny is keeping busy telling his rambunctious 2 year olds that they can’t play with their new half sibling just yet!”. Manny came to the NEW Zoo from the Central Park Zoo in New York in 2010 as recommended by the Species Survival Program (SSP) for Japanese macaques. The NEW Zoo partners with other Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) member zoos to ensure genetically healthy and diverse populations of endangered animals.

Japanese macaques are the northern-most dwelling non-human primate. Wild populations are threatened by loss of habitat and increasing conflict with agriculture. Japanese macaques are famous as one of the first non- human species discovered to have a culture. Learned behaviors are passed from one generation to the next.

Senior Zookeeper Jessica Hutjens expects NEW Zoo visitors to enjoy watching the baby monkey grow: “It won’t be long at all before this little monkey is bouncing around the exhibit playing with the other young monkeys, causing trouble and wowing the crowds!”

Although the troop always has access to the privacy of a heated building, Hoyo has been spending the majority of her time on exhibit soaking up the sun and showing off the newest troop member

The 2013 Summer Zoo Camp program will begin at 8:45am and end at 2:00pm each day. Children must be registered to attend a day that corresponds to their age group. A morning snack will be provided by the zoo, but parents should provide a non-microwaveable, non-refrigerated lunch for each child. Children should dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.

Registration

Pre-registration is required and a limited number of spaces are available for each day’s session. To register, or for more information, contact the NEW Zoo Education Department by calling 920-662-2405 or by emailing bc_zoo_education@co.brown.wi.us. Registration begins on January 7th. A minimum number of students must be registered in order to hold each session. Sessions that do not meet the minimum number will be canceled five days in advance.

Cost

The cost per day is $20 for Zoo Pass members or $25 for non-Zoo Pass members. Topics and schedule for each day are listed below. Ages listed below correspond to the 2013-2014 school year.

5 Year-old Kindergarten

For students entering 5 year-old kindergarten

Monday July 8th or 22nd: “Sense-able Creatures”

Ever wonder how animals see after dark, hear underwater, and feel without fingers? In this insightful class, we’ll see how animals make sense of the world around them.

Monday July 15th: “Animal Armor”

Animals use many things to protect themselves in the wild. From claws, poison, shells, and teeth: find out how animals survive in a wild world.

1st or 2nd Grade

For students entering 1st or 2nd grade

Tuesday July 9th or 23rd OR Friday July 12th: “Animal Extremes”

Animals survive in some extreme environments: deserts can reach temperatures above 130 degrees, and frozen tundras can be colder than -30 degrees! From the depths of the oceans to the highest mountain peaks, discover what extreme living is like in this exciting camp.

Tuesday July 16th or Friday July 19th or 26th: “Native Neighbors”

Our own backyards are full of fabulous and interesting wildlife. From opossums to owls, spiders to snakes, we’ll take a look at the amazing animals that call our neighborhood home.

3rd or 4th Grade

For students entering 3rd or 4th grade

Wednesday July 10th or 24th: “As Different as Night and Day”

The life of a nocturnal animal, awake in the darkest night, is very different from that of a daytime animal, surviving under the sun. How are these animals adapted to see, hear, and hunt for food in their environments? We’ll explore the answers to these and many other questions in this camp.

Wednesday July 17th: “Alien Invaders”

The aliens have landed! No, not the green space creatures - these alien invaders are already on Earth but they are far from friendly. Come explore why some plants and animals can actually cause harm to an environment and its original inhabitants.

5th, 6th or 7th Grade

For students entering 5th, 6th, or 7th grade

Thursday July 11th or 25th: “ZSI: Green Bay”

From bugs to bones to bite marks, find out all about how animals help us solve mysteries. We’ll investigate the real-life techniques used by both crime scene detectives and wildlife scientists alike.

Thursday July 18th: “Toys and Treats”

Everyone loves toys and treats, and animals are no exception. This “enriching” camp is sure to be a treat for wildlife and students alike, as we learn how having fun is also good for us all.

We have received 2 generous pledges for the hospital pending construction beginning in 2013. The Society board members have been working diligently to raise the $300,000.00 in funds to finish the Education Center so that we can get started on the Hospital.

Red Wolf Tamaska

Tamaska, a six year old male Red Wolf who recently arrived here from the Great Plains Zoo in Sioux Falls, SD, is ready to meet the public. Tamaska spent a month in quarantine to ensure that he is healthy and ready to meet his new mate. After a day of getting to know each other through the safety of fencing, Tamaska joined Laurel in the exhibit yard earlier this week. The introduction went very smoothly and the two wolves seem to be getting along extremely well. Their first night together appears to have been very cozy - they emerged together from one of several small nest boxes in the morning! We hope that the pair will produce a litter of pups in the spring. So far, it seems as if the wolves approve of these plans! Tamaska is the darker wolf in the photo. The dark stripes on his forelegs are good identifying characteristics.

The Northeastern Wisconsin Zoo is one of several AZA zoos which has partnered with the US Fish and Wildlife Department to ensure the survival of this critically endangered species. Once common throughout eastern and south central United States, the wild red wolf population is limited to parts of North Carolina. Only about 100 red wolves remain in the wild, but the recovery program is bolstering the population. The AZA Species Survival Program for red wolves is involved in not only captive breeding, but also reintroductions of wolves into the wild.

Welcome Roger and Ari

Pilot to Donate a Flight from Wyoming to Wisconsin

Transporting Endangered Black-footed Ferrets to New Home

Boise, ID - On February 21, 2012, Michael Baum, a LightHawk volunteer pilot from Los Altos, CA will donate a flight in his TBM 700 single engine turboprop to transport two endangered black-footed ferrets, Roger and Ari to a new home. No word on what in-flight snacks will be offered.

The ferrets will travel by land 22 miles from the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Black-footed Ferret Conservation Center in Carr, CO to Cheyenne Regional Airport, WY. From Cheyenne, they will board Baum’s aircraft bound for Austin Straubel Int’l Airport in Green Bay, WI and their new home at the North Eastern Wisconsin (NEW) Zoo. During the flight, Roger and Ari will be resting comfortably in their own medium sized dog crates.

“For us, transporting sensitive endangered wild animals presents some real challenges,” explains Carmen Murach, Curator of Animals for the Northeastern Wisconsin Zoo. “Commercial flights can be very stressful and hard on the animals. Being able to utilize a private aircraft to move these black-footed ferrets will eliminate those scary variables and make the journey for our ferrets, Roger and Ari so much easier.”

The two high-flying black-footed ferrets are destined to play an important education and outreach role in their new home at the NEW Zoo engaging the public so that they care about ferrets and support ferret conservation. The black-footed ferret is a highly endangered North American species and as recently as 1985, there were only 18 individuals left in the world. Since then, the species has been rescued from the brink of extinction by the initiation of a breeding program. Now over 7,000 ferrets have been produced in this population, but the story is not over. With 600 found in 19 reintroduction sites spread out across the Great Plains in three countries, the battle continues to save the species from disease and habitat loss. By flying these ferrets to the NEW zoo, LightHawk enables the animals to share their conservation story with more people.

“We see these wildlife transport flights as a real win-win situation,” said LightHawk Executive Director Rudy Engholm. “The donated flight moves the animals with the least amount of stress and travel time. It also provides a unique opportunity to pilots who want to make a real contribution to wildlife conservation. And it’s great to be able to say ‘I had a wild animal as a passenger in my aircraft’.”

Legend AeroServe, the new Fixed Base Operator at the Cheyenne Regional Airport, is extremely excited to partner with LightHawk on the black-footed ferret mission. Both Legend and the Cheyenne Regional Airport understand the plight of this species and the need to sustain and rebuild the population of this beautiful creature.

LightHawk, North America’s largest and oldest volunteer-based environmental aviation organization, provides donated flights in private aircraft to elevate conservation efforts LightHawk flies more about 1,000 missions each year for over 250 conservation partners in North America and Central America. LightHawk is a purely collaborative effort, as our staff works with over 200 volunteer pilots to design aerial campaigns that help conservation groups, universities, government agencies and individuals protect land, water and wildlife.

About LightHawk

Founded in 1979, non-profit 501(c)(3) LightHawk is the largest and oldest volunteer-based environmental aviation organization in North America. LightHawk provides donated flights to help protect land, water and wildlife. This view from above enhances environmental accountability and accelerates conservation efforts in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Central America. LightHawk partners with leading local, regional and international conservation organizations, these collaborative efforts produce results that are far greater than the “sum of the parts.”

LightHawk manages multi-faceted aerial campaigns which make its aviation, environmental, geographical, and scientific experience freely available to conservation partners in support of their work. They mobilize a large network of highly skilled volunteer pilots who provide flights and donate their time, aircraft, fuel, and expertise to our aerial campaigns. LightHawk flies carefully selected stakeholders who can affect conservation outcomes. Passengers include scientists, educators, government officials, students, industry and media representatives, indigenous community leaders, and local citizens. For passengers, the shared aerial perspective establishes common ground. This shared experience represents a powerful way to move the stakeholders beyond ideological barriers. Though the organization is based in Lander, Wyoming, the majority of LightHawk’s staff members work from home offices around the country.

Thank You N.E.W. Zoological Society

Dear Friends of the N.E.W. Zoological Society Inc.,

We are very thankful to report that we have supported our NEW Zoo in the following ways in 2011.

Funding for the Construction of the new Education & Conservation Center
Funding for the Construction of the new “Land of the Giants” tortoise exhibit
Funding for a new Public Announcement System
AZA membership for the NEW Zoo and the N.E.W. Zoological Society, Inc.
Funding for Conservation Programs
Funding for the Lorikeet Exhibit
Co-Funding the Education Coordinator position and Education programs
Sponsoring the annual Volunteer/Docent Appreciation Dinner
Providing River Rock and 100% Recycled Plastic Cedar Style Benches
Sponsoring the “Pave the Way” brick program
Funding the ad in the Greater Green Bay Convention Visitor Guide
Miscellaneous expenses at the zoo

The total amount the Society contributed to the NEW Zoo in 2011 is approximately $659,497.00

This total reflects the money contributed in 2011 to support our zoo but does not include monies raised in 2011.

We raised over $13,000.00 for the zoo’s educational needs by co-hosting the 12th annual “Feast with the Beasts” event held in August. The date for the 13th annual event is Monday, August 6th, 2012.

Our primary focus for 2012 is to continue raising funds for the Education and Conservation building. The beautiful building is up and we are currently furnishing the inside. Our goal is to complete this project in 2012. We are planning a late spring or early summer grand opening.

We count our blessings from our monetary and in-kind donors every day and we look forward to many more generous offerings to help us support our wonderful NEW Zoo.

We wish you and your families a Safe, Healthy, Prosperous, and Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Judy Krawczyk, President

This means that the zoo is sustained entirely by funds coming from donations and sales, including those from admissions, Zoo Passes, education programs, and more. The zoo is committed to providing a family-friendly, affordable destination for members of the public of Northeastern Wisconsin.

Welcome ‘Winnie’ the Bear

Winnie, a 7 year old, 272 lb black bear comes to the NEW Zoo from the Niabi Zoo in Illinois. She arrived here on Friday, July 8th and ventured into the exhibit yard for the first time on Tuesday. Carmen Murach, Curator of Animals says “We kept her indoors for her first few days here so we could be sure she had a chance to become accustomed to her den and know that it is a secure and comfortable refuge.”

The exhibit has been empty since the death of 26 year old Suzie last winter (bears are expected to live about 25 years in captivity - much longer than a wild bear would typically live). Murach says “Winnie wasted no time showing us that we will need to adjust to having a much more active bear in the exhibit - she figured out how to open the valve on her pond within minutes! The ancient bears who had previously inhabited the exhibit did not have time for such foolishness.”

Winnie will continue to have the option of hiding out in her den if she so chooses while she is getting used to her new home. The NEW Zoo hopes to add a second bear to the exhibit in the future to provide companionship for Winnie. Wildlife rehabilitation facilities frequently contact the AZA in an effort to find permanent homes for young wild orphan bears who would otherwise be euthanized.

Visitors can see Winnie and check out her new digs in the Wisconsin/Northern Trails section of the NEW Zoo.

Female Moose, Matilda, Now on Exhibit

Happy First Birthday Matilda!

Matilda the moose will be celebrating her first birthday on May 21 in her new exhibit at the NEW Zoo. The young moose arrived here from the Dakota Zoo in Bismarck, North Dakota this past winter-an acquisition made possible by the generous donation of NEW Zoo friend and volunteer, Linda Immel. She was moved to her permanent exhibit on Mother’s Day. The moose exhibit at the NEW Zoo is much admired within the zoo world for its large area which includes ponds, forest and natural wetland habitat. Because many features of the exhibit were hidden under a deep blanket of snow by the time Matilda had completed quarantine, it was decided that her move into the exhibit should wait until spring. Curator of Animals Carmen Murach said “Like many youngsters, Matilda does not always think things through before she acts. She loves to run and frolic and we were afraid that she might trip over fallen logs under the snow or crash through the ice of the pond when the world was hidden by snow.”

Dave the Moose Meets Matilda

Resident male moose, 7 year old Dave, is getting to know Matilda from his side of the exhibit. The normally solitary animals are currently within sight of each other but separated until they become better acquainted. Murach says “They have the opportunity for nose to nose contact, but so far, although Dave has been calling to her, Matilda has not been willing to come quite that close. One of the nice features of this exhibit is that it allows for the moose to choose to have friends or to lead a more solitary life.”

Visitors can see young Matilda and check on the development of Dave’s annual set of antlers from the deck and the overlook of the Riley Building in the Northern Trail section of the NEW Zoo.

Unexpected Baby Snow Monkey

Meet Seiichi - New Baby Snow Monkey

While children were searching for eggs during the Eggstravaganzoo Easter event at the NEW Zoo on the morning of April 23rd, Zookeepers found a surprise of their own – an unexpected baby monkey! Curator of Animals Carmen Murach states “We’ve been watching the monkeys closely because we are expecting 2 of the females to give birth soon. Although the Species Survival Program for snow monkeys would like to see 6 of our females reproduce, we plan to space the youngsters out a bit”. Murach adds: “Family planning for snow monkeys involves birth control implants similar to those sometimes used in people. Birth control is not, however, 100% effective! Of course, we don’t mind surprises when they are as adorable as this little guy!”

Seiichi (say-chee), which means “sincere one” in Japanese

The infant male monkey has been named Seiichi (say-chee), which means “sincere one” in Japanese. He is being raised by Zookeeper and experienced monkey foster mom Jessica Hutjens. Murach says “We thought Kasumi would be a great mom but we suspect the hormonal effects of the implant might have interfered with normal maternal bonding. She has always been interested in infants but just didn’t seem to consider this baby to be her responsibility”. The little monkey is just beginning to move around and play with toys and is already spending time getting to know the monkey troop. It is extremely important for Seiichi to be well versed in the ways of monkeys from the start if he is to grow up to be a well adjusted member of monkey society.

Like most infants, he spends a good portion of his day sleeping and is still too young to be on public display. Visitors lucky enough to be at the zoo when Seiichi isn’t feeling fussy may be able to catch a glimpse of Hutjens bottle feeding the new baby in the window of the Japanese Snow Monkey building at approximately 9 am and noon daily.

Bid Farewell to Akeelah and Jamela

Two NEW Zoo lions are leaving childhood behind and are ready to begin their new lives in Memphis.

NEW Zoo staff, volunteers and visitors have taken much joy in witnessing the growth and development of the young lions born in November of 2008. The memories of the cubs first steps into the outdoor exhibit, their delight in cuddling with their father, their amazement at the discovery of their first snowfall, and the absolute elation they show during an enthusiastic session of mud wrestling will not soon be forgotten. Carmen Murach, Curator of Animals at the NEW Zoo remarked, “It’s been wonderful to see the “cubs” grow and learn. These lions have such a range of personalities and watching them all interact has been fascinating. You can learn so much watching an entire pride of lions.”

Species Survival Program (SSP)

Two year old sisters, Akeelah and Jamela, are on the verge of taking the next step in their young lives. The Species Survival Program (SSP) for African Lions has determined the perfect placement for the girls. Zoo Director Neil Anderson will be escorting the lions to their new home at the Memphis Zoo later this month. There, they will be joined by a male lion from the Tulsa Zoo who has been selected as the perfect match for both females. “We were really happy to learn that the girls will stay together,” said Murach. “I’ve talked to staff at the Tulsa Zoo and I think this “arranged marriage” is going to work out very well – not only for the species as a whole, but for these cats in particular. Young male Thabo sounds like a wonderful cat and I think our girls are going to love him! Staff at the Memphis Zoo are very excited to receive these three much loved lions.”

NEW Zoo Selected As AZA SSP Breeding Facility

The NEW Zoo is fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in the Species Survival Program and to be selected as one of the few AZA breeding facilities for this species. Adult lions Shambe and Ajia are expected to produce another litter in the future. “It is immensely rewarding to be so closely involved with helping endangered species,” stated Murach. “Saying goodbye is always hard but it is a bit like watching your kids grow up and embark upon lives of their own. If you have done your job well, they are well adjusted and happy to face new adventures (not to mention that Memphis is a great place to visit!).”

The Lions Leave: March 21, 2011

The lions are scheduled to make the journey to their new home on 3/21/11. Their brother, Asani, will remain with his parents until arrangements are made for his transfer to the Buffalo Zoo later this spring.

Stop on out to the NEW Zoo and bid farewell to Akeelah and Jamela before they embark upon their journey to the place they soon call home.

Zooper Bowl

It is clear to staff, volunteers and visitors at the NEW Zoo in Green Bay, Wisconsin, that the animals are picking up on the extra excitement in the air as Superbowl XLV approaches.

Green and Gold Theme

Carmen Murach, Curator of Animals for the facility explained, “The zoo’s behavioral enrichment program ensures that life is always interesting and enjoyable for the animals. This week, the fun has taken on a Green & Gold theme. Animals representing many nations-who call Green Bay home-are enthusiastically embracing Packer Fever. The monkeys are tossing footballs, the wolves are intercepting passes, the giraffes are sporting team colors - even the reptiles are investigating Packer paraphernalia.”

Our Lions Will Tackle Roethlisberger!

Murach when on to say, “It often surprises visitors to see African lions outdoors in the wintertime but cats born and raised on the frozen tundra develop thick wooly fur coats. Although they always have the option of staying inside their heated building, the NEW Zoo lion pride loves to romp through the snow, even in sub zero temperatures.” Later this week, the lions are expected to tackle and demolish a paper mache replica of Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. “He may be “Big Ben” to some, but we’ll see how he fairs when faced with a pride of ferocious lions!”

Twins! Cotton-top Tamarin

Congratulations are in order for the NEW Zoo resident pair of Cotton-top Tamarins. The tiny monkeys are the proud parents of twins! Carmen Murach, Curator of Animals at the NEW Zoo has announced that, “Like most NEW Zoo babies, these youngsters are very important additions to a critically endangered species. Fewer than 300 Cotton-top Tamarins make up the captive population and the South American primates are literally loosing ground in the wild due to habitat destruction.” Murach elaborated on the fact that AZA Accredited Zoos throughout North America work together to save species like Cotton-top Tamarins through carefully managed plans (called Species Survival Plans or SSPs) which optimize genetic diversity and ensure a healthy captive population which, in turn, could help save endangered species from extinction in the wild.

Raising babies is a family affair for tamarins. Both Mom and Dad take turns carrying their young on their back. Long before they have babies of their own, it is important for tamarins to gain experience by helping to take care of younger siblings. Bonnie and Clyde are wonderful parents who work well as a team.

“Bonnie was sent here to join Clyde in 2007 and the two hit it off instantly!”, remarked Murach. “They have been a closely bonded couple ever since. In 2010 the SSP asked that they start a family and they were happy to comply. The young tamarins were born the day after Christmas and after a few weeks of privacy are ready to meet the world!”

NEW ZOO Announces Baby Giraffe Loss

It is a sad day for the NEW Zoo, and the community. The long awaited baby giraffe was born early Saturday morning, but only survived for 36 hours. The female calf was born weak, and was unable to nurse on her own. Zoo staff and veterinarian Dr. Tracey Gilbert were monitoring the situation closely, and administered milk to the calf through a feeding tube. Despite this and other treatments, the calf died Sunday afternoon. Dr. Gilbert performed a necropsy on the calf, and results will be available in approximately two weeks. Zuri, the mother giraffe, is doing well. At this point there is no indication that Zuri cannot be bred again, but a decision will be made once all the results are in. It is not unusual for baby giraffe to die during or shortly after birth.

“Our staff and Veterinarian Dr. Gilbert worked very hard through the weekend to give the female calf the best chance to survive but unfortunately the calf died Sunday despite their efforts,” stated Neil Anderson, Zoo Director. “As we always hope for the best, sometimes the Circle of Life can deliver us moments that are very special and moments that are truly heartbreaking both of which can bring a tear to our eyes. Giraffe calves have special challenges in learning to stand, walk and nurse because of their incredibly long heavy legs and long necks. They need to be born very strong to accomplish this. Zoo staff and Dr. Gilbert followed Zuri’s pregnancy closely since conception, and there was no outward sign of problems before birth. Having any complications in the birthing process and first few days of life can make it very difficult to survive.”

Grand Opening: Monarch Way Station

Saturday, August 14th @ 11am

Come and join us as we celebrate the opening of an official Monarch Way Station/Butterfly Garden at the NEW Zoo on Saturday, August 14th. We’ll be kicking the festivities off at 11:00am with a ribbon cutting followed by informational classes about planting a butterfly garden and the life cycle of the butterfly at 11:30am & 1:00pm.

Designed and Planted by Volunteers

Designed and planted by dedicated volunteers, this new addition can be enjoyed as visitors make their ascent to the giraffe feeding platform near the center of the facility.

“Butterfly gardens are not only beautiful, but easy to maintain. They can be somewhat formal plantings, or incorporated in a prairie garden. Even apartment dwellers can grow potted plants that attract host butterflies”, stated garden creator Diane Rockhill.

Help Preserve the Monarch Population - Create a Way Station at Home

Growing interest in butterflies, specifically the Monarch, stems from their declining population and interested gardeners seek to ensure the continued existence of the Monarch by creating “way stations” which offer a safe harbor in the wake of the loss of their natural habitat.

Stop on out and learn just how easy it would be replicate the NEW Zoo’s Way Station in your own backyard! We’re making it easy to get you started: Scenic View Garden Center and Silo Prairie Gardens, contributors to the butterfly landing at the Zoo, will be on hand selling plants-just attend one of the educational sessions and register to win a free plant to take home with you.

Take Home a Rain Barrel

And, don’t forget, the NEW Zoo also sells rain barrels! As a proud partner with the Habitat for Humanity Restore, rain barrels are on sale at the Paws and Claws gift shop for $45! (Proceeds to benefit Habitat for Humanity) Save on your water bill and conserve our precious resources, too!

“New” at the Zoo

Babies Abound

Babies abound and that’s not all that is new at your NEW Zoo! The trumpeter swan cygnets are hatching-a total of 8 fluffy little, white babies have arrived already as the Memorial Day weekend approaches. The young cygnets will stay at the Zoo until late summer when they will make the journey to Iowa and become part of the important trumpeter swan re-introduction program the NEW Zoo is a proud participant in.

Trumpeter Swans Cygnets

Zoo Director, Neil Anderson stated, “This is a wonderful opportunity for the facility to continue to be involved with field conservation projects and, in this case, returning trumpeter swans to the State of Iowa. Some of the first swans ever re-introduced back to the wild back in the 1990’s came from the NEW Zoo. Last year the zoo donated 8 cygnets that were released into the wild in Iowa. It looks like we will be able to do the same again this year.”

Ducklings and Prairie Dog Pups!

And if you like the new cygnets, don’t miss out on the new ducklings! In the newly renovated North American aviary there are several species of water fowl with babies out and about. Catch the excitement going on at the prairie dog exhibit too-prairie dog pups have emerged from the den for public viewing and are they adorable!

Our New Moose “Willow”

In addition to the new ‘additions’, our contact station is open-get up close and personal with our many educational animals. While you’re at it, meet our newest resident who arrived two weeks ago from Nebraska-“Willow”, our female moose is on exhibit and getting acclimated to her new home. We have also welcomed a black-footed ferret, “Jumbo”, from Louisville to our critter collection. Join us in welcoming this endangered species his new home.

Anderson reminds us, “NBC 26 Family Celebration Day at the Zoo is a great weekend especially with all of the new arrivals and recent births! Take time out to visit the zoo! A trip to the zoo is also a special place to review and reflect on all of the memorial bricks, benches, graphics and memorial gifts that made your zoo possible and very special.”

Mayan ‘Taste of the Tropics’ Restaurant Is Now Open

Check out what’s ‘cookin’ at the NEW Zoo!

Bring your ferocious appetite with you the next time you pay a visit to NEW Zoo-the Mayan ‘Taste of the Tropics’ restaurant is now open and the menu is something to roar about! After a summer of construction and a fall filled with careful menu planning and item selection, visitors are raving-about the food and the facility. A great deal of attention was paid to ensure that prices were kept affordable and healthy food options where offered including salads and wraps in addition to the scrumptious staples like monster hamburgers, hot dogs, loaded nachos and mozzarella monkey tails. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy a slice our own fresh, homemade pizza either-it’s amazing and a new feature for the restaurant.

The zoo’s Master Plan included the provision for a Mayan-themed eatery within the center of the park. And, that’s precisely where you’ll find this majestic 4,500 sq ft building which features seating for 100 indoors and ample outdoor tables peacefully perched next to the trumpeter swan pond. Harkening a Mayan temple and boasting ceilings as high as 30ft in the dining area, the building beckons visitors from just about everywhere. Better yet, diners have a gorgeous panoramic view of many exhibits including the giraffes and their feeding platform, the Great Plains area, the African wattled cranes and the river otters. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the zoo!

The Taste of the Tropics will be a great place for corporate meetings, after hour rentals and, of course, general admission visitors to sit a spell and enjoy a new experience at their zoo.

Tortoise Walk

May 22nd, 2010

Beginning at 10:00am

Al and Tootie, the NEW Zoo’s wonderful tortoise couple, are getting ready to make their famous Tortoise Walk back to their summer exhibit outdoors. This is an annual event where the Zoo’s two 30 plus year old Aldabra Tortoises move from their winter facility to their summer home in the Children’s Zoo area. The event is quite an undertaking in light of the fact that Tootie, the female Aldabra, weighs in at approximately 150 pounds, and Al, the male, tops the scales at a whopping 425 pounds!

Come and encourage our two giants on as they hit the road on a journey which usually takes approximately 45 minutes. The fun will begin at the Children’s Zoo Barn and will culminate at the tortoise exhibit which is located at the entrance to Children’s Zoo area.
Al and Tootie are among the few animals who will see many generations of visitors over their lifetime. The Zoo expects to begin groundbreaking on a brand new home for the Aldabra tortoises this summer. The new exhibit entitled “Land of the Giants” will incorporate innovative new design features sure to please visitors and our resident tortoises alike!

After you watch Al and Tootie make their annual trek, be sure to say hi to Willow, the newest addition to our animal collection. Willow is a ten year old, 1000 lb female moose from the Riverside Zoo in Scottsbluff, Nebraska who is settling in well to her new home. Willow was a calm traveler during the 16 hour trip by horse trailer and was busy exploring her new exhibit within moments of arriving early Saturday morning. The NEW Zoo moose exhibit, with its natural wetlands and a microclimate hospitable to many northern plant species, is the envy of many zoos. We expect that Willow and our resident bull moose, Dave, will produce a calf next spring.

DNR Announces New License Plate at the NEW Zoo

DNR Announces New License Plate at the New Zoo

Badger Picked for New Endangered Resources License Plate

Department of Natural Resources Secretary Matt Frank today announced the badger will be featured on a new license plate that will help fund protection efforts for rare and unique Wisconsin wildlife and plants.

A new endangered resources license plate was authorized by the 2009-2011 state budget approved by the Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Doyle last year. Last October, the DNR held an online advisory vote for four potential plate designs depicting native Wisconsin wildlife and their habitat. During the 11-day poll, more than 23,000 voted. The badger design received 68 percent of the total votes.

“Wisconsin’s diverse landscape supports a wide variety of wildlife and plant communities,” Secretary Frank said. “The Endangered Resource program is working to protect more than 200 endangered and threatened species through research and habitat protection.

“Past success stories have included restoration of sustainable populations of the bald eagle, the trumpeter swan, the osprey and the grey wolf,” Frank said. “Our current efforts include the Kirtland’s Warbler and Karner Blue Butterfly, both in need of pine barrens for habitat in the central regions, the Great Lakes shorebird - the Piping Plover, and the American Marten of the northern forests.”

The new license plate includes a depiction of the badger, the tiger swallowtail butterfly, the eastern Meadowlark and the prairie sunflower. All are native Wisconsin species which all depend upon savanna habitat. The new plate, which went on sale today, joins the popular grey wolf plate that has been the official endangered resources plate since 1995. These plates are available to Wisconsin motorists for a $15 issuance fee and the $25 contribution, added to the cost of their annual vehicle registration. The $25 is used to support the Endangered Resources Program.

All four plates were designed by Nan Rudd of Rudd Designs at no cost to the DNR or the state. Wisconsin photographers Shane Rucker (badger) and Mike McDowell (meadowlark) also donated time and talent.

We’re Goin’ for the World Record!

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010 at Noon

Join the zoo crew at noon in our attempt to beat the Guinness Book of World Records for the world’s largest ‘bunny hop’! We’re sure we can do it-we need over 3,900 hoppers! For the cost of regular admission-all visitors are invited to participate. This is a chance of a lifetime-if the record is broken, participants can purchase a certificate from Guinness which indicates they were part of the record breaking troupe.

Join us for the Easter EggStravaganZoo.

Definition of Record

This record is for the greatest number of people simultaneously performing the “Bunny hop” at a single venue.

Current Record

3,841 participants

Specific Guidelines

Although the record is for the number of people involved, the total length of the line should also be submitted as additional evidence.
Participants must be assembled in a single, continuous line. The line need not be straight.
All participants should wear a headband with bunny’s ears.
Each person should be able to touch his/her neighbor with ease if their arms were outstretched.
The person at the front should move at an appropriate pace with the rest of the line following. Participants must remain within arm’s length of the person in front of them at all times.
The number of people who are hoping to constitute the record must be all well versed in the dance moves.
A loud start and finish signal recognized by all participants must be used. Two experienced timekeepers (e.g. from a local athletics club) must time the attempt with stopwatches accurate to 0.01 seconds.
The dance must last a minimum of 5 minutes. Any performers who do not participate fully for the entire 5 minutes must be deducted from the final total. This needs to be done so that the record is clearly for the number of people actually participating and not just the number of people attending the event.
All participants must be performing the same routine simultaneously, thus all participants must be able to either see instructors or follow their movements on a video screen.
The chosen dance area must be large enough to not only hold the people but to allow them to dance unrestricted the required steps.

General Guidelines

Attendance numbers must be accurately confirmed by means of either registration into a logbook, by turnstile or by a ticketing system to count the participants. This is essential and must be done efficiently. The method to be used must be pre-approved by Guinness.
The two overall independent witnesses must confirm the exact and final figure of total participants in their statements.
Sufficient stewards must be involved to ratify that all the contestants fully participate in the attempt – stewards must be placed in such a way that every part of the record attempt area is visible to the officials

Evidence Requirements

Two witness statements or signed affidavit by a public notary
Independent corroboration in the form of media coverage
Video footage of the record attempt on VHS, DVD or CD-Rom Video
High quality color photographs
Log books, official statements & measurements

Flo the Moose Passes Away

We are sad to report that Flo, our beloved female moose, passed away over the weekend after a long illness.

NEW Zoo consulting veterinarian, Dr. Tracey Gilbert reports : “She has been battling chronic dental infections, intestinal problems, and finally, pneumonia. After many courses of medications to treat her symptoms, Flo finally passed away peacefully overnight last Saturday. She had undergone many tests and treatments in the last few years, and was a trooper to the end. A necropsy was performed to learn the extent and causes of her medical problems so that we can continue to provide the best possible care to our moose. Test results are expected late in December.”

Flo arrived at the Zoo in July of 2000 when she was only 7 weeks old and weighing about 120 lbs. She was found along a roadside in upstate Vermont. Only a few days old, the little moose was still nursing on her mother who had been struck and killed by a car.

A passerby scooped up the baby moose and took her to Dr. Lynda Ulrich, a St. Albans, Vt., dentist who has done previous moose rehabilitation work. We were happy to provide a home for the little orphan at the NEW Zoo. Flo spent time in several zoo exhibits as she grew before joining our male in the Northern Trail Moose exhibit. Although she had a rough start of her own, Flo was a great mom over the years and successfully raised several calves. Flo and one of her calves even appeared on “Good Morning America”.

Flo was a moose with a big personality and was a favorite among staff, volunteers and visitors. We all feel lucky to have known and loved her - she will be missed.

National Zoo Keeper Appreciation Week

July 19-25, 2009

Come & Celebrate With The NEW Zoo Crew!

Thank You Zookeepers

In recognition of the dedication of zoo keepers, the American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK) and zoos across the nation celebrate National Zookeeper Week! During the week, zoos nationwide honor animal care professionals and the work they do in animal care, conservation, and education.

Free Cake For First 500 Visitors

Thank you, Linda Immel

Linda Immel, a generous donor and dedicated volunteer of the NEW Zoo, came up with a “delicious” way to celebrate! The first 500 visitors who come to the Zoo Wednesday, July 22nd will receive a piece of cake! Immel declared,”The NEW Zoo has incredibly talented zoo keepers that dedicate a lot of time and effort to ensure exceptional quality care. I would like to celebrate this honorary week and help the general public understand the importance of the work that they do”.

About Zoo “keepers”

The title “keeper” encompasses a very broad range of animal care duties. NEW Zoo “keepers” fulfill many roles in an effort to ensure the safety, security, comfort and well-being of our very important animal friends at the zoo. From preparing diets and maintaining exhibits as clean, natural habitats to acting as spokespersons for endangered species-zoo keepers are skilled specialists when it comes to multi-tasking in effective, efficient and creative ways.

NEW Zoo is AZA Accredited

The NEW Zoo is an accredited member of the AZA (Association for Zoos & Aquariums) and is one of only 6 accredited zoos in the country that does not receive local or regional tax support towards operational expenses. To be accredited, the zoo must meet exceptional standards in animal care, wildlife conservation and public education. Our zoo keepers play a vital and instrumental role in ensuring that these strict standards are met on a daily basis.

New Baby Cougar

Cougar: Gillin

Gillin, the orphan baby cougar rescued from the wilds of Oregon, is adjusting well to her new life at the Northeastern Wisconsin Zoo.

Many zoo animals that are solitary in the wild benefit from having friends and hobbies in a captive situation. Gillin will be introduced to our adult cougar BB when she is a bit older.

Like most rambunctious babies, she loves to wrestle. In order for her to learn appropriate social behavior, she has been provided with a playmate. Treva is an energetic 2 year old Welsh terrier who belongs to Curator Carmen Murach.

Surprise Japanese Macaque Birth

Snow Monkey: Akira

This little Japanese macaque (snow monkey) was a surprise birth on Easter morning. Her mother had been implanted with birth control as she is an older female. Fortunately, the failed birth control resulted in a valuable genetic addition for this SSP species.

A difficult birth left both mother and infant weak and forced zoo officials to intervene to save the baby. Little Akira’s mother was not willing to care for her baby when she was returned the following day.

Zookeeper Jessica Hutjens is filling the role of surrogate mother. Akira is currently in the process of being integrated into the troop. She spends playtime with two of her older half sisters daily.

New Lynx Kittens Arrive

Introducing Carson and Lucy

The NEW Zoo is pleased to announce the arrival of two Lynx kittens, Carson and Lucy! Both cats are available for observation in the nursery at the NEW Zoo animal hospital as they are now old enough and strong enough to be in the public eye. Come and check out the kittens’ adorable little faces and huge paws between noon and 3:00pm daily.

Zoo officials are optimistic that the pair will assume residency in their permanent exhibit in future weeks. Carmen Murach, Curator of Animals at the zoo, now transports the kittens to and from the facility as they remain reliant on Murach for scheduled feedings and monitored, overnight care. Murach has honed her mothering capabilities of non-domesticated cats over the past year by having recently hand raised two orphaned African Lion cubs born at the NEW Zoo.

“Adult Lynx have large feet but you will be amazed at the size of Carson’s paws!” stated Murach. “They are adorable and sweet and love attention. They are an absolute hit with staff, volunteers and we’re certain they will be a hit with you too!” said Murach.

Thank You Lee and Kathy Anderson

The acquisition of Carson and Lucy was made possible through a generous donation from Lee and Kathy Anderson, animal lovers and active volunteers here at the facility.

Annual Tortoise Walk

Beginning at 10:00 am

Al and Tootie, the NEW Zoo’s wonderful tortoise couple, are getting ready to make their famous Tortoise Walk back to their summer exhibit outdoors. This is an annual event where the Zoo’s two 27-year old Aldabra Tortoises move from their winter facility to their summer home in the Children’s Zoo area. The event is quite an undertaking in light of the fact that Tootie, the female Aldabra, weighs in at approximately 270 pounds, and Al, the male, tops the scales at a whopping 390 pounds!

Come and encourage our two giants on as they hit the road on a journey which usually takes approximately 45 minutes. The fun will begin at the Children’s Zoo Barn and will culminate at the tortoise exhibit which is located at the entrance to Children’s Zoo area.

The tortoises are one of only a few animals that will see many generations of visitors over their lifetime. Currently, the Zoo is fundraising for a new Adlabra Tortoise Exhibit entitled “Land of the Giants” which will be of unprecedented exhibit design.

During your visit, don’t forget to take in the newly renovated North American Aviary which has recently reopened. “The aviary has been closed for almost the entire 2008 season due to major ice storm damage to the exhibit”, Director, Neil Anderson stated. Subsequently, the exhibit has been completely renovated and the North American water fowl and bald eagle have been returned to their new home. “Visitors can expect to see over $200,000 worth of improvements to this exhibit. The North American Aviary is a unique experience for visitors. They are actually immersed into the exhibit with the free flight water fowl and an up close and personal experience with our bald eagle” stated Anderson.

Three Month Old Cubs Make Their Public Debut

After much anticipation, three of the NEW Zoo’s littlest African lion cubs have finally ventured outside to
explore their exhibit, frolic in what remains of the snow and interact with mom, Ajia.

Asani, Akeelah and Jamela can now be seen in their exhibit with Ajia on the weekend. Carmen
Murach, Curator of Animals, hopes to unite Shambe (father) with mom and cubs within the next week.
At that point, the entire pride will be available for viewing.

In a fitting tribute, the three cubs received African names, based in part, on their personalities.

Asani (a male) means ‘rebellious’
Akeelah (a female) means ‘wise’
Jamela (another female) means ‘beautiful’

“The cubs are having a fabulous time exploring the great outdoors and the nice warm weather we have
been experiencing” said Jessica Hutjens, senior zookeeper. “They seem especially interested in checking
out visitors who approach the window in the lion huts for a closer look” said Hutjens.

The NEW Zoo’s older lion cubs, Mandisa and Masamba recently made the journey to their permanent
home at the Naples Zoo in Florida. By all reports, both cubs are adapting to their environment and are
doing very well.

Stop on out and meet the adorable three month old trio! On behalf of all of our creatures, big and
small, we look forward to seeing you soon!

Lion Cubs to Call Naples Zoo “Home”

The NEW Zoo is happy to announce that six month old lion cubs Masamba and Mandisa are headed to their fabulous new home at the Naples Zoo in Florida on Monday, Feb. 2nd, 2009. Because there are only 169 genetically valuable African lions in the captive population, many zoos have been on a waiting list to participate in the breeding program. The lion Species Survival Program has approved the Naples Zoo as the lucky recipients of these cubs.

“We are thrilled to have found a home where the brother and sister team will stay
together until they are old enough (in 2 or 3 years) to be paired with mates and
produce babies of their own” stated Carmen Murach, Curator of Animals at the NEW
Zoo. In the absence of their mother, Murach was instrumental in hand raising the
cubs from birth.

The cubs will be making the trip in the Zoomobile accompanied by NEW Zoo staff.
“Because the cubs were hand raised, they are extremely adaptable, adventurous and
accustomed to new experiences. We expect their transition to their new home to go
very smoothly” said Murach. Stop by yet this weekend to wish Mandisa and Masamba
well before they embark upon their exciting new adventure.

The NEW Zoo’s younger (2 month old) lion cubs, Asani, Akeelah and Jamela
(accompanied by their mother Ajia) are expected to make their public debut in the lion
exhibit this coming week.

Sponsorship Opportunity

Chimpanzee Challenge

The NEW Zoo is currently seeking corporate sponsorship of a new and exciting educational experience. This new experience called the Chimpanzee Challenge is 2000 - 2500 sq. ft. of discovery, exploration, and fun. At the core, it is a giant themed maze. However, you’ll quickly discover there’s much more to it than simply finding your way to the end.

The Experience

Your mission: become a chimp and survive in the wild from infancy to adulthood by answering questions, dispelling myths, and revealing facts about the lives of chimpanzees.

Navigate the winding passageways of a rainforest-themed maze by answering questions and successfully reaching the four life-cycle stages from newborn to twelve-year-old adult. Correct answers lead visitors to three experience galleries that encourage role-play activities and in-depth exploration into the world and behaviors of chimpanzees. Answer incorrectly and discover dead-ends that expose the many threats facing chimpanzees in the wild.

What we need

The zoo is looking for financial support to offset the cost of bringing this wonderful experience to Northeast Wisconsin. We would like to bring this to your NEW Zoo during our peak months, June, July, and August.

New Animals at the NEW Zoo

Cougar “BB”

BB, a 7 year old female cougar, came to the NEW Zoo from the Charlestowne Landing Animal Forest in South Carolina. The zoo in South Carolina had rescued BB and another cat from a “backyard breeder” in Georgia where they had been living in a small, muddy enclosure. Now, BB roams happily amid the rocks, grass and trees in our beautiful Wisconsin Trails portion of the Zoo. Be certain to stop by and say “hello” to her as she is a cat who loves attention and will frequently answer!

Snow Leopard “Buster”

Buster, a 5 year old male snow leopard joined the NEW Zoo last week hailing from Potter Park Zoo in Lansing, Michigan. Buster is absolutely beautiful and is looking forward to our colder weather.

Prong Horn “Sundance” and “Medora”

This brother and sister duo came to us from the Great Plains Zoo in South Dakota. Sundance and Medora can be seen intermingling with the bison and elk in our gorgeous Prairie Grassland Exhibit.

African Penguin “Fat Tony” from Jersey

Tony is considered a “mail order groom” for our female African Penguin, Bobbi. The two have quickly fallen in love with Tony-another successful match courtesy of the AZA’s Species Survival Program. We are optimistic that Fat Tony and Bobbi will welcome little ones in the near future.

Curator Report: Lion Cub Update

Masamba and Mandisa are approaching their 3rd month of life and are becoming much more independent. Previously, the Animal Hospital had provided the perfect spot for visitors to get a good look at the cubs. During the first week of October, however, the cubs finally outgrew the nursery! Almost overnight, the young lions became more rambunctious and less willing to take long naps. As they are still too small to safely join the adult lions (who they continue to visit on a daily basis), they are now living in the former Sandhill Crane exhibit (past the llamas, across from the otters) where they can wrestle and play to their hearts content. The satisfaction of seeing well adjusted young lions happy to entertain themselves far outweighs the twinge of nostalgia for their more “cuddly” days!

Although the cubs are now eating the raw ground meat diet that all of our big cats are fed, they still get a bottle in the middle of the day. They no longer insist on a bedtime bottle but Masamba, in particular, really seems to appreciate the soothing effects of a bottle before his afternoon nap. Mother lions typically nurse their babies long after they have begun eating solid food. Nursing not only provides nourishment but is also important for reinforcing a sense of security and safety for the cubs.

The cubs have also taken up a new hobby – painting! It is an extremely messy endeavor but the results are impressive! Their creative artwork raised $1,000 at a recent auction.

Other Zoo News

A pair of Pronghorn from the Great Plains Zoo in South Dakota arrived in late September thanks to a generous donation from the Watermolen Foundation. Sundance and Medora will join the elk and bison in our Prairie Grasslands exhibit as soon as their quarantine period has been completed.

We are expecting the arrival of both a cougar and a snow leopard in the near future. Stay tuned for details!

N.E.W. Zoological Society Announces Official Opening of New Macaque Exhibit

N.E.W. Zoological Society Announces
Official Opening of New Macaque Exhibit

The N.E.W. Zoological Society is proud to announce the Grand Opening of the New Macaque (snow monkey) Exhibit at the NEW Zoo in Suamico on September 16th at 9:00 am.

The Macaque exhibit is made possible by a generous donation from the Elsie Jenquine Estate.

The new monkey house is much larger and provides a new tunnel and living space for the Macaques. In the wild, snow monkeys live in the mountains and hills of Japan. They are recognized by their red face and thick coat. They can live up to 30 years of age in captivity. The Macaques are social animals. They are expressive creatures because of their complex communication process which uses hand signals, body posturing and vocalizations.

The official opening ceremony is open to public with general admission.

Curator Report: New Lion Cubs

We’ve had a traumatic few weeks at the zoo recently. Lioness Ajia gave birth to the NEW Zoo’s first lion cub but, unfortunately the baby did not survive. It is not unusual for first time mothers of many species to not be successful in their first attempt at raising young. Ajia was a very attentive mother but with only one cub to care for, it appears that her over enthusiastic grooming caused a problem. The baby’s umbilical cord did not heal over properly leaving a conduit for infection. Fortunately, Ajia seemed to recover from her loss quickly and has been happy and content back out on exhibit with male lion Shambe.

Lioness Etana gave birth to 3 cubs on 7/9/08. One cub did not survive. Three days after the birth, Etana began having contractions and it became apparent that she had retained an additional cub. This cub was, of course, not alive. An emergency C- section was required to remove the cub. Sadly, after a week and a half of multiple complications from this surgery, it became clear that Etana could not recover and she was humanely euthanized. Her death was an extremely emotional event for all of the staff, volunteers and friends of the zoo who knew her well. This tragedy reminds us that, for many species, childbirth (particularly for first time mothers) is a dangerous endeavor. We take comfort in the fact that we went to extreme measures and did all we could to try to save her.

On a happier note, Etana’s little cubs are strong, healthy and growing fast! The cubs (one boy and one girl) are being bottle raised and seem very well adjusted and happy. They first began play wrestling with each other on their 2 week birthday. Distinct personalities are starting to emerge and the little girl is reminding us more of her mother every day. The babies still require a late night feeding so they come home with me (or one of our fabulous zookeepers if I need a babysitter!) every night. In the morning, before the zoo is open, the cubs go for a visit to their father Shambe and their Aunt Ajia.

Our plan is for all of the lions to know each other well when the time comes for the cubs to join the family. Visitors can see the cute little cubs in the window of our Animal Hospital every day from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm.

Curator Report: New Baby Moose

The wait is over! We’ve seen several significant animal births at the NEW Zoo in the past couple of weeks. Zookeepers discovered the brand new moose calf during their early morning check at 6 in the morning on Memorial Day. Although we didn’t witness the birth, Mom moose, Flo was still busy cleaning the baby when keepers arrived. Zoo staff, volunteers and visitors alike were on hand to witness the little one mastering the art of walking (it’s not easy with those long, gangly legs!). Because Flo is a responsible mother, she is doing a great job of keeping her calf from approaching zookeepers. As a result, we are still not sure of the baby’s sex. Because the calf is obviously healthy, active and thriving, we see no reason to upset the baby (and incur the wrath of Mom!) just to capture it for a closer look! We’ll just need to be patient for a little while longer before we decide on decorating with pink or blue!

Our Trumpeter Swans have also welcomed a new brood into the world. Visitors were able to join proud father swan, Abner in watching the progress of the hatching eggs throughout the day on Tuesday, June 3. Mother swan, Cecelia frequently rose to her feet to supervise the activity below revealing adorable fuzzy cygnets along with their not yet adorable (still wet and slimy!) siblings. By the next morning the bumper crop of 8 cygnets joined mom and dad for a swim in the pond. The NEW Zoo has been working with the Iowa DNR’s Trumpeter Swan Recovery Program for several years to ensure the survival of the species in the wild. The cygnets raised by their parents here are eventually reintroduced into the wild and are helping to save their species from extinction. Several of the swans raised here are now an integral part of the Midwestern wild breeding population.

At the NEW Zoo, we are careful to only breed animals that we know will have good permanent homes either here or at other AZA zoos. Fortunately, we are involved in several captive breeding conservation programs and can look forward to seeing a few more baby animals this season. Zookeepers are keeping a close eye on the prairie dog colony and hoping to see new babies emerging soon. Because young prairie dogs spend the first several weeks of their lives underground, it is always a pleasant surprise when they finally show themselves in early June. Although we haven’t been able to confirm pregnancies yet, we join the African Lion Species Survival Program in hoping that both Etana and Ajia will produce cubs in the not too distant future!

Curator Report: Japanese Snow Monkeys

Japanese Snow Monkey, Kisho, made the journey to his new home at the Blank Park Zoo of Des Moines on Friday. Kisho has been entertaining visitors at the NEW Zoo since his birth here three years ago. Parents of small boys of the human variety always seemed to be able to relate to the high energy level and trouble making capabilities of this little guy. Ask any staff member or visitor to pick out the naughty monkey - they always point to Kisho!

In Japanese Macaque society, the dominant male rules the troop with the help of a select group of “inner circle” male friends. In exchange for acting as both body guards and enforcers, these buddies of the leader get lots of benefits associated with high social rank. Young males in a troop can either hope to someday work their way up the ranks or they can set off with a few of their best pals to start a new troop (young females usually stay with the family group but occasionally they leave to seek their fortunes also).

Kisho happens to have a genetic makeup that is extremely important to the survival of his species (he is actually ranked as the most genetically valuable male in the captive population!). He also seems to have leadership personality traits. Eventually, Kisho along with his new sidekick will be introduced to a group of females at the Blank Park Zoo. Although Kisho is not yet mature, The Species Survival Program (SSP) for Japanese Macaques hopes that in the next several years, he will assume the leadership position of the troop and help to produce the next generation of Snow monkeys.

Here at the NEW Zoo, the finishing touches are being put on the new Japanese Macaque building and the exhibit yard is about to undergo renovation. New rockwork with a pool and waterfall is scheduled for installation in June. A see-through mesh netting across the front of the exhibit will soon give visitors an even better view of the antics of these always active animals!

Get Ready to Get Lucky

Tallulah, the 6.5 foot American Alligator, accompanied by Zookeepers Jessica Hutjens and Ryan Taylor left the NEW Zoo amid flurries of snow on April 27 to return to her home in Florida. The Keepers report that Tallulah, who has been living at the NEW Zoo on loan for the past 3 years, seemed happy to bask in the Florida sun once again. After spending a day training with the expert staff at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm and Zoological Park, our Zookeepers loaded the newest addition to the NEW Zoo family into the Zoomobile and headed for home.

Lucky, a rare albino American Alligator is not yet 5 years old and still quite small, only about 3.5 feet long. Legend says that if you look into the eyes of an albino alligator, you are lucky, indeed. It is estimated that only about 30 albino alligators exist in the world. As with many other species, albino individuals are a rare occurrence in wild alligator populations. Albino alligators can not survive in the wild because without protection from the sun, the basking reptiles quickly suffer severe burns. Any animals who manage to survive the suns rays don't blend in well with their surroundings and are easy picking for predators. In captivity, the animals can be protected from both predators and the sun and can live a normal lifespan of 60 years.

We are hoping to get lucky out this Friday, May 9th if the weather is nice! Come stop by, meet Lucky, and hopefully get some luck yourself! Get Ready to Get Lucky!

Mayan project to start changes at NEW Zoo

By Tony Walter
twalter@greenbaypressgazette.com

Zoo officials received permission from the Brown County Education and Recreation Committee to send requests for proposals for an architect, general contractor and equipment for the Mayan Taste of the Tropics food court that is expected to become a zoo centerpiece.

"It's all part of our master plan," said Maria Fisher, operations manager for the zoo. "Everything in the building will resemble Mayan ruins."

The project, financed by $600,000 in bonding approved by the County Board, will include glass walls that will give visitors a view of some of the more scenic parts of the zoo. The food court will provide seating for 125 to 150 people and enable zoo officials to move the entire food service away from the present welcome center.

"The gift shop will be expanded to include the area that was our food service," Fisher said, noting that a different area will be used for admission.

The timetable will depend on the ability to hire an architect and contractor.

Springtime in the Lion's Den

Springtime – when a young male lion's fancy turns to thoughts of love! After a long introduction period, Shambe is living the good life as the most popular guy in town in the African Lion exhibit.

Shambe, our 3 year old male lion arrived here from the Lee Richardson Zoo in Kansas (where he was born and raised) on 12/21/07. After about a month in quarantine, he was moved into the lion building and where he could begin to make friends with our 4 year old resident females. Ajia, who had previously been trying to impress the granite statue of long time NEW Zoo resident Kitty (with NO success!) was definitely interested in the new guy - but a bit apprehensive at first. After a week of closely supervised visits, the two became good friends and began spending a portion of each day together. Etana, on the other hand, is not so easy to impress and found the new roommate situation quite annoying. Fortunately, Shambe is a very easy going guy and did everything he could to obey all the rules and behave appropriately. Eventually, he managed to win her over and all three lions are now romping and playing together in the exhibit!

The NEW Zoo is a participant in the African Lion Species Survival Plan – or SSP. SSPs act as a "dating service" for various endangered species to ensure the best possible genetic matches to ensure the survival of the species. All of the NEW Zoo lions are genetically valuable so the more cubs they can produce, the better for the species! Hopefully, before long we will have an entire pride of lions! If you aren’t able to come and visit soon, make sure you check out the latest in the social lives of the lions on the NEW Zoo web cam.

Rufus, The Red Wolf Arrives!

The NEW Zoo is extremely pleased to announce the arrival of "Rufus", a highly endangered male red wolf.

Rufus hails from the Wild Canid Center in St. Louis, MO having made the trip to his new homestead on Saturday, December 8th. He will be joined shortly by another female red wolf coming to the NEW Zoo from Tacoma Washington within the next week or two. Both animals are part of a very important AZA Species Survival Program (SSP) designed to help ensure the survival of selected wildlife species. It is both the NEW Zoo's as well as the US Fish and Wildlife Service's hope that Rufus and his new mate will breed and continue in efforts to save their species from extinction.

The NEW Zoo is proud to be one of only 38 zoos and nature centers in 21 states and the District of Columbia now cooperating in a national red wolf breeding program. As such, the zoo will participate as a valuable partner in efforts to restore the red wolf population. There are only 186 captive red wolves in the world with a total population in the wild estimated at no more than 133 animals.

Bellin Health Donates Ultra Sound Equipment

NEW Zoo staff is crossing one very important and much needed piece of medical equipment off their "Wish List". And, at the same time Bellin Health has expanded its community health care services to residents it never served before - inhabitants at the NEW Zoo. The partnership centers around the generous donation of an ultrasound machine!

Thoughtful team facilitator for Bellin's ultrasound/vascular department, Mr. Jeff Monck, took a recent field trip to the NEW Zoo and took notice of the Animal Hospital at the facility. "Naturally, I was curious as to what medical equipment a zoo hospital would have, so I poked my head in to see," he said. "I noticed right away that they didn't have an ultrasound machine."

Ultrasound is a medical imaging technique used to visualize muscles, tendons and internal organs with real time images. It's used to visualize a fetus during prenatal care.

As it turns out, Monck's department recently purchased new ultrasound machines with enhanced capabilities for Bellin and was contemplating what to do with an older model ultrasound machine. "I figured we'd see if the zoo had use for our older equipment," Monck said. And, "It turns out they did. Ultrasound equipment was an item on their wish list of sorts, so the donation offered a practical and meaningful way for us to keep this machinery in use."

NEW Zoo Director, Neil Anderson, is both elated and more than appreciative. "The donation of this equipment allows us to significantly upgrade the level of care for our animal collection," he said. "What we are going to be able to do diagnostically will be absolutely amazing. The Zoo is eternally grateful to Bellin for this wonderful contribution."

Dr. Tracey Gilbert, of Brown County Veterinary Hospital and Cat Care Clinic and Zoo Veterinarian, echoed those thoughts. "Our mission is to provide the best possible care for our animals," she said. "Very few zoos our size have ultrasound capability, especially of this quality. We will be able to diagnose more quickly and accurately organ problems such as liver and kidney disease, cancer and other conditions." The new unit will help with pregnancy diagnosis and monitoring, as well. "This generous donation from Bellin Hospital will help ensure that the animals at the NEW Zoo continue to receive state-of-the-art veterinary care," Gilbert said.

The donation reflects Bellin's philosophy of being a good neighbor, said Jeff Hoeksema, Bellin imaging services team leader. "As an active partner in the Greater Green Bay community, Bellin is always seeking opportunities to directly engage community members, causes, service organizations and other businesses for the greater good of the community," he said. "It's our goal to use these opportunities to help promote a healthful, nurturing environment for all. In this case, that includes our furry, feathered and scale-skinned friends at the NEW Zoo."
