The Newaygo County Board of Commissioners recently approved an ordinance to allow ORV usage on county roads. The ordinance does not apply within the cities of Newaygo, Fremont, Grant, White Cloud, or the Village of Hesperia. Also, the ordinance does not apply to any state or federal highway or trunk-line (M-37, M-82, M-20, M-120).

The ordinance requires ORVs to be operated with the flow of traffic in a way that doesn’t interfere with other vehicles. They must be ridden single file, except when overtaking/passing another ORV. They cannot be operated faster than 25 mph or any other lower posted ORV speed. A crash helmet and approved protective eye wear must be worn unless the ORV is equipped with a roof and the operator and passenger wear properly adjusted and fastened seat belts. Lastly, they must display a lit headlight and tailight at all times.

Riders under 18 must have a valid driver’s license or be over the age of 12, be carrying an ORV certificate, and be under direct visual supervision of an adult.

The ordinance takes effect April 19, 2012. For more info, or to view a copy of the ordinance, visit www.countyofnewaygo.com and select “ORV Ordinance” in the “Spotlight” section.

It is disappointing to report that the North American Ice Fishing Circuit Tournament that was scheduled for this weekend, March 2-4, has been cancelled due to poor/unsafe ice conditions. The event was to take place on Croton Hardy Pond and the good news is that we will host the event again next year. The unseasonably warm weather this year has truly made it challenging to enjoy the winter sports that bring people into Newaygo County each year. But there’s always next year……let’s pray for cold, snowy weather!!!
