Vancouver-based songsmith David Newberry (thatnewb) and photographer Eric Newby (thisnewb) will take you on a journey, peeling back the layers to reveal the sometimes cannibalistic and most-times incestual state of the entertainment industry as it stands. Drawing from historical events they will take one song, artist, event, moment in time, and connect it back to itself by way of a convoluted web mapping which you’ll have to hear to believe. Their irreverent style is only slightly overshadowed by their love and respect for inane bull&%$!.

I wanted to focus on for NewbsRadio. In fact, focusing on this guy was one of the O.G. ideas I had when philosophizing on how NewbsRadio would work. He’s truly had one of the most amazing careers in Hollywood, though most people don’t even know who he is. Which is a crime. Or should be. So sit back and let me tell you about Frank Welker for a bit and then we’ll end up hitting oh I don’t know… Michael J Fox? And just maybe our studio will be infiltrated by an evil source? And then, just maybe we’ll have 100.5 The Peak’s James Sutton stop by just for good measure? All in all, this was a pretty fun show to put together. Hope you enjoy it! Ohhhhhhhhhh yeeeeeeah!

When preparing a Tom Petty podcast…
You’ve got to do your homework. We here at NewbsRadio celebrate the man’s entire catalog so it was pretty easy for us to wax poetic. Tom Petty is one of these guys that was meant for rocking your socks literally off, he did it in the 70s and as far as one Newb who attended the Pemberton Music Festival a few years back can tell, he’s continuing to send people to the cleaners to… clean their socks… off. Because they’ve been literally rocked… off. And the ground is dirty. That was kind of a stretch, but this episode sure isn’t – this map is rock solid – as any map including Tom Petty should be. Petty now has Tom Petty’s Buried Treasure on the ol’ XM Radio which you can listen to if you actually have satellite radio, and that got us thinking. Why would anyone have satellite radio? No really, we thought what if we were to compose a map that included only rockers who have totally rocked socks off their entire careers and who have now been blessed with their own radio shows? There’s got to be a whole schwack of them by now. And we were right.
So here it is, the DJ Tom Petty Episode of NewbsRadio. Just to catch you up, we REALLY like this music video for Tom Petty‘s “Into the Great Wide Open” so you should Deppenetly watch it as a remedial requirement of listening to this episode.

For the Nine Inch Nails Podcast…
…we had to brush up on our Canadian rock chops because we managed to fit into this week’s map, author and BidiniBand frontman Dave Bidini who, of course, spearheaded the Rheostatics. I say of course because if you don’t know who the Rheostatics are, you must have skipped the first chapter in your Canadian Rock 101 reader. So how in the world do get from Nine Inch Nails to the Rheostatics? Well let’s just say that it never would have happened without White Out™. For added confusion we somehow hit the Talking Heads, the Modern Lovers, the Minor Threat, and the Monkees for good measure.
Thanks again to Dave Bidini for helping sort all this out, you can check out BidiniBand on iTunes by way of clicking all these words you are reading now.
While you are there, you can also subscribe to this very podcast and rate us too! We love to hear your feedback on the first 20 some odd shows we have floating around cyberspace™.

The Alfred Hitchcock podcast…
…appeared to let us combine two of our favourite things ever, which is why we loved making it so much, those things: Star Trek and Playboy magazine. Yep, the two seemingly most distant pieces of matter in the entire universe can be connected through one step in our map – you’ll have to take a listen to hear what it is. Also in this episode we have NewbsRadio‘s bud, and additive manufacturing guru, Bartosz Bos. You’ll have to also take a listen to hear what this guy does for a living. We will also do the unthinkable and link Carl Sagan to Playboy magazine as well, though if you’re smart like us, you might already have an idea how we do that.
It’s an episode sans music this week, a clue to be sure to this crazy map where we start with Sir Alfred Hitchcock and end with him as if nothing ever happened except the time that has passed. We hope you enjoy that time and this episode!
We’ve had some reviews lately on the iTunes site! Thanks to: Kristalline, drludovici and local124 for your comments and ratings. It really helps us rank over on iTunes so more people can figure out what the heck we’re doing over here.
Take care!

The Wilco Podcast
We’ve been waiting SO PATIENTLY to put this episode out. We actually had it scheduled for next episode but we felt that it would have been cruel to make you wait longer. So the pieces all came together, if you remember, we went to the Wilco show, we talked with Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche, we reviewed the show and shot photos to accompany our coverage. Thank you to Wilco and their management, Glenn Kotche and his people for allowing us the time to get some great content for this episode and of course engineer/editor Rob Malowany for doing all the legwork AND coming up with the map.
But we didn’t stop there. Also appearing in this episode we have Fond of Tigers’ Stephen Lyons. The Juno award winning musician ends up saving the day as he becomes an integral part of our map as we go from Wilco to Wilco.

Welcome back! If you’re following along at home, you know that we’ve crested the fulcrum of season 1 and it’s all downhill from here. Last season we enjoyed a visit from Santa, co-host David Newberry was clinically dead for about a minute, we had Alan Cross, Dan Leroy, Lee Newby, Seema Narula, Sarah MacDougall, Corbin Murdoch, Karyn Ellis and Doctor Newbinski just to name some past guests. You can go back and listen to any of season 1 by either subscribing to our back catalog on iTunes by clicking subscribe up top, or you can single out an episode with the episode index drop down menu. It really doesn’t matter, though if you subscribe you won’t have to do anything, pixies hand deliver the episodes into your iTunes through black magic I’m sure.
So that brings us to season 2! This season we have planned some exciting new things for NewbsRadio, but you’ll have to listen to find out what I mean. In our first episode we are focusing on the classic Bill Murray comedy, What About Bob?. From there we go through Tom Hanks’ the Burbs, Dazed and Confused, Adventures in Babysitting, Airplane! to get back to What About Bob? as if by magic (see pixies reference above).
The difference this time around is that we will be accompanied for the entire ride by comedian and bonafide Episcopalian (citation needed), Vancouver‘s own, Ben Mills.
If you are a newb to NewbsRadio, if you head down to the bottom right you can like us on Facebook and/or follow us on Twitter. We tend to post to both rather regularly and love to RT funny stuff you post. So there’s that.
Looking forward to another season of NewbsRadio! Hope you are too!

Looking forward to next season? Well you should be! We have some amazing episodes and some amazing guests including comedian Ben Mills, Juno award winning Stephen Lyons from Fond of Tigers, Rheostatics‘ Dave Bidini, NPR‘s Anthony Fantano and Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche!
Thank you to everyone for checking out Season One, we’ll soon have some different looking menus on the site here, but you can always go back and re-listen to the older episodes, they are not going anywhere!
You can follow us on the twitter, and like our Facebook page with the buttons at the bottom of the screen! See you in two weeks with our What About Bob? episode!

WKRP in Cincinnati was one of the best sitcoms ever…
but if you watched it now, in it’s current form, you may notice that it’s missing something. Something say… je ne cais quoi? Well if you get the feeling you’ve been cheated, you’re bang on correct. See, WKRP in Cincinnati was set in a late 1970s radio station and the whole plot revolves around the decision to change the station’s format from easy listening to rock and roll. The show’s creator, Hugh Wilson, went to great lengths to make sure his fictional radio station had the rights to play all the biggest hits from the period to give his creation some legitimacy. The problem with that is, it costs mucho deniro to do this and over time, studios weren’t about to shell out the kind of clams it would take to keep the show on television in it’s original state. So they cut scenes, they overdubbed lines and worst of all, they replaced the music with sound-alikes.
This week on NewbsRadio we look at the music, scenes and dialogue replaced and create a map starting with the very first song lifted in the pilot episode, Ted Nugent’s Queen of the Forest.
To wet your WKRP whistle, check out the video below and hit #6 to jump ahead to the hilarity that is Les Nesman‘s ground account from the Turkey’s Away episode:

Note: the music that you hear right after Les Nesman‘s feed goes down should be “It Came Out of the Sky” by CCR.

The Concert for Bangladesh Podcast…
It all started with a phone call, it was of course 1971 and getting the word out usually involved many phone calls. Ravi Shankar was on one end of the call, the other, ex-Beatle George Harrison. A combination of civil war and natural disaster was ravaging East Pakistan in the midst of the country’s desire to split and form what is today Bangladesh. Ravi requested that George help him organize something that had never been done before on such a scale, a benefit concert with all the current rock stars, playing for free, with proceeds going to Bangladeshi relief.
This week on NewbsRadio we are talking about the Concert for Bangladesh, our conversation starts and stops with the revolutionary idea which would eventually spawn Band-Aid, Live-Aid, Farm-Aid and Chef-Aid with stops in the middle including 60s pop-culture icon Wavy Gravy, B.B. King, Eric Clapton and one of rock and roll’s lesser known muses, Chris O’Dell.
Below you can watch part of the Concert for Bangladesh including part of Ravi Shankar‘s 17 minute raga to kick off the concert.

Twas a month before Christmas…
and all through the room, Bob Geldof watching the news of Ethiopian doom.
Yeah that’s pretty much how it all started – Band Aid I mean. Soon-to-be Sir Geldof was watching a BBC special on the Ethiopian famine when he had a vision, a picture in his head, a picture of THIS! (holds up pencil sketch of the flux capacitor) no no no sorry, that’s not it. He decided that it would be a great idea to call up his bro Midge Ure and a) write a song that would become to be known as “one of the worst songs ever written”, according to Geldof himself – or/and b) to pen a ditty that would quickly become one of the fastest selling songs of the era with proceeds going to Ethiopian relief. The latter being the goal, but he ended up accomplishing both anyway.
Today on NewbsRadio we have sort of an Xmas Podcast short for you, to tide you over until we return in the new year. By the skin of our teeth we scramble together a map that takes people who were involved in the singing of “Do They Know It’s Christmas” – we even have our own Xmas miracle maybe hmmm?
Thank you to all of you who have been following us since Episode 1, we want to wish you the happiest of happy good times this holiday season. But remember that Christmas was invented by Coke and The Coca-Cola Company offers more than 500 brands in over 200 countries, besides its namesake Coca-Cola beverage. So, however you celebrate, Coke’s got you covered. Amen.
Take care.

There comes a time in every young man’s life, where he has to see a dead body. Stephen King knew this of course, being the sick bastard that he is, and so he wrote a book called Stand By Me. Rob Reiner put down a hoagie just long enough to done got his hands on it and turned it into the coming of age film classic that it is today. All the kids grow up to be either more alive or not alive, all within some degree of notoriety and the rest, as they say, is history.
This week on NewbsRadio we are going from Stand By Me to Stand By Me with some incredible stops in between including a talk with, broadcaster, writer, and the self-professed professional music geek himself, Alan Cross. You can find all things Alan Cross on alancross.ca and his podcast can be subscribed to by way of The ExploreMusic Podcast.
Thanks for standing by us and checking out episode 12 and be prepared for next week we are releasing our Christmas Special episode then we’ll take a short break for Christmas. The new year promises to be fruitful: Concert of Bangladesh, WKRP, Pee-Wee’s Playhouse just to name a few of the upcoming episodes!

Paul’s Boutique is…
now one of the most respected rap albums of all time, it just took some time for everyone to take notice. Critically hailed as genius but too different than their debut “License to Ill” to be commercially viable the album was branded a bonafide flop. At it’s root, it was a sampling masterpiece which came out at a time before landmark cases against the use of sampling made it economically impossible to ever compile and release an album quite like Paul’s Boutique ever again. It was unabashedly ahead of its time – a gamble by the Beastie Boys and their new label Capitol Records which would take more than a decade to pay off.
Today on NewbsRadio we celebrate the album for what it is – a veritable buffet of soul, funk, jazz, rock and rap samples laid underneath the voices of three young men vying to cancel out the sophomore jinx. In keeping with our NewbsRadio format, our Paul’s Boutique map starts with the very first track on the album and by way of the samples used on Paul’s Boutique, we end up on the last thing you hear on the album. If you don’t already know, that happens to be the same song – making Paul’s Boutique an exquisite choice for a NewbsRadio podcast.
For his expert and first hand expertise we talk with author Dan LeRoy who wrote the most definitive book on Paul’s Boutique – 33 1/3 Paul’s Boutique. Dan reveals that during the writing of the book he unearthed some key players in the Paul’s Boutique history like Matt Dike - we find out just who this guy was and his integral role on the record. On the subject of samples we break down just what was sampled, how many samples there were and at the end of the day were they cleared at all? If you enjoy Paul’s Boutique, Dan’s book is a must read which you can buy off of amazon.com for like $15.
And just in case you are wondering, that give away IS legit and we will keep our promise and send you a prize if you are the first to get us a valid station ID via email at contest@newbsradio.com.
So sit back, relax, and enjoy as this episode will make you want to get this classic album out and listen to it again, for the first time.

Appetite for Destruction
Considered to be Guns n’ Roses‘ opus. One of the biggest selling albums of all time and certainly one of the releases that helped stomp out the hair metal movement of the 80s. It was arguably top of the heap at a time when the music industry was on the defence after Tipper Gore and the Parents Music Resource Center movement tried and failed to stop albums like Appetite from being released in the first place.
This week on NewbsRadio we take a look at the Guns n’ Roses classic Appetite for Destruction and you won’t believe where it takes us. Seriously, we touch on Buddy Holly, the Cars, Timothy Hutton and Tibetan freedom as we wrap around back to Appetite. We also have an interview with Shockk Mongoose from the East-Vancouver based band, Mongoose. He recalls the first time he met ex-Guns n’ Roses drummer Steven Adler when his band opened up for Adler’s most recent musical project, Adler’s Appetite. Mongoose were nice enough to let us air their track Mr. Skeleton too! Thanks guys! Check them out at mongooseeastvan.com.
As always, we comprised a soundtrack on Grooveshark.com so you can hear examples of what the heck we’re even talking aboot. http://ow.ly/7g0x1
Finally, I mentioned a pink llama, and so I am sure you’ll want to know what I meant by that. Actually, what I meant was, Grass Mud Horse:

Hamilton to Hamilton
Sometimes it’s best to go with what you know. And since we don’t know anything about Hamilton Ontario we were lucky enough to know Hamilton blogger Seema Narula from thismustbetheplace.ca to help us fill in the blanks. We touch on the great city of Hamilton and somehow end up filling your head with Phil Collins and his triumphant drum fills along the way. Beyond that, this map is ripe with classic, innovative guitar players, Robertson, Clapton, Fripp, and Lanois. Also, this weeks Hamilton graphic was given to us by NewbsRadio listener and Hamilton native, Steve Newberry, so thanks Steve, looks great! If you want to submit a graphic of your own for any of the following topics, be our guest! You let us know at thisnewb@newbsradio.com and we’ll get you the design specs.
Our next NewbsRadio podcast will drop November 2nd will be based on the Guns and Roses classic Appetite for Destruction. Then we’ll look back on the way-too-short life of Richie Valens on November 16th followed by a NewbsRadio Short on November 25th where we will be celebrating the 35th anniversary of The Band Thanksgiving Day Farewell show better known as the greatest concert film ever, Martin Scorsese‘s, The Last Waltz.
We’ll most likely take a break for Christmas but you can bet we will have some great shows in the new year. Paul’s Boutique, Concert for Bangladesh, Stand by Me the Motion Picture, hokey smudge! A lot of ground to cover – so keep listening! The podcast broke a new milestone this week with over 1,500 listens from the website, which doesn’t even include our subscribers on iTunes! Wow! Thank you!

Last week we had our “friends” pick a bunch of different place names for us to draw out of a hat. We agreed to each choose one and form a map around that particular place. Eric ended up pulling Sweden and David pulled Hamilton which will be coming up next next week. This week, we are heading to the land of the the ice and snow, you know the one with the midnight sun and where the hot springs flow – it’s good for the skin. Because honestly, the hammer of the Gods should really drive our ships to new lands – it’s the least they can do, to, of course fight the horde, all the while, singing and crying. Valhalla we are coming over for beers later so clean up a bit kay?
This week also marks a milestone in production for the ol’ NewbsRadio. We have MUSIC in today’s podcast. Sweden’s own Sarah MacDougall sits down with David Newberry and tells us her side of Sweden, she spent her first 19 years there dontchaknow? Then she is nice enough to play us a tune from her new record. You can find out all about Sarah on sarahmacdougall.com.
We put together another playlist to accompany this week’s playlist on the grooveshark, you can find it here: http://ow.ly/6JdDJ

Who knew that after being hit by a car, Brian Eno would invent a genre? That genre is what has become to be known as Ambient and Eno not only pioneered it, he also invented the word to describe it. In this episode of NewbsRadio we go from start to finish with the 1978 Brian Eno record, Ambient 1: Music for Airports. Through our map we touch on things like Mike Myers‘ movies, Marc Maron’s podcast and good old fashioned American lager. It’s all in there folks. Take a listen and let us know what you think. Take care.
