1. Travel
There is no better time to travel extensively than in early retirement. Keep in mind that traveling doesn't have to break the bank. Did you always have an interest in birds or flowers, but never have the time to really learn about them? Retirees can take up many hobbies in retirement, among them a newfound appreciation for outdoor activities. While hiking up a mountain would probably not be recommended by your doctor, going for a stroll on a boardwalk through wetlands is good exercise and interesting from an environmental standpoint.

9. Teach
Whatever you did before retirement, you can teach it to the younger generation. Or, teach one of your hobbies, such as knitting or baking. Adult education programs are frequently looking for part-time evening instructors for these types of courses, and while they don't produce a full-time income, teaching these types of classes can be a perfect activity for retirees.

10. Reconnect with Family
Life is busy, but retirement offers a reprieve from the rat race. Write letters and send pictures to relatives who live far away, or go visit them more often. Get a webcam for your computer so you can chat with grandchildren who live far away.

When selling your home, think “out of the box”. Try to imagine what others will see and focus on when they walk into your home. To help with this, become a home shopper. Go look at model homes, or visit a neighbor. What strikes you first when you enter this home? What do you notice as a positive or a negative aspect?

Helpful Hints on what potential buyers may notice:
1. How does the exterior of the home present itself? Is the lawn mowed and edged, are flower beds weeded, or better yet: ARE there flower beds? Is the home clean, freshly painted, and are the windows sparkling clean? Is the driveway free from stains?

2. First impressions are exactly that – FIRST (only once can this happen) IMPRESSIONS (these can last a LONG time). They speak volumes! Does a pet odor meet you when you open the door? Is there evidence of a caged dog or cat living in the home? Is it obvious there is a full litter box in need of emptying? What about a musty smell? Check the bathrooms and kitchen under the sinks; carpets, ceilings and walls throughout the home for water marks.

3. Vivid colors on walls are great when you have decorated the home to express YOUR personality. Others may see them as more work to do to make the home express THEIR style. Tone the colors down. Let the buyer see the structure and design of the walls and floor plan of your home, not JUST the walls!

4. Does your home look like you take care of it? Signs that would say, ‘not so much’ are: Holes in walls and old wallpaper. Patch walls, take down the dated wallpaper and bring your home into 2010! Let’s talk about clutter! Arrange your furniture to compliment the room. Too much furniture in one room takes away from showing the size and versatility of the room. Put away magazines (they don’t have to know your interests here either), take down family pictures from side tables, coffee tables, dressers, etc. Let the potential buyer envision THEIR family pictures in these places. Put a plant or flower arrangement in place of the pictures!

5. Sports fan? Like the Tampa Bay Bucs? Have all their memorabilia displayed? Great you are passionate about them. However, your potential buyer may be REALLY turned off to that! Don’t let a simple sport affiliation be the reason to loose a buyer. Take down your beloved team memorabilia – you can do this… it won’t be as painful as you may think…

6. Kitchen clean up. Dirty dishes in the sink do not portray a “lived in look” as one may think. It shows neglect to keeping a clean home and paying attention to detail. Countertops should be cleared off, to show ALL the work space you DO have in your lovely kitchen! Clean your stove and oven - greasy grime just makes the potential buyer wonder what dirt they CAN'T see.

Yes, it does take work to make your home presentable to sell! More importantly, if you want the most price out of your home, it is well worth creating an environment where one will not easily find reasons to offer you less on buying your home!

Many Uses of Digital Cameras

Digital cameras are handy little gadgets to have on you. They're definitely not just for taking family snapshots anymore! Let's explore some of the ways they can help out in a pinch:

1. Flashlight. As I've just noted, digital cameras make a pretty decent light source when you get stuck.
2. Insurance record backup. Take photos of each room of your home, with close-ups of individual items. In the event of a theft (or a worse catastrophe such as a house fire), those digital files might be invaluable for detailing what you lost. Just keep a backup in another location!
3. Stand-in scanner. Take photos of important documents such as birth and marriage certificates, driver's licenses, health insurance cards, credit cards and debit cards. Store your pics in a safe location along with your insurance records. Who needs a separate scanner?
4. Mini license plate. Take a shot of your vehicle's license plate. Print it and trim to fit in your wallet. What a clever way to keep your tag number handy! You'll never have to traipse out to the car again.
5. Original art. Your photos can be altered and edited for artistic effect to produce unique pieces of art. Play around with Photoshop. Have fun. Maybe you'll end up with something frame-worthy.
6. Travel mirror. Now here's a clever one: let your camera be your travel mirror when you're camping or staying at a hostel. Check out your reflection in the camera's LCD screen when the camera is off, or take a snapshot of yourself and review for bad hair, parsley in teeth, etc.
7. Clock. More than once I've forgotten both my cell phone and my watch ... and been saved by my camera. Click through the settings, and most likely you will find the correct time and date.
8. Passport and business card photos. Take your own photo. It's free! Just make sure to use a very well-lit location with a neutral background.
9. Clip art. Be your own free stock photo source. If you own an even halfway decent digital camera you're good to go. Use shots for presentations, blog posts and tons of other uses.
10. Record business meetings. That built-in video camera can be used for more than just birthday parties. Use it to document work events or meetings, for example.
11. How-to records. Working on anything painstaking that you might want to recreate down the line? Take photos to help you remember just how you achieved that magical effect with a Christmas tree or Thanksgiving table setting.  Similarly, take step-by-step shots of anything you dismantle that contains many parts. If you get confused during the reassembly phase, just refer to the photos for a reminder of what goes where.
12. Digital Camera as Periscope - Oops -- you think you heard something fall but you're not sure. Reach behind an appliance, inside a crevice or into a dark corner and take a digital picture so you can see what's going on there first. That way, you can avoid any unnecessary heavy lifting.
13. Parking lot SOS. Do you invariably forget where you parked your car in those huge public lots? Take a snapshot of the location and level number just in case you get lost on the way back. It might save you a ton of walking.
14. House buying/renting. It's hard to keep track of the details when your agent has taken you to view several houses in one day. Take snapshots of each one to compare and discuss later. Same goes when shopping for other large purchases, like furniture.  Once you've agreed to buy or rent a property, there's usually a delay before you can actually move in. In the interim, those snaps will be a huge help as you visualize where to put your furniture and which rooms need repainting.
15. Digital Camera as Reference Tool - Starting a project that requires you to disassemble something -- say removing a plumbing obstruction, cleaning an oscillating fan, or replacing your vacuum cleaner's drive belt? Snap some photos of the intact piece, then snap several more during the course of the dismantling. This way, when you're ready to reassemble, you can scroll backwards through the images on your digital camera to guide you.
16. In a car crash? If you're able, take pictures of all the vehicles involved just in case of an insurance dispute later.
17. Subway or stadium map. Take one good photo of the entire map. You can refer to it again and again, zooming in and out as needed.
18. Before checking your suitcases at the airport, take a photo. You never know, it may help the relocation effort if they go walk-about due to mishandling.
19. Hotel or hostel name difficult to pronounce? Take a picture of the building and maybe the nearby street signs. If you're in a foreign country, it might be easier to show your taxi driver a photo of your hotel rather than trying to pronounce the name and location.
20. Traveling with kids? Take a snapshot of your child each morning once they're dressed for the day. If you get separated, the photo will be invaluable for showing to passersby or the authorities.
21. Avoid rental car scams. Take extensive photos of any rental car before you've driven it. Use the date/time stamp on your camera, too.
22. Photocopy fliers. Forget trying to remember all the details of that concert or yard sale. Just take a snapshot for later.
23. Digital Camera as Label Maker -Plastic shoe boxes are a great way to organize your closet -- but then you have to go through twenty boxes to find the one pair of shoes you want to wear. Instead, take a digital picture of each pair, print them from your home office and mount each image of the outside of its respective box. You'll find the pair you're looking for easily -- and you won't feel so guilty for having so many shoes.
24. Digital Camera as Magnifying Glass - Eyes not what they used to be? Even if you've got perfect vision, the zoom function on a digital camera can make things much more crisp than the naked eye can. Keep your digital camera handy while you DIY, and take a picture of that little detail or that very fine print. Then zoom in all the way.

Trashing old credit cards? Be careful!

In a world of escalating identity theft, one man's trash is another man's excuse to help himself to a new line of credit. Making a few halfhearted snips with the scissors to your old credit cards just won't cut it anymore. Dumpster divers intent on looking for account numbers do not need much. Experts say even shredded cards can be pieced together by an earnest thief.
"Anything you put out on the street, you're saying, 'Have at it,'" said Jim Stickley, the author of "The Truth About Identity Theft" and a security expert who has done more than his share of picking through trash to identify security breaches for corporate clients.
Much of the identity theft that touches millions of Americans each year could can be prevented with a few simple measures that take less than a minute. Here are six tips for doing it right:

1. Properly cut up your credit cards

Scissors can do a fine job of destroying a credit card -- provided you use them correctly.
After suffering from several cases of both credit card and identity fraud, blogger Jim Wang of Bargaineering.com developed a system for cutting his cards that involves slicing each set of four numbers into six pieces. Make sure you also cut through your signature and the magnetic stripe on the card.

2. Completely shred your cards and documents

Shredders can also do the trick, but be sure your shredder is designed to handle credit cards and has a crosscutting function. Such machines are typically twice the price of a normal shredder but still less than $100 -- worth the price to protect your credit.

3. Destroy magnetic stripes and chips

Wang recommends taking an extra step to deactivate a card's magnetic stripe and, if there is one, its RFID chip. To scramble the data in the magnetic stripe, run a very strong magnet along it.
Apply scissors or a hammer to the chip embedded in the card, as "all the information stored on the card is also stored on the magnetic stripe and the chip," Wang said. This takes just a few extra seconds.

4. Trash tip: Bag the pieces separately

To prevent curbside identity theft, deposit the pieces of your destroyed credit card into different trash cans around your house. The idea is that some receptacles are emptied more frequently than others, so if half of your destroyed credit card goes to the curb with the kitchen trash one week, the other half will go out with your office trash a different week. This makes it nearly impossible for a thief to piece together your entire account number.

5. The recycling myth: It's not safer than trash

It's an unexplainable yet prevalent myth that recycling bins are somehow safer than trash bins for credit cards, statements and other sensitive documents, Stickley said. They are not. At a recycling center, materials pass through a conveyor belt, and employees pick through items to make sure only recyclable materials get through. Stickley said confidential information could easily be taken off the conveyor belt by someone who's looking for it.
If you want to recycle an item containing your account information, shred it first -- preferably with a crosscut shredder -- and follow the steps for bagging the pieces separately for maximum security.

6. Fire: The foolproof method

Of course, one way to completely eliminate any chance of credit card or identity theft is to incinerate all card-related documentation. Though it might not be the most Earth-friendly activity, credit cards can be melted down, and credit card statements, applications and blank checks from credit card companies can be burned. "We use our bills for kindling. All our bills go into a bag right next to our fireplace," Stickley said.

With average identity fraud losses hovering around $5,000 per person, taking a minute to destroy your credit cards and sensitive documents is a no-brainer. Turns out that if you get creative with your methods, it can actually be pretty fun, too.

Tips for Remembering Names

Is remembering names a challenge for you? It sure is for me. Sometimes I feel incredible embarrassment when I have forgotten the name of a person who was introduced to me 30 seconds ago. If you suffer from "can't remember names syndrome," consider the following tips.

1. Give your full attention to the introduction. Don't get caught shaking the hand of a new acquaintance with one eye on someone else in the room. Give the person you're meeting your full attention. Make the person feel important by making the introduction important to you.

2. Listen carefully and repeat the name immediately and then a time or two more in the first 60 seconds following the introduction. Verbal repetition helps reinforce a new name in your memory, and gives you the opportunity to rehearse or double-check difficult pronunciations.

3. Think of someone with the same name: A relative, friend, coworker, etc. Associate this person with your new acquaintance.

4. Form an immediate association with the name and the person's outstanding feature or trait. Whether it's flattering or not, the first association you make with a person is the best tool you can use for remembering the name. Hair color, tone of voice, style of clothing or even height are all effective associations.

5. As the conversation continues, continue to occasionally use the person's name. This will test your memory and establish closer ties with an individual. "I couldn't agree with you more, Joe," or "You know, Sue, I heard a funny story about that" are both examples of individualized conversation that sounds friendly and not forced.

6. If you forget a name or didn't hear it the first time, don't fake it ... ask by saying something like, "I'm sorry, but please tell me your name again." Most people would prefer to repeat their names rather than correct a wrong guess. Politely asking for a reminder may be awkward, but it will be appreciated. If the name is particularly difficult to retain or pronounce, ask for a spelling.

7. Don't make excuses. No one wants to hear "I'm terrible with names" or "I meet so many people in a day." Excuses like these can make even the most important person feel insignificant in your eyes.

8. If you're speaking to someone new over the telephone, jot down the name on a piece of paper to make sure you don't forget the name.

9. When your conversation ends, whether on the telephone or in person, also make a note of the person's name and organization and jot down enough information about the individual to jog your memory later when you get back to your office or to your home.

Full attention during new introductions is the key to keeping names from slipping your mind. Take the time to fully focus on anyone you're about to meet. The time to recognize an important contact is before you forget the name, not afterwards!

In Florida, Newby Realty is affiliated with over 40 manufactured home communities. The communities are categorized in the following way: “55+” land lease, land owned or resident owned or “all age” (family) land lease.

The most common question asked is, “What is the difference between land lease and a land owned manufactured home community?” Land lease is when you buy the home but rent the land it is on. Each month there is a lot rent (also known as a lot lease) fee. Water, sewer, basic cable, lawn care, trash pick up, AND maintenance of the community are options this fee may include, depending on the community. Each community has their own list of inclusions.

The next common question is, “What is the difference between a resident owned community and a land owned community?” This gets a little more into the nitty-gritty of the explanations. In a land owned community, you own the land and usually have a deed for the land. You only pay a monthly maintenance fee because you are not leasing land in this community. (Inclusions of what this fee includes vary between each community.)

In a resident owned community, one may own a share of the community. This means you own part of the community. This type of community gives one an option to own a share or not. Typically, when one owns a share, they do not pay a lot lease but they do pay a monthly maintenance fee.

Here is where it gets a bit sticky: If you do not own a share, then most commonly, you are leasing the land your home is on in a resident owned manufactured home community. The monthly fee is higher than if you owned a share. This is because you are paying maintenance fees AND a lot lease fee. When one buys a home in a resident owned manufactured home community, the option is there to buy a share at the time of purchase of a home OR anytime afterwards. The value of a share varies but in our communities, it’s most commonly in the range of $55,000. This is like buying land in that there is a property tax on it.

In our Newby Realty listings, our home prices will indicate if the price of a home in a resident owned community INCLUDES a share or not. If a home is priced WITH the share, one must understand this is how it must be purchased: the home WITH the share. IF a home is priced not including a share, one MAY purchase the share separately, at any time after the purchase of the home.

Another popular question: "What is the age differences between an all age (family) manufactured home community and a 55+ community?" In a 55+ community, one person living in the home must be age 55 or older. Typically, the other persons living in the home cannot be younger than 45. In a family community, all ages are allowed to live in the home.

Note: Many use the terms "mobile home" and manufactured home" interchangeably.

     Death Valley hits an average high temperature of 120 degrees in the summer, and it is the lowest and driest spot in the world. According to park rangers, approximately 3 people die here every year from exposure. But try not to let these statistics discourage you from visiting Death Valley. Millions come year-round to soak in the sun, have an organized hike and take in the beauty of this vast, open landscape.

9. Columbia River Gorge, Oregon - East of Portland, OR, flows the Columbia River Gorge. In 1916, the first highway ever built in the United States was constructed along the cliffs of the Columbia River, no doubt so that travelers could take in the beautiful views. The Columbia River region has 1 of the highest concentrations of waterfalls in the United States. It's home to the second-highest year-round flowing waterfall in the United States, Multnomah Falls, which stands an eye-popping 620 feet high.      Aside from the obvious reason 1.5 million visitors come to the Arches National Park each year, the park also brings in the adventurous traveler. Extreme mountain biking was born at Arches. Slick Rock Trail is 9 miles of heart-pounding adventure, a trail etched out of slippery sandstone that can be deadly for the inexperienced cyclist.
     Arches National Park lies right in the middle of a desolate, treacherous and demanding landscape. Temperatures can easily each into the hundreds, making an afternoon walk or ride feel like a trip into a preheated oven.

7. Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico - Roughly 750 feet below New Mexico's Guadalupe Mountains exists a maze of tunnels that is the state's number 1 tourist destination. Visitors venture into the damp and dark just for a glimpse of another world and its inhabitants.
     Of the 300 known caves in the Guadalupe Mountains, 120 of them are in Carlsbad National Park. Created by 500,000 years of dripping water, the caverns consist of 30 miles of vaulted halls and maze-like passages adorned with dazzling formations and colors of iridescent pinks, beiges and tans. The largest cavern, named the Big Room, is a colossal chamber that could fit 6 football fields and reaches as high as a 30-story skyscraper.
     Aside from the grandeur of the cave, visitors also come to see the residents of the caverns -- bats. For 5,000 years, the Mexican freetailed bats have come soaring out of the cave each evening in search of night flying insects.
     If all the walking and hiking of the 75 stories of cavernous cave makes you hungry, an elevator will carry you from the cavern floor to the outside world in 58 seconds flat. However, if you desire to stay below ground a bit longer, the Carlsbad Caverns lunchroom is sure to satisfy your appetite.

6. Channel Islands National Park, California - Only accessible by boat, the Channel Islands are located 90 miles off the coast of Los Angeles. Consisting of 177 miles of coastline, these 5 islands; often referred to as America's Galapagos, are decorated with rocky cliffs, arches, and beaches populated by 2,000 plants and animals, including sea lions and pelicans. One hundred and fifty of the animals found on the islands are found in no other place in the world.
     Channel Islands National Park is considered one of the top destinations for scuba divers. Its waters are home to 17 different species of sharks, including the great white. But that threat doesn't stop the divers, who flock there from all over the world.

5. Mount Hood, Oregon - Since its last eruption 250 years ago, this beautiful, dormant volcano has been a paradise for hikers and skiers. A great combination of beauty and danger, Mount Hood is the second-most climbed peak in the world. During climbing season, you can expect roughly 200 people a day. These include skiers and snowboarders, who can take advantage of many of the mountain's slopes until the Fourth of July. With so many people climbing, skiing and playing in the park's 189,000 acres each year, it's important for everyone to be careful. The unique landscape of Mount Hood is especially treacherous.
     After a long hike or a day of skiing, make sure to visit the historic Timberline Lodge to rest and warm up. Constructed in 15 months and built in the height of the Great Depression, this lodge displays the handiwork of over 300 craftsmen.

4. Redwoods National Park, California - The redwoods of Northern California the oldest living things on Earth and the main attraction at this national park. What's most unique about this attraction is that you can experience 2 natural wonders in one place -- the forest and the ocean.
     Roughly 300,000 visitors come to Redwoods National Park each year to experience the grandeur of these giant trees. Coastal fog and cool, moist air keeps the trees damp, a perfect condition for their growth. The trees measure from 8 to 20 feet around and can grow as tall as a 35-story building. They live an average of 600 years, but some of the trees have been known to reach the ripe old age of 2,200 years old!

3. Yosemite National Park, California - Nestled within the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Yosemite National Park greets nearly 4 million visitors each year. A glacier-carved canyon, Yosemite was the first territory in the United States set aside for public use. Filled with meadows, cliffs, waterfalls and forests, the park is also home to the fifth tallest waterfall in the world.
    The best way to see Yosemite is on foot, as the park has over 800 miles of trails. However, this hike is not for the faint of heart. Yosemite ranges from 2,000 feet to 13,000 feet! The park's most famous attraction is Half Dome; carved from granite by glaciers and millions of years of erosion, it stands 4,000 feet above the valley. Visitors can see Half Dome from Glacier Point, or they can hike to its peak in one day. Yosemite's second lookout, El Capitan, fondly known as El Cap, is officially the largest monolith of granite in the world.

Yellowstone National Park - The first national park of the United States, Yellowstone covers over 2.2 million acres of the American West, filling it with spectacular mountain scenery, animals and endless natural beauty. But did you know that this park also lies on top of 1 of the most dangerous volcanoes in the United States? In researching the geological history of the park, scientists have recorded 3 major eruptions more powerful than any in the world's recorded history, and they all happened at Yellowstone. The eruptions toppled a mountain range and left a crater the size of the Los Angeles basin. Moreover, the volcano that sits underneath this beauty is still alive. But that little detail doesn't stop nearly 2 million visitors from coming to the park each year.
The main attraction at Yellowstone is Old Faithful. A result of a volcanic eruption, Old Faithful has expelled gallons of boiling water over 180 feet in the air.
    Herds of buffalo and elk roam freely in Yellowstone. Visitors also spot the occasional grizzly bear. Just as in any national park, there are safety rules to follow: hike with a group, never go near a bear and her cubs, and most importantly stay away from bear dens.

1. The Grand Canyon, Arizona - The Colorado River started its work on the Grand Canyon over 20 million years ago. So far the result is a 1-mile-deep, 10-mile-wide and over 1 million-acres-long canyon. A magnificent example of erosion, the Grand Canyon was formed by water cutting through layers of rock for millions of years.
     One of the best spots to hike is along the rim. For more adventurous travelers, the Colorado River offers some rip-roaring whitewater rapids. In any event, visitors should be aware of the apparent dangers when exploring as there are no railings and protective barriers along the entire canyon.

Keep Exterior Looking New on Your Manufactured Home

Regular maintenance will keep your siding looking new and lasting longer. Why is it so important to regularly maintain your siding? Like the skin on your body, there are two main purposes that siding fulfills– appearance and protection. It protects your home against natural elements and pests, adds stability to the frame of your home, helps insulate and it also adds character to the outside of the home. Although there are several different types of siding you can choose from for manufactured homes, the three most popular include metal siding, like aluminum or steel, vinyl siding or a natural wood siding. And each kind of material needs to be maintained differently.

Washing
(Note: Don’t wash wood siding. Heavy exposure to water might result in decay, chipping, bowed or expanded panels, disintegration or shrinkage. Read below to learn about proper maintenance for wood siding.)

Give your home a good washing for a fresh new look.
Make sure you close all the windows, doors and vents.
Cover anything on the house you don’t want to get wet. Use plastic bags and tarps with duct tape to cover bushes, outdoor furniture and light fixtures.
Attach a soft car-washing brush to your garden hose and wash off the dirt.
Remove tree sap and any other stubborn stains. First soak the sap with raw linseed oil, mineral spirits, or auto bug and tar remover. Let stand until soft. Wipe with a clean cloth.
You can use household detergent to clean the siding or purchase a cleaning compound specifically for your siding material. Several varieties are available at manufactured home supply stores.
Wash your siding from top to bottom to keep the lower area wet, preventing detergent lines.
Rinse off the cleaner. Attach a spray nozzle to your hose to increase water pressure.
Dry the siding with a towel from the top down.

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl’s durable surface makes it the easiest siding to maintain. It won’t rot, peel or show scratches because good quality vinyl siding permeates its color throughout the entire thickness of the panel. Although vinyl is virtually maintenance free, keep your siding in the best condition to make its lifetime last even longer.

Don’t rely on a rainstorm to keep your siding clean. Give it a good cleaning at least once a year to keep sediment and grime off its surface.
Replace any damaged panels. New panels are quick and easy to install.
If your vinyl siding has a wood grain or pebble finish, it will hold dirt and require more frequent washing.
If you do not have rain gutters, your house will need more frequent cleaning.
Rubbing compound scratches vinyl surfaces.
Vinyl siding is brittle in very cold weather. Be careful not to hit or strike it, or it might shatter.
Keep grills from vinyl. Exposing the vinyl to intense heat will melt the siding.

You might think that a paint job would be an inexpensive and easy solution to make faded vinyl siding look like new again. But paint does not hold well to vinyl’s surface because it continuously changes with the weather. Vinyl soaks up heat causing expansion and contraction as temperatures rise and fall. Instead of a short-term painting job, consider replacing your siding altogether. Check with a several retailers to see the variety of colors and textures to choose from. Ask them about lifetime warranties or guarantees that they offer.

Aluminum Siding

Keep aluminum siding looking like new with a regular cleaning every six months to prevent oxidation and/or corrosion over time. For metal siding, oxidation and corrosion are common problems that wear and tear at the outside of your home. Taking care of these problems as soon as they occur could save you from having to replace your siding altogether.

Corrosion

Corroded areas leave dark spots on the siding. These are caused by moisture being exposed to the metal surface for extended periods. Check for rust-colored stains in places that tend to stay wet longer, such as under eaves or recessed entryways. If you find corroded areas, be sure to get rid of the spots before they spread further. For both aluminum and steel siding, sand out the corrosion blisters down to the bare metal, then spot prime with an anti-rust primer.

Oxidation

Oxidation leaves a white chalky film on the siding that can dull the exterior of your home. Keep your siding clean to prevent oxidation from forming. If your siding looks faded from oxidation, contact a professional manufactured home washer. A professional can clean your house in less than an hour with high-pressure hoses.

Overcome Adult Peer Pressure

After spending a year writing our newest book Living With Less So Your Family Has More, my husband and I (Jill Savage) have really been thinking about the reality of adult peer pressure. The words “peer pressure” usually refer to the pressure to conform that teenagers experience. But if we’re honest, peer pressure doesn’t stop after the teen years… it continues right on into adulthood.

If we’re not aware of the demand to conform, we’ll likely find ourselves pressured into a lifestyle that requires we work more to give our family more. At the end of our life, though, what we give our family materially isn’t nearly as important as what we give our family relationally. Bigger isn’t necessarily better. Less really can be more.

We can’t resist peer pressure if we don’t recognize it’s there. Watch out for these types of adult peer pressure:

Pressure to have debt—Our culture seeks immediate gratification. We want what we want when we want it… even if we have to pay double the price in interest to have it. Believe it or not, there are middle class people who pay cash for a car, refuse the concept of 12 months same as cash, and other than having a mortgage for a home would never take out a loan for anything.

Pressure to give our kids every possible opportunity—In our activity centered life too many of us forget that the best opportunity we can give our kids is simply the opportunity to be a kid. In the preschool years, our kids need to play in the backyard sandbox rather than on an organized sports team.

Pressure to move up the corporate ladder---We have to weigh carefully how much time and energy we want to pour into our career, especially if it will take away from our family. There are those who resist this pressure and choose to step off the corporate ladder. Yes, it limits their earning power, but it increases their availability to their family.

Pressure to live in the right neighborhood and drive the right car---Too often we allow ourselves to be defined by things that we could lose in the blink of an eye…especially in the economic challenges we’ve experienced over the past few years. Those who resist this peer pressure may drive older cars and live in a house and neighborhood they can easily afford.

Adult peer pressure is real, it’s controlling, and it will influence us far more than we realize. Join me in considering the impact cultural expectations have on your thinking. And if you’re so inclined, join those of us who believe that you can live with less and actually give your family more.

Downsizing A Home

You are moving into a smaller home. Your large home items cannot fit into the new home. Below are a few suggestions on how to get started on downsizing, what to do with all you have, and tips for keeping things peaceful.

How to Get Started
•Start with the rooms you use the least: In most family homes there are rooms that are not always used on a daily basis, such as guest bedrooms, basements, or living rooms. Start the sorting process in these rooms and avoid cluttering the areas of the home used regularly.
•Start with large items: In order to feel you are making progress, in each room start with the largest items and move towards the smallest. For example, identify what you will do with the furniture before you start on the knick-knacks.
•Have a sorting system: Sort items by using stickers, making piles, or making detailed lists of what will be kept, what will be given away and to where, and what is still undecided.
•Write down family history: Take the time to write down special memories or any family history that is connected to special items. This information will be cherished for generations to come and will contribute to the value of family heirlooms.
•Work in scheduled blocks of time: Plan to sort items for periods of no more than two hours at a time. The process of revisiting memories and making decisions about items you have lived with for many years can be emotionally difficult. You will feel less overwhelmed and make better decisions if you take regular breaks and allow yourself time to digest what is happening.
•Start early and don't rush yourself: Be sure to plan plenty of time for the sifting and sorting process. Take moments to laugh at old pictures, read old letters, and grieve for losses. If you can�t decide what to do with an item, set it aside and return to it later. Work at a pace that is comfortable for you and your situation.

What to Do With All This Stuff
•Keep the items that you treasure the most: Make a list of items you refuse to part with and keep that list in sight as you sort through other possessions. You may need to amend this list as you come across new things but it will remind you that everything is not of equal value.

•Consider bequeathing items now: Identify those items you want certain family members to have and consider what items you are willing to bequest now. Remember, you may get more pleasure out of seeing your granddaughter enjoy your china at the next family event than knowing she will have it after you are gone.
•Get rid of things you no longer need: Be realistic about what items you use regularly and what items you are just used to having around. The electric carving knife you use at Thanksgiving may not be as necessary as the toaster oven you use every morning.
•Consider having a garage sale or home auction: Having enough items that are likely to net a profit (furniture, antiques, electronics) may make the effort of having a garage sale worthwhile. Alternatively, if your possessions are potentially of substantial value, consider holding a home auction. You can often hire a service agency to catalog and appraise your possessions and coordinate a home auction for a percentage of the profit.
•Donate to charity: For those items you cannot give away as gifts or sell for profit, make a tax deductible donation to charity. Often traditional charity organizations will pick-up donated items. Consider thinking of specific organizations for specific items, for example, donating your professional wardrobe to an abused women's shelter or employment assistance program; donating books to the local library sale; offering furniture to the Red Cross for fire victims; or giving old instruments to a school music program.
•Have the kids remove their "stuff": Don't hesitate to tell the adult children it is time to collect their childhood belongings and store their own mementos. Give them a deadline that works with your schedule and warn them that anything leftover will be donated to charity. You may be surprised at how much they decide not to store themselves!

Dividing Things Peacefully
•Agree on a system: In order to avoid disagreements among adult children and other family members, create a clear system for identifying who gets what. One idea is to assign each family member a colored sticker and identify items accordingly. An alternative is to have family members take turns choosing items they would like to have. In both cases it is good to clearly outline what items are available for the taking.
•Be sure everyone gets something special: Even though disagreements may still occur, agreeable solutions may be achieved more readily if everyone feels they received something meaningful to them.
•Encourage negotiation: If disagreements happen despite your efforts, encourage family members to negotiate amongst themselves. Someone may be willing to trade an item with financial worth for something with more sentimental value. If these exchanges occur, be sure not to take offense.

Leaving a family home can be a bittersweet event that involves revisiting many painful and joyful memories. During the process of downsizing we may be surprised at how attached we have become to our possessions and how difficult it might seem to part with them. It is important to remember, however, that it is the relationships in our lives that give us the most pleasure. A life filled with possessions is no competition to a life filled with family, friends, and meaningful connections.

Inventions and Their Inventors

Lincoln Logs were invented in 1916 by John Lloyd Wright (1892-1972), an architect and one of the five children of the world-famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. John patented his toy in 1920, and sold the logs through his toy company, the Red Square Toy Company. Playskool bought the rights to Lincoln Logs in 1943.

Legos (TM) are a very popular interlocking plastic toy. The LEGO toy company was founded by Ole Kirk Christiansen of Denmark in 1932, but the company then sold mostly wooden toys. The word LEGO was formed from two Danish words, "LEg GOdt," which mean "play well." Christiansen was a carpenter from the Danish village of Billund. The interlocking plastic blocks (the stud and tube coupling system) were invented by Godtfred Christiansen (Ole's son), and patented in 1958. Lego toys were first sold in the USA in 1961. LEGO people were introduced in 1974.

The windshield wiper was invented by Mary Anderson in 1903 to help streetcars operate safely in the rain. In 1905 she patented her invention, which allowed the car operator to control the external, swinging arm wipers from within the car. Windshield wipers became standard equipment on cars a decade later. Anderson was from Alabama, USA.

Velcro - George de Mestral was a Swiss engineer who invented Velcro in 1948. While hiking, he had noticed that burrs (burdock seeds) stuck to his clothing extraordinarily well. The burrs had hook-like protrusions that attached themselves firmly to clothing. Mestral used this same model to develop Velcro, which consists of one strip of nylon with loops, and another with hooks. Mestral patented Velcro in 1957. It was originally used mostly for fastening clothes, but is now used to fasten many other things.

Tea bags were invented by Thomas Sullivan around 1908. The first bags were made from silk. Sullivan was a tea and coffee merchant in New York who began packaging tea sample in tiny silk bags, but many customers brewed the tea in them (the tea-filled bag was placed directly into the boiling water where the tea brewed, instead of the traditional way of brewing loose tea in a teapot). Later tea bags were made of thin paper.

The parking meter was invented by Carl C. Magee of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA. The first parking meter was installed in Oklahoma City. Magee holds a patent (#2,118,318) for a "coin controlled parking meter," filed on May 13, 1935 and issued on May 24, 1938.

The yo-yo is one of the oldest toys. Yo-yo's have been used as a toy for over 2,500 years, when the ancient Romans played with wooden and metal yo-yo's. The word "yo-yo" may come from Tagalog language (the language of the Philippines), meaning "to come back."

Richard G. Drew (1899-1980) invented masking tape and clear adhesive tape (also called cellophane tape or Scotch tape). Drew was an engineer for the 3M company (the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing). Drew's first tape invention was a masking tape made for painters in 1923 (this tape was designed to help painters paint a straight border between two colors). This early masking tape was a wide paper tape with adhesive on only the edges of the tape - not in the middle. Drew made an improved tape called Scotch (TM) Brand Cellulose Tape in 1930. This tape was a clear, all-purpose adhesive tape that was soon adopted worldwide. The first tape dispenser with a built-in cutting edge was invented in 1932 by John A. Borden, another 3M employee.

The game of basketball was invented by James Naismith (1861-1939). Naismith was a Canadian physical education instructor who invented the game in 1891 so that his students could participate in sports during the winter. In his original game, which he developed while at the Springfield, Massachusetts YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association), Naismith used a soccer ball which was thrown into peach baskets (with the basket bottoms intact). The first public basketball game was in Springfield, MA, USA, on March 11, 1892. Basketball was first played at the Olympics in Berlin Germany in 1936 (America won the gold medal, and Naismith was there).

Liquid Paper is a quick-drying, paper-colored (white) liquid that is painted onto paper to correct printed material. Liquid Paper was invented in 1951 by Bessie Nesmith (1922-1980). It was based on white tempera paint (Nesmith was also an artist). Nesmith was a secretary in Texas, USA, before the time of word processors. She began selling her vastly popular invention, and soon ran the very successful Liquid Paper company. Her son, Michael Nesmith, was a member of the rock group called the Monkees.

Smells That Boost Your Health

Certain scents can help memory, mood, energy.

Did you know that the human sense of smell can identify thousands of aromas and is 10,000 times more precise than our sense of taste?
We have millions of smell receptors in our noses. When they detect a scent, they shoot the information to the olfactory bulb—a pea-size cluster in the brain, which sorts the signals and relays them to the limbic system. This primitive part of the brain governs many memories and emotions; some of our most basic behaviors—feeding, fighting, or fleeing; as well as pleasure, and maybe even addiction. Because of their close proximity, the neurological controls for these behaviors often become entangled.
It also explains how odor can help lower stress levels, improve mental and physical performance, ease pain.

Sleep More Deeply
Sniff: Lavender
     There's a reason people have been filling pillows with lavender flowers for centuries: Earlier research demonstrated that lavender increases deep slow-wave sleep, and recent studies from England and Korea show that the flower also helps people with mild insomnia.
     Try this: Spritz your bedpost with lavender essence just before bed.

To Resist a Snack Attack
Sniff: Green Apple or Another Favorite Scent
     A fragrance you love can help manage cravings, according Alan Hirsch, MD, founder of the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago. In one study, Hirsch gave overweight people banana, green apple, and peppermint to sniff when they felt a craving; they lost more weight than nonsniffers.
     Try this: Keep a bottle of a favorite scent handy throughout the day and try sniffing instead of snacking.

To Calm Down
Sniff: Orange or Lavender
     In an Austrian study, researchers wafted the smell of oranges before some participants and lavender before others. The two groups felt less anxious, more positive, and calmer, compared with participants who were exposed to no fragrance at all.
     Try this: Add a few drops of either oil to a room diffuser and use in your office on stressful days.

To Learn Something New
Sniff: Rosemary
     Next time a presentation or new software program drives you crazy, think of Shakespeare’s poor Ophelia. After Hamlet made her nuts, she toddled around the castle picking rosemary, muttering, "That's for remembrance." Researchers at the University of Northumbria in the United Kingdom found she was on to something. After exposure to rosemary oil, 48 college students outperformed a control group on memory tests and felt more alert throughout.
     Try this: Buy a plant or two for your windowsill, so you can pluck a branch to smell while you're studying or memorizing something for work.

To Fight Pain
Sniff: Lavender or Peppermint
     Looking for ways to use less pain medication, doctors at New York University Medical Center exposed patients undergoing laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery to lavender oil (applied to the anesthesiology face masks they wore during surgery). Those patients required substantially less morphine and needed fewer analgesics afterward. Peppermint helps too. After a review of several studies, a Wheeling Jesuit University researcher concluded that it can ease headache pain, and German headache researchers report that the brisk smell is as effective as acetaminophen.
     Try this: Next time you have a headache, inhale the scent from a handkerchief sprinkled with a few drops of lavender or peppermint.

To Crank Up Your Workout
Sniff: Peppermint
     In a study at Wheeling Jesuit University, peppermint vapors gave college basketball players more motivation, energy, speed, and confidence. Some athletes use peppermint inhalers, and at one time Reebok even built a peppermint smell into some sports bras.
     Try this: When you're flagging during your power walk, take an invigorating breath from the Peak Performance Sports Inhaler with peppermint vapors.

For tea flavoring, dissolve old-fashioned lemon drops or hard mint candies in your tea. They melt quickly and keep the tea brisk!

Make your own spiced tea or cider. Place orange peels, whole cloves, and cinnamon sticks in a 6 inch square piece of cheesecloth. Gather the corners and tie with a string. Steep in hot cider or tea for 10 minutes - or longer if you want a stronger flavor.

Always chill juices or sodas before adding to beverage recipes.

Place fresh or dried mint in the bottom of a cup of hot chocolate for a cool and refreshing taste.

Never boil coffee; it brings out the acid and causes a bitter taste. Store ground coffee in the refrigerator or freezer to keep it fresh.

Always use COLD water for electric drip coffee makers. Use 1 to 2 tablespoons ground coffee for each cup of water.

One lemon yields about 1/4 cup juice; one orange yields about 1/3 cup juice. This is helpful in making fresh orange juice or lemonade.

Calorie-free club soda adds sparkle to iced fruit juices, makes them go further and reduces calories per portion.

You won't need sugar with your tea if you drink jasmine tea or any of the lighter-bodies varieties, like Formosa Oolong, which have their own natural sweetness. They are fine for sugarless iced tea, too.

To cool your punch, float an ice ring made from the punch rather than using ice cubes. Not only is this more decorative, but it also inhibits melting and diluting.

Why kids adore animals and what they can learn from all creatures, great and small.
     Children are fascinated by animals. Whether it's a bunny in a picture book, a nature show crocodile, a horse on the farm, or a monkey in the zoo, our kids can't get enough of the furry - and even the scaly and slithery - creatures that share our planet. And when it comes to the creatures that share our homes, the fascination is even more intense. The bond that develops between a child and his pet is deep and can be every bit as authentic as the emotional ties to a parent, grandparent, sibling, or friend.

     What's behind this fascination? One theory, biophelia, argues that our attraction to animals is hard-wired in our brains. In fact, evidence suggests that for as long as we humans have been walking the earth, we have had pets by our side. Whatever the reason, research shows that kids reap rich rewards from interacting with animals. A pet can provide affection, counteract loneliness, and help relieve stress. Feeding the classroom turtle or guinea pig can teach responsibility and care. Visiting a drive-through safari or simply watching the squirrels in the park gives children a chance to learn about habitats and survival. In short, animals provide one of the best learning tools in your child's life.

Lessons from a Fish
     At its simplest, having an animal at home invites more of the natural world into your child's everyday experiences. It's like a daily biology lesson. A pet provides an up-close opportunity to study how a non-human creature moves, sees, smells, thinks, and even feels. In addition, a pet can help your child understand other kinds of animals, even those he may never have seen in person. One study showed that 5 year olds who cared for a goldfish at home better understood how frogs eat and grow than their classmates without direct pet experiences.

     That goldfish can also help your child learn empathy. Young children do not automatically come equipped with the ability to see and feel from another's perspective, especially when that other is very different from them. (Think of the preschooler who picks out a toy car or a doll as just the right gift for Daddy's birthday.) Animals, with their ways of moving, eating, and communicating that are so different from humans, challenge young children's "me" perspective. A dog's tucked-in tail says "I'm scared," for instance. A cat's arched back and standup fur says, "I'm seriously annoyed."
     These unique moments give children a chance to step into other paws and claws and see the world through animal eyes. One bonus of learning empathy this way is a greater awareness of animal welfare. Kids who understand animal behavior and needs are more likely to embrace humane attitudes. In addition, empathy for the animal world may spill over (with your help) into greater sensitivity to human needs.
     Pets give many children a sense of companionship, support, and love. Misty the gerbil isn't the only animal to earn a Best Friend Award. Pets are available and rarely too busy to give their undivided attention - especially if a treat is in the offing. If a child is upset, for example, Misty doesn't have to be dragged away from preparing dinner or pulled off the phone. She doesn't say, "Use your words." Instead, she's all ears. No wonder many children see their pets as self-esteem boosters.

     Animals provide opportunities to nurture. Although we rightly think of kids on the receiving end of care, we hope that when they grow up they'll, in turn, be sensitive nurturers of children, elderly, and others. The roots of nurturing skills are laid down during childhood, as children observe, learn about, and try out being caregivers. Pets, whether at home or in school, are dependent on us to survive, and can help children plant those roots. When your child sets out food, grooms the guinea pig, walks the dog, or goes along with you to the vet, his nurturing roots are growing.
     Caring for an animal provides an especially important opportunity for boys to nurture, since they get fewer chances to hone their care-giving skills as they grow up. Research has found that children associate caregiving of humans with the female role - a "mommy thing." Pet care is a solid "gender-neutral" training ground for nurturance.

Animal Opportunities
     If you're considering a pet, be aware that there's no one right animal (or species) for toddlers, preschoolers, or teens. Instead, the choice involves savvy matchmaking. Into the mix go an animal's needs and temperament, your child's personality, and your family's situation. Will that high-energy dog get the exercise she needs living in a small apartment? Will the cat hair set off Grandma's allergies? Will those veterinary bills stretch the budget too far?

If you can't make room for an animal in your home, don't worry: There's no evidence that pets are necessary for children to thrive. We do know, however, that children's lives are enriched by involvement with the natural world. Try to find other ways to go "on safari." A backyard birdfeeder, for example, offers a ringside seat at an "avian drama." Walks in the woods or a visit to a petting zoo, an aquarium, or the seashore are all wonderful ways to bring your child and animal life together.

As we prepare a home to go up for sale, there are certain things we can do that make BIG differences in obtaining a buyer:

~ Pricing - Find out what the home is worth. In today's market, buyers are looking for good value for their money. You will benefit from pricing the home reasonably.

~ Light - Showing a well lit home makes it look large and spacious. Clean drapes or take them down, clean windows and lampshades, increase the wattage in the light bulbs and trim trees and shrubs outside to allow more light in.

~ Closets - By emptying your closets to half full, you show there is ample space. Storage is a major concern for buyers. To see a closet half empty and organized gives the impression of more storage room.

~ Remove Personal Belongings - Give the buyer the benefit of imagining their own items in the home by taking your items out. Take down family pictures, plaques with sayings and knick knacks.

~ Pets - Not all buyers are pet lovers. Discreetly hide the food and water bowls, litter boxes and clean pet fur off of everything. Get rid of pet smells or pet stains on carpeting or flooring. If you have an Open House planned, take your pets out of the house for the day.

~ Kitchen - This is the most important room and one that can make or break a potential sale. Neutral colored walls help give a blank canvas to the buyer, to put their own colors in the room. Take away counter clutter. Buy one high end appliance to give the effect that everything is high end.

~ Updating - A complete makeover on your home is not necessary. Little subtle changes go a long way. Fix leaky faucets, change or clean drapes, clean grout, paint, replace cabinet hardware.

~ Show Ready - Have your home always ready to show. Keep it tidy, clean and uncluttered.

~ First Impression: Outside - As one is looking at your home the moment they pull in front of it, this is the first impression that cannot be repeated. Many times, the buyer has already made an opinion of the home before opening the front door. Spruce up the shrubs, put out colorful flowers, sweep walkways, clean the exterior of the home and clean the driveway.

It's about choices we make. It's about our habits. Many of us want to make changes in our habits. Sometimes it’s a New Year’s resolution; sometimes it’s advice from the doctor. Sometimes it’s just a desire to be stronger or have more energy. We want to eat better and be more active, but we don’t always know how to make the necessary changes. Taking some time to consider these helpful points may help you understand how to get from where you are now – to where you want to be.

1. Caring enough to treat your body really well. Caring about yourself is essential for making any behavior change. Self-care is not selfish – it is what we have to do in order to stop doing one thing and start doing another. Taking good care of yourself also helps you be in better shape to take care of those around you.

2. Choose to take small steps in a new direction. Change is all about making choices. It is making the choice to do one thing rather than another . It doesn’t mean that you have to give up every thing . It just means that sometimes you make the choice to be more conscious of what is the best option.

3. Creativity to find a variety of food and fitness options. The world is filled with stressful situations that can get in the way of our plans to eat well or to be active. The key is to stay calm and to brainstorm a variety of possible solutions. If you are out of fresh produce, you can still enjoy some canned fruit or frozen vegetables.

4. Courage for new adventures and everyday challenges. There is no way around it. It takes courage to make a change. There are many ways to find the courage you need. You can discuss your struggles with friends or family; read inspiring stories about people who have made difficult changes; or find strength in faith and prayer.

5. Comfort through tough times with relaxation (or even pampering). Change is hard work and can be stressful even when it is a positive change. When you are trying to do things differently, you need to rest and recharge your internal batteries. Take time to read a book, to take a nap, to play with the kids or just to do nothing for a while.

6. Confidence to take risks and to make normal mistakes. Optimistic people are generally healthier than pessimistic people. Being confident that you can make positive changes is at least half the battle. Sometimes it helps to make a list of all the changes you have already made,like eating more whole grains or drinking less soda.

7. Celebration of the progress toward a strong and healthy you. Rewards and celebrations are an important part of successful change (think about why we celebrate graduations or job promotions). Give yourself plenty of pats on the back just for moving a step closer to your goal. Gold stars on the calendar aren’t just for kids anymore!

Are cold symptoms making you feel miserable? Here are 12 cold remedies you can use right now -- at home -- to feel better.

Cold Remedy #1: Drink plenty of fluids to help break up your congestion. Drinking water or juice will prevent dehydration and keep your throat moist. You should drink at least 8 to 10 eight-ounce glasses of water daily. Include fluids such as water, sports drinks, herbal teas, fruit drinks, or ginger ale. Your mother's chicken soup might help too! (Avoid cola, coffee, and other drinks with caffeine because it acts like a diuretic and may dehydrate you.)

Cold Remedy #2: Inhale steam to ease your congestion and drippy nose. Hold your head over a pot of boiling water and breathe through your nose. Be careful. If the steam burns your nose, breathe in more slowly. You can buy a humidifier, but the steam will be the same as the water on the stove. Moisture from a hot shower with the door closed, saline nasal spray, or a room humidifier is just as helpful to ease congestion.

Cold Remedy #3: Blow your nose often, but do it the proper way. It's important to blow your nose regularly when you have a cold rather than sniffling mucus back into your head. But when you blow hard, pressure can carry germ-carrying phlegm back into your ear passages, causing earache. The best way to blow your nose is to press a finger over one nostril while you blow gently to clear the other.

Cold Remedy #4: Use saline nasal sprays or make your own salt water rinse to irrigate your nose. Salt-water rinsing helps break nasal congestion while also removing virus particles and bacteria from your nose. Here's a popular recipe:
Mix 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon baking soda in 8 ounces of warm water. Fill a bulb syringe with this mixture (or use a Neti pot, available at most health foods stores). Lean your head over a basin, and using the bulb syringe, gently squirt the salt water into your nose. Hold one nostril closed by applying light finger pressure while squirting the salt mixture into the other nostril. Let it drain. Repeat two to three times, and then treat the other nostril.

Cold Remedy #5: Stay warm and rested. Staying warm and resting when you first come down with a cold or the flu helps your body direct its energy toward the immune battle. This battle taxes the body. So give it a little help by lying down under a blanket to stay warm if necessary.

Cold Remedy #6: Gargle with warm salt water. Gargling can moisten a sore or scratchy throat and bring temporary relief. Try a half teaspoon of salt dissolved in 8 ounces of warm water four times daily. To reduce the tickle in your throat, try an astringent gargle -- such as tea that contains tannin -- to tighten the membranes. Or use a thick, viscous gargle made with honey, popular in folk medicine. Steep one tablespoon of raspberry leaves or lemon juice in two cups of hot water; mix with one teaspoon of honey. Let the mixture cool to room temperature before gargling.

Cold Remedy #7: Drink hot liquids. Hot liquids relieve nasal congestion, prevent dehydration, and soothe the uncomfortably inflamed membranes that line your nose and throat. If you're so congested you can't sleep at night, try a hot toddy, an age-old remedy. Make a cup of hot herbal tea. Add one teaspoon of honey and one small shot (about 1 ounce) of whiskey or bourbon if you wish. Limit yourself to one. Too much alcohol inflames those membranes and is counterproductive.

Cold Remedy #8: Take a steamy shower. Steamy showers moisturize your nasal passages and relax you. If you're dizzy from the flu, run a steamy shower while you sit on a chair nearby and take a sponge bath.

Cold Remedy #9: Try a small dab of mentholated salve under your nose to help open breathing passages and help restore the irritated skin at the base of the nose. Menthol, eucalyptus, and camphor all have mild numbing ingredients that may help relieve the pain of a nose rubbed raw.

Cold Remedy #10: Apply hot packs around your congested sinuses. You can buy reusable hot packs at a drugstore. Or make your own. Take a damp washcloth and heat it for 30 seconds in a microwave. (Test the temperature first to make sure it's right for you.)

Cold Remedy #11: Sleep with an extra pillow under your head. This will help relieve congested nasal passages. If the angle is too awkward, try placing the pillows between the mattress and the box springs to create a more gradual slope.

Cold Remedy #12: Learn about natural remedies like zinc, echinacea, and vitamin C. People looking for natural cold remedies often turn to supplements.

Zinc: While early studies showed that zinc could help fight off a cold more quickly, the latest consensus seems to be that zinc has a minimal benefit at best.
Echinacea: While echinacea was once a very popular cold remedy, the latest science indicates that it does not appear to prevent colds and is not an effective treatment. Researchers are continuing to study echinacea’s effects on respiratory infections to determine if there is some benefit.
Vitamin C: What about vitamin C? A recent survey of 65 years' worth of studies found limited benefit. The researchers found no evidence that vitamin C prevents colds. However, they did find evidence that vitamin C may shorten how long you suffer from a cold. One large study found that people who took a vitamin C mega dose -- 8 grams on the first day of a cold -- shortened the duration of their colds.

"Chit-chat" about Thank You notes:

According to etiquette, whenever you receive a gift, you should send a written thank you note...at any age. It's not about you, but about letting the gift giver feel valued and appreciated. After all, they didn't HAVE to give you a gift. Our society is drifting away from such niceties, substituting phone calls and emails - or just not sending any thank you at all. There is nothing, however, that says you truly appreciate the thought and kindness behind the gift you've received than a heartfelt, handwritten thank you note.

Here's when you send a note:

In your personal life: when someone has given you a gift, done you a favor or shown you special kindness. It also acknowledges you received the gift.

In business: when you have been interviewed (even if you don't know whether you got the job) or been given a gift. Further, if someone has made a referral to your business, given you the name of a valuable contact or talked highly of you to a superior or prospective employer it is always an elegant touch to write a short note.

Exceptions: If the person gave you the gift in person and you thanked them personally. However, it is important to know that the over-60 generation still generally expects a written thank you.

Much is made of the timing of a thank-you note, but really, it is quite simple: The sooner the better. But if you've procrastinated, it is never too late. A late note is worlds better than no note. According to Leslie Harpold, "Thank-you-note writing is one of the loveliest traditions to have been utterly compromised by the information age." In this age of e-cards, texts and voicemail, a thank-you note is a grace note that will build your reputation as a thoughtful, elegant person.

Experts say not to underestimate the power of a "thank you." Kim Izzo, etiquette columnist, says, "It's making the effort. People really appreciate getting mail that's not a bill, for one thing, and just taking that extra bit of time to write a thank you note really means everything."

Harriette Cole, syndicated columnist: It also depends on whom you're sending it to. If you have a person who lives on the Internet, you can get a thank you card that that is animated and dances and does all kinds of fabulous things. If that person would love to get an e-mail thank you, that's the person you send it to. Your momma doesn't want that. She wants appreciation and handwritten notes!

E. Jean Carroll, Elle magazine advice columnist: We send thank you notes because we want to be loved and admired. And if you want to be loved and admired, you send it on stationery so thick it's like ice cream and you write it by hand—it's just elegant and it's fun to get it!
