NORTH football fans have the chance to snap up a slice of the region’s soccer heritage.

Rare match-day programmes are for sale in what is described as the best auction of its kind of the year.

Hundreds of souvenir team-sheets featuring Newcastle United, Gateshead FC, Sunderland, Hartlepool, Darlington and Middlesbrough will go under the hammer.

The collection has been handed to auctioneers by an elderly gentleman who could no longer find space for the items after a house move. Unique Gateshead FC home programmes spanning the 1944/45 post-war season to 1959/60 are expected to spark a bidding war.

And sheets from St James’ Park games against the footballing giants of the day – from the 1940s to the 1960s – are also causing a flurry of interest.

The items hail from an era when Newcastle United’s ground packed in tens of thousands to watch the black and whites take on the might of Sheffield United, Manchester United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leeds.

There are even some rare programmes from European nights when the Magpies took on Barcelona and Celtic.

And Newcastle legend Jackie Milburn, who is second only to Alan Shearer on the club’s all-time top goalscorer list, features in many of the team-sheets.

Milburn, affectionately known as “Wor Jackie”, played 353 league matches for the side from 1943 to 1957, hitting the net 200 times.

John Wilson, of Methuselah Football Auctions, has branded the collection one of the best he has seen. He expects private football collectors and even public museums to take an interest in the lots.

“We’re hopeful the collection will go into good hands because it’s such a nice one’” he said.

“I can see there being a lot of interest because football is such an important part of life in the region.”

The auction will take place on June 14 at 1pm at the Marton Hotel and Country Club in Marton, Middlesbrough.

Viewing is from 9.30am to 12.30pm on the day or visit www.methuselahltd.com. For information, contact 07718 120274 or email john@methuselahltd.com.

The Venezuelan stopper’s representative Claudio Barrios has revealed that his client could very well make his move away from the Eredivisie outfit this summer.

Reports in Dutch media indicate that FC Twente Enschede right-back, Roberto Rosales, would be leaving his current club in the upcoming summer transfer window to join FC Porto or Newcastle United.

The 23-year-old, who arrived at De Grolsch Veste in the summer of 2010 after making 82 appearances for Gent, has been putting in consistent performances for the Eredivisie outfit since his arrival.

His impressive and rock solid showings have garnered him interest from a host of European clubs including the Portuguese giants and the Toon.

Claudio Barrios, the right-back’s agent, has now confirmed the reports linking his client to numerous European clubs while adding that some clubs from German Bundesliga and Spanish La Liga are also closely monitoring the full-back.

“Newcastle and FC Porto are two clubs that are closely following Roberto. There is also interest from two German and two Spanish clubs. But the transfer market will be open for a long time and I remind everyone that most deals will be completed in August”, Barrios was quoted as saying to the media.

Rosales, who has thus far donned the jersey of Venezuela in 33 matches, has thus far made 84 appearances for the Enschede giants. The talented defender has an ongoing contract at De Grolsch Veste that runs until the summer of 2013.

Reports indicate that the club management is looking to offer the Venezuelan stopper an extension to his current contract in the coming weeks. However, the Tukkers could very well be tempted to cash in on their right-back if a good offer comes in this summer.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are also said to be interested in signing the Enschede giants centre-back, Douglas Franco Teixeira, before the start of the 2012/13 campaign.

The Brazilian-born Dutch stopper is regarded as one of the best central defenders playing in the highest echelons of Dutch football, and reports suggest that FC Twente will not let go of their prized asset for anything less than 10 million Euros.

THE AGENT of FC Twente right-back Roberto Rosales last night insisted Newcastle United are on the trail of the highly-rated Venezuela international.

Toon boss Alan Pardew has previously been linked with the 23-year-old, rated in the £3m bracket, after he took in several games in the Dutch Eredivisie towards the end of last season.

A right-sided full-back is a priority for Pardew as Danny Simpson’s refusal to sign the deal offered to him means that, at the moment, he will be leaving St James’ Park with Fulham seemingly his likely destination.

Claudio Barrios, Rosales’ representative, told the Dutch media that his man was definitely on Newcastle’s radar, but the Magpies would face competition if they wanted to land him this summer.

Barrios said: “Newcastle and FC Porto are two clubs that are closely following Roberto. There is also interest from two German and two Spanish clubs.

“But the transfer market will be open for a long time and I remind everyone that most deals will be completed in August.”

If Pardew decided to follow up on this apparent initial interest in Rosales, he would be in no great hurry for a deal to be done as he would be happy to wait until during or indeed after the European Championships for more new faces to follow Romain Amalfitano, who agreed a three-year deal on Wednesday, to Tyneside.

Rosales, who can also play on the right side of midfield but is a natural defender, came to Europe from hometown club Caracas in 2007 to join Belgian side Gent, despite having made only two first-team appearances.

He signed for Twente, now managed by former England and Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren, two years ago and has been an almost ever-present in the side. Rosales has been capped 36 times at senior level and last season was even linked with Spanish giants Real Madrid.

One of Pardew’s tasks this summer is to trim the number of fringe players from his squad and Spanish striker Xisco, currently on loan at Deportivo La Coruna, could well be off-loaded with 12 months of his contract still to run, which would raise some funds.

Albeit Newcastle will take a heavy loss on the player. Deportivo have

stated they would consider making his move permanent if they won promotion to La Liga, which is now looking all-but secured thanks to the Newcastle player.

Xisco scored a last-minute winner on Wednesday night to help his club beat Gimnastic Taragona 2-1 having come on as a late substitute.

Deportivo now need only a point from their final two matches for go back up after one season outside of Spain’s top tier.

Xisco, who moved from England to Spain on a year’s loan in August, burst into tears at the end of the match in which he emerged the hero.

He said: “This is my best moment in football.”

Xisco, 25, moved from Deportivo to Newcastle in 2008 for £5.7m.

Eden Hazard is at the top of a new wave of France-based players who are
becoming hugely attractive to Europe’s leading clubs. Ligue 1 will be the
transfer battleground once the window opens.

No deal will eclipse the clamour for Hazard, the 21 year-old who is wanted by
both Manchester clubs and Chelsea
– although he may have overplayed his hand with indications on Thursday that
all three clubs are ready to walk away.

His agent, John Bico, has helped manufacture the situation partly because
Hazard is extremely talented and partly because the Lille playmaker is his
one major client.

However, the Belgium international has gone along with his representative’s
tactics of flirting with every potential suitor.

First it was Tottenham
Hotspur, then Manchester United, then Manchester City, Chelsea and,
on Thursday, there was even talk of an old flame being rekindled with
Arsenal.

Hazard, as he has done more often than not in recent weeks, took time out from
preparing for a match to again publicly reiterate the clubs who are after
him.

It is an eye-watering proposition. Hazard wants £4.6 million a year net of tax
(so £9 million a year in salary for any club who sign him) with an
astonishing £6 million in agent’s fees going to Bico.

That is more than double, according to one Premier League chairman, the
previously highest fee paid to an agent.

It had appeared that City, who have made most of the running but have grown
frustrated at the exorbitant demands, would sign Hazard but Bico belatedly
interested Chelsea – with calls last Friday – and now it is becoming a case
of who pays the most. And that is without any club having agreed a fee with
Lille, who want around £28 million.

They will not be the only French club profiting hugely this summer from
England. Newcastle have shown the way with a string of successful signings –
most notably Hatem Ben Arfa and Yohan Cabaye – and there are others to
follow and ones who will come at a far higher price.

A month ago Arsenal were said to be “99 per cent” certain of signing the
Rennes midfielder Yann M’Vila for around £16 million but might turn to
Toulouse’s Étienne Capoue.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been to watch another Lille player,
defender Mathieu Debuchy – set to be France’s first-choice right back at
euro 2012 – who is also wanted by Newcastle, while Tottenham’s Harry
Redknapp was in Paris last week to meet striker Loïc Rémy to finally try to
prise him away from Marseilles.

Then there are the surprise French champions Montpellier, whose defender Mapou
Yanga-Mbiwa has already declared that he would like to come to England,
while midfielder Younès Belhanda is also being considered by clubs who may
miss out on Hazard. Above all there is powerful striker Olivier Giroud, the
top scorer in the French league who is wanted by clubs across Spain and
England and appears set to also arrive on these shores.

Unsurprisingly, six of the players mentioned made the Ligue 1 team of the year
and it is also the strength of the French league – long gone are the days of
Lyon’s domination – that has helped not only make it more competitive but
attractive to clubs who want to cherry-pick the talent.

Boys staying in Brazil

In Brazil, it is called the ‘Kleberson Effect’ and it may partly explain why
shining young talents such as Neymar, Lucas Moura and Ganso are more
reluctant to leave their homeland and move to Europe.

An influx of new money into Brazil, with new television deals in particular,
has vastly improved the finances of clubs in the country while there is
pressure for a number of players to delay leaving until after the 2014 World
Cup finals.

But there is also much debate in Brazil about the plight of Kleberson, who was
an unlikely inclusion, from Atletico Paranaense, in Luiz Felipe Scolari’s
team who won the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan.

Scolari declared Kleberson the “driving force” behind the triumph and the
midfielder, then 23, earned a big-money move to Manchester United. It did
not work out.

He made just 20 unhappy appearances in two years before moving to Turkey, then
back to Brazil, and now, aged 32, he has gone full circle and is with
Paranaense again having failed to fulfil the potential and still feeling
bruised by his experience at United.

The truth behind Mourinho

It has been claimed that one reason why Jose Mourinho apparently ‘snubbed’
Chelsea’s attempts to bring him back to the club – or was it the Special
One’s own desire to be wanted that sparked the hullabaloo and eventually a
new contract at Real Madrid? – was because he was indignant that his agent,
Jorge Mendes, was contacted by Roman Abramovich’s personal assistant rather
than by the Russian billionaire himself. Nonsense.

Anyone who has high-level dealings with Chelsea knows that to speak to the
owner, they have to go through Marina Granovskaia, and that includes the
club’s manager.

She may be Abramovich’s ‘PA’ in title but Granovskaia is a key figure at
Chelsea, some would say, the key figure. Indeed, she was one of the few from
Abramovich’s inner circle who maintained a good relationship with Mourinho
after he was sacked in 2007, corresponding with him via email, and is
credited with persuading the Russian billionaire to even consider rebuilding
links between the pair.

To suggest that her involvement – if there was any involvement – in trying to
bring Mourinho back was a reason behind that not happening is little more
than a convenient excuse.

Suit you sir

How times have changed Harvey Nichols now has a box at Manchester City’s
Etihad Stadium to sell clothes, handbags and shoes from designers such as
Jimmy Choo and Dolce & Gabbana from the luxury department store.

The 8ft by 11ft box also has a personal shopper in attendance to advise fans
on the latest trends and beauty therapists offering makeovers and massages.

There is even a sommelier from the store to give advice on wines and spirits.
Guests also get to take home a gift bag with wine, soap and macaroons in the
City team colours.

ONLY one serious offer was on the table when Mike Ashley tried to sell Newcastle United, the banker at the centre of the sale revealed today.

Investment bankers were called in to sell the St James’ Park club in 2008 after owner Ashley bowed to fans’ pressure by putting the club on the market.

In an open letter to supporters at the time, he said he had put the club up for sale after being advised not to take his children to the ground over fears they would be attacked as morale among fans hit rock bottom.

But takeover deals repeatedly collapsed, leaving Ashley desperately looking for a new investor.

Now in an exclusive interview as the Chronicle marks the sports tycoon’s five-year reign at Newcastle, Keith Harris has:

Revealed 20 potential buyers expressed an interest in the club – but only one emerged as a realistic investor

Said it was a Tyneside millionaire who came close to clinching the deal before details of the buy-out were leaked and the move crashed

Claimed Ashley grew tired of “tyre kickers” who were more interested in raising their profiles than buying the club, and

Said Ashley was “disillusioned” with his time on Tyneside after months of torment and protests from the Newcastle crowd.

Mr Harris spent more than six months seeking out potential suitors who were willing to meet the club’s £80m asking price.

But the experienced banker said only one credible investor appeared to have the finances needed to take control of Newcastle United.

He refused to name the businessman, but the Chronicle understands it to be Tyneside tycoon Barry Moat who made his fortune selling products from his North East company, Premier Direct.

Moat became the front runner in a £100m race to complete ownership of the club and reports claimed he planned to install Alan Shearer as permanent manager.

The property tycoon was chairman of Shearer’s testimonial committee in 2005 and also has a plush executive box at St James’ Park.

Mr Harris, chairman of investment banking firm Seymour Pierce, said: “We were retained by Mike Ashley to sell the business. We got expressions of interest from a lot of people as is typical in football.

“Most of them were just kicking the tyres. There were one or two that came further than that but didn’t have all the money to invest but had some of it.

“It meant they required additional funding but Mike lost patience with the whole process.

“I wouldn’t say he was desperate to get rid of the club. He was disillusioned with what he saw going on at Newcastle United and he was obviously not massively popular in front of the fans.

“There’s not much honour in football. When a team gets relegated it tends to be the owner who gets criticised, but when things go well it’s the manager who gets the plaudits and I don’t think Mike was used to that.”

Mr Harris was appointed to handle the sale amid claims by entertainment mogul Chris Nathaniel that he was fronting a Nigerian bid to buy the Toon.

Interest also emerged from a South African consortium, headed by Scots-based businessman Jonathan Cleland. He said his group had met Kevin Keegan and held talks with Seymour Pierce.

Mr Harris said: “There were probably about 20 people who came back positively to express an interest and that was filtered down very, very quickly.

“Football is a great opportunity for people to enhance their personal profile but Mike stayed cool through the whole process.

“As we narrowed it down there was one very interested party. He was very interested and a deal was on the cards. Because it was sensitive the press got hold of it and it nearly killed it. He had some additional money to raise and the terms he suggested were not far off. It was a credible and possible buy-out.”

Referring to dealing with Ashley during negotiations, Mr Harris said: “He was very straightforward to deal with. He wanted to know the news and he relied on Derek Llambias as an intermediary.”
