Chrysanthemum and Autumn Foliage Festival is held at the Hirosaki Castle Botanical Garden in Hirosaki Park filled with beautiful green pines and autumn foliage. The highlights of the festival were definitely the colorful chrysanthemums.

These flowers were the size of dinner plates!

Another unique exhibit was the chrysanthemum dolls. The dolls were posed to reenact historical events that happened at Hirosaki. The faces were so lifelike!
This is my first time to visit the Towada Fall Yabusame festival. This festival differs from the spring yabusame event mainly because men also compete. In addition to the usually mounted archery, there were western style hurdle jumping competitions. Each event presented exciting photography opportunites and more than a few challenges! If you want to know more about the origins of Yabusame visit here.
Even earlier than that I can remember being fascinated with the beautiful images I would see in books and magazine and I knew that I wanted to create those images. So when the time came to chose a field of study, Fine Arts just seems like the right fit. After college I spent several years as a graphic designer in an attempt to find a way to be creative and pay the bills at the same time. During this period, I realized how vital the perfect image is in order for an advertisement to successfully deliver it's message.

Through the years my passion for painting and drawing have waned, but photography always fascinates me. Maybe it's the instant gratification of seeing your perspective captured almost immediately on the digital display. For whatever reason, photography is the one art form that I consistently return to when I feel the need for self-expression. Luckily, I am married to a really talented photographer who is light-years beyond me. My husband has been patiently teaching me the "technical" side of photography that I have always avoided learning.

Now that I live in a small town in Japan, my employment opportunity are not so overwhelming, I have had the free time to explore photography in a way I never considered before. Photography has become an everyday thing. I find myself jotting down compositional ideas at all hours of the day.

I am in the middle of trying to break into miscrostock photography. So far, I have tried iStockPhoto, Shutterstock, and Dreamstime. iStockphoto and Shutterstock have both rejected my submissions, however Dreamstime did accept two of my seven photographs submitted. It appears that I have a LOT to learn about composition and technical requirements for microstock photography. But I am not discouraged - I will keep trying!

I have also tried to sell my photos on Etsy, but I don't think that my subject matter has really found its audience yet, so the jury is still out on the success of that venture.

So if you are trying to sell your photography, let me encourage you. Don't give up - even if you think you are the only person who "gets" your idea. I believe that eventually you will find that perfect buyer. Here is a link to a great success story that will keep you trying even when the rejections clutter your inbox.

Hachinohe Coast: a Pine tree shaped by the ocean breezes.

Now that I am getting "serious" about photography, my husband surprised me with a Manfroto tripod! How lucky am I? And what a difference a sturdy tripod makes in the quality of your pictures.

I often shoot landscape photographs at or around sunset. These conditions sometime require a longer exposure. This is when the quality of your tripod can play a vital role in the outcome of your photograph. For instance, I was noticing that most of my photographs appeared to have a lot of "noise" in them. I checked and confirmed that my noise reduction option was set on my camera and made sure to correctly expose my photograph. No matter what I did as a precaution, my photos had a fuzzy or noisy look.

Hachinohe Moonrise - shot without the Manfroto tripod

 Luckily, I discovered the problem - my tripod was shifting slightly. I could literally see my subject drift slightly in the viewfinder after I released the shutter. Could the my tripod be the culprit?

Hachinohe Coast - Shot with the Manfroto Tripod

The lighting conditions are different in these photos, but the rocks are very indicative of the sharpness I was able to capture using the two different tripods using an aperature of f20.

 I am very satisfied with the Manfroto - I believe that the stability of the tripod improved my ability to capture low light landscape shots dramatically. I can see a marked improvement in the clarify of my photos and am very happy with my Manfroto tripod!

During my first visit to Japan I was pleased to discover Japanese craft books. Even though the books are typically not in English, they are beautifully illustrated and full of inspiring photographs. I am addicted to these books! When I visit a book store, I find myself heading straight to the crafting section and immediately dive into the crafty-goodness. These books are so inspiring that I feel like I am ready to create my own wardrobe and try out for Project Runway (of course, I'll wow the judges!) just as soon as I purchase this book! And attempt to translate the text into English!

So you can understand why I was thrilled to read the post at Sew Daily announcing the release of an English translation of I Am Cute Dresses, a book of 25 dress patterns by Sato Watanabe.

 This book is full of beautiful, yet simple to make dress patterns.
Usually Japanese pattern book include all the pattern pieces in the back of the book. This book is different because you actually draft your own pattern so that each garment is custom fitted to your measurements. Each dress pattern is designed to be easy to sew with minimum tailoring required.

If you want like the simple aesthetic of Japanese sewing but are intimidated by the idea of drafting your own patterns, you might prefer Simple Modern Sewing: 8 Basic Patterns to Create 25 Favorite Garments by Shufu-to-Seikatsusha. This book is available for pre-order and should be released on 11/07/2011.

Simple Modern Sewing Cover

This book uses 8 different pattern pieces that are mixed and matched to create 25 different garments. All of the pieces are including in the back of the book. This book, like I am Cute Dresses, is in English. Since I live in Japan it is pretty much impossible to find an English version of any craft books. I am still working my way through my first book of patterns and I have to admit that I was intimidated by a huge piece of paper that looked something like this...

Pattern Image for PurlBee.com

While searching online for advice, I found this wonderful tutorial at The Purl Bee. Things to keep in mind: You will need to trace your pattern into another piece of paper. Also, these pattern usually do not include a seem allowance, so you will need to add this to your draft. Japanese pattern tend to run small so you may want to make a muslin copy before you cut out the pattern using your best fabric.

Have you had any experience with Japanese patterns?

Meiji Shrine (明治神宮, Meiji Jingū), located in Shibuya, Tokyo, is the Shinto shrine that is dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shōken. When Emperor Meiji died in 1912 and Empress Shōken in 1914, the Japanese people wished to pay their respects to the two influential Japanese figures. It was for this reason that Meiji Shrine was constructed and their souls enshrined on November 1, 1920.

The original building was destroyed during the Tokyo air raids of World War II. The present iteration of the shrine was funded through a public fund raising effort and completed in October, 1958.
Meiji Shrine was brought into the flow of current events with the 2009 visit of United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. After arriving in Tokyo on her first foreign trip representing the newly elected President Barack Obama, she made her way to this shrine in advance of meetings with Japan's leaders to show her "respect toward history and the culture of Japan." (Source: Wikipedia)
It is a mind-set that sees beauty in imperfection and in the asymmetry of nature. Wabi-Sabi accepts and celebrates the cycles of life from birth to death. AWabi-Sabi mindset helps us embrace age and the passing of time as natural and not something to be feared or hidden. This idea ties into the concept of the tea ceremony marrying the bitterness of the matcha tea with the sweetness of the tea candy.

Wabi-Sabi is quiet beauty that waits to be observed. To develop a better feel for the concept, consider the meaning of the two words. Wabi is a form of the root word wa which describes harmony, peace, tranquility, and balance. Sabi describes the bloom of time. The bloom of time could be the patina of age that covers a beautiful antique object enhancing rather than destroying its individuality. Furthermore, consider the moment of clarity when you appreciate the shape of a flower petal or the bark of a tree that you have passed many times before without noticing.

Wabi-Sabi celebrates the minimal. There is an art to seeing the world in this manner. Glossy magazine ads with photoshop images of perfect often make one forget that the ideal is simply that - an ideal, not a reality. Having discovered this one key concept has helped me to better appreciate the Japanese aesthetic. When I observe interior spaces I see the concept in the rice paper walls, tatami mats, and the unfinished woods. In dress, I have noticed that many Japanese prefer muted colors such as greys or earth tones. Finally Japanese gardens are also an echo of Wabi-sabi in their carefully constrained asymmetry, you will never see the symmetry such as in a European style garden.

"Recognized as one of Japan’s Three Big Fire Festivals, the Aomori Nebuta Festival is renowned internationally and is designated as a significant intangible folk cultural asset of Japan."

Photo property of NewinNippon

"During the festival, more than twenty large nebutas – large lantern floats decorated with human figures – are wheeled along the parade route in the city of Aomori. Ahead of each float, Nebuta dancers called haneto dance wildly to the hayashi music of the Nebuta Festival,making the summer night festival lively and exciting. The fantastic view of lantern-lit floats and the dancers’ shouts of “rasse rasse” are overwhelming. It certainly is a genuine fire festival of Japan."

"The story goes that the Aomori Nebuta Festival originates in the purification rite of toro-nagashi (the placement of lantern offerings on the water), performed during the Tanabata Festival (the Star Festival of July 7) at many places in Japan. Some documents describe the first Nebuta as a giant lantern 360 cm on each sides that was created in the Muromachi era by the feudal lord Tsugaru Tamenobu to surprise people in Kyoto during the Lantern Festival, an event to welcome the spirits of departed ancestors."

An archer on a running horse shoots three special "turnip-headed" arrows successively at three wooden targets. A red parasol is displayed if the rider hits the target with the arrow. Photos property of NewinNippon.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 288px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-INLpu3MiF0E/TjjOs8ask_I/AAAAAAAAAKM/Ya__55CF0lw/s400/IMG_4156.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5636482205181842418" />
The history of Japanese horseback archery dates back to the 4th century, however, women mounted archers are a modern innovation.
Traditionally, women were barred from performing in yabusame, but in 1963 female archers participated in a yabusame demonstration for the first time. Every spring in Towada, women from around the area demonstrate their marksmanship while balancing on a galloping horse!

Yakisoba can incorporate many different types of meat; seafood, pork, beef, or poultry, but always starts with stir fried vegetables, noodles, and usually tonkatsu sauce. This is comfort food and is a stable in constant rotation by the street vendors during the months of summer festivals. Usually, if I want to make Yakisoba, I will purchase a kit from the local grocery store and a bag of pre-cut vegetables. But what can you do if you do not live near a japanese mega-grocery store?

With a few substitutions, you should be able to make yakisoba with items you may already have in you pantry. In place of the traditional noodles, many people substitute a package of dried ramen, cooked the noodles, but toss the spice pack!

Also, if you do not have tonkatsu sauce, "Bull dog" sauce in japan - you can substitue A-1, but add enough brown sugar to make it somewhat sweet. Or you can substitute worchestershire...

I have searched the internet looking for recipes and have found a great one at No Recipes. No Recipes is one of my favorite recipe websites. Whether it be private or public, bathing is a cultural ritual. This beautiful Japanese tub titled "Ofuro Rapsel" is was created by designer Matteo Thun, this unusual bathtub is completely made of larch wood. Historically, Japanese people enjoyed a daily bathing ritual with their friends and neighbours in a public bath (the sento) or in a hot spring bath (the onsen). However, in modern times, most people have a private ofuro (bath), while the onsen and the sento remain popular for many Japanese people. The bath is a wonderful way of leaving the stresses of the day behind. Who wouldn't love to have this bath to look forward to at the end of a long stressful day?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 307px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--U1xxdHkdBM/TjXhW11zg4I/AAAAAAAAAJE/YHixAoHH-W0/s400/Japanese-Ofuro-Bathroom-Design-Inspiration%2B2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5635658291250168706" />
This design is a more modern take on the traditional Japanese bath with the Zen-like emphasis on the view and the use of natural materials. After weeks of toil and frustration, I have settled on a logo for new in nippon. I hope you like it! I wanted to keep the logo simple while trying an Asian theme by utilizing a few of my new favorite design elements.

I really love the organic shape of the ginkgo leaf.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 164px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QIP-4pUSjmM/TjSdjSJoGEI/AAAAAAAAAHQ/l1Nt2tUG5YQ/s400/gingko.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5635302263240529986" />

When we were visiting the oldest ginkgo tree in Japan earlier this spring, I was inspired by the simple, yet identifiable shape of the leaf. I brought back a leaf from the tree to use as a design inspiration. The color I chose is from the Pantone Fall 2011 color report, the color is Pantone 14 - 0740 . I found this color is similar to the yellow hue of the ginkgo leaf during the fall.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 303px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hTBdqpgH8zE/TjSeI-42R7I/AAAAAAAAAHg/FdZ2DTdRCRA/s400/PANTONE_FCR_FALL_2011%255B1%255D-2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5635302910904911794" />

In addition, I worked in the circle as a tribute to my host country taking the circle element from their flag. The circle represents the East and also since the shape represents the rising sun I felt that it could also signify the hope of a new beginning and the optimism I feel about the future!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 274px; height: 184px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ry_zmvSIIu0/TjSdjmTLSnI/AAAAAAAAAHY/r8hmofK2R60/s400/japanese%2Bflag.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5635302268649294450" />

Please let me know if you like the new logo!

You can bake your donut in a this donut pan made by Wilson and available at Sur La Table.

<img style="float:center; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oReAf4OWTIE/ThVZ6Io4qOI/AAAAAAAAAFY/qtN8yZkltwE/s400/donut%2Bpan.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626502164755556578" />

Or if you want, you can make your donuts in a muffin pan, as I did.
For this recipe, courtesy of Mrs. Fields Secrets, you will need:

1 cup sugar
1 large egg
1/4 cup oil (vegetable or canola)
3/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

2 tablespoons butter, melted (for sugared donuts)
1/2 cup super fine sugar
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 cup confectioner’s sugar
1 cup jelly (optional)

<img style="float:center; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-n-v5azgYGdY/ThVaxVW9BsI/AAAAAAAAAFo/r_tHxh-1vJk/s400/donuts%2Bin%2Bthe%2Bbowl.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626503113062811330" />

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and prepare a muffin tin with non-stick cooking spray. In a large bowl, beat sugar and egg together until creamy and light-colored. Add oil, milk, and vanilla and mix well. In a medium bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg. Slowly add flour mixture into egg mixture until well combined. Fill muffin tins 3/4 full and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out mostly clean.

<img style="float:center; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 353px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6UqrRzQk5l4/ThVbEUVvt6I/AAAAAAAAAFw/atEd5LUnkfY/s400/donuts%2Bin%2Bmuffin%2Bpans.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626503439206823842" />

These would also work great in miniature muffin tins with a reduced cooking time of 8-10 minutes. Do not overcook! You want a nice, dense, moist cake.

For powdered donuts: While donuts are still warm to the touch, remove from tins and immediately roll the crust with powdered sugar, until it is well coated. Dust the tops with sugar as well.

For sugared donuts: Using a pastry brush, coat each donut with a thin layer of melted butter. Roll each buttered donut in the cinnamon/sugar mixture. Yummy! I hope you enjoy your donuts!

After completing the project the two ladies that were teaching the class asked that I come back the next week as they had a gift for me. When I arrived the next week bringing strawberry shortcake to show my appreciation, this was the surprise they had for me. They taught me how to make a japanese paper geisha. Although the doll is traditionally made with japanese washi paper, this is a perfect craft for using up those little scrapbook remnants you can't bear to part with.

You will need:

About four inches in paper for the kimono.

About an inch x quarter inch of matching paper to create the collar of the kimono.

About an inch x quarter inch of contrasting paper to create a scarf to go under the color.(mine was pink)

About an inch x half an inch of contrasting paper for the obi belt. (mine was pink and also green, I made two!)

About an 2 inches square of paper for the hair. (mine was black)

Any tiny bit of paper will do for the bow.

A white cardstock circle, about half an inch circumference and a small long, skinny piece for the body.

Glue (Elmers or Tacky)

Step One

<img style="float:center; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zywwfx70S_w/ThVJyqMx0GI/AAAAAAAAAEg/AFeYVlRo4Sg/s400/Step%2Bone.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626484444139475042" />

Cut your kimono paper into a long rectangle, twice the length of your kimono. Fold your kimono paper in half and cut out the shape as seen above. The top tab will be folded under to create a tuck (see step three for a better view). The edges of the sleeves should be slightly rounded to give the illusion of a sleeve. Cut a tiny triangle at the top of the fold to create the neck of the kimono.

Step Two

<img style="float:center; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HNxjDBgXfPk/ThVKuM53dtI/AAAAAAAAAEw/gSrcjM45tOg/s400/Step%2Bthree.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626485467067676370" />

Glue to Cardboard circle to the cardboard body with elmers or tacky glue. Fold in half and wrap the scarf piece around the neck.

Step Three

<img style="float:center; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XVXiAS5pqhQ/ThVKX0wDctI/AAAAAAAAAEo/EPeI99CWFtQ/s400/Step%2B2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626485082626945746" />

Fold under the bottom two tabs and glue. This is the bottom of the kimono. Fold under the top piece to create a tab as shown. Do not glue this part as you will need to insert the body of the doll into the kimono.

Step Four

<img style="float:center; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_siEDlHCw1s/ThVLZ_cxviI/AAAAAAAAAE4/nUS63Juh-iU/s400/step%2Bfour.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626486219370249762" />

Insert the body into the kimono. Adjust the scarf so that it is visible. Glue the body and glue the edges of the sleeves together. Fold and wrap a small piece of paper matching the kimono around the neck to form a collar.Wrap the obi belt around the doll and over the collar piece then secure it in the back with a dab of glue (see step five for a visual).

Step Five

<img style="float:center; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZUaMPWI9MeE/ThVNfw-sJTI/AAAAAAAAAFA/mX5l6UBis_g/s400/step%2Bfive.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626488517588428082" />

Cut three small strips of paper for the hair, taking care to cut two of the same size to wrap on the left and right side of the head, as seen in the picture. The hair can be as long or short as you want it to be. The longer piece, as seen in the picture, will be glued on top and will be wrapped around the head, gathered and secured on the back of the head with a dab of glue. See below for the placement of the pieces.

<img style="float:center; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-a2lAk-H5jKc/ThVN_DFG1TI/AAAAAAAAAFI/jNnen4bFtXI/s400/step%2Bsix.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626489055023125810" />

Now, just add a little twisted piece of paper for a bow and you are done!

<img style="float:center; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--XlBTjfugM4/ThVORDw94zI/AAAAAAAAAFQ/3dCFWozqBuw/s400/step%2B8.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626489364444734258" />

Write me and let me know how your doll turns out!

The five petal cherry blossom is seen everywhere in classical and pop cultural throughout Japan. Cherry blossom viewing is so popular a past time that the national weather service of Japan provides a blossom tracker so that people will know where the blossom are blooming and on what date. The viewing parties usually involve sake, food, and friends. No wonder the idea is catching on around the world! Cherry blossom viewing festivals are held in the USA in Washington, DC and also in Macon, Georgia. Because cherry blossoms have short blooming times and are fragile, the japanese have used to symbolize the transience of life and as a reminder to celebrate the beauty found in the moment.

<img style="float:center; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 386px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--2v37twNi1Q/ThVFDxxfUMI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/JgROFvKiZw0/s400/photo%2Bwhite%2Bcherry%2Bblossom.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626479240672137410" />

Today we were walking through a park in Hachinohe, I spotted the first cherry blossoms we have seen this spring. There was a group of children playing around the tree, attempting to climb on the branches. Two little girls clutched a few small branches from the trees, admiring the beautiful white petals. As we approached the tree, one of the little girls ran up to me and began to introduce herself in japanese. I introduced my husband and myself and realized that I had just ran out of japanese conversational phrases. No matter. Although there was a language barrier and an age difference of about thirty years, we were both drawn to the beauty of the cherry blossom tree and both enjoyed the first signs of spring.

<img style="float:center; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1rjS8O373i0/ThVDI0aXxrI/AAAAAAAAAEA/DKcFm1jFgZ0/s400/photo%2Bcherry%2Bblossom%2Bblue%2Bsky.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626477128256571058" />

Ono no Komachi: The hue of the cherry (9th C. Oishii (Delicious)!

<img style="float:center; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8MqPh86eCQs/ThVBDiCzsbI/AAAAAAAAADo/8tDRufeIzrg/s400/cake%2Bwith%2Bfork.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626474838403297714" />

If you are looking for a new breakfast recipe to try this weekend, I have something quick, and also healthy. Try a steamed cake called mushi-pan! "Mushi" is japanese for "steamed" and this bread is very soft and sweet and more like a cake than a bread. This is definately a lo-cal recipe, because unlike cake, mushi-pan contains no butter or oil. I will share this basic recipe, courtesy of Misawa City News, and you can use your imagination and add whatever ingredients you want to flavor the mushi-pan. I added chopped apples to mine, but I think that blueberries or chocolate chips would be delicious! This is not a western-style cake, so if you like things really sweet, you may want to add more sugar or eat the mushi-pan with syrup or jam.

Ingredients:

1 Egg

2 tsp of Milk

2 tsp of Sugar

50g (1.7oz) of Flour ( I used whole wheat)

1 tsp of Baking Powder

In a small bowl, beat the egg, then add the milk and sugar. Mix well. Add the flour and baking powder, lightly mixing it and taking care not to make the batter sticky. If you have a steamer, boil water in the pot, and place the bowl into the steamer basket. Put on the lid and steam for about 12 minutes or until thoroughly cooked.

<img style="float:center; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zeLxXzeOpeo/ThVBqyk6LhI/AAAAAAAAAD4/a8QwPtZSEGE/s400/photo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626475512856194578" />

If you do not have a steamer, you can turn a plate upside down in a pot, pour about a cup of water around the plate, heat until boiling and then place the bowl on top of the plate. Cover and cook for 12 minutes.

<img style="float:center; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IGxezNktoV4/ThVBZi9IYjI/AAAAAAAAADw/7xsEFj7zBtI/s400/in%2Bpan%2Bcooking.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626475216605045298" />

It should look a little like this when it is done. Also, you can try using a toothpick to see if the cake is completely done.
