Question: Can You Go Blind with blepharoplasty?

Answer: This is a very rare complication that could occur due to bleeding inside the eye cone. Increased pressure from the bleeding leads to obstruction of the blood supply to the optic nerve. All board certified plastic surgeons are well trained on ways to prevent this complication and how to treat it very quickly if it happens.

Question: Hello, I am 25 years old, 5’2” tall and I weigh 135 lbs. I have not had a baby yet but I want to have a small tummy tuck and liposuction done all over my abdomen, back, love handles, inner thighs, under my chin, and take the good fat and do a Brazilian butt lift. Can I have that all done at the same time? I am also in very good health. I would be thankful if you reply. Thank You!

Answer: It’s Possible for you to have multiple procedure after labs but it will all depend on the amount of liposuction needed. It does not seem like you will require much liposuction based on your weight and height. I think it is feasible pending medical clearance and labs. Hope that helps!

Question: Will liposuction remove stretched out skin?

Answer: Only excision can completely get rid of stretched out skin. There is a minor skin retraction when liposuction is performed. This retraction in my mind is not enough to get rid of over stretched skin. Excision is the only way to be able to completely get rid of this problem.

Answer: Brazilian butt lift and inner thigh lift is possible, with complex post op. These are two different procedures, they could be done in the same time but this will require a complex post operative management. The fat harvested from the thigh area is not enough for the fat transfer and you will require harvesting from different areas.

Question: I got hit in the nose, and I’m wondering about how I can get it fixed. I don’t want to say i have a deviated septum because I don’t. I can breathe perfectly fine. It’s crooked and ruins my self-esteem. Is there a way to get this fixed off of my insurance? I should be having medicare/medicaid soon.

Will I need to have a nasty crooked scar, or a scar in general, on the tip of my nose even though it isn’t a whole nose fix? This was about a year and 1/2 ago. I know it’s been long, but I have parents that don’t find it very important as much as I do. What do I do to get it back to the way it was? Thanks.

Answer: Fixing a broken nose is mostly covered by insurance companies. Repair of nasal fractures and deviated septum are services covered by the most insurance companies. The incision needed for these surgeries are usually intra-nasal or a very small external incision that is easily hidden.

Many women have a little trouble getting themselves back into their former shape after childbirth. In addition, mothers are also likely to put their own care on the back burner after their children are born. When this happens, they can look to a mommy makeover not only to help them get their bodies back into their former shape, but also to help them feel good about themselves again. Women can look into a few surgical options at Newport Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery to get back on the road to restoring their bodies.

A mommy makeover focuses specifically on reversing the effects of childbearing such as getting rid of the last few stubborn pounds that do not want to disappear after childbirth. More mothers are recognizing the importance of focusing on themselves as part of taking care of their families. Of course, each makeover will be different for each woman, but there are a variety of procedures that are available with this makeover. A few popular options include breast augmentation, breast lift, liposuction and a tummy tuck.

Many women choose to have breast augmentation as part of their makeover packages. Sometimes breastfeeding can give the breasts a deflated appearance, so women will want to rejuvenate them. Drooping or sagging breasts are not the only concerns many women have when they seek augmentation. Many are also concerned with a lack of volume or stretch marks. They can achieve more feminine and natural looking breasts through either saline or silicone implants. This procedure is common and often combined with a few others to get your body back in pre-mommy shape.

Many women combine augmentation with a breast lift in order to get breasts to look full and youthful again. A breast lift typically removes excessive skin and tissue in order to make the breasts look perkier or in other words, lifted. There are many techniques that surgeons can use to keep the breasts youthful and firmer for a longer period of time. The exact one will depend upon the needs and wishes of the patient as well as the surgeon’s recommendations for reducing the amount of scarring and to help the patient recover quickly and without any complications.

One or both of these breast procedures are also usually combined with another popular surgery: the tummy tuck. The abdomen is one of the toughest areas of the body to eliminate the excess weight gained during pregnancy. It is quite difficult to get the abdomen muscles to return to their former shape after pregnancy has stretched them. A tummy tuck can get rid of deformities in the belly button, skin laxity and stretch marks, and leave you with abs that you would want to show off in a bikini.

Liposuction is another common option in a mommy makeover package. This procedure can target a variety of areas of the body including the abdomen, buttocks, cheeks, chin, hips, knees, neck, thighs and upper arms. Fat is removed from these areas and they can also be re-sculpted or contoured to create a body one truly desires. Liposuction is one of the more viable options for those who have nearly reached their weight loss goals but are having trouble getting rid of those last few pounds or the excess fat that stubbornly continues to hold on.

When one is considering a mommy makeover, she should also consider combining procedures if she feels she will need more than one. There are many good reasons to have all the desired procedures done during the same session. For instance, it generally costs less to have all the surgery done at once. Those who are anxious about general anesthesia will only have to undergo it once rather than several times. Furthermore, it does not take any longer to recover than it would if all the procedures were done separately.

Plastic surgery is still growing in popularity, despite the fact that insurance companies don’t usually pay for procedures that aren’t medically necessary. While many common plastic surgery procedures are warranted by medical necessity, the top five most popular plastic surgeries are usually performed for cosmetic reasons.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), there were 13.1 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States in 2010, an increase of 5% from 2009. In addition, 5.3 million reconstructive procedures were performed, an increase of 3% from 2009. While they were not one of the top five procedures performed, facelifts saw a dramatic rise of 9% from 2009 to 2010, with almost 113 thousand procedures.

1: Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation, also called mammaplasty, has been the number one most popular plastic surgery procedure since 2006, with a 2% increase from 2009 to 2010. There were almost 296 thousand breast augmentations in 2010, with an increase of 39% over the decade. Silicon implants are making a comeback in popularity as well, having been used in 60% of all breast implants in 2010, up from 50% in 2009.

Some of the reasons for breast augmentation include enlarging both breasts; replacing a breast that was removed as a result of breast cancer; making asymmetrical breasts equal in size, a condition that can occur naturally or as a result of breastfeeding; and congenital micromastia, a condition that results from breasts that don’t develop during puberty.

Recovery time after breast augmentation surgery can be up to two weeks before a woman can return to her normal activities, or longer for active women who exercise vigorously or participate in sports.

2: Nose Reshaping

Also known as rhinoplasty, nose reshaping was performed in over 252 thousand plastic surgery procedures in 2010, down 1% from 2009. Nose reshaping is usually done in order to resize the nose in accordance with the rest of the face. Other reasons include fixing cosmetic damage to a broken nose or in the case of a deviated septum, in which breathing is inhibited and can be surgically improved.

Rhinoplasty involves removing, rearranging, or reshaping a nose’s bone and cartilage. The recovery time for rhinoplasty is about ten days, during which time the bruising caused by the procedure will heal.

3: Eyelid Reshaping

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, was performed nearly 209 thousand times in 2010, an increase of 3% from 2009. Eyelid surgery is performed in order to reduce wrinkles, reduce chronic puffiness, remove bags under the eyes, or to remove sagging skin for either cosmetic reasons or because it is impairing vision.

Eyelid surgery can initially cause increased puffiness due to swelling, but this will be reducing significantly within about ten days, which is the average recovery time for blepharoplasty. The swelling and puffiness will continue to go down for anywhere from several weeks to several months.

4: Liposuction

Liposuction removes fat from areas of the body in order to reduce body size. Just over 203 thousand liposuction surgeries were performed in 2010, a 2% increase from 2009. There are three types of liposuction surgery:

Tumescent liposuction is the most common kind, in which a saline solution is injected into the targeted area and then both the liquid saline and the fat are suctioned out of the body using a cannula, a small, hollow, metal tube. Fluid retention from the saline is a possible side effect of tumescent liposuction.

Ultrasonic assisted liposuction uses a cannula that releases ultrasonic energy that melts the fat so it can be suctioned out of the body.

Cold-laser liposuction uses cold laser beams to similarly melt fat before it is suctioned out of the body. It is less risky than ultrasonic assisted liposuction, which can cause internal and external burns.

Recovery time is one to two weeks, depending on which area of the body the procedure was performed on.

5: Tummy Tuck

Otherwise known as abdominoplasty, the tummy tuck was performed over 116 thousand times in 2010, just a 1% increase from 2009, but a whopping 86% increase over the last decade. The reason for the drastic increase is because a tummy tuck involves removing excess skin—not fat—from the abdominal area, and many women who have loose abdominal skin post pregnancy are prime candidates from this type of plastic surgery.

The recovery time for abdominoplasty is two to three weeks, slightly longer than other forms of plastic surgery, because the stomach skin and muscles are involved in most body movements. For physically active women, it may take even longer to resume their normal athletic activities.
