Austin Pune Sister City COVID-19 Fundraiser

Pune currently has the largest number of COVID-19 infected cases throughout India (as of early May approx. 885,592 cases). Austin Pune Sister City International (APSCI) team is working with the partner organization, Pune City Connect, in their fight against COVID-19.

Funds raised through this initiative will be used to provide:

1. Critical equipment to the Government Hospitals

2. Food supplies to families in need

3. To enable vaccination roll out

All funds donated via GiveIndia.org fundraiser will be directed to Pune City Connect which is a division of Lighthouse Communities Foundation – a nonprofit entity (beneficiary in this scenario).

As Austin’s international organization, we promote understanding, friendship, and cooperation with our sister cities and sister countries all over the world. As we mourn with our communities the deaths of eight shooting victims in Atlanta, six of Asian descent, and the ongoing rising violence against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI), we stand in solidarity with our AAPI community and condemn acts of violence, racism and hate.

Austin Sister Cities International is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion and will continue to promote peace, respect and mutual understanding within our local communities and sister cities around the world. As global citizens, we must speak up for inclusive, supportive, and equitable communities and speak out against acts of hate, discrimination, and racism.

The Chair of Austin Sister Cities International serves as the Executive Officer of the organization with the following duties and responsibilities:

preside at all meetings of the membership and of the Board of Directors,
provide general supervision of the affairs of the organization,

The Vice Chair of Austin Sister Cities International works closely with the Chair to ensure that they are prepared to perform those duties if needed.

The Secretary of Austin Sister Cities International keeps a lasting record of meetings, decisions, activities, and involvement:

provide advice and resources to the board on topics such as governance issues, amendments to the state laws, and the like, that will assist them in fulfilling their fiduciary duties.

The Treasurer of Austin Sister Cities International is charged with overseeing the management and reporting of the organization’s finances:

uses standard accounting methods to maintain a checking account and process all payments (checks, wires, paypal etc.) for the general fund and individual committee’s funds as applicable,
prepares and presents quarterly and annual reports to the executive board,
assists Communications Director with online donation platforms
oversee who has access to the organization’s funds and any outstanding bills or debts owed, create and maintain systems for ensuring the organization’s ongoing solvency and oversee the development of the organization’s financial policies,
prepare an annual budget, as well as regularly monitor and compare the actual revenues and expenses incurred against such budget,
keep the board apprised of key financial events, trends, and concerns, and her assessments of the organization’s fiscal health.
complete or ensure completion of required financial reporting forms (including the IRS Form 990) in a timely manner and making these forms available for the board’s review.

The Communications Director of Austin Sister Cities International is responsible for planning, development and implementation of all of the organization’s marketing strategies, marketing communications, and public relations activities, both external and internal.

represent the organization to the public (in person at events, and virtually by maintaining ASCI’s website and social media)

Statement COVID-19

As Austin’s international organization, we stand with our sister cities and sister countries all over the world. Our mission to promote international understanding, friendship and cooperation is even more important now when uncertainty affects everyone across the globe.

Austin Sister Cities International has 14 sister cities, at least one on every inhabited continent of the globe, and all of us have been hit hard by the pandemic. In these difficult times, we want to make it known that ASCI is here to support and uplift our international family. As Citizen Diplomats, we at ASCI believe whole-heartedly in international community and solidarity, which is at the core of our work. Although international travel isn’t possible right now, we will continue to connect through technology, which is proving to ease our feelings of isolation. However, we cannot wait to gather again in person with our dear friends all over the world and to continue creating new connections that become long-lasting relationships.

The people of our sister cities and their countries in North and South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia, are facing similar challenges daily during this COVID-19 outbreak. Life, as we all knew it, has changed, but we will support each other and get through these days together.

FOUR SEASONS HOTEL AUSTIN CELEBRATES "FRIENDSHIP" WITH 2019 GINGERBREAD VILLAGE

Inspired by the magic of snow globes, this winter Four Seasons Hotel Austin will fill its lobby with dozens of tiny gingerbread scenes representing one of the biggest concepts of them all: friendship.

Scheduled to debut on November 25, 2019, the Hotel’s 2019 Gingerbread Village will feature an Austin cityscape – covered by a giant crystal-clear dome – surrounded by smaller domes that depict the skylines of five of Austin’s sister cities.

“I’ve always been enamoured by the magic that lives within snow globes. I remember as a kid, tipping them left and right, turning them over and watching in wonder as the miniature snowflakes whirled all around,” says Executive Pastry Chef Amanda Pallagi-Naim. “Each year we aim to choose a concept that will appeal to both children and adults, so I love how this year’s theme wraps a beloved holiday symbol into a universal message of friendship.”

The entire display will fill much of the downtown Austin Hotel’s open-concept lobby. At the centre, the six-foot-diameter (1.8 metre) dome will feature such Austin institutions as the Capitol, Franklin Barbecue, Barton Springs Pool, Torchy's Tacos and Lady Bird Lake, among several others.

Smaller three-foot-diameter (one metre) domes will be interspersed throughout, highlighting noteworthy buildings or sights in the selected sister cities, including the Chateau d’Angers in Angers, France; Usa Shrine in Oita, Japan; and the Christmas Market in Koblenz, Germany. Rounding out the display are scenes from Saltillo, Mexico and Adelaide, Australia.

“It was truly difficult to narrow our choices down from Austin’s 14 sister cities, as each one has distinct charms and beautiful architecture. Ultimately it came down to how my team connected with the destination personally and our passion for recreating the buildings in gingerbread,” says Pallagi-Naim.

Though in miniature, Pallagi-Naim estimates the Austin skyline and surrounding structures will take upwards of 100 hours to construct, with each of the sister city domes clocking in at more than 40 hours due to the intricacy required to replicate such unique angles and designs. “Gingerbread villages based on imaginary houses are easy,” laughs Pallagi-Naim. “When you’re trying to recreate well-known structures that are treasures in their respective cities – using completely edible ingredients, no less – there’s a lot more pressure.”

Luckily her pastry team’s hard work isn't without reward as all of the domes will be sold to sponsors, with proceeds donated to People’s Community Clinic, the go-to health clinic for some of the city’s most vulnerable citizens. Since 2005, more than USD 80,000 has been raised for local non-profits through the annual sale of gingerbread houses to individuals and businesses.

Originated in 1956 as a way to strengthen relationships between people from different countries following World War II, the Sister Cities Program began in Austin in 1968 with Saltillo, Mexico. Activities between sister cities usually involve educational exchange programs; economic or trade programs; sharing development ideas; or arts and culture. El alcalde de Austin, Steve Adler, agradeció la hospitalidad de saltillenses

El alcalde Manolo Jiménez entregó a Steve Adler, mayor de Austin, Texas, las llaves de Saltillo.

Con ello, los lazos entre ambas ciudades se fortalecen, lo que constituye la generación de grandes oportunidades para la capital del sarape en materia comercial y cultural.

Austin es la capital del estado de Texas, mismo que, si fuera un país, constituiría la sexta economía más fuerte del mundo.

Saltillo representa una potencia nacional e internacional, tanto por su clúster automotriz, como por sus indicadores en materia de calidad de vida y desempeño gubernamental.

“Al recibir las Llaves de Saltillo, usted recibe también el cariño y el respeto de nuestra gente por usted y por la ciudad de Austin.

“Nuestra relación de amistad y colaboración institucional es un gran ejemplo de lo que podría ser el vínculo entre México y Estados Unidos, en donde no se construyan muros, sino puentes que nos permitan trabajar como hermanos, amigos y socios”, remarcó.

En su momento, el alcalde Steve Adler señaló que fue un honor recibir las llaves de la ciudad de manos del alcalde Manolo Jiménez y agradeció la hospitalidad recibida durante su estancia.

Pune Is Austin's New Official Sister City

The official signing ceremony launching the Austin-Pune Sister City relationship took place on July 24, 2019 at Austin City Hall. Pune is the eighth largest city in India with a population of 4 million. Austin and Pune’s economies rely heavily on the IT and manufacturing sectors. Additionally, Pune is considered the cultural capital of the state of Maharastra and the education capital of India or “the Oxford of the East.”

The Honorable Mayor Mrs. Mukta Shailesh Tilak was welcomed by the Honorable Mayor Steve Adler.

2019 Young Artists and Authors Showcase - GLOBAL CITIZENS: RESILIENT COMMUNITIES

The Young Artists and Authors Showcase (YAAS) is an annual contest that encourages youth worldwide to express the mission of Sister Cities International through original artwork, literature, and photography.

Submissions are centered around an annual theme and judged based on originality, composition, and theme interpretation.

Selected Grand Prize Winners in each category (art, literature, and photography) win a $1000 prize. After the finalists for art, literature, and photography have been announced, their works are displayed in Sister Cities around the U.S. in a year-long tour

The deadline to submit entries is April 1, 2019

Resilience refers to how well an individual or community can prepare for adversity or challenges.

How can future global leaders prepare their communities to respond to the global challenges of the 21st century?
How does international experience affect an individual or community’s ability to adapt?
What are examples of resilience in a global context?

This year’s theme asks students to explore these questions by highlighting citizen diplomacy and the creative ways that we create peace through people-to-people interaction.

HOW TO ENTER

Students and member cities should send their art and/or literature, along with their corresponding completed entry form, to Sister Cities International by mail or by emailing youth@sistercities.org. Click on the photos below to download and complete your entry form.

Austin-Oita (Japan) at the Austin Marathon

AUSTIN MARATHON WATER STATION VOLUNTEERS
Calling all volunteers! Join AOSCC for a fun community event. Practice your Japanese. Get to know people who are also interested in Japan. The event is supporting a Water Station for the Austin Marathon on Sunday, February 17.
GREAT event for kids who need volunteer hours. Share this with kid's school. Kids under 12 need a parent to volunteer with them. We will have lots of fun again. Food provided. You will learn some Japanese to cheer on the runners!
The location is easy to get to: Aid Station Mile 18 at the Dean Keeton / Dancy Bus Stop just east of UT at I-35. There is a parking lot.
The hours are 7 am - 1 pm on Sunday, February 17. You will be released early if the runners have finished early.  You will be given training on site at 7 am.

Austin nightlife just got a little bigger–and a little brighter. Fresh off a luminous label showcase series in London, Austin-based record label Big Indie is set to make a splash on their side of the pond with the Dec. 16 debut of Big Nights: a recurring event where the local label shows off their biggest, brightest talents, and does what they do best: provide a stage to artists powering Texas. The Sunday, Dec. 16 event will begin at 6 p.m. at Antone’s, headlined by newly signed artist Jackie Venson. It’s the perfect kickoff to an event that’s sure to show how much creativity and sheer talent the label and its talented cadre of creators will bring to the Texas music scene and beyond. Austin Sister Cities (ASCI) is a volunteer-driven local 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that thrives on dedicated members. The Executive Board consists of five Officers: the Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, and Communication Director, along with Chairs of individual sister cities committees and at-large members.

Austin Sister Cities International is holding elections in January 2019 to bring two committed and energetic individuals to the ASCI Board of Directors for one-year terms. We are seeking candidates to fill the volunteer board position of Executive Secretary and Executive Treasurer. Service on the Board is an excellent opportunity to refine your skills and share your vision with a dynamic group.

Position Description and Requirements:

The Secretary of Austin Sister Cities International keeps a lasting record of meetings, decisions, activities, and involvement:

keep accurate records of membership and attendance at each meeting, (take notes of each meeting and write accurate minutes for inclusion in the ASCI folder on Google Drive),
oversee and file the organization’s records and related materials,
provide advice and resources to the board on topics such as governance issues, amendments to the state laws, and the like, that will assist them in fulfilling their fiduciary duties.

The Treasurer of Austin Sister Cities International is charged with overseeing the management and reporting of the organization’s finances:

uses standard accounting methods to maintain the checking account and process all payments (checks, wires, paypal etc.) for the general fund and individual committee’s funds as applicable,
prepares and presents quarterly and annual reports to the executive board,
assists Communications Director with online donation platforms
oversee who has access to the organization’s funds and any outstanding bills or debts owed, create and maintain systems for ensuring the organization’s ongoing solvency and oversee the development of the organization’s financial policies,
prepare an annual budget, as well as regularly monitor and compare the actual revenues and expenses incurred against such budget,
keep the board apprised of key financial events, trends, and concerns, and her assessments of the organization’s fiscal health.

Austin Taiko will kick off the evening followed by Corps Multiple, an Austin-based, French music & dance company, Cherry Plum from Austin’s Sister City of Angers, and internationally-influenced (but Austin-based) musicians Atlas Maior fresh off several international tours to China, Spain and France round out the programming. Attendees to ASCI Nights must be 21+. A $5 cover directly supports the performing artists.

Austin Sister Cities International, in collaboration with Alliance Abroad, is proud to present The Austin Sister Cities International Internship Program.

The goal of The ASCI Internship Program is to recruit young professionals from Austin’s established Sister Cities in order to strengthen our international friendships and develop relationships with some of the world’s most promising individuals.

This program is scheduled to launch in January 2019. The first ASCI intern to be pre-approved by Alliance Abroad is Daniel Castillo Lopez, from Saltillo, Mexico.

Though Daniel has been approved to participate as an ASCI intern, Alliance Abroad requires that he be assigned to a host company before his visa can be processed. WE NEED YOUR HELP. Austin, TX signs Friendship Agreement with Pune, India

A delegation led by the City of Austin, the Austin Pune Sister City Initiative and the Greater Austin Asian Chamber of Commerce was in Pune, India to sign a historic friendship agreement.

An agreement to this effect was signed by Pune Mayor Mukta Tilak and Alison Alter, Council Member, district 10, Austin, on September 26 in Pune.

The International Office at The University of Texas at Austin has been selected as a host university of the prestigious Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI), a five-week institute that will bring 14 Latin American and Caribbean leaders to the Forty Acres this fall.

To help personalize the experience and promote intercultural exchange, we would like our YLAI Fellows to have the opportunity to stay with local Austinites for one weekend (Saturday – Sunday) during their visit.

We are currently looking for volunteers to host one to two YLAI Fellows October 6th – 7th.

YLAI Fellows are between the ages of 25-35.

Saltillo, Coahuila.- Beyond the bonds of friendship exists the relationship of Sister Cities.

The Chambers of Commerce of Austin and Saltillo are "devoted to strengthening business ties between both communities," said Luis Rodriguez, president of the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

"We have strong bridges of friendship, bridges of history and bridges of love ... now we need to reinforce our bridge of economy," said Rodriguez at a meeting held at the Saltillo business campus of Bordarte.

At the meeting, in which business and civil representatives from both cities participated, they reviewed investment opportunities offered by the Coahuilanese Capital.

Jorge Tafich Martínez, president of the Canaco Saltillo and general counselor of Concanaco, which brings together more than 600 chambers of commerce throughout Mexico, offered that "they have the confidence so that whatever one may require, whoever wants to work, can invest in Saltillo, come to us ".

Furthermore, in the framework of the 441st anniversary celebrations of Saltillo, the company Bordarte received the members of the Sister Cities Committees of Saltillo and Austin,

In the event, which was chaired by businessman Pedro Quintanilla, together with the leaders of both committees Nick Barreiro and Jesús Castilla, members of the private initiative of both cities were present.

Quintanilla offered a message of the origins of Bordarte, remembering when Doña Ofelia started the business 25 years ago with just one embroidery machine, until her current stage in which she has become an exporting firm in different countries, to which produces liners for the Corvette and headers for vehicles including Mercedes Benz.

"Thank you very much for receiving us, Saltillo is a spectacular place. Of all my travels around the world, of all the people I have known, where I am comfortable is here, where I am happy is with you, "said Nick Barreiro, president of the Committee of Sister Cities of Austin.

Peelander-Z Featured at Aug. 11 Japanese Festival

Japanese action comic punk band Peelander-Z will headline a family-friendly summer festival celebrating Japanese culture. The 2018 Oita Japan Festival #OitaATX is scheduled 12-4 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Asian American Resource Center (AARC) and will include entertainment and activities for all ages. The Austin-Oita Sister Committee is hosting the event.

Attired in colorful anime-like costumes, New York-based Peelander-Z promises a performance with intense audience participation and a chance for the entire family to exercise and rock out. The band has appeared at major music festivals and been featured on such TV programs as VH1’s “Best Week Ever” and Comedy Central’s “Upright Citizens Brigade.” Media outlets including SPIN, Rolling Stone, Village Voice, NPR, The Onion and others have covered the band.

The festival also will showcase a dynamic Japanese drumming performance by Austin Taiko, an elegant Japanese tea ceremony by Central Texas Chado, and hands-on children activities such as origami folding, kanji writing, and using chopsticks. Seminars about traveling and doing business in Japan will be conducted during the event.

A Shodo calligraphy contest will feature five age groups that each will have one minute to re-create a calligraphy artwork. The audience will vote on the calligraphy reproduction that most resembles the original work, and members of the winning group will win prizes. Contestants can participate regardless of whether or not they know how to draw Japanese calligraphy.

Attendees may purchase traditional Japanese food and drinks, and such wares as kimonos, calligraphy and art. A silent auction, which will include a 2019 SXSW interactive badge, also will be held.

Tickets are required for attendance at the festival and are now available for purchase: $10 for ages 13 and older and $5 for ages 5-12. Children 4 and younger will be admitted free. Oasis, Texas Brewing and London’s Hackney Brewery have made the Cockney Cowboy Calling Hybrid Red Lager, a name that nods to Austin roots rocker Joe Ely’s relationship with the English band the Clash and their “London Calling” album.

Pianist SungEun Park has extensively performed as a solo pianist and chamber musician throughout Korea, Italy and the United States. Dr. Park has earned her degrees in Piano Performance from the University of Texas at Austin (DMA), Texas State University (MM). Dr. Park joins the Texas State International Piano Festival as Associate Program Director. She also serves as a Director at Austin Harmony Youth Orchestra.

Nick Barreiro, chair of the Austin-Saltillo Sister Cities Association will gather with representatives of other cities and counties from the USA and Mexico in Guadalajara as part of the All Mexico – US Sister Cities Mayor’s Summit, on Thursday, February 15, 2018 - Saturday, February 17, 2018.

The purpose of this summit is to discuss ways to advance sister city programs between the US and Mexico into the future. It is a great opportunity to showcase grassroots citizen diplomacy in US – Mexico partnerships, revitalize diplomatic relationships, and launch new and innovative programs between communities in each country related to arts and culture; business and trade; youth and education; and humanitarian assistance.

The conference theme of Independence & Interdependence focuses on celebrating the historical ties between US and Mexican civic society, business, cultural and education institutions.

Austin Film Society announces 2018 partnership with Premiers Plans Festival d’Angers

(AUSTIN, TEXAS – December 15, 2017) Austin Film Society (AFS) and Premiers Plans Festival d’Angers announce their 2018 collaboration with programs in Angers, France and Austin, Texas. AFS and Premiers Plans have a shared passion for cinema past and present, and the future of film culture that is represented by emerging filmmakers. The organizations have forged an ongoing partnership, now in its fourth year, to promote film culture and discovery in the cinephile hubs of Angers, France and Austin, Texas.

AFS and Premiers Plans will co-present a program of defining works of American independent cinema, featuring Austin writer/filmmaker John Pierson, at the 30th anniversary of the French festival (January 12-21), and will co-host the annual New French Cinema Week in Austin at the AFS Cinema (April 25-29).

At the Premiers Plans Festival, John Pierson, film producer, author and filmmaker advocate, will present a selection of essential 80s and 90s independent films which he chronicled in his 1996 book “Spike, Mike, Slackers and Dykes.” Pierson will screen some of the game-changing independent films that he represented and supported, including Richard Linklater's SLACKER and BOYHOOD, Spike Lee's SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT, and Kevin Smith's CLERKS. Pierson will also present selections of his newly re-released magazine style television show on independent film, SPLIT SCREEN, (now on Criterion/FilmStruck) for the French audience.

The two film organizations will continue their partnership for the fourth edition of New French Cinema Week in Austin, a festival of Francophone film discoveries, to occur April 25-29 at the AFS Cinema. New French Cinema Week welcomes francophone filmmakers and guests for premieres of their films, often showing for the first time in the US. The full line up will be announced in March.

Past AFS programs at Premiers Plans in Angers have featured guests including David Zellner (DAMSEL, KUMIKO, THE TREASURE HUNTER), composer David Wingo (GEORGE WASHINGTON, LOVING, MUD), documentarian and University of Texas at Austin professor Paul Stekler (GEORGE WALLACE: SETTIN’ THE WOODS ON FIRE) and AFS Head of Film and Creative Media Holly Herrick.

Premiers Plans Festival d’Angers, founded in 1988, is a festival dedicated to discovery, with 100 first European films presented each year alongside retrospectives of major artists. About John Pierson
A legend of American independent cinema, John Pierson was the first producer's representative to enter the ultra-independent film scene of the 80s and 90s, representing a class of emerging filmmakers that included Spike Lee, Kevin Smith, Michael Moore and Richard Linklater. After witnessing a changing industry and film culture from the inside, Pierson authored the book "Spike, Mike, Slackers and Dykes" which chronicled this era of American filmmaking. The book was named "the bible for independents” by Peter Biskind. Pierson went on to co-create SPLIT SCREEN, an original television series about independent film, with his wife Janet Pierson, Head of SXSW Film. The show, which ran from 1997-2001, featured segments and interviews with many indie film characters of its era, including Harmony Korine, Wes Anderson and Miranda July. From 2006 to 2012, Pierson taught at The University of Texas at Austin, where he was named one of Variety's Leaders in Learning. Seeking new adventures following his teaching period, Pierson headed up a new China film production initiative for Justin Lin and Perfect Storm Entertainment in 2014-15, and still wonders if that misbegotten adventure is material for a future book. In his heart of hearts, John Pierson loves movie theaters. He ran the legendary Bleecker Street Cinema in 1982-83 a few years after graduating from NYU Film School, got married to Janet at the Film Forum in 1983, and cajoled her and their two kids into moving to Fiji for a year in 2002 to show free movies at the world’s most remote theater, the 180 Meridian Cinema – a memorable experience captured in the Steve James documentary REEL PARADISE.

Mr. Jiménez Salinas will meet with the Mayor of Austin, Steve Adler at City Hall to discuss the importance of the sister city relationship and ongoing collaboration between the two cities. This meeting will be followed by visits with APD Chief Manley at the Austin Police Station, and AFD representative Heather Arispe at the Austin Fire Station #1.

In the evening, the Austin-Saltillo Sister Cities Assoc. in collaboration with the Consulado General De Mexico en Austin, is hosting an intimate welcome reception for Saltillo Mayor Elect, to enable conversation about the importance of connectivity between the US and Mexico and the impact that Global Cities have on international relations.

From Koblenz: A Handwerkskammer Special Edition featuring Austin Sister Cities

Sister City Arrangement Koblenz-Austin Celebrates 25th Anniversary

There are 8458 km. between Koblenz and Austin, the capital of Texas. Both cities share a 25-year old sister city arrangement. Political current events, especially these days, definitely influence whether Germany and the U.S. feel close or distant to each other. Beyond the big politics however, personal connections between citizens of both cities define the relationship with each other. HwK (Handwerkskammer [Chamber of crafts]) Vice President Mark Scherhag recently experienced how good it is.

“Everyone welcomed us warmly, and we constantly sensed how lively the sister city arrangement was spiritedly acted out throughout its inhabitants,” Mark Scherhag enthusiastically stated after his return from Texas. Together with government and business representatives from Koblenz, the Chamber of Crafts (HwK) Vice President, and automotive industrialist traveled to Austin from the Rhine-Mosel city. The travel schedule included conversations with Mayor Steve Alder as well as with meetings with entrepreneurs, education representatives, or even with a former motor-vehicle apprentice who was trained as a motor-vehicle mechanic at Autohaus Scherhag.

In 1995, Chris Hofmayer went from Austin to Koblenz and began his training at Autohaus Scherhag. Back then, the sister city arrangement was only three years old.

For the high school graduate, the trip across the pond to “good old Germany” was more than just a professional step. Many personal contacts shaped his apprenticeship, and the Texan talks about numerous friendships he maintains to this day.

Furthermore, he came to know and appreciate the values of the dual-track education. Today, Hofmayer still talks about the German system enthusiastically, and still has great memories of his experience with the training triad of operations, vocational school and the Chamber of Crafts. Following his return to the States he kept in touch with the motor-vehicle trade before changing into socio-pedagogical support. “The foundation for everything that I have achieved was the craft and training in Koblenz,” he said in a great compliment to Mark Sherhag, who visited his former apprentice in Austin.

Education was a major concern during the visit of Koblenz delegation with representatives of the Austin Community College (ACC). There has been cooperation between the HwK and ACC since 1999, for example with the welder education of U.S. students in the Koblenz Metal and Technology Center or the COMPRO program that is supported by the European Commission and the U.S. Ministry of Education. Following up on the former, talks with Troy Defrates, professor in welding technologies took place. Understanding the importance of education exchange with a human aspect, Mark Scherhag states that: “Youth exchange has a long-standing tradition and needs to be continued.” He finds that “we have achieved much in the metalworking.” Scherhag also recalls the transatlantic cooperation stemming from the Koblenz Bundesgartenschau that Austin supported with five metal made figures (see picture), designed in the U.S. and made in Koblenz using a laser technique. The Texan motives feature saddles, lassos, horses, and cowboy boots. [During the Bundesgartenschay] the figures could be found in the area of the Basilika St. Kastor and delighted the visitors. Now, they are located outdoors next to the HwK’s Center for Nutrition and Health.

Another success story linking handicrafts and the American way of life comes from the Texan tile installation and import company “Clay Imports,” that was visited by the Koblenz delegation. On site HwK Vice President Scherhag learned that “the company thinks outside of the box and works with partners in Turkey, Morocco, and Mexico. The company owners are also interested in in a cooperation with Germany. Not so much in the area of tile manufacturing but installation techniques.” Educational workshops in exemplary business of the Koblenz region would be a possibility to improve the Americans’ artisanal “know-how” – an idea that the Texans were very receptive to.

The political dialogue was the focus of the meeting with Mayor Steve Adler. The 25th Anniversary of the Austin-Koblenz relationship was celebrated by invitation to Austin’s City Hall. In addition to highlighting past achievements, there was much talk about future developments. Mark Scherhag concluded with “On behalf of the Koblenz Chamber of Crafts, we have presented an invitation to the [Austin] Mayor, and Steve Adler indicated his interest in visiting the Rhine-Mosel city.”

For beyond the “big politics” between Berlin and Washington, there is a relationship that continues to remain close despite the 8458 km between the cities. This relationship is shaped by the peoples of both cities. And that is good and in full of life.

Does the student speak English?
Yes, all students have a demonstrated level of proficiency in English with the goal of improving.

What is the financial obligation?
AFS students have their own spending money for social and school activities, clothes, etc. You are not required to provide spending money or an allowance.

What about medical expenses?
The student’s tuition fee includes medical insurance.

Are Host Families paid?
No, however, you will be entitled to a tax deduction each month that your AFS student stays in your home.

The partner organization of the Austin-Saltillo Sister Cities Association, the Comité Internacional Ciudades Hermanas Saltillo has elected a new president for 2017-2018: Jesus Castilla, a longtime, passionate supporter of international relations and the sister cities relationship between Austin and Saltillo.

Saltillo, Couah. – With 31 votes at a state-wide member meeting, the Saltillo International Sister Cities Committee elected Jesus Castilla Sanchez as President for 2017-2018.

Castilla Sanchez succeeds Juan Jose Cornejo, who concluded his tenure as head of the organization. The committee met Tuesday night at the Hampton Inn. Notary Public Alberto Fabian Villarreal oversaw the voting process.

The following functioned as vote counters: Jose Antonio Garcia Guerra and Jesus Jimenez Alvarez; various ex-presidents served as witnesses, including: Lupita Escartin and Mario Ricardo. Gabriela Strozzi and Luis Torres, of the municipal president’s (mayor’s) office, officiated over the proceedings.

The Committee’s new president recognized the excellent work done by his predecessor, Cornejo Martinez. Mr. Martinez’ accomplishments include implementation of Saltillo Day in Austin, and Austin Day in Saltillo, which will be celebrated in the coming days, along with Saltillo’s anniversary as the capitol city of Coahuila.

Meeting participants also included: Jorge Tafich Martinez, secretary general of UOECES; Mirna Gonzalez, president, fire fighters’ association; business owners Miguel Whelock Aguayo, Mario Ricardo Hernandez, Franscisco Javier Grijalva; and numerous business owners and committee members.

The Austin-Saltillo Sister Cities Association held their last meeting before #AustinDay in Saltillo yesterday at Austin City Hall. We confirmed travel and lodging details, coordinated the gift exchange and established communication channels while outside of the U.S. A group of over 30 diverse delegates led by Council Member Pio Renteria is traveling to Saltillo, Mexico to promote international understanding, commemorate the historical relationship and to plan the next stages as sister cities. From Lima: Members of the Peruvian National Congress in Austin

Open World Leadership Center, Global Austin and Friendship Force of Austin have invited Members of the Peruvian National Congress to Austin to meet with their American counterparts. During their visit, the Peruvian delegation will attend committee meetings and legislative sessions to learn how their counterparts interact with relevant executive agencies, advocacy groups, and constituents on the subject of Accountable Governance.

The Austin Lima Sister Cities Committee is working alongside these organizations and helping with the planning and programming. ALSC is also hosting a Welcoming Reception and Farewell Reception for the Peruvian Members of Parliament.
