We deeply mourn the passing of Harold "Hal" Fearon. As founder and editor of the Journal from 1965-1974, Hal was instrumental in its evolution from the Journal of Purchasing to the Journal of Purchasing and Materials Management. This change was initiated long before the term "supply chain management" became mainstream, demonstrates Hal's visionary thinking that paved the way for the discipline. During his tenure as editor, 230 articles were published in the Journal, contributing significantly to the discipline's knowledge base. He was succeeded as editor by Paul Farrell.

In addition to his editorial contributions, Hal's impactful tenure at Arizona State University included chairing departments and establishing the Center for Advanced Purchasing Studies (CAPS). Outside of academia, he co-founded Rio Salado Bank in Tempe.

The world of supply chain management is indebted to Hal's pioneering spirit, and he will be deeply missed.
For more details on his life and contributions, please visit: https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/phoenix-az/harold-fearon-11508519

Paper Development Workshop at the Academy of Management Annual Meeting in Boston (August 6)

<figure class="

On Sunday, August 6, at the Academy of Management Annual Meeting in Boston, the Journal of Supply Chain Management hosted a Paper Development Workshop (PDW) named "From Less Unsustainable to Regenerative Supply Chains: Advancing Theory for Positive Change." This PDW served as a platform for scholars, practitioners, and researchers to collectively explore the transition from unsustainable to regenerative supply chain practices. Attendees engaged in insightful discussions moderated by Miriam Wilhelm. The panel of experts, including Mark Pagell, Jury Gualandris, Oana Branzei, Anne Quarshie, Ralph Hamann, and Martina Linnenluecke, provided valuable perspectives on driving sustainable transformations in supply chains. Interactive roundtable sessions facilitated meaningful exchanges, fostering cross-disciplinary learning and novel insights.

The PDW was strategically organized to cultivate innovative ideas in direct response to the "Call for Papers: Regenerative Supply Chains." This targeted initiative aimed to stimulate a collaborative intellectual effort, sparking a substantial discourse at introducing transformative ideas within regenerative supply chains.

Furthermore, we extend our encouragement to researchers and scholars to submit their contributions to this special issue.

Deadline for submission: March 1st, 2024

Link to the call for papers:
https://www.journalofsupplychainmanagement.com/new-blog/2023/3/20/call-for-papers-regenerative-supply-chains

JSCM's Impact Factor Soars to 10.6, Ranking 14th Highest Among Management Journals and Top Ranked for SCM

This week we learned that the Journal of Supply Chain Management’s impact factor has risen from 8.025 to 10.6, according to Clarivate Analytics. This, of course, shows the diligence of our editors, associate editors, reviewers, and authors. This impact factor ranks us as the 14th highest of all management journals and the top ranked for SCM.

We publish articles that challenge theoretical, methodological, and epistemological assumptions and have a strong societal impact. The complex and interconnected crises of our world are often related to supply chains, and we strongly believe that SCM research can help address these crises. JSCM is an empirical journal, and we are open to contemporary qualitative and quantitative approaches. We encourage submissions that move beyond naive positivism and that embrace the complexity and fluidity of our world.

Our publisher, Wiley, supports the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), which recommends “[not to use] journal-based metrics, such as Journal Impact Factors, as a surrogate measure of the quality of individual research articles, to assess an individual scientist’s contributions, or in hiring, promotion, or funding decisions.”

Paper Development Workshop in Wuhan, China (June 16)

<figure class="

On Friday, June 16, the Journal of Supply Chain Management held a Paper Development Workshop (PDW) for empirical OSCM researchers in the Asia-Pacific region at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in Wuhan, China. Over 150 scholars and 15 panelists participated in the PDW, either online or in person. JSCM was represented by its Co-Editor-in-Chief Tingting Yan. In the morning, two hybrid panel discussions were held, one on How to Make Theoretical Contributions, with experts such as Christina Wong, Dayna Simpson, Hefu Liu, Kevin Dooley, Qinghua Zhu, and Sriram Narayanan, and the other on Writing Tips for Publishing in Top Empirical SCM Journals, with experts such as Chunping Deng, Di Fan, Jing Dai, Lujie Chen, Maggie Dong, Vikram Bhakoo, and Zhaohui Wu. In the afternoon, feedback sessions were held where senior experts provided oral feedback to the study authors. All 24 accepted research projects will also receive detailed written feedback from two senior experts after the PDW. The PDW was a great success in terms of providing not only general guidelines but also project-specific written/oral feedback to junior scholars who want to publish in top empirical SCM journals. JSCM would like to thank all panelists, participants, and the HUST administration and conference organizing team for their contribution to this great event.

Article Video

Video: Radical innovations as supply chain disruptions? The need for this research has become more urgent than ever as climate change and biodiversity loss accelerate. Over the past three decades, the supply chain literature has gradually expanded to examine synergies and trade-offs between economic, operational, and socio-ecological outcomes. However, limited insight has been provided on how to create an economically viable supply chain that has positive or regenerative impacts on social and environmental systems. In this special issue, researchers are called to rethink supply chains to integrate with nature respectfully and harmoniously. The principles, processes, and outcomes that characterize regenerative supply chains are not yet known, making this an essential area for academic research. Please see the attached document for details regarding the special issue. The authors show how adopting ANT allows a radical alternative conceptualization of the supply chain and of SCM itself, and discuss the methodological implications of adopting ANT for research in SCM. The authors demonstrate how ANT provides a complement to existing approaches to SCM theory development enabling new insights into: The dynamic and fragile character of supply chains, how people in SCM roles really act, the role of non-human actors in managing the supply chain and the emergence and unfolding of power in the supply chain. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jscm.12296
#supplychain #sociology

The analytical framework uses a review of previous studies using Bloomberg SPLC, FactSet Supply Chain Relationships, and Mergent Supply Chain, publicly available materials, interviews with information service providers, and the direct experience of the authors. The authors provide summary guidelines and encourage SCM researchers to incorporate methodological transparency when using these databases.
