On 20th March, Sr. Ilaisaane and six other seminarians from the Pacific Regional Seminary in Suva, Fiji, marked the completion of their course in Supervised Pastoral Education. The graduation celebration was presided over by His Grace, the Archbishop of Suva, the Most Rev. Peter Loy Chong, whose presence and guidance added great meaning to this special occasion.

It is with sadness that I share with you the news of Sr. Bette Carvelli (Sr. Mary Rosaire) who died peacefully on March 2, 2026 at Elizabeth Seton Residence, MA.

 Sr. Bette was born on June 30, 1926 in Roxbury, Massachusetts.

She was professed as a Marist Missionary Sister on February 2, 1954 in Bedford, MA.

Sr. Bette has been missioned in Fiji Islands, Chatham Islands, Tonga and Massachusetts.

It is with sadness that I share with you the news of Sr. Jhorna Gomes who died peacefully on February 28, 2026, at Care Dimensions Hospice, Lincoln, MA.

Sr. Jhorna Gomes was born on August 19, 1968 in Tuital, Bangladesh.

She was professed as a Marist Missionary Sister on May 22, 1998 in New Zealand.

Sister was missioned to the United States in 2000 where she both studied and worked as a CNA in Massachusetts.  She was missioned to Jamaica in 2005.  In 2019, Sr. Jhorna returned to the United States receiving the diagnosis of Stage IV lung cancer.  For the next 7 years, she accepted her physical journey with generosity and hope.

Through service, prayer, and gentle care,

Your light has shone everywhere."

It is with sadness that I share with you the news of Sr. Annemarie Woeste (Sr. Mary Gertruda) who died peacefully at 11:25 am on Friday, January 23, 2026, at Care Dimensions Hospice, Lincoln, MA.

Sr. Annemarie Woeste was born on October 16, 1937 in Neuborger, Germany.

She was professed as a Marist Missionary Sister on August 15, 1960 at Bedford, MA.

Sister was missioned to Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Vocation Ministry California and Massachusetts, Uganda, Africa, and Tanzania, East Africa.

Her wake and funeral arrangements will be shared at a future time.

May she rest in peace.

On 1st January 2026, the Sisters in the Massachusetts area gathered at the 62 Newton St. community around the Eucharistic table to give thanks to God for the dedicated service of Sr. Helen Muller and her team and to warmly welcome Sr. Palepa Ioane and her team as they begin their new ministry. It was a moment of gratitude, prayer, and fellowship, marking both an ending and a new beginning in the service of the Region.

It is with a heavy heart that I share the sad news of the passing of Sr. Mary Anne Faucher (Sr. M. Mark Lawrence), who peacefully departed this life on December 7, 2025, at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Massachusetts.

Sr. Mary Anne was born on June 7, 1941, in Brevard, North Carolina. She devoted her life to service and faith, being professed as a Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary on March 9, 1962, in Bedford, MA. Throughout her remarkable journey, she was missioned to various places, including Peru and Rwanda, Africa. She also served as a member of the General Council and ministered with the impactful program “WATCH,” which assisted senior citizens in securing affordable housing here in Massachusetts. The wake and funeral arrangements will be communicated at a later time. In the meantime, let us remember her contributions and the love she shared with all of us.

Sr. Malia Atonina Lafaele celebrated her 60th Jubilee on 8 December. There was a Eucharist celebration to mark this special day and a meal after. Some members of her families and friends from New Zealand and California traveled to witness with her on this great milestone

“John is his name,” is how we were introduced to our retreat director, the Bishop of Mandeville Diocese in Jamaica and Episcopal Administrator of Montego Bay Diocese, a down-to-earth person without dependence on title, or pretense. 

We were blessed with a week of enthusiastic, dynamic, even radical, Gospel preaching. This was not your run of the mill “nunny” retreat.  No soft voice with encouraging words on loss and grief and aging. No soft anything! It seems that as John sat and looked at the 23 of us Sisters, most over 80 with walkers and canes, a FIRE was lit within him and his message to us oldies boldly challenged us to be Disciples to the end, to be that missionary we vowed to be a half century or so ago.

The Beatitudes, as paradox and God’s vision for His world, was proclaimed within the context of scripture presenting us with (as 1 Sister commented, “meat to chew on”).  New perspective, deeper meanings and deeper calls, resonated in our hearts.

John’s homilies focused on God’s great love in the Eucharist; reminding us that it is the center of our lives.  Will we show up each day and plunge into life and love knowing that Jesus is our energy and our all. Will we be that Disciple filled with the Holy Spirit that leaves love in its wake? This is our desire at retreat’s end.

Sr. Ana was born on July 26, 1941 in Detroit, Michigan. She was professed as a Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary on March 8, 1964 at Waltham, Massachusetts. Sister was missioned to Peru where she taught at San Isidro School in Lima and her beloved Prison Ministry where she received the Human Rights Award for her Prison Work in San Juan de Lurigancho, Lima, Peru. On the Feast of St. Peter Chanel, 28th April, Sr. Ana passed away peacefully. May she rest in peace.

The four-day gathering of the diverse group of 12 smsm sisters comprising a total of 8 different nationalities took place in Lima Peru this February 2025. The nine smsm sisters missioned in Peru, were joined by the Regional administration, Srs Helen Muller, Mary Jane Kenney from Boston and Senitila Latu from Jamaica.   It was a time to share together the pastoral involvement of Margarita Tavara in her initiating her place in education in a girls school in Chulucanas as well as  Gladella Enanoria informing us of her establishing the Centre for “listening” in the Diocesan offices which is to attend those victims of abuse by Church personnel as well as actively preparing the public in the prevention of the abuse of the vulnerable.   From Huarmaca community in the mountain region of the Diocese of Chulucanas, Anna Berru spoke of her pastoral activities in the parish and rural areas, as well as Lita Manukula and Mary Eve Felesi, spoke of their full-time work in education in school.  The Lima community, Monica Mo’a (Regional Councilor) Beatriz Matos, Margaret Walsh involved in pastoral activity in the Marist Parish together with Carlota Calle who is full time ministry in the male prison, Castro Castro, welcomed the themes chosen for the assembly,  which reflected those of the universal Church, synodality, jubilee year which calls for ongoing openness to the Holy Spirit to guide us in conversion and  growth in our personal and community life having Christ as our Centre in the manner of Mary.

02 February – Sisters Annet Nakiwala and ‘Utu’one Vena made their first Profession of Vows at St. Luke’s Parish, Belmont. It was a joyful and beautiful celebration. Congratulations Sisters!

It is with joy that Sr. Jacinta Obiageri Obi, smsm made her First Vows in the United States of America. Sr. Jacinta is originally from Nigeria. In 2020, she began her formation as a postulant in Jamaica during the time of Pandemic. She then continued on to the Novitiate and was professed on 16th July, 2024.

Sr. Cristina Giustozzi, Congregational Leader was present and sent Jacinta to her first Mission Assignment in Burundi.

It was a joyful and wonderful celebration. Our sisters in the area were present to support Sr. Jacinta on this day.

All the best Sr. Jacinta and may you continue to be open to whatever God has for you through living your Vows as a Marist Missionary Sister.

We thank God and Mary for the gift of the vocation of our dear Sisters Patricia Phillips, Theresa Pastercykz and Anna Marzolo. Today, they celebrate 60 years of being Marist Missionary Sisters. We sing with you the Magnificat and be assured of our love and prayers.
