Zidane Iqbal, the Manchester-born midfielder who represents Iraq internationally, is expected to play at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after Iraq successfully secured qualification for the tournament.

The 23-year-old footballer was born to a Pakistani father from Sahiwal, Punjab, and an Iraqi mother. Despite being eligible for multiple national teams, Iqbal chose to represent Iraq at the international level and has become an important part of the country’s national squad.

Iqbal first gained widespread attention during his time at Manchester United, where he progressed through the club’s youth ranks. In 2021, he made history by becoming the first British South Asian player to feature for Manchester United’s senior team.

Since leaving Old Trafford, the midfielder has continued his professional career in Europe while strengthening his role within the Iraqi national team setup.

For football supporters in Pakistan, Iqbal’s participation in the World Cup carries special significance. While Pakistan remains absent from the tournament, his family roots in Punjab have created a sense of connection for many fans who are expected to follow his performances closely.

• Indonesia sent the largest national contingent for Hajj 2026 with around 221,000 pilgrims.
• The country remains the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation.
• Strong demand for Hajj continues despite long waiting periods in several regions.

Indonesia has once again recorded the world’s largest Hajj contingent, with approximately 221,000 pilgrims performing Hajj in 2026, reaffirming its position as the leading contributor to the annual Islamic pilgrimage.

The Southeast Asian nation, home to the world’s largest Muslim population, received the highest Hajj quota allocated by Saudi Arabia for the 2026 pilgrimage season. The large number reflects both Indonesia’s population size and the deep religious significance of Hajj for millions of Muslims across the country.

Every year, Indonesian Muslims register in large numbers for the pilgrimage, resulting in lengthy waiting periods that can extend for many years in some provinces. Despite these challenges, demand for Hajj remains exceptionally strong, with thousands of prospective pilgrims joining waiting lists annually in the hope of fulfilling one of Islam’s five pillars.

Saudi Arabia allocates Hajj quotas to countries based largely on their Muslim population. As a result, Indonesia consistently receives one of the largest allocations worldwide and regularly sends the biggest national delegation to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah.

Indonesian authorities coordinated a massive logistical operation for the 2026 Hajj season, involving transportation, accommodation, healthcare services, and religious guidance for pilgrims travelling from different regions of the vast archipelago.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and US President Donald Trump have both called for restraint amid renewed tensions between Israel and Iran, warning that further military escalation could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts and destabilize the wider Middle East.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep concern over the latest exchange of attacks between the two regional rivals, saying the violence serves as a reminder of how fragile the current ceasefire environment remains. In a message shared on X, he cautioned that the consequences of a broader conflict could become “intolerable” not only for the region but for the entire world.

The recent surge in violence in the Middle East is a stark reminder of the dangers associated with a tenuous ceasefire and the unbearable consequences it may lead to.

The prime minister urged all parties involved to exercise patience, tolerance and restraint, emphasizing that a peaceful and just resolution remains achievable. He said that a “just solution” appears within reach and warned that any new escalation could derail the diplomatic progress made so far.

Sharif also highlighted Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic engagement, stating that Islamabad is working closely with “brotherly countries and partners” to support efforts aimed at securing lasting peace. He appealed to all sides to abandon violence and pursue dialogue, expressing confidence that diplomatic initiatives still carry “bright prospects of success.”

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump also sought to calm tensions following Iran’s recent missile attacks, revealing that he had urged Israel to avoid a retaliatory response. Trump said Washington remains “very close” to reaching a final agreement with Tehran and does not want the latest developments to derail negotiations.

According to Trump, another Israeli military response could prolong the conflict and keep the region trapped in a cycle of retaliation. Speaking about the situation, he said Iran had already launched missiles and that “that’s enough,” urging Tehran to return to negotiations and finalize a diplomatic agreement.

Trump said he hoped Israel would avoid further strikes and claimed that no casualties had been reported from the recent Iranian missile attacks. He stressed that diplomacy should be given a chance before another military confrontation takes place.

A senior US official said the Trump administration had not provided Israel with a “green light” for its earlier strike in Beirut. The official added that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu initially resisted calls for restraint but later appeared willing to step back from immediate retaliation.

Trump also made clear that US policy regarding Iran would be determined in Washington. Referring to Netanyahu, he stated: “He won’t have any choice” but to accept any agreement secured by the United States.

“I call the shots. I call all the shots. He doesn’t call the shots,” Trump said.

The latest tensions were triggered after Israel carried out strikes in Beirut’s southern suburbs, prompting Iran to launch what its Revolutionary Guard Corps described as a warning missile attack. Tehran also warned that any future aggression could result in broader military action.

The Iranian strike marked the first direct attack on Israel since a ceasefire reached in April had largely halted major hostilities involving Iran, Israel and the United States. Trump openly criticized Israel’s Beirut operation, saying he was “not happy about it” and warning that both the Israeli strike and Iran’s response risk damaging efforts to transform the ceasefire into a broader political settlement.

Despite the escalation, Trump insisted that negotiations remain alive. In an interview, he said a deal with Iran could have been finalized earlier in the week before the latest exchange of attacks.

“I would say an agreement would be signed on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday of this coming week. And now this takes place,” Trump said.

He again called on Tehran to “get back to the table and make a deal,” while reiterating that any future agreement must permanently prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

“They cannot have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said, adding that even a one percent possibility of Iran acquiring one would be unacceptable.

While emphasizing his preference for diplomacy, Trump also warned that military options remain available if negotiations fail.

“Either I’m going to do it through negotiation — where we’re very close to a deal — or I’m going to blow the hell out of them,” he said.

The US president stated that American forces would remain deployed in the region while talks continue and confirmed that sanctions relief would only be considered after Iran fulfills its commitments under a future agreement.

Trump also revealed that Washington is working with members of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to seek further information regarding Iran’s nuclear facilities and enriched uranium stockpiles. However, analysts have warned that increased international pressure could complicate negotiations, as Tehran has previously responded to such measures by reducing cooperation with inspectors.

The return of Pakistani pilgrims from Saudi Arabia is continuing smoothly following the completion of Hajj, with more than 34,000 pilgrims already arriving back in Pakistan under the ongoing post-Hajj flight operation.

According to official details, approximately 84,791 Pakistani pilgrims remain in Saudi Arabia and are expected to return in phases over the coming weeks. The repatriation operation is scheduled to continue until June 30.

Authorities have put special arrangements in place to ensure a smooth departure process for pilgrims and to minimize congestion at airports. As part of these measures, luggage check-in facilities are being provided directly at pilgrims’ accommodation sites, allowing baggage to be processed before they reach the airport.

Officials have advised pilgrims to prepare their luggage according to the announced schedules, as baggage processing is being carried out 24 to 48 hours before departure flights.

Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Muhammad Yousaf is also expected to return to Pakistan today after overseeing Hajj-related responsibilities in Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, around 250 members of the Hajj support staff have already completed their duties and returned home.

In Madinah, post-Hajj arrangements have enabled thousands of pilgrims to visit Riyaz-ul-Jannah. Officials said more than 15,000 Pakistani pilgrims have so far been given the opportunity to offer prayers at the revered site.

The government says the phased return operation is progressing according to schedule, with flights continuing throughout June to bring the remaining pilgrims back to Pakistan safely and efficiently.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly considering a significant restructuring of the national team’s management setup, with several former Pakistan captains expected to be entrusted with key positions as part of the proposed changes.

According to sources, the PCB is exploring ways to strengthen the national team’s performance and long-term planning by bringing experienced former players into influential roles. The move is being viewed as part of a broader effort to reshape Pakistan cricket’s management and decision-making structure ahead of important international assignments.

Among the names under consideration is former Pakistan captain Younis Khan, one of the country’s most successful Test cricketers. Sources said Younis is being strongly considered for the position of head coach of Pakistan’s Test team. In addition to the coaching role, he may also be included in the national selection committee, giving him a direct role in shaping the future of Pakistan’s red-ball cricket.

Younis Khan is widely regarded as one of Pakistan’s greatest Test batsmen. He remains the country’s highest run-scorer in Test cricket and has previously worked with the national team in coaching and mentoring capacities. His extensive experience in the longest format is believed to be a major factor behind the PCB’s interest in assigning him a more prominent role.

Former captain and all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez is also expected to receive an important position within the board’s structure. Sources indicated that Hafeez is likely to be appointed as the PCB’s Director of International Cricket, a role that would involve overseeing various aspects of Pakistan’s international cricket operations.

In addition to the administrative position, Hafeez may also be given responsibilities within the national selection committee. Such a move would place him among the key figures involved in player evaluation, squad selection and strategic planning for the national teams.

The reported restructuring could also bring significant changes to Pakistan’s Test team leadership. Sources suggested that current Test captain Shan Masood and Test team coach Sarfaraz Ahmed may be removed from their respective positions as part of the proposed overhaul.

Shan Masood has led Pakistan in the Test format during a challenging period, while Sarfaraz Ahmed has been associated with the coaching setup after previously captaining Pakistan to major international success, including the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy triumph.

Despite the expected changes, Sarfaraz Ahmed is likely to remain associated with the PCB. Sources said he is expected to continue working with the Pakistan Shaheens setup, where he could focus on the development of emerging cricketers and strengthening the country’s talent pipeline.

The possible appointments of Younis Khan and Mohammad Hafeez reflect a growing trend of involving former international players in decision-making and management roles. PCB officials believe that the experience and cricketing knowledge of former captains can help improve team performance, strengthen player development and bring greater stability to the national cricket structure.

However, the PCB has not yet issued any official statement regarding the reported appointments, leadership changes or restructuring plans. Any decisions regarding coaching positions, team captaincy and management roles are expected to be announced formally after internal consultations and approval from the board.

Pakistan has stepped up its diplomatic efforts to promote peace and stability in the Middle East, with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi departing for Tehran on a high-profile visit aimed at supporting ongoing efforts to reduce tensions between Iran and the United States.

Pakistani Interior Minister was welcomed by Iran’s interior Minister and Pakistan’s ambassador to Iran.

Mohsin Naqvi is reportedly carrying a message from Army Chief Asim Munir to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtba Khamenei during his visit to Tehran. https://t.co/1DpxXZ13Os pic.twitter.com/SDGemAc4sb
— Iran's Today (@Iran) June 6, 2026

The visit comes at a sensitive time for the region and follows Naqvi’s return from Kyrgyzstan, where he participated in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Interior Ministers’ Meeting and held a series of bilateral engagements with regional leaders.

According to reports, Naqvi met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif upon his return to Pakistan and received special instructions regarding the evolving Iran-US negotiations. The interior minister is carrying a special message from Field Marshal Asim Munir for Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, a development being viewed as part of Pakistan’s broader diplomatic outreach aimed at encouraging dialogue and de-escalation.

Diplomatic sources describe the message and the timing of the visit as highly significant, with expectations that it could contribute to ongoing efforts to improve communication between Tehran and Washington. Pakistani officials have consistently advocated political dialogue and peaceful solutions to regional disputes, and Naqvi’s visit is being seen as an extension of that policy.

According to Iranian media reports, Naqvi is expected to meet Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during his stay in Tehran. Discussions are likely to focus on the regional security environment, diplomatic engagement, and possible avenues for reducing tensions in the Middle East.

This is not Naqvi’s first recent engagement with Iran. Sources said he had previously travelled to Tehran on May 18 and May 20, where he held important meetings with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Araghchi. Those meetings were focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and discussing regional developments.

Before heading to Tehran, Naqvi completed an intensive round of diplomacy in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. During the SCO Interior Ministers’ Meeting, he held separate meetings with the interior ministers of Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, focusing on security cooperation, counter-narcotics efforts, illegal immigration, and regional stability.

One of the most notable meetings took place with Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev. During the talks, Pakistan and Russia agreed to strengthen cooperation against illegal immigration and improve coordination for the repatriation of citizens residing unlawfully in each other’s countries. The two sides also discussed expanding collaboration to curb drug trafficking and transnational criminal networks.

Naqvi’s discussions with Tajik Interior Minister Ramazan Rahimzadeh focused heavily on security concerns originating from Afghanistan. Both ministers expressed concern over the presence of terrorist groups and drug production networks in Afghanistan, describing them as a threat to regional peace and security.

Officials from Pakistan and Tajikistan noted that around 25 different terrorist organisations are currently active in Afghanistan, emphasizing the need for greater regional coordination to counter terrorism and extremism.

In a separate meeting with Uzbekistan’s Interior Minister Major General Aziz Tashpulatov, both sides agreed to enhance cooperation between law enforcement agencies and expand opportunities for joint training programmes. A decision was also taken to establish a working group to facilitate closer coordination between the two interior ministries.

Naqvi also met Kyrgyz Interior Minister Niyazbekov Ulan Omokanovich, where both countries agreed to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest. During the meeting, Naqvi congratulated Kyrgyzstan on its election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and thanked the Kyrgyz government for hosting the SCO gathering.

His meeting with Kazakhstan’s Interior Minister Yerzhan Sadenov likewise focused on preventing illegal immigration and strengthening institutional cooperation. The two sides agreed to establish a dedicated working group to further expand collaboration between their ministries.

The series of meetings in Bishkek highlighted Pakistan’s growing emphasis on regional diplomacy and security cooperation. Officials say Islamabad is pursuing a multi-pronged approach that combines diplomatic engagement, counterterrorism cooperation, anti-narcotics efforts and migration management to address common regional challenges.

The federal government has announced a reduction in the price of petrol by Rs4 per litre while keeping the price of High-Speed Diesel (HSD) unchanged for the next fortnight.

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Energy’s Petroleum Division, the revised fuel prices will come into effect from June 6, 2026.

Under the new pricing structure, the ex-depot price of petrol (Motor Spirit) has been reduced from Rs381.78 per litre to Rs377.78 per litre, providing some relief to motorists across the country.

However, the government has decided to maintain the price of High-Speed Diesel at Rs380.78 per litre. Diesel is widely used in the transport, agriculture and industrial sectors, making its price a key factor in overall inflation and logistics costs.

The latest reduction follows fluctuations in international petroleum markets and changes in import costs during the pricing review period. Petrol is primarily consumed by private vehicles, motorcycles and small transport operators, meaning the decrease is expected to benefit millions of consumers.

While the cut offers short-term relief, energy analysts caution that global oil markets remain highly sensitive to geopolitical developments, particularly tensions involving Iran and the United States in the Middle East.

Any escalation involving Iran could affect crude oil supplies from the Gulf region and place upward pressure on international oil prices. Since Pakistan imports a significant portion of its petroleum requirements, a sustained rise in global crude prices could quickly reverse recent declines in domestic fuel prices.

Market observers note that despite recent volatility, Pakistan has so far benefited from relatively stable international oil prices and a steady exchange rate, helping the government pass on some relief to consumers.

The decision to keep diesel prices unchanged is also being viewed as an attempt to avoid additional pressure on transportation costs and food prices, as diesel plays a critical role in moving goods across the country and powering agricultural machinery.

Also See: Petro Price in Pakistan Today

Economists say the fuel price adjustment is positive for consumers and may provide limited relief to inflation. However, future pricing decisions will largely depend on global crude oil trends, exchange rate movements and developments in the Middle East, which continue to be closely monitored by energy markets worldwide.

Pakistan’s security forces have killed six terrorists during an intelligence-based operation in Panjgur district of Balochistan, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Friday.

According to the military’s media wing, the operation was conducted after receiving intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists associated with Fitna al Hindustan, a group described by Pakistan as an Indian-backed proxy organization.

The ISPR said security forces effectively engaged multiple terrorist hideouts during the operation. Following intense exchanges of fire, six militants were killed.

A cache of weapons, ammunition, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and a vehicle was also recovered from the slain militants. According to the military, the terrorists had been actively involved in various terrorist activities in the area.

The military said sanitization operations are continuing in the region to ensure that any remaining militants are located and eliminated.

Reaffirming its commitment to counterterrorism efforts, the ISPR stated that Pakistan’s security forces and law enforcement agencies would continue their operations under the national counterterrorism strategy “Azm-e-Istehkam” to eliminate the threat of foreign-sponsored terrorism from the country.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has praised the security forces for conducting a successful operation against militants identified by the government as Fitna al-Hindustan in the Panjgur area of Balochistan. In a statement issued on Friday, he commended the bravery and professionalism of the security personnel for eliminating six militants during the intelligence-based operation.

Naqvi said the timely action by security forces foiled the plans of what he described as Indian-sponsored terrorists and highlighted the importance of ongoing counterterrorism operations in Balochistan. Reaffirming support for the armed forces, he said the entire nation stands united with security institutions in the fight against terrorism and remains committed to ensuring peace and stability across the country.

President, PM commend security forces for successful operation against terrorists in Panjgur

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday also praised the security forces for successfully conducting an operation in Panjgur that resulted in the killing of six militants linked to Fitna-al-Hindustan. In separate statements, both leaders commended the forces for their efforts and said that counterterrorism operations under Operation Azm-e-Istehkam would continue until their objectives were fully achieved.

President Zardari reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to eliminating terrorism, saying that Fitna-al-Hindustan and its facilitators would not be allowed to disrupt the country’s peace and stability. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the militants were planning attacks against innocent Pakistani citizens and lauded the security forces for thwarting their intentions. He also reiterated the government’s resolve to eradicate terrorism and ensure lasting peace and security across the country.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has reiterated his party’s commitment to securing greater rights and development opportunities for the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, promising employment for youth and accelerated progress in the region after June 7.

Addressing a public gathering in Gilgit as part of the election campaign, Bilawal said the PPP had been fighting for the rights of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan for three generations. He stated that the party remained committed to ensuring the region receives its rightful share of governance and development.

Bilawal described Gilgit-Baltistan as a region blessed with abundant natural resources and said the PPP would focus on creating employment opportunities for young people. He assured supporters that merit-based jobs and development initiatives would be among the party’s priorities.

Recalling his previous election campaign in the region, Bilawal said the PPP had presented its manifesto in every constituency and received significant public support. He alleged that the party’s mandate had been taken away in the last election and urged voters to protect their vote and ensure transparency in the electoral process this time.

"In 2008, President Asif Ali Zardari gave Gilgit-Baltistan its identity and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa its name."

— Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari at the Shahi Polo Ground, Gilgit.#GBMainTeerChaleyGa @BBhuttoZardari pic.twitter.com/868X4xm2Bp
— Abdul Majid Kalwar (@Majid_PSF) June 5, 2026

He noted that he had returned to Gilgit-Baltistan alongside Aseefa Bhutto Zardari to seek public support and strengthen the party’s position ahead of the elections.

The PPP chairman also spoke about regional and international challenges facing the Muslim world, including the situations in Iran, Lebanon and Gaza. He called on voters to consider which political party was best positioned to address the country’s current challenges and safeguard national interests.

Bilawal credited the Bhutto family with major contributions to Pakistan’s national security. He said PPP founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto laid the foundation of Pakistan’s nuclear programme, while former prime minister Benazir Bhutto played a role in advancing missile technology. He also praised former president Asif Ali Zardari for decisions related to foreign policy and regional initiatives.

Highlighting the constitutional framework, Bilawal said the PPP would work through the 18th Constitutional Amendment to secure greater rights and empowerment for the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.

He further stressed the importance of public-private partnerships in driving economic growth and development projects in the region. Referring to the area’s hydropower resources, Bilawal claimed Gilgit-Baltistan has the potential to generate up to 50,000 megawatts of electricity and described the region as a hidden economic treasure for Pakistan.

Concluding his address, he pledged renewed development efforts, improved opportunities for young people and continued struggle for the rights of Gilgit-Baltistan under a future PPP-led agenda.

Two officials of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) have been dismissed from service over their alleged links with notorious drug dealer Anmol alias Pinky in Karachi.

The dismissed officials have been identified as Constable Ali Qureshi and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Kafeel. According to CTD sources, both officials were found to have maintained contacts with Pinky over the past several years.

Sources said ASI Kafeel Awan had arrested one of Pinky’s motorcycle riders a few years ago. Following that arrest, his alleged contacts with the suspected drug dealer reportedly increased.

The action was taken after the completion of an inquiry into the allegations against the two officials. Authorities reviewed evidence and finalized the investigation report before ordering their dismissal.

The plan is to transform the area into a modern commercial and maritime hub that could become one of the largest waterfront developments in the region.

The project is expected to feature modern commercial infrastructure designed to attract local and foreign investment, create new employment opportunities, and contribute to Karachi’s urban development.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Chaudhry described the initiative as a strategic opportunity to unlock the potential of KPT’s waterfront assets and strengthen Pakistan’s position as a regional center for maritime trade and investment.

He emphasized that all legal and regulatory requirements under Pakistani law would be fulfilled before the project moves forward.

During the visit, members of the Saudi delegation also expressed interest in expanding cooperation in Pakistan’s maritime sector, including possible participation in port infrastructure and related development projects.

The minister said the initiative reflects broader efforts by Pakistan and Saudi Arabia to deepen economic cooperation and explore new opportunities in ports, logistics, infrastructure, and trade facilitation.

The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) has recommended the dismissal of two of its officials from service after an inquiry into their alleged links with notorious drug trafficker Anmol alias Pinky.

According to CTD sources, Constable Ali Qureshi and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Kafeel Awan were found to have maintained contacts with Pinky over a period of several years. The recommendation was made after the completion of an internal investigation into the matter.

Sources said that Kafeel Awan had previously arrested one of the motorcycle riders associated with Pinky’s alleged drug network a few years ago. Following that arrest, investigators believe his contacts with the suspected drug queen increased.

The inquiry report against both officials has now been finalized and forwarded for further action. Last month, Ali Qureshi and Kafeel Awan were taken into custody as part of the investigation, and their statements were formally recorded by authorities.

CTD officials said forensic examinations of the mobile phones used by both officers were carried out to gather evidence. Investigators also obtained and reviewed details of their bank accounts as part of the probe into the alleged connections.

The case is part of the wider investigation into Anmol alias Pinky and her alleged drug trafficking network, which has remained under scrutiny by law enforcement agencies in recent months.

He recalled Prince Mansour’s previous visit to Pakistan in October 2025 and expressed hope that the current visit would help advance discussions between the two sides and lead to the signing of memorandums of understanding (MoUs) and agreements in various sectors.

The prime minister also conveyed his regards to Saudi Arabia’s Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved a reduction of Rs1.99 per unit in electricity tariffs under the quarterly adjustment mechanism, offering significant relief to consumers across Pakistan for the next three months.

According to the regulator’s decision, the tariff reduction relates to the quarterly adjustment for the January–March 2026 period. Nepra has forwarded the decision to the federal government for formal notification and implementation.

Once notified, the reduction will remain effective from June to August 2026 and is expected to provide cumulative relief of approximately Rs67.17 billion to eligible electricity consumers nationwide.

The quarterly adjustment mechanism is used to account for changes in power sector costs and revenues, allowing consumers to benefit from lower-than-projected expenses or absorb additional costs when necessary.

However, the relief comes alongside a separate increase in electricity tariffs approved by Nepra under the monthly fuel cost adjustment mechanism.

The regulator has approved a Rs1.19 per unit increase for April 2026 fuel cost variations. According to an official notification, the additional charge will apply to electricity consumers across the country, including those served by Karachi’s power utility, and will be reflected in electricity bills issued in June 2026.

Earlier, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) had requested a higher increase of Rs1.73 per unit under the April fuel cost adjustment. After reviewing the proposal, Nepra approved a lower increase of Rs1.19 per unit.

Officials explained that monthly fuel cost adjustments are designed to reflect fluctuations in international fuel prices and electricity generation costs, while quarterly adjustments account for broader financial changes in the power sector.

With the Rs1.99 per unit quarterly reduction outweighing the Rs1.19 per unit monthly increase, consumers are expected to receive overall relief in their electricity bills once the federal government formally notifies the quarterly adjustment decision.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Shafi Jan announced on Thursday that the provincial government and its allies will stage a protest outside the National Assembly on June 10, the day the federal budget is scheduled to be presented.

Speaking on Geo News programme “Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath,” Jan said the demonstration is being organized to protest what he described as discriminatory treatment of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government in the upcoming federal budget.

According to the minister, the decision was announced by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi while concluding a recent sit-in outside Adiala Jail. He said the provincial leadership had collectively decided to hold the protest in Islamabad to highlight concerns regarding the province’s share and treatment in federal financial matters.

Jan said all party lawmakers would participate in the demonstration, including members of the National Assembly and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly. He added that the protest would serve as a united expression of opposition to what the provincial government considers unfair budgetary treatment.

Referring to the National Finance Commission (NFC) issue, the minister said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had already presented its position before the federal government in a logical and constructive manner, but concerns remained unresolved.

Rejecting suggestions that Chief Minister Sohail Afridi was under pressure or frustrated, Jan said the chief minister remained confident and fully comfortable in his role. He added that Afridi continues to maintain regular contact with senior PTI leaders, including Asad Qaiser, Junaid Akbar and Atif Khan.

Commenting on PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram, Jan urged him to exercise caution while making public statements. He said party leaders should avoid remarks that could create internal difficulties and stressed the need for greater responsibility in public communication.

The information minister also called on Sheikh Waqas Akram to play a more active role in leading the party and fulfilling his responsibilities as a member of the National Assembly.

The federal government is scheduled to present the budget for the upcoming fiscal year on June 10, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa set to use the occasion to press its demands regarding provincial rights and financial allocations.
