Members of Cambrian College’s Golden Shield varsity athletics program have been honoured with four nominations for the annual House of Kin Sports Awards.

The 2015-16 varsity season was a very successful one for each of the nominees, who produced outstanding individual and team results. The nominees and their categories include:

Emily Marcolini: Amateur Female Athlete of the Year (Cross-country running)
Evan Phillips: Amateur Import Athlete (Soccer)
Giuseppe Politi: Joe Drago Coach of the Year (Soccer)
Men’s and Women’s Soccer: Sheridan Family Team of the Year

Cross-country runner Emily Marcolini captured the spotlight and earned two medals in the fall of 2015, winning gold at the Ontario cross-country championships and bronze at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association championships. Goalkeeper Evan Phillips is credited with being the “backbone” of the Cambrian men’s soccer squad. He was named Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Top East Division Goalkeeper, Championship All-star and League All-star in 2015. Phillips and Marcolini were also recognized by Cambrian in March, winning Male and Female Athlete of the Year at the College’s Athletics Banquet.

Both the women’s and men’s soccer teams have a lot to be proud of, and their Head Coach, Giuseppe Politi, does too. Bringing the teams to the 2015 provincial championships, Politi is nominated for the Joe Drago Coach of the Year Award. As defending bronze medal champions, the women’s team put up a strong fight, but just missed the podium, earning fourth place. The men also made it to the final four, and earned fourth place, which is the highest finish in the history of the men’s team. The men’s and women’s teams have been jointly nominated to win the Sheridan Family Team of the Year award.
The winners of each category will be announced at the 48th Annual Sudbury House of Kin Sports Celebrity Dinner and Awards, which takes place on June 8 at the Caruso Club. The event celebrates achievements of local athletes and coaches who are involved in sports from the amateur to elite level.

Text Content:

SUDBURY — More than 80 Grade 6, 7 and 8 students from Sudbury-area schools will unite to explore, discover and compete at the Let’s Talk Science Challenge on Thursday, May 12. The event is hosted at Cambrian College by Let’s Talk Science, an award-winning national charitable youth development organization.

The Let’s Talk Science Challenge is a fun, team-based competitive event that ignites students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and invites them to develop and apply their knowledge, teamwork, leadership, critical thinking and problem-solving skills in a fun learning experience. With more than 70 percent of Canadian jobs demanding STEM knowledge or expertise by the time these students graduate, Let’s Talk Science is helping to prepare youth to live and work in an increasingly scientific world through this event and its other innovative education programs.

The Let’s Talk Science Challenge features special presentations, a quiz-show component and a hands-on engineering design challenge that many students have been preparing for since January. Let’s Talk Science organizes and runs the event with student volunteers, as well as faculty and staff at Cambrian College, as part of its national Let’s Talk Science Outreach program.

Cambrian College is one of 23 colleges and universities across Canada hosting the Let’s Talk Science Challenge in April and May. This year, more than 3,200 students will participate in the Let’s Talk Science Challenge coast to coast.

Through its free programs, Let’s Talk Science supports science literacy by engaging students in STEM from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Let’s Talk Science expressed its thanks to CH2M, The Government of Canada, Honda Canada Foundation, Shaw (media partner), The Trottier Family Foundation, 3M Canada, The Government of Ontario and HSBC Bank Canada for making the 2016 Let’s Talk Science Challenge possible!

SUDBURY— Cambrian College students have once again distinguished themselves and their outstanding skills, earning three gold medals and special recognition at the Ontario Technological Skills Competition (OTSC). The competition is the largest of its kind in Canada, with more than 2,000 postsecondary competitors in 67 categories. Cambrian students delivered exceptional results, earning gold medals in three categories.

The gold medal winners, and their respective categories, are:
Eric Boudreau: Heavy Duty Equipment Service
Bailey Bowman: Heating Systems Technican
Benoit Lambert: IT Network Systems Administration

Boudreau and Lambert will advance to the Skills/Compétences Canada 2016 National Competition in Moncton, New Brunswick, which takes place June 5-8. The national competition does not include events in Bowman’s category, but with his gold medal, he was offered an apprenticeship with Hy-Mark Canada. Lambert was also recognized as a Top Competitor in the Technology Sector.

In congratulating the medal winners, competitors, and coaches, Cambrian College President Bill Best said:

“Every effort and every win at the Ontario Technological Skills Competition means a lot to the students, and to Cambrian, because success doesn’t happen overnight. These results are possible because of strong programs and faculty coaches, hours of preparation, and hundreds of micro-decisions made by our students both in training and in competition.

Our student competitors and thousands of students at Cambrian challenge themselves every day to be the best they can be. And when they graduate, they will move on to valued and meaningful careers that play a vital role in building strong and vibrant communities.”

In the past six years, Cambrian College students have earned 29 medals at provincial and national Skills Competitions. In 2016, Cambrian was the only northeastern Ontario college whose students earned OTSC medals, reinforcing the College’s winning tradition.

This year, Cambrian sent its largest contingent of competitors, registering 19 students from a range of programs, including:

Network Technician

Powerline Technician

Graphic Design

Welding and Fabrication

Heavy Duty Equipment

Motive Power Technician (Automotive)

Electrical Engineering Technician

Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)

Industrial Mechanic (Millwright)

Cambrian College would like to thank all of the competitors, coaches, and organizers involved with this event for their drive and dedication.

SUDBURY – One of northern Ontario’s busiest airports is benefiting from an exciting injection of art, thanks to a dedicated group of students, faculty and alumni from Cambrian College’s School of Creative Arts and Design.

On Thursday, April 28, a 47 foot by 5 foot mural was unveiled in the Greater Sudbury Airport’s baggage screening area, enhancing the space with vibrant colours and positive energy.

“The mural adds a new element to the Airport’s atmosphere,” said Terra Glabb, Business Development Director at the Greater Sudbury Airport. “The art brings an energizing, dynamic feel that our and travelers will remember and appreciate. This mural will have an impact for years to come, thanks to its creators,” Glabb continued.

“Our design is inspired by the emotional and physical experience of flight,” explained project coordinator Johanna Westby, a professor in Cambrian College’s School of Creative Arts and Design. “Working on the piece, we used vibrant colours and typography to evoke feelings associated with the experience of travel, new horizons and connections,” she added.

The mural was created by Graphic Design students Angel Charette, Maggie Hobbs, Bianca Lefevbre, Lindsay Levesque, Danielle Provencher, and Manon Roussel; Graphic Design graduate Joelle Beaulieu; Design and Visual Arts students Darlene Benoit, Curtis Brownell, and Sarah Woodcock; and faculty members Chantal Abdel-Nour and Johanna Westby. In all, the group spent 195 hours painting the panels, which were donated by Home Depot. The students raised funds for the paint and volunteered their time to complete the project.

The Airport mural is the fifth philanthropic mural installation completed by Cambrian students, faculty and alumni. Their other projects have benefitted the Sudbury YMCA, Science North, Health Sciences North, and Cambrian College. The group seeks out locations for their murals that will be highly visible and will positively benefit the community.

April 25, 2016 – Sudbury

A website and publicity campaign were officially launched today to promote awareness of the Ontario college system’s upcoming 50th anniversary in 2017.

The campaign, called The Start of Something Amazing, will encourage reflection on the college system’s tremendous legacy and will look ahead to the next 50 years. Students, faculty, alumni, and communities throughout the province will be part of the celebration that begins in September 2016 and runs through to the end of 2017.

In addition to the new website, the campaign will include an online yearbook and videos, a province-wide bus tour, guest lecturer events that will be available online, a scholarship program for new students, special community events, and much more. Cambrian College and Collège Boréal will be organizing local events as well as participating in system-wide activities.

When the Ontario college system was first incepted in the late 1960s, Ontario’s colleges were training approximately 20,000 full-time students per year. Today, enrolment is at an all-time high with 500,000 full-time and part-time students.

Today’s colleges offer about 900 programs that prepare students for a vast range of fields, including: business and marketing; community and social services; art and design; engineering; information technology; law and justice; health sciences; and the skilled trades. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) maintains that access to college education has made Canada a world leader in post-secondary attainment rates.

Quotes

“The Ontario college system fuels the engine that drives economies across Ontario, our country, and around the world. As we approach our 50th year as a system, we will celebrate the achievements of our 2 million graduates and focus our collective energies on the innovations and achievements that will define our future.”
Bill Best, President, Cambrian College

“Collège Boréal may be the youngest college in the province, it is nonetheless proud to join in celebrating 50 years of excellence and innovation in Ontario’s colleges. We look forward to working with these institutions in the future so that together, we can continue to prepare the highly skilled workforce this province’s citizens deserve. ”
Pierre Riopel, President, Collège Boréal

“This is a significant occasion that celebrates just how much college education has evolved and become pivotal to Ontario’s success. As a system, we’re starting the work to promote awareness of all the activities planned for this milestone anniversary.”
Don Lovisa, President of Durham College and Chair of the College Sector Task Force planning provincewide activities

“The coming year promises to be a banner one for Ontario’s colleges. We’re excited about this chance to mark our legacy and to engage everyone in a discussion about the future of college education.”
Linda Franklin, President and CEO of Colleges Ontario

Text Content:

SUDBURY— Cambrian College is taking a step away from provincial varsity competition in men’s basketball for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons. The College has advised its varsity staff and players, as well as the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA), of its decision to suspend the program.

“With the loss of basketball coach Luc Giroux for personal reasons, Cambrian considered its options with respect to the quickly approaching season and the difficulties it would face in putting together a successful team,” said Alison De Luisa, Associate Vice President, Student and Employee Development. “In making this decision, Cambrian is taking this opportunity to re-evaluate the men’s basketball program and our ability to build a successful team in the future.”

Cambrian College and the Cambrian College Athletics Association would like to recognize Coach Giroux and all of the men’s basketball players for their dedication to the program over the past season. “Our head coach, players, staff, and volunteers have demonstrated determination despite strong challenges,” said De Luisa. “We are proud of how hard everyone in the program has worked and hope that everyone understands this was not an easy decision, nor a choice that was made lightly.”

The women’s varsity basketball team will not be affected and will continue to compete in the intercollegiate basketball program.

QUICK FACTS:

The College has advised the OCAA that Cambrian would not be hosting a team for the upcoming season, and under the OCAA regulations, the College will not be permitted to host a team for 2 seasons (until the 2018-19 season).

For the upcoming season, Cambrian will compete in the OCAA in seven sports: women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross-country running, and men’s and women’s volleyball.

Members of Cambrian’s men’s basketball team have the opportunity to try out for other varsity teams that represent Cambrian in the OCAA.

“We are proud of our graduates for earning this endorsement from employers across all industries,” said Cambrian College President Bill Best. “We’d like to thank all of the employers for hiring our grads, for contributing to the success of our programs, and for partnering to ensure a powerful economic presence as key suppliers of a job-ready work force.”

Best also recognized faculty and staff, who he said, are “tremendously focused on all aspects of career preparation. They teach and mentor students so that they graduate with the right mix of skills, experience and knowledge and are ready to make a positive contribution to global workplaces.”

Every program at Cambrian benefits from valuable input from employers and guidance from industry-experienced faculty who ensure that graduates have the required skills to meet professional expectations.

Sudbury MPP Glenn Thibeault also applauded Cambrian’s success, saying: “When employers express high levels of satisfaction with Cambrian College graduates, it proves that investment in college education provides great value to our economy. Employers both large and small benefit from access to a highly-skilled workforce, and it’s clear that Cambrian graduates are very effective in filling that need. Our government’s first priority is to grow the economy and create jobs, and Cambrian plays a key role in achieving that goal by connecting employers with graduates who are making valuable contributions across all sectors of our economy.”

In the 2014-15 KPI survey, Cambrian College scored above the provincial average in each of the following categories:

Employer satisfaction – 100%

Text Content:

Cambrian Golden Shield women's basketball team took a huge step towards a championship roster on April 13, adding a pair of accomplished athletes to the team for the 2015-16 varsity basketball season. Last year’s lineup was heavy on character and work ethic, but light on club basketball experience, so with the signing of Huntsville native Merissa Moore and local product Megan Desormeaux, head coach Nambogga Sewali will help fill the experience void.

At 5'9", Moore is approaching her role with the team with an open mind, providing some helpful flexibility to Sewali and company. "I think that I am versatile, and will try and help out wherever the coach thinks I can help the team," said Moore.

"I'm tall enough to go inside and help out rebounding, but I'm a pretty good shooter too." A member of the WOSSA champion Mother Theresa Spartans "AA" team from London, Moore is excited about the chance to make a contribution out of the gate at Cambrian.

"Not all rookies coming out of high school get a chance to step in and play," she said. "I want to help our team get better." Coming off an 0-18 season, the question is perhaps more just how much can the Shield improve based on their new additions, rather than "if" they will improve.

"Realistically, I think we can compete next year," said Desormeaux, a soon-to-be graduate of École Secondaire Macdonald-Cartier. "Even if that means we don't win, it's going to be a ten point game, and it's going to be a battle the whole way through."

"They're going to know that Cambrian College has got something, and is not going to go away." Developed under tutelage of her father (John), Desormeaux is very much looking forward to the very different voice that Sewali brings to the mix as her new coach.

"I like that she shows you that she cares about you, that she's going to be on your butt the whole time," said the talented shooting guard. "She treats you like you are her main priority."

Getting ready for her second campaign at the helm of the program, Sewali could not contain her excitement over her first two bonafide recruits. "Their experience, their talent level and their leadership is something that is going to be great for the program," said the former OUA player.

"These girls will bring a different dynamic. The challenge is going to be blending it, because we're bringing together girls from a different level of play," Sewali continued. "But I think that's the exciting part, because that's going to raise the level of intensity, it's going to push everyone even harder."

Cambrian College brought home a pile of hardware from the Ontario Technological Skills Competition, which took place May 4-6 in Waterloo. Ten Cambrian students competed and five came back to Sudbury with medals around their necks.

Cambrian College won three gold medals, one silver and one bronze in the following categories:

Gold: Dominic Savoie for Heavy Equipment; Jawala Birdi for IT Network Systems and Carson Scarr for Automation and Control

Silver: Jordan Chartier for Heating and Ventilation

Bronze: Ben Lambert for IT Network Systems

College President Bill Best says these results once again prove Cambrian is a topnotch postsecondary institution.

“I congratulate our students and their faculty coaches for the excellent showing,” he says. “Year after year, Cambrian students earn their place on the medal podium, which speaks volumes about the efforts of our faculty and the quality of students who choose to study at Cambrian.”

More than 1,900 competitors vied for top spots in more than 65 skilled trade and technology areas. Winners of the provincial championships move on to the Skills Canada National Competition, which takes place May 27-30 in Saskatoon.

Journalism alumnus reflects on sports reporter career

Posting Date: 4/8/2016

News Type: News Feature

Text Content:

Few of the alumni of Cambrian College have worn their Golden Shield pride on their heart more than journalism graduate Norm Mayer. The long-time Sudbury Star reporter and member of the Sudbury Sports Hall of Fame, came by his love of sport quite naturally; a passion that only grew stronger during his time at the New Sudbury campus.

“I started in the journalism program in 1978, and began writing for the school paper on the sports beat, covering a lot of the varsity teams,” Mayer recalled recently, continuing the work that he does as the primary sports historian for the House of Kin Sports Celebrity Dinner.

“When I got on with the Star in 1981, one of the first beats I had was Cambrian. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the coaching staffs and management there,” Mayer continued. “If you had any questions, the door was always open to talk to them.”

And while time might cause some memories to fade, the wide world of sports seems to have a stronger ability to etch certain visions in the minds of those who have been witness to the athletic feats of athletes from years gone by.

“Watching the development of John Tymchuk,” noted Mayer. “Every time he was on the court, something would happen. He had a unique knack of driving to the boards, and doing these dipsy-doodle shots.”

He recalls, with fondness, the reception that was granted the Sandra Wickham curling rink in the late 1980s when they were feted in the main lobby of the college after being crowned national champs.

He laughs, almost immediately, when asked about the men’s hockey program. “I had a lot of respect for Doug Bonhomme, because that hockey team was something else,” said Mayer, not necessarily pointing to their incredible talents on the ice. “They had some antics sometimes – and Doug was just a really good guy to talk to.”

As decades passed, friendships were formed, including the affiliation with the always likeable, and now retired, athletic director Bob Piché. “The thing about Bob was that he never really got excited over anything,” noted Mayer. “The only time I saw some excitement was when his hockey team won nationals.”

And while no single coach represents Golden Shield athletics, these days, quite as much as quarter century veteran Dale Beausoleil, Mayer was privy to the early days in the tenure of the graduate of Confederation Secondary School.

“They (women’s volleyball) were struggling in the early days, but Dale never gave up,” reminisced Mayer. “You would talk to him, and he would say, “someday, I’m going to have the team,” alluding to the kind of squad that could compete on a provincial, and occasionally national scale.

Prompted to identify the greatest Cambrian athlete that he had seen perform, Mayer deftly sidestepped the question. “I’m not the kind of guy to pick a number one,” he smiled. “I’m more of a two, three, four kind of a guy.”
Yet to this day, long after his involvement with the coverage of local sports, Norm Mayer continues to follow the Golden Shield. “I enjoy seeing what’s going on,” he said. “And it was where I graduated.”

UNDO: graphic design students expose how analyzing errors enhances design

Text Content:

SUDBURY – Mistakes happen. Identifying them is such an important part of the design process that this was chosen as the theme for Cambrian College’s Graphic Design graduating student exhibit, called UNDO.

For their final show, Graphic Design students were tasked with analyzing past work to spot errors in judgment. “People make bad decisions professionally, and graphic design isn’t any different,” said program coordinator Ron Beltrame. “UNDO is an exhibition that challenges graphic design students to reflect on past work and to admit that no design is perfect. It also helps them to see how mistakes form a key part of the design process, and that identifying them contributes to better design concepts, better finished products, and more masterful designers.”

The work, including students’ analysis of their errors, will be the focus of the graduating students’ exhibit, UNDO. An opening reception is planned for Thursday, April 14, at Cambrian’s downtown Open Studio from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visitors may also view UNDO at the Open Studio from 12 to 3 p.m., or by appointment, Friday through Sunday (April 15 to 17).
Animation program coordinator James Munro said that anyone who is curious about the field of animation, the creative processes, the program at Cambrian, or prospective careers should take advantage of the show, and the chance to ask questions at the reception. “The event on Thursday will be interesting because most of our students do not seek the spotlight, but this is an occasion where they get some attention, along with their work,” Munro said. “Most animators are talented artists who are drawn to the field because they’re ‘closet actors,’” he continued. “You aren’t likely to find them in front of a camera, but the characters they develop are very expressive. Ultimately, animated characters may join human actors on screen, appear in video games, television shows, features, and ad campaigns. The characters may be loved, hated, or laughed at by millions of people.”

Munro explained that many of his graduates become successful artists working in the television and film industries; others choose careers or projects in marketing and digital content creation.

Date: Thursday, April 7, 2016
Time: 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. (reception)
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (April 8-10): 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. or by appt.
Location: Cambrian College’s downtown Open Studio, 93 Cedar Street, Unit 303

ABOUT CAMBRIAN’S ANIMATION PROGRAM
Cambrian College’s Animation program is delivered through a partnership with Sheridan College, and is based on Sheridan’s renowned curriculum. The program focuses on traditional (hand-drawn), 2D-digital, and 3D animation. Learning takes place within Cambrian’s 13,900-square-foot animation studio, using the latest equipment and software.

SUDBURY – Cambrian College alumna Madisyn Latham is enjoying her time in the spotlight as one of five national semi-finalists in the Public Relations category of the Emerge Media Awards. The awards program celebrates and showcases the achievements of journalism, media studies and communications students from across Canada.

Latham’s submission to the awards program was a 40-page communications plan for the Sudbury Women’s Centre, an assignment that she wrote last year as part of her Strategic Communications class at Cambrian. “I’m thrilled with all of the congratulations I’ve received from my professors and peers through email and social media,” Latham said from her home in London, Ontario, where she is completing her Master of Media in Journalism and Communications at Western University.

“At Western, we were encouraged to submit our best student work to the awards program. I thought my communications plan, which I completed at Cambrian, was my most polished assignment, so that’s what I chose,” Latham explained. “I’m proud that the industry judges selected my submission, and I have to thank my strategic communications professor at Cambrian, David Kilgour, in particular, for his guidance and expertise.”

Latham graduated from Cambrian College’s Public Relations graduate certificate program and Laurentian University’s Bachelor of Arts in Communications programs together in 2015, through an agreement between the two schools. Public Relations program coordinator and professor, David Kilgour, said “Students who combine the two programs enjoy getting the best of both worlds.” Latham is a case in point. Continuing to build her connections, she is starting an internship in May through her Master’s program, “I’ll be interning at an established London marketing and public relations agency,” she said. “I’m from here originally, and I’m aspiring to start my career here.”

After learning about Latham’s student assignment and the industry recognition it had received, Tracy De Vos, Executive Director of the Sudbury Women’s Centre was curious to see if it might be valuable to the organization. “We’re in the midst of drafting a new strategic plan, and her report was an interesting read from a communications perspective,” said De Vos. “She really did her research, and she identified strategies that we will consider when we move forward with building our strategic plan.”

The finalists of Emerge Media Awards will be announced on April 25.

Profs, President Get Wet at Charity Carnival

On Wednesday March 24, Cambrian College Public Relations students offered students a sweet treat during their mid-terms and added some extra excitement through an on-campus carnival fundraiser.

The carnival featured a popular pie-toss and a dunk tank. Faculty and staff members, including Cambrian President Bill Best, volunteered to help raise funds and support the student-driven initiative. Many Public Relations students enjoyed the opportunity to “pie” David Kilgour (their professor) in the face, along with the other pie-toss volunteers. President Best was a popular dunk tank volunteer, splashing into the water no less than 17 times over the course of an hour.

Proceeds from the Carnival went to the Cambrian College Foundation in support of Public Relations student bursaries the Sam Bruno P.E.T. Scan Fund.

SUDBURY–On Wednesday, March 23, Cambrian College’s Alumni Association is pleased to welcome two special guests: Brandon Fisher, the driller who led the team that rescued 33 men trapped for 69 days in a Chilean mine, and Suzanne Bernier, who is a Cambrian graduate and the author of Disaster Heroes: Invisible Champions of Help, Hope and Healing.

Brandon Fisher is an American driller and entrepreneur who came up with a plan to save the lives of 33 miners. Trapped 2,300 feet underground, it was thought that they would die before they could be reached by rescue crews. Fisher’s team proposed an innovative rescue strategy, which became known as “Plan B.” He and his team spent a gruelling 33 days in the Atacama Desert in order to accomplish a rescue that was thought to be impossible. In2011, Fisher’s efforts were recognized by U.S. President Barack Obama in his 2011 State of the Union address, and the incredible story formed the basis for the 2015 film, The 33.

This is Fisher’s first Canadian appearance, during which, he will present his story of engineering ingenuity. He will explain how and why his plan worked, in conjunction with Bernier, whose book features a chapter highlighting Fisher’s accomplishment.

About Suzanne Bernier
Suzanne Bernier is an award-winning and internationally-recognized author, crisis management consultant, instructor and speaker, who helped governments, communities and companies to plan for and respond to disasters for nearly twenty years. She is also former journalist whose 2015 book, Disaster Heroes, details inspiring true stories about people who have made outstanding efforts to help others during major crises such as the Chilean mine collapse and Hurricane Katrina. Disaster Heroes has been featured in national and international media, including CTV’s Canada AM and CBC’s The Current. Bernier is a 1988 Cambrian College Journalism graduate. Signed copies of Disaster Heroes will be available for sale at the event.

Seating is limited. Admission is free with a donation to the Cambrian College Student Food Bank. Tickets may be reserved online at www.cambriancollege.ca/disasterheroes.

SUDBURY –Students at Cambrian College are actively committing themselves to an Indigenous grassroots movement to end violence against women and children through the Moose Hide campaign. The movement has its roots in British Columbia, and began with Indigenous men inviting all other men to honour, respect, and protect the women and children in their lives, and to support and hold each other accountable to end the cycle of violence.

Although the Moose Hide campaign is not yet well-known in northern Ontario, male and female students are actively promoting it to other students, staff, and faculty. They’re asking everyone to join them in taking a pledge to stand up against violence, and they’re pinning pieces of moose hide to their jackets and shirts to signify their commitment to the cause.

They’re making personal commitments to stand up against violence and to be role models in their families and communities, which is both courageous and compassionate,” Senecal continued.

It’s not often that you find professors teaching in classrooms, labs, and shops once they have reached their seventies, but Larry McLaughlin Sr. is a different kind of instructor with a passion for his trade. The great-grandfather has been preparing corporate training students for their Industrial Mechanic (millwright) Red Seal exams since 2000, helping them to earn their “passport to work,” or Red Seal journeyperson certificate.

McLaughlin Sr. comes from a family of miners, and although he started down the same path, he became a trainer decades ago at the former International Nickel Company (Inco) millwright training division. Even after retiring from Inco, he never stopped learning and teaching, taking on training roles through Cambrian College’s Corporate Training division. “The technology’s changed drastically in the trade,” remarked McLaughlin Sr., “but you still need to understand the theory and be able to do the math.”
A proud tradesman, McLaughlin Sr. is happy to see his son and grandsons follow in his footsteps, building strong careers and investing in their own futures. His son, Larry Jr., started his mining career in Elliot Lake as a heavy duty equipment technician, and now works in mine maintenance in Sudbury. Larry Sr.’s grandson, Brent, graduated from the Millwright program at Cambrian and is also working in Sudbury. His other grandson (Brent’s brother), Brad, is studying at Cambrian to become a millwright, and earned a spot on the President’s Honour Roll, so there is little doubt that he soon he will become the latest of the McLaughlin millwrights.
