The first month of 2012 is passing by and it’s high time we see what the Mac App Store have in store for us news junkies. Read on for a glimpse of the latest current crop of feed readers for the Mac.

In this post you can find a handpicked list of the more interesting RSS readers available for Mac OS X. I’ve broken down the list into three categories:

The Always On. These RSS readers sit quietly in the background and practically merge with your desktop. You typically use these applications for those brief one minute gaps when you desire some desktop distractions.

The Laid Back. These RSS applications are meant for enjoying news while you sit down and relax on your couch or lazy chair. They are designed to be autonomous and require minimum input from you to consume your daily news.

The Classics. This category of RSS readers follows the tried-and-true metaphor of an e-mail client, pretty similar to Apple Mail, Microsoft Outlook, or even ye olde Netscape Messenger. These apps typically has a list of feeds in a left pane and the primary news content will be on the primary pane.

And now, on with the list!

The Always On

RSS Menu

Like what the name says, RSS Menu sits in your menu bar unobtrusively. The application adds an RSS icon as a Mac menu extra that you need to click to read your news items. Selecting an item opens your default web browser with the item’s full article. There are some extras like integration with read-later services, Twitter, and some other tidbits but that’s just about it. RSS Menu is a bare-bones no-fuss RSS application. It’s pretty much what you can find in Safari’s RSS toolbar but omnipresent in all application in the right-side of the menu bar.

Of course there are other Mac menu extra RSS readers out there, but I find that RSS Menu successfully pack more power without compromising the form factor. Definitely if you’re a fan of menu extra applications, you should check this one out.

NewsBar

If your desktop is mostly empty and you don’t run many applications at one time then you could find NewsBar as the feed reader to keep on your Mac. News feeds are streamed on top of your desktop, unobtrusively below all other applications. Seen an interesting news item? Just click on it and the stream freezes to show you that article’s content.

NewsBar’s edge over other RSS readers for the Mac will shine when you use it on the 27″ iMac. With a screen that big, why miss out on your beautiful desktop wallpaper to read the news?

Zipline

Fancy of news tickers that you often see on television? Now you can get one for your desktop. Zipline presents news needs in a scrolling ticker just below your Mac’s menu bar that you can see no matter what application that is currently active – if you don’t maximize it, that is. In a sense, Zipline is a lightweight “Zen” version of NewsBar.

The Laid Back

RSS Screen Saver

Since screen savers are actually screen burners and doesn’t save screens, why not have it display something useful instead? The RSS Screen Saver comes built-in with Mac OS X and displays fleeting news items in a beautiful ethereal setting. It uses the same set of RSS feeds that you subscribe to in Safari but limited to only one news feed, which is pretty okay considering that it’s a nice-to-have add-on to the OS. The technically inclined can use Yahoo Pipes to amalgamate multiple feeds together and then finally feed it into this app for news reading during idle times.

News Anchor

Get a glimpse of the future when computers finally replace newscasters. Seriously this RSS reader literally reads your news feeds, as in text-to-speech, which is quite far out unlike other RSS readers for Mac OS X. News Anchor has a notion of channels which is a bunch of RSS feeds grouped together and played to you in a single shot just like television news broadcasts. Like television news channels, you can have a Business channel, an Entertainment channel, and pretty much any combination you can dream of. In fact, the application comes with those three channels that you can use as starting points to make your own.

Spout

Get ready to be dazzled! Spout blasts headlines in a head-turning, eye-popping lively display. Spout is perfect for ambient news displays at parties or other leisure-oriented gatherings. Although you might want to keep this away from anybody who has photosensitive epilepsy as it may trigger seizures. Note that Spout has versions for Mac and iOS and the latter also works both on the iPhone and iPad.

The Classics

NetNewsWire

This is the granddaddy of RSS apps for the Mac and still going strong too. Being a forerunner for desktop RSS readers, NetNewsWire pretty much established the look-end-feel of many other applications in the category. As you can see for yourself, the interface quite resembles Apple Mail or Microsoft Outlook — which themselves look like Netscape Messenger that was popular at the end of the last millennia.

Reeder

Reeder has a collapsible three-pane view approach for displaying your news. When fully expanded, it looks quite similar to Microsoft Outlook. However when fully contracted it becomes more like the Official Twitter Client for the Mac.

Reeder’s focus is to be a Google Reader client, which is quite useful if you often find yourself in a low-bandwidth situation such that GReader’s HTML interface becomes too slow for you.

NewsLife

Another classic-looking RSS reader, NewsLife differentiates itself by offering an iOS-like interface. In short it’s like an iPad app with an Aqua frame. It also has an overview mode looks to mimic Windows Phone 7’s Metro interface style.

Conclusion

With all these options, which one to choose for reading RSS in your Mac? That depends on you, really. If you’re mostly a hands-off person and like to have a dedicated time for reading news, I recommend using an RSS reader in the Laid Back category. On the other hand if you’re really busy when you’re on your computer and have only brief amounts of time to get your news, try the ones in the Always On category. Last but not least, if you’re the fidgety type and like to click around, feed readers in the Classics category will serve you best.

With a world streaming with information, gushing from all over the place, you would ask, who needs another one? But the internet is not created equally in all parts of the world, especially in third world countries.

While I was visiting my family in Indonesia. I realized how awful the internet connection there, except when you are in the hotel or in a private home with cable. You won’t be able to open a webpage without waiting a few minutes. Watching TV does not help much for world travelers, unless you speak bahasa, because the news are mostly in bahasa.

This is where News Anchor for Mac comes in. News Anchor for Mac 2.4.5, is a lightweight RSS application. You will need to buy it from the AppStore for 29.99 $, but I think it is worth the price. RSS is basically the text data given by news sites. So when you download your news, using RSS, you will only get the news, without the frills. You will need to read by yourself to get more details on this baby. But I will spill a few beans here relating to creating a podcast.

The screen you will get after installing News Anchor for Mac

When I want to know the latest news, I just need to click the Refresh button, then it will update all its RSS channel. It’s pretty fast.

Frankly when I am in Jakarta, I don’t always open my Mac wherever I go. Like when I’m stuck in traffic, opening your laptop is way to dangerous, unless you want some thugs to smash the window and snatch it away. The good thing is your feed RSS can also be ported into a podcast, so you can hear it in your iPhone, or smartphone, while on the go. Below are some screens on how to configure the podcast.

Click the ‘i’ icon, and remember to select ‘Generate podcast’, ‘add to iTunes’. It will get automatically synced to iTunes. Afterwards, since I am using a Blackberry, I run my Blackberry device manager, and sync the folder where the podcast is located with my Blackberry. You can see physically where the folder is by clicking the button ‘Show in Finder’. You will be able to find the podcast in the Music folder. Afterwards just listen to the news. Yes the voice is a bit robotic, but I like the synchronization feature between my Mac and my smartphone. Really gets me connected everywhere.

This release is about supporting Lion’s sandboxing requirement that will be mandatory for all 3rd party applications sold via the Mac App Store (MAS). Because of limitations of the sandbox, we have no choice but to remove two features from the MAS edition of News Anchor:

Apple Infrared Remote

Silent Refresh (silently refreshing feeds and generating channel episode while News Anchor is not running)

If you’re a MAS customer and really need these two features, please use the direct-download version of News Anchor. You will need to run your MAS copy at least once for every computer you have it installed, so that the direct-download version can read your MAS license file.

I’m both happy and sad in writing out this announcement. Happy for finally have completed tweaking News Anchor to adhere to Apple’s new sandboxing requirement. Sad that I had to drop a couple of features from News Anchor. Namely dropping support for the Apple Infrared Remote and the ability to refresh feeds in the background while News Anchor is not running (silent refresh).

Sandboxing is a security feature that prevents applications from doing things that they shouldn’t do. It limits the files that the application can access, limits what peripheral devices that the application can use and grants access only to the system services that the application requests as part of its metadata (such as the address book or calendar). Essentially sandboxing allows Mac OS X to be as secure as the iOS, at least it should be when 100% of the applications are sandboxed.

Unfortunately sandboxing — as it is currently implemented in Lion and will be enforced for all apps in the Mac App Store — prevents applications from providing some functionalities for the end user. For News Anchor’s case, these are support for the infrared remote and silent refresh as mentioned earlier. I’ve reported these issues to Apple (rdar://10257540 and rdar://10369910) but they haven’t come out with a solution.

Speaking about the remote, both of us recently switched to the new 2011 MacBook Air and to our dismay these machines doesn’t have an IR port (unlike the first-gen Airs). This hinders testing of the IR feature once I sold my 2007 MacBook Pro. Because of this there isn’t much choice but de-supporting the IR remote in subsequent releases.

If you really need these two features, you can use the direct-download version of News Anchor. If you have bought News Anchor from the Mac App Store, you’ll need to run that version at least once in every computer that you use. Then the direct-download version should be able to see your MAS license and authenticate your purchase.

So I guess that’s all for now folks. You should see News Anchor 2.3.4 within a few days and the App Store version will be sandboxed as per Apple’s demand articulated in WWDC 2011.

Thanks and take care.

By now you probably have heard of the online filter bubble. You probably feel unease by the sheer number of people being encased in a filter bubble and concerned that you yourself might be trapped in one and would like to get out from your filter bubble. Let me tell you that the filter bubble is nothing new – it exists in another form before the Internet became mainstream and you can use age-old method to escape being trapped inside a filter bubble.

The filter bubble is nothing but online groupthink facilitated by software agents that constantly tries to second-guess your preferences. These algorithms monitors your Internet activities, figure out your preferences, and offers more of the same to you. This includes your Internet searches, the articles that you click in Google Reader, and your friends’ posts on Facebook and Google Plus. At its surface, it looks like this is a good thing since it filters out the noise and helps you see only the “good stuff”. But if yo’re not careful, this could easily homogenize your world and trap you inside a sphere that echoes the ramblings of your inner id.If you’re happy with your tiny little world and care less of what’s happening outside the mirror images of yourself then stop now. Continue only if you crave for perspective and intrigued by differing worldviews.

The classic groupthink is caused by surrounding yourself with people that thinks the same way as you do. It gets things done, for sure, since there is less arguing about how to do things. But it fails beyond a certain extent due to the lack of perspective due to the low variety. Online groupthink happens in a similar fashion – your online peer thinks the same way as you do and you read blogs and articles that strengthens your view of the world. Without realizing, soon enough you became trapped in an online filter bubble.

Then how to get out from the online filter bubble? Pretty much the same way you avoid getting trapped in a groupthink. Make an effort to add variety to your online life. Don’t rely too much on “smart” filters with opaque algorithms (i.e. filters that you don’t know how it works). Spend some time to read blogs written by people with opposing viewpoints. Connect with people outside your industry. Search Google in the “logged out” state. Use RSS readers that doesn’t filter articles without you explicitly telling them what to filter.

Having variety and knowing opposing worldviews is the first step of “thinking different”. It makes you uncomfortable for sure, but in the long run it expands your comfort zone and allows you to be versatile in many situations.

Take care now, keep your eyes open and your ears sharp.

You will be pleased to know that News Anchor 2.4.2 is now available for download. Mac App Store customers can use the App Store application to update News Anchor whereas direct-download customers

This version is primarily bug fixes and performance enhancements. The Growl notifications are better: it properly notifies how many new episodes that you have and whether there was any feed that couldn’t be reached during the refresh cycle. Furthermore channel images are now stored as individual files which helps to combat fragmentation of the main database file.

Channel images are now stored as separate JPEG2000 files, which is a better image format for thumbnails and help increase the performance of the channel selection display. Special thanks to Will Shipley for his writeup about JPEG2000 as a good format for thumbnailed images. As what Will Shipley have noted, JPEG2000 is much faster than normal JPEG starting from Mac OS X 10.5.

Enjoy your updated copy of News Anchor!

We’re happy to say that News Anchor 2.4 is now available for you to download. Mac App Store customers can open the App Store application and have a look at its Update section whereas direct-download customers can simply choose the “Check for Updates” menu option under the application menu.

Summary of changes in this version:

Growl support.

Performance improvements.

Growl Support

News Anchor can now display notifications during a refresh cycle. It notifies:

When the refresh cycle is done.

Whenever there is a new episode created during that cycle.

Whenever there is a problem in loading data from any of the RSS feeds during the refresh.

By default News Anchor will only notify you when a refresh cycle is done, but you can turn on the other two notification types in the Growl preference pane (in System Preferences).

Note that you will need to install Growl yourself. News Anchor couldn’t include Growl since it is a system-wide component and Mac App Store applications are not allowed to install those kind of components.

Performance Improvements

News Anchor should now perform better and doesn’t lock up when you’re refreshing a large number of channels. This optimization should be more apparent for those using lower-specification macs (like the first generation MacBook Air) on really fast Internet connections.

Recently the BBC wrote that Indonesia is a good country for entrepreneurs. As an Indonesian, I found the article hard to believe, primarily from the viewpoint of a technology entrepreneur.

Why? One reason is high tax rate. The last time I check the corporate tax rate is about 20%, income tax about 15% and value-added tax about another 15%. Of course Indonesia also uses progressive income and corporate tax schemes thus these rates are only ballpark figures. But you get the idea. Not only the official tax is rather high, there are also various kinds of bribes and kickbacks that you inevitably have to fork out when dealing with government bodies. What’s worse, I’ve heard from my colleagues that you also need to give kickbacks even when you’re doing business in the private sector.

All that taxes in return for parliament members that are either too busy backstabbing each other, playing Tetris, or watch porn on the job. Instead of progressing the nation, grow our economy, and stop selling out our rainforests.

Another reason is the lack of any legal certainty. The courts decisions still lean toward the favors of those who can dispense more money. In kickbacks of course. Hint: just look at the case of Ariel. Why do you think he got jail time? Because one husband of the many ladies who went with him is a powerful tycoon. To protect the guilty (and to protect myself) I wont tell you which one.

Yet another reason is the lack of buying power and brain drain. These two factors feed off each other and causes a downward spiral. That is, because salaries are low encourages people with technical skills to go outside the country to find jobs, which causes technology industry to suffer and pay even less, which exacerbate the problem. Salaries of good software engineers barely reaches $900/month gross whereas a Big Mac costs about $4. As you can see, things are also expensive over there but people haven’t got much to buy stuff with. That’s one of the reasons why selling consumer software doesn’t really work there.

On the other hand, its possible that BBC was being just another corporate click whore. They found a potentially controversial survey result and brought it up to get clicks from skeptics. Whether the survey was fair and accurate was not important since the BBC has enough clout to be believable by outsiders and the common crowd.

Another lesson learned saying that you shouldn’t immediately believe something is true just because a big media company reports it and says its true. There could be hidden hands at work behind the scenes with their own vested interests.
