Nokia Debuts Three Symbian Smartphones

Nokia hasn’t quite completed its transition to Windows Phone 7, so it’s still got a few Symbian phones up its sleeve … even if Symbian is all but dead here in the United States.

Nokia announced three new handsets Wednesday, each with a specific claim to fame and running Belle, the latest version of Symbian OS.

The Nokia 600 is the cheapest of the bunch. It features Nokia’s loudest speaker to date, which can blast tunes at 106 phons, and an FM transmitter. It also is said to have a 60-hour battery life.

The Nokia 700 is Nokia’s tiniest smartphone. The third model, the 701, is said to have the brightest display on the market (even in direct sunlight): a 3.5-inch ClearBlack AMOLED display. It also sports an 8-megapixel camera capable of shooting HD video. The 700 and 701 both feature a 1-GHz processor.

Earlier this year, Nokia announced it would abandon the Symbian OS in favor of Windows Phone 7. That stunned a lot of people and left Symbian developers feeling alienated. Following the announcement, Nokia said it had a 12-month timeline for the OS swap, so we won’t be seeing Nokia WP7 devices until 2012. The company said it would release about 20 Symbian smartphones in the interim.

All three models announced today have NFC capabilities, which makes it dead easy to wirelessly share photos and videos, connect to accessories like speakers, or share contact information with Nokia-toting friends.

The 600, 700, and 701 are each available in a variety of hues, ranging from metallic gray to eye-popping flamingo pink, and will be priced at €180, €270 and €290, [$260, $390 and $419] respectively.

Though the Comment’s $90 price tag feels a tad high for a phone with relatively few features, Cricket’s monthly plans are a cheap alternative to a pricier Android or iOS phone and plan. Picking up an Android or iPhone 4 handset will set you back around 200 bones, not to mention around $90 a month for services. Cricket’s monthly plans float around the $40 range, which is just about right for the cellular company’s target audience; most Cricket customers fall in the 35-and-under category, with an income of less than $50,000 a year.

If recent buying trends continue in the United States, phones like the Comment may end up a relic of times past. According to a recent Nielsen survey, a majority of cellular phones bought in the United States right now are smartphones despite the availability of cheaper alternatives. Compare that to just three years ago when less than 20 percent of all phones sold were smartphones.

Quotes and dialogue are one of the most powerful tools in the writer’s toolbox. They bring your writing to life. They give your piece voice and make the words jump off the page. As the famous writer Stephen King once said, “What people say often conveys their character to others in ways of which they—the speakers—are completely unaware.”

While most bloggers understand the power of quotes, they do not know how to format them properly. This post is a crash course in how to use and punctuate quotes in your writing.

Please note that there are exceptions to some of these rules (depending on whether you use the American standard or the UK standard). But for most part if you follow these rules you will be fine.

How to capitalize a quote

All quotes should be capitalized, except for fragments. If your quotes are not capitalised, your readers may think it is a partial quote with the ellipsis omitted.

Even when you quote someone mid-sentence, you should capitalise the quote.

As George Santayana famously said, “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”

How to extend a quote over multiple paragraphs

Say you want to break up the following quote into two paragraphs:

“I always say to people,” said Archer in an interview, “don’t write about goblins; don’t write about wizards just because they’re in. Write what you feel at ease with. Always remember Jane Austen. [She] lived in a small village, and wrote about her mother being unable to get rid of four daughters. Then she wrote about her mother being unable to get rid of three daughters. Then she wrote about her mother being unable to get rid of two daughters.”

Most people open and close the quote in each paragraph:

“I always say to people,” said Archer in an interview, “don’t write about goblins; don’t write about wizards just because they’re in. Write what you feel at ease with.”

“Always remember Jane Austen. [She] lived in a small village, and wrote about her mother being unable to get rid of four daughters. Then she wrote about her mother being unable to get rid of three daughters. Then she wrote about her mother being unable to get rid of two daughters.”

The correct way of doing this is not to close the quote at the end of each paragraph, only the last one:

How to edit a quote

It is amazing how many mistakes we make when speaking. It is only when you transcribe the speech to paper that you see these mistakes. As a writer then, you are allowed to clean up quotes.

For example, consider the following quote:

“There’s a 1000 people in the hall and they all love what I do.”

Clean it up so the verb agrees with the plural “people.”

“There are 1000 people in the hall and they all love what I do.”

The only exception is that if you want to make the author sound uneducated that you leave the quote in its original form.

How to add to a quote

If you need to add to a quote, do not simply include the extra words in the quote. Use the “[ ]” marker to show your additions.

As he said in an interview, “[The prosecution’s case] was weaker than Columbus’s claim that China was 10,000 miles closer than was the accepted wisdom at the time.”

How to include original errors without making yourself look silly

How to handle commas and periods in your quotes

Do you place commas and periods (full stops) outside or inside of the quotation marks? Answer: It depends. The American standard is that commas and periods go inside the quotation marks, regardless of logic:

As my grandfather used to say, “Better out than an angry tenant.”

The English standard is that commas and periods follow logic:

As my grandfather used to say, “Better out than an angry tenant”.

If you are unsure which standard to follow, include the commas and periods inside the quotation marks.

How to handle question marks and exclamation marks in your quotes

When it comes question marks (?) and exclamation marks (!) both American and English standards follow logic. So if the question is in the quote itself, place it inside of the quotation marks. Otherwise place it outside the quotation marks.

Thus equipped, I could use a dictionary app and view photos taken of the whiteboard from previous lessons (with a proper camera, dammit) while writing on paper, all without anything slipping off the desk. There’s even a cut out for plugging in headphones, which frankly seems dumb, or at least pointless.

'By creating a unique password for each important account, consumers create the first line of defense against online thieves who can't wait to gain access to critical data for financial gain.'

The R also comes with double the RAM of the previous generation at 1 GB, which will hopefully be enough to keep memory-intensive apps running smoothly. And for smartphone shutterbugs, the 5-megapixel back-facing camera is capable of shooting 720p HD video.

For now, the phone is available only in Sweden, with North American and Asian releases to come soon. The company hasn’t provided price details, but given the midlevel specs and the looming release of the S2, it’s probably a safe bet that the Galaxy R won’t cost more than $200.

Thus far, you can’t feed your Twitter, Facebook, or other updates into your Google+ stream. This means that if you see an update by someone on Google+, they actually made it on the network itself. Less noise, less spam.

2. Forced organization from the start.

I love the circles! You could just create one generic circle to throw everyone into, but I’d bet that since you have a few different default circles to start with, it gave you the idea to create better circles for friend categorization. There’s nothing like selecting my blogging circle for just my blogging friends’ updates or my photography circle for theirs.

And even better? I can send updates to one circle or the other, multiple circles, or just make them public. It’s genius!

3. Block tagging by specific people without unfriending them.

Unfortunately, photo tagging has already begun. In the same way that people tag photos on Facebook just to get your attention even if you’re not in the photo, so people do on Google+.

Tiger Woods to skip British Open

Tiger Woods will skip the British Open too.

Woods announced via his website Tuesday that he won't play in the British Open next week. Following the revelation that he hasn't swung a club since the Players Championship, that's no surprise. Still, it's compelling that Woods - out with left leg injuries - seems so far removed from a return to golf.

Not teeing it up in majors is the best pointed evidence of how serious Woods' injuries were and how serious his commitment to returning to the game only when healthy.

"Unfortunately, I've been advised that I should not play in the British Open," Woods said on his Web site. "As I stated at the AT&T National, I am only going to come back when I'm 100 percent ready. I do not want to risk further injury. That's different for me, but I'm being smarter this time. I'm very disappointed and want to express my regrets to the British Open fans."

Even when Woods wasn't playing, his results were troubling. He hasn't won a tournament in nearly two years, his most recent at the BMW Championship in 2009. Woods' has fallen to No. 17 in the world, he skipped the U.S. Open while wearing a boot on his left foot. He said last week at the AT&T National, the tournament he hosts, that he has just been putting recently. He hasn't swung a club for almost two months.

Woods suffered the injuries - diagnosed as a Grade 1 mild sprain to his left knee and a mild strain to his left Achilles tendon - originally at the Masters, then

tried to come back for the Players Championship in May but withdrew after nine holes of the tournament. He hasn't played since.

Since his hiatus from golf, Woods has said he's not coming back until he's healthy, and judging by his decision to skip two majors, he's serious.

Facebook to make 'awesome' announcement

Facebook has scheduled a Wednesday news conference to announce the launch of what it termed "something awesome."

The leading theory is that the company will unveil a video-chat feature powered by Skype.

Facebook didn't provide any details in an e-mail inviting media members to the event, to be held at its Palo Alto, California, headquarters. But CEO Mark Zuckerberg promised last week it would be "something awesome."

Zuckerberg was touring Facebook's engineering site in Seattle and wouldn't give many details, only saying that the announcement would be about something developed there. It's hard to imagine the timing of the announcement is random.

Since it was launched last week, Google has been getting all the online buzz in the social-media world for its new networking platform, Google+.

Google may be digital light years away from rivaling Facebook's nearly 600 million users worldwide. But after Buzz, Wave and other failed efforts, Google+ looks like the search engine's most serious leap yet into the social-networking world.

Genetic Component of Autism Spectrum Disorders May Be Moderate Compared to Environment

After evaluating twin pairs in which at least one child has autism or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), researchers suggest that the shared environment may play a more substantial role in development of the condition than shared genes do, according to a report published Online First by Archives of General Psychiatry, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Current estimates suggest that 40 of every 10,000 children have autism, and prevalence rates for ASDs are about 1 percent, according to background information in the article. Studies of siblings have found a concordance rate (the likelihood that if one child has the disorder, others will as well) of up to 14 percent. The authors note that in previous studies of twins, concordance rates for autism were relatively high for identical (monozygotic) twins, but nonexistent for fraternal (dizygotic) twins. Further, studies that depended on differing methods of diagnosis have resulted in a broad range of estimates of autism's heritability. "However," the authors state, "none of these more recent studies included structured clinical assessments by both parental interview and direct child observation, which is the contemporary standard for establishing the diagnosis of autism or ASD."

In the California Autism Twins Study, Joachim Hallmayer, M.D., from Stanford University School of Medicine, Palo Alto, Calif., and colleagues used data from the California Department of Developmental Services to identify potential participants. The researchers assessed twin pairs in which at least one child had an ASD diagnosis, using the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised, a structured parent interview and the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, as well as other tests to determine verbal and nonverbal cognitive abilities. Two diagnoses were utilized: strict autism and ASD. Children with autism or ASD that was included in the initial data and confirmed by the researchers were considered "probands."

The final analysis included 54 pairs of identical twins and 138 pairs of fraternal twins (of which 80 were composed of a boy and a girl). Researchers found the likelihood of both children having autism or ASD was higher among identical twins than among fraternal twins. They also used modeling to estimate how much of the risk could be attributed to genetic factors. This analysis demonstrated that more than half of the variance in risk was probably explained by shared environmental factors, versus less than 40 percent of the risk owing to genetic heritability.

3 Use 4 to 6 anchor text links for each keyword, depending on the size of the webpage. Referring back to video games as an example, when editing your page use anchor text such as video games, game systems and so on as links as close to the beginning and end of the page as possible. Keep in mind search engines read a page header first, then starting on the top left reading down the left side, after reaching the bottom of the page the content is read from the center of the page to the bottom. Then the right side of the page is read ending with the footer.

4 Keyword placement: It is essential that all of your keywords are at the beginning and the end of your webpage. Keywords need to be placed in the first 50 words of a webpage. Keywords also need to be placed into the last 50 words on the page. Start with the header of your webpage, use keywords there first. Then place keywords on the left side of your page. Try not to repeat keywords, and do not stuff images with keywords. One keyword per image. Whenever possible use anchor text instead of images.To place keywords at the end of the page, use keywords in the footer and on the right side of the page.
