The peace and quiet of the international break will be broken by the screech of football's most famous rivalry on Saturday, as Barcelona host Real Madrid in the latest edition of El Clásico. The Catalans head in as strong favorites, and currently sit at the La Liga summit, a healthy nine points clear of second-placed Atlético Madrid. They've not lost in the league since October, and it's difficult to envision an inconsistent Real Madrid being able to keep their attack quiet.

However, recent signs have suggested Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane has steered his side through some choppy waters, with four straight league wins moving them within a point of their crosstown rivals Atléti. It remains to be seen how adept he'll be at the tricky task of setting up a side to face the fiercest attack in world football -- this is the first Clásico in which he's had direct involvement since retiring as a player.

Key player: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)

As good as Barcelona are, when you've got Cristiano Ronaldo in your ranks, you've always got a chance. Real Madrid will be reliant on their star attacker delivering an outstanding performance on the counter-attack if they're to win this game, and they've got reason to believe: Ronaldo currently sits two points clear of Barça striker Luis Suárez at the top of the La Liga scoring charts, and you can bet your bottom dollar he'll be desperate to hold onto that individual honor.

Barcelona cruised to a 4-0 win over Rafael Benítez's Real Madrid in the only previous edition of El Clásico this season. It was the Catalan club's second consecutive derby victory, ending a run of two straight Real Madrid wins in this most prestigious of fixtures. However, not since April 2012 have Real Madrid won away at Camp Nou in the league, and they'd do well to repeat the feat on Saturday.

Barca will be without defenders Adriano and Mathieu, and young attacker Sandro, but are hoping to have first-team left back Alba back from an ankle sprain. Madrid have no certain absentees, but defender Varane and teenage forward Mayoral face late fitness tests.

THIS SUNDAY, TELEVISIONS will be graced with the 88th Academy Awards. Celebrities will walk the red carpet. Commentators will ask who they are wearing. And Chris Rock, who is definitely funnier than your friends, will host. The three-hour soiree is airing on ABC this Sunday night starting at 7 pm ET, and you probably want to watch (or at least have on in the background while you scroll Facebook looking for best-dressed lists).

Those of us who cut the cord might already be preparing in the days ahead by bringing on Oscar nominated vids streaming online. But you might be wondering how you’ll be able to watch the show come Sunday if you don’t have a television or cable at home. Here’s how.

Stream it online

The easiest option: Head to ABC’s site and stream it. Just like last year, ABC is streaming it for free (in some markets)…and just like last year, there could be some issues. The network’s Oscar stream in 2015 cut multiple times to random programming. The interruptions were also compounded by network TV’s characteristically slow online streaming.

Back to that “some markets” part. ABC only offers live streaming in Chicago, Fresno, Houston, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, Raleigh-Durham, and San Francisco. Sorry, literally almost everywhere else in the country! When you go to the website, you will be prompted to fill-in your TV provider credentials. So you’ll have to plug in a kindly friend or stranger’s login info. Basically, if you’re a cord-cutter through and through, it’s not a total solution.

Use the app

Oscars? There’s an app for that. It’s (surprise!) made by ABC and is available for download in the App Store, on Google Play, and via Amazon. But again, it only works in the aforementioned cities, and again, will require that you have an account with a TV provider. (Or, again, the login information of someone who does. We’re just saying.)

Vine and Periscope

There will be tons of beyond-the-scenes Vines, from celebrities, red carpet-goers, show producers, party and hosters. A simple #Oscars or #Oscars2016 search is going to yield more than enough results—too many, probably. There are some particularly active celebs on Vine to check out, if you want to narrow it down though, like Chrissy Teigen, Ryan Seacrest, Taye Diggs, and Jimmy Fallon. (We’re pretty sure those people will all be going to the Oscars…)

Now, that’s for some meta Oscars coverage—but we know, you’re probably looking to watch the real deal. Well where there’s a live TV event, there’s someone broadcasting it on Periscope. (Pro tip: Periscope doesn’t have search, so try Perisearch.) Yes, those streams might get shut down, but there will be a few to at least try. Will it look good? Probably not: Someone shooting live video of their Oscar party (or solo watch session, no judgement) doesn’t exactly scream “high quality.” But hey, such is the life of a cord cutter.

And if you have a TV, but no cable…

Buy a digital antenna. They generally cost upwards of $20 and you can get one at any home electronics store. Just like traditional set of rabbit ears, using a digital antenna on your TV set will give you a dozen or so channels, including your local ABC affiliate.

Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards 2016 Live Stream TV Info

The 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be held on Saturday 30 January at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California. The star-studded ceremony will honour the best of the achievements in film and television for the year 2015.

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey will present the SAG Life Achievement Award to veteran American actress, comedian Carol Burnett. Presented by SAG-AFTRA, the event will present 13 awards for acting in the two hour show which will simulcast live on TNT and TBS at 8 pm (ET) / 5 pm. (PT).

The Red Carpet Pre-Show will be hosted by People deputy editor of entertainment JD Heyman and entertainment reporter Caroline Moderressy-Tehrani.

Apart from Poehler and Fey, SAG has declared other presenters names which includes Idris Elba, Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo, Susan Sarandon, Jacob Tremblay, Kristen Wiig, Eddie Redmayne, Anthony Mackie and Julianne Moore. Indian actress and Quantico star Priyanka Chopra will also be an award presenter in the show.

This year the SAG award show has a garden theme which is why the entire Shrine Auditorium is being decorated with thousands of orchids and roses. More than 200 actors and actresses are expected to participate in the popular event.

Indiana Pacers vs Washington Wizards Live Stream TV Info

Indiana has played five of its last six games on the road, going just 2-3 in those contests outside the friendly confines of Bankers Life Field house. After hosting Washington on Friday, the Blue & Gold will embark on a difficult four-game Western Conference road trip that includes games against the defending NBA champion Warriors and a Sacramento Kings team that won in Indianapolis in December, plus visits to two cities (Denver and Phoenix) where the Pacers have historically struggled.

Match up:

On the surface, Friday's game against the Washington Wizards (18-19) might seem to be just another mid-January game for the Pacers (22-17). But given where it falls on the schedule, Friday's game against John Wall and the Wizards takes on an added importance.

For that reason, it is nearly imperative that the Pacers take care of business on Friday against an under performing and banged-up Wizards team. Though they return the core of the team that has reached the Eastern Conference Semifinals for two consecutive seasons, Washington has struggled mightily in 2015-16. The Wizards haven't had a winning record since Nov. 25 and currently are tied with the Knicks for 10th place in the East. Washington's injury report for Wednesday's game against Milwaukee listed a whopping seven players as questionable or worse, though four of them were ultimately able to play against the Bucks.

The Pacers, on the other hand, are mostly healthy with the exception of sixth man Rodney Stuckey, who is expected to miss at least two weeks with a sprain and bone bruise in his right foot. Stuckey suffered the injury in the first quarter of Tuesday's win over Phoenix and did not travel with the team for Wednesday's game in Boston.

In Stuckey's absence, Pacers head coach Frank Vogel has been giving his minutes to reserve guard/forwards Chase Budinger and Glenn Robinson III. Unlike Stuckey, neither of those players is capable of running the point, which meant starters George Hill and Monta Ellis handled all of the point guard duties in Wednesday's loss in Boston. Back at home, Vogel might opt to give a few spot minutes at the point to rookie Joe Young to spell his starting backcourt.

The Wizards' strength lies at the point guard position, where All-Star John Wall is having another stellar season. The 6-4 speedster is averaging 19.6 points and is tied for second in the NBA in assists, with 9.6 per contest. Historically a poor outside shooter, Wall is shooting a career-best 35.2 percent from 3-point range, including a .545 clip (12-for-22) over his last five games.

Wizards head coach Randy Wittman is a Hoosier native, Ben Davis High School & Indiana University Graduate and Pacers alumni player (1989-1992). While playing at IU, Randy was teammates with former Pacers coach Isiah Thomas.

November 24, 2015: Paul George and C.J. Miles put on a shooting clinic as the Pacers rolled to a 123-106 victory in Washington. Indiana set a franchise record by making 19 3-pointers in the win, with George and Miles combining to go an absurd 15-for-17 from beyond the arc.

George led all scorers with 40 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Miles added 32 points, making 8-of-9 attempts from 3-point range.

Stephen Fry and Gugu Mbatha-Raw announced the nominees for the 68th Annual BAFTA Awards in a live video stream from BAFTA's London headquarters Friday morning. The awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, Feb. 14, with Fry hosting. Bridge of Spies and Carol lead the pack with nine nominations each. The Toronto Raptors are trying to be a contending team in the Eastern Conference. The team fell short last year in the first round of the playoffs after raised expectations and now they are aiming to turn that around this year. The Raptors are well aware the Eastern Conference goes through Cleveland they will get their first taste of getting past that on Wednesday night as Kyle Lowry and DeMarre Carroll prepare for the challenge. Currently sitting at 9-6, the Raptors have looked strong this year coming back from a road trip where they went 2-3. The last time these two teams played each, Cleveland had their way with the Raptors. In the past three games with these two teams, Cleveland has averaged 110 points, winning all three while LeBron James averaged 29.3 points and 11.3 assists. Everyone knows that cannot happen again as head coach Dwane Casey hopes the team does not get ahead of themselves.

"It's a very good litmus test," Casey said, via ESPN.com. "They're playing good basketball right now. It seems like it's another road game where you're in town and then back out of town, but it's what the schedule gives us and we have to come prepared."

The Raptors are dealing with injuries right now. Their backcourt will have some question marks as Jonas Valanciunas fractured his hand during the road trip. That will add pressure to Lowry and DeMar DeRozan to make up in shooting while Luis Scola and Bismack Biyombo handle the frontcourt for the Raptors.

The Cavaliers are dealing with injuries right now to some of their biggest stars. Timofey Mozgov is out with a shoulder injury to pair with the issues to Kyrie Irving and Iman Shumpert. Mo Williams has also been dealing with leg issues. That has not necessarily hurt the Cavaliers from getting wins this season as both James and Kevin Love continue to thrive on the court. Meanwhile Matthew Dellavedova has been doing a solid job as the starting point guard, getting 25 assists in three games.

UFC 195: Lawler vs Condit Live Stream Fight and TV Info

UFC’s welterweight champion Robbie Lawler will put his title belt on the line when he faces former WEC king Carlos Condit in the main event of UFC 195 on Jan. 2 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.

UFC will kick off 2016 with a showdown between Condit (30-8 MMA, 7-4 UFC) and Lawler (26-10 MMA, 11-4 UFC). Condit, who is coming off an impressive victory over Thiago Alves in May, shrugged off the injury layoff he suffered in March 2014 that sidelined him for a year.

“Out of 12 or 13 years of competing professionally this was my first major injury, my first major layoff,” Condit told The Sun. “If you’re gonna step in there and fight at a very high level professionally you’re bound to get injuries, you’re bound to get layoffs. It comes with the territory.”

Condit, who is the underdog heading into the UFC 195 main card, is convinced he is in top form to take the welterweight gold from Lawler. However, the “Natural Born Killer” also believes his fight against Lawler could be his last shot to win a title, although he insists he is “100 percent” focused.

Meanwhile, Lawler, who is coming off one of the best fights of all time as he defeated Rory MacDonald at UFC 189 in July, is not stressing about the challenge of defending his title against Condit. While Lawler acknowledges Condit’s skills, “Ruthless” was clear that he is ready to take on any fighter put in front of him.

“You know I don’t worry about who they’re putting in front of me,” Lawler said, reports MMA Junkie. “Why would I worry? Why not? Why this guy? That’s just nonsense for me to waste my energy.”

UFC 195 will also feature a heavyweight clash in the co-main event as Stipe Miocic takes on Andrei Arlovski in a potential title elimination.

With their backs against the wall, the (4-6) Miami Dolphins travel to East Rutherford, New Jersey, as underdogs versus a rather vulnerable (5-5) New York Jets team. However, if statistical trends and other mathematical information proves to be correct, the final meeting between the AFC East rivals could and will likely come down to the wire.

That’s because there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that this game will be a low-scoring affair, and thus, the visiting team will have a legitimate chance to pull off the upset. That notion is supported by point-differentials, along with combined point totals, which tell a very compelling story.

The first piece of information is the fact that they’ve combined to score under the projected point total the last five times they’ve played at MetLife Stadium. Also, suggesting that points will be at a premium is the fact that Miami and New York have scored fewer than the projected points in five of this franchise’s last six games against one another, regardless of where the games took place.

The second set of stats to consider is that the Dolphins are 5-2-1 in their last eight games played in the Big Apple. Also, the road team, which in this instance happens to be the Fins, come in with a 6-1 record in seven games. But, not everything is peaches for the Floridians in the long haul, as the Dolphins have earned a 9-24-1 record in their last 34 clashes against Gang Green.

But make no mistake about it, considering the way their first meeting of the season went, there are plenty of stats to suggest the Jets just might win by at least five points. Pro-Jets aficionados would be glad to know that Gang Green comes in with a 4-1-1 record in their last six games played against the AFC East and a 5-2-1 mark in their last eight games after allowing more than 350 total yards.

As far as how Miami has performed, there’s a surprising air of optimism for the Dolphins. One of the reasons is because the Fins are 5-0 in their last five games played in Week 12, and that they’re 5-2 in their last seven contest after accumulating less than 250 total yards in the previous game.

Much like in the case of the Jets, there are also some problem areas for this club heading into this one. The fact that they are just 3-7 in their last 10 games after a loss is definitely a red flag. Not to mention Miami’s 2-5 record after the defense surrenders more than 150 rushing yards the week prior.

Want more reasons to stay away from Miami in this one? How about their 4-11 record in their last 15 games overall, 2-9 mark against the AFC conference, and of course, the Dolphins 1-5 performances in their last six games after scoring less than 15 points the week prior.

Dolphins vs. Jets NFL Week 12 Prediction: It’s no secret that neither one of these teams has exactly set the world on fire as of late. However, the fact that the difference in their first meeting was the outstanding play of Chris Ivory, and considering the fact that he has slowed down significantly, leads one to believe that the Dolphins are more than capable of going into MetLife Stadium and either stunning the Jets, or worst-case scenario lose by less than a field goal and a safety.

In order to take advantage of the Bengals’ cold streak, however, the Rams will need to put together at least a little bit of offensive success. That could be considering that the Rams have scored just 13 points in each of their past two games, with rookie running back Todd Gurley, who’s scored in each of the past five games, delivering the only touchdowns during that span. The defense will also need to limit a Bengals team that scored 31 points in their loss to the Arizona Cardinals last week and is averaging 26.6 points per game this season, good for fifth-best in the league. With top pass rusher Robert Quinn likely out on Sunday, it could be very difficult to limit the Andy Dalton to A.J. Green connection, even though the two have experienced a bit of a drop-off in production over the past few games.

Two jihadists killed, two arrests in north Paris shootout

Two suspected jihadists were killed, including a woman who blew herself up, in a shootout Wednesday in north Paris with police hunting the mastermind of last week’s attacks on the French capital, sources said.

As troops patrolled the streets, heavily-armed police swapped gunfire with people holed up in an apartment in the suburb of Saint-Denis, police sources said.

Two people in the apartment were killed, including a woman who blew herself up, and a third was still inside, and at least three police were injured, they said.

Two arrests were made.

The operation aimed at the suspected mastermind of Friday’s deadly attacks in Paris, Belgian Abdelhamid Abaaoud, who has been active with the Islamic State group in Syria, the source said.

The raid began before dawn, at around 04:30 am (0330 GMT), on an apartment at the crossroads of Rue de la Republique and Rue Corbillon.

The area is home to the Stade de France, one of several places hit by gunmen and suicide bombers on Friday in the worst ever attack on French soil, which was claimed by the Islamic State jihadist group.

The coordinated assaults killed 129 people and injured more than 350, some of them critically.

A local resident who identified herself as Alexia told AFP she heard shots, “‘booms like grenades and then intermittent bursts” of gunfire”.

“I heard bursts of machine gun fire,” said Reda, a taxi driver. “I got out (of the car), masked policemen stopped us and told us to leave.”

The raid came as Europe was placed on high alert after footage from the scene of one of Friday’s attacks revealed a ninth suspect may have taken part.

It was not clear if this ninth man was one of two suspected accomplices detained in Belgium or was on the run, potentially with 26-year-old fugitive Frenchman Salah Abdeslam who took part in the attacks with his suicide-bomber brother Brahim.

Police also carried out raids in southwestern France, in Ariege, Toulouse and the department of the Haute-Garonne.

The operations were part of an anti-terrorism strategy and not the probe into the Paris, an investigator told AFP.

French President Francois Hollande on Wednesday will hold a meeting to discuss proposals to extend by three months the state of emergency declared after the worst attacks in French history. It will then be put to vote by lawmakers Thursday and Friday.

In a sign of the nervousness gripping Europe after Friday’s carnage, a football match between Germany and the Netherlands was cancelled Tuesday and the crowd evacuated after police acted on a “serious” bomb threat.

As police stepped up the hunt for the fugitives, French and Russian jets pounded IS targets in the group’s Syrian stronghold of Raqa for a third consecutive day.

France and Russia have vowed merciless retaliation for the Paris attacks and last month’s bombing of a Russian airliner, also claimed by the Islamic State group, which have galvanised international resolve to destroy the jihadists and end Syria’s more than four-year civil war.

“It’s necessary to establish direct contact with the French and work with them as allies,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said as France prepared to send its aircraft carrier, the Charles de Gaulle, to the eastern Mediterranean on Thursday.

Hollande will meet Putin in Moscow on November 26, two days after seeing US President Barack Obama in Washington.

France has invoked a previously unused European Union article to ask member states for help in its mission to fight back against the Islamic State organisation, which received unanimous backing from Brussels.

But France also appears to be forging an unexpected alliance with Russia, which it has clashed with over the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria, after both countries were targeted by the jihadists in deadly attacks.

On Tuesday, Russia finally confirmed that the Russian passenger jet that crashed in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula last month, killing 224 people, had been brought down by a bomb, though it did not name any responsible group.

The alliance comes as international players meet to discuss ways of ending the Syrian war, which has spurred the rise of the Islamic State group, forced millions into exile and triggered Europe’s worst migrant crisis since World War II.

On a solidarity visit to Paris, US Secretary of State John Kerry said a “big transition” in Syria was probably only weeks away after Iran, Russia and Saudi Arabia reached agreement at the weekend on a path towards elections.

Highlighting US fears over the attack, two Air France flights bound for Paris from the United States were diverted Tuesday and landed safely after anonymous threats the carrier called a “bomb scare.”

Fate of Paris attacks mastermind Abdelhamid Abaaoud unclear

A Belgian jihadist named as the ringleader of the Paris massacres was not among those arrested during a police operation in the north of the city, officials said.

Eight people were arrested after police swat teams carried out a seven-hour siege at a flat in Saint-Denis, but they did not include Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the suspected mastermind, and Salah Abdeslam, one of the suspected gunmen who is now the focus of an international manhunt.

Two people died during the police operation, one of whom was a woman who blew herself up.

But Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said officials have not yet been able to identify the bodies due to their condition.

Mr Molins said the operation had neutralised a "new terrorist threat", and that "everything led us to believe that, considering their armaments, the structured organisation and their determination, they were ready to act".

Police fired around 5,000 rounds of ammunition during an hour-long exchange of gunfire as the terrorist cell barricaded themselves in a hideout in the north of the city, less than a mile from the Stade de France football stadium where one of last week's attacks took place.

Heavily armed police squads initially were thwarted by an armoured door and had to use assault guns, sniper rifles, grenades and explosives during an "extremely difficult" and "complex" operation in the early hours of this morning.

Two bodies were found in the rubble of the building after an explosion, thought to have been caused when a woman detonated a suicide vest.

Mr Molins said: "At least one terrorist killed herself with an explosive. The floor of the flat collapsed and the state of the bodies and what is left of them will demand some more investigation."

He added: "I'm not in a position to give a precise and definitive number for the people who died, nor their identities, but there are at least two dead people

Two men were found inside the flat, one of whom was injured and arrested. The eight arrested included one woman and a man whose flat was used as a hideout by the terror cell and are being interrogated.

Mr Molins said: "The identities of the people who were arrested in this building are not absolutely certain but Abaaoud and Salah Abdeslam are not part of the people who have been arrested."

Earlier, the prosecutor said the raid was launched after information from tapped telephone conversations, surveillance and witness accounts suggested Abaaoud might be in a safe house in the Saint-Denis suburb.

Several police officers were injured and a police dog was killed during the operation.

Saudi Arabia, which lent its Sunni-Wahhabi creed to the Isis killers of Paris, will care nothing for François Hollande’s huffing and puffing about war.

The Saudis have heard it all before, this New World Order stuff, way back in 1991 when George W Bush dreamed up the sub-Hitlerian expression for the Middle East he thought he could produce: an oasis of peace, a place of weaponless wealth in which swords would be turned into ploughshares – or at least into bigger oil tankers and longer pipelines.

The Saudis are far too busy blowing up bits of Yemen in their crazed war against the Shia Houthis to worry about the Sunni-Wahhabi crazies of Isis. Their enemy remains America’s new best friend – Shia Iran – and they are as keen as ever to dethrone the Alawite-Shia President of Syria, even if Isis is in the front line against Bashar al-Assad.

They know that French foreign policy has favoured Saudi trade as fervently as it once opposed the Iranian nuclear agreement – and that billions of dollars’ worth of US military supplies will still flow to the kingdom despite their countrymen’s links to the cult which destroyed 129 lives in Paris.

If anyone thinks that Barack Obama is going to discipline Saudi Arabia’s monarchical theocracy, they have only to glance at the proposed $1.29bn sale of US weapons to the 79-year-old King Salman to realise that the US doesn’t care to curb the kingdom’s ferocity.

It has largely stopped bombing Isis – surprise, surprise –but desperately needs more weapons after burning up its arms inventories on the poverty-stricken Yemenis. The proposed weapons deal – already approved by the US State Department – includes Boeing direct attack munitions and Paveway laser-guided bombs from Raytheon.

The Houthis, needless to say, still control a lot of Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, even though the Iranian military assistance to them – much trumpeted by the Saudis – is mythical. Human rights groups have long accused the Saudis’ air strikes of indiscriminately killing civilians – the UN put the total civilian dead at 2,355, each one, of course, as precious as the 129 lives destroyed in Paris on Friday.

The United States – and the France – would presumably like the Saudis to kill 2,355 members of Isis, but that is not to be. The US Congress has already permitted Obama to sell another 600 Patriot PAC-3 air defence rockets – putting £5.4bn in Lockheed Martin’s pocket – although the Houthis have not a single aircraft in their possession. The missiles are presumably intended to protect Saudi Arabi from the Iranian air attack that no one in the Gulf really believes will ever take place.

As for France’s new emergency laws, they will bother neither the Saudis nor any other Arab nation. In a Middle East in which the local dictators, kings and emirs – almost all of them the West’s allies – regularly spy on their citizens, tape their telephones and torture their own people, no one is going to care if the new Hollande laws restrict the egalité or liberté of the people of France.

For the Saudis, the family battle between the Crown Prince and Interior Minister Mohammed bin Nayef, and the 30-year old Defence Minister and deputy crown prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Saud – who has led the disastrous Saudi bombing of Yemen – is of far more interest than the future of Isis.

And of far more interest to France will be its own lucrative arms deals with Saudi Arabia, where Hollande still hopes – forlornly, one might add – to supplant the US as the kingdom’s main arms supplier. He may think he’s “at war” with Isis – but the spiritual mentors of the so-called Caliphate will be left untouched.

Hartman: Zimmer says Vikings aren't regarding Packers lightly

Mike Zimmer will face the Packers for the third time as Vikings coach on Sunday, and this is the first time his team will be favored to beat its border rival.

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer isn’t buying much into the Packers’ three-game losing streak, pointing out that Green Bay lost back-to-back road games against then-undefeated teams before losing to a divisional rival in Detroit last weekend.

Mike Zimmer will face the Packers for the third time as Vikings coach on Sunday, and this is the first time his team will be favored to beat its border rival.

Zimmer was asked if playing the Packers creates any different preparation or expectations from his players.

“Does it make any difference that we’re playing them? I think they understand the importance of this game, being a division game, them being the NFC North champs, I think yeah, they understand there’s a little more to it this week,” Zimmer said.

While many think the Packers are struggling right now, Zimmer said you have to consider their competition — losing back-to-back games to two undefeated teams, and then losing to a division rival at home in the Lions last week.

“Against Carolina, Carolina played really well, they scored a lot of points and then [Green Bay] came back at the end,” he said about the 31-27 loss. “I think they just had a tough stretch. They’re a good football team. [Aaron] Rodgers is a great quarterback, a Hall of Fame guy, [Randall] Cobb is a great receiver, [Eddie] Lacey and [James] Starks are excellent backs. I think their offensive line is very good, people don’t give them enough credit.”

While the Packers are generally known for their offensive output, they have actually been just as good defensively this year. They rank 11th in scoring on both offense and defense, scoring 24.3 points while giving up 20.6 points per game. Zimmer said the Green Bay defense will be a challenge.

“Defensively they put a lot of pressure on you, especially third downs,” he said. “A lot of their interceptions come on third downs because of the blitz package that they have. We’re going to have to do a great job and really stick to get our team to understand that this is who we are and this is how we play and it’s a good thing because we keep winning out of it. So we just have to keep playing the way we play.”

Big play clinches big win

Protecting a one-point lead Saturday, the Gophers had rushed for a measly 21 yards in the fourth quarter, and they might have been headed for defeat had the Illinois offense gotten the ball back.

But Shannon Brooks, the 19-year-old who might be headed for an All-America selection one day, busted loose for a 75-yard touchdown run to clinch a 32-23 victory on a day when their defense was largely inadequate. The second half might have been the worst the Gophers defense played all season as it was dominated by the Illini.

With 85 seconds to play, Brooks made amends for a fumble that had led to an Illinois touchdown with a run that set the stage for a big game with Wisconsin next week and the right to clinch a bowl bid for the fourth year in a row.

Tracy Claeys, who earned his first victory since being named the head coach in place of the retired Jerry Kill, was asked about the Gophers’ second-half struggles.

“Everybody makes adjustments, and it always comes down to third downs, and we didn’t play well in the second half on offense on third downs,” he said.

“It was a tale of two halves offensively, and we thought we could get a few more points. But again the other side, I’m proud of the defense, we were able to hold on and get the win for the way we’ve had things go against us here recently.”

As for the big touchdown run by Brooks, Claeys said: “It was just a give off the zone dive is all it was. Up front it’s just getting a body on a body, and [the Illini] overran it. I thought today, he did a good job of finding the cutbacks and whether to bounce or keep it on path. He can run, as he showed, when he gets in the secondary. … If we can do that more, he’s a good enough back to hit the hole, and he can get it over with.”

Freshmen were ready

Brooks put together his second-best rushing total of the season Saturday, a nearly identical line to his breakout performance against Purdue in October when he rushed for 176 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Against Illinois, he rushed for 174 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries.

Still, Brooks acknowledged that it was a number of freshmen making big plays in the game that helped the Gophers end their four-game losing streak.

“We all work hard in practice and we came up in the summer studying the playbook and getting as many reps as we can,” he said. “It shows, and paid off today.”

Asked if he believed this freshman class could become this good so fast, he said: “You know, you always have to come in with a good mindset, don’t be negative and stay positive and work hard and learn as much as you can. When your opportunity comes you have to take advantage of it.”

With Brooks bringing in his second touchdown of at least 70 yards on the season, he was asked how it feels to break away for a score like that.

It’s the greatest feeling, especially for a running back, they dream of long touchdowns, he said. It’s good to see the line open up that big of a line, anyone could run through really, it’s a great feeling.

Eddie Lacy looks to get back on track for Packers

Before last week's game against the Detroit Lions, Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy announced James Starks would replace Eddie Lacy as the Packers' starting running back. Then Green Bay decided to hold Lacy out of Sunday's game all together because of a groin injury he'd suffered in the previous contest against the Carolina Panthers on Nov. 8.

The Packers lost to the Lions 18-16, their first defeat by Detroit at Lambeau Field since 1991. After winning its first six games, Green Bay has lost three in a row.

Trying to get back to the top of the NFC North, the Packers visit the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday afternoon. McCarthy said Starks will remain the starting running back, but Lacy will be back as the 2 in a "1-2 punch" on Sunday.

"I thought Eddie looked good yesterday," McCarthy said on Friday. "I thought he had one of his better practices. It looks like he's bouncing back."

Lacy said he wouldn't have been at 100 percent for last week's game.

"I was able to make like cuts at the line, but when it came to opening up and bursting downfield, I didn't feel as comfortable with it," Lacy said Wednesday. "But today I was able to do that, and like I said, was just moving in a positive direction. ... I felt good today. My (position) coach (Sam Gash) said I was moving good, I was looking good. So it's a step in the right direction."

The former Alabama standout ran for 1,178 yards in 2013, when he won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Last season, he rushed for 1,139 yards, caught 42 passes and scored 13 touchdowns.

On Oct. 4, Lacy ran for 90 yards on 18 carries in Green Bay's 17-3 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. It appeared he'd gotten over the ankle injury suffered against the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 20. In his four games since San Francisco, Lacy has 78 yards on 33 carries, leaving his previous outing early because of a groin injury.

"As an athlete, you want to be good all the time," Lacy said. "You want to be able to make big plays all the time. When things happen that's hindering you from doing that, it (stinks), and you get down a little bit. But, I mean, it's the NFL. It happens. It's all about getting out of the slump and how you get out of the slump."

Lacy said he's not concerned about his stats, but about getting Green Bay's season turned around.

"I'm going to be out to do whatever I can for this team," Lacy said. "However that unfolds, as long as whatever I'm doing is positive and helping us toward a 'W,' that's my main concern."

Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers said getting the running game going again would help straighten out the Packers.

"Defenses are kind of dictating us throwing the ball a little bit more, so we need to be efficient to kind of throw it to set up the run," Rodgers said. "If we can do that, we need James and Eddie to make the right cuts and give us yards after contact."

Against Detroit last week, Starks gained 42 yards on 15 carries and quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw 61 passes.

"We haven't been where we'd like," McCarthy said. "Every year brings different challenges. It's something we have to overcome. Throwing the football 61 times, that's excessive."

The Packers and Vikings kick off at 3:25 p.m. CST Sunday at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Green Bay's slide has allowed Minnesota to take over the top spot in the NFC North. The Vikings have a 7-2 mark.
