Why do golf balls have dimples?

A dimpled balls travel up to four times farther than smooth-surfaced golf ball.

The early golf ball, known as a featherie, was simply a leather pouch filled with goose feathers. In order to obtain a hard ball, the pouch was filled wet with wet goose feathers. The typical drive with this type of ball was about 150 to 175 yards. In 1845 a new ball was used made of gum. The gum was heated and molded into a perfect sphere. This was a failure and did not work as well as the featherie, until someone noticed that the old gum balls flew farther. The balls had become scored and marked, by trial and error they ended up with the dimple golf ball. The science of aerodynamics helps explain the dimpled phenomenon. When a ball travels rapidly through air, the air is pushed apart by the ball. The air joins back together behind the ball, but the joining is full of eddies and turbulence. The turbulent wake reduces the pressure behind the ball, pulling it back and slowing it down. The dimples on a golf ball trap a thin layer of turbulent air all around the ball, even wrapping it around the trailing half. Because the turbulent layer is very thin, the air joins together more smoothly behind the ball, creating a smaller wake. The ball feels less backward drag, and it flies farther.

Spacewar is generally considered to be the first video game. Programmed in 1962 by MIT student Steve Russell, Spacewar was a simple game with ASCII graphics where two players would blast lasers at each other. At the time, the game only ran on massive, million-dollar mainframes the size of a small house. Spacewar was circulated to other computer labs across the country, but only nerdy college students with access to mainframes could play it.

1962 was also the year in which University of Utah student Nolan Bushnell received his first exposure to video games, playing Spacewar in the University's computer lab. Bushnell spent the next seven years trying to reproduce Spacewar on a smaller, less expensive computer. When it was finally completed in 1971, Bushnell's Spacewar variation (dubbed "Computer Space"), bombed. For one thing, people found it too complicated. Bushnell gave up on it, quit his job at Ampex and founded Atari in 1972. Bushnell originally wanted to name the company Syzygy, but the name was already taken by a roofing company. That same year, Magnavox quietly released the Odyssey, the first home video game system. It had a game similar to Pong, and Magnavox later sued Atari for "copying" it (they won).

Bushnell and Atari engineer Al Alcorn placed a prototype of their game in Andy Capp's Tavern, a Sunnyvale, California bar. Alcorn began work a home version of Pong. His project was code named "Darlene" after a female coworker that worked with Alcorn at the time. In the fall of 1974, Alcorn began developing the "Darlene" system. Several months later Atari released Home Pong.

· Diet Coke was only invented in 1982.

· Naugahyde, plastic "leather" was created in Naugatuck, Connecticut.

· As of 1940, total of ninety patents had been taken out on shaving mugs.

· It took three years of constant printing to complete Johann Gutenberg's famous Bible, which appeared in 1455 in two volumes, and had 1,284 pages. He reportedly printed 200 Bibles, of which 47 still exist.

· Madame Alexander dolls were the creation of Beatrice Alexander Behrman, the daughter of Russian immigrants. Mrs. Behrman, whose father operated New York's first doll "hospital," started making dolls in 1923, and her creations soon became famous for their molded heads and limbs, lifelike eyes, rooted hair and elaborate costumes. Mrs. Behrman sold the company to several New York investors in 1988, two years before she died at age 95. The actual origin of the @ symbol remains an enigma.

Like many letter forms and symbols, the origins of the ubiquitous @ symbol are lost to antiquity, but we do have some good ideas. It seems it was used by monks making copies of books even before the invention of the printing press. Since every single word had to be painstakingly transcribed by hand for each and every copy of a book, the monks performing these copying duties looked for any way possible to reduce the number of individual strokes per word, particularly for common words. Ergo, the word "at" became a single stroke of the pen as "@" instead of three strokes. It may not seem like much, but it makes a enormous difference if you spend your life copying manuscripts.
Another origin tale states that the @ symbol was used as an abbreviation for the word amphora, which was the unit of measurement used to determine the amount held by the large terra cotta jars that were used to ship grain, spices and wine. It seems likely that some industrious trader saw the @ symbol in a book transcribed by monks using the symbol and appropriated it for use as the amphora abbreviation. This would also explain why it became common to use the symbol in relation to quantities of something.

Seventeen years ago, when the Uefa Champions League was not as popular as it is today among Nigerian audiences, two young Nigerians went all the way to the finals with their Dutch club and won the competition.

Years later, the tournament has grown in leaps and bounds in the consciousness of audiences across Africa’s most populated country.

5. VINCENT ENYEAMA

Goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama wrote his story into Uefa Champions League folklore when he scored the opening goal via a penalty kick in Hapoel Tel Aviv’s 3-2 away victory over Red Bull Salzburg in August 2010. The Nigeria number one, who has never been afraid to take spot kick responsibility, shot the visitors ahead in the third minute of the encounter. Enyeama later scored in the Group Stage against French top team Lyon in a 3-1 defeat. His scoring prowess made Goal.com place an odd on him to score in their next game against Schalke.

4. YAKUBU AIYEGBENI

Nigeria striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni needed only to play one season in the Champions League to leave a lasting record for compatriots coming after him. In the 2002-03 season, Yakubu scored seven goals for Israeli side Maccabi Haifa to help them move into the knock out stage of the Uefa Cup. It is the highest number of goals ever scored by a Nigerian in the tournament. It began with a brace in the qualifying stage against Austrian side Sturm Graz. He increased it a notch to a hat trick in the group stage victory against Greek team Olympiacos, scored a penalty in a 3-0 defeat of Manchester United and got another goal in the return leg 3-3 draw with Olympiacos.

Even though Maccabi failed to progress to the knock out stage of the Champions League, they moved into the next phase of the Uefa Cup where they unfortunately lost 8-1 to AEK Athens without Yakubu who had made a loan move to Portsmouth in January of 2003. He has not played in the competition since but his goals attest to his prowess.

3. JOHN OBI MIKEL

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel is only the third Nigerian to have featured in the final of the Uefa Champions League, albeit in a non-playing substitute role. Mikel was on the losing side in the 2008 final as Chelsea fell via penalties to Manchester United in a very tense all-English final played in Moscow. Still wet behind the ears, Mikel was an understudy to France international Claude Makelele in the holding midfield role.

However, Mikel has since grown into a key first team player and has consistently helped the Stamford Bridge outfit to compete in the knockout stages of the competition year after year. Chelsea are presently in the semi finals of the tournament and could go as far as the finals once more with luck on their side if they finish their job against Barcelona on Tuesday. The Nigerian could be presented another opportunity to make history.

2. FINIDI GEORGE

Once described as the best right winger in the world, Finidi George moved to Europe from Sharks of Port Harcourt in 1993. At Ajax, he became one of the best passers of the ball in Europe where he earned plaudits for his impressive performances every week. This helped Ajax to win three straight Dutch league titles and also to propel them in the Champions League. His number Seven jersey became synonymous with grace and elegance as he ran past defenders delivering passes that seemed to simplify the work of strikers.

George won the Champions League with Ajax in 1995 when they edged past AC Milan 1-0. Alongside compatriot Nwankwo Kanu, he became the first Nigerian to win European club football’s most coveted title. An attempt to win it a second time was scuttled by Juventus a year later when Ajax lost via penalties in the final. He left the Dutch giants afterwards to join Real Betis after turning down Real Madrid.

1. NWANKWO KANU

Lanky Nwankwo Kanu shot to fame with his exploits in Nigeria’s victorious Under-17 national team in 1993. Soon after, he moved to Europe where he had been spotted by Dutch giants Ajax who were building a team of exciting young players. After months of being in the youth set up, Kanu slowly began to assert himself and the next year was promoted to the first squad where he played in the Champions League. He scored against Croatian side Hajduk Split in the quarter finals.

The young player came on as a substitute in the final where Ajax defeated AC Milan 1-0 in Vienna to carve his name and that amazing Dutch team into Champions League legend. A year later, now assured of a starting place in the Ajax squad, Kanu once again played in the final of the competition but was unlucky to lose to Juventus via penalties.

Kanu moved to Arsenal in 1999 but did not reach the heights of 1995 as the Gunners could only manage a quarter-final finish in the last year of his contract there.

The Italian dismissed his side closing their deficit at the top of the table to three points and congratulated Sir Alex Ferguson for winning the league ahead of the derby next week

Roberto Mancini has congratulated Manchester United for winning the Premier League title despite his Manchester City side closing the gap to three points with a 2-0 win over Wolves.

If City win their final three games, they will likely be champions but Mancini was quick to rule his side out of the running.

“Only one team [United] can win this title,” he told reporters.

“It’s not in our hands, we have three points less.

“After the derby we play two difficult games, against Newcastle who are fighting for Champions League and against QPR who are fighting relegation. I think we have three difficult games.

“If United win 10-0 against Swansea and 2-0 against Sunderland, and we only win 1-0, 1-0, 1-0 we arrive in the same position.”

Despite his side's victory, Mancini admitted he would like to have seen more, and believes Wolves could have snatched a point had it not been for a great save by Joe Hart from Stephen Fletcher with the score at 1-0.

“It [the save] was important because he saved a difficult moment,” he added. “For this reason I was upset with my strikers because we didn’t close this game before.

“We had chance to close this game and if you don’t close this game you can concede a goal. That moment can change the game.”

However, the Italian did show his delight that City had ground out the victory but admitted he was sorry that the result condemned Wolves to Championship football next season.

“It was a good day because we won a difficult game,” he continued.

“Wolves are relegated but I don’t think they deserve to be there because for me they are a good team and I am very sorry for them.

“They fought on every ball and they played very well and probably we didn’t do a good performance today but for us it was important to win.”

With the Manchester derby just eight days away Mancini called on his players to focus on that game and do everything they could to win the game to put a smile on the faces of the City supporters.

“We have the derby, we want to play for our supporters and we want to win,” he said.

“We got them a gift in the FA Cup in January, now it’s finished but Monday will be a different game.

“They [United] are used to pressure, for us it will be different because for us it’s the first time and we’ve don’t have any pressure because we don’t have a chance to win.”

The Brazilian has full belief that the Blues can go through to the final in Munich, but must be at their absolute best to see off the Catalan giants at the Nou Camp

Chelsea midfielder Ramires insists his side are still underdogs in their Champions League semi-final tie with Barcelona, despite going into the second leg with a goal advantage.

Didier Drogba’s first-half strike has given the Blues a slender lead ahead of the return fixture at the Nou Camp, despite being heavily under the cosh throughout the tie at Stamford Bridge.

And Ramires is sure that despite the reigning European Champions being favourites to progress, his side have a good chance of upsetting Pep Guardiola’s men.

"The pressure will be on Barcelona. They have to score and we can exploit that,” the former Benfica man told the Sun on Sunday.

"They don't intimidate me. Barca are not invincible.

“We have showed it at Stamford Bridge. We have taken the first step - but our advantage is minimal. They are favourites.”

Barcelona suffered a rare home defeat, and almost certainly conceded the Spanish La Liga title to bitter rivals Real Madrid, when they lost 2-1 to Jose Mourinho’s side on Saturday.

And Ramires is buoyant about Chelsea’s chances, particularly as they have Drogba fit again, after missing Saturday’s London derby at Arsenal.

The History of Shaving
The evolution of shaving began during prehistoric times and continues to develop to this day. From plucking hairs out with shells to using electric shavers, shaving has undergone many changes.

It is believed that prehistoric man would pluck out hairs using two shells. Quite inefficient, these would eventually be replaced by flint razors, which proved to be much sharper. Unfortunately for ancient men, flint razors were not very durable.

Consequently, the use of metal razors eventually developed. Approximately five thousand years ago, copper razors became moderately widespread in regions of Egypt and India. The ancient Egyptians proved to be rather extreme in the use of their shavers. It was considered unsophisticated in that society to possess any visible hair at all. To have such hair would indicate that a person was a barbarian or a criminal. This trend went to such an extreme that the entire head was shaved, resulting in the use of wigs. It is believed that such practices were begun due to hygiene, as a lack of hair deterred lice infestation and cooled down a person.

Later, in the time of Alexander the Great, shaving became more widespread, reaching Greece and eventually Rome. It was said that Alexander was so conscious of his appearance that he would not enter battle without a preliminary shave. Subsequently, for many, a short haircut and a smooth face were considered necessary as well as aesthetically pleasing.

Shaving once again regained popularity in the middle ages with the advent of elaborate headdresses for women. Many shaved off their hair as well as their eyebrows in order to accommodate such accessories. Men, meanwhile, were expected to possess neatly trimmed facial hair or none at all.

The shaver itself evolved noticeably since the middle ages. In the early 1800s, a straight razor was extremely popular. Somewhat resembling a pocketknife, the blade folded into the handle. This proved to require much maintenance and skill to use, prompting its fall to the shaver we know today. In the later half of the 1800s, the blade became perpendicular to the handle, making the product easier to use. Eventually, disposable blades became available and have proven popular ever since.

Over the past few hundred years, shaving has evolved into its modern form. The mass marketing of shaving products has exploded over the past century, partly through the growth of the media. Women, for instance, began shaving their armpits in 1915, following an advertisement in the United States displaying a woman's shaved arms. Shocking at first, this soon caught on, prompting women to shave their armpits, a trend continuing to this day in much of the western world.

Undoubtedly as trends change, shaving will undergo more modifications. As it stands, however, shaving is an ingrained practice in all societies and is likely to become more sophisticated over time.

Men's Shaving
When it comes to men, the face is typically the region of the body to be shaved. There are two general purposes for men's shaving. The first is to completely shave off all facial hair on a regular basis. The second is to groom some or all facial hair in order to maintain a beard, mustache, or a goatee.

For those who shave off all facial hair, there are many available tools for shaving. These include t-razors, electric shavers, and straight razors. Each suitably completes the job, although they each have different advantages. T-razors and electric shavers are most commonly used today. Straight razors, on the other hand, require much skill to use and become dull fairly quickly. As a result, they are no longer commonly used.

T-razors and electric shavers are the tools of choice for men in today's world. The electric shaver has gained immense popularity due to its ease of use as well as due to the speed at which it is able to complete the job. The downside to this shaver is that it is harsh to the skin, as it requires the skin to be dry in order to function. T-razors, despite being a slower method, provide a closer shave. They are also more soothing to the skin, especially when a used in combination with a decent gel or oil.
For those with some facial hair, a combination of the above with a beard or mustache trimmer will suitably complete a shave.

Women's Hair Removal
For women, there are four major types of body hair removal. These include shaving - the most common method, waxing, the use of depilatory creams, and electrolysis.

The most widespread means of eliminating body hair is shaving. This can be used to remove hair from the legs, underarms, and - with care - the bikini area. A razor combined with a conditioning shave cream or lotion is best used to promote smooth skin. When shaving the legs, it is best to shave against the grain, permitting that the same area is not shaved over more than once. Repeatedly shaving the same spot may cause ingrown hairs.

Another popular form of hair removal is waxing. Two types are used, one of which is peeled off with special paper while the other is peeled off after hardening. Waxing is best used for the more sensitive areas of skin, such as the face and bikini area. Waxing is performed both by professionals as well as at home with the use of kits.

Depilatory creams are another, potent method for hair removal. Consisting of strong chemicals, this method is best used on more rugged skin, such as on the legs or underarms. At most, depilatory creams should be used once or twice per week, depending upon the instructions provided by the manufacturer.

The final method for female hair removal is through electrolysis. Permanent, expensive, and painful, this procedure is the least common. Despite its permanence, the procedure is costly and slow. A needle is inserted into individual hair follicles, and then an electric current is sent into the hair, effectively killing it. This is precisely used in order to remove certain areas of hair growth.

Shaving Techniques

Prewash the skin using warm water in order to open pores and to soften the skin's surface. This is best performed following a bath or shower, which naturally warms and moistens the skin's surface.
Do not use excessive amounts of shaving foam or gel. Additionally, it is best to use those which benefit the skin. Foams and gels containing vitamins for the skin, which help repair shaving damaged are available.
Shave using a razor, not an electric shaver, for best results. Electric shavers typically operate on dry skin for best performance. They are not as accurate as a sharp razor and may more easily abrade the skin's surface.
Be sure to use a sharp razor. Regardless of the brand, if it is not sufficiently shape, it won't produce as effective a result. In fact, the odds for damaging the skin increase significantly with an older, blunt blade.
Shave in the direction of hair growth to reduce the blade's friction with the skin. Otherwise the blade is likely to cause damage to the skin in the form of a cut or a rash-like abrasion. An exception to this is for women shaving their legs.
Be sure to rinse the blade several times per shave in hot water. This will keep the blade clean and improves its performance.
Rinse the skin with warm (not hot) water when complete. This washes away the foam or gel used and helps to restore the skin's moisture level.
Do not use aftershave when finished. Aftershave contains alcohol, which closes the skin's pores and dries out the skin. Since the act of shaving removes skin oils, it is not a good out to dry out the skin any further. Instead, use shaving oils to replenish the skin's moisture.

Since the first day I met any of you I know I have not made any meaningful impact in your life, my sincere apologies for I should have done better, I wish this writing can be of help to you no matter how remotely. Therefore I would like for you to know who exactly I am, I know its too much to ask, I know I am that inconsequential, I am of no importance but notwithstanding I’m going to give a brief introduction of my humble self and the purpose for which this blog is written .
I am not smart and I am also not fine , I have a big head which is accentuated by an unkempt afro which has found a permanent resting place on my head, my english is poor and my funds are always dwindling (which means I can’t ‘do’ fine babes) , to wrap up the whole scenario I am a social and community cast away, I don’t have a life !
For obvious reasons my name has been withheld, I have spent the last 5 years of my educational life (*sigh* like I have another life! ! ) in the Department of Estate Management , Faculty of Environmental Sciences , University of Lagos which is a longer way of saying I’m in my final year. My matric number starts with 07 and ends with 3, you could check it out , I am no ghost.
My class is notorious for their lack of cohesion (we all caused this), people claiming to be fresh and forming for each other (apart from exam time, dem no wan fail so dem gats clinch) , this has resulted in the lack of any social aspect whatsoever, all we do is read read and read … And then fail … And then lament . Semester in semester out this has been our lot, the cycle just keeps occurring, the rat race never stops, we keep doing the same things over and over again and expect change, isn’t that one of the definitions of madness ?
Well, we are a MAD(Making A Difference) set !
Save for one or two efforts made by the boys we would have graduated in this manner, the girls don’t even care .All they know how to do is wear fine clothes and form fine girls -which they are not, quote me- and clinch to boys to teach them stuff for exams (cos the boys are only useful for their brains, NO SWAG)…. And make noise … And .. And .. And , and I should stop this (bad) attitude , I love ALL of them nonetheless (truly,madly,deeply), let’s move on with this blog please, their case is irredeemable

This guy is simply a genius, an intellectual conversation with him and you’d be blown away, very vast and detailed but the thing is his scholarly traits are not what we are going to discuss here, I’d rather dwell on the character and physical appearance of his prestigious self.
If any of you ever played mario kart on SNES or N64 (pardon my illustration, I was and always would be a game freak, so help me GOD) you would be familiar with one of the animals called koopa troopa, our scholar is similar in appearance with this character. Unlike the shapely head of yours truly this guys head and the typical Lagos road have no difference, gallops everywhere in such a way that two big mounds like hellboy’s shaved horns exist on his head. He is probably 5’10″ and walks with a slight bend . Mode of dressing ? Errrrr like a scholar
Now the problem is that most peeps (guys, yours truly excluded) feel that he takes more liking to the female specie, in other words he is a sly guy , he would rather be (teach,help) with a female than a male and that doesn’t go down well with the fellas. 3. The Scholar ….. Wannabe
Sometime ago I had the opinion that this person had traces of mental imbalance in his system which was most likely induced by the intake of too much books. I knew he was not perfectly ok . My doubts were confirmed when ‘HRH Noreos’ made an audacious statement about him and I quote verbatim
‘the guy is not a such a bright chap, he just has a thirst for knowledge ….. E go dey do like peson wey get touch for head’ .
After I heard this statement I paid particular attention to him, let me relay my findings;
He is usually excited about particular topics in class you’d think he had just been told of some huge amount of money mysteriously waiting for him under his bed, he always attempts to answer questions asked in class even though he gets 85% of them wrong , he always has some inner energy whenever books are concerned that one would believe he was on nothing less than a 4.5 CGPA, pity that is not the case .
My worries were heightened when I met this guy one evening somewhere in class, the rope of a teabag was hanging out of the breast pocket of the ragged shirt he was wearing, I could also make out the shape of cubes of sugar in the same pocket,about 3 of them.
In the back pocket of the jeans (equally tattered) I could see the tip of a sachet of milk – cowbell to be precise, I couldn’t miss the shiny blue wrapper – hanging out . In his hands were a pile of books I’m sure professor iyagba could not read in one session and of course a mug, he couldn’t even greet me so we just said a hasty hi and I left. Going out I tried to picture the situation again, where did he keep the spoon ? Water ? How would he get it boiled ?
My conclusion: my friend is going bonkers
The next morning he was late for class , dressed in the same ragged undersized shirt of the previous night, shorts that were probably given to him by a disgruntled uncle held up by a kind of rope which I cannot describe now and white trainers that had seen better days. He was in his traditional glasses and his hair was not combed, the lecturer (Dr Babade) let him in most likely out of pity . I was beginning to wonder if this dude was really getting mad until I heard a little more about him
He is the last child of his aged parents and all his other siblings are married so he has the duty of taking care of both of them, asides his BSc he is taking other professional courses (DUDE, you want to run mad ?) and therefore doesn’t have time for himself. Next time you see him, pray for him.

The original crop circles were exactly that - basic circular patterns of flattened crops - often created in mysterious circumstances overnight. During the last 20 years, crop circles have evolved into complex geometric shapes, like the DNA double helix or the nautilus shell. Whatever creates them has become rapidly more advanced in just a period of a few decades.
The first crop circle was recorded in 1966, when an Australian sugar cane farmer claimed to see a saucer-shaped spaceship rise up from a swamp before flying away. When he looked at the landing site, he said he found the reeds intricately woven in a clockwise direction on top of the water. Over the years there have been many other anecdotal accounts of crop circles appearing in alien UFO literature, where sometimes the crops were burnt, otherwise flattened.
As unexplained mysteries go, this one has been debunked by numerous experts, who have provided ample evidence that crop circles are a giant man-made hoax...
In 1991, two men from Southampton, England, admitted they had been creating hoax crop circles for 15 years. They could make intricate patterns using planks, rope, hats and wire - and could create a 40-foot circle in 15 minutes. The only reason they came clean was because one of the men was running up considerable mileage on his car and had to convince his wife he wasn't having an affair. He still publicly demonstrates the art today.
Further studies have dismissed claims that alien saucers have been leaving excessive nitrate deposits at crop circle locations. The trace deposits are explained by the nitrate-based fertilizers used by farmers to grow their crops.
Other paranormal fans claim that there is a mysterious energy left behind within crop circles and people go there to mentally make contact with an extra-terrestrial energy. What could possibly create such a widespread psychological effect?
Science refers to this as The Placebo Effect - where the mind can produce powerful effects on the body simply because the person expects it to. Indeed, the mind is so powerful (and science fully accepts this) that it can sometimes heal the body just as well as medicine when that medicine is replaced by a sugar pill.

#2 The Pyramids of Egypt

As unexplained mysteries go, the pyramids of Giza in Egypt really are something special. We still don't really know how the Egyptians built the largest pyramid of all, known as the Great Pyramid of Cheops (or Khufu), some 5,000 years ago. Remember, this was even before the invention of the wheel!
The Pyramid of Cheops is the size of a 40-storey building and covers an area big enough to fit 10 football fields in it. More than 2 million stone blocks were used to make the pyramid, each weighing 2-5 tons and cut from a distant limestone quarry on the other side of the Nile. Experts reckon it took 400,000 men some 20 years to complete.
Engineering feats aside, there are still some reported unexplained mysteries going on at the Pyramid of Cheops. In the 1940s, a French hardware dealer spotted some mummified animals exactly one-third up the height of the pyramid. The remarkable thing was they showed no signs of decomposition. He deducted that the pyramid shape was responsible for preserving these creatures.
Later, a Czech radio engineer conducted a series of experiments in which he placed a brand new razor blade inside a 1:1,000 scale model of Cheops. He aligned his pyramid on a north-south axis exactly like the real thing. After getting 50 shaves from the razor, he was forced to conclude that it was only getting sharper from being inside the pyramid. It took him 10 years to obtain a patent for this device, which he claims still has no scientific explanation today.
But is it a genuine unexplained mystery - or an embellishment of the truth? This is another way that stories become legends which, because they are so famous, people believe there simply must be something to it. If "Pyramid Power" were a real, observable effect, it would surely have been commercialized by now. (It hasn't.)

#3 Bigfoot (aka Sasquatch)

He's big, he's hairy, and he's starred in his own TV show.
Bigfoot is world-famous for spooking the bejesus out of hikers and hunters in North America. Scientists consider Sasquatch to be the result of folklore, misidentification and a whole lot of hoaxes. However, many people still believe these humanoid creatures exist around the world, just like the Yeti of the Himalayas.
One of the most infamous unexplained mysteries in the world today, Bigfoot has been described as an ape-like creature, some 6-10 feet tall, weighing more than 500 pounds, and covered in dark brown or reddish hair. Witnesses give him large eyes, a heavy brow ridge and a crested head, much like a male gorilla. Footprints allegedly belonging to Bigfoot are 24 inches long.
Is Sasquatch really one of the great truly unexplained mysteries of the world? Somewhat disappointingly, the most famous footage of Bigfoot at Bluff Creek, California, was shot down by a man called Bob Heironimus. Years after the event, he claimed he wore an ape costume for the filming.
It's also virtually impossible that a prehistoric, bipedal, apelike creature could exist, simply because the breeding population of such an animal would have to be so large that many more sightings would be reported. What's more, with so many bigfoots running around, we would have found some physical evidence by now, such as fecal matter, hair, footprints, and even numerous corpses and skeletons.
Nevertheless, Bigfoot's cousin - the Yeti (aka the Abominable Snowman) - has a strong alleged presence in the Himalayan regions of Nepal and Tibet. Teams of scientists continue to seek out photo evidence which is also thin on the ground - yet many locals accept the reality of a breeding Yeti population as read.

#4 UFOs and Area 51

The first reported UFO sighting happened in Texas in 1878, when a local farmer reported seeing a large, dark, circular flying object flying "at wonderful speed". Another famous early sighting occurred in the UK in 1916, when a pilot reported seeing a row of lights that rose and disappeared into the sky.
After UFOs were popularized by science fiction in the 1950s, the number of sightings went through the roof. (About a decade before the first UFO-crop circle sighting was reported.) Theories to explain the paranormal phenomena range from the good old Extraterrestrial Hypothesis (aliens visiting us from another planet) to the Interdimensional Hypothesis (aliens popping over from a parallel universe).
Although I do believe there is other life out there in the universe (and tons of it - the universe is so mind-bogglingly huge) I don't believe aliens are visiting us in flying saucers, nor making crop circles just to freak us out. The truth is that UFO sightings can be explained as airplanes, helicopters, weather balloons, comets, meteors and even the five planets which can be seen with the naked eye. In photos and videos they are usually deemed as dust on the camera lens or simply all-out hoaxes (which is ridiculously easy to do now with PhotoShop). Meanwhile, night-time alien visitations can be explained by the hallucinogenic effect of the sleep disorder Sleep Paralysis.
Meanwhile, UFO conspiracy theories center around Area 51 in Nevada, about 90 miles north of Las Vegas. The site houses a large air base that was selected in the 1950s for testing of a U-2 spy plane. It has since become America's testing ground for secret "black budget" aircraft before they go public.

#5 The Belmez Faces

In 1971, in the small Spanish village of Belmez, Maria Pereira claimed a human face spontaneously appeared on her cement kitchen floor. It wasn't long before she destroyed the floor and replaced it - and a new face promptly appeared.
More and more faces continued to appear on the floor of Maria Pereira's kitchen, attracting thousands of visitors every day. Some were male, some female, some large, and some small. In time, she discovered that the house, built around 1830, apparently stood above a graveyard used by the Romans, Spanish Muslims and then Medieval Christians.
But did Maria Pereira just paint the faces herself?
If so, she never benefited financially from all the attention. She lived a simple life in that same house and eventually died in 2004.
Paranormal fans who just love these unexplained mysteries suggest that the faces were manifested on the floor by telekinesis. This notion was based on the claim that the expressions on their faces used to change with the mood of Maria Pereira.
Of course, scientists have found it possible to analyze the molecular changes in the whitewash and prove that some fakery was involved. Many now believe that the paintings were actually created by Maria's son, Diego Pereira.

#6 The Out of Body Experience

An Out of Body Experience is defined by your awareness being transferred beyond your physical body. I've experienced it myself while practicing Lucid Dreaming Techniques and the process has even been replicated under laboratory conditions.
So, is this proof of the spirit? The afterlife? Alternate dimensions?
Alas, not quite. To trigger an OBE yourself, focus inwards and cut yourself off from your perception of the outside world (what you can see, hear, taste, smell and touch).
Very quickly, your mind begins to create new stimulus of its own. We call these dreams. (This is the crux of the WILD technique for having lucid dreams.)
Usually dreams are reserved for sleep, but as lucid dreamers and OBErs know, it is possible to trick the body into sleep while remaining conscious of these hallucinations. So - are lucid dreams and OBEs the same thing?
To many dream explorers, the answer is a resounding yes. To others, they are completely different phenomena. But the real question is: are OBEs real in the sense that your mind - your awareness - literally leaves your body?
Out of body explorers have long tried to prove this by trying to obtain data from different locations while in the out of body state. Unfortunately nothing truly definitive has been recorded under verifiable conditions. And there are plenty of stories involving OBErs who "saw" their friend sitting at the computer in their OBE, and, lo, when they called them up in real life that's exactly what they were doing.
But science does not accept coincidence or best guesses as proof. That really would get us nowhere in the grand scheme of things.
Perhaps Out of Body Experiences remain one of the true unexplained mysteries of this world. But I feel that with further sleep research we will soon uncover the true mechanism of OBEs and how they differ (if at all) from lucid dreams.

#7 The Mayan 2012 Prophecy

According to many New Age believers, the 2012 prophecy states that the world as we know it will end on December 21, 2012. This is not a new phenomena; as landmark dates draw near, end-of-the-world theories creep out of the woodwork with astonishing popularity. People love this armageddon stuff.
And yet, we're still here.
I don't consider 2012 to be one of the true unexplained mysteries... far from it. Yet many people are really into this one. So let's look at the idea more closely.
The theory is based on the idea that when the ancient Mayans plotted our position in the Milky Way, they created a special astrological calendar. And on the Winter Solstice (in the Northern hemisphere) in 2012, the Earth would pass into a new astrological phase and something dramatic would happen - ie the world ends.
Unfortunately for Mayan fans, there is no real-life evidence to support the idea that the alignment of planets in relation to distant star constellations viewed from our Earthly perspective has anything to do with day-to-day changes in your personal life. It's about as scientifically reliable as reading your horoscope. (In my days as a freelance writer, I once turned down a job to write horoscopes for a magazine. When I asked how I was supposed to obtain the predictions - they simply told me to make it up.)
Real Mayan scholars report that there is no evidence to show that the Mayans ever made any kind of doomsday prophecy. Merely, that calendars keep track of the passage of time - they do not predict the future. So, the Mayan calendar - like all calendars - simply had to end somewhere. Not only does it end, but it begins again in a new cycle, just as your calendar ends on December 31 and begins again on January 1.
While your life may come to an abrupt end any time, any day, without warning, there is very little you can do about it. One thing is for sure: our society, like all civilizations before us, is geared to postulate over end-of-the-world mysteries with gusto.

#8 Stonehenge

Stonehenge is one of the greatest unexplained mysteries of the world. It's certainly no hoax (estimated to be more than 5,000 years old) and is probably the most important prehistoric monument in the whole of Britain.
When you visit Stonehenge, you'll find yourself driving for miles through rolling hills and countryside until, suddenly, you catch sight of this bizarre structure. There's an eerie feel to the area around Stonehenge, and for thousands of years it has soon silently, giving away few clues as to the meaning of its existence.
Excavations have revealed that Stonehenge was built in four stages:

First a series of holes were dug around 3,100 BC for religious ceremony.
Then, more than 1,000 years later, the most dramatic stage of building took place. Huge bluestones from mountains in Wales were lugged more than 240 miles to the Stonehenge site. Why would anyone do this in the age before the wheel? And how would they accomplish such a feat? These are true unexplained mysteries - because it really wouldn't have been hard to find rocks closer nearby. The stones were then set up to form an incomplete double circle, aligned perfectly with the midsummer sunrise.
The third stage in 2,000 BC saw the arrival of the more stones, transported by land from the Marlborough Downs some 25 miles away.
Finally, after a further 500 years had passed, someone felt the need to rearrange the massive Welsh bluestones into the familiar horseshoe and circle we see today.

One of the great unexplained mysteries of ancient man, the meaning of Stonehenge is still not clear today. Was it a temple, a burial ground, an observatory, or an ancient calendar? Without a time machine to go back and ask, we may never know...

#9 Loch Ness Monster

The Loch Ness Monster is a prehistoric creature thought to inhabit the Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. As lake monsters go, Scotland has tales of a fair few, with Nessie gaining the most popularity of all on the back of anecdotal evidence.
Nessie first hit the headlines in 1933 when a story was published in the Inverness Courier. The report quoted a Londoner who had visited a few weeks earlier as seeing: "a most extraordinary form of animal... the nearest approach to a dragon or pre-historic animal that I have ever seen in my life."
After that, more sightings were reported and this unexplained phenomena hit international headlines. That same year, one motorcyclist claimed to nearly hit Nessie late one night as it lumbered across the road and slid back into the loch. Soon, apparent photos of the Loch Ness Monster were published.
In 1960, an aeronautical engineer filmed a hump crossing the water in Loch Ness in a powerful wake unlike that of a boat.
Years later, digital enhancement of the footage revealed what seemed to be the rear body, flippers, and two more humps of a plesiosaur-like body. The technician said: "Before I saw the film, I thought the Loch Ness Monster was a load of rubbish. Having done the enhancement, I'm not so sure."
There's no doubt that the story of Nessie has drawn huge tourist interest to the famed Loch Ness. But should it be considered one of the genuine unexplained mysteries of the world? While some people believe the monster is a living plesiosaur, New Scientist points out that such a creature could not physically lift its head up out of the water like the photos and anecdotes suggest.
The most compelling evidence of its non-existence is that the loch is a mere 10,000 years old - and was frozen solid for about 20,000 years before that. For a prehistoric monster claimed to be millions of years old, the numbers just don't add up.

#10 Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle is held responsible for the disappearance of countless airplanes and boats in the ocean between Florida, San Juan, and Bermuda. This area is one of the most heavily sailed shipping lanes in the world, with vessels crossing through daily for ports in the Americas, Europe and the Caribbean Islands.
So why do people think there are unexplained mysteries going on in this vast triangle of ocean?
Over the years, there have been a huge number of disappearances that happened in mysterious circumstances, supposedly falling beyond the possibilities of human error, equipment failure or natural disasters. Many paranormal theories talk of a suspension of the laws of physics.
For instance, the first unexplained event occurred in the 1950s when the story of Flight 19 came to light, detailing a group of five US Navy bombers on a training mission. The flight leader was reported to have said: "We are entering white water, nothing seems right. We don't know where we are, the water is green, no white." It was also claimed that Navy officials said the planes "flew off to Mars".
So, do multiple airplane and boat disappearances over a patch of ocean count as unexplained mysteries? Skeptics say no. They point out that such incidents have been greatly embellished, that ships have sunk in many places, and the Bermuda Triangle is responsible for no more disappearances than any other area of ocean.

Real Madrid introduced Pep Guardiola to a new sensation on Saturday night: defeat against Barcelona’s greatest rivals at Camp Nou.

Ten times the Catalan faced Los Blancos at the atmospheric venue as a player and 10 times his side came through unscathed. He had then enjoyed six matches as a coach without a loss prior to the 2-1 reverse.

And the taste of defeat will have been particularly potent as the capital side effectively clinched the league title, moving seven points clear with only four games left to play.

The torrential rain teeming down from the Barcelona sky throughout the encounter summed up the mood of the home camp, which looked flat, even during the pre-match press conferences.

It was a night on which none of Guardiola’s gambles paid dividends; itself an unusual feeling for a man who has grown accustomed to seeing risks pay off. Records are still there to be broken, with the prospect of becoming the first team in the Champions League era to defend their title a particularly priceless carat, especially given it would come at the expense of Madrid, whose efforts to win a historic 10th European crown have been foiled for nearly a decade.

If this is achieved, Barca could justly argue to have enjoyed a stronger campaign than Los Blancos, confirming their status as an immortal side and providing Guardiola with that familiar feeling of record-breaking success once more.

The Toffees went ahead through Nikica Jelavic but Wayne Rooney equalised before the break. In the second half, six goals spilt equally ensured that United left the ground disappointed, having led 4-2 with seven minutes to play.

There was only one change from United's team who beat Aston Villa 4-0 last week, with Ashley Young replaced in the starting lineup by Nani following a week of controversy over the award of a penalty kick in the opening stages of that match.

For Everton, David Moyes made three changes to the side who lost out to Liverpool at Wembley, with Tony Hibbert and Phil Jagielka coming into the defence in place of Leighton Baines and Tim Cahill, with Sylvain Distin moving to left-back. Magaye Gueye was also replaced by Steven Pienaar.

The visitors created the early opportunities of the game, the first with a header from Leon Osman that David de Gea saw comfortably wide.

The Spanish keeper was then forced into more urgent action in the fifth minute as Nikica Jelavic got a sight of goal, springing the offside trap but seeing the shot saved low to his left.

Nani had the first shots for the hosts, cutting in off the left flank to curl two efforts, one of which flew wide and Tim Howard comfortably saving the second.

Paul Scholes had an effort in the 16th minute from distance, but Howard saw it wide before the visitors had a dangerous counterattack, but Rio Ferdinand did well to clear the danger.

Everton were doing a good job of containing United's attacks in the opening half-hour and looking to spring some quick breaks of their own, with Marouane Fellaini holding the ball up well.

Former United man Darron Gibson had a shot from distance soon after the half-hour mark, but again the goalkeeper went untested as it screwed wide.

And in the 33rd minute the visitors took the lead. Hibbert put in a deep cross from the right wing, and Jelavic headed the ball perfectly over De Gea and into the far corner.

The keeper no chance, and Jelavic became the first player to score a league goal against the Spaniard since Jermain Defoe netted for Tottenham in United's 3-1 win on March 4.

United were almost back in it straight away as Scholes hit another effort from the edge of the area, this one taking at least two deflections before Howard did well to block it.

And in the 41st minute, the hosts were level. Nani whipped in a devilish ball from the left wing that just passed over the head of former United player Phil Neville, and Rooney nodded the ball home from six yards out past the helpless Howard.

With that header, Rooney moved joint fourth in Manchester United's all-time goalscoring list, level with Dennis Violett and George Best on 179 goals for the club.

In the last action of the first half, Sylvain Distin was rather harshly booked for bringing down Antonio Valencia as the winger looked to get through on the right wing. The defender appeared to use only his shoulder in a battle of strength.

There was a break in play shortly after half-time as Osman and Patrice Evra clashed heads nastily in an aerial battle, but both players were fine to continue.

And Everton quickly found themselves not only behind but two goals down thanks to some wonderful attacking play from the hosts.

United took the lead in the 57th minute through slightly controversial circumstances. Pienaar had gone down with an injury to his midriff, but referee Mike Jones let play go on, contrary to a situation in the first half when Everton were on the attack and the play was brought back due to an injury for Jonny Evans.

But as play significantly progressed, the ball fell to Nani, who found Welbeck on the edge of the area. The striker dummied a shot to make space for himself and curled a wonderful effort into the top corner.

And four minutes later United extended their lead with a great team move. After some good passing involving Valencia and Carrick, the central midfielder found Welbeck in the box and the striker flicked the ball into the path of the on-rushing Nani, who took a touch before dinking the ball over Howard to extend their lead.

Everton were straight back in it though, as Fellaini volleyed home from another Hibbert cross in the 67th minute, with some very suspect marking on show from United's central pairing of Evans and Ferdinand.

But two minutes later United extended their lead again with some great link-up play between their strikers.

Valencia aimed a pass in towards Welbeck, and the striker stepped over the ball, bewildering Jonny Heitinga and beating him for pace as he let the ball roll to Rooney.

The Liverpudlian played a pass in behind for his strike partner to latch onto, and the ball was then squared for Rooney to notch his 26th Premier League goal of the season, taking him one goal behind Robin van Persie in the race for the golden boot.

Rooney is now only behind Denis Law, Bobby Charlton and Jack Rowley in United's all-time goal scoring record after scoring his 180th strike for United.

But the game wasn't quite over. Evra almost made sure of the victory when his diving header hit the post, but Everton incredibly drew level with two goals in as many minutes.

A ball hoisted into the area by Neville wasn't dealt with by Ferdinand and Evans, and it fell to Jelavic who volleyed past De Gea, with the keeper again standing no chance.

And straight away Everton were on the attack, with Neville again finding Fellaini in the box, this time into feet. The Belgian managed to turn and find the unbelievably unmarked Pienaar at the front post to poke the ball past De Gea.

Despite all of United's late efforts to find a winner, including a volley from Rio Ferdinand that was brilliantly saved by Howard, United dropped two points and handed Manchester City a timely boost in the title race.
